Siddaramaiah unveils a state flag in the run up to Karnataka assembly elections

The Karnataka government has approved a state flag and will be sending it to the centre for approval. As of now only Jammu and Kashmir has a separate official state flag. Karnataka had been using an unofficial state flag so far. This is the first attempt by any state other than J&K to propose an official state flag.

The Indian constitution does not approve or prohibit a state flag currently. Thus, the issue will be a matter of debate not only among political parties but also legal experts. A committee had been formed by the state government in order to study the matter.

The advocate general of Karnataka had told The Hindu that the state flag was not in violation of the constitution as long as it did not disrespect the national flag.

“In Bommai’s case, the Supreme Court has declared that federalism is a basic feature of the Constitution and States are supreme in their sphere. This being the Constitutional position, there is no prohibition in the Constitution for the State to have its own flag. However, the manner in which the State flag is hoisted should not dishonour the national flag. It has to be always below the national flag. The national flag code specifically authorises the use of other flags subject to the regulation by the court. So State flag is not unauthorised”

The Chief Minister of Karnataka, Siddaramiah said, ‘As there is no prohibition to a state flag in the constitution, I hope that the centre will approve’, while launching the flag in front of the press. He also stated that the colour white had been added to the existing red and yellow flag as it represents peace. The state emblem has been included at the centre of the flag.

Kerala: As cops look on, SFI activists brutally attack ABVP workers inside a police station

Activists of Student’s Federation of India, the student wing of CPI(M) have been accused of brutally attacking ABVP workers in Kerala’s Kollam region. As per a report published in Malayali news website “Manoramaonline”, one ABVP activist’s head was split open by a rock by SFI Activists inside the Kollam East Police Station, while around 50 policemen, including the Circle Inspector, looked on.

As per the report published on Thursday, a tense situation had prevailed in the region’s SN Law college since morning, due to SFI activists preventing the formation of an ABVP unit on campus. This resulted in the police arriving to solve the conflict. They too ended up getting attacked by SFI activists, which resulted in a hand injury to the East Kollam Circle inspector.

As a result of the violence, four SFI activists were taken to the Kollam East police station, after which their comrades raided the station premises to demand their release. Around this time, Ajith and another ABVP activist too arrived there to register a complaint regarding the campus violence.

The SFI activists saw the ABVP activists and promptly proceeded to attack them. This resulted in grave injuries to Ajith whose head was split open using a rock. Shockingly the police did nothing to stop the SFI activists from attacking the ABVP duo. The police even refused to provide a vehicle so that Ajith could be taken to the hospital. He was later taken to the hospital on an ABVP activist’s bike.

Incidentally, instances of SFI using violence to promote its goals is nothing new. It has been reported how SFI in Kerala has used force to prevent the entry of student unions belonging to other parties.

Besides this, once the Maharaja’s College in Kochi, was its principal’s chair getting burnt by SFI activists, who called it a “symbolic protest”. The police had also recovered weapons like bombs, machetes and iron rods from the college’s hostel room for which six students including SFI’s President, Secretary were sacked.

The practices of the SFI activists are so macabre that when the Principal of Victoria College in Palakkad retired in 2016, they constructed her grave on the campus and adorned it with a garland. They also placed a death note beside it, detailing the “charges” against her.

It has also been noted that the police has been known to remain a mere bystander when violence has been perpetrated by the leftists. This was seen during an attack on the BJP office in Trivandrum which carried out by CPM workers. The CCTV footage of the attack showed most of the policemen, who were tasked with the office’s security, choosing to remain mere bystanders.

Gay male escort compiles 1200 page dossier on ‘actively gay’ priests in the Catholic Church to expose their ‘double life’

Francesco Mangiacapra, a gay male escort, has compiled a 1200 page dossier containing the names of 40 actively gay priests and seminarians. The dossier has been forwarded to the Vatican by the Archdiocese of Naples. According to reports, the dossier contains erotic photos and explicit WhatsApp messages.

The escort told the local media that he could not put up with the “hypocrisy” any longer. He said that he means no harm to the Catholic Church. In an interview with Catalonia Today, he said, “I want to explain right away that mine is not a gesture that goes against the Catholic Church, indeed, it is paradoxically in its favour” However, the escort clarified that he was not accusing anyone of committing any criminal acts such as pedophilia or rape. “We’re talking about sins, not crimes,” he was quoted as saying.

