India to host G-20 summit in 2022 on the occasion of 75th year of India’s independence

The first G-20 summit was held in Washington DC, the United States in 2008 under the leadership of George Bush.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi yesterday announced that India will be hosting the G-20 summit in the year 2022 on the occasion of 75th anniversary of India’s independence.

The announcement by the Prime Minister came at the concluding session on the third day of the G-20 summit in Argentina. India was supposed to host the prestigious summit in 2021, while Italy had the opportunity to host the international forum in 2022. Reportedly, Italy has accepted India’s request to allow it to host it in the year 2022, which marks the 75th anniversary of India’s Independence.

“In 2022 India completes 75 years since Independence. In that special year, India looks forward to welcoming the world to the G-20 Summit! Come to India, the world’s fastest-growing large economy! Know India’s rich history and diversity, and experience the warm Indian hospitality,” the Prime Minister tweeted after making the announcement.

The G-20 is a grouping of the world’s 20 major economies. It comprises of Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, the European Union, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Turkey, the UK and the U.S. The G-20 countries together contributes for almost 90% of the world’s GDP, 80% of world trade, 65% of the world population, and nearly half of the world land area.

The first G-20 summit was held in Washington DC, the United States in 2008 under the leadership of George Bush. Japan is set to host the 2019 G-20 summit in Osaka. India will be hosting its first G-20 in the national capital New Delhi in 2022.
