Is Hindu Spirituality a Super Science?

HOW THE BODY WORKS

In a nutshell, the heart pumps the blood to the brain and keeps it alive along with the body. The brain then sends various signals across the body through the nerves, which keeps the body functioning. The blood is nourished by food digested and absorbed from the gut (intestines) and the oxygen absorbed from the air in the lungs.

The brain functions primarily by generating minute amounts of electrical activity which can be recorded. Many of us are aware of the electrical activity of the heart, which is what is recorded as an ECG (expanded as electrocardiogram). ECG is quite well-known amongst the people. (1)Similarly, the brain’s electrical activity can be recorded in an electroencephalogram (EEG) (2, 3).

These electrical activities of the body are classified as the electrophysiological aspects. The physiology of the body is the way in which these aspects come together with the chemical nature of the body making it function. In a normal human, it all works in synchronicity which can also be measured by studying the cells (the building blocks of the body) in the various tissues (cellular). The body of an organism is made of various organs and the type of material that makes an organ is called a tissue. For example, the heart is an organ and so is the brain. The heart is made up of cardiac tissue, which is a collection of different types of cells, mostly heart muscle cells and specialised electrical conducting cells. The brain is made up of various types of nervous system cells such as the neurons (nerve cells) and their supporting cells. The individual cells can be visualised using a microscope. The dense collection of them (cells) is our visible body actually.

The chemical aspects of the body’s activities are called the biochemical parameters. For example, the level of glucose in the blood is one such parameter. The sub-microscopic changes within the cell are studied in molecular biology.

HOW THE CELL WORKS

The cell works using the instructions encoded in the genes contained within the cell. The entire set of genes and the codes of DNA in which the genes are embedded in, physically, inside the cell is called the genome. Various genes get “expressed” (like spoken) differentially depending on the then needs of the cell. For example, for a cell that is growing a growth-related set of genes get expressed, for a cell that is actively converting the sugar (glucose) into energy (e.g., bodybuilding) a completely different set of genes get expressed and so on. One of the aspects studied in the genomic research is the variable and differential expression of genes in cells. Like we measure the glucose present in the blood (biochemistry), we can also study the chemical aspects inside of the cell (biochemical). If we study the energy-related biochemical aspects it is called cellular metabolism.

The cell itself is made of many organelles. They are like rooms in a house if you want to compare a cell to a house. An organelle called the nucleus contains the DNA that makes up the genes, for example. Mitochondria is another such organelle within the cell that converts the glucose, absorbed by the cells from the blood surrounding them (pumped by the heart), into energy. The glucose is what we get by eating food. The food gets digested (broken down into small absorbable molecules) in our gut (intestines). One such unit of broken food is glucose. This is what the cells use. Within the cells, glucose is converted into energy by the mitochondria (metabolic activity).

HINDUISM AND MEDICAL SCIENCE

Now, you might be wondering why all this basic biology matters to Hinduism. Can science come to the rescue of the Hindu spiritual seekers? Yes. How? Let us see.

If Hinduism is real it has to show some medical benefits that are directly measurable. Say, you do meditation by reciting Oma number of times and focusing on the sound. An EEG is done on you and the waves (EEG traces) show your brain is in a state of relaxation. Then such relaxation is shown to reduce biochemical markers of stress. This will lead to scientists to conclude that Hindu meditation is good for health as it reduces stress which is known to cause various well-known diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, increased blood pressure, (brain) stroke, etc.

In fact, this is not novel in medicine now. Many such studies and more have been done on meditation, yoga and so on. The positive beneficial effects have led to a large-scale global adoption of all these techniques, especially in the West. You might now ask if this is all so generic to Hinduism and well established will it still prove anything about any Hindu Swamiji. Are they not just a professional, perhaps akin to a gym trainer or a fitness expert or a doctor?

