The twists and turns in the Nirbhaya case are far from over as three of the convicts have now approached the International Court of Justice seeking stay on execution. A Delhi court on March 3 had issued a fresh death warrant to all four convicts in the 2012 Nirbhaya gangrape and murder case. The order by the court stated that all four convicts should be hanged on March 20, at 05:30 am. Three of the four convicts, Akshay, Pawan and Vinay have sought stay on execution.
Moreover, just 5 days before the scheduled execution, the families of the convicts on appealed to President Ram Nath Kovind to grant the convicts a death by euthanasia (mercy killing). Reportedly, two letters had been written by family members of Mukesh while 3 letters were written by Akshay’s family. Four letters each were sent to the President, by Mukesh and Vinay’s family members.
On Sunday, the Tihar Jail authorities had asked hangman Pawan Jallad to report by 17th March, three days, prior to the date of execution. Dummy executions would also be conducted after his arrival. Regular counselling and health checkups are also being provided to the convicts.
Earlier, the families of the Nirbhaya rape case convicts had gathered outside the Patiala House Court in Delhi pleading for the rapists and murderers not to be hanged. One of the placards claims that the Nirbhaya case had gained traction because of a conspiracy hatched by ‘Deshdrohi’ Arvind Kejriwal, the Chief Minister of Delhi. Another placard told Ramnath Kovind, the President of India, that he would incur the sin of ‘Brahma Hatya’ if ‘Brahmin’ Vinay Sharma was hanged to death. That particular placard was raised by one Mukesh Jain, the chief of one ‘Dara Sena’.
The 23-year-old physiotherapy intern, who is known as “Nirbhaya” was gang-raped and savagely assaulted by six men (5 adult and one juvenile) on the night of December 16, 2012, in a moving bus in South Delhi. She succumbed to her injuries and died a fortnight later in a Singapore hospital. The execution of the convicts has been postponed several times due to shrewd exploitation of loopholes in the law.
Authorities at Cochin have registered a case against 75 unknown persons and 4 others who had gathered at the Cochin International airport on Sunday night to welcome Bigg Boss Malayalam Season 2’s most popular contestant Rajith Kumar.
The charges were invoked for violating the ban on mass gathering issues by the airport authority in the backdrop of coronavirus pandemic.
Ernakulam district collector S Suhas also took to his official Facebook page and informed about a “Case being registered against four known persons and 75 unknown people.”
In the Facebook post, he wrote in Malayalam that this act by a fans association of a TV show is shameful for every Malayali, at a time when the whole world is taking precautions against the coronavirus outbreak. “The law cannot close its eyes against such blatant breaking of the rules when religious, political and social groups are all avoiding every kind of gathering as part of the precautions to keep the people safe,” he wrote. He further stated that such star worship is generally not part of Malayali culture.

As a precautionary measure to prevent the spread of Coronavirus, Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) had banned gatherings at both terminals of the airport but hundreds of fans thronged the Cochin airport last night, around 9 pm to welcome Rajith, the reality show contestant.
Rajith Kumar, a lecturer, has been in the news for many of his misogynist and controversial statements. He was one of the contestants of season 2 of Bigg Boss Malayalam hosted by actor Mohanlal. He had to face an unexpected ouster from the show after he applied chilli paste onto the eyes of one of his fellow contestant, Reshma.
With the addition of two fresh cases reported March 15, Kerala’s active coronavirus cases have touched 21. Including the earlier three discharged cases, the state’s total would reach 24.
Due to the increasing number of Covid-19 cases, panic has set in. People have been evading tests, hiding travel histories and fleeing hospitals, which in turn is making the situation worse. In one such case, a couple (in their 50s) and their son(24) who hail from Ranni in Pathanamthitta district of Kerala with recent travel history to Italy evaded health screening at the airport and were reluctant to get admitted at the hospital initially. They have tested positive for coronavirus.
The State of Kerala has declared Health Emergency due to COVID-19 novel coronavirus, cancelling all the public functions for a month. Government has requested cinema halls to stop their operations for the time being. In his press conference, the CM also requested the people to refrain from attending all public functions, festivals and weddings where a large number of people gather. He also requested people to conduct rituals keeping them limited at home.
According to the latest figures available on March 16 (Monday), the total number of positive cases of Coronavirus in India has soared up to 110 as per the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. Two deaths have been reported in Kalaburagi and West Delhi respectively.
Taking into consideration the rising number of Coronavirus cases, the Central Government on March 14 decided to treat the deadly virus as a “notified disaster.”
