As Balasore tries to bounce back after the triple train accident, here are other accidents of the same Coromandel Express in the past

On Friday, 2nd June 2023, a triple train accident took place at Balasore in Odisha. Yeshvantpur (Bengaluru)-Howrah Superfast Express, a goods train, and the Coromandel Express were the three trains that collided in this complex accident. As many as 17 coaches of these two passenger trains were derailed and severely damaged in the accident on Friday evening leaving 288 passengers dead and injuring over 1,000 people.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, who reviewed the restoration work at the Balasore triple train collision site on Sunday, said the root cause of the accident has been identified and the track will likely be restored soon.

“Restoration work is ongoing at Warfooting at the train accident site in Balasore, Odisha with 1000+ Manpower working tirelessly. At present, more than 7 Poclain Machines, 2 Accident Relief Trains, and 3-4 Railway and Road Cranes have been deployed for early restoration. Officials are closely monitoring the restoration process at the accident site,” read the post on the official Twitter handle of the Railways ministry.

The Coromandel Express has encountered many accidents even in the past. This recent accident in Balasore, therefore, reminds people of the old mishaps with the same train that runs between Chennai and Howrah.

Derailment of Coromandel Express in 2002

The Coromandel Express, running between Howrah and Chennai, underwent a derailment on March 15, 2002, around 2:40 pm. The incident took place at the Padugupadu road over-bridge in Kovuru Mandal, situated in the Nellore district of Tamil Nadu. The investigation identified the deteriorated state of the primary railway track between Chennai and Vijayawada as the underlying cause of the accident.

Derailment and accident of Coromandel Express in 2009

On February 13, 2009, the Howrah-Chennai Coromandel Express encountered another unfortunate incident when it derailed approximately 100 km away from Bhubaneshwar in Orissa. 13-14 coaches of the train were derailed. The specific location was Jajpur Keonjhar Road. Tragically, the derailment resulted in the loss of 16 lives, while 161 others sustained injuries. Some of the injured individuals were in critical condition and later passed away due to their injuries. Following the incident, the Railways initiated a high-level investigation to determine the cause of the derailment; however, the exact reason remains unknown.

In another unfortunate accident involving the Coromandel Express, on 30th December 2012, in Odisha’s Ganjam district, six elephants, including two calves, lost their lives. Additionally, a Coromandel staff member also tragically died in the accident, although the exact cause of their death remains unclear.

Derailment of Coromandel Express near Nellore in 2011

The Coromandel Express experienced a derailment near Nellore in Andhra Pradesh on December 6, 2011. Tragically, the incident led to the loss of 32 passengers’ lives and caused injuries to numerous individuals.

Fire mishap in the train in 2012

On January 14, 2012, a fire incident occurred in the general compartment of the Chennai-Howrah Coromandel Express near Lingaraj Railway station. The fire originated in the second coach from the engine. Thankfully, the fire was swiftly brought under control within 20 minutes, and no injuries were reported. Initial findings indicated that the fire was likely caused by the negligence of certain passengers. Consequently, an additional investigation was initiated to delve into the incident.

Fire on the train again in 2015

A separate incident took place on April 18, 2015, when a fire broke out on the Coromandel Express at Nidadavolu Junction, resulting in damage to at least two coaches. The fire incident caused significant harm to the affected coaches of the train.

The triple train accident of 2023

The latest mishap with the Coromandel Express is one of the most horrific accidents in the history of Indian railways. On June 2, 2023, a recent collision occurred near Bahanaga Bazar railway station in Odisha’s Balasore district, resulting in the derailment of approximately 17 coaches of the Coromandel Express. This collision involved three trains, the Coromandel Express, a goods train, and the Bengaluru-Howrah superfast express. This accident claimed 288 lives.

Maharashtra: FIR registered three for allegedly spreading ‘false and malicious’ content in the Savitribai Phule controversy

A new development has taken place in the Savitribai Phule controversy. Indic Tales, Hindu Post, and the Twitter account TrueIndology were all named in an FIR filed by the Mumbai Police on Wednesday night. The case has been filed for allegedly “spreading false and malicious” content against social reformer Kratijyoti Savitribai Phule. It has been alleged that the content published by them was intended to inflame feelings and foster animosity between different groups.

A group of NCP leaders protested outside the Mumbai Police Commissioner’s office earlier on Wednesday in response to ‘derogatory’ content on the websites Indic Tales and Hindu Post. They were led by Maharashtra Leader of the Opposition Ajit Pawar, former Minister Chhagan Bhujbal, and NCP State Chief Jayant Patil.

