Engineering not for you, Punjab and Haryana HC tells student who could not clear 17 compartments in 9 years

The court said the petitioner can try other fields like law, but should not try engineering any more

Punjab and Haryana High Court on Tuesday rejected a mercy petition filed by a BTech student of National Institute of Technology (NIT), Kurukshetra to allow him one more attempt to clear his compartments.

The petitioner was awarded 17 compartments during four years of the degree course and was given a time period of another four years to reappear and clear the exams that he failed in. But the petitioner could not clear the exam in the given time period.

The petitioner requested the court to grant him another attempt to clear all the 17 compartments. The court dismissed his petition saying that it had no sympathy for people like him who waste nation’s resources.

“When you could not pass an engineering degree in nine years how can you clear 17 compartments in one attempt. It is better to choose some other career, but not engineering,” the court commented.

Replying to the petitioner seeking mercy, the court sought mercy instead, saying  ‘you have mercy on this court and do not waste its valuable time and have mercy on this country and do not become an engineer’. The chief justice suggested that the petitioner can take up some other profession like he can try to become a lawyer, but he should forget about engineering.

While AAP has claimed credit for Punjab’s rise in the education sector, the timeline suggests the state’s improvement may have begun before the party came to power in 2022. The AAP government was sworn in in March 2022. But some key surveys or studies have cited the data prior to 2022. It raises the question: Does the AAP government deserve the actual credit, or are they riding on someone else's work?
