Firstpost deletes tweet calling a columnist ‘Sanghi’, but exposes the bias that thrives in newsrooms

0

Columnist Rajeev Mantri was recently served a legal notice by NDTV’s Sreenivasan Jain for sharing three tweets in December 2017 which discussed the conduct of Jain’s father, India’s former ambassador to South Africa and his subsequent recalling.

Last week Mantri shared on Twitter that Sreenivasan Jain and another person named Gopal Jain had served him a legal notice for sharing those tweets, accusing Mantri of defaming Jain’s father, the former ambassador LC Jain.

Rajeev had expressed shock over how Jain can threaten to sue him over a tweet that merely observed some points from a newspaper article written by senior journalist KP Nayar, the link of which he shared as well. He had further shared that he is exploring legal options on how to proceed further considering a powerful journalist like Sreenivasan Jain has chosen to try and gag the voice of a private citizen.

Yesterday, however, following the threats and bullying by Jain, Mantri tweeted that he apologises for his remarks about LC Jain and he has deleted his tweets criticising his actions. Following his apology tweet, web portal Firstpost, through its social media handle called Mantri a ‘Sanghi’, saying that he (Mantri) made Savarkar proud, who, according to Congress President Rahul Gandhi is a ‘traitor’ for sending ‘mercy petitions and clemencies’ to British while he was lodged in the Andaman jail.

Tweet by Firstpost, now deleted

While Firstpost deleted the tweet soon, it shows how the crusaders of freedom of speech are usually the first ones to cheer when a private individual is bullied and threatened into silence. Earlier, too, a celebrity student activist was hailed as a ‘free speech warrior’ who had successfully bullied a bunch of teenagers to delete a Facebook page because they made a harmless meme on her. She was even invited by Congress, ironically, on an ‘anti-bullying’ workshop.

Ironies aside, what is surprising, or rather not so surprising is the fact that Firstpost continued to perpetuate the same platitude about Savarkar that the Leftist historians have been for the longest time. Savarkar is referred to as ‘British Sympathiser’ by the so-called historians usually on the ground of cherry-picking his quotes and taking them out of context and deliberately omitting the numerous statements of his where he has vehemently opposed the British. They claim that Savarkar (who was put in the Andaman jail by the British), wrote letters supporting their Raj in India. However, it is never mentioned how these letters were written under extremely gruesome treatment meted out to him by the British in Andaman jail, more famously known as ‘Kaala Paani’.

Savarkar had spent six months in solitary confinement, minus any form of human interaction. He was made to pound coir with his bare hands where his hands were often dripped with blood. He had to manually turn a massive wheel, that would squeeze coconuts for oil and had to produce about 30 pounds a day. While this punishment was only given to those who were “not behaving with the guards”, Savarkar was often made to do it despite his good conduct. Left all alone, he scraped poems on the prison walls: “The soul that suffers get stronger. The aim is freedom of the motherland”. In order to torment him, the guards whitewashed the walls one which he scraped poems. Having to go through life all alone, being allowed to write letters once in a year and a half, to his loved ones and going through tremendous physical and mental torture in a compressed cell.

Hence, what Firstpost did today, was not just a mistake. They quietly deleted the tweet without giving any explanation or apology. Firstpost tried to demean Mantri by saying how Savarkar, who had asked for mercy from British (instead of showing willingness to die for the country like the leaders Congress boasts of siding with), was a coward and so was Mantri. But applying their own logic, if Savarkar did ask the British for mercy, which according to the so-called liberals is very unbecoming of a freedom fighter, does it mean that Sreenivasan Jain is like the British, who carried out atrocities on Indians? Perhaps they are right. Perhaps, like British tortured Savarkar to ‘beg for’ clemency, NDTV’s Sreenivasan, too, bullied and threatened someone who merely stated what was reported by another media house, to ‘apologise’.

Perhaps the flagbearers of freedom of speech only like to speak their minds, but don’t like to listen to what is on others’ minds.

Muslim man beaten up in mosque for participating in Kanwar Yatra and offering water to Lord Shiva

0

A Muslim man in the Baghpat village in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, was allegedly beaten up at a local mosque by the community after he participated in the ongoing Kanwar Yatra and offered water to Lord Shiva. Babu Khan had brought back Ganga water in the Kanwar which irked the community. As per reports, after he returned on last Thursday, a section of his community turned against him and when he reached the mosque to offer Friday namaz, he was allegedly abused, attacked, beaten up and driven away. As per Times of India, Khan said he wanted to experience what strenuous journey the Kanwars undertake. He said he offered water to Lord Shiva from the river Ganga, but he is still a devout Muslim.

