In defence of the reactionary ‘right’

0

After “We have failed to create an ecosystem”, the oft repeated peeve of social media right is “we have failed to build a narrative”. In the last 3 years I have attended a few meetings of like-minded individuals and most such get-togethers cannot progress for more than five minutes before someone says (usually with a skyward roll of eyes or a frustrated hands-thrown-in-air gesture or both) “bloody RW is always in reaction mode. When are we going to build our own narrative?”

In a recent event I attended, a journalist with a becoming haughtiness said “You (RW) have created superstars out of nobodies like (insert a student leader’s name here), when are you fools going to stop chasing the baits thrown at you and build your own narrative?” Ok, I might have spruced up the language a tad for dramatic effect, but the gist of the conversation was as above, namely, every time a left leaning or status quo-ist journalist, academician or intellectual makes a statement on social media that is designed to provoke the ‘right wing’, the ‘right wing’ happily obliges them by reacting.

Not only do I recognize the degree of truth in the above complaint, very recently I have been at the receiving end of considerable social media flak for politely pointing out to my fellow travellers that sometimes not reacting is the best way to be. However, like all theories in today’s highly polarized discourse, this too has been applied as an absolute by many, mainly by right leaning to centrist journalists with exposure to mainstream media and academicians/intellectuals that the fledgling right ecosystem has been able to produce. So I thought it would be refreshing to give an aspiring writer’s perspective on this reaction business.

To start with, one needs to understand the nature of social media as a confrontational medium and how provocateurs on both sides of the aisle have mastered the art of making instigative statements that are bound to invoke strong reactions. The left especially is adept at first deliberately provoking outrage and then claiming victimhood. So when a communist student leader, a self-proclaimed Indologist from USA or a mainstream journalist makes a provocative tweet, it is merely the opening move in a series of calculated escalations. So ignoring the first statement merely brings out more provocative statement.

The danger of such provocateurs getting mainstreamed, without being challenged, cannot be ignored either. Unlike the ‘right’, that has largely consigned its loonies to the fringe, the left worldwide has happily embraced extremists. The veneration a homophobic mass murderer like Che has received is an example. So the tweeple student leader of today will be the lit-fest speaker of tomorrow and the mainstream political leader of the day after. Mind you, engaging with them today is not going to stop this from happening. However, ignoring them today would allow them to develop their rhythm without interruptions and add followers from the neutral or fence-sitting category who would, in absence of contrary argument, take their narrative as the only one, especially as the decades old ecosystem of academicians, entertainers and intellectuals is endorsing it.

If ignoring hate-mongers would have consigned them to oblivion, then the left leaning ecosystem of the 60s and 70s would have never reached the position of primacy in our discourse that they reached today, as during the last quarter of 20th century these people were virtually unopposed.

One reason why more mainstream journalists don’t understand this reaction business is that there is a very important difference between career journalists or columnists who cut their teeth in the environment of conventional media, and many social media writers of today who started off in completely different fields but came to politics because they felt the way of life as they saw it, was under attack. So for a lot of us (I too belong to the latter category), reacting to a contrary opinion was how we started off. My first article carried by OpIndia was in reaction to a Sunday Times column by Aakar Patel. My first article to cross 10,000 shares was a rebuttal of journalist Ravish Kumar’s open letter to union minister M J Akbar. Over a period of time, I have learnt to resist the impulse of going after every contrary opinion expressed out there, but the fact remains that it was the act of reacting that taught me how to construct an argument. I am sure a lot of writers who grew up in social media age would share my experience.

In my experience, there is a tendency to have an ‘all in or all out’ view when it comes to building the so-called narrative. While it is true that every movement requires original thinkers, philosophers and policy wonks for it to remain relevant over a period of time, from time to time it also needs people who act as hammers in search of nails. Sure, those people should never become the leading lights of the movement (example Breitbart and Trump administration) but the hammers form a protective layer around the thinkers of their side so that they can continue their work without having to deal with the obnoxious trolls from the other side. I am going to get into a lot of trouble for saying this but there is a certain amount of nobility in keeping aside your personal distaste for engaging with offensive people for the sake of the cause you serve.

So if it is a case of ‘all in or all out’, are there improvements that the right can do to its reactions? In my opinion, moderating the vehemence of reactions against people largely on your own side but in disagreement on a particular issue is one low hanging fruit. There is also a tendency of commenting upon non-political or politically neutral communication because you don’t agree with the politics of the person. This is largely counter-productive and allows the other side to build the ‘vicious intimidating troll machine of the right’ narrative. In my opinion that should be avoided too.

