FIR filed against NCW member for taking suicide case diary in rape case

0

A case has been registered against National Commission for Women member Sushma Sahu for allegedly taking away original documents related to Bolpur rape case from the investigating officers and threatening them with dire consequences. Last week, a 20 year old girl set herself ablaze in Bolpur, West Bengal, after being allegedly raped by a construction worker. The accused Sheikh Hafijul, who is a mason by profession, allegedly took photos of the victim and used them to blackmail and rape her. Unable to bear the trauma, the girl set herself ablaze on December 12 and succumbed to her injuries after 10 days.

As per reports, Sahu had visited the house of the victim and later asked the police to give her a photocopy of the case documents. As the police officer asked for some time to get the photocopy done, Sahu allegedly took off with the original documents, asking the investigating officer to collect them from her later.

Investigating officer, Sub-inspector Subir Chakraborty, further said that Sahu even threatened to throw away his uniform and threatened him with dire consequences.

Following this, a case has been registered against Sahu under IPC sections 379 (commitment of theft), 186 (obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 355 (assault or criminal force with intent to dishonour person) and 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation).

Police arrest 12 Maoists accused of killing 11 tribals after branding them as police informants

0

In a major breakthrough, the police in Odisha’s Malkangiri district have arrested 12 Maoists accused of killing 11 tribals, who they branded as police informants, a charge which the police have denied.

In 2017, the Malkangiri district has witnessed the deaths of 11 tribal, the latest being on 19th December, when a tribal farmer named Sadhu Khemundu was battered to death in the region by Maoists.

As per Jagmohan Meena, the SP of the region, after the killings, the police had intensified combing operations in Maoist infested areas of Kalimela, Tulsi and Nakakamudi in the district. As a result of which, they managed to arrest these 12 Maoists from their jungle dens or houses.

Meena described the Maoists as “hardcore militants” and claimed that the police was verifying whether they were involved in other cases as well.

Such a success comes a few months after as many as 18 Maoists were killed in a joint counter-insurgency operation in Tondamarka area of Sukma district of Chhattisgarh. The counter-insurgency operation named ‘Prahaar’ was conducted by Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA) and Special Task Force (STF) of Chhattisgarh Police and District Reserve Guard (DRG) of Chhattisgarh.

This practice of Maoists murdering civilians after branding them as informants, has been an almost regular affair over the years.

To named a few:

In 2016 it was reported that a man named Sanjeet Kumar Rathod from Sukma district in Chhattisgarh, was killed by left wing extremists over charges of him being a police informant. After his murder, the Maoists’ Jagargunda area committee issued a statement claiming that the deceased continued to provide the party’s information to the police despite being warned.

In 2014 too, Maoists had killed a headman of a tribal village in Koraput district of Odisha over similar charges of him being a police informant, though the police denied such a connection.

In the age of digitisation, Delhi CM Kejriwal bats for lengthy documentation for public services

0

At a time when offices are going paperless and even governance is going digital, boosting the Digital India call, AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal wants to go back in time. A proposal sent to the lieutenant governor (LG), Anil Baijal, to bring doorstep delivery of already digitized public services, has been sent back for reconsideration citing safety concerns. A press release by the LG office, said that the doorstep delivery proposal had safety implications for women and senior citizens, possible increase in corruption, bad behaviour, breach of privacy and loss of documents amongst other things.

While the privacy concerns are valid, the Aam Aadmi Party today attacked the LG saying that since the LG is not an elected representative, unlike Chief Minister himself, shouldn’t Kejriwal have the final word.

Many voiced their concerns regarding the possibility of increase in corruption by the individuals who may come to verify documents.

AAP rebel leader, Kapil Mishra, too voiced his concerns regarding the human intervention.

He also said that this scheme proposed by Kejriwal would dilute and make the Service Guarantee Act irrelevant because service delivery would no longer be the responsibility of the Government officer.

Meanwhile, AAP warriors on Twitter came out in full force asking why should LG, who is not an elected representative, have a final say and not Delhi CM.

However, some pointed out how this step could turn out to be an expensive one on the pockets of Delhi residents.

Considering the implications of human intervention, perhaps it is a good time for Kejriwal to be answerable for once on why he wants to go back in time when the world is moving forward.

Tharoor, Hegde and the Constitution

0

Union minister of state Anantkumar Hegde’s remarks that “BJP had come to power to change the Constitution” and that it would “do so in the near future” made Shashi Tharoor quote RSS ideologues and their supposed hostility to the Indian Constitution. Shekhar Gupta, on whose website the article appeared yesterday, tweeted that ‘the cat is out of the bag.” These two oily characters, both literally and figuratively, have often been annoying with their selective truths.

