Derek O’Brien, who is angry at ‘Adopt a Heritage’ scheme, led a panel backing monument adoption

0

In a shining example of hypocrisy so bright, it blinds you even with your eyes closed, Trinamool Congress’ Derek O’Brien has set a new bar for hypocrisy. Trinamool Congress’ (TMC) Rajya Sabha member Derek O’Brien yesterday displayed anger and outrage at Government of India’s ‘Adopt a Heritage‘ initiative which aims to rope in private players for development of basic and advanced tourist amenities and look after operation and management of these amenities. Derek, while voicing his anger referred to the same initiative as monuments being ‘sold’.

Chiming in his concerns was also TMC chief Mamata Banerjee, who called it a sad and dark day in our history.

However, it has come to light that last month, the Standing Committee on Transport, Tourism and Culture, which is headed by Derek O’Brien himself, not only welcomed the ‘Adopt a Heritage’ initiative but also recommended that major corporates may be compelled to adopt the heritage sites under CSR (corporate social responsibility). [pdf]

In October last year, 7 companies were shortlisted for the Adopt a Heritage initiative, where they would be called ‘Monument Mitra’. SBI Foundation will be looking after the historic Jantar Mantar in Delhi, Yatra Online Pvt. Ltd. will look over maintenance of Leh Palace, UNESCO World Heritage Site Hampi, Qutub Minar and Ajanta Caves while Mattancherry Palace Museum, and Safdarjung Tomb will be looked after by Travel Corporation of India Ltd. Adventure Tour Operator Association of India will take over the Gangotri Temple area and trail to Gaumukh and Mt. Stok Kangri, while TK International Limited will adopt the Sun Temple, Raja Rani Temple and Ratnagiri Monuments. Agrasen Ki Baoli will be taken over by Special Holidays Travel Pvt. Ltd. in collaboration with Rotary Club of Delhi, while the NBCC was shortlisted for the adoption of Purana Qila.

Earlier in 2016, 14 PSUs including the Steel Authority of India (SAI), Indian Oil, UCO Bank, ONGC, had adopted over 18 monuments, including the monuments at Lodi Gardens, Khajuraho Temples, and the Ahom Monuments in Assam.

Thus, one wonders what compelled O’Brien to make this drastic U-Turn and whether Indian politics has been reduced to opposing policies for the sake of petty politics alone, instead of merit.

Tea seller Prime Minister achieves what three generations of Nehru Dynasty could not

0

Every village in India now has electricity. A headline that was over 30 years past due. But on April 28, 2018, it finally became a reality.

Of course, media coverage of this historic moment is muted, if news channels are covering it at all. It’s not like something big has happened … like Taimur getting potty trained or like Rahul Gandhi managing to spell his own name.

You know when India wins, these are supposed to be moments when we come together and congratulate each other. They are moments when we are supposed to forget partisanship and embrace everyone no matter what their political creed.

Here is my reaction:

Anger, bitterness, and contempt.

Yes, that’s right. Because this moment, achieved on Apr 28, 2018, only makes me angry about the Congress Party and its Bharat Ratna Prime Ministers who have milked this nation for 55 years but couldn’t give us 100% rural electrification. They eagerly took their Bharat Ratnas but didn’t care to give us electricity, clean water, schools or sanitation.

Because the only thing they ever focused on was making sure their sons and daughters would become Prime Minister after them.

In 1950, India became a Republic. Jawaharlal Nehru assumed power as Prime Minister of India. In the elections that followed, the Congress won three-fourths of the seats in the Lok Sabha. They formed the government in every state. The whole country was at their feet. Every form of power was theirs.

In 1950, another thing happened, an event that quite literally no historian, no journalist would have recorded at that time. A little baby boy was born in an ordinary family in Vadnagar in Mehsana district of erstwhile Bombay state. He grew up on the Railway platform in Vadnagar, helping to sell tea.

Who would have thought that Jawaharlal Nehru, that all-powerful Prime Minister, and all his children and grandchildren after him would leave the job of 100% electrification unfinished? That it’s the little boy who would grow up to become Prime Minister and finally bring electric power to every village in this country?