One of the most frustrating experiences in my life was being called out in front of 200 other students in my hostel cafeteria for being a girl and wearing volleyball shorts. I had just come from practice and was super hungry, but denied food until I came back covering my legs.
Did that really just happen?!
I’ve played multiple sports all my life at the state, national and international levels. Volleyball is one of them and I was definitely not going to give that up for some jerk telling me that wearing shorts was ‘disrespectful.’
When googling RSS, most mainstream articles talk about the organization dis-favouring women working outside of their homes and the lack of roles women carry within RSS. As a young graduate student, having just been ranked third in Europe for volleyball, I was seriously put off.
This perception changed recently. I met a girl around my age in Belgaum, Karnataka. She walked in with pink streaks in her hair and told me that she played squash at least three times a week. She was also an ambitious person, pursuing her law degree and only interested in getting married when she found the right guy. With all due respect to Belgaum, I was pleasantly surprised that I found my level of progressive thinking in a female hailing from a tier two city in India. I also found that apart from being an active member of the Rashtra Sevika Samiti and the ABVP over the last four years, she hails from a family which closely associated with the RSS over the past three generations.
To this I was baffled.
‘But aren’t they a bit conservative for your squash and the way you live you life?,’ I asked her.
Contrary to what I had read about the organization, I found that the negative perception I had of it was not true. In fact, this girl shared with me that there has indeed been a strong internal emphasis to encourage taking up leadership within the organization for over twenty years. And just a few days ago, it was refreshing to see the ABVP (an RSS-supported student organization) put on a women’s self-defence demonstration for International Women’s Day. It was even better to find out that the student-organizer for this event was a young female ABVP member who had not just worked on logistics but had also come up with and implemented the idea. ‘WHEN IN TROUBLE, CALL YOURSELF,’ read the slogan at the event. If that’s not empowering for women, I don’t know what is.
Back to sports. Not only is sport and exercise a part of my daily life, it is part of my identity. I have grown up playing, competing and even doing my homework on the floors of courts in between matches. It turns out that there is indeed focus on female sportspersons in the RSS. The initiative is called ‘Krida Bharati’ and focuses on building facilities to encourage women taking up sports seriously. To add to that, my Belgaum friend shared with me that there was also strong focus on spreading awareness about legal rights of women (Adhivakta Parishad), for presenting the history of the woman (Itihas Sankalan Samiti) and for women scientists (Shakti).
After learning all of this from an active, young lady member of the organizations, I saw the clear fallacies of mainstream media’s reporting on the RSS. This is far from an organization that is against women. It in fact supports women empowerment through encouraging sport, academics, economic stability via enabling organizations, policy and laws. Furthermore, the Sangh is aggressively taking up issues in education and empowering women to help change backward social mindsets that I faced while wearing volleyball shorts. Multiple activities are regularly organized to create awareness in families to change this backward thinking.
In addition to that, the Rashtra Sevika Samiti (the parallel organization of the Sangh run by women) has a footprint in over 20 countries and its work is expanding rapidly. All posts are held by women. The Samiti and Sangh often work together to encourage more participation from females.
I have always considered myself lucky for the exposure I have had. Educated in America. Played sport and competed in multiple cities and countries. A majority of girls in India have not done this, including my Belgaum squash friend. But from what she told me, I am proud that organizations like the Sangh and the Samiti are not just encouraging women empowerment, but also changing the backward social mindsets of people like that guy that called me out for wearing volleyball shorts.
It is only because of organizations like these that such disparaging mindsets towards progressive women will know better and change for good.
Madhya Pradesh Governor Lalji Tandon today wrote the Chief Minister Kamal Nath ordering a floor test to prove majority on 17th March, 2020.

In a strongly worded letter, the Governor rebuked Kamal Nath and said that despite asking him to prove majority on the floor on 16th, it was not done today. “Despite having told you to prove majority on the floor on 16th, you did not mention it in your speech today. Moreover, the assembly was adjourned till 26th March,” Governor Tandon wrote in his letter.
He further added, “I am disappointed you did not adhere to the time limit I had given you to prove majority. Moreover, your reasons to not get the floor test done are baseless. Hence, I appeal to you to respect the democracy and prove the majority on the floor by 17th March 2020. Otherwise, it will be considered that you do not have the majority.”
Earlier today, the Madhya Pradesh state assembly was adjourned in view of coronavirus outbreak. Following that, the BJP approached the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court has listed the matter for hearing tomorrow.
