‘They killed my sister’s son and threw his severed head on the front yard’: Kashmiri Hindu woman recalls the brutalities her family faced

Vivek Agnihotri’s The Kashmir Files, a movie that depicts the atrocities and brutality inflicted on Kashmiri Hindus that had been converted up or denied for all these years, has really pulled on the heartstrings of all those victims who have until now, kept their past enshrouded. Since the heartwrenching film’s release, many families of Kashmiri Hindu victims have come forward to recount the pain, suffering, struggle and trauma of their loved ones, who fall prey to the Islamic terror in the valley in the 1990s.

There are many distraught testimonials that have emerged wherein the Kashmiri Hindu victims, who were forced to flee Kashmir, have narrated the monstrosities of the genocide. One such heartbreaking account was shared by a first-generation Kashmiri Hindu woman victim in a programme aired on India TV on March 14, the snippet of which was shared on Twitter by a user named Ashish (@KashmiriRefuge).

During the India TV chat show with The Kashmir Files team, the Kashmiri Hindu woman, who identified herself as Sarla, narrated the brutality inflicted on her relatives during the exodus of the Kashmiri Pandits from the valley in 1990.

Sarla stated that her family fled Kashmir on April 1st, fearing for their lives. They had left all of their belongings in their valley home. Sarla said that ten days later, on April 10, she and her husband returned to Kashmir to retrieve their belongings, adding that that particular night was the most terrifying night of their lives.

Sarla went on to say that once they arrived in Kashmir, they were met with a slew of threats and ran into people who were baying for the lives of Kashmiri Hindus. They felt it was not in their best interests to stay, so they managed to flee that night with the help of some acquaintances. “We didn’t have slippers on our feet, we didn’t eat anything, and we somehow got out of there… I will never forget that night until the day I die,” Sarla sneered.

Sarla added, “My uncle Zindalal Koul and my sister’s cousin Jagannath were brutally murdered ten days later, as we learned in the news. They gave him such a gruesome death that it sends shivers down our spines every time we recall the incident. They were initially hung from a tree. Then he had some of his body parts severed and his eyes gouged out. He was 75 years old, and this was the level of heinousness inflicted on a man of his age. “He was such a gem of a person, always willing to help others, and this is the kind of death he got,” the victim lamented.

Sarla went on to describe how some of her other relatives were also brutally murdered. She recalled how one of her cousins and her husband, both lecturers, had mysteriously vanished and are still missing to this day. Sarla remembered her other sister’s son being beheaded and his severed head being thrown in front of their house.

In response to the distressed victim, The Kashmir Files director Vivek Agnihotri stated that while researching for the film, he interviewed over 700 Kashmiri Hindus, most of whom had similar stories to tell. “I believe it is past time for people to express their pain and trauma. There will be no healing if the pain is suppressed “, Agnihotri said. Recalling the unfathomable brutality inflicted on Girija Tickoo, Agnihotri added that this film should be shown to every child in the country and around the world. This episode is a disgrace to humanity as a whole. It is now time for people to feel guilty, for people to discuss and hold debates on this issue so that another Kashmir does not emerge in India in the future, said Vivek Agnihotri.

The full India TV episode can be viewed here.

The Kashmir Files is based on true stories about Kashmiri Pandits. It transports viewers back to 1989, when conflict erupted in Kashmir as a result of rising Islamic Jihad, forcing the vast majority of Hindus to flee the valley. Between February and March 1990, approximately 100,000 of the valley’s total 140,000 Kashmiri Pandit inhabitants migrated, according to estimates. In the years that followed, more of them fled, until only about 3,000 families remained in the valley by 2011. The unspeakable brutality and trauma the Kashmiri Hindus had to face during that time is what Vivek Agnihotri has tried to bring to the fore through his film, which is steadily on its way to becoming a blockbuster movie.

TMC MP Nusrat Jahan comes up with bizarre argument against bullet train, claims that Indian soil is not suitable for it

On Wednesday, the Trinamool Congress Member of Parliament Nusrat Jahan made a bizarre claim on the floor of parliament, saying that the bullet train project in India is a bluff as the soil in the country is not fit to set up railway tracks to run high-speed trains.

Speaking in Lok Sabha, the actress-turned-politician Nusrat Jahan, the Lok Sabha member from West Bengal’s Basirhat constituency, claimed that the Indian soil is not fit to set up any infrastructure required to run the bullet trains technology. She expressed doubts over the success of the bullet train project by claiming that India lacked capabilities to run high-speed trains, unlike Japan.