Well, for that matter, who could have imagined a lot of the things that happened after 1950? Who could have imagined that newly independent India would spend the next four decades chasing the mirage of Communism and end up as a basket case by 1990? Who could have imagined that all the other countries of East and South East Asia would turn out to be tiger economies while India would remain stuck in the mud?

The Japanese had two nuclear bombs dropped on them. The Germans had their country literally turned to rubble, then carved up and divided between two hostile superpowers. The Israelis got a thin strip of desert to defend and like 4-5 large powerful Arab neighbours determined to wipe them out. The Japanese, the Germans and the Israelis all did fine. In 2014, India still had 18000 villages without electricity.

Who should we thank for this? Which Bharat Ratna winning Prime Minister?

Right now, there is a lively debate in the media about how to “debunk” PM Modi’s achievement. The favourite topic among experts is the official definition of “electrifying” a village.

Untitled.png

A village is considered electrified if just 10% of its households are connected to the grid.

Ridiculous? You bet.

You know what’s even more ridiculous? The fact that even this much could not be achieved in 70 years.

Imagine someone taking 70 years to learn A, B, C,…. It’s ridiculous. I agree. Even Rahul Gandhi could have learned the alphabet in 20-30 years. But knowing A, B, C,…  is better than not knowing anything at all. It is now that we begin the process of learning words by putting letters next to each other.

But you know what is the ridiculous thing of all? That all these knowledgeable experts who are dissecting the definition of “electrification” today was missing in action until May 26, 2014. The energy they have spent in “debunking” Modi … if 10% of that had been used for due diligence and auditing the performance of Bharat Ratna Prime Ministers, India would have been a much more advanced nation today.

One more thing. When others, including myself, began talking about this milestone on Twitter, we were faced by a small flock of Pidi trolls. They accuse me (and others on the Hindu right) of deliberately ignoring the work that UPA did towards electrifying villages.

Ha!

So let me make this clear. There is a huge difference between UPA electrifying a village and Modi sarkar electrifying a village. When UPA brings electricity to a village, it is merely compensating, some 30 years too late, for the work that their own leaders Nehru, Indira and Rajiv failed to do!

When Modi sarkar brings electricity to a village, it is picking up the slack for what three generations of the ruling Nehru clan could not do.

So, UPA gets no credit for bringing electricity to a village. Zero. Zilch. Why was there even one village in India that did not have electricity by, say, the year 1990? The only reason UPA has the opportunity to connect a village to the grid is because their own leaders were too lazy and incompetent to do it decades ago. You can’t encash the incompetence of your own leaders into political capital.

But then the Congress is no stranger to this form of argument, in effect taking advantage of its own incompetence. In 1950, the Congress Party set the nation on a disastrous socialist/communist track that ultimately blew up in our faces in 1990. From the early 70s, Dr Manmohan Singh was embedded in this socialist/communist system and became one of its prime beneficiaries, holding a series of powerful positions. When India’s economy collapsed in 1991 under the weight of Congress policies, the same Congress Party took credit for coming up with economic reforms 40 years late. After supporting Nehruvian socialism and benefitting immensely from it for 20 years, Honorable Dr Singh decided to take credit for bringing “economic reforms.”

I am glad that Narendra Modi made rural electrification a priority and finished the task. Otherwise, the Nehru Dynasty, 2-3 more generations down the line, would probably have been taking credit the day India finally achieved this milestone.

Piramal Group contemplates legal action against ‘The Wire’ for its malicious and defamatory article

0

The Wire had recently published a report on its website that alleged financial misconduct on part of Piyush Goyal in the transaction related to him selling his investment in a private firm, to the Piramal Group. The report alleged that Piyush Goyal kept the Prime Minister’s office in the dark about his selling of shares in Flashnet and that the transaction was not disclosed in the declaration to PMO. The piece had also gone hammer and tongs alleging impropriety, conflict of interest, and sale at an inflated price. We had busted the report earlier and punched several holes in the narrative that the author, who is known to be incompetent at her job, was trying to peddle.

The Piramal Group has also made a statement on the allegations made by The Wire, calling them ‘baseless’ and ‘devoid of any merit’.

