30 Students from IIT Madras join Sri Sri’s ‘Art of Living’ in cleaning 423 water bodies in Chennai

0

Chennai is a place which is affected by droughts in summers and heavy rain falls during monsoon. It is also riddled with rapid urbanization, encroachments, pollution, silting and contracting and dying water bodies. Unfortunately, despite nature’s gift to the city, the water bodies have been poorly maintained.

Led by Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, founder of The Art of Living, volunteers have come together to clean and revive 423 water bodies in Chennai and surrounding areas including 145 corporation water bodies, 39 Temple tanks under the Hindu Religious Endowment Board and other remaining water bodies in Chennai under the ‘Namma Ooru Namma Kulam’ (Our Town Our Pond). We are told that the necessary permissions were taken by the volunteers and teachers.

As part of the initiative, 30 students from IIT Madras joined the initiative to clean the Karappakam pond, Perungudi lake and Periya Keni Kulam. More than five ton of garbage was removed from the pond by the volunteers.

Aman Verma, student from IIT Madras said

“We aim to create at least a year-long campaign. We are looking to continue the work of cleaning the water bodies of our city which was long due.”

Along with physical cleaning, chemical free treatment with bio enzymes was carried out to improve the overall water quality of the pond. Along with the cleaning, an awareness campaign was held to motivate people to take up the responsibility for cleaner ponds. Disease control and reducing the ground water pollution were the resulting benefits of pond cleaning, according to the volunteers. This project seems to have motivated the youth towards these drives taking place in the city and students from many other prestigious colleges and institutions are joining hands with the organisation in this initiative.

Pond conservation troops have been formed that aim to maintain the cleanliness of the city’s ponds. Their aim is to arrest the use of ponds as dumping grounds and create more awareness among the citizenry.

‘Namma Ooru Namma kulam’ seems to be taking a holistic approach since they also filter and deepen the pond to increase water storage capacity. The volunteers say that because of their efforts, ground water level has been increased and biodiversity has been maintained, around the pond area.

Divya who volunteered for the cleaning drive for the first time, said

“I have been working in Chennai but I was not satisfied. Contributing to social projects like this gives me purpose and happiness.”

Centre defends Delhi LG’s status, slams Kejriwal by saying NCT region belongs to the whole nation

0

Ever since the Kejriwal led Aam Aadmi Party has come into power in Delhi, it has been at loggerheads with the Lieutenant governor (LG) of the National Capital Region.

The fight has included instances like AAP hurling personal barbs against former LG Najeeb Jung by calling him a Congress agent and new LG Anil Baijal being almost held hostage by 45 AAP MLAs who camped in his office demanding that he clear some Mohalla clinic flies.

Back in 2016 the AAP government suffered a blow in this power tussle after the Delhi High Court held that the lieutenant governor is the administrative head of Delhi. It also quashed two high profile probes setup by the Kejriwal govt.

The AAP government though refused to accept defeat and knocked on the doors of the Supreme Court. The apex court during the proceedings also observed that the constitution “prima facie” gives primacy to the LG in Delhi’s affairs but also stated that LG can’t sit on the files sent by the Delhi government for approval.

In the same proceedings, the centre has defended the Delhi High court verdict which declared the LG as Delhi’s administrative head. The centre told the apex court that the National Capital Territory belongs to the whole nation and one can’t say that it belongs only to the people of Delhi.

Additional solicitor general Maninder Singh also took a possibly veiled dig against Kejriwal by saying that:

I won’t take names. But the head of the local government says he will decide where the police commissioner will sit, where the Republic Day parade will be held

He as a result raised questions whether the national security and interest can be compromised. He also claimed that the union government has the supremacy as far as the Delhi legislative assembly is concerned.

He further asserted that a union territory remains an union territory even if it has a legislative assembly. He added that, it would be “undemocratic to say that the legislative assembly of Delhi will have the same power as the Union of India has.

It remains to be seen what conclusion the Supreme Court draws in this whole affair. It also needs to be seen whether AAP and the centre finally come to a settlement or whether the tussle would continue to grow till the Delhi assembly elections in 2020.

Blow to loan defaulters: Major amendment in Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code gets President’s nod

0

When will we see some steps to alleviate the situation of banks? When will the Government go after the borrowers who have run away after converting their loans in NPAs? Why are the rich being allowed to go scot-free? Such questions can come to the mind of only those who are living under rock, since in yet another move, the Government is now sealing the coffin of those who took the banks for a ride, during UPA’s era.