“Dreams of Running bullet trains like Japan in India is a bluff to the Nation. Indian soil is not capable to set up such railway tracks on the Ground. It is the Science / not to be taken as one speech of a street corner meeting,” the TMC MP tweeted.

The bizarre speech made by Nusrat Jahan, which lacks a scientific understanding of India’s topography and questions the abilities of Indian engineers and scientists, evoked a strong reaction not just inside parliament but also from the general public. The video of Nusrat Jahan’s Lok Sabha speech has gone viral on the internet, with people ridiculing her.

Railway Minister slams TMC MP Nusrat Jahan

Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has hit out at TMC MP Nusrat Jahan for claiming that Indian soil is not fit for the bullet train technology. The minister said that the TMC MP was questioning the capabilities of Indian scientists.

Responding to the arguments, Vaishnaw said that the statement put out by Nusrat Jahan expressing doubts over the bullet train project was shameful. He slammed her by saying those who speak of “Maa-Maati-Manush” (Mother, Motherland, and People) are disrespecting the mother (soil) and the motherland.

“How can one say we cannot run bullet trains on Indian soil?” the Railway Minister asked the Trinamool Congress MP, adding that the TMC MP was disrespecting the country’s scientists and engineers by questioning their abilities.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw also gave details on the progress of the bullet train project and said that the work is being done at the speed of 8 km per month, along with the construction of pillars and bridges on all major rivers. He said that the government is planning to take this project at a speed of 10 km per month in the coming days.

It is notable that Indian Railways is already running semi-high-speed trains in India without any difficulty from soil, and there is no scientific evidence to back the claims of the TMC MP. Moreover, almost the entire length of the track for the bullet train project will be elevated, the tracks will not be on the ground.

Yoga soon to be a part of the sports curriculum in Saudi Arabia schools: Saudi Yoga committee working with Edu ministry

Yoga is soon going to be a part of the sports curriculum in Saudi Arabian schools. Saudi Arabia has decided to introduce certain yoga exercises in its school curriculum. These Yoga practices majorly include posture-based physical fitness, stress-relief technique, and relaxation technique.

The president of the Saudi Yoga Committee (SYC) Nouf Al-Marwaai has announced the decision on 14th March 2022. In this announcement, he has cited the benefits of Yoga for physical and mental fitness. It is notable that, in November 2017, Saudi Arabia’s ministry of commerce had approved the teaching and practice of yoga as a sport in the Kingdom.

On 9th March 2022, SYC had organized a lecture for school principals and physical education teachers. This was basically an introductory session in which the coordination between the SYC and the Saudi School Sports Federation was highlighted. The aim of the session was to mobilize the strategy from the Ministry of Education and the SYC. Raising the levels of students participating in sports at local levels, increasing the representation of Saudi Arabia in various international sports events, and promoting the health of young Saudis were among the other major objectives of this lecture session.

According to a report by the Arab News, Khalid Jama’an Al-Zahrani, certified yoga instructor and founder of Ananda Yoga Studio has said, “As I started to dive deep in yoga, I never stopped discovering its incredible benefits as is it a whole and transformative sport that leads its practitioners to a calmer and clearer mind and stronger and healthier physique.”

He further said, “Our school system in the Kingdom has always ensured that all its activities are aimed at contributing to the development of the students, from both physical and academic aspects, and I believe that introducing yoga to the Saudi education system is a nourishing and effective move.”

Al-Zahrani added, “Having yoga at school would be an investment as it would lead to more educational reforms that would benefit children, their families, and the community as a whole.”

Underlining the importance of Yoga in a day-to-day life that is full of technological advancements and electronic gadgets, he said, “We live in a technological era where everyone’s on their phones, tablets, devices, distracted from the present, which has a negative impact on our concentration. And so, we need to train our youngsters and ourselves to reflect on what is within, and practice yoga to gain discipline and nurture the mind with what is important.”

Nouf Al-Marwaai informed that SYC plans to expand its scope and objectives. She also said that in many areas of Saudi, there is a need for large-scale implementation of teaching Yoga in schools. She is known to be the first Saudi woman to teach yoga and she has played an important role in gaining the Ministry of Education’s approval and pushing for yoga as a sport. Nouf Al-Marwaai was honored with the Padma Shri award, India’s fourth-highest civilian award, by President Ram Nath Kovind.