“The malicious news article published on The Wire is libelous and is an attack on the reputation of the Piramal Group, which is contemplating immediate and appropriate measures, including defamatory action, against the online media entity and the individual(s) concerned,” the company said in the official statement. It added, “Piramal Estates Private Limited (PEPL) purchased Flashnet Info Solutions Private Limited, a firm owned by Piyush Goyal and Seema Goyal, in July 2014. The purchase consideration paid was the fair value of the underlying investments (movable and immovable assets) and the same was paid in July 2014 itself. This was based on an independent chartered accountant valuation.”

The Wire has attacked Piyush Goyal with half-truths and lies earlier as well. We had comprehensively busted The Wire report that alleged that Piyush Goyal had links with a company in default of 650 crores. The media portal is also fighting a defamation case worth Rs. 100 crores for a report it published against Jay Shah, son of Amit Shah. We had exposed the inaccuracies in that report as well.

It appears The Wire may have to fight another defamation case against them, something it appears to be used to by now.

Rahul Gandhi – The eternal work in progress

0

“Suppose you were an idiot, and suppose you were a member of Congress… but I repeat myself”

– Mark Twain

Admittedly, Mark Twain wasn’t talking about the Indian National Congress, but the quote fits so perfectly, especially given the man who leads INC today, that it is often hard to resist. Rahul Gandhi’s team of cheerleaders are like those elderly women in the family who cheer and get immensely enthused when a toddler learns to walk or speak. This man’s cerebral entourage is one of the biggest and best in the world and still he mumbles and falters like a new infant.

Ironically, the people are running with the torch for Rahul are intellectuals, journalists, economists and many learned people from various fields. One could perhaps empathise with the ideals and the philosophy of the party, but to cheer for this man-child whose educational qualifications, oratory skills and most importantly the skill for the job is highly questionable, is a trait that has me foxed everytime one sees it being played out.

It almost seems like it has been the tradition of the Congress party to make leaders out of interns in training. Indira Gandhi, post the death of Nehru was sceptical, unsure and a ‘work in progress’ when she was declared as the queen to the throne. Similar was the case of Rajiv Gandhi, who by his own admission was a reluctant politician. When the mother died, a pilot was made the Prime Minister of the largest democracy in the world. For such a coveted chair it would normally be thought, that a person would need to be skilled enough, but clearly, the crowned prince and princess’ of Congress, don’t need it.

Rahul Gandhi is an enigma for me. This man literally functions with very little or limited knowledge of the judiciary, executive and the legislative. This is just not me, every learned mind of Congress also would share the same belief but if they are trying to say otherwise, then they are plain trying to fool someone or just stifling a big dollop of laughter, in their own confines.

To hoist this half man half child to the most coveted chair in the country, everything that was ever revered by the greatest minds of history is being dragged on the streets, just so that baba gets to play King of the country. This can only be backed by the fact, that some of the biggest loyalists of Congress didn’t support the shameful Impeachment drama orchestrated by the menial attention seekers of Congress. He is the same Rahul Gandhi, who in the run to the 2014 elections in an interview to a very celebrated journalist, answered every question with ‘women empowerment’ and ‘youth motivation’; because that was what was taught to him. He was almost like a child who was being out of syllabus questions and had to fill in the blanks with gibberish just to ensure the length of the answer is acceptable.

Politics has always been a game of tug of war between those in power and those in opposition; that is what keeps democracy alive. But when the hunger for power turns the opposition into scavengers sacrificing the ethos, morality and the judicial system of the country, it is a trend any self-respecting nation would fear.

The brutality of the scavenging is such that they don’t mind colourising or politicising even the tragic rape and murder of an 8-year-old old. Suddenly, they stand with placards, trying to shame “Hindustan” and “Hindus”. The ignorant morons don’t seem to understand that by using the word Hindustan to malign the majority population of Hindus, what they are essentially doing is shaming the nation in front of the entire world. How does one uphold the image of the nation when the majority population is maligned? How does one a nation survive if a band of clowns, led by a bigger one, makes it their political mission to demonise 80% of the population (give or take) and in the process, malign the nation they wish to lead?

What the band of jokers led by Rahul Gandhi has done, is that they have managed to polarise the nation and communalise something as heinous as rapes. The Kathua rapist was a Hindu, The Ghaziabad rapist was a Muslim, and what Rahul has done, is turned the discussion around crimes against women, into a saffron vs green debate. Hindus should be ashamed for Kathua. Muslims should be ashamed for Geeta (if the same logic is applied), and in the process, the nation weeps.