I would be remiss if I don’t mention to my friends that your advice of ‘not reacting’ does sound alike the adage of ‘do as I say not as I do’ because most of you have been around longer than us and there is precious little narrative we see built around us. So isn’t there a small possibility that we are not a whole lot of different in strategy and have only difference of opinion as to what topics are worth reacting to?

There is one more reason why this ‘build your own narrative’ doesn’t sound like a very practical advice to me. It is the same reason why I don’t agree with filmmakers when they say ‘if you think a film is lying about history, make your own film showing the correct one’. Both these statements assume a level playing field where both sides are on an equal footing. That is far from the truth.

The communication channels are dominated by one side, the distribution is cartelized in the hands of one side and the centres of academic and intellectual discourse are ruled with an iron-fist by one side. In war parlance, this is the enemy occupying elevated position. Building own narrative is not going to work for those below as long as the elevated position would allow the enemy to destroy them. In that context, going after the enemy’s guns might sound like a suicidal pursuit but ultimately if there is one tactic that even has a chance of win, it lies in destroying the guns occupying the elevated position.

There is an old saying that there are two times your enemies will attack you – one is when they are ready, and the other when you are not. If you consider yourself as a soldier defending a lonely outpost in this civilizational battle, you have to acknowledge that we don’t choose our battles, our battles choose us and sometimes not engaging an enemy is the same as surrendering the post.

We shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender.

You know who said this? Winston Churchill. Mr Churchill knew a thing or two about defending a tiny island under attack from a highly motivated and powerful enemy. Please note, nowhere in his rousing speech does Mr. Churchill say ‘we shall fight them at a time and place of our own choosing’.

I rest my case! Jai Hind!

Congress leader Ahmed Patel and his son under ED scanner in a money laundering case

0

In what might signal trouble for senior Congress leader Ahmed Patel, he and his close family members have come under Enforcement Directorate (ED) scanner, in connection with a money laundering case. Apart from Patel, his son Faisal Patel and son-in-law Irfan Siddiqui, have been flagged by the ED.

This scrutiny comes in connection with a money laundering case which involves the Sandesara Group of companies. This Sandesara group is alleged to have been involved in high value suspicious transactions which amount to as much as Rs 5,383 crore.

We had recently reported that the Enforcement Directorate (ED), in connection with this case, raided the houses and premises of Sanjay Mahajan, who is believed to be a close aid of senior Congress leader and Sonia Gandhi’s close aide: Ahmed Patel.

Now it turns out that Sunil Yadav, an employee with the Sandesara Group, has alleged that huge sums of money were handed over to Ahmed Patel’s son-in-law by Chetan Sandesara, the owner of the Sandesara group and his associate Gagan Dhavan.

It has been alleged that Sandesara and Dhavan used to hand over huge sums of cash ranging from Rs 15 to Rs 25 lakh to Ahmed’s son-in-law, and Yadav claimed that he himself accompanied Sandesara 4-5 times while the latter went to visit Siddiqui’s residence.

Yadav has also alleged that cash was handed over to the chauffeur of Ahmed Patel’s son. This cash was supposed to eventually make way to Faisal (Ahmed Patel’s son), on behalf of Chetan Sandesara. As per Yadav, he was called by Sandesara to deliver Rs 5 lakh for Faisal Patel, he as a result allegedly contacted and delivered the cash to Faisal’s chauffeur.

Yadav has also gone on to allege that Sandesara used to regularly frequent Ahmed Patel’s residence in New Delhi, and used to code word it as “Headquarter 23”. Apart from that, Irfan Siddiqui and Faisal Patel used to be refereed to as J2 and J1 respectively.

This written statement by Yadav has been made under Section 50 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, as a result of which it is admissible as evidence in a court of law.

The Congress has tried to defend Patel by alleging that Yadav’s statement was recorded under coercion, and that the whole affair was a witch hunt to malign the Patel family.

Such news about a senior Congress leader in scrutiny comes after it was reported that, the ED arrested two people in connection with the Bikaner land scam case, involving Sonia Gandhi’s son-in-law Robert Vadra. These arrests were made under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act.