‘Suicide bombing is Haram, but I will become one and blow up entire opposition’: Pakistan minister threatens as Imran Khan-led govt faces a vote of confidence

As Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan faces tough no-confidence motion against his government in a span of days, the senior ministers have stepped up attacks against the united opposition and some have even threatened to destroy them.

In an explosive statement on Tuesday, Pakistan’s Civil Aviation Minister Ghulam Sarwar Khan threatened the opposition parties that he would turn into to become a suicide bomber and blow up the entire opposition.

In a video that has gone viral on the internet, Pakistan’s Civil Aviation Minister Ghulam Sarwar Khan was heard saying that even though suicide bombing is forbidden in Islam, he would turn into one and blow up the entire opposition for attempting to bring down Imran Khan-led Pakistan government.

“Suicide is haram, but I wish to be a ‘bumbaar kush’ (suicide bomber) and blow up the entire opposition,” the minister said in a viral video.

The Pakistan minister added that he wants to blow himself up at a place where all the enemies of the country and religion are assembled.

Imran Khan himself has mounted an attack on the opposition leaders and had referred to opposition leaders such as PML-N President Shahbaz Sharif, Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman, and Pakistan People’s Party Co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari as “three stooges”.

Imran Khan has claimed the united opposition has joined the west, especially the US, to remove him from power through a no-confidence vote. Earlier, Imran Khan had threatened the opposition that his one million supporters would assemble in D-chowk of Islamabad on the day of no-confidence is put into voting.

Several Pakistan ministers, including Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, have threatened the opposition leaders that PTI workers would surround their houses to prevent them from voting on the motion.

The voting on a no-confidence motion against the Imran Khan government will take place between March 26-30. The Speaker of the National Assembly is expected to call the session on March 22.

As BARC releases weekly data of news channels, Arnab has a message for his team and Aaj Tak, Times Now: Here is what he said

On March 17, the Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) released its weekly data for news channels after a long break. As per sources, Republic TV (English News Channel) has surpassed the rating and grabbed the top position in week 10 of 2022. Times Now, CNN 18 are in the second and third position respectively, followed by India Today Television. Furthermore, NDTV 24×7 rating was not mentioned as the network had opted out of the rating system.

Arnab Goswami, Managing Director and Editor-in-Chief, Republic Media Network, said in a video statement, “Remember… What all had happened to us. Never Forget what all happened in this newsroom. Never forgive and never forget. And I want to tell the people of Aaj Tak and other news channels, remember this Times Now… remember this India Today… Arnab Goswami never forgives and never forgets. The Republic Media Network will not forgive… will not forget.”

He further issued a statement that was released on Republic’s Twitter handle in which he said, “With a phenomenal 44% viewership share in prime time and 41% overall, Republic TV is 200% greater than the closest competitor in the English genre. It is 200% greater than Times Now, 270% greater than India Today, and 330% greater than CNN news 18. Republic TV today is the unquestioned supreme leader of English news.”

Speaking to OpIndia, Arnab said, “Times Now lost all its viewership the day I left. They tried dirty tricks, and they have lost again. People are angry with Times Now for lying about Republic. Only if they apologise to Republic will people forgive them. BARC viewership proves Republic is the unchallenged #1 across India.”

It was noteworthy that in 2020, Arnab Goswami and others from Republic TV were wrongly accused of TRP tempering by Mumbai police. Over time, as the details of the case came to light, it was revealed that the whole case was a conspiracy against Arnab Goswami and his team. In February 2022, former Police Commissioner of Mumbai Police, Param Bir Singh had confirmed the TRP case against Republic Media Network was a hoax and part of a planned conspiracy against Journalist Arnab Goswami. During an interrogation by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), Singh also alleged that ex-Police Officer Sachin Vaze was taking instructions from the then Home Minister Anil Deshmukh in the TRP case along with other cases.

After the alleged case came to light, BARC had suspended releasing weekly data of News Channel ratings. It was reported that the council would start releasing the data in January as I&B Ministry had asked them to resume their services. Subsequently, in February 2022, NDTV decided to opt out of BARC rating.

Amitabh Bachchan’s cryptic tweet amid ‘The Kashmir Files’ release leaves netizens speculating, read details

On Thursday, amid the massive success of the recently released movie, ‘The Kashmir Files’, Bollywood Actor Amitabh Bachchan has sent Twitter into a frenzy after he made a cryptic tweet on social media. “We know now, what we never knew then”, he tweeted leaving the netizens to speculate the purpose behind his words.