On March 11, the World Health Organisation (WHO) declared the Novel Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) outbreak as a pandemic and reiterated the call for countries to take immediate actions and scale up the response to treat, detect and reduce transmission to save people’s lives.

Accusing the Kamal Nath-led-government of avoiding the trust vote, former Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said, “Madhya Pradesh govt has lost its majority, that is why they are running away from it, we will ask govt to bring a confidence motion. Chief Minister has said he wants a floor test, then why is he not doing it? Our only demand is a floor test.”
He added, “The Chief Minister is running away from the trust vote as he knows that the government lacks a majority. BJP has the majority and we have appealed the Governor to order floor test at the earliest. He has assured us to protect our constitutional rights.” BJP MLAs were also paraded before the Governor, Lalji Tandon.

On Sunday, Kamal Nath said, “I have told Governor that I am ready for the floor test and the MLAs who have been held captive should be released. I will speak to the Speaker about the floor test,” he said. In a letter to the Governor, he alleged that on March 10, BJP leaders reached the Speaker’s residence to hand over the resignation letter of the rebel MLAs. “None of the 19 MLAs was present to tender resignation at the speaker’s residence,” the letter alleged.
Earlier today, the Governor had addressed the assembly and stated, “All must follow the rules under the Constitution so that dignity of Madhya Pradesh remains protected.”
The political drama in Madhya Pradesh has come to an abrupt anti-climax as the assembly session has been adjourned for ten days till March 26 in the wake of the Coronavirus scare. The floor test that was scheduled today by Governor Lalji Tandon has been postponed for now too. The BJP was thus forced to reach out to the Supreme Court.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has summoned Reliance Group Chairman, Anil Ambani, on March 16 as a part of its probe into the charges of money laundering against Rana Kapoor, the founder of Yes Bank that is reeling under a state of crisis. Ambani is one of the largest borrowers of the bank with an exposure of ₹14,000 crores.
An official from the Enforcement Directorate informed that the investigative agency is drafting a list of top borrowers of Yes Bank and the large yet risky credit facilities extended during the tenure of Rana Kapoor. He added, “The management and promoters will be examined and questioned in the coming weeks.”
The ED had sought information regarding terms and conditions, side agreements of the loans disbursed by Yes Bank to Anil Ambani for his construction company. He is yet to reply to the email sent by the Enforcement Directorate. On March 6, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has said that the Reliance Group, Vodafone Idea, DHFL, IL&FS, Essel Group and CG Power were some of the major defaulters of the stressed Yes Bank.
It is reported that Anil Ambani has cited some health issue and may be issued a later date.
Last week, Ambani’s firm stated, “Reliance Group states it has NIL direct or indirect exposure to Rana Kapoor, Former CEO of YES Bank, or his wife or daughters, or any entities controlled by Rana Kapoor or his family. Reliance Group says its entire exposure to Yes Bank is fully secured and transacted in the ordinary course of business. Reliance Group is committed to honour repayments of all its borrowings from Yes Bank Ltd through its various asset monetisation programmes which are all at advanced stages.”
The Central Bureau of Investigation has booked Yes Bank Founder Rana Kapoor and his wife Bindhu Kapoor for receiving ₹307 crore bribe from Avantha Realty Ltd. in connection to the purchase of a 1.2-acre uber-luxe bungalow at 40, Amrita Shergill Marg, New Delhi that was valued at ₹550 crores. Yes Bank is accused of not initiating actions to recover ₹1900 crores from the Avantha Group, despite the group of companies defaulting on its payment.
Earlier, the Enforcement Directorate was investigating whether a dummy company controlled by Kapoor and two of his daughters, Doit Urban Ventures, received kickbacks to the tune of ₹600 crores in return for granting a ₹4,450 crore loan to Dewan Housing Financial Corporation Limited (DHFL).
In the wake of the Novel Coronavirus outbreak, the Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Monday invoked the Epidemic Diseases Act of 1897 and declared a new set of bans to limit the spread of the highly contagious disease.
In the press release, the AAP supremo announced a complete ban on social, religious and political gatherings of more than 50 people in the national capital. The ban, effective immediately, will also be applicable on Shaheen Bagh ‘protest’ site where Muslim women have been sitting on a ‘protest’ against the amended Citizenship Law for the past three months now.