Khan claims that he was asked to go and ‘ring bells in a temple’ for participating in the Kanwar Yatra. He said that if people from his community continue harassing him like this, he would convert from Islam. He said that since last three years Lord Shiva would come in his thoughts and he would even pray to Shiva. Along with this, he continued following Islam and carrying out his duties as a Muslim. He said he was welcomed by the villagers when he came back from his Kanwar Yatra and offered some water in the temple of the village on his return. However, when he went to the mosque on Friday, some men present there allegedly beat him up.

This is not the first time a Muslim man was harassed for participating in a Kanwar Yatra. In 2016, a Muslim youth named Vakil from Bhainswal village in Uttar Pradesh was harassed and threatened for participating in Kanwar Yatra and bringing back water from the Ganga in the Kanwad. In fact, as per reports, he and his family were kicked out of their homes for him participating in the Yatra.

The police is currently investigating the incident.

Mamata Banerjee has picked up her pen to combat ‘saffron terror’ : TMC mouthpiece

0

Mamata Banerjee has become one of the prominent faces of the united opposition that has come together to defeat Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Continuing her attack on the BJP, the chief minister of West Bengal has written a poem in her party’s mouthpiece “Jaggo Bangla” with the headline that suggests the chief minister has ‘picked up her pen to combat saffron terror.’

The weekly publication promotes the ideas of the TMC wherein last few of their weekly issues have focused entirely on the BJP and equating them with a religious pariah. TMC mouthpiece’s ire seems to have gone up since considerable surge of vote share in favour of the BJP in the recently concluded panchayat elections, which were clouded with violence.

In the latest issue, Mamata has penned two poems. One is titled ‘Identity’ and the other one is titled ‘Untouchable’ both are directed towards the recent National Register of Citizens (NRC) uproar. The idea of saffron terror and its propagators have all been debunked over time and their theories clinically dissected and proven to be falsehoods. Mamata Banerjee, however, seems to disagree.

The second poem that the chief minister has penned down raises several questions especially since it’s been printed on the party mouthpiece.

The entire poem penned by Mamata is reproduced below.

“Do you want to go to China?
No Comments please.
Political Diplomacy cancelled it.
Want to visit Chicago?
To commemorate 125 years of
Swami Vivekananda’s address?
Religious monopoly shut down the door.
Accepted the invitation of St. Stephen’s College?
Not allowed friend.
See the class struggle.
Want to protest for Indian citizens in Assam?
Yor are anti-national.
Fortunately you were born in West Bengal,
Otherwise you would have been called
Intruders.
Fair enough, friends,
Fine touch,
You are untouchable.”

“Fortunately you were born in West Bengal, Otherwise you would have been called Intruders. Fair enough, friends, Fine touch, You are untouchable.”

If one notices the insinuation here, it seems that Mamata is hinting at and subversively equating “illegal” with “untouchables”. And the phrase ”fortunately you were born in Bengal” seems to suggest that the only people who are born in Bengal are sensible and lucky enough to understand and embrace inclusivity.

The NRC issue has seen a split in the political spectrum. While the BJP has supported the NRC wholeheartedly, Congress and its allies have not. Owing to their rhetoric on NRC, 2 TMC politicians from Assam had also quit the party.

Jyotiraditya Scindia furthers half truth about India’s forex reserves, gets fact-checked

0

Congress leader Jyotiraditya Scindia yesterday took to Twitter saying that India’s forex reserves have fallen to an over 7 month low at $402.7bn (Aug 3), having dipped $1.49bn over just July’s last week. He furthered his agenda by saying that with rising trade deficit and crude oil prices, the worsening situation of the Indian economy at hands of current government is evident.

Quite intelligently though, he substantiated his comment referring to an article reported by The Indianexpress, which read that ‘India’s foreign exchange reserves fell to over 7-month low of $402.7 billion in the week ended August 3’. But surely Jyotiraditya Scindia in his haste to belittle the government forgot to read that the article also mentioned the fact that India’s forex reserves have hit an all-time high of $426.08 billion in the week to April 13.