The Catholic Church considers homosexuality to be a “grave depravity” and asserts that the LGBT Catholics are “called to chastity”. The Vatican has been rocked by many grave scandals in the past involving pedophilia and sexual predators among the clergy. Compared to the rest, the present case appears to be much milder as the presence of actively gay clergymen has been an open secret in recent times.

Exposé on Adhia receiving ‘gifts’ proves economic downturn and curbing of civil liberties in Modi raj

0

Economic experts such as film stars, columnists, sports historians, sociologists and other Marxist/pseudo-Marxist commentators have for long criticised the economic policies of the Modi government. India has continuously experienced an economic downturn ever since Narendra Modi has become the Prime Minister.

Along with a free-falling economy, civil liberties are also increasingly taking a hit. Many lifelong critics of Modi have screamed from every possible place explaining how their voices are being suppressed, and how freedom of expression in India is in grave threat.

Both the above have now been conclusively proven by none other than Modi’s own Hasmukh Adhia, who happens to be the Finance Secretary. In a massive scoop, part-time journalist & full-time troll Swati Chaturvedi has written in the leftist propaganda website, TheWire about how there was an “attempt to bribe” Adhia during the Diwali of 2016. The “attempt to bribe” is not important, but the details emerging from it are of serious nature and indict the Modi government.

Firstly, the “attempted bribe” consisted of two gold biscuits of 20 grams each, the price of which has been estimated by Chaturvedi as Rs 2 lakhs. Park that thought and compare how Karti Chidambaram is alleged to have taken a bribe of USD 10 million in the hay days of UPA. If the economy is growing, why aren’t bribes growing? Is it not the cause for concern that officials of the rank of Adhia, are being pegged at only Rs 2 lakhs by bribe givers? Shouldn’t Modi resign over this failure?

The low amount of bribe also reveals how humans have been devalued in Modi’s era. Just Rs 2 lakhs are being offered to a senior finance ministry official. Just Rs 2 lakhs. Let that sink in. A man has to go into a whole lot of trouble to break and bend rules to favour someone who could potentially make crores. But the man’s efforts are valued at just Rs 2 lakhs. Modi has succeeded in reducing the wage rate by this much!

Secondly, the “attempt to bribe” was peculiar in nature because the gold had been sent by an anonymous person. Everybody knows that the basic concept of a “bribe” is to ensure that the receiver knows who the bribe giver is, so that the receiver can favour the bribe giver. But in Modi’s raj, fearing retribution and preferring to maintain his privacy, poor bribe-givers are forced to attempt to bribe officials without even disclosing their name. They then have to live on the hope that the official will guess which businessman is responsible for the bribe, guesstimate what favour the particular businessman might want, and do it anyway.

While Swati has noted the “attempted bribe” she has forgotten to note this aspect of severe constraint on freedom to express the desire to be corrupt. Adhia may well claim that since the sender is unknown, it was never a bribe, since a bribe necessarily means the sender reveals himself. But can we rule out the chance that the sender was intimidated by the growing climate of intolerance in India? Is it possible that at some point the sender was forced to link his Aadhar to some database and hence worried of his privacy, he avoided revealing his identity?

Adhia has also goofed on 1 major issue. Why did he accept the gold. Granted he immediately deposited in the official toshkhana of the Government, and also has a receipt for it, but why did he accept it in the first place? Couldn’t he have taken the help of an astrologer to guess that an anonymous person would drop off 2 gold biscuits at his house? If he had taken this simple precaution, he might have been able to put a board on his house specifically banning delivery of anonymously sent gold biscuits. This failure to act raises substantial suspicion.

With this impressive story centred around a case of “attempted bribery” where neither the bribe receiver kept the birbe, nor the bribe giver identify himself to extract favour, Swati has once again proven her chops as an investigative journalist. Such in-depth reporting on seemingly small issues gets ignored by senior and real journalists.

The huge reduction in bribe value, and the complex method of bribing taken by the briber, where Adhia was forced to guess who the briber is, shows very clearly how Modi has failed in spurring growth in India, and has also suppressed the voices of people who want to speak to officials in his Government.

Very surely, this action will negatively impact India’s Ease of Doing Business rank in the coming year. Gone are the days in UPA era, when bribe giving was done at high values, was done so easily, without any fear of retribution. Today we are forced to debate: Why did an official not accept a bribe, instead of debating, why an officer took bribe.