Myths about Triple Talaq Bill busted

0

In a historic move, the Lok Sabha yesterday passed a bill criminalising triple talaq even as some in the opposition demanded changes in the bill. While it was relatively smooth sailing in the Lok Sabha, the Rajya Sabha may provide a sterner test since the ruling party BJP does not have a majority on its own in the upper house. In the lower house, besides some bizarre arguments, most of the lawmakers supported the bill:

Even so, via social media, and TV debates, some myths about the bill are being spread. This is an attempt to address those myths:

1. Myth: Banning Triple Talaq is anti-Islamic

Fact: In non-secular countries like Alegria, Pakistan, Bangladesh, UAE, where Islam is the official religion, Triple Talaq has been de-recognised by the local law, years ago. Further, Arab states like Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia and Yemen along with southeast Asian countries like Indonesia, Malaysia and Philippines have also enacted laws against the muslim divorce practice.

2. Myth: Criminalising Triple Talaq is too harsh

Fact: We dont have to move too far. Two of India’s neighboring countries, both Islamic republics, Pakistan and Bangladesh have a law in place which states that anyone violating the law (which outlaws triple talaq), can face imprisonment which may extend upto 1 year.

3. Myth: The bill was passed without consulting the community.

This claim was even made by senior lawyers like Indira Jaisingh:

Fact: Way back in October 2016 the Law Commission had issed a detailed questionnarie on the issue of Uniform Civil Code as well Triple Talaq, asking for comments from the public at large, including the stakeholders of the Muslim community. It asked whether the practice of triple talaq be abolished, retained or retained with suitable amendments.

4. Myth: There is no mechanism for compensation to the wife

Fact: The bill in itself is very short and it is surprising how this claim is being made. The bill has a clear provision, which allows for a subsistence allowance:

India successfully test fires its indigenously developed supersonic interceptor missile

0

An indigenously developed Advanced Air Defence (AAD), supersonic interceptor missile, was successfully tested by India on Thursday. This interceptor missile was test fired from a defence test facility in Abdul Kalam island present in Bay of Bengal. This missile is capable of destroying any low altitude incoming ballistic missile.

The test was considered successful when the missile successfully intercepted an incoming ballistic missile target, within a 30 KM altitude of the earth’s atmosphere. The interceptor missile embarked upon its trajectory to destroy the ballistic missile, after it received signals via its tracking radars.

The 7.5 metre long interceptor is a long single stage solid rocket propelled guided missile, which is equipped with a navigation system, hi-tech computer and an electro-mechanical activator. It also contains a mobile launcher, secure data link for interception, sophisticated radars and has independent tracking, homing capabilities.

This was a third such test conducted in 2017 in this regard, with two others being conducted on 11th February and 1st March respectively. All these tests are being carried out in order to develop a full-fledged multi-layer Ballistic Missile Defence system.

Looking back, 2017 might be termed as a successful year when it comes to India strengthening its indigenous defence capabilities.

We had reported how India had started the process of building six nuclear submarines to significantly increase the Navy’s strike capabilities in the face of China’s growing belligerence in the Indo-pacific region. This came after, in 2016 India commissioned INS Arihant as its first indigenious nuclear powered submarine.

It was also reported how DRDO too is making very impressive strides in defence production after it developed India’s first unmanned remotely operated tank. The tank named Muntra was rolled out of DRDO’s Chennai lab.

This tank can chiefly be used in three ways that are surveillance, mine detection and reconnaissance. It can also operate in areas which have nuclear and bio hazards.

Apart from these tanks, the DRDO also showcased some other cutting edge equipment it has developed. The inventions include a handheld wall penetration radar which when placed on a wall would be able to project the presence of people on the other side of it, helmet-mounted night vision, nano-driven thermal and electromagnetic protection which acts as a shield against electromagnetic attack to name a few.

Congress MP Sonia Gandhi vacations in Goa as Triple Talaq bill tabled in the Parliament

0

Sonia Gandhi, who recently handed over the reigns of Congress to her son Rahul Gandhi, seems to have taken over the vacationing mantle from her son, who has famously missed parliament sessions for his international vacations. Former Congress President Sonia Gandhi was spotted vacationing in Goa while key bills are to be tabled during the winter session of the Parliament.

Sonia Gandhi was missing while the bill seeking to criminalise the practice of instant triple talaq was introduced in the Lok Sabha.