No. Why? Because the outcomes (results) of some of the scientific studies on these Swamijis and their spiritual techniques are mind-boggling. Things which have been considered physically impossible, let alone medically, has been shown as possible by some of them. Additionally, in some aspects, what was known as possible with the above techniques, the scale of the impact is unimaginably high, say many orders in magnitude. And what connects it to Hinduism alone? Because the results are as described in the Hindu scriptures for a given set of spiritual techniques that are being implemented from the same scriptures. If that were the case, does it not only prove Hinduism but goes to prove those Swamijis credibility too? Is it not especially so if the results appear otherwise physically impossible and even if the scriptures themselves claim that it is “only” possible to have such magnitudes of effects (outcomes) at the hands of an “enlightened” guru (master)? (4)

SO WHAT ARE THOSE MIND-BOGGLING OUTCOMES IN SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH

In-vitro (test-tube) studies: Professor Sudha Warrier at the School of Regenerative Medicine, Manipal University, showed that an Ayurvedic preparation called the Dhanvantara Khashāya increased the youthfulness (reduced senescence, that is ageing) in human cells grown in the laboratory (in-vitro) by three-fold (5). The magnitude of the effect is indeed mind-boggling and the below described clinical studies (in-vivo) on human subjects show a similar magnitude of effect that is numerically reassuring.

Electrophysiological: The EEG of the person touched by a Swamiji, syncs with the EEG of the Swamiji while “spiritual healing” was offered (6). Similarly, EEG changes and heart rate changes (measured with simultaneous ECG recordings) were observed in “patients” who were offered “spiritual healing” by the healers initiated by the Swamiji (both in the same location and in remote healing, that is while the healers and patients were geographically separated) (7). This is generally considered impossible in medicine. For EEG to change, particularly for the electrical waves and activity to sync between two people, is not considered possible in the conventional medical neurological wisdom.

Is it an isolated phenomenon of some electrophysiological effects? Not at all. The following results are published in peer-reviewed international scientific journals.

Cellular: The people who undergo a 21-day intense spiritual-yogic programme designed on the basis of Hindu scriptures (called Agamas, together with Vedas termed as Vedagamas) show an increase in morphologically healthy stem cells in the peripheral blood, indicating an increase in the youthful rejuvenating capacity of the body of the participants. The end-benefit, as deduced from this cellular marker outcome, can potentially include improved immunity and faster healing from injuries amongst others (8).

Molecular biology: Everybody wants to grow younger, not older. So how if the 21-day intense spiritual-yogic programme did something about that? It indeed appears to do that too. The genes reside in the chromosome, which is made of DNA. In fact, genes are nothing but codes of a 4-letter alphabetical system each represented by a unique type of DNA molecule. The ends of the chromosomes are called telomeres. As one ages (becomes old) the length of the telomeres shorten. If the shortening can be prevented or reversed in a healthy fashion it is scientifically believed that there will be an arrest of and reversal of ageing related processes and associated cellular damages. This can lead to an improvement of health, prolongation of life and decrease in diseases while simultaneously making one younger or arresting their ageing (anti-ageing) (8).

Metabolic: Similarly, everybody wants an Olympic athletic body and fitness. However, nobody wants to spend time in the gym slogging like an ant. The people who undergo a 21-day intense spiritual-yogic programme and those who undergo a “spiritual healing” like touch (daily Deekshaor “energy” Darshan), both groups, show increasing levels of mitochondrial activity. The increase was multifold in both the groups. This is the kind of increased metabolic activity and efficiency that one expects to see in an athlete who has trained for the Olympics, say all his or her life. This study, done as a pilot, is now under “preparation of manuscript” stage for publication in peer-reviewed international scientific journals (9). The obvious health benefits would be a reduction in the severity of or even a possible cure for diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular disorders.

Gene expression changes. We saw above that the cells in the different stages of their life, say growth vs maturation, express a variable and different set of genes that often are identifiable as a signature of the specific stage they are in. Sometimes even different physiological states produce differential expression of genes. For example, after a meal, the intestinal cells will express genes that lead to the production of enzymes (these are biological “chemicals” made of amino acids, a class of proteins) that help in the breakage and digestion of the food.

The researchers working closely with the Ashram found that those who undergo a 21-day intense spiritual-yogic programme had seen their cells alter the expression of genes to a vastly healthier profile conducive to better and more robust immunity (preventing or reducing diseases like psoriasis, arthritis, etc.), anti-ageing, anti-cancer and so on (10).

