Former Finance Minister Arun Jaitley vacates government bungalow, returns cars and staff

The former finance minister Arun Jaitley, who had voluntarily opted out of the cabinet in the second term of the Modi government has vacated the government bungalow allotted to him and surrendered the official cars provided to him. He has also reduced the security and returned most of the government officials from his personal staff.

According to a report in Swarajya, Arun Jaitley is moving to his own house in South Delhi after his family asked him to move out of the government bungalow due to ill-health. Jaitley has reportedly asked his personal staff to pay the pending dues of electricity, water bill, phone bills and discontinue the 25 newspapers.

Being a lawyer himself, Jaitley is following the Supreme Court verdict that directed the legislators to vacate their government bungalows within a month after the dissolution of the previous Lok Sabha. Jaitley has planned to get a smaller government accommodation after his treatment is done and hopes of returning in November this year.

After the 17th Lok Sabha election victory, Jaitley had written a letter to the Prime Minister opting out of the newly formed NDA government, citing health issues. A diabetic, Jaitley’s health deteriorated after he had a kidney transplant in May last year.

Smriti Irani in McDonald: We’re loving it

Smriti Irani is a formidable opponent. You don’t need Rahul Gandhi to tell you. Anybody who has engaged her in the Parliament, TV debates or open public forum would swear in the name of Allah. Barkha Dutt won’t deny it nor would Rahul Kanwal. You could also ask Rashid Alvi (who? Well Congress). Or a collective opposition who were not safe even in their trenches as she rumbled in Parliament a few seasons ago.

In the above instances, Ms Irani was dealing with hardened ideologues and masters of deception. Politicians who cook facts quicker than Maggi noodles. Journalists, those cloak-and-dagger assassins, without a trace of blood on their pen. Yet they froze like rats do when bathed in car flashlights. You don’t test the depth of a river with both feet, do you?

This is a woman who is just not a prima donna in front of cameras. Away from the limelight, she walked hundreds of miles in countless visits to uproot the Prophet of Amethi. Door to door, ear to ear, shoulder to shoulder, in grime and dust, scorching sun or raining heavens, lending ears and shoulders in equal measure or corner of her saree to sponge the tears of wailing widows.

When Ms Irani speaks, it’s difficult to say if her Hindi is better than her English. When words in chaste Urdu are effortlessly slipped in. There are flow and rhythm, snarl and contempt all constructing a perfect mosaic. You are confronted with a holistic picture, its’ edges secured in the frame of clinching facts. When she performs, it’s often better than her words. It makes a material difference to the recipients; and not just aesthetics to its listeners.

We have no evidence where Ms Irani cut her teeth in the unforgiving world of the public gaze. To an unknown, a TV actress would be a guess too wide off the mark. It’s like somebody telling you he outran an Audi. That she was an Alice looking for her Wonderland in a Miss India contest once. That she also once donned checked blue shirt and trousers with an apron to greet us in a McDonald cap in Bandra, Mumbai.

Yes, she worked in McDonald once. Clearing tables and sweeping floors. All for a princely Rs 1,800 a month. We wouldn’t have known it but, for a textile council securing her Provident Fund employee certificate from McDonald and toying with the idea if its’ auction could come to the aid of a group of women artisans. McDonald was a refuge when she was still nursing her rejection for an air hostess job. She was told she “lacked a good personality.”

This is a woman who has made her own destiny. She prised open the door of TV soap operas and her main lead in “Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi”(Because a mother-in-law was also a daughter-in-law once) is a TV legend like few have been. Apparently, her talent was no less than her looks for she was deemed best actress for five straight years. She was a female superstar if ever there was one, of the small screen.

