Indian Railways decides to reserve 50 percent posts for women in Railway Protection Force

0

In a big step towards ensuring the safety of women passengers, the government has decided to reserve 50 percent seats for women in the upcoming Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel recruitment.

Speaking at an event in Patna, Union Railway minister Piyush Goyal announced that the 50 percent reservation for women will result in almost 5,000 jobs for women in RPF. The Indian Railways has issued notifications to recruit 10,000 RPF personnel.

Indian Railways, being one of the biggest employers in the world, has more than one lakh female staff and the numbers are continuously increasing. Recently, the Indian Railways has dedicated Mathunga Railway station of Mumbai, as the first all-women staffed railway station. While Matunga is a suburban station for local trains in Mumbai, Gandhinagar in Jaipur became the first main-line station to be managed by an all-female staff.

Apart from the RPF vacancies, the Indian Railways has announced vacancies for about 1.25 lakh posts in different categories. The Union Minister also announced that all the 6000 railways stations across the country and the important trains like Rajdhani and Shatabdi will be installed with CCTV and other security measures.

He also laid foundation stones and inaugurated various railway facilities at different functions held in Patna and Ara on Sunday. He laid foundations for electrification of the 97km long Ara-Sasaram rail line.

Railway Protection Force is the premier police organisation of the country, entrusted with protecting railway passengers, passenger area and railway property of the Indian Railways. It has one of the biggest workforces in the country consisting of more than 1.75 lakh active personnel.

The NDA government has invested a lot of resources in restructuring the Indian infrastructure sector. It is stated that the Modi Government is planning to dedicate Rs 1.5 lakh crore to infrastructure projects in the country by next year.

The Indian Railways also seem to be heading in the right direction under the present government. The government has been successful in taking Indian Railways not only to the North-Eastern states but also in the erstwhile Maoist region of Dantewada. The Indian Railways has plans to invest more than Rs. 40,000 crore in infrastructure development in the North East states.

Somnath Chatterjee passes away at 89 : Read about the former Lok Sabha Speaker

0

Following a heart attack on Sunday morning, Somnath Chatterjee, former Lok Sabha speaker, passed away today morning. He was on life support and was stable and undergoing dialysis. However, he could not recover and breathed his last on 13th August. He was suffering from a kidney-related ailment and was admitted to the hospital. He was earlier admitted to the hospital for 40 days and had suffered a haemorrhagic stroke.

Born on 25th July 1929 in Tezpur, Assam, he was educated in Kolkata as well as in Cambridge and was invited to the bar from the Middle Temple in London before he took up legal practice as an advocate in Calcutta High Court. While his father, Nirmal Chandra Chatterjee was one of the founders of the right-wing Hindu nationalist political party, Akhil Bharatiya Hindu Mahasabha, Somnath Chatterjee was a member of Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] from 1968 to 2008. He became a Member of Parliament in 1971 as an independent candidate supported by the CPI(M).

Chatterjee was re-elected nine times to the Lok Sabha except for the one time in 1984 when he lost to Mamata Banerjee, which she fought on the seat of Congress. From 1989 to 2004 he was the leader of CPI(M) in the Lok Sabha. Following the 2004 election, he was appointed pro tem speaker and eventually on 4th June 2004, he was unanimously elected as the Speaker of the Lower House.

Around mid-2008, CPI(M) withdrew its support from the first term of Congress-led UPA government, Chatterjee’s name was included in the list of MPs withdrawing support even though as a Speaker, Chatterjee had a non-partisan position in the House. During the no-confidence motion in July 2008, Chatterjee did not vote against the government, despite the party line, because voting against the government would mean voting in favour of the Opposition, then led by BJP-led NDA. However, Chatterjee was later expelled from CPI(M) for violation of party discipline.

Saddened by the expulsion, he announced in August 2008 that he would retire from politics from the 2009 general election onward.

Chatterjee is survived by his wife and three children, one son and two daughters.