Of particular interest are the changes that relate to the modulation of immunity. Immunity helps our body protect against foreign invaders, such as bacteria, viruses and other parasites, and even cancer which originates from the corrupted cells of our own body. But in some people, this system can go out of tune and start attacking their own bodies. These pathologies are called autoimmune diseases. It is one of the pathologies that has been observed by the researchers in the case series they have looked at relating to “spiritual healing” that shows one of the best and most promising response. This clinical observation seems to correlate well with the gene expression alteration profile (11).

Clinical outcomes: Corresponding to the holistic changes seen above, from electrical to cellular to molecular biology to metabolic to genomic, various other groups of researchers working closely with the Ashram have seen and documented corresponding clinical improvements in both healthy and diseased adults and children. These have been self-published by the Ashram (9).

Children and spirituality: The children studying in the Ashram’s residential schools (Gurukuls) have been shown by an American researcher and educationist, Dr Deborah Chance, to have various mental and physical capabilities that are well above the expected ranges for their age. Importantly, their intelligence quotient (IQ) was at the level of a genius or above for most, if not all of them (9).

In fact, many of these children and some of the adult disciples of that Swamiji have achieved some extraordinary feats in some phenomenon that are currently beyond science (11, 12).

Forgetting the realm beyond science, for now, just the measurable and scientifically attestable benefits seem to point to a Hinduism that is possibly beyond ordinary science. No known technique or drug in modern medicine can produce even a part of the effects (ageing to metabolism) observed and reported in peer-reviewed scientific publications by these researchers.

Extraordinary science, suprascientific Hinduism (13)

CAG says deliberate attempt made by UPA govt to favour Boeing even though it didn’t fulfil requirements: Reports

0

As per an Economic Times report, the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) has asserted that deliberate attempts were made to favour the American company Boeing over their Spanish competitors by the UPA in $2.8 billion dollar deal signed by the government for the procurement of P8 I maritime reconnaissance aircraft.

In its report, the CAG claimed that Boeing was favoured by the Ministry as a deal with EADS CASA, Spain was enhanced to include a 20-year support package, a package that was absent in the Boeing offer and hence it turned out to be cheaper. “The contract was concluded with M/s Boeing, USA in January 2009 at MUSD 2,137.54. At a later date, M/s Boeing, USA offered the product support under a separate negotiable contract and consequently the deduced ranking of M/s Boeing, USA as L-1 turned out to be incorrect,” says the report.

On a worrying note, the CAG states that the American platform does not completely meet the requirements of the Indian Navy. Also, Boeing is yet to fulfil its offset obligations of $641 million dill date despite the fact that the terms of the contract demanded all obligations to be fulfilled by August 2016.

The Congress’ record on defence deals is very sketchy, to say the least. Recently, even Congress mouthpiece National herald admitted that Bofors was indeed a scam. Congress President Rahul Gandhi, who has been working overtime to paint the Rafale deal as a scam despite all evidence pointing towards the fact that it is not, will have a fair bit of trouble explaining away the latest damning report by the CAG.

Omar Abdullah tweets ‘fake news’, gets called out by Mehbooba Mufti in style

0

The election for the post of the Deputy Chairman in the Rajya Sabha is scheduled to be held on 9th August and political calculations are already rife over the support of regional parties to the respective candidates by the ruling NDA and opposition UPA. According to reports, Rajya Sabha Chairman Vice President Venkaiah Naidu today announced that the members of the house can give their notices for motion till tomorrow noon.

The NDA is reportedly fielding JD(U)’s Harivansh Narayan Singh as the NDA candidate. The BJD has reportedly confirmed that Bihar CM and JD(U) chief Nitish Kumar had called Navin Patnaik and asked for BJD’s support. Some media reports suggest that NCP MP Vandana Chavan will be the opposition’s candidate for the post. The NDA does not have a majority in the Rajya Sabha and needs every crucial vote to make its candidate reach the majority vote mark of 112. The NDA currently has the support of 106 MPs. Considering the entire opposition, including TDP supports one candidate, they will reportedly have 117 votes. TRS and BJD are yet to declare their inclinations for the vote.