The directions issued by the Delhi government on Coronavirus spread
Disregarding the government appeal to avoid large gatherings and crowded places, the Shaheen Bagh protestors have been recklessly continuing with their demonstration. They have apparently been praying and reading the Quran at the protest site, believing that praying to Allah would safeguard them from the coronavirus crisis.
“We have already shut schools, colleges, swimming pools so far. Today, it has been decided to order gyms, night clubs and spas also to close as a precautionary measure,” Kejriwal said while addressing a media briefing after a review of the steps taken by the city government to prevent community transmission of the infection.
“All religious, social, cultural gatherings with more than 50 people have been banned,” said Arvind Kejriwal. The ban would not apply to weddings, said the Chief Minister, asking people to avoid them voluntarily.

Arvind Kejriwal underscored that precautionary measures, especially regular washing of hands, using sanitisers could help deal with the deadly disease, furthering that mobile washbasins with soap would be installed at various places in the city.
“Five hundred beds that have been kept aside in case there is a need for hospitalisation at a large scale,” Kejriwal said, furthering that the administration was prepared for an eventuality where a larger number of people may be infected as a precautionary measure.
The national capital has reported seven confirmed coronavirus cases so far. As of now, India has 112 confirmed cases of COVID-19 coronavirus and two people have as of now died with the infection.
Yesterday, Italy reported 368 deaths from the Wuhan Corona virus pandemic. The day before, it was 250 deaths. The crisis of a generation is unfolding before our very eyes. The horror of exponential growth is beginning to sink in.
When you look at how the numbers exploded in China, Italy, France, the US and Iran, it is easy to get a sinking feeling that the world is coming to an end. However, in fighting this crisis, numbers and data will play almost as big a role as healthcare services. The cases are bound to go up every single day. But by how much and how fast? It is only these numbers that can tell us if we are winning.
This very informative graphic from the Times of India tells us the story of how other countries have fared so far.
How countries have fared on coronavirus (image: TimesofIndia)
In China and Korea, the number of cases were initially growing at a terrifying rate of doubling every day. At this rate, it would have engulfed those countries in no time. Since then, with intensive lockdowns and social distancing, the curves have flattened out. European countries like Spain, France, Germany and Italy are stuck in the same zone, with cases doubling every 2-3 days.
So while it may appear that Italy is ‘worst affected,’ the truth is that France, Germany and Spain are doing just as badly. Italy just happens to be further along the curve than these countries are.
What really matters here is not the total number of cases, but the slope of this curve. You can see that Japan seems to have done a much better job, with cases doubling every week. In Hong Kong, they have performed very admirably, where it might take a whole month for the number of cases to double.
So where is India? By Sunday night we had 110 cases, up by 10% from 100 the night before. This Wikipedia graphic seems particularly helpful.
COVID-19 cases in India (image: Wikipedia)
Every digit in this graphic matters. Say 111 cases may not feel like it is a lot more than 110 cases. But the fact is that 111 represents a growth of 11% over the previous day, whereas 110 represents growth of 10%. When dealing with exponential growth, every little bit counts. If the number of cases yesterday had been 115, that would have been 15% growth. Although that’s just 5 more than 110, think about, say, the difference between an interest rate of 10% and an interest rate of 15%. The cumulative effect is enormous.
The number of cases in India has roughly doubled in 1 week, which suggests we are closer to the path of Japan.
Let us consider the most terrifying question first. Is it going to get as bad as Italy or USA?
COVID-19 cases in Italy
You can see that once the case number reached 80 or so, it began to explode. And since then, it has been growing daily at rates well over 20%. From 80, it jumped straight to 150 the next day and 227 the next.
In India’s case, we were at 77 on March 12. We were at 110 by the end of March 15. And you can see at a glance that our daily growth rates are well below 20%. That’s a huge difference.
The picture from the US is even more heartbreaking.
Though the US has a lot fewer cases than Italy, the situation of the former is actually much more grim. The daily growth rate is breaking 30% fairly regularly, with several above 40%! This looks like apocalypse. No doubt about it.
India went from 77 to 110 in 3 days. The US went from 85 to 252 in 3 days. Significant difference.
There are some obvious questions people might ask here about India. Are we testing enough people? Perhaps our case numbers are also growing at those terrifying rates and we just don’t know?
Well, not very likely for at least two reasons:
(1) When case numbers were around 80-100 in either US or Italy, those countries were pretty chilled out about the disaster, hardly testing anyone. They were caught napping. If anything, we are probably testing people much more than they were back when they were at our level.