Read why people are asking Hindustan Times if they are upset about a pro-Khalistan rally being disrupted

UK-based separatist group Sikhs for Justice had organised an event to call for the so-called ‘referendum’ for the separation Punjab from India at London’s Trafalgar Square. According to reports, some pro-Khalistani groups and individuals had gathered there to hold the ‘London Declaration’ for the referendum in 2020. However, many Indians also gathered to hold a counter-protest and displayed their open support for India’s sovereignty. Pakistani born Nazir Ahmed was one of the foremost speakers in this “event”. He has a long history of stoking tension against India.

According to reports, many Indian-origin people came out to support India and seen opposing the event was backed by Pakistan’s ISI. In India, the Shiromani Akali Dal has stated that the number of Indian Sikhs participating in the pro-Khalistan event is minuscule and Sikhs are loyal Indians.

While the fervour of Indians abroad was being discussed, Hindustan Times decided to take a completely different route.  Though HT has mentioned in their article that the pro-Khalistan side was backed by Pakistan and includes that Pakistan-born openly anti-India politician Nazir Ahmed was one of the speakers at the event, its Tweet sharing the article branded Indians opposing Khalistani slogans as ‘Modi Supporters’.

Tweet by Hindustan Times

HT’s branding of Indians opposing Khalistani separatists as ‘Modi Supporters’ is being questioned on social media.

Veteran journalist Kanchan Gupta said that pro-India group took on the pro-Khalistan group. He quipped that Hindustan Times seems to have misspelt pro-India as pro-Modi and the tone is accusatory. He also said that whoever handles the Hindustan Times social media account seems enraged that a pro-Khalistan rally was disrupted.

Other commentators too found the tone of the tweet accusatory.

Others wondered if opposing Khalistan is a ‘pro-Modi thing’ now.

Many Sikhs and other people of Indian origin had planned the event as ‘We Stand With India‘ and have expressed that the Sikh community stands firm in support of India.

Chairman of British Sikh Association Dr Rami Ranger had reportedly dismissed the event organisers as ‘a handful of unelected and self-appointed Sikhs’.

Pro-Khalistan voices have found a ground in the UK even before. During the Republic Day event in the Indian High Commission in London this year, Pakistani born British politician Nazir Ahmed had instigated pro-Khalistan and anti-Indian protests. During that event too, Indian origin people had gathered to oppose anti-Indian elements and there were even clashes reported between the two groups. At that time, the anti-Indian gathering was backed by Pakistan born British politician Nazir Ahmed. Separatist groups supported by Pakistan had indulged in anti-India sloganeering and held events during PM Modi’s UK visit in April this year too.

Uttar Pradesh: Police arrested man for stealing idols and valuables from Shanidev temple

0

Yet another case of antique theft was reported in Sultanpur district Uttar Pradesh on Saturday. A man named Salim called the police and informed that a local thief, of Muslim origin, was seen running away with three silver mukuts (crowns), one idol made of Astha-Dhatu (a combination of eight metals including gold and silver), two copper idols, the donation box and the temple bell from the Shanidev temple in Sultanpur- Sabzi Mandi district, Uttar Pradesh.

Soon after a 200-meter chase, PVR 2820, caught the miscreant and handed over the valuables to the police.

India’s rich cultural heritage is at a constant threat as cases of illegal antique trafficking is gaining strength. This exploitation continues unabated despite the existence of The Antiquities and Art Treasures Act, 1972 whose aim is to protect “antiquities,” an omnibus term that includes, among other items, sculptures in stone, shrines, terracotta, metals, jewelry, ivory, paintings in paper, wood, cloth, skin, and manuscripts over a hundred years old.

In one such incident reported in 2016, a big episode of theft occurred in ‘Dev Bhumi’ Kullu in Himachal Pradesh from where one of the priceless idols of Lord Raghunath along with the idol of Lord Hanuman, 10 kg of silver ornaments and 1 kg of gold ornaments were stolen from a famous temple Raghunathpura, Kullu.

Earlier this year Opindia had reported how, Ashton Sequeira, an NSUI leader (District Secretary) was arrested along 5 others for stealing and attempting to sell antiquated idols of Jain Tirthankaras worth crores of rupees.