Amidst all the political calculations, there was another drama playing out between two former chief ministers of Jammu and Kashmir. National Conference’s Omar Abdullah shared a Tweet claiming that PDP’s Mehbooba Mufti has promised her party’s support to both NDA and the opposition. He teased her on how that is going to work.

First, she called Omar Abdullah’s assertions “fake news”. She said usually, fake news and falsehoods are peddled by dubious news channels but it is baffling when politicians like Omar Abdullah fabricate stories based on pure fiction.

Then, Mehbooba Mufti soon replied to Abdullah’s Tweet with a single character, a long-nosed emoji, signifying a lying face. Subtly teasing that Abdullah is lying.

Mehbooba Mufti’s reply

However, Omar Abdullah teased back saying the persons behind Mufti’s Twitter account have a great sense of humour. Hinting he did not believe it was Mehbooba who could come up with a smart reply like that. Mehbooba Mufti was not giving up.

Mehbooba Mufti’s reply

She teased back that it is the second time Omar Abdullah has shared the fake news. Using the least number of characters possible, she stated that she herself handles her tweets and Abdullah should give a compliment where it is due.

Both the PDP and NC have been NDA allies in the past. Which candidate Mehbooba’s party will be supporting is still not clear, especially considering that the BJP had pulled Mufti’s government down in June recently in Jammu and Kashmir, causing her to lose the CM post, but her smart response on Twitter certainly invited some accolades.

Kashmir: Terrorist caught on tape begging locals not to inform the Army of his location

0

The security forces have launched massive anti-terror operations in Jammu and Kashmir since last year and its impact is already visible. Media outlets have shared a recently surfaced video where a Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist is seen begging the locals not to inform the whereabouts of terrorists to army personnel.

In the video, a Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist named Tariq Maulvi is seen pleading the locals with folded hands not to turn informers and give the location of terrorists to security forces. According to a report in Republic TV, Maulvi was speaking at the funeral of slain Hizbul Commander Umar Khubaib. Khubaib alias Umar Malik was recently gunned down by security forces in Kilora area in Shopian district early on Saturday morning. A total of five terrorists were killed in that encounter.

In the video, Maulvi is seen speaking in part Urdu and part local dialect. As per a report published in Republic world, Maulvi is pleading,”We face such difficulty in recruiting just one boy. We run from pillar to post. Those mujahids who had created their own fields, lands and routes, are not being allowed to stay there. Tell us if what we are doing is wrong, if picking up arms is wrong, we will quit, but please do not turn into informers. Is it only our responsibility to fight for Azadi? Let us quit everything then and you can move in the path of Allah. Why are you people doing such bad things? Shopian district has suffered the worst damage. Indian security forces have killed every senior mujahid with experience. All that is left now are poor, untrained ones like me. If we are noticed by a civilian, we have to change four villages. Why are you informing the Indian forces? They are sitting in their camps and they are aware of our every movement. Please stop spying on their behalf. Our fight is against India, but we need your help.”

It is notable here that the Indian Army has launched ‘Operation Clean up’ to rid Shopian district of Islamic terrorism in the month of May. The operation was started after reports of increased terrorist activities in the area and around 4000 personnel of the Army, CRPF and Jammu and Kashmir police were deployed in the area. The operation involved a door-to-door search, combing and intel gathering.

Chief of Army Staff General Bipin Rawat had been firm on stringent measures to weed out terrorism in the valley and the Indian security forces had killed over 200 terrorists last year and many have been slain this year too. Shopian had also seen many incidents of locals providing cover to hiding terrorists and interfering in anti-terror operations with stone pelting. COAS had stated that any locals who support terrorists will be treated as anti-national elements and the security forces will take retaliatory action.

Terrorists have also been targetting army and J&K police officers who are on leave. Recently, a rifleman named Aurangzeb was tortured and killed in Pulwama.

Let’s give the devil his due – Tharoor didn’t really accuse PM Modi of not wearing green clothes

0

A raging controversy has surrounded Congress leader Shashi Tharoor, who is currently out on bail after being named as an accused of abetting his wife, Sunanda Pushkar’s suicide.