A day after the Cabinet approved the ordinance to amend the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, President Kovind gave his assent for the same. The ordinance will prevent wilful defaulters or promoters with some history of defaulting, from bidding for their own or other stressed assets at a discount. It will help prevent misuse of the Code as the defaulters are prohibited from submitting a resolution plan.

According to Ministry of Finance, the amendments will keep the wilful defaulters who are associated with non-performing assets or are habitually non-compliant, who may risk successful resolution of insolvency of a company, at bay.

Such persons will also be restricted from participation in resolution or liquidation process.

The Insolvency and Bankruptcy Board of India (IBBI) has also been given additional powers. This is amongst one of the many steps the government is taking to bring about reforms in the finance sector. As per the World Bank Data, the Insolvency and bankruptcy code was one of the key factors, which enabled a 30 rank jump in the Ease of Doing Business rankings.

The recent Moody’s report, which gave India its first ratings upgrade in over a decade, also spoke highly of the Insolvency and bankruptcy code:

Recent announcements of a comprehensive recapitalization of Public Sector Banks (PSBs) and signs of proactive steps towards a resolution of high NPLs through use of the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act 2016 are beginning to address a key weakness in India’s sovereign credit profile.

With this new amendment, the Code is only bound to be much stronger, and robust. The government believes these steps would strengthen the formal economy and encourage honest businesses and budding entrepreneurs to work in a trustworthy, predictable regulatory environment.

AltNews co-founder caught lying again, forced to apologize by alert social media users

0

Fake news is a real menace in this world of quick reportage and paid propaganda. Amidst it all, a leftist portal called AltNews had proclaimed itself to be a ‘Fact Checker’. As it turns out, AltNews turned out to be just another leftist rag with a severe bias. We reported a few days ago how one of their co-founders who runs a Facebook account called “susu swamy” was caught spreading fake news about BS Yeddyurappa

Of course, the founders of AltNews don’t stop just at spreading fake news. They also vilify people personally, specially (and probably one) the ones who don’t agree with their political preferences and ideology. Recently, AltNews founder Pratik Sinha went after Rahul Roushan, who runs OpIndia.com, targeted him personally and outed his personal details in tweets which many social media users deemed to be similar to veiled threats. Rahul Roushan hit back in a stinging article that was posted on his personal blog.

Further, Ms. Dimple Kaul found Pratik Sinha of AltNews checking her LinkedIn profile and had said he has been cyber stalking her.

Considering the patrons of AltNews indulge in first finding out and then outing personal details, we can’t say Ms. Kaul’s fears are completely misplaced.

The above may suggest that AltNews co-founders are very adept at cyber-sleuthing and investigating details online. But it appears, this expertise is reserved only to target ideological opponents. Yesterday, the co-founder of AltNews, ‘SuSu Swamy’ was caught lying again. Yes, ironical considering they claim to run a “fact check” website.

We took a video of the Facebook post, assuming it would be later deleted and we didn’t want to be ‘accused of photoshopping’ which seems to be the go to excuse of the liberal.

Soon, after Mr. Susu Swamy had peddled his lie, his own followers called him out. Again, ironic but unsurprising.

The video uploaded by Mr. Susu was actually a video of Mumbai Maratha Kranti Morcha at JJ Flyover.

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4oA95_ArlRc]

Mr. Susu soon deleted his Facebook post and updated it with verifiable information (finally).

What perhaps needs to be noted is, this wasn’t a momentarily lapse in judgement. This wasn’t a novice retweeting or sharing something because he didn’t know better. This was an alleged fact checker taking the time out to deliberately, with purpose seek an unrelated video out, download it, and then upload it on his own Social Media account with a news that caters to his ideological whims. Was this deliberate action, a deliberate lie which was deleted only because his own followers called him out? Otherwise, who knows how far and wide a lie could have been carried. Because who would doubt a self anointed fact checker?

Perhaps if AltNews devoted some time to fact checking their own posts themselves, rather than digging put personal information and slandering ‘ideological opponents’, they could avoid such embarrassing gaffes. Oh what a tangled web they weave, when they first practice to deceive.

Ahead of state elections, Gujarat church urges people to save India from “nationalist forces”

0

In a possible technique to influence voters, the Gandhinagar Archbishop has sent out an official communique, which among other things urges Christians to save the country from “Nationalist forces”.