Tharoor threshes out quotes from the works of former RSS supremo M.S. Golwalkar and Deen Dayal Upadhyay, to show their disapproval of Indian Constitution. The insinuation is that our holy grail, the Indian Constitution, is not safe under the present dispensation of BJP and its fountainhead, RSS.

Only if Tharoor could explain to us why in their decade-long years in government (1998-2004 and 2014 onwards), BJP has made no amendment whatsoever on the religious statutes of the Constitution? Surely, if this is their hidden agenda, they would’ve made a move to change the status-quo.

If Tharoor could explain to us why a political party with the so-called “Hindutva” agenda is seen as a pro-Capitalist party, swearing by “development” and being no activist, unfortunately, on the issues of cultural heritage? Or why all the BJP election manifestos since 1980 have asserted the right of legal equality regardless of religion? Perhaps Mr. Tharoor could answer why the introduction of a Uniform Civil Code would be such a bad thing to do, considering secularism should in essence mean equality under law?

While considering the Constitution as sacrosanct, maybe Mr. Tharoor should also explain why amendment in Article 30 is not desirable which allows minorities to set up schools, have religion-centric curriculum and get Government funds to boot while denying the same to Hindu majority? Or for that matter Article 25 which allows “propagation” of one’s religion, knowing fully well that Hinduism doesn’t have a tradition of proselytization while Islam and Christianity do. As Dr. Koenraad Elst says: “It’s like giving wolves and sheep the equal liberty to eat each other”. (Dr Koenraad Elst, Decolonizing the Hindu Mind, Page 230)

I wonder if Mr. Tharoor can explain why Article 370 must not be amended which doesn’t allow non-Kashmiri Indians from acquiring property and citizenship in Jammu and Kashmir state? Why such a measure, conceived and executed with the understanding that it was only temporary, be allowed to continue to damage the fabric of one nation? Or if the constitution is the paramount beacon of equality, why under Article 26 Hindus do not have the fundamental right to maintain institutions for religious or charitable purposes, as interpreted by the Supreme Court (Shri Adi Vishveshvara of the Kashi Vishvanath temple vs Uttar Pradesh case, Dr Koenraad Elst, Decolonizing the Hindu Mind, Page 241). Why Christians and Muslims can manage their own place of worship but the Hindus’ religious institutions have been taken-over by the state governments?

What about the discrimination against Hindus while Minorities Finance Corporation are functional in almost all the states of India? Or the 1992 Minorities Commission Act in a nation which is avowedly secular? Or the Hindu Code Bill while personal laws of a minority can’t be amended without their approval or initiative? Why religion-based personal laws which continue to flout the Article 44 of the Constitution which is for Uniform Civil Code?

In passing, let me also throw a Golwalkar quote to sober up Tharoor on his hysteria: “Let the Muslims evolve their own laws. I will be happy when they arrive at the conclusion that polygamy is not good for them, but I would not like to force my views on them,” said Golwalkar (Andersen and Damle: Brotherhood in Saffron, Page 83)

It is surprising, that critics like Tharoor can only go back to Gowalkar and Deen Dayal Upadhyay, every time they wish to critique the current dispensation. It is indeed amusing that he can’t find any other stick to beat the BJP and RSS with. And since they can’t, shouldn’t they for a moment concede that the current government concerns itself with ‘sabka saath sabka vikaas’, sometimes, much to the anguish of some of his own supporters?

Tharoor won’t tell that Golwalkar was a spiritual leader—who almost became a Shankaracharya—and was completely anti-political. Golwalkar never warmed up to Hindu Mahasabha’s political goals. As for Deen Dayal Upadhyay, Tharoor would’ve done well to point out the merit of former’s “Integral Humanism” which is BJP’s core philosophy.

Wish Tharoor someday would write and Gupta would publish the former’s views on 42nd Amendment which inserted the word “secular” in the Constitution when all the opposition was in jail and it’s clearance in Parliament was no better than a joke on democracy.

Samajwadi Party leader slammed for condoning Pakistan’s inhuman treatment of Kulbhushan Jadhav and kin

0

On Tuesday it was reported how Pakistan had meted out an inhuman treatment to Kulbhushan Jadhav’s wife and mother while they tried to meet their kin, who is confined by Pakistan over allegations of him being an Indian spy. The Ministry of External Affairs in a press release detailed the inhuman treatment of Jadhav’s family members which included asking them to remove their bindi, sindoor and bangles.