Recently, while speaking in a seminar in Thiruvananthapuram over the topic of ‘Standing up to hatred: Violence and intolerance in contemporary India’, Tharoor stated, ”Why does our Prime Minister, who wears all sorts of outlandish headgear wherever he goes around the country, refuse to wear a Muslim skull cap? You’ve seen him in hilarious Naga headdress, feathers, and various kinds of extraordinary outfits. Why does he refuse to wear the green?”

While his statement calling the Naga tribal headgear outlandish points to his inherent ‘brown sahib’ mentality and disdain towards indigenous cultures, and as Mr MR Venkatesh pointed out, reduces secularism to a fancy dress competition, the latter part of his statement, where he wonders why Modi refuses to ‘wear green’ seems to have been terribly misinterpreted by the Media.

It is evident from Shashi Tharoor’s statement that he used the colour green as a figurative term for Islamic, meaning only the skull cap. Of course, this predilection to associate a colour with religion appears to be a fallout of being a politician from Congress, the party that invented “saffron” terror.

The misinterpretation of Tharoor’s statement went so far as for media houses like India Today published “fact checks” proving that the Prime Minister indeed, does wear green colour kurtas.

Friedrich Nietzsche once said, ‘All things are subject to interpretation. Whichever interpretation prevails at a given time is a function of power and not truth’. Congress knows this game all to well, but perhaps never expected the pet snakes to turn around and bite them too.

The media has a habit of twisting metaphors and matter of speech, to its most basic and literal denomination thereby, giving birth to controversies that live forever. Who can forget how Narendra Modi’s ‘puppy’ comment was twisted by the media, and that faulty interpretation was adopted lock stock and barrel by the Congress to demonise him? The media and the Congress party force-fed the entire nation with the narrative that Modi compared Muslims to dogs. A statement ill-interpreted. Happily co-opted by Congress because it suited them.

And don’t we all remember V K Singh’s ‘dog’ comment? He said, “If somebody throws at a dog, then the government is responsible, it is not like that”. That was twisted and OpEd kings and queens came out in scores writing about how Gen V K Singh compared Dalits to dogs. What he meant, however, that the central government cannot be pulled up for every crime in the country. He was right. Law and order is a state subject.

But just as media houses like India Today “fact check” Shashi Tharoor’s “green clothes” comment today, there were media houses that hounded the likes of Modi and Singh for their comments which were ‘outlandishly’ taken out of context.

What is tragic, however, is how the Congress party has been playing footsie with the same media that has indulged in such grotesque, and almost criminal stupidity. The Congress popped open the bubbly every time it happened to their adversary. The Congress rode the wave of misinterpretation every time it gave them the opportunity to tarnish their opponents. The truth be damned. Logic and common sense be damned.

Today, when Tharoor and his party is up in arms screaming ‘misinterpretation’, it would have only lent credence to their words had at least Tharoor called out the blatant distortions in the past. Instead, Congress was and still is, in cahoots with the very media that indulges in blatant slander.

After Assam NRC, demand to weed out illegal immigrants is reaching a crescendo across India

0

The Supreme Court direction to the state of Assam to publish the National Registry of Citizens has now opened a debate across different states, for the necessity of similar data on the citizens residing in their respective states.

It seems that the acceptability is high among the people for an exercise like NRC, which accounts for the actual citizens of the land. The recent Assam NRC has proved that, despite some shortcomings, the majority of the people are willing to participate in an event which could weed out illegal immigrants from the country.

After Assam, many states have been thinking of having its own population registry. The cry is far louder in states bordering other countries, especially in the east. The rampant illegal immigration occurred in the past with the alleged support of some political parties like Congress, to change the demographics to influence the electoral politics has caused a furore in the some of the eastern and North-eastern states.

The political parties in Bengal have been demanding the state government to publish its own NRC, as Bengal has been one of the largest victims of cross-border people movement. Recently, senior BJP leader Kailash Vijayvargiya said that an exercise to update the National Register of Citizens (NRC) will be conducted in West Bengal if the BJP comes to power. He blazed guns against the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for her stand on NRC and accused her of “siding with infiltrators” for the sake of votes.