Nevertheless, Twitter users were prompt in fact-checking the Congress leader, not leaving this opportunity though, to poke fun at the Congress party. Twitter user Spaminder Bharti was quick to identify that the Indian Forex reserves were higher still by around 30% since the BJP gained power, outflanking the Congress in 2014.

An analysis of RBI data shows that India’s foreign exchange reserves have grown by $63 billion between May 24, 2014, when Narendra Modi was sworn in as Prime Minister, and May 5, 2017, handsomely outstripping the $52 billion increase between May 22, 2009, and May 23, 2014, under the rule of UPA Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Jyotiraditya Scindia, the Madhya Pradesh Congress leader, is no stranger to controversies. Not long back, the self-styled Janeudhari President Rahul Gandhi’s close aide, Scindia had stirred a controversy after a video had gone viral where he was seen throwing away a coconut which was given to him by his party workers.

Ahead of the Madhya Pradesh state elections, despite Congress trying hard to project a united front against the incumbent BJP, it was reported that all is not well in the party with Scindia getting into a poster war with another Congress bigwig, Kamal Nath, who had recently written a letter to Lord Shiva to help MP defeat BJP.

Another video had surfaced earlier where Scindia seemed to be unhappy about a woman Congress member sharing the stage with him and asks her to step down created enough ripples to embarrass the Congress party ahead of the state elections in Madhya Pradesh.

IT Department claims Rahul Gandhi did not disclose he was director of Young India: Reports

0

According to a Times Now report, the Income Tax Department has claimed that Congress President Rahul Gandhi hid the fact that he was the co-director of Young India.

The tax files assessed by Times Now states, “It was observed that even though the assessee, Shri Rahul Gandhi, had shares of Young India and also was one of its directors, yet in the statement of assets and liabilities as on 31st of March, 2011, furnished by the assessee during the course of assessment proceedings of the relevant assessment year, i.e. assessment year 2011-12, his ownership of assets of Young India by the assessee was not disclosed by the assessee.”

The Income Tax Department has also stated that Rahul Gandhi declared his income to be just over Rs. 68 lakhs 14 thousand which was from housing properties but after subsequent investigation by a team of the investigation wing, it was discovered that he was a director of Young India which had purchased 99.1% shares of Associate Journals Private Limited (AJL). The Income Tax Department, therefore, suspected that Rahul Gandhi failed to declare a significant chunk of his income.

Republic TV has also accessed IT Notices sent to the Congress President from 2011 to 2018. In one of the notices,  it is said, “I have reasons to believe that your income chargeable to tax of the assessment year of 2011 and 2012 has escaped assessment within the meaning of Section 147 of the Income Tax Act. I, therefore, propose to assess or reassess the income or loss for the said assessment year. I, hereby, require you to deliver to me within 30 days from the service of the notice…”

Young India is at the heart of the National Herald case. Recently, Rahul Gandhi had approached the Court to stay the Income Tax proceedings against him and obtain an order to prevent the media from reporting on it. However, his requests were declined by the Court. The crux of the National Herald case revolves around the allegation that the Gandhis acquired property worth millions and millions of rupees after Young India acquired Associate Journals Limited (AJL), which published the Congress mouthpiece, National Herald, through fraudulent means.

Khudiram Bose – A tale of youth and sacrifice

0

It is certainly difficult to comprehend the colossal impact Bengal had in India’s freedom movement looking at the current state of the aforementioned state. The idea of independence and the will to execute, both were present and partly originated from British India’s ‘Bengal Presidency’. Today is the birth anniversary of one of the younger David’s who stood up to the British Goliath. The luminary who is being referred to here is Khudiram Bose.

Early life & family lineage

Bose, a son to the Nerajol’s ‘Tahsildar’ Trailokyanath Bose and his religious wife Lakshmipriya Devi, was born on 3rd December 1889 in Midnapore District’s Habibpur village, West Bengal. It is believed that it was his mother who instilled a great sense of ‘karma’ in him by reciting religious scriptures to the young boy every day.

Khudiram was only six years old when he lost his mother, his father died a year later. He was raised by his elder sister, Apurba Roy. Apurba’s husband, Amritlal Roy got Khudiram admitted to Tamluk’s Hamilton High school. It was during those days Khudiram got inspired by public lectures given by Sri Aurobindo the founder of ‘Anushilon Samiti’. Anushilon Samiti was an organization which believed armed struggle is the only way to uproot the British from Bengal.