History is witness to the fact that from time to time most of our antiquities and important documents were taken away by the foreign rulers and invaders from our temples, monuments etc. Many of them are still lying in various museums in many countries. A few months back, the British Museum on Twitter had uploaded an image of an Indian sandstone sculpture displayed in their Museum which attracted a lot of resentment from Indians demanding it to be returned back as it is part of Indian heritage.

It’s time that we regard theft of Antiquities not merely as a cultural theft, which is a huge issue in itself, but also a civilizational threat and a threat to the very existence of our nation.

Earlier in 2016, as a part of ‘Operation Hidden Idol,’ raids and seizures were made at the Asia Art Week in New York which sought to curb the flow of smuggled cultural products into New York.

Prime Minister of Modi is the first Indian head of government to demand stolen Indian heritage from the U.S, Canada, Germany, and other countries.

Rahul caught on camera winking again, this time at a rally in Rajasthan

0

The Congress party had not yet recovered from its President’s hug-and-wink gimmick inside the Parliament which was resoundingly condemned by everyone across the political spectrum as extremely juvenile and immature. But Rahul Gandhi has gone ahead and done it again. He was caught on camera winking at Sachin Pilot at a rally just before the latter went ahead and hugged AICC general secretary and former chief minister Ashok Gehlot on the stage.

Rahul Gandhi winking at Sachin Pilot

Rahul Gandhi was accused of disrespecting the National Anthem at the same rally by the National IT in charge of BJP, Amit Malviya, where the Congress President could be seen joking while the National Anthem was being sung.

Rahul Gandhi has committed several goof-ups in recent times. Recently, at a rally, he criticized the government for not buying cellphones from Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL). He suffered severe mockery from Twitter users as well as BJP leaders over his latest gaffe.

With the state assembly elections coming up in Rajasthan, the noises coming from the Rajasthan unit of the Congress party haven’t been all too positive despite what Rahul Gandhi’s jocular demeanour might suggest. There are reports of rifts within the party over its Chief Ministerial candidate for the upcoming elections. Amidst all this, the Congress’ prime ministerial candidate for 2019 does not really seem to be helping the party with his juvenile behaviour.

NIA arrests two suspected terrorists with links to ISIS in Hyderabad

0

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) apprehended two men from Hyderabad in connection with a conspiracy to carry out terrorist activities in the country. This arrest is a result of NIA raiding seven different places in the city on 6th August which were carried out to further the investigation for the 2016 ISIS terror module bust.

The arrested persons are identified by the authorities as Mohammed Abdullah Basith, a 24-year-old from Hafeezbaba Nagar and Mohammed Abdul Qhadeer, a 19-year-old from Chandrayangutta area.

According to NIA, these two men were in contact with Adnan Hassan, the main accused of the 2016 terror module case and is currently facing trial. NIA released a press statement regarding the arrests made. It stated –

“During further investigation, a fresh input was received from reliable sources that one Abdul Basith, a resident of Hyderabad, who was connected with accused Adnan Hassan and some of his associates are in regular touch with each other and conspiring to further the activities of ISIS, a proscribed terrorist organization in India.”

The officials also stated that they have recovered and seized a lot of incriminating material and sent the same to CFSL Hyderabad for analysis and data extraction.

Adnan with whom the recently arrested Abdullah Basith was keeping regular contact was arrested by the NIA in 2016. NIA registered a case against Adnan and two of his associates Sheikh Azhar ul Islam and Mohammed Farhan Shaikh on January 28, 2016, for allegedly being members of the ISIS terror group and their alleged involvement with the conspiracy to identify, motivate, radicalize and recruit Indian Muslim youth on behalf of ISIS to carry out terror activities.

During the trial, Sheikh Azhar Ul Islam and Mohammed Farhan Sheikh pleaded guilty. The case against Farhan is still ongoing.

These arrests come on the back of a string of arrests made by the NIA in the recent past. We had earlier reported about the raids and the subsequent interrogation of youths in Hyderabad. The recent signs are indicative of the deliberate attempt from ISIS to grow its influence in India.