(2) It makes very little sense to consider number of tests per unit of population. A virus does not spread evenly. It starts with incoming foreign travelers and radiates out of a center. As long as we can trace those rays efficiently and test the people who come in contact, we are doing fine. The rest of the population barely matters. The total international air traffic to India would be much less than the US. That’s what we need to look at.
Let us take one more look, this time at Brazil, a country where the number of cases has not piled into the thousands yet.
On March 11, India and Brazil had almost the same number of cases (~70). On March 14, Brazil reached 180 and India 100. See how quickly the gap has opened up.
It is of course way too early to celebrate. There is no room for complacency. But remember that an exponential curve is extremely unforgiving and differences in growth rates will show up very quickly. This is one instance in which early numbers can be taken quite seriously.
So there is grounds for cautious optimism. As of this moment. We do not know for sure what tomorrow will bring. Or even the next hour. Everything could fall apart any second.
The next seven days are crucial. And each one of us is a soldier in this fight.
Bear in mind that we do not even know what it means to “survive” the crisis. For now, we can close our borders, halt our economy. But the US and the continent of Europe are being ravaged by the virus right now with no end in sight. We cannot keep everything closed permanently. If 60-70% of the US or Europe get the virus, what do we do? Permanently shut off all contact with them? Nobody knows.
It is at times like these that you understand the full meaning of the ancient Chinese curse: “May you live in interesting times.“
From the United States to China, countries across the globe are in throes of the insidious coronavirus, with the number of cases growing exponentially and more than 5000 already perished worldwide due to the pernicious virus. Public health system across the world has been under considerable strain as the countries continue to wrangle with an unprecedented catastrophe.
However, despite the enormity of the crisis befalling the world, some western quacks seem to be exploiting the global trepidation as they palm off bizarre and outlandish remedies as reliable cures for the contagion that is rapidly spreading its ugly and venomous claws. Banking on the public anxiety, the western televangelists are advocating unfounded measures as a treatment for the novel coronavirus.
Here are some of the charlatans who are riding on the coronavirus scare and selling snake oil to the unsuspecting people in this hour of global crisis:
American televangelist Kenneth Copeland claims to cure people of coronavirus from the TV studio
Days before Donald Trump administration announced a national emergency in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, a video of American televangelist Kenneth Copeland claiming to cure the coronavirus victims remotely from his TV studio had gone viral. Copeland made the preposterous assertion on ‘Victory’ channel during a programme “Standing Against Coronavirus” in which he was seen asking his viewers to touch the television screen in order to receive the divine treatment.
Televangelist Jim Bakker endorses a mysterious silver solution as a panacea for coronavirus
In the show The Jim Bakker Show, the televangelist was seen endorsing the mitigating effects of a mysterious silver solution to cure the coronavirus contagion. Even as the scientists across the world are struggling to create an antidote for the virus, Bakker got a so-called ‘health expert’ on his show to promote the silver solution who fallaciously claimed that the solution was capable of ‘completely killing” the strains of coronavirus.
However, Bakker was served with a lawsuit by the Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt for misrepresentations about the effectiveness of ‘Silver Solution’ as a treatment for 2019 novel coronavirus.
American Radio host Alex Jones peddles toothpaste that he falsely claims to kill the coronavirus
Jones is accused of misleading his listeners with mistruths and dangerous lies about the treatment of coronavirus. On his Infowars program, Jones told his listeners that the silver-infused Superblue toothpaste being sold on his website has been verified by federal officials as stuff that kills the whole SARS-corona family at ‘point-blank range’, despite the Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention claiming otherwise.
Conservative Christian pastor claims only “sissies” and “pansies” wash their hands to prevent coronavirus
An orthodox pastor, Jonathan Shuttlesworth, a televangelist who co-founded Revival Today TV, strongly reprimanded churches who have suggested measures to prevent coronavirus and called them “sissies” and “pansies” who have been “neutered”. He contended that those who use hand sanitiser have “fake faith” and “no balls”.
Online healers charging £4 to £80 in Europe with the bogus claims of curing the coronavirus
A rampant online market for the sale of unfounded coronavirus solution is flourishing in Europe and USA as countries across the world are on a red alert to fight the novel virus. Fraudulent sellers are fleecing fraught consumers who are seeking medication for the virus online. Sellers on Fiverr assert that their methods such as ‘healing energy’, ‘bio magic principles’ and ‘Islamic method’ are able to cure the virus and are charging anywhere between £4 to £80 for the outlandish services.