While many journalists were pleased to see Gandhi take a break, many viewers claimed that her absence during the vital triple talaq debate (an issue concerning countless women), could have been avoided, considering she is one of the most prominent women politicians of the country.

Other Twitter users also pointed out how Gandhi is missing out various important women centric bills which are scheduled to be tabled in the Parliament.

The picture of Gandhi on a bicycle was posted by actor Riteish Deshmukh.

Riteish Deshmukh’s father, Vilasrao Deshmukh was a Congress leader and the Chief Minister of Maharashtra.

CPM goons in Kerala caught on camera threatening to chop RSS workers into pieces

0

In what might be called a blatant show of bloodthirsty belligerence, CPM workers from Kerala’s Kannur district have been caught on camera making highly provocative statements against RSS and BJP personnel of the region.

As reported by Times Now, the CMP workers were heard chanting that, “We will ransack their homes and kill”, “We have a leadership…if it says just one word we will kill RSS leader Valsan Thillenkery”:

They are further heard threatening that they won’t spare a single man in RSS, enter their homes and chop them into pieces. The video ends with the CPM workers chanting Inqlab Zindabad.

These slogans, as per reports, were raised on 26th December. The region of Kannur has reportedly been engulfed in violence for the past 10 days, which has resulted in 7 confrontations, where 6 RSS workers and 5 CPM workers have been injured.

Reports about this video have surfaced at a time when CPM and BJP leaders seem to have agreed to take concrete steps for bringing peace to the Kannur district. The measures include, leaders of both the parties refraining from making provocative speeches against their political rivals. Plus the party workers too have been asked to refrain from making inflammatory statements or comments on social media which may lead to tension or violence.

It remains to be seen whether the parties indeed pay heed to such an advisory, which might prevent such sloganeering against RSS workers and leaders in the future.

We have time and again reported how communists have turned the state into killing fields with at least 14 RSS workers getting killed in the state from July 2016 to August 2017. The killings have been so rampant, that they have even stretched to the hometown of current Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, who it is alleged, has supported such killings in the past.

RSS leaders have also alleged that the communists get the support of Muslim fundamentalists in the state, which helped them cobble a majority in the last assembly elections.

While the opposition bickers over the bill, man gives triple talaq to wife because she overslept

0

On Thursday, Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad introduced the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill 2017, which criminalises the instant triple talaq practice. Even though this bill seeks to emancipate the Muslim women from being exploited by their husbands, it was met with resistance by AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi who claimed that the bill violated fundamental rights and lacked legal coherence.

Earlier in the day, Congress leader Salman Khurshid had created a sob story in order to defend the practice of triple talaq, and was ridiculed as a result.

But while opposition politicians are bickering over the bill and practice itself, Muslim women continue to suffer at the hands of this draconian practice.

It has been reported that a man has given triple talaq to his wife, simply because she overslept and got up late in the morning. The girl named Gul Afsha was later thrown out of the house. This incident has been reported from the Nagaliya Aqil village in Uttar Pradesh’s Rampur district.

As per local reports, her husband first slapped her on the cheek and then gave her triple talaq following which he threw her out of her home and locked their house. She then as per the report, she went to the police station but her community members took her away by explaining that being a domestic matter it will be settled between the two parties.

The police station in charge, when asked about this matter claimed that Afsha had indeed come to the station to inform about the matter, but she didn’t want to file any case.

Afsha’s barely four months old marriage with Qasim, a truck driver, soured within months after he started assaulting her. Turns out that the husband and wife had a heated row on Monday night and Qasim proceeded to brutally beat her.

As a result of this beating, Afsha couldn’t properly sleep at night, and woke up late on Tuesday morning. This too angered Qasim, who then proceeded to give her triple talaq.

The girl as a result of this torture, has now taken refuge in her parent’s home. Her family members are in a state of shock due to the matter, and even Afsha continues to be very stressed.

Even though the practice of triple talaq has been outlawed by the Supreme Court, it hasn’t stopped Muslim men from giving instant talaq to their wives, over the most frivolous of reasons.

We had reported how a husband had given triple talaq to his wife after she tried to stop him from forcibly selling her land. In another case, a husband was accused of assaulting and giving triple talaq to his wife after she took food for her relative in hospital.

In one of the cases the local police had expressed a lack of knowledge regarding the course of action in such matters, as he claimed that they hadn’t yet received any instructions as to how they should proceed with the investigation.