The Archbishop named Thomas Macwan associated with the Archdiocese of Gandhinagar sent out an official letter dated 21st November terming the upcoming Gujarat assembly election as significant for the future course of the country.

The letter addressed to the ‘Eminences, Graces and Lordships’ began by saying that the dates of the Gujarat assembly elections have been declared. It later embarked upon a possible fear mongering exercise by alleging that human rights are being violated and the secular, democratic fabric of the country is at stake. It further alleged that:

Not a single day goes without an attack on our churches, faithful or institutions. There is a growing sense of insecurity among the minorities, OBCs, BCs, poor and so on. Nationalist forces are on the verge of taking over the country. The election results of Gujarat State Assembly can make a difference

It then urged the Gujarat churches to hold prayers and seek divine intervention so that people faithful to the Indian constitution are elected to the Gujarat assembly. This letter incidentally used subtlety to get its message across and didn’t mention any political party and nor did it make any direct vote appeal.

As reported by us in the past, such veiled suggestions might mean that the Church doesn’t violate the Supreme Court order which has banned canvassing for votes in the name of religion, caste or language.

The Archbishop Thomas Macwan in his defence has claimed that the letter has not been issued with any malicious intent.

This isn’t the only time churches have tried to influence political discourse in the country. In the run up to the recently concluded Goa elections, there were instances of a Goa Padre asking devotees at Christmas mass to vote for specific candidates. Later when current Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar had stood as a candidate during an assembly by-poll, a Goa church magazine had come out asking its followers to not vote for Parrikar.

Lalu’s wife issues violent threat to Narendra Modi, Lalu’s son does the same to Sushil Modi

0

In recent days fortunes of the Lalu Prasad Yadav led Rashtrya Janta Dal (RJD) have taken a turn for the worse.

After staying out of power for a decade, the RJD was back in power in 2015 with the help of its alliance partner Janta Dal United (JDU). Back then various experts felt that it may signal the beginning of a new era for the party, which now had two young sons of Lalu named Tejaswi and Tej Pratap, on the forefront of the government.

Everything crumbled in July after Chief Minister Nitish Kumar decided to walk out of the “Mahagathbandhan” and immediately joined hands with former allies BJP to form a fresh government.

As if this loss of power wasn’t enough, the Lalu family was also suffering a blow with the CBI filing cases against Lalu, Rabri and Tejaswai and raiding 12 locations in connection with it. Apart from this, the Enforcement Directorate had raided Lalu’s daughter Misa’s residence. Income Tax department had also seized the Benami assets of Misa and Tejaswi.

Now the Lalu family is in the news again for the wrong reasons after it has been reported that Rabri Devi and Tej Pratap Yadav have been issuing violent threats against top BJP leaders.

On Tuesday, former Chief Minister Rabri Devi had made a very violent public statement against Prime Minister Narendra Modi by claiming that there are many people in Bihar who are ready to chop Narendra Modi’s hand and slit his throat. She further claimed that people of Bihar would go to jail together:

These remarks were supposedly a response to BJP’s Bihar president and MP Nityanand Rai who had stated that, all fingers and hands raised against the prime minister should be broken or chopped off.

Rabri’s son Tej Pratap Yadav who used to hold important portfolios like health and environment seems to be in a pursuit to outdo his mother.

As per reports, he has outright threatened to assault Bihar Dy. CM Sushil Modi and also sworn to set Modi’s house on fire on the day of his son’s wedding:

Sushil Modi’s son is getting married on 3rd December and unlike the marriages of other politicians, it would be a low key affair. This includes having no dance, music and the guests would be served Prasad.

Tej Pratap though decided to cast an evil eye on the whole affair by uttering such a threat during a public meeting in Aurangabad in south-central Bihar. The justification provided by him for planning to carry out such an heinous act is that he wants to expose Sushil Modi’s supposed ill-gotten wealth.

Varun Dhavan takes a selfie on road, Mumbai police takes his class

0

Not only does the Mumbai Police have their heart in the right place, the social media team behind Mumbai Police Twitter account has been doing a fabulous job reaching out to the target audience by making quirky and witty references to spread awareness.

Today, Mumbai Police took actor Varun Dhavan to task for a picture of him published in a paper which showed him taking a selfie with a fan in middle of the road at a traffic signal. The picture was published in the tabloid Mid-day, which showed Dhavan obliging a visibly excited fan in an autorickshaw next to his car by stretching out of his car and taking a selfie.