Khudiram joined the nationalist organization and became a volunteer at the tender age of 15. This statement alone cannot do justice to the magnanimity of this act, a contemporary analysis might help, at the same age when people are most concerned with the new look of an actor or a new toy, Khudiram volunteered to sacrifice his innocence and his future for the idea of an independent India.

He was arrested for distributing anti-British pamphlets at the age of sixteen. During this time period, Khudiram got involved with planting bombs near British police stations and targeting government officials of the colonial government. He joined up with the network of renowned revolutionary Barindra Kumar Ghosh, who was based out of Calcutta.

Douglas Kingsford and Jugantor

Jugantar was the mouthpiece of Anushilan Samiti. This newspaper talked about nationalism and spread ideas of resistance against the colonial exploitation. Expectedly, Jugantar came under a lot of scrutinies and many charges were brought against the paper and its editors. Douglas Kingsford was at that point in time was serving as the Chief Magistrate of the presidency court of Alipore. He oversaw the trails of notable editor Bhupendranath Dutta and other key contributors to the Jugantar publication.

Jugantar despite facing the wrath of the colonial government did not tone down its defiant editorials and as a result, it faced five more prosecutions which left it in financial ruin in 1908. Kingsford had earned notoriety during his tenure as the magistrate by handing out cruel and unjust sentences to young political workers. He even ordered ‘public whipping’ of people participating in peaceful protests.

Such a heavy-handed approach was indicative of the colonial perception of Indian masses and the underline idea of treating Indians not as humans but ‘subjects’. Anushilan Samiti took note of this atrocious ruling precedence set by Kingsford and designated him as the next target.

Muzaffarpur- the plot that shook the colonial foundations

After the initial failed assassination attempt by Hem Chandra Das, Anushilon Samiti persisted in their efforts to neutralize Kingsford. What followed would become one of the greatest tales of bravery and Indian freedom struggle ever told.

In April 1908, Samiti sent a two-man reconnaissance team to Muzaffarpur. The two men were Prafulla Chaki along with Khudiram Bose. The police got suspicious of the activities of Barin Ghosh. Calcutta Police also got the alert that Kingsford life is in danger and the same was forwarded to the Superintendent of Muzaffarpur.

The two men adopted pseudo names to hide their true identities. Prafulla Chaki became “Dinesh Chandra Roy” and Khudiram became “Haren Sarkar”. The duo stayed at a Dharmashala and for the next few days they shadowed Kingsford’s every move and took note of his court timings, his arrival, and departure from his favourite club situated right on the opposite of Muzaffarpur park as well as his home.

These men were so successful at hiding their identities and movement that The CID officer sent from Kolkata to follow them had returned with a letter from Armstrong, the superintendent of Muzaffarpur Police claiming that the duo had not arrived in Muzaffarpur at all, six hours before the freedom fighters struck.

On 30th April 1908, Prafulla Chaki and Khudiram Bose were hiding in the trees waiting patiently for Kingsford’s carriage to pass them by. At that eventful night, Kingsford’s carriage was immediately behind a very similar looking carriage boarded by the wife and daughter of Pringle Kennedy, a leading pleader of Muzaffarpur Bar.

On their way back home at around 8.30 p.m the ladies took a turn to the right to leave the club grounds and pass in front of the compound of Kingsford. It was a dark night, visibility was poor. As the single-horse drawn carriage made its way to the eastern gate of Kingsford’s compound two men ran towards the carriage and threw bombs at it, mistaking it as the Magistrate’s carriage. There was a tremendous explosion and later the shattered cabin of the carriage was discovered along with the ladies who had sustained serious injuries.

Miss Kennedy, the daughter died of her injuries within hours and Mrs Kennedy survived until the morning of 2nd May, she also succumbed to her injuries that morning.

Foiled escape plan

The incident occurred before 9 PM and by midnight the entire town knew what had happened. The police were keeping a close eye on everyone coming in or going out from the adjacent roads and rail stations. Khudiram decided not to board a train and continued walking along the countryside. He walked all night covering nearly 25 miles. Exhausted, Khudiram reached a station called “Waini” on the morning of 1st May 1908. As he was asking for a glass of water, two constables confronted him as his lack of footwear and perspiring appearance raised suspicion. After a couple of questions, they found inconsistencies in the young teenager’s answers. They decided to arrest Khudiram but he resisted, during this time one of his revolvers fall out and his fate was sealed. Police recovered 37 rounds of ammunition, Rs. 30 in cash, a railway map and a page of the rail timetable. He was brought to Muzaffarpur station on the following day, May 2nd, 1908. The English daily Statesman described the scene as such –

“The Railway station was crowded to see the boy. A mere boy of 18 or 19 years old, who looked quite determined. He came out of a first-class compartment and walked all the way to the phaeton, kept for him outside, like a cheerful boy who knows no anxiety…..on taking his seat the boy lustily cried ‘Vandemataram’.”