The movie directed by Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri is based on the true events of the Kashmiri Hindu genocide. The tweet by one of the senior actors of Bollywood comes as the film is on its way to the 100 crore club. However, though Bachchan did not mention anything directly about ‘The Kashmir Files’, netizens are speculating that the tweet was posted specifically to praise the movie that has done wonders in the cinema industry.

Assuming that tweet is a review statement of ‘The Kashmir Files’, one of the users wondered if the actor was saying openly what he wanted to say. “Sir, you are great. Are you talking about the #TheKashmirFiles”, the tweet read.

While many called him ‘money-minded’ and ‘coward’, some netizens also mocked him for his role in the movie Bemisal (1982). This is after a scene from the movie Bemisal (1982) starring Amitabh Bachchan is making rounds over social media where the actor is heard glorifying the Islamic invaders and giving them the credit for the good places in India.

The controversial part starts at 11:45 minutes in the movie, where Bachchan talks about hill stations and the conversation eventually leads to the ‘discovery’ of Kashmir. He goes on to say that every single hill station in India has been discovered by the British, except Kashmir, which was discovered by the Mughals. The camera then moves on to actress Rakhee, who praises the Mughals in terms of their music, paintings, and architecture.

Condemning the scene after the release of ‘The Kashmir Files’, one of the users shared the clip and said that Bollywood people had deliberately whitewashed the truth. “We always knew! Just that some willingly chose to white-wash it”, read the tweet. Another one stated that the film ‘The Kashmir Files’ had opened Amitabh Bachchan’s eyes now. “Earlier you said in your movies that Kashmir was discovered by the Mughals and the rest of the hill stations were discovered by the British. Well now my eyes have opened”, the tweet quoted.

Meanwhile, prominent Twitter handles also joined the speculative stance and suggested the Bollywood actor to name the movie. “Wonder what Bachchan Ji is talking about?”, posed Anurag Saxena.

Journalist Swati Goel Sharma tweeted saying, “Then, we were told that Kashmir was discovered by Mughals”.

In the instances further, netizens also opined that the actor was probably scared of his wife Jaya Bachchan and so was not naming the film directly. “When you want to do a Sanghi tweet but the wife is in laal topi”, a user said. Another tweet read, “Itna darr acha nhi hai wife ka.. Jo sidhe muh tarif na kr pao TKF ki (Praise the movie without your fearing your wife)”.

Jaya Bachchan is a member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha from the Samajwadi Party.

Here are some more funny replies to Bollywood Actor Amitabh Bachchan’s tweet-

It is important to note that the movie starring Anupam Kher, Darshan Kumar, Pallavi Joshi, Mithun Chakraborty, Mrunal Kulkarni, and others has managed to see a further increase in collections with Rs. 19.05 crores coming in on its first Wednesday. It had impressed the box office by making the business of around Rs 4.25 crores on the very first day of its public screening. Interestingly, the movie which was initially released across just 650-700 screens has also seen an increase in screens and shows to accommodate the audience’s demand.

The film is inspired by the true stories of Kashmiri Pandits. It takes viewers back to 1989, when due to rising Islamic Jihad, conflict erupted in Kashmir, forcing the great majority of Hindus to flee the valley. According to estimates, roughly 100,000 of the valley’s total 140,000 Kashmiri Pandit inhabitants migrated between February and March 1990. More of them fled in the years that followed until just about 3,000 families remained in the valley by 2011. The movie based on video interviews with first-generation Kashmiri Pandit victims of the Kashmir Genocide was originally slated to be released in theatres on January 26, 2022, but was postponed because of the increasing number of COVID-19 instances. It has now been released and is open to watch in theatres.

Mosques in Uttar Pradesh change Namaz timings as Holi and Shab-e-Barat falls on the same day

0

At least 22 mosques in Uttar Pradesh have decided to change the time of their Friday prayers because of Holi celebrations.

According to reports, the Friday Jumma namaz and the ‘khutba’ (discourse) at most of the mosques in Lucknow are usually offered at 12:30 PM. As Holi and Shab-e-Barat festivals will be celebrated across the country on the same day this year, at least 22 mosques in the city have decided to change the time and hold Friday prayers after 1.30 PM, announced the Islamic Centre of India (ICI).

The mosques that have changed their timings, include the Jama Masjid at Aishbagh Idgah, the Ek Minara Masjid at Akbari gate, Masjid Shahmina Shah, and Masjid Chowk.

The ICI had released a list of the old and new Jumma namaz timings and left it for the mosques to decide the timings. But, most mosques have agreed to begin the prayer at a different time instead of their usual times.