Maybe stardom helped Ms Irani in the political arena. Maybe not for she was a member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in her childhood itself even though she joined BJP formally in 2003 only. Her grandfather, a member of the RSS, must have been an early influence. As would have been her mother, Shibani Bagchi (a Bengali) who was a Jana Sangh member. Her father, Ajay Kumar Malhotra, hasn’t anything political known about him. Thus there are no rough edges here: She is an ideologically rounded person. She is married and has three kids and pictures of a happy family are aplenty.

Leaping through the ranks, Ms Irani became national secretary of BJP in 2010. The same year she was heading her party’s women’s wing: BJP Mahila Morcha. Next year, she entered Rajya Sabha as a parliamentarian from Gujarat. Early in her career, she took on Kapil Sibal of Congress in the 2004 General Elections from Chandni Chowk constituency in the Capital.

In Narendra Modi’s two cabinets, Ms Irani has held various portfolios. An educated guess is that she has moved between portfolios, particularly in the case of Information and Broadcasting Ministry, because of her combative working style. She is eminently capable of ruffling a few feathers. We all know Narendra Modi would rather have his team concentrate on developmental work than lock horns in public with dimwits. She has had relatively quiet and non-controversial ministries of Women and Child Development and Textiles in her latest brief. But all of us know, Ms Irani would dominate the coming decades of Indian politics. In defeating Rahul Gandhi, she probably has caused the biggest upset not just of 2019 Polls but in an entire generation. Just 43, here is a woman who is a role model for not just millions in her gender but many more in a rather ruthless, largely men’s arena called politics.

Sajid, Abid and Taufeeq attack Bajrang Dal workers, mob attacks police to aid in their escape: Reports

In a shocking incident in Shamli, Uttar Pradesh, a group of Muslim youths attacked two Bajrang Dal workers, seriously injuring them over the issue of ‘Momos’. It is also reported that a mob Muslims gathered up to beat up police personnel and managed to rescue their arrested friend.

According to the reports, a group of Muslim men, Sajid, Abid and Taufeeq had come to Ajudhya Chowk of the city to have Momos. Two Bajrang Dal workers – Himanshu and Harsh, were also present at the spot. Soon, a war of words took place at the spot, which later turned violent. The Muslim youth were soon joined by a group of their associates, who thrashed Himanshu and Harsh leaving them seriously injured.

As Bajrang Dal workers were attacked, several others present at the market stood for their support and rescued them. They also informed the local police regarding the incident.

The local police reached the spot and tried to arrest one of the attackers. However, as per a report, another group of Muslims allegedly got mobilised at the spot trying to the get the arrested man freed. During the incident, even some police officials were attacked by the group and had their uniforms torn off.

The local businessmen and Hindu organisations are demanding strict action against the culprits.

The Shamli police have registered the complaint against Sajid, Abid and Taufeeq, along with 50 others. The police have also begun their search to nab the attackers.

Suresh Rana, Minister in the Uttar Pradesh government, took stock of the situation and sought a fair inquiry into the issue and demanded the arrest of attackers.

Dear ICC, instead of policing the players, please spend some time improving the umpiring

ICC’s main job is to reduce the teams in a World Cup, and to make sure players show no emotions during a match, or even after a match. Small things like continuously terrible umpiring ruining cricket matches generally don’t register on their radar.

To be fair to the ICC, it is difficult to focus on Umpires when you are scanning all the players to see if someone is smiling incorrectly or if someone has an untucked shirt or if someone has an insignia on the gloves etc.

West Indies players were left shocked and confused after the game yesterday as high class umpiring once again grabbed the headlines. Captain Holder and T20 Captain Brathwaite expressed their frustration with some of the decisions after the game and we are sure that they will be penalised by ICC, without doing anything about the cause of that frustration, the umpiring.

The umpires are rarely looking at front foot no-ball anymore. We saw during the India-Australia Test series where the front line was merely a suggestion, bowlers were free to cross it without the fear of getting called for no-ball. We see it so many times that umpires check for no-ball AFTER a wicket, to be sure that the batsman is out.