Court trail and hanging

The trail started on 21st May 1908. Mr Mannuk and Binod Bihari Majumder became the prosecutors for the British governments. Kshetranath Bandopadhyay, Kalidas Basu, Upendranath Sen defended Khudiram in the court of law they were later joined by Satish Chandra Chakraborty and Nagendra Lal Lahiri. It is worth mentioning that all of Khudiram’s defence lawyers were providing their services for free.

On 13th June, the scheduled date for verdict and sentencing, the judge and the prosecutors got an anonymous letter threatening that there is a bomb coming their way and this time it will be from Biharis and not Bengalees. This excited the defence as they thought this was indicative of the possibility of there being other masterminds and executors of Muzaffarpur but the judge pronounced the death sentence to Khudiram.

High Courts Verdict on Khudiram’s appeal

Khudiram had seven days to appeal against the verdict and he was reluctant to do so but eventually, he did after his lawyers pleaded him to do so. The appeal was dismissed and the previous verdict was upheld by two British judges in the High court on 13th July 1908.

As a last-ditch effort, an appeal was made to the Governor General to overrule the death sentence of Khudiram but the appeal was turned down. An order came out to execute the death sentence on 11th August 1908. On the date of his hanging his age was 18 years and 8 months.

The streets of Kolkata erupted in student protest but to no avail. Mahatma Gandhi never stood by Khudiram Bose and stated –

“That the Indian people will not win their freedom through these methods.”

As we look back to the good deeds and great valour of this young martyr and a worthy son of Mother India, the youth of India can learn much from him. Let his idea of self-emancipation and discipline guide our lives which are otherwise riddled with lack of conviction and purpose.

NDTV’s Sreenivasan Jain pulls a Barkha : Threatens and bullies columnist into deleting tweets

0

Columnist Rajeev Mantri was recently served a legal notice by NDTV’s Sreenivasan Jain for sharing 3 Tweets in 2017 that discussed the conduct of Jain’s father, India’s former ambassador to South Africa and his subsequent recalling.

Last week Mantri had shared on Twitter that he had received a legal notice from Sreenivasan Jain and another person named Gopal Jain for sharing those three Tweets, alleging that Mantri had defamed Jain’s father, the former ambassador LC Jain.

Rajeev had expressed shock over how Jain can threaten to sue him over a Tweet that merely observed some points from a newspaper article written by senior journalist KP Nayar. He had further shared that he is exploring legal options on how to proceed and had wondered how a powerful and vocal Journalist like Sreenivasan Jain is trying to gag a common citizen.

Today, however, Mantri has shared a Tweet declaring that he apologises for his remarks about LC Jain and he has deleted his Tweets criticising his actions.

Sreenivasan Jain’s legal threat to Mantri was criticised by many and now Mantri’s deleted Tweet is also raising concerns on how powerful journalists like Jain, who are all vocal about freedom of expression and ‘speaking truth to power’ easily take offence when questions were raised on people related to them.

Sadly, Mantri’s apology is not a stray incident. Journalist Barkha Dutt had in the past hounded and destroyed the career of a young journalist Chaitanya Kunte who had dared to question her.

Mantri’s Tweets had shared an article from Telegraph India, which discussed how former ambassador to South Africa LC Jain was recalled by the Vajpayee government after his actions reportedly hampered India’s image at an international level. After the Pokhran nuclear tests, South Africa wanted to use the NAM to take a stand against India’s nuclear power status and LC Jain had reportedly helped South Africa against India.

With all due respect, please spare us your history lesson, Dalai Lama

0

It’s such a humbug from the 14th Dalai Lama to suggest that the 1947 Partition could’ve been avoided had Pt Jawaharlal Nehru accepted Mahatma Gandhi’s offer to Make Mohammad Ali Jinnah as Prime Minister, the offer which was made to Viceroy Lord Mountbatten on April 1, 1947.