The Congress party reduces women empowerment to a caricature on International Women’s Day

The Congress Party has time and again displayed in the past the sheer disconnect with the ground realities of India. On the occasion of International Women’s Day, the official twitter handle of the the Congress Party decided to conduct a poll that asked women to state how they planned to celebrate the day. The options were ‘drinking what you love’ (an obvious allusion to alcohol), ‘laughing out loudly’ (an allusion the time when Renuka Chaudhary was mocked for laughing hysterically during Narendra Modi’s speech in the Parliament), ‘late night loitering’ and ‘all of the above’.

One can truly appreciate the depravity of the times we live in when one realizes that equality between the sexes has been interpreted as women consuming alcohol, laughing hysterically on occasions that demand seriousness, with no consideration for proper etiquette, and loitering on the streets. When so many campaigns are run to discourage people from consuming alcohol, the largest opposition party in the country thinks it is appropriate to celebrate women consuming alcohol. Of course, women should have the liberty to consume alcohol should they choose to, however, it is highly reprehensible that a political party thinks consuming alcohol is an integral feature of women empowerment.

The extent to which the priorities of modern feminists are misplaced can be truly gauged by their utter lack of concern for the poor women and the downtrodden for whom mere survival is an ordeal. The housewife, the mother, the ordinary working woman does not consider any of the priorities of the feminists as essential for them. Crores of women have received free LPG connections through the Ujwala Yojana of the NDA government, millions of free electricity connections are being provided to families, criminals are being eliminated at a rapid pace by the Uttar Pradesh government under Yogi Adityanath. So, who has done more for women empowerment? Modern feminists who constantly whine on social media because their feelings have been hurt or these ‘Patriarchal Hindu males’?

The social media cell of the Congress Party insinuates that women will somehow throw the shackles set on them by Patriarchy by consuming alcohol, laughing like maniacs and loitering on the streets. Well, I am not sure about throwing off shackles but they will certainly be harming their liver, considered by everyone around them as an ill-mannered brat and waste a considerable amount of time which could have otherwise been spent in more productive pursuits. And really, women are not banned from consuming alcohol. They can still drink should they choose to. But what exactly is the Congress party trying to achieve by presenting the consumption of alcohol as a noble pursuit? Everyone who drinks alcohol would agree with me when I say that consumption of alcohol is not something to be encouraged, for men or women and that consuming alcohol to celebrate Women’s Day or ‘Fight the Patriarchy’ is stupid at best and an indication of psychological instability at worst.

The official twitter handle of the Karnataka unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party strongly condemned the Congress’ tweet.

Of course, people were not pleased either with the Congress party and let their opinions known on social media.

The Congress Party has become immensely disconnected with the aspirations, ambitions and the concerns of our countrymen. What perhaps makes this poll worse, is that the Congress’ social media pursuits are run by a woman, Divya Spandana. The one credited with the nonexistent “revival of Rahul Gandhi” on Social Media. The one who has been hailed as a symbol of woman empowerment. For her to condone reducing woman empowerment to such caricatural proportions is shameful.

Reports reveal that ED questioned journalist Vir Sanghvi among others in the INX Media scam probe

As per a report by DNA, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) had interrogated about 40 people including senior journalist Vir Sanghvi to build its case in the INX Media scam, which has now seen the arrest of Karti Chidambaram, the son of former Finance Minister P Chidambaram. As per a DNA journalist, Sanghvi was interrogated by the ED on 5th January.

As per the report, Sanghvi had denied allegations of him facilitating a meeting between Karti Chidambaram and Indrani, Peter Mukerjea the INX Media promoters. The report claims that Sanghvi had responded to the allegations by stating that Peter Mukerjea already knew Chidambaram by 2007 when a said meeting alleged by Indrani took place.

DNA also quoted Sanghvi regarding the questioning, who called it a routine investigation of about 40 executive and investors which supposedly didn’t include the Karti Chidambaram angle. When it comes to the allegations of “payments” being made to Karti Chidambaram, Sanghvi has claimed that the matter related to May 2008 and he no longer worked with the INX group then.

Sanghvi is also quoted as saying that he used to work with INX Media’s sister company INX News till January 2008 and had filed a complaint with the I&B Ministry regarding financial irregularities. He also claimed that he wasn’t on talking terms with Peter Mukerjea and had some open battle with him.

The claims that the Enforcement Directorate had questioned Sanghvi has been corroborated by a Hindu report, which talks about the ED recording the journalist’s statement in connection with the case. Sanghvi as per the report was approached by the agency to “determine the nature of the financial irregularities”.

The INX Media scam pertains to the Chidambaram father-son duo being under scanner regarding the FIPB (Foreign Investment Promotion Board) approvals being provided to INX media, allegedly in exchange of bribes given to Advantage Strategic Consulting Pvt Limited, a firm controlled by Karti Chidambaram.