In a country of more than 120 crore people, there can be varied views and several options to choose a leader to power. For many, Narendra Modi might not be the chosen one, but that does not mean that Rahul Gandhi can be an alternative; because if at all this happens, then it will be a massive beginning to an indisputable end.

Rahul Gandhi’s trusted aide admits being close to Vijay Mallya

Congress’ social media head Divya Spandana, who is known to share fake image and encouraging party workers to create multiple fake accounts, was mocked on Twitter yesterday after her old tweets showing her closeness to high profile loan defaulter and liquor baron Vijay Mallya resurfaced, especially after Congress tried to establish guilt by association between Prime Minister Modi and self-styled godman Asaram, who is convicted of raping a minor. Congress party’s official Twitter handle tweeted an old video showing PM Modi sharing the stage with Asaram, in a bid to downplay Modi’s image.

After her told tweets went viral, the issue was picked up by journalist Arnab Goswami and debated on his channel, Republic TV. While Divya Spandana admitted that she has known Vijay Mallya since she was a kid and Mallya had also sponsored a holiday for her, she tried to deflect attention by going after Arnab Goswami himself and even Rajeev Chandrasekhar, BJP Rajya Sabha MP.

Before these revelations by Divya Spandana, Twitter users had dug up her old tweets praising Mallya.

Twitterati even showed how with the change in Mallya’s fate, Divya changed her stand on him.

Following Asaram’s conviction, Congress Twitter handle had posted an old video showing PM Modi share stage with Asaram, with a caption how a man is known by the company he keeps, implying Modi should also be held guilty for Asaram’s crimes, just for his association with the rapist even before he was accused of a crime, let alone being convicted. If one follows the same logic, given Divya’s tweets praising Mallya, she should also be held responsible for Mallya’s alleged crimes. The lack of logic was so blinding that Divya even had to issue a clarification that how she is not really responsible for Mallya’s dealings.

The Congress party and especially, its social media in-charge Divya Spandana seems to have a tough time grasping simple concepts that come fairly easily to the rest of the world. If one is to trust Congress’ logic, everyone associated with Rahul Gandhi now, an accused in National Herald, should be castigated and ostracised in the even of his guilt is proved in the court of law. Also, every individual who was associated with Rahul Gandhi when he was accused of rape, should also be castigated.

The last Indian village without electricity now has power

0

In a big step towards nation building, the Indian government has claimed that the last Indian village which had not been electrified was brought in the national power grid on Saturday.

Of the 18,452 un-electrified villages as on April 2015, 17,181 villages have been electrified whereas 1,236 villages remain uninhabited. Leisang village in Senapati district of Manipur was brought in the national power grid at 5:30 pm on Saturday under the Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana. State run Rural Electrification corporation (REC) is the nodal agency appointed for executing the scheme.

As per government data, all of India’s 5,97,464 census villages have been electrified. At the onset of Rs. 75, 893 crore DDUGJY for village electrification launched by the Narendra Modi led NDA government in 2015, there were 18,452 villages. During the project, 1,275 additional villages were identified which didn’t have electricity. During the Independence Day speech in 2015, Prime Minister Modi had announced his resolve to connect all villages which are without power in the next 1,000 days. DDUGJY aims at providing round the clock power to rural households and adequate power to agricultural consumers.

Son of a poor tea seller set to become IAS officer after ranking 82 in UPSC

Deshaladan Charan the son of a tea seller is all set to become an IAS officer after he ranked a very impressive 82 in the recently announced UPSC results. Deshaladan hails from Sumalai village near Rajasthan’s city of Jaisalmer. His father a humble tea seller named Kushaldan Charan, runs a tea stall in Jaisalmer’s Chungi Naka square, and has had to go through various hardships in life.

Ever since his childhood, Deshaladan was considered a meritorious student and his father as a result left no stones unturned to support him at every step. When he was finding it difficult to fund his son’s education, Kushaldan took out a loan to make sure the studies didn’t stop.