The leaders met with the chief of the Mumbai city police department and handed him a letter signed by the three NCP stalwarts demanding that these websites be shut down. They also claimed that the articles, which denigrated Savitribai Phule’s contributions, had been published with the intention of stirring up trouble.

Chhagan Bhujbal stated, “Indic Tales and Hindu Post have projected Savotribai Phule in a wrong manner. They have made highly objectionable remarks that cannot be tolerated in a progressive state like Maharashtra. Savitribai Phule was a great social worker. She had done pioneering work in the field of women and education. She started the first school for women in Pune.”

After they arrived at his office, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde immediately gave Chief Secretary Manoj Saunik instructions to look into the situation and file a report, adding that any insults to public figures like Savitribai Phule would not be condoned.

“The website ‘Indic Tales’ has written many objectionable things about Krantijyoti Savitribai Phule in its published article, and many political organizations and social organizations have raised objections to the government. Taking cognizance of these objections, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has directed to check the content of this website and take action against it,” the CM informed in a statement issued by the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO).

It further cautioned, “While writing about revered personalities of our society, it should be well researched and the authors, and publishers should ensure that it won’t lead to disrespect any of the respected personalities.” It is pertinent to note that the FIR has been filed against popular Twitter handle TrueIndology as well.

Gujarat: Illegal dargah built inside government-run Sajuba Girls High School demolished by local administration

On Saturday, June 3, an illegal dargah built inside the Sajuba Girls High School premises in the Jamnagar district of Gujarat was demolished by the local administrative authorities. The demolition drive was carried out amidst a heavy police presence at midnight. SDM Bhavesh Kher, SP Premsukh Delun, and Deputy SP Vaghela were also present at the demolition site in addition to 400 cops.

The now-demolished dargah named Syed Jinnat Bibi Ma Nagani was illegally constructed inside the premises of Sajuba Girls High School on Ranjt Road. There were regular complaints of schoolgirls being disturbed by the burning of incense and frankincense at the illegal dargah. The principal of the school also complained about this to the administration of Jamnagar while the Hindu organisation ‘Hindu Sena’ also voiced the demand for the removal of this illegal religious structure. Following the demolition, Hindu Sena chief Prateek Bhatt welcomed the action taken by the authorities.

The local authority of Jamnagar carried out the operation to demolish the construction amid long-standing objections on the intervening night of Friday (2 June) and Saturday (3 June). District Police Chief Premsukh Delu, SDM, Naib Mamlatdar, and other officers arrived, and Jamnagar LCB, SOG Branch, CT A Division, B Division, and C Division police station officers and other personnel were also deployed at the site.

On Saturday morning, District Superintendent of Police Premsukh Delu told the media that after receiving a memorandum about the encroachment in Jamnagar’s prominent government Sajuba Girls High School, the case was verified with the collector, and action was taken to remove the encroachment. A total of 400 police officers were deployed. Even now, many other such encroachments are on the administration’s radar.

Before this, on May 27, Junagadh’s local authorities carried out a demolition drive of illegal encroachments amidst protests by up to 2000 Muslims. Many illegal Mazars were also demolished in the action carried out against such illegal structures.

Somalia: 54 Ugandan soldiers killed by Islamist terrorist organisation Al-Shabaab

In a major terror attack, 54 Ugandan peacekeepers were reportedly killed in a recent assault on a military post in Somalia by the terrorist organisation Al-Shabaab. On May 26, the group attacked the base owned by the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) at Buulo Mareer, which is located 130 km southwest of Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia.

“Our soldiers demonstrated remarkable resilience and reorganised themselves, resulting in the recapture of the base. We discovered the lifeless bodies of 54 fallen soldiers, including a Commander. These terrorists attempted another ill-fated attack on Baraawe Town, but our forces dealt a significant blow, forcing them to flee,” Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni posted and also informed about the arrest of the commanders who issued the orders for the soldiers to retreat and stated that they will be court martialed.

Last week, the Ugandan leader proclaimed that there had been Ugandan casualties, but he did not mention the attack on the troops, who are members of ATMIS. However, he had warned Al-Shabaab of dire consequences.

The Islamist group had alleged that on Friday, it carried out suicide bomb strikes in which 137 soldiers perished.

Since 2006, Al Qaeda-linked Al-Shabaab has fought to uproot the incumbent government which it claims is backed by the West and aims to replace it with a new one that implements a strict interpretation of Islamic law in the country.