NIA has to be vigilant in the coming days as the recent arrest of the Deputy Chief of Bangladeshi terror group Jammat-ul-Mujahideen in connection with Bodh Gaya blasts indicates, the threat to India is not only contaminated to ISIS.

IIT-B students accuse ‘The Wire’ of writing baseless story to tarnish image of their institute

0

On 11th August 2018, Prime Minister Modi addressed the 56th convocation of the Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay (IIT-B). In an over 30 minute speech, Prime Minister Modi announced a Rs. 1000 crores aid for the institute and hailed its startup innovation. PM Modi said that due to the continuous effort of the past 6 decades, IIT Bombay has made its place in the country’s selected institutions of eminence. “IITs have built Brand India globally. IIT students are at the forefront of some of the best startups in India”, added PM Modi.

For any student, it would be quite the honour to have the Prime Minister of the country address their convocation ceremony, a day which holds special importance for any student. However, a leftist propaganda website dampened the mood when it published an article headlined “IIT Bombay students question the decision to invite Modi to Convocation ceremony”. Amongst questioning what the government has done, this anonymous group of students, according to The Wire asked whether the Prime Minister wants education for all, or is he more interested in “promoting the Brahmanical idea of education only for a few people, belonging to upper caste and upper-class backgrounds”.

The anonymous students have also, according to The Wire questioned Prime Ministers’s silence on hate crimes in the country.

The Wire used these students and their statements to paint a picture of the entire institution being unhappy with the decision to invite PM Modi for the convocation. They also said that the students wished to stay anonymous because they feared a backlash.

However, this does not seem to be the case.

Senior Fellow at IIT-B, Raghav Pandey took to Twitter to call The Wire’s assertions an outright lie. He asserted that no such statement has been issued by any student body of IIT-B. He also said it is shameful for a media house to individually talk to a few students and publish that as the larger view of the students.

When we reached out to Raghav Pandey he reiterated that he blamed The Wire for tarnishing the image of the institution.

Many students took to Twitter to express their displeasure against The Wire. Umesh V. Dhumal, who says he is a PhD student from IIT-B wrote that it was an honour to host the Prime Minister and The Wire should not be taken seriously.

Amrendra Pratap Singh, another senior student who graduated yesterday said “IIT-B is a peaceful university. There is no politics in our campus and this story is baseless. There might be a handful of students who have issued these statements but those students are inconsequential and irrelevant. They don’t even matter. Ours is not like Hyderabad University”.

Anant Kasodekar, who is a second-year undergraduate student said, “The Institute has several official student bodies do good things they are still being defamed by these unofficial groups for no reason. They are trouble makers and tarnish the image of the university”.

Luvi Tyagi, who is a PhD student in IIT-B said, “Defaming the premier institution and questioning their credibility is a new attire of left politics in campuses. In the name of humanities, these people enter these institutions for propaganda and try to spoil the image that is achieved by the eternal efforts of students who dared to achieve the JEE ranks. These institutions exist due to these students and experts that IIT recruits to train them for the indigenous technological dependence of nation not due to “The gangs of Wire” active in IIT’s”.

Some students, who wish to stay anonymous for fear of backlash revealed that the student group that has perhaps issued the statement is APPSC – The Ambedkar Periyar Phule Study Circle. One student, on condition of anonymity, told us that “these kinds of groups needlessly create trouble in the campus and create instability in the institute by talking about caste and religious issues that have no importance in student life”.

“Our campus doesn’t have politics. When we have student elections, unlike in JNU type campuses, we don’t have party-affiliated organizations. This is an attempt to poison the academic atmosphere. I don’t trust ‘The Wire’ at all. Aren’t they same publication that tried to bring caste into cricket? now they want politics into IITs,” said another student, who didn’t wish to be identified fearing troll attacks, told OpIndia.

Another student, when questioned about the assertions in The Wire article, simply told OpIndia to read the HRD brochure about IITs and insisted that “the propaganda spread by such websites must be countered with the truth”.