Apart from having a humble upbringing, which further adds credence to Deshaladan’s ability, is the lack of good higher education facilities near Jaisalmer, despite which he managed such a good result.

This result by Deshaladan hasn’t just provided immense pride to his family members, it has also sent ripples of joy throughout his village.

Deshaladan’s story isn’t the only such success saga which has graced the UPSC examination.

It was reported in April last year that, Nirish Rajput the son of a tailor master, had cracked the IAS post by securing a 370 rank in UPSC. The 31 year old Nirish too battled poverty and used to live in a modest 300 square feet house in Madhya Pradesh’s Bhind district. Earlier he used to work odd jobs to make ends meet.

In another inspiring story, it was reported how Govind Jaiswal a son of a rickshaw puller had bagged a 48 in his very first attempt back in 2006. In order to keep his son’s dream alive, the father had sold his only plot of land to send his kid to Delhi for studies. Come 2016, Govind was the District Magistrate of East Delhi area.

The list of inspiring stories also extends to Ummul Kher who was disowned by her parents for wishing to study beyond the 8th standard. Despite suffering from a fragile bone disorder, she bagged an all India rank of 420.

Puducherry LG Kiran Bedi says no free rice if villages not clean

0

The Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry Kiran Bedi has announced that there will be no distribution of free rice if villages are not open defecation free and clean.

According to a report in The Indian Express, Kiran Bedi has stated that the distribution of free rice to people shall be conditional to the certification of the village being open defecation free and free of strewn garbage and plastics by submitting a joint certificate given by the MLA and the Commune Commissioner of the commune panchayat.

Bedi has set a deadline for 4 weeks to the concerned authorities in the villages to keep their surroundings clean. She has released an official statement expressing her displeasure at sanitary conditions of the villages in the Union Territory and has stated that the community leaders in the area have not shown participation in Swachh campaigns to keep their villages clean.

courtesy: The Indian Express

Kiran Bedi has announced in the statement that the directions have been issued to the Director of Civil Supplies in this regard and villages will be given a notice till 31st May to make their villages clean. She has also added that the distribution of rice will be made after the certification.

Kiran Bedi shared pictures from her visit to the villages in the UT and expressed her displeasure at the present sanitary conditions of the villages.

About half the population of Puducherry is dependent upon the free rice distribution scheme by the government. The LG has stated that this action will inoculate a sense of responsibility amongst the people and hasten the objective of the Swachh Grameen Union Territory.

Update: The order issued by Puducherry Lt Governor Kiran Bedi now stands withdrawn.

Sacked UP Minority Commission member arrested for impersonating politicians

0

Kunwar Afzal Chaudhary, a former Uttar Pradesh Minority Commission member was arrested by Ghaziabad police on Thursday for impersonation. A local BJP leader, Chaudhary was appointed to the commission in February of this year.

As per a TOI report, Chaudhary was accused of pressurising government officials to carry out his tasks by misusing his position as the minority commission’s member. Besides this, as per Ghaziabad SSP Vaibhav Krishna, he and other senior officials used to receive calls from him, with a demand that they do tasks for him which weren’t “in accordance with the law”. Chaudhary has also been accused of enriching himself after successfully extracting the said favours.

A Business Standard report has claimed that the demands included illegal activities like getting two assault accused off the hook and asking Ghaziabad’s District Magistrate Ritu Maheswari, to rule in favour of a retired official in a land matter. In the assault case, the two individuals were accused of thrashing a UP roadways bus conductor and to get them off the hook, Chaudhary unsuccessfully called up Ghaziabad’s SSP.

One of the techniques used by him to put further pressure, besides taking in a strong manner, was impersonating powerful politicians. Some of the politicians impersonated include UP’s deputy CM Dinesh Sharma, former BJP leader Yashwant Sinha and former Gujarat CM Shankar Singh Vaghela.

The authorities soon were suspicious of his action and the police launched an investigation four days prior to his arrest. They produced a four page report on the basis of their findings, following which he was sacked from his position as minority commission member by the Yogi government.

Besides Chaudhary, the police also arrested his accomplice Krishna Kumar. During their investigation the police recovered five mobile phones, sim cards and a Mercedes. The charges framed against him include that of cheating, impersonation and forgery.