Following President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s election victory in August of last year, the government launched a sustained offensive against them that has made great progress in undercutting the outfit’s hold over major portions of Somalia.

Although, the latter is still able to carry out significant strikes on military, commercial, and governmental targets. It also occasionally conducts operations in neighbouring Kenya in retaliation for Nairobi deploying soldiers to support the rebel resistance in Mogadishu.

Al-Shabaab attacked a second military camp in Masagawa on May 30 and killed 17 individuals, only days after attacking the ATMIS military base. A military official in Masagawa named Captain Abdullahi Mohamed acknowledged the attack and disclosed that 12 Al-Shabaab terrorists were killed, but he was unsure how many troops were dead.

Meanwhile, on June 1, the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) carried out a retaliatory attack that resulted in the deaths of three Al-Shabaab militants. The incident happened at Wayanta, located around 60 kilometres southwest of Kismayo, a port city in southern Somalia.

‘Won’t do politics abroad, watch me when I get back’: Here is what EAM Jaishankar said taking a dig at Rahul Gandhi over his remarks in the US

On Saturday, June 3, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar took a jibe at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over his controversial statements against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his policies during his recent ‘Mohabbat Ki Dukan’ farce in the US.

During his interaction with the Indian diaspora in South Africa’s Cape Town, EAM Jaishankar said, “Look, I can only talk for myself I try when I go abroad not to do politics. I’m perfectly prepared to argue and argue very vigorously at home. Okay, so you will never find me wanting in that regard.”

Minister Jaishankar further stressed that there are certain collective responsibilities and national interests that are paramount when a political leader steps outside the country.

“But I think you know, even a democratic culture has a certain collective responsibility. There is a national interest there is a collective image. There are sometimes things bigger than politics and when you step outside the country, I think that’s important to remember,” Jaishankar asserted.

“So I might differ strongly with someone. I could say to you, I differ with them. But how I counter it, I would like to go back home and do it. And watch me when I get back,” EAM Jaishankar added.

This comes after Rahul Gandhi, at an event on Wednesday during his 10-day US tour called Prime Minister Narendra Modi a “specimen” saying that “there are many such people in India who are absolutely convinced that they know everything, in fact, I think, maybe they think know more than the God and they could sit down and talk with God and explain to him what is going on, and our prime minister is one such specimen.”

Moreover, Rahul Gandhi on 31 May claimed that minorities like Muslims and Sikhs are under attack in India. Answering a question from the ‘Bay Area Muslim community’ over alleged ‘threats to Muslims’ in India after his speech in Santa Clara in California, Rahul Gandhi said that Muslims and other minorities are feeling attacked in India. He said that it is “felt most strongly by the Muslim community because it is done most directly to them. But in fact, it is being done to all minorities.”

He then added, ‘The way Muslims are feeling attacked, I can guarantee Sikhs, Christians, Dalits and Tribals are feeling the same. What is happening to Muslims in India today happened to Dalits in the 1980s’.

Furthermore, the Congress leader during his interaction with the entrepreneurs in Washington claimed that his phone is being tapped.

Rahul Gandhi said that he was aware that his phone was being tapped but was unbothered about it. On his iPhone, he jokingly said, “Hello! Modi Ji.”

“I presume my iPhone is being tapped. You need to establish rules with regard to the privacy of data information as a nation and also as an individual. If a nation-state decides that they want to tap your phone, no one can stop you. This is my sense,” he stated.

Gandhi further said that the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has seized control of all institutions in India and that the opposition is in a state of flux. He also mocked the Sengol and the new parliament building suggesting that it is a move by the Modi government to distract the people from ‘real issues’.

Senior Congress leader Md Ali Shabbir says Muslims are backing Congress in Telangana: The ‘Grand Old Party’ and its competition with AIMIM

The Congress party is in a race with AIMIM to win Muslim votes in Telangana. Md Ali Shabbir, a senior Congress leader said on Saturday that the Muslims of Telangana were firmly backing the party and AIMIM would fail to make a dent in that votebank.

According to The New Indian Express Shabbir said, “The AIMIM had been supporting Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao but has now changed its stance and begun criticising BRS. However, Muslims are not going to be fooled by this change of heart. MIM leaders should know that there are differing opinions between Muslims in north and south Telangana.”

He further pointed out that AIMIM did not secure key constituencies including Nizamabad, Secunderabad, and Jublie Hills despite being in politics for over 50 years. The statement coming from the Congress leader is part of the strategy the grand old part has formulated to woo back Muslim voters in Telangana.