As a result of this, many Indians were outraged by Pakistan’s antics, but appears Samajwadi Party leader Naresh Agarwal was not one of them. Agarwal today stirred up a major controversy by condoning the inhuman treatment which was meted out to Jadhav and his kin by Pakistan:

In the ANI video, Agarwal when asked about the insult meted out to Kulbhushan Jadhav’s family, is heard saying that it is an internal policy matter of Pakistan. He further claimed that if Pakistan considers Jadhav to be a terrorist then they can treat him accordingly, and India should also treat terrorists in a similar way.

Such a statement about an Indian citizen, who by various accounts has been framed by Pakistan, angered a lot of people:

Even political leaders slammed Naresh Agarwal’s statement:

Naresh Agarwal in the past too has managed to create a controversy via his outspoken demeanour.

It was reported how he had in July linked various Hindu gods and goddesses like Lord Ram and Lord Hanuman with alcohol. He was also alleged to be involved in a sex racket and had condoned Shiv Sena MP Ravindra Gaikwad’s assault of Air India official. During the run up to the Lok Sabha he had stated that a tea seller could never become a good Prime Minister.

Congress CM Siddaramaiah and other party leaders slammed for attending lavish dinner costing Rs 10 lakh

0

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and 24 other congress leaders of the state have come under scrutiny for attending a Rs 10 lakh VVIP dinner organised by their fellow minister.

As reported by Times Now, this incident happened on 16th December, in a public meeting during the Karnataka assembly election campaign. This meal, as per the report, was served on silver plates and was cooked by a chef called from Hyderabad. It was reported that about 500 Congress personnel had access to that meal.

In a sharp contrast, the common party workers who were also present at that public meeting were served low quality and unhygienic food which allegedly was infested with worms.

Possibly sensing an opportunity, the BJP has come out to allege an anti-poor attitude of the congress. The Congress party in its defence has claimed that the plates merely ‘looked like silver’ and that the meal wasn’t a lavish one.

In the past too, Siddaramaiah has been accused of living a VVIP lifestyle at the cost of common people.

It was reported how on at-least two instances [1][2] the police had stopped ambulances in order to let Siddaramaiah’s convoy pass. In one of the instances, a critical patient was on board. After the media and the public started to create a furore over such instances, reports claimed that Siddaramaiah had allowed an ambulance to overtake his convoy. This though wasn’t before him boasting about it on twitter, for which he again was slammed by people.

We had also reported how Congress leader Ramesh Jharkholi, the Small-scale Industry Minister of Karnataka had been in the limelight for organising a lavish wedding of his son.

The wedding had a whopping 1.5 lakh guests in an air-conditioned mandap. A helipad was built for VVIP guests. The day of the wedding clashed with that of a debate in the assembly on an important debate about the drought situation in Karnataka, but the former got the higher priority with many Congress MLA’s skipping assembly for the wedding.

Modi Government to punish IAS officers if they fail to declare their assets before 31st January

0

The Modi government has instructed all the IAS officers to declare their assets which includes income and property details, failing which they would be denied vigilance clearances which is necessary for promotions and foreign postings.

This has been conveyed in a letter sent by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) to the states, Central government departments and union territories, asking them to ensure that the IAS officers submit their Immovable Property Returns (IPRs) before 31st January, 2018.

The DoPT in its instructions dated 4th April, 2011, had stated that vigilance clearance will be denied in case of non submission of IPRs and as per a DoPT official, those who don’t submit property details on time won’t be considered for any Central government posts, including foreign postings.

In order to help these IAS officials file these returns, an online module has been designed where these officers can upload a copy of their returns.

As per latest data, there are about 5,004 IAS officers in the country and as reported, about 1,856 IAS officers had failed to submit their returns for 2016.

Out of these 1,856, IAS officers from Uttar Pradesh ranked number one in not submitting their returns, totalling at about 255. Apart from this, 153 officers from Rajasthan, 118 from Madhya Pradesh, 109 from West Bengal and 104 from Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram-Union Territories (AGMUT) cadre failed to file their returns.

In 2014 and 2015 the figure of non-return filing IAS officers stood at about 1,527 and 1,537 respectively.

Apart from filing such returns. the IAS officers also have to take permission before accepting gifts above Rs 5,000. They also have to inform the government, in case they accept gifts from family and friends exceeding Rs 25,000.