A second-year student, who wishes to stay anonymous, responded with this short note :

It was a long and busy day here at IIT Bombay. Graduating students in their white attires wearing ‘Utariyas’ around their necks, enthusiastic about finally getting a degree for which  they had been working so hard. The noise of the helicopters, the roads sealed by police and the security force. And well ofcourse the chief guest – PM Narendra Modi. With the Convocation Day for the Diamond Jubilee year finally coming to an end, the institute retired to rest from all its hassle that lasted almost a week long.

Evidently, not all students were as excited about the invitation to Prime Minister Modi for the ceremony. It was obviously an honour for the passing out students but they too had to go through a lot of security procedures-inconvinient but justified. Afterall you are talking about the country’s PM here. Back in 2012, following the then PM Dr Manmohan Singh’s visit for convocation, helipads installed in the gymkhana grounds were not removed for weeks. This hampered sports practices until when the students themselves decided to remove it. This time though the Dean of Student Affairs ensured that measures to remove the helipads have been implemented which would ensure that the practices can resume in about 25 days. Given the monsoon season anyway, not much has been expected to be interrupted. As for the fact about convocation hall’s capacity, I don’t really relate it specifically to PM’s visit except for a row or two of extra VIP seats. This matter needs to be addressed for the future too.

Whether or not the Juice is gonna be worth the squeeze is yet to be anticipated. Its the human psychology at play that the negatives are more easily spotted and remembered than the prominent positive ones.

We tend to find the silver lining in the cloud. Maybe we should also consider the possibility of a silver cloud with a grey outline.

In addition to IIT Bombay’s recently given titile “Institute of Eminence”, PM Modi declared a financial aid of Rs.1000 crore calling the institute as “Indian Instrument of Transformation”. Throughout the years IIT B hasn’t failed to impress the world with its innovations, ventures, scholars and what not. This is just an unofficial yet prominent account of the same. The exhibition of tech-teams is yet another example of the same. Obviously this media coverage is gonna create a brand name for IIT Bombay in the field of tecnological innovations throughout the country .

PM Modi has always been able to establish an emotional connect with his audience and he did the same this time with his astonishingly well researched speech. This was obvious when he refereed to the fact that students here share the campus with crocodiles and leopards.

As much as I’d like to agree with his statement of “It is still August but I’m sure that the mood is Indigo today”, I think it would be best to leave it to the students of IIT Bombay to decide if it actually is.

By all accounts, it does seem evident that ‘The Wire’ took the statements of a few students and painted the entire university with it. Even a handful of students have a right to express their dissent against the Prime Minister. The fault, however, seems to lie with the portal for not giving its readers all the information to discern for themselves what they want to believe and what they don’t want to believe. The fault also lies with the portal for painting the opinion of a few students, who are admittedly radical left, as the opinion of the entire university.

This is not the first time that the media has used student statements and campus politics to further their own agenda by giving its readers half information. The media had earlier also tried to hide the Left’s violence in Ramjas college and reported selectively about a student beaten up for eating beef in IIT Madras. The media conveniently forgot that it was the Leftist student who had first injured another student.

In the meantime, the students who graduated yesterday seem happy and rather satisfied with the convocation ceremony.

Mohammad Zeeshan arrested for creating fake profile of Acharya Balkrishna, sending vulgar messages

0

Noida Police has arrested one Mohammad Zeeshan for creating a fake Facebook profile of Acharya Balkrishna, M.D. of Patanjali Ayurved Ltd, and sending people vulgar messages from the account.

The Police stated that the accused wanted to malign Balkrishna’s reputation. Manish Kumar Saxena, station house officer, stated, “Pramod Joshi, who runs a firm in Sector 5, brought the crime to our notice. Joshi came across the account on Facebook. He said the accused gave him a WhatsApp number, saying that the number belongs to Acharya Balkrishna, while chatting on Facebook.”

Pramod Joshi, Chief Executive Officer of Vedic Broadcasting Limited, wrote in his complaint, “The unidentified accused has created a fake Facebook profile of Balkrishna and was chatting with his followers in an indecent and vulgar manner which was damaging his reputation.” The cyber cell of the Police had been tracking Zeeshan since the case was registered.