Notably, there are 40 Telangana Assembly constituencies that have sizable Muslim population. In the 2018, assembly elections, Congress failed to win even a single seat from these constituencies. AIMIM secured seven seats while Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao-led BRS (previously TRS) won the rest of the seats. AIMIM and BRS are considered friendly parties in the state. Reports suggest the top reasons for Congress losing all seats in Muslim dominating areas, mostly to BRS, were the welfare schemes and the “secular nature” of the Rao-led government since 2014.

Following the polls win in Karnataka Assembly elections, Congress appears confident that it can repeat the win in Telangana. The grand old party had a strong hold on Muslim voters in the state. Notably, the voting patterns of Karnataka made it clear that Muslim voters’ consolidation helped Congress win Karnataka.

Not to forget, Congress managed to put Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in a difficult position in Karnataka because of Muslim-centric issues including the hijab ban, halal vs jhatka row, scrapping of 4 per cent Muslim reservations and controversy around Tipu Sultan.

In Telangana, Congress claimed AIMIM’s polarisation has helped BJP in gaining Hindu voters. By targetting Muslim voters, Congress is not only planning to put a dent in AIMIM’s position in Telangana’s politics but also aims to put a dent in the rising popularity of BJP in the state. In May, before the Karnataka polls commenced, a senior Congress leader said to Times of India that the speeches Owaisi made might not get AIMIM Muslim votes or cut votes for the “secular parties”, it definitely polarised Hindu votes towards BJP.

TOI reported that election strategist Sunil Kanugolu submitted reports about the Telangana elections scheduled for 2023 end where it was pointed out that without Muslim votes it will not be possible for Congress to come back to power. To achieve the target, Congress has to cut Muslim votes of AIMIM and BRS collectively. Muslim leaders linked to Congress planned to meet ulema, masjid committees and prominent Muslim personalities to woo the community.

Congress’s Muslim supporters demand more representation

To get to the Muslim voters, Congress needs its Muslim workers to connect to the voters on the ground. The workers see this as an opportunity to find a way for Muslim leaders in the government if Congress comes to power. Keeping it in mind, Muslim Congress workers have formed a joint action committee seeking more representation for the Muslim community in the upcoming Telangana elections.

The recently formed Muslim team named Sarvodaya Joint Action Group (S-JAG) has 30 members. As per the Siasat report, the group has demanded Congress High Command consider only minority candidates where the Muslim population is over 25 to 30 per cent. The brain behind the formation of S-JAG and member of AICC Congress Sandesh MA Basith said, “We want the minority community to be given an opportunity to add value to public life. We have immense faith in your leadership to do justice and pay heed to the voice of Hyderabadis as a community.”

Notably, in Karnataka elections, after Congress registered victory, Muslim leaders demanded high-profile departments for community leaders in the government. Karnataka State Waqf Board chief Shafi Sadi claimed 72 constituencies went into Congress’s hands only because of the Muslims. 15 Muslim candidates were fielded by Congress in the elections, out of which nine won. However, his nomination from Waqf board was later suspended by the Congress government in Karnataka.

Congress leader instigated Muslims against BJP leader T Raja

In August 2022, Telangana Congress leader Feroze Khan launched a fierce attack on suspended BJP leader T Raja following his alleged remarks on Prophet Mohammed. He issued a threat on camera asking his followers to take the law in hand and beat up T Raja Singh. He said, “T Raja Singh wants to do politics of polarisation. Put him in jail. Raja Singh should apologise for his statement. The Prophet is our hero. If he doesn’t apologise, then I would want to ask every Muslim in Hyderabad to beat him wherever you see him. We can take the law into our hands not once, but several times.”

T Raja Singh was suspended from BJP following controversy erupted over his alleged statement against Prophet Mohammed. He was booked under Sections 153A, 295 and 505 of the IPC.

Madhya Pradesh: One Arif Shah and his family boycotted by the local Muslim community after he applied tilak to a Hindu man in Damoh

In Madhya Pradesh’s Damoh district, a Muslim man Arif Shah, son of Abid Shah, has been boycotted by the Muslim community along with his family. The reason behind the boycott is that he applied tilak to a Hindu during the electoral atmosphere there.

He has reportedly lodged a complaint with the district Superintendent of Police (SP) Rakesh Kumar Singh after which police personnel advised the community leaders and warned that any further boycott would be subjected to legal action. According to the police, the issue has been resolved.