Now, the Namaz time has been shifted to 2 PM from 12.45 PM at the Jama Masjid Idgah. Similarly, Jumma namaz will be held at 1.30 PM at Masjid Shahmina Shah instead of the regular 1 PM. Maulana Rasheed, the leader of ICI and Imam of the Aishbagh Eidgah, issued an advisory earlier this week saying that mosques should change their Jumma namaz timings to maintain harmony and dignity by avoiding any untoward event on Holi.

With Shab-e-Barat also falling on the same day, clerics have also advised Muslims to visit mosques and the graves of their loved ones only after the Holi events are over. The alert advised Muslim men to conduct Jumma prayers at their local mosques rather than going out to a mosque further away from home.

Four years earlier, a similar situation had occurred when Holi and Shab-e-Barat were celebrated on the same day.

Shab-e-Barat is a mourning festival for Muslims. On Shab-e-Barat, Muslims visit the graves of their ancestors to pray for their souls and do collective worship to ask for forgiveness of their wrongdoings.

Nizamuddin Markaz to reopen for Shab-e-barat after Delhi HC orders, had become the first epicentre of Covid-19 outbreak in India

The Delhi High Court on Wednesday has given a nod to reopen the Nizamuddin Markaz which remained closed since March 2020 for a day on occasion of Shab-e-barat. It was the same site where the Tablighi Jamaat congregation was held which resulted in a mega-spreader of the Covid-19 virus in India, with attendees hiding from authorities and carrying the infection to almost all states in India.

The Single-member bench of Justice Manoj Kumar Ohri removed the restriction for a congregation liming only 100 people on one floor and has agreed to open the three floors at the Markaz. The Court has ordered the management to look after the strict obeyance of Covid-19 protocols and social distancing to be followed when devotees offer namaz on the campus. The decision came with Shab-e-Barat, the Islamic festival for the remembrance of ancestors is around the corner on March 18-19.

The Delhi High Court has permitted to open the ground floor and other three floors in the building at 12 PM on March 18, which will be closed at 4 PM the other day. This came as a response to an application filed by Delhi Waqf Board seeking to open the Markaz which opens up as a mass congregation space during Shab-e-Barat and during the month of Ramzan, commencing on April 2. The matter for re-opening the mosque during Ramzan has been listed for March 31.

The Court has addressed the issue of foreign nationals and OCI cardholders willing to offer prayers at the Mosque, and the condition remains that they will not be allowed to do so inside the Markaz premises. While the advocate for Delhi Police Rajat Nair argued that no Tablighi activities should be allowed to take place, it was later agreed that the Mosque will be only used for offering prayers.

The High Court before giving permission to the Delhi Waqf board had asked its lawyer Waqeeh Shafiq to file an application before the SHO of the Nizamuddin Police Station seeking permission to open the floors for the congregation at the Markaz. Citing High Court’s order on April 15, 2021, the Police was ready to allow 50 persons on the first floor of the Mosque and the same number at Masjid Bangley Wali to offer prayers five times a day. The Centre, in its recent affidavit, had also opposed the full re-opening of the Markaz on religious festivities.

In September, against the plea by the Waqf board to restore the full gathering at the Markaz, The Centre filed an affidavit asserting the premises are under a serious investigation following the outbreak of Covid-19 cases from the precinct all over the country in March 2020. “The present premises has been kept under lock and key in view of the fact that the organisers of Markaz and the masjid are under investigation in an FIR… and the said case is under investigation wherein notices have already been served seeking details of plot/plots related to Masjid Banglewali Markaz, Kashif-ul-Uloom madarsa, Basti Nizamuddin to provide ownership documents etc,” said the centre in its affidavit.

However, the Waqf board lawyer cited that the Omicron strain of Covid-19 was not as fatal as the earlier ones, and now that other spaces of public gathering have opened, there should be no impediment to direct reopening of this waqf property. The decision finally came in favour of the Waqf board with an understanding with the Delhi Police over the strict imposition of Covid-19 protocols.

Nizamuddin Markaz and coronavirus outbreak in 2020

In last week of March 2020, hundreds of Tablighi Jamaat attendees were found living inside the markaz, many of which were in violation of their visa rules. Many of the attendees were found to be covid-19 positive and despite showing symptoms had continued to stay there or move to interiors of country without getting themselves tested. Subsequently many were moved to quarantine centres to ensure treatment and arrest the spread of virus. However, even then, many Tablighi Jamaat attendees had attacked healthcare workers and even created ruckus at quarantine centres.