A spokesperson for Patanjali Ayurveda, SK Tijarawala, suggested that more people were involved with the attempt at defamation while demanding a thorough investigation into the matter. He said, “This was a targeted attack to destroy the reputation of an organisation that is spread across the country. It is a strict offence. There should be a thorough investigation into the matter. Such an act is not done by just an individual. The motive is to put doubt in the minds of people. We respect free speech but to malign an individual’s image is not right.”

The Police has recovered a Motorola phone from the accused and two SIM cards. The accused has been booked under sections 419 (punishment for impersonation), 420 (cheating) and 500 (punishment for defamation) of the Indian Penal Code and sections of the Information Technology Act.

Ravi shankar Prasad, Vasundhara Raje in the list of ‘most influential people in digital government’: Apolitical

0

A UK based NGO, apolitical, has released its list of 100 most influential people in digital government and India’s Union Minister for Electronics and IT and Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje have featured in it. Ravi Shankar Prasad has made it to top 20 list for his ministry’s contribution on a new data protection framework for India as well as digital inclusion and cyber security.

The ministry has recently launched unified mobile app, UMANG (Unified Mobile Application for New-age Governance) which provides a single platform access for all Indian citizens to access pan India e-governance services ranging from central to local government bodies. Prasad was also instrumental in promoting digital development in the rural areas of India by creating a network of about 300,000 village level digital entrepreneurs who are operating digital service delivery kiosks known as the Common Service Centers across India. This has not only ensured the availability of digital services in rural areas but has also created job opportunities for rural youth.

Other than Prasad, Rajasthan chief minister Vasundhara Raje also featured in the top 100 of the list. Raje’s government has shown the way in going digital by being the first state in India to implement an integrated and unified e-governance framework and architecture, known for leveraging technology and digital government. The Rajasthan government also runs one of the largest direct benefit transfer scheme in the country. In 2015, Rajasthan government even launched the Startup Policy [pdf], much before the national launch of Startup India Policy in 2016.

Other leaders included in the list include Prime Minister of Australia, Malcolm Turnbull, President of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo and other world leaders.

Apolitical Foundation is a ‘global network for government, helping public servants find the ideas, people, and partners they need to solve the hardest challenges facing our societies’. It is also supported by the E.U horizon fund 2020 grant.

Protecting the rights of indigenous people of the state priority, after Assam, Meghalaya mulls NRC update

0

Meghalaya chief minister Conrad Sangma has said that his government will examine the demands for the National Register for Citizens (NRC) update in the state, adding that protecting the rights of the indigenous people of the state is the government’s topmost priority. Sangma helms the National People’s Party, which is allied with the National Democratic Alliance, which recently published the final draft of the NRC. Sangma said that the government is still deliberating on what mechanism could be adopted for the same.

The influential Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) had demanded that NRC exercise is done in Meghalaya like in Assam. We had earlier reported how the KSU had set up various checkpoints along Ri Bhoi, East Jaintia Hills and West Khasi Hills and apprehended over a thousand illegal immigrants since. Apart from the KSU, chairman of the Grand Council of Chiefs of Meghalaya John F. Kharshiing also sent a memorandum to Prime Minister Modi to extend the Assam-like protocol to Meghalaya and update the NRC to weed out illegal immigrants in Meghalaya.

Not just Meghalaya, but the demand to identify and weed out illegal immigrants has piqued in India across the states including in states like Haryana, Maharashtra, Rajasthan over and above the Northeastern states. Interestingly, while the central leadership of the Congress party have cast aspersions upon the whole exercise, their state units have come out in support of it.

According to the NRC, as many as 40 lakh people among the total of 3.29 crore population of Assam were potential illegal immigrants in India. Opposition parties have perceived it as an opportunity to score one over the BJP and made inflammatory remarks while the Government, and the Army on various occasions, has maintained that illegal immigrants pose a serious threat to the demography and security of the country.