As Gayle’s wicket showed yesterday, just checking that ball is not enough, one must be checking the previous ball as well with the free-hit rule in place. Of course, if the umpires were doing their job, we won’t need to check anything afterwards.

There is an argument that umpires are focusing more on the other end, where the main action is going to take place, so they miss out on bowlers overstepping the mark at times. In that case, if only the ICC had a way of helping the umpires. If only they had a guy sitting in the pavilion with all the camera angles available to him who can look at the landing of the front foot on every ball. If only there was a guy who can whisper “No Ball” in on-field umpire’s ear after watching every ball from the square angle. Wait a minute, there is one such guy already sitting there, with the technology already available, with a direct line to the on-field umpire!

The umpires very obviously need help, ICC has the technology to help them, it will not slow down the game at all, it will improve decision making, it will avoid the farce like yesterday, it seems like the common sense thing to do, which is precisely why ICC will never did it.

Aligarh child murder: Victim’s mother says co-accused Aslam had raped his own daughter earlier

The shocking murder of a 2.5-year-old girl Tina (name changed) for a paltry sum of money has shaken the country to its core. Now, Tina’s mother has come forth and alleged that one of co-accused Aslam had raped his own 4-year-old daughter earlier.

The mother of the deceased girl, Shilpa Sharma has accused one of the co-accused of having raped his own 4-year-old daughter after which his wife took their daughter to her parent’s home.

Shilpa Sharma has also pleaded PM Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath to swiftly bring the perpetrators of this heinous crime to justice and asked for capital punishment for them.

Tina, resident of Tappal, Aligarh district, Uttar Pradesh, was choked to death by Zahid and Aslam over an argument with her family regarding a small loan amount of Rs 10000.

Zahid had brutally strangled Tina with a dupatta (scarf) and hid the body in his house in a straw bag. After three days when the corpse started emitting a foul odour, Zahid threw Tina’s body in a pile of trash. Tina’s body was completely decomposed with her eyes gouged out.

According to the post-mortem report, vital parts of Tina’s body are missing and the post-mortem report is inconclusive whether she was raped. However, the case will now be investigated under POCSO (Protection of Children against Sexual Offences) Act as well.

More than half of funds meant to help Pakistani Hindu refugees raised as netizens come together

Pakistani Hindu refugees living in the wretched condition in Delhi’s Adarsh Nagar have something to cheer for as groups of empathetic social media users have come forward to alleviate their misery and improve their living standards.

Many of these migrants are living as refugees in Delhi’s Adarsh Nagar for a very long time now. Their condition is so pitiable that a large number of them struggle to make their ends meet. Electricity is a privilege for them and in this scorching summer when the mercury is nearing close to 47-48 degree Celsius in the National Capital, these unfortunate people are residing without electricity in such a blazing summer.

A fundraiser is being floated online to solicit funds and help provide the Adarsh Nagar migrants with Electricity. The Pakistani Hindus are living in the area without an Electricity connection for over a year now. Earlier, the group was provided with a diesel generator for their Electricity woes but they couldn’t get the authorities to restore the electric connection. The group now aims to bring Solar Powered solution to reduce the difficulties faced by the migrants.

At the time of this report being written, Rs 4 lakh 10 thousand out of their stated goal of raising Rs 6.6 lakhs has been raised. The funds are to be utilised for purchasing Solar Panels with an inverter, battery, fan, lights and a power point for the remaining 50 households with solar power. It is an uphill task as each Solar Power unit costs roughly Rs 12000 excluding the freight and installation charges. The contribution can be made here.

Many concerned citizens have now come to fore to help the Pakistani Hindus and improve the living conditions of the migrants. Contributions are being made to ensure that basic amenities are provided to these residents. However, this campaign is also a testimony to how successive governments in our country have failed to provide an honourable and dignified life to Hindus who fled their country and came to India with the hope of living a better, safe and secure life.