Mumbai Police reprimanded Dhavan and said that such stunts look good only in films, in real life they could be a threat to him, the fan and even other commuters on the road. They said as a responsible Mumbaikar, they expect better from him. They even said that they are sending him an e-challan and warned him of harsher consequences next time he pulls up a stunt like this.

While many hailed the move, lot of people even said that taking a selfie when the vehicles were stopped for the traffic signal to turn green should not attract a challan.

Some ‘journalists’ even questioned the ‘risk’ factor in taking selfie like this.

While fans of Dhavan and other ‘actors’ thought the challan was unnecessary.

Perhaps Mumbai Police should take this as an opportunity to remind them that India has the highest selfie related deaths in the world. The ‘selfie’ craze has been so rampant that Mumbai Police had also run a #SafetyBeforeSelfie campaign on Twitter trying to make citizens aware that they should not put themselves in dangerous situations for a selfie.

Mumbai Police has also identified 15 sites across city which are so dangerous that they are declared ‘selfie-free’ points.

Meanwhile, Varun Dhavan has accepted his mistake and apologised and promised to be more careful in future.

Karnataka Congress minister loses cool, slaps a student for clicking selfie

0

Clicking a selfie with a public representative you elected could get you slapped! In a shocking incident, Karnataka Congress leader and Energy Minister DK Shivkumar was caught slapping a student who wanted to take a selfie with him.

Shivkumar was unapologetic about his behaviour and said even termed it a ‘normal incident’.

He was speaking to media at a college in Belgaum when a student standing behind him tried to take a selfie with his mobile phone. Shivkumar got agitated and suddenly hit the student on his arm. Following this the student lost control of his phone and it crashed on the ground. The student was then seen rushing to retrieve his mobile, while Shivakumar nonchalantly went back to addressing media. When confronted by media persons, Shivkumar termed this incident as normal and went back to talking to media persons as if nothing happened.

Shivkumar is not new to controversies. Earlier in August, income tax department raided his residence for alleged tax evasion. The IT department had also seized Rs. 10 crore during the raids conducted at his Delhi residence and other locations.

Earlier this month he and his family were questioned by the income tax officials over seized documents and related assets including jewellery, cash and other properties.

Shivkumar had also hosted the Gujarat MLAs who were whisked away from Gujarat in middle of one of the worst floods in Gujarat prior to Rajya Sabha election to save Ahmed Patel’s seat.

Familiar follies : Congress and its Gujarat alliances

0

The Indian National Congress which was the vanguard of India’s freedom struggle has come to a point where it needs to introspect. The party has become bereft of any credible ideology which reflects its legacy and today relies heavily on unusual alliances for short-term political gain. This opportunistic pattern has continued in the runup to the Gujarat elections and is set to backfire on Congress.

With no clear leadership in the party, dynastic fiefdoms at all levels and rampant corruption, Congress has found itself unable to define a core set of values or a unifying ideology that its leaders and cadre can get behind. This lack of ideology is further exacerbated by a string of alliances designed only to isolate BJP. The theme of ‘opposition unity’ that Congress has been falling back upon does not enable it to take any principled stance on any issue or present a vision for the country. Congress today is truly malleable and mutable depending purely upon the electoral gains that can be made through these alliances. The jury may be out on the success of these coalition experiments but they have certainly taken a toll on the party’s organization. That seems to be the reason why in the last few elections even the most committed supporters of the party are seeking alternatives, let alone the non-partisan voters.

Congress has been trying to mask its desperate bid for power by positioning its coalition choices as attempts towards stringing together a “Secular front”. This is at best a reaction to BJP’s purported communal agenda and at worst a convenient political tool. Even while trying to define itself in the communal-secular duality, it has ironically aligned with communal forces on the other side of the spectrum. The Congress’s alliance with the parties like Muslim league and PFI was not stemming from an ideological commonality but are merely an attempt to tap into vote bank politics.

This political opportunism and lack of coherent ideology is quite prominent in the ongoing Gujarat campaign where Congress has tried to reconcile interests as diverse as the Patidars, Dalits, and OBCs. It is because this cobbled up a transactional alliance that a big chunk of its cadre has abandoned the party and Congress has to rely on candidates from outside the traditional fold of the party. Congress’ extensive reliance on Hardik Patel, Alpesh Thakore and Jignesh Mevani for electoral returns in Gujarat is more a sign of its tragic ideological downfall than any possibility of a political resurgence. The violent outbursts over ticket distribution, the hastily redrawn candidate list to placate vested interests all serve to underscore the point that the Congress-led coalition in Gujarat has no common ground except probably the hunger for power. This is a precursor to what will follow in the unlikely scenario that the Congress comes to power. The dissonance within the party is bound to lead to an unstable government unable to govern and distracted by constant political crises. And the development of the state will be its first victim.