International Women’s Day 2018 : Read what women members had to say in Rajya Sabha

Today’s session of Rajya Sabha began with a statement on women’s day by the Chairman Venkiah Naidu. He said:

Today is international women’s day. March 8, 2018, is a day to celebrate the honour, untiring commitment and determination of ordinary women in India and throughout the world justice to achieve equality and economic development. Famous words of Mahatma Gandhiji, ‘Be the change you want to see in the world’ are probably more relevant today than ever before. Many issues concerning women get highlighted today. But two things which I feel should receive renewed focus and need more attention [are] gender equality and safety of women. We have to act accordingly to raise awareness against discrimination of the girl child. Every household, neighbourhood, school, institution, the community should start gender sensitisation.

After some preliminary formalities of the house, the Chairman allowed women MPs to speak on international women’s day.

Congress Rajya Sabha member Ambika Soni spoke first and proposed that a resolution reiterating the commitment of all parties on the women’s reservation bill be moved. Renuka Choudhary quoted Mahatma Gandhi’s words ‘The day a woman can walk freely on the roads at night, that day we can say that India has achieved Independence.’ She went on to say that day had still not arrived in India. The Congress MP also said that the number of crimes against women had increased.

Rajani Patil of the Congress read out a poem of Amrita Pritam’s poem ‘वह कहता था, वह सुनती थी’. While elaborating the mood expressed in the poem she went on to say that women of the day should be given the right to speak out.

Sampatiya Uikey of the BJP said that she was proud of the fact that women were being represented in Panchayati Raj institutions. She thanked Madhya Pradesh CM for his resolve to award death penalty for molesters of minor girls. She highlighted rising enrollment of women in colleges after passing school. She thanked the PM for giving key portfolios to Sushma Swaraj and Nirmala Sitharaman.

Viplove Thakur of INC expressed regret that women were not represented in Rajya Sabha house panels and said that equality should start in the house. The Chairman responded by saying that he would take action on the matter.

Kanimozhi of the DMK said that women should be respected for what they are and not their role/sacrifice as mothers, sisters and daughters. The MP said that workplaces were not safe for women and their representation in jobs are low. She asked the government to pass the women’s reservation bill as soon as possible and assured the support of all parties for the bill.

Anu Aga, the nominated member remarked that she found it strange only women celebrate women’s day and men don’t celebrate a men’s day. Men have the opportunity and one-upmanship throughout the year, she said. The MP said, “I am not for this tokenism allowing women to speak, giving them the opportunity. If we look at India, if we look at the female foeticide which is on the rise. Safety of the women is not there. So I request all the men to stop throwing crumbs at us and this tokenism.” She demanded that opportunities and respect must be given throughout the year.

Rupa Ganguly of the BJP said that women were humans first and women next. She felt that women’s day does bring joy to her and especially to those who have not been empowered so far. She recalled an incident where she was admonished by other women for giving up her women’s seat on the bus for an old man. In a veiled reference to West Bengal, she said that a state where a woman is CM should not be seeing the largest number of crimes against women.

Sushma Swaraj remarked that all men in the house had supported the women’s reservation bill. She said that the day was an opportunity to thank women and address women’s issue. She felt that she was proud that many women CMs, a women president, a woman prime minister and party leaders had risen without reservation. She highlighted that BSF women biker team had participated in the Republic day. In spite of this progress, she said that women were being discriminated against. She concluded by saying that the women empowerment should become a social movement and not restricted to a government program.

The discussion involved participation of some male MPs including Ghulam Nabi Azad and Vijay Goyal. The Rajya Sabha held a fairly decent and largely apolitical discussion on women’s issues on the day.

Baloch Republican Party organises protest in Geneva against Pakistan sponsored atrocities

The Baloch Republican Party (BRP) had organized a protest in Geneva, Switzerland on Wednesday against the state-sponsored atrocities in Balochistan by Pakistan during the 37th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council.

The Switzerland division of the BRP also tweeted about the protest from their official handle.

The Pakistan Army has been committing a series of human rights violations in Balochistan for years. From mass killings to abduction, torture and then eventual murder, the province has witnessed unimaginable brutalities over the years. Pakistan has used weapons supplied to it by the US government to wage war against the Balochs.