The Pakistani Hindu refugees have expressed their gratitude to the people for assuaging their predicament and providing their children with fans and light bulbs. But there are 50 households still remaining to be provided with Solar powered electricity.

In the past too, netizens had come together to provide blankets, shawls and woollen clothes to these migrants who were battling the bone-chilling cold of the National Capital without having the sufficient means to protect themselves from it.

Aligarh child murder: SIT to probe the case, sexual abuse charges to also be probed

Following the gruesome murder of two-and-a-half-years-old Tina (name changed) in Aligarh’s Tappal, the Uttar Pradesh Police has set up a special investigative team (SIT) to probe the murder.

As per the Police, the POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) Act will also be there in the case. According to DG (Law & Order) Anand Kumar, Aligarh SSP has set up an SIT to fast-track the case and ensure that the culprits are brought to justice. He added that investigation is proceeding on the basis of scientific evidence.

He further added that two main culprits based on the statements of the parents have been arrested and action has been taken against the concerned SHO for delinquency. He further added that any other police personnel found guilty of any negligence will be taken to task.

We had earlier reported how efforts were being made to whitewash the crimes of the accused, Zahid and Aslam, by claiming that the child was not raped despite the fact that the post-mortem report has been inconclusive. Now, with the POCSO Act also to be included in the case, one can say that the angle of sexual abuse and rape cannot be definitely ruled out in this case.

Moreover, after the DG’s remarks on action being taken against the police officials for negligence goes on to show that the police statement cannot be taken as an ultimate truth, especially when scientific evidence points other way.

Mamata Banerjee to skip NITI Aayog meet yet again as it is ‘fruitless’ for her

In the aftermath of the drubbing the TMC got in the recently concluded Lok Sabha election at the hands of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Mamata Banerjee refuses to attend the Niti Aayog meeting scheduled on June 15 calling it ‘fruitless’

In a letter addressed to PM Modi, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced that she will not attend the Niti Aayog meeting scheduled on June 15, “Given the fact that the Niti Ayog has no financial powers and the power to support State Plans, it is fruitless for me to attend the meeting of a body that is bereft of any financial powers.”

Mamata Banerjee has been ostracizing Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the longest time now and the recent Lok Sabha debacle, where she faced severe embarrassment as Modi led BJP glided into her home turf, has only taken the spite a notch higher.

Recently, the Chief Minister of West Bengal had also chosen to skip the Prime Minister’s swearing-in ceremony after family members of BJP workers killed in Bengal violence were invited.

Meanwhile, PM Modi is scheduled to chair the fifth meeting of NITI Aayog’s Governing Council on June 15 to discuss various issues concerning water management, agriculture and security.

Recently, Modi had approved the reconstitution of the governing council of the policy think tank, NITI Aayog, prior to the first meeting after Modi government won a second term last month.

This is, however, not the first time the West Bengal CM has chosen to stay away from the meeting. Last year, Mamata Banerjee did not attend the meeting which was chaired by PM Modi on 16th June 2018 because it was scheduled on Eid-ul-Fitr. She had then said that all festivals are important for her and she does not leave her people on festivals.

Earlier in April 2017, Banerjee and her Delhi counterpart Arvind Kejriwal had skipped the NITI Aayog’s Governing Council meeting. Similarly, in 2015 she skipped the meeting when NITI Aayog’s Governing Council met to discuss various issues including Land Bill.

Unhappy with the doctor’s treatment, Indore man Rafiq Rasheed murders doctor’s wife and injures his son

A person named Rafiq Rasheed, unhappy with the treatment he was receiving, allegedly murdered the wife of his doctor in Indore on Thursday. Rasheed was suffering from a skin disease and was being treated by Dr. Ramkrishna Verma.