The case pertains to Tejgarh village, which is within the jurisdiction of Tejgarh police station. People from the Hindu community, according to Arif Shah, reside close to his residence. People were interacting with one another during election season when he applied a tika to the forehead of a Hindu guy with gulal (colour) in the midst of the reception.

After the incident, Muslims of the area along with leaders of the community ostracised him and his family. He mentioned that the latter’s family is immensely influential and the entire community abides by his commands.

The victim stated that after his mother passed away some time ago, he called his religious brethren over for food but no one showed up, causing him to suffer a great loss. He revealed that members of his community do not invite him or his family to any wedding functions which is why he complained to the police.

The SP further said that following the allegation, the Additional SP called everyone involved in the matter, advised them and settled the problem. It has been made clear to everyone that whoever is responsible will face strict punishment if such an instance happens again. Police will continue to monitor the situation and efforts will be implemented to ensure that similar occurrences do not transpire in the future.

Karnataka gives in to anti-Hindu demands of Amnesty? Karnataka minister says “If buffalos can be slaughtered why not cows”

On Saturday, June 3, K Venkatesh, the animal husbandry and veterinary sciences minister in the newly formed Congress government hinted at the ‘review’ of the anti-cow slaughter act passes by the previous BJP government and legalising cow slaughter.

“If a buffalo can be slaughtered, why not cows?,” the minister argued saying that his government will discuss the Act, which does not contain any mention of cow slaughter.

In an attempt to justify his argument further, the minister stated that farmers are faced with a struggle in the maintenance of aged cattle and disposal of the dead. He claimed to have had some issues disposing of one of the cows that died recently at his farmhouse.

“I sought advice from veterinary officials, who advised me to bury the carcass. I had to get an excavator to bury the carcass,” Minister Venkatesh said.

According to Minister K Venkatesh, the government intends to purchase at least one crane for each taluk that will be used to bury cattle corpses.

Amnesty India’s demand to allow cow slaughter in Karnataka

Notably, on May 23, Amnesty India, a dubious organisation that closed its office in India after several agencies began investigating it for alleged FCRA violations, issued a list of anti-Hindu “demands” for the newly-elected Congress Government in Karnataka.

Amnesty India had demanded a review of the Prevention of Slaughter and Preservation of Cattle Act, 2020. The organisation also demanded to allow cow slaughter in the state of Karnataka.

Amnesty India had claimed that a ban on slaughter and religious conversions can be “misused and weaponised against minorities”. The tweet read, “Review and repeal discriminatory provisions in the Karnataka Prevention of Slaughter and Preservation of Cattle Act, 2020 and the Karnataka Protection of Right to Freedom of Religion Bill, 2022, which can be misused and weaponized against minorities.”

Karnataka Prevention of Slaughter and Preservation of Cow Bill 2020

The Karnataka Prevention of Slaughter and Preservation of Cow Bill 2020, passed by the state’s previous BJP government, took effect in February 2021. According to the Act, slaughtering any cattle, except buffaloes over the age of 13, is a serious offence punishable by up to seven years in prison.

Former Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) Mumbai zonal director Sameer Wankhede who was booked by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in alleged bribery probe in drugs-on-cruise case involving Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan’s son Aryan Khan, has claimed that he and his family were receiving threats in the name of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim.

According to sources, Wankhede told Mumbai Police that he was receiving threats through fake Twitter account and the threats were being made in the name of Dawood. He also apprised the police that who would be responsible if he or his family were attacked, said sources. After receiving the threat, sources said Wankhede informed senior officers of Mumbai Police.

Further investigation is underway.

Sameer Wankhede has been booked by the CBI for allegedly demanding Rs 25 crore as a bribe for not framing Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan’s son Aryan Khan in the drugs-on-cruise case.

Earlier, the NCB sources said that Wankhede violated the conduct rules by producing conversations he had with actor Shah Rukh Khan over Aryan Khan’s arrest in the drugs-on-cruise case.

“Sameer Wankhade giving chats in the court is against the conduct rules of NCB. How an investigating officer can have such chats with the family of the accused?” sources in the NCB said.

The NCB sources further claimed that Wankhede did not provide the phone through which he was chatting with Shahrukh Khan and along with this he also tried to scare a senior official of NCB when he took over the case.

Wankhede had approached the Bombay High Court against the CBI action against him, from where he was granted protection from arrest till May 22.

The High Court extends relief to Sameer Wankhede till June 8.