Brahumdagh Bugti, the President of the Baloch Republican Party, has been raising the atrocities suffered by his people across several international forums. Bugti, whose grandfather Nawab Akbar Khan Bugti killed by the Pakistani Army in an encounter, has in the past demanded a referendum for the Baloch people under the supervision of the United Nations.

In his 2016 Independence Day Speech, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had spoken of the Balochs. A short while after the speech, Baloch freedom fighters had raised the Indian Tricolour in a rally in support of Prime Minister Modi.

‘Wasted 23 years of my life in Congress,’ says Himanta Biswa Sarma

The architect of the saffron surge in North-East India, Himanta Biswa Sarma, in an interview with Bloomberg Quint has stated that in hindsight he feels he has wasted 23 years of his life in the Congress Party.

In the interview, Sarma rubbished the Congress’s allegations of power grabbing by the BJP. He stated that Conrad Sangma’s party, NPP, secured 19 seats on its won in the recently conducted Meghalaya elections, just one less than the Congress and the BJP was only supporting his claim of forming the government. He further stated that it took him only 10 minutes to secure the alliance.

Himanta Biswa Sarma further stated that even during his time at the Congress, the state unit differed distinctly from the national organization of the party. He stated that the state unit constantly countered the “Muslim communal agenda” of Badruddin Ajmal.

Sarma also elaborated on the feudal mentality of the Nehru-Gandhi family. He vehemently asserted that the family believes in a master-servant relationship and behave as if they have descended from a different planet. He also advised the Congress party to look beyond the family if they are to survive complete political decimation at the hands of the BJP.

The former Congress member also highlighted the cultural differences between the two parties. According to him, the then President and Vice-President of the Congress Party always maintained a certain distance from the rest of the party workers. He stated that the leaders of the BJP are much more rooted in Indian culture than their Congress counterparts. He mentions how every party worker is heartily welcome at BJP President Amit Shah’s residence starkly in contrast with Sonia Gandhi of the Congress. He speaks of how everyone is welcome to dine and spend time at Amit Shah’s residence while workers of the Congress are not allowed at the Nehru-Gandhi family’s official residence beyond a certain point.

Bharatiya Janata Party’s fortunes have in the North East have turned 180 degrees ever since Himanta Biswa Sarma has joined the party. Himanta Biswa Sarma, who asserts he left Congress due to the complete lack of internal democracy in the party, has spearheaded the BJP’s rise in the North Eastern region of the country where the North Eastern Democratic Alliance headed by the BJP currently rules in 7 out of the 8 North-Eastern states.

Highway to jail: Kerala HC directs filing of criminal case against top Christian priest over shady land deals

Cardinal George Alencherry, the head of Syro-Malabar Catholic Church has found himself in big trouble after the Kerala High Court directed the police to file a criminal complaint against him and three others on Tuesday. But since then, he has incidentally found support in form of four bishops who are part of his Church’s permanent Synod.

This has also been backed by the Church’s spokesperson Jimmy Poochakkattu, who found nothing wrong in Synod’s intervention. As per him, the Cardinal is the head of the Synod hence he can seek its support.

The Kerala High Court on Tuesday had observed that a prima facie case indicated criminal conspiracy, breach of trust and criminal misappropriation when it comes to the said land deals. These observations were made while hearing a case filed by Shine Varghese a follower of the archdiocese.

Apart from Alencherry, the case is supposed to be filed against two priests Joshy Puthuva, Sebastian Vadakkumpadan and Saju Varghese Kunnel, a real estate broker involved in the land deals.

This case pertains to the Cardinal been accused of favouring a middleman who sold Church land worth 27 crores for a price of 13 crores. In spite of selling below its market value, the Church had received only 9.3 crores. In his defence, the Cardinal had claimed that the balance had remained unpaid due to demonetisation. In total, reports have speculated that the church has lost about 93 crores.

Earlier while the Kerala High Court was hearing the matter, the Cardinal had decided to brazen things out by claiming that only the Pope could punish him under Canon law. The High Court promptly retorted that the Pope had no jurisdiction in India.

During Tuesday’s hearing, Alencherry’s counsel had argued that he being the supreme authority of the diocese could do whatever he wanted with the property. The court though disagreed and asserted that the Cardinal is merely the custodian of the properties.

It isn’t the only time in recent days when the church came in support of those accused in serious matters. The infamous St. Joseph’s Hospice which has been accused of harvesting the bones and organs of the elderly had found a backer in the Catholic church and Tamil Nadu Bishops’ Council. After organised a protest against action on Hospices, they had also asked the priests to mobilise the parishioners in large numbers to participate in it.