Gun for hire, ‘The Wire’ misfires, targets Piyush Goyal again with falsities and lies

The leftist propaganda website, ‘The Wire’, seems to have developed a penchant for hitjobs, done with blatant lies, half-truths, and concocted stories. Today, they are back with another hitjob that targets Union Minister Piyush Goyal. Earlier this week, we had predicted that a hit job against Goyal was in the pipeline about his professional and business activities before he became a cabinet minister. Once again, we were right.

What is interesting is that The Wire is back to attacking Piyush Goyal after Congress took the mantle from them. Congress had come up with a press conference that entirely focused on business activities of Piyush Goyal, trying to insinuate wrongdoings almost in The Wire-style. The press conference followed after the first hitjob by The Wire was largely ignored by the mainstream media after it was comprehensively busted by us.

Perhaps the Congress party thought that instead of outsourcing the job, they should do it themselves. However, the party in a way ended up giving away the hint that their allegations were weak because, in their own documents that they shared in the press conference, it was clearly mentioned that Piyush Goyal and his wife had resigned from all such companies before he became the cabinet minister. This was done to maintain highest standards of ethics and avoid any conflict of interest, which actually displayed good conduct on the part of the Minister.

Coming to the latest hit job by The Wire, the premise of this new falsehood stands on wafer-thin ice. Rohini Singh, the author of this fantastical story alleges that the Prime Minister’s office was kept in the dark about Piyush Goyal selling his shares in a privately held company Flashnet.

The story by ‘The Wire’ falsely alleges that the sale of shares took place in September 2014. Documents accessed by us tell a different tale altogether. We have found out that the sale took place prior to the declaration dated 25th July 2014 and the entire sale price was also received by Piyush Goyal in his bank before this date.

We spoke to a CA and he confirmed that if the shares were already sold and the amount received before the declaration then it obviously can’t contain the value of shares since it would be a double accounting. The CA also confirmed that when a company is valued, the “Fair Market Value” needs to be worked out, and for that, all assets and liabilities must be considered at market value, and not at book value. He also opined that typically, land and building book value (i.e. the cost of acquisition) is much lower than the market price. The same can happen in case of shares held as an investment.

BJP spokesperson confirmed that the “sale was made at full market value as per third party, independent, expert valuation.”

The report also tries to cast aspersions on the valuation of the company. It relies on the net worth of the company as declared in the 2015 filings. But Singh “forgets” to account for one aspect: Net worth in financial statements and in company filings is shown at book value i.e. at cost of acquisition. Land, Building, Property, Investment in shares, all are always recorded at cost in a company’s balance sheet, and as per prudential accounting norms, unrealised gains due to increase in market value are never recorded in the books of accounts.

However, when a company is sold, its real value needs to be determined, which entails taking into account the market value of all such assets. We have found that the valuation of the company was done by an independent, third-party expert who valued the assets at fair market value.

Thus, Rohini’s innuendo that a company whose net worth was just Rs 10 cr was sold for around Rs 48 cr does not hold ground because Rs 10 cr is the book value, whereas Rs 48 Cr is arrived at after considering market values, and is based on a valuation by an expert, not a journalist who was fired from her job for not doing her job right.

The Wire also insinuated conflict of interest because Piramal is a “billionaire with substantial interests in the infrastructure sector including power”. The fact is, Piramal indeed doesn’t appear to be directly in power sector. Their NBFC arm regularly lends to all sectors. This can’t be called being a billionaire with stakes in the power sector and hence, their conflict of interest theory also doesn’t hold water.

So essentially, it does seem that a professional like Piyush Goyal, who had a successful investment banking career before he became a minister has still not learnt the art of living without working which many Congressmen inspired by Rahul Gandhi have learned to do. It seems Piyush Goyal is being maligned and targeted because Congress believes that everyone in politics should be like Rahul Gandhi without ever having done serious work for a living.

The Congress supported by The Wire and Rohini Singh have adopted the same strategy for all their hit jobs. Make assertions based on lies. Selectively quote the truth. Word the allegations carefully to avoid culpability. And attempt to link financials of a future date much after the Minister has left the company, to show some sort of impropriety that never existed.

Perhaps ‘The Wire’ should try delving into facts rather than being political hit men.