The North-Eastern states are demanding for such a massive public exercise from a very long time. Recently, the North East Students Organisation (NESO) has demanded implementation of the NRC across the North East. In a recent meeting held with the participation of NESO, All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) and the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) in Shillong on Sunday said that “The demand for the NRC-like exercise is nothing new. The NRC is the need of the hour in the North East to gauge the infiltration problem in the region. The modalities of updating the NRC can be different for different states.”

The government of Haryana has decided to constitute the National Registry of Citizens in its state. The Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment Krishan Bedi said that the non-residents of India have been living in the country without any permits or identifications, therefore the Haryana state will also constitute NRC to check those migrants.

Interestingly, many political outfits from Maharashtra, Delhi, Meghalaya, Tripura, Rajasthan and Arunachal Pradesh have now demanded NRC in their states. In Maharastra, BJP has demanded that a similar exercise is held in Mumbai to weed out all the illegal Bangladeshis staying in the city. Manoj Tiwari, the president of the Delhi BJP has also asked for ousting of illegal Bangladeshis and Rohingyas residing in Delhi.

In Arunachal Pradesh, All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU) has asked undocumented migrants to leave the state within 15 days. They fear that a large number of illegal migrants who did not find their names in Assam NRC may enter the state of Arunachal Pradesh.

Despite the shrill opposition of the ‘Mahagathbandhan’ against NRC, opinions on the matter have been vastly divided even within their own ranks. For instance, while Mamata Banerjee makes inflammatory comments to polarize the citizenry of Assam along ethnic lines, leaders from the Assam unit of TMC have resigned because of her remarks.

While the central leadership of the Congress party have cast aspersions upon the whole exercise, their state units have come out in support of it. And it’s not only the state unit of the Congress party in Assam that’s supporting the NRC, even the Deputy CM of Karnataka, G Parameshwara, asserted that no foreigner would be allowed to stay in the state without proper documents. Thus, it appears that the central leadership of the ‘Mahagathbandhan’ is not judging the mood of the nation correctly.

The National Registry of Citizens has received a positive response all over the country. The illegal immigrants’ issue is one of the most critical challenges in the country’s foreseeable future, which may create massive national security challenges, as it may bring more Islamic terror from across the borders. The general acceptability across the country is not to allow illegal immigrants to use our land to pose a threat to the lives of the citizens of our country.

Congress leader tells workers to learn discipline from RSS, days after being assaulted by partymen: Reports

0

The Congress appears to be stumbling into one controversy after another in poll-bound Madhya Pradesh as a fight broke out between party workers in the state over a chair. The state Congress general secretary-in-charge, Deepak Babaria, then advised his party-men to learn something from the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, reports NDTV.

When asked by the media to clarify, Babaria saw no issues with his comments. “Yes, I appreciated the way Pandit Nehru used them during the China war, their discipline. If something is good about any organisation there is no harm in appreciating it,” he is reported to have said.

The comments come only a few days after Babaria was assaulted by party workers during his visit to Rewa, Madhya Pradesh when he was talking to reporters. Reports indicate that he was roughed up by his own party workers because he declared Kamal Nath and Jyotiraditya Scindia as the only probable Congress candidates for Chief Minister of the state.

We had earlier reported on the growing fissures within the Congress party in Madhya Pradesh. Despite its attempts to project a united front against the Bharatiya Janata Party, the factional divisions within its state unit due to the Chief Ministerial ambitions of senior Congress leaders, Kamal Nath and Jyotiraditya Scindia, might well prove to be their undoing.

JNU Students Union calls for boycott of convocation which is being held after 46 years

0

The left-inclined JNU Students Union has called for a boycott of the convocation event scheduled on 8th August. According to reports, the JNUSU has issued a statement calling for the boycott claiming that the new vice chancellor of JNU has been ‘curbing their democratic rights’. The convocation is being held after a long gap of 46 years.

According to reports, the JNUSU has asked to join another event organised by them where former faculty members like Harbans Mukhia, Anand Kumar and leftist leader Kavita Krishnan are invited. The JNUSU has reportedly claimed in a statement, “For the last two and half years, we have witnessed the systematic destruction of our campus led by Vice Chancellor M Jagdeesh Kumar. The VC and his political masters, through their anti-student, anti-social justice policies like research seat-cut, scuttling reservations, fee-hikes, victimisations and targetting of student activists through fines and punishments, have tried their best to demolish JNU and all that it stands for.”