The accused went to meet the doctor at his clinic in Malwa Mills area in Indore on Thursday, but the doctor was out of town. Therefore, the doctor’s wife Lata Verma, who helps her husband in the clinic, asked him to come later. Rafiq was not happy with this, and he started arguing with the woman. It soon escalated into a heated exchange which culminated with Rasheed stabbing her with a knife, the Police said. The doctor’s son, Abhishek, who had rushed in to help his mother, was also knifed by the assailant. Lata was declared dead upon arrival at the hospital. Abhishek is believed to be out of danger.

BPS Parihar, Tukoganj city superintendent of police (CSP), told Hindustan Times, “The accused Rafiq Rasheed (45) was suffering from an itchy skin disease for which he was getting treatment from Dr Ramkrishna Verma for the past six months, but without any results. When he went to the clinic at about 11 a.m, Verma’s wife Lata informed him that her husband was in Delhi. This apparently angered Rafiq who got into an altercation with Lata (50) and stabbed her repeatedly with a knife he was carrying. As Lata screamed for help, her son Abhishekh (19) came out and Rafiq stabbed him too and ran away. However, some people who came hearing the screams managed to nab Rafiq and handed him over to the police.”

Rasheed is currently being questioned by the Police. It is also being checked whether he made any attempts to sexually assault the wife seeing that her husband was not present. As per the Police, Rasheed was involved in a murder case in 2015 and was out on bail. According to police, he always carries a knife with him.

Preview: Pakistan vs Sri Lanka – Which Pakistan will turn up?

Just two games in, Pakistan have already shown the entire range of their capabilities in this World Cup. They can collapse for a 100 looking totally clueless against fast bowling, and they can smash 350 the next day and defeat the tournament favourites.

They snapped 11 games losing run in style when they defeated the tournament favourites in a nail-biter encounter and will be looking to build on that against the side they have never lost to in the World Cup.

It must be pleasing for them to see all the batsmen getting runs against England, though they would want one of the top 4 to carry on and score the big hundreds instead of getting out after being set.

The recall of Amir and Wahab at the 11th hour looks like a brilliant decision right now with the 2 experienced men combining to stop Buttler and co at the death against England. With Hafeez and Shoaib Malik looking good with the ball as well, expect the same side to play again against Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka’s World Cup start was very similar to Pakistan, getting blown away by Kiwi quicks and then losing by 10 wickets. They did manage to turn things around and beat Afghanistan in a rain-shortened encounter but it was hardly convincing.

After the excellent start by Kusal Perera and Captain Karunaratne, the middle order suffered an incredible collapse and nearly handed the game back to Afghanistan. Luckily for them, their bowlers did the job and managed to restrict the inexperienced Afghan batsmen to secure a comfortable win in the end.

With a flat pitch expected to go along with the short boundaries in Bristol, a high scoring encounter is expected and Sri Lanka will be hoping their middle order, particularly Mathews, can come back into some form to help them get to a big total.

Key Players:

Pakistan: Fakhar Zaman- Fakhar has been in excellent touch so far in this tournament but hasn’t managed to score a big one, getting out for 22 and 36 in his 2 innings. After playing some really attractive shots, he has thrown his wicket away and Pakistan will be hoping the hard-hitting left hander can capitalise on his good form to get a big score. If Fakhar bats deep, he will put the total well beyond Sri Lankan reach.

Sri Lanka: Angelo Mathews- The most experienced batsman in Sri Lankan line-up but just can’t buy a run at the moment. His horrid start to the tournament has meant the Sri Lankan middle-order has been blown away easily by both New Zealand and Afghanistan. They really need him to step up and anchor the innings and set it up for the big hitters to follow in the lower half.

Pakistan v Sri Lanka in ODIs:

Overall: Matches 153, Pakistan Won 90, Sri Lanka Won 58, Tied 1, No Result 4

World Cup: Matches 7, Pakistan Won 7, Sri Lanka Won 0

Recent Form (most recent first): Pakistan W L L L L, Sri Lanka W L W L L

ICC Rankings: Pakistan (6), Sri Lanka (9)