This issue might be fixed the moment there’s a concrete law which criminalises the Islamic practice, thereby providing a clear road map for the law authorities to act in these matters.

AAP slammed for turning Kejriwal’s ‘metro invitation snub’ into an opportunity to seek donations

0

A few days ago, the Aam Aadmi Party had gone into outrage mode, after their supremo Arvind Kejriwal was not invited to the inauguration of Delhi metro’s Magenta line on Monday. This Delhi metro stretch from Kalkaji Mandir and Botanical Garden was inaugurated by PM Modi, and UP CM Yogi Adityanath too was present during the ceremony.

Deputy CM Sisodiya has since then called this invitation snub of Kejriwal as an insult to Delhites, and alleged that he (Kejriwal) wasn’t invited out of fear that he might publicly demand a rollback of metro price hike.

Since then the party has spun this whole ‘metro invitation snub’ into a potential donation drive by asking people to donate to the party if they were angry against Kejriwal’s invitation snub:

It was certainly amusing to note that the party decided to milk a slight to Kejriwal’s personal ego by asking people to enrich their treasury.

People too took noted the same and bemusedly slammed the party:

A few decided to crack jokes:

Now one wonders whether AAP’s renewed spur to take money from people, would also translate into making its donation process more transparent by reinstating the public list of donors, which it inexplicably decided to pull down from its website in June, 2016.

This famous twitter user has made exposing Rajdeep Sardesai’s hypocrisy an art form

0

When one paints a mental picture of a journalist, there are various qualities associated with the “ideal journalist” which come to the mind. They being, objectivity, integrity, tenacity, being outgoing, to name a few.

But when one pictures controversial journalist Rajdeep Sardesai, it seems that the quality which comes to the forefront, above everything else, is hypocrisy. And in order to prove so, scientist and well known columnist Anand Ranganathan has dedicated a whole thread to expose Rajdeep and his hypocrisy.

Going by Anand Ranganathan’s thread, the instances of Rajdeep’s hypocrisy may be so vast even a book might be written on the whole affair, but here are the choicest few which put Rajdeep in the dock to say the least.

Ranganathan who ‘fondly’ calls Rajdeep Michelangelo, had once famously exclaimed that, “if Hypocrisy were an art form, this man would be Michelangelo”, thanks to this:

But Sardesai wasn’t really concerned about, “Television ‘Respect’ Points” in the past:

And as Ranganathan described, Like clockwork, here comes Michelangelo of Hypocrisy brandishing his chisel. The Renaissance Man of Indian Journalism. Here’s another gem:

Rajdeep once proclaimed that, channels shouldn’t carry sponsored content of Godmen:

And again, almost like clockwork, Ranganathan was on Rajdeep’s case and uncovered that, IBN7 the channel where Rajdeep used to be the Editor-in-chief, used to run Nirmal baba episodes three times a day, everyday:

Rajdeep once let everyone know on twitter that, he wasn’t too fond of bullet trains:

But Ranganathan wasn’t letting him get away with that lie and uncovered this:

Rajdeep one day decided that India should become a mature nation and not mention Pakistan in UN speeches:

You won’t be surprised with which screenshots Ranganathan put up next:

Rajdeep once said, Indians should be citizens first and disregard ideology:

You can guess what Ranganathan did next:

Does Rajdeep like crackers or does he not like them?

Rajdeep wants the son to pay for his father’s sin but he doesn’t want a father to pay for his son’s sins. Interesting:

Religion shouldn’t matter in politics. Wait, religion does matter in politics:

The same goes with Caste:

All this makes one wonder as to why does Rajdeep not simply play smart and delete the contradictory tweets before tweeting out a viewpoint, after he has been repeatedly exposed so many times for his hypocrisy. But the fact remains that there’s only so much which you can cover-up, and Anand Ranganathan would be there, lurking around, waiting to pounce upon Rajdeep’s next folly.

Salman Khurshid conjures up a sob story to defend Triple Talaq, gets ridiculed

0

On Congress Foundation Day, one of the patron saints of liberal values, Salman Khurshid defended Triple Talaq giving one of the most feeble excuses ever, “who will take care of the family if the man who gives Triple Talaq is jailed for the same”?

This, of course, got twitterati riled up over the regressive, vote bank pleasing statement.

Some even thought it would be a good idea for Khurshid’s wife to give some basic lessons of decency to her husband.

One wonders whether the newly crowned Congress President Rahul Gandhi endorses these statements.