Gandhi’s offer to Jinnah was a non-starter from the word go. Gandhi had made such proposals previously too, and it had been rejected by the Muslim League and Jinnah himself. There is no reason to believe Jinnah would’ve accepted so on this occasion. Nehru only saved him the trouble.

Why would Jinnah’ve brushed aside the offer? Because the Central Legislative Assembly would’ve still been dominated by Congress members who would’ve rendered his Prime Ministership impossible. Besides, how would’ve Jinnah looked to his supporters and Muslim League after harping “Pakistan-and-nothing-else,” all these years?

Look at the issue from the Congress’ perspective. It still, by far, was the largest nationalist party, representing a majority of Indians, including Muslims. Forget Hindus, how Congress would’ve appeared to millions of nationalist Muslims still on their side? What was the guarantee that Jinnah would’ve stopped at his original demand of six states only? (Punjab, Bengal, Sylhet, Sind, Balochistan and NWFP). And what about one-third of India which was still run “independently” by hundreds of princes and their fiefdoms?

Above everything else, nobody believed Gandhi was serious about his offer. This is what Lord Mountbatten has written in his memoirs on the offer:

“I (Mountbatten) need not say that this solution coming at this time staggered me. I asked: “What would Mr Jinnah say to such a proposal”? The reply was, “if you tell him I am the author, he will reply “Wily Gandhi.”

Still, Lord Mountbatten did put Gandhi’s proposal to Pt. Nehru. The latter pointed out that Gandhi had made a similar proposal during the Cabinet Mission of 1946. The proposal was all the less realistic a year hence now because of the policy of Direct Action by the Muslim League which has caused bloodshed and bitterness.  Nehru also wondered if Sikhs and Hindus in districts of Punjab where they dominated, would accept the proposal.

As per VP Menon, the Constitutional Advisor to the Viceroy (know more about him, he is the one who actually solved the knotty Partition issue), “the assurance of cooperation by the Congress (to Gandhi’s proposal on Jinnah) is more a wishful thinking…this is perhaps not un-intended by Gandhi.

“According to Gandhi’s proposal, Jinnah is at liberty to plan for Pakistan and even to put his plans into effect provided he is successful in appealing to reason and does not use force. This is asking for the impossible.

“If Jinnah could persuade the Sikhs and Hindus of the Punjab and Hindus of Bengal to join Pakistan, he would automatically get his Pakistan without joining the Interim Government on dubious terms. On the other hand, if Jinnah still persists in his scheme of separation, he will be giving his case away by entering the Central Government.

“It is Gandhi’s habit to make propositions, leaving many of their implications unsaid…for example, there is no reference here to the Muslim League participation in the Constituent Assembly. If Jinnah were to accept his proposal, Gandhi probably takes it for granted that the Muslim League would enter the Constituent Assembly.”

So, His Holiness, please spare us the false history. As it is we have many historians of dubious claims and agendas who manipulate the truth. Yours’ might be an innocent one but no less grievous.

Illegal Immigration and Hindu rights: Amit Shah’s scathing attack against Mamata in a clarion call for 2019

0

Kolkata witnessed an unprecedented show of strength by the Bharatiya Janata Party on the death anniversary of the legendary freedom fighter from Bengal, Khudiram Bose, on Saturday the 11th. Hundreds and thousands of people clad in saffron gathered at Mayo Road to hear the President of the BJP, Amit Shah, speak at the Yuva Swabhiman Samavesh Rally.

After paying due respect to the heroes of Bengal and Khudiram Bose in particular, Amit Shah launched a frontal attack on the Chief Minister of West Bengal. Mamata Banerjee had declared support for the illegal immigrants in Assam and suggested that any move to expel them may lead to civil war. Amit Shah responded to Mamata today by asking the crowd of supporters, “Shouldn’t Bangladeshi illegal immigrants be thrown out?” Mamata Banerjee has been coming across as increasingly agitated of late and the BJP appears to have sensed weakness in one of its most virulent opponents.

Amit Shah was scathing in his attacks as he urged the crowd that had gathered on several occasions to uproot the Trinamool Congress from power in the coming elections. He accused Mamata of caring more for her vote bank than for national interests. Amit Shah also suggested that the signals of local Bengali channels were being tampered with to prevent people from watching the BJP rally.