Non-ideological electoral alliances have also contributed to the Congress’ lack of credibility on corruption. The UPA regime is a prime example of how such alliances led to Congress ignoring serious acts of impropriety by fellow coalition members. Congress instead of denouncing corruption often found itself defending and participating in the same. The 2G scam, involving the ally DMK, was the lowest point which largely contributed to Congress’ massive loss in 2014 general elections. During the first UPA government, Congress’ readiness to depend on the Left parties ultimately led to a serious deadlock on important issues of national interest and almost led to a premature term. The Mahagatbandhan that they put together in Bihar was again an attempt to ally with ideologically diverse groups with no ideological commonality. The alliance soon collapsed leaving Congress red-faced over its defense of Lalu Prasad Yadav.

Congress continues to pursue strange bedfellows in the political arena in spite of the bad precedents. Earlier this year during the Uttar Pradesh elections, Congress did a volte-face mid-campaign and aligned with Samajwadi Party. To the great surprise and confusion of the party workers, SP and Congress which were two different poles of the UP political calculus came together to counter BJP. The same party and the same cadre who were till that point questioning the SP government on its performance had to campaign for them in many constituencies. Many couldn’t find the common vision which would explain the hasty alliance and the performance of Congress and its alliance partner in the UP elections became a cautionary tale for those who seek alliances in politics.

Even after its desperate attempts to align with anyone, Congress has managed to wrestle only a few votes. Congress contested 41 seats in alliance with the DMK but could only win 8. In Uttar Pradesh, it contested 105 seats while allying with the Samajwadi Party and won a measly 7. In Bihar, it contested 41 out of 242 seats as a part of the Mahagathbandhan but won mere 27 seats. In spite of its rainbow coalition in Gujarat, the chances of a Congress win are extremely low.

These alliances and their eventual failure are illustrative of the ideological identity crisis which the Congress is going through. If Congress seeks to revive itself politically, it must go back to the whiteboard and clearly define what it stands for and what it represents. The constant reference to the party’s legacy will only go so far. The disillusioned cadre also seeks clearer definitions than ‘opposition unity’ and ‘keeping out the communal forces’. The common voter seeks more than hastily phrased electoral promises. What ails Congress today is deeper than what a mere transition in the party presidency can correct. And until that happens Congress is bound to disappoint in poll-bound Gujarat notwithstanding its seemingly powerful coalition.

Himanta Biswa Sarma terms reports alleging his insensitivity towards cancer patients as media distortion

Himanta Biswa Sarma, the senior BJP leader from Assam has recently been making a name for himself on Twitter.

We had reported how Sarma had via a tweet, tore in to Rahul Gandhi’s image building efforts using his pet dog Pidi. That tweet which currently has over 1 lakh retweets. He had later helped procure treatment for a Paralympic athlete via twitter and had also taken on former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Today though he was on the end of much criticism after media reports claimed that he had made an insensitive statement about cancer patients.

As per reports, Sarma who is also Assam’s health minister had stated that people suffer from life-threatening diseases like cancer because of divine justice meted out to them, for sins committed in the past:

A quote carried by TOI even claimed that Sarma quoted the Gita and the Bible to further this “theory” of his. He as per the report had made the alleged statement on Tuesday while distributing appointment letters to teachers in Guwahati.

Such an odd statement by him meant that the vultures soon started circling and it was latched on by the leftist websites. Scroll carried the news by titling it as, Cancer and accidents are ‘divine justice’ for our sins, says Assam minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Later former finance minister P Chidambaram decided to take potshots at Sarma who earlier used to be a Congress leader:

Sarma as a result decided to give his side of the story and claimed that the whole affair was a result of the media distorting his statement:

As per him, he simply stated the Hindus’ beliefs in karmic law and human suffering’s linkage with karmic deficiency. He later made a veiled gesture about Congress party being anti-Hindu by wondering as to whether Hindu philosophy can even be discussed there.

The exact context in which the statement by Sarma was made is not yet clear as there is no video clip yet of the alleged statement. Further, it appears that the statement was made yesterday — as this tweet by a local journalist suggests — but the national media decided to play it up only today.