We had recently reported how 12 out of 25 Supreme Court judges too had failed to make their financial assets public. 8 years ago, the Supreme Court had passed a resolution which called for such a measure.

Such a disclosure though wasn’t made mandatory, which might be one of the reasons why the judicial luminaries had decided not to comply with this exercise.

Journalist tries to instigate slum dwellers to protest, Mumbai Police files a case

0

A case has been registered by Bandra-Kurla Police in Mumbai against a freelance journalist and four others for allegedly obstructing a demolition drive carried out by the BMC. The incident occurred when the BMC was carrying out a demolition drive where a protestor allegedly manhandled a woman police constable. According to reports, the slum dwellers started protesting where journalist Priyanka Borpujari also joined in, during which a woman protestor even allegedly bit a police constable.

As per reports, police said that the police personnel were on bandobast duty while the civic authority (BMC) was clearing the slums. That was when the journalist protested along with the slum dwellers. Police claims that they initially requested Borpujari to not obstruct work, but she did not comply with the request.

An offence has been registered against Borpujari and her four colleagues at the BKC Police Station and probe in underway. Meanwhile, Borpujari and other journalists took to the microblogging site Twitter to voice their anger against the police action. According to her colleague at The Hindu, she was not commissioned to work on the demolition story, but was contemplating to pitch it to them. It was also claimed that she was detained and ill-treated because she had video of police personnel manhandling the slum dwellers on her mobile phone.

Borpujari has also written for other left leaning propaganda websites like Scroll and The Wire. Borpujari has been booked under section 353 of the Indian Penal Code on charges of assaulting or using criminal force to deter a public servant from discharging his duty. It is a bailable offence with imprisonment extending up to two years.

Has Rahul Gandhi again aped a stunt from Canadian PM Justin Trudeau’s PR strategy?

0

They say imitation is the best form of flattery. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau seems to have found a fan in Congress President Rahul Gandhi who has recently been on an image makeover overdrive. Earlier, we had reported how there has been an uncanny similarity between Trudeau and Gandhi’s PR initiatives after the new social media team of Gandhi took over earlier this year, from martial arts to artificial intelligence.

Yesterday, a Twitter user @WordOfTheFree pointed out a similarity between the PR stunt pulled off by Gandhi, where he wished a 107 year old lady on her birthday.

One Twitter user Dipali Sikand tweeted her grandmother’s wish on her 107th birthday to meet Rahul Gandhi

Gandhi wished his best to the lady, sending across a ‘big hug’.

That’s not all, Gandhi then even called up the lady to wish her on her birthday.

Surely it is a coincidence that Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also had a 120 year old Quebec woman wishing to meet him for her birthday. While Trudeau has not yet responded to the request, it appears Rahul Gandhi has gone one step further.

Meanwhile, little bit of looking around Dipali Sikand’s account revealed that the handle (these days on the Internet, one can never be sure whether the person handling a Twitter account is an actual person or a PR team) regularly indulges in paid hashtag trends of the Congress.

Whether or not there is a direct inspiration is something only the PR handlers can say, but similarities are rather too stark. Almost like Trump and Kejriwal.

BJP spokesperson files complaint against editor of AAP leaning media outfit

0

BJP Delhi spokesperson Tajinder Bagga has filed a complaint against Rifat Jawaid, editor of AAP propaganda website Janta Ka Reporter, accusing Jawaid of posting a derogatory, concocted and defamatory tweet against Bagga. In a tweet posted on 23rd December, Jawaid called Bagga ‘molester and illiterate troll’

Jawaid was responding to a tweet by Bagga where Bagga was mocking Jawaid as Janta Ka Reporter, the pro AAP website, had tweeted that Lalu Prasad Yadav, who was convicted in the fodder scam, was acquitted.

Bagga had mocked Jawaid for being in a rush to acquit Lalu.

This led to Jawaid losing all sense of public decorum and took personal potshots at Bagga and called him a ‘roadside and illiterate troll’.

Following this altercation, Bagga asked whether Jawaid would use such derogatory terms for his father for pointing out his mistakes. Jawaid, in return, stood by his words and said that he would henceforth refer to Bagga as a molester and a criminal.

Accusing Jawaid of tarnishing his image, Bagga filed a complaint to Delhi Police Cyber Cell against Jawaid to file an FIR (first information report). In the complaint, Bagga has also stated that he, though his lawyer Alakh Alok Srivastav, is in process of filing a civil and criminal defamation case against Jawaid.

The civil and criminal case will be filed against Jawaid at Patiala House Court on 2nd January, 2018 when the courts reopen after vacation.