BJP President Amit Shah also targeted the Mamata-Rahul Gandhi alliance that appears to be taking shape. On the NRC issue, he suggested that Mamata should explain why she is protecting illegal immigrants and questioned Rahul Gandhi for not clarifying his stand on the issue.

Amit Shah also mentioned the ban on immersion of murthis of Maa Durga by the West Bengal government on Vijaya Dashami as the dates clashed with Muharram. He then assured if the BJP comes to power, people will have complete freedom to practice their religious faith. Amit Shah attacked the Chief Minister on a variety of other issues, from the deteriorating law and order situation to corruption, and highlighted the achievements of the Narendra Modi government at the Center.

From Amit Shah’s speech, it is clear that the BJP’s main agenda for West Bengal will be the illegal infiltration into the state by Bangladeshis and Mamata Banerjee’s soft approach towards and the infringement of the religious rights of Hindus and the persecution they suffer in certain areas of the state. At a time when Mamata Banerjee was being furthered as one of the Prime Ministerial candidates for a Mahagathbandhan of opposition parties to defeat the BJP in 2019, the saffron party has responded by laying siege to her own state.

The most significant statement by the President of the BJP that is sure to make Trinamool Congress very nervous was when he invoked Shyama Prasad Mookherjee and Rabindranath Tagore to raise the clarion call for the battle for 2019. He said, “BJP is ruling in 19 states. But I believe that victory in these states is meaningless until we win over the place of Syama Prasad Mukherjee and Rabindranath Tagore. Let us give a chance to Narendra Modi.”

It appears very possible that not only will Mamata Banerjee not be the Prime Ministerial candidate come 2019, but also she will be facing a very real possibility of BJP winning substantial Lok Sabha seats in West Bengal.

Uttar Pradesh: Minor girl raped and abandoned, accused Salim and Zafar arrested

0

Child sex crime has become a major scourge with various media houses reporting such news week after week. In one such shocking case reported by Amarujala, two youths belonging to the Muslim community raped a 12-year-old minor girl. The incident occurred in Rohta village in Meerut Tehsil, Uttar Pradesh, where two youths named Salim (26) and Zafar (22), lured a minor girl living in their neighbourhood, who had visited a grocery shop nearby, into a deserted house where they raped her and later fled, leaving her wounded.

As confirmed by police inspector Subhash Atri, the victim’s father suspecting something odd had filed a missing complaint with the police, soon after which the girl managed to somehow escape and return home. The minor narrated what had happened to her parents, which led them to immediately approach the police. Soon after, the police launched a man-hunt and subsequently managed to arrest the two accused in Kanker Khera district.

The police later confirmed that the accused after being arrested were sent for medical examination to CHC hospital which later in its report settled that the two accused were involved in raping the minor girl.

This is, however, one of the many cases which have emerged in the recent past. Apart from the heinous ‘Kathua rape incident’ and the ‘Mandsaur incident‘ which shook the nation, several such cases have been reported. Few of these incidents are listed below:

14th July 2018: The Hindu had reported of a 16-year-old girl who was allegedly raped by her boyfriend on the pretext of marriage in Shahdara’s Seemapuri area. The accused who had been arrested was identified as Chand Alam.

14th April 2018: The minor daughter of a riot-affected family was abducted on gunpoint and gang-raped in a Kairana village by 4 youth – Arif, Firoz, Saddam and Raees, Navbharat Times has reported.

24th March 2018: The Hindu reported of a minor who died in Assam’s Nagaon district after she was gang-raped by three – two of them juveniles – and set on fire. The police said the accused – Jakir Hussain, 21, and the two juveniles belonging to the same village of the victim, raped the girl when she was alone at home, doused her with kerosene and set her on fire.

17th January 2018: According to News18, a cleric identified as Maulavi Saber Farooqui, in a Nanded, Aurangabad, madrasa had allegedly raped a 12-year-old girl and molested another minor. The alleged incident occurred at Islamia Arabia seminary located in Deglur Naka area of Nanded where Farooqui allegedly raped the 12-year-old girl after showing her a pornographic clip on his mobile phone and molested another girl (8).

24th December 2017: Yet another shocking case of a minor 8-year-old girl being sexually abused since August by a gang of 6, including 19-year-old Muslim youth Mustafa Abdul Rajaq Mujawar, had come to light from Pune’s Kondhwa area, as reported by Hindu Post.