The Students Union has reportedly called the convocation event a ‘photo-op’ in the name of degree distribution. The statement further included that they have earned their degrees through their efforts and commitment of the teachers. The statement reportedly reads, “We would like to say it loud and clear Mr VC, we owe our degrees to the democratic culture of JNU and the destroyer of JNU has no moral authority to distribute our degrees.”

The Students Union had reportedly boycotted the previous convocation of 1971 too. But they joined it after actor Balraj Sahni was invited.

Earlier, the JNUSU had criticised the decision of JNU administration to ask students to submit a proforma to be allowed to attend the convocation. The proforma required students to furnish their registration number, enrollment number, thesis title, Aadhar number, mobile number and address. JNU rector had stated that the students who do not have Aadhar can submit any other valid identification proof.

Earlier, the JNUSU had objected to the administration’s decision to make 75% attendance compulsory at the university. JNUSU had complained that the compulsory attendance norm is ‘going to curtail academic freedom and destroy JNU culture’. The student body was earlier also allegedly involved in vandalism and violence at a screening of a movie made on Love Jihad issue. They had allegedly beaten up the security staff and students at the event. The leftist controlled student body had earlier opposed to a course on Islamic Terrorism’ and called it grotesque islamophobia. The students union had been at loggerheads with the VC ever since he joined and had called him RSS agent. The JNUSU members had also allegedly manhandled the dean of the university when called into his office for discussion.

Kerala: Concerned over political violence, President Kovind calls it a ‘blot’ on Kerala’s past

0

President Ram Nath Kovind expressed his concerns over the political violence in Kerala and called upon the political groups and citizens to curb the same as it has no place in the constitution. In the inaugural function of national-level conclaves to mark the conclusion of diamond jubilee of the legislative assembly yesterday, Presiden Kovind said “that people of Kerala and the citizens of India deserve that we do serious thinking on the issue” (political violence) which does very little justice to the glorious tradition and history of debate, mutual dignity and respect for others’ point of view of the state.

He added that debate, dissent and disagreements are accepted and welcomed in the polity but violence has no place in a democracy. Stating that the political violence has a dampening effect on the glorious past of the state, he urged the citizens to do their utmost to curb the violence.

In recent times, Kerala has seen turbulent times in terms of political killings with workers and supporters from either side of the political spectrum being murdered, many times brutally. Kannur, Kerala CM Pinaryi Vijayan’s hometown, seems to have become synonymous to political violence with the rampant killings. Recently, members of a radical Islamist outfit were arrested for murdering CPM’s student leader in Kerala college. Many youths from Kerala have also reportedly joined the ISIS owing to an increased influence of fundamental Islam.

Saudi Youth Organization threatens Canada with a 9/11 style terror attack, issues apology

A Saudi youth organization, ‘Infographic KSA’, recently, tweeted an infographic that appeared to threaten Canada with a 9/11 style terrorist attack. The tweet, which has now been deleted, read, “He who interferes with what doesn’t concern him finds what doesn’t please him.”

The controversial tweet was in response to another tweet by Global Affairs Canada which expressed concern about the surge in arrests of women’s rights activists and other civil rights groups.

Tensions have been simmering between the two countries after Canada voiced its support for the persecuted human rights activists in the Islamic country. In response, Saudi Arabia has ordered the Canadian ambassador to leave within 24 hours and have announced the freezing of all new trade and investment transactions between the two countries. The official twitter handle of Saudi Arabia’s foreign ministry has stated that the KSA considers it an overt and blatant instance of interference in its internal affairs and considered it by Global Affairs Canada as an attack on its sovereignty.

The Saudi Youth Organization, however, has issued an apology over its highly insensitive and inappropriate tweet. “The aircraft was intended to symbolize the return of the ambassador,” read their apology. “We realize this was not clear and any other meaning was unintentional.” Matters were not helped by the fact that 15 of the 19 hijackers who flew the plane into the Twin Towers were citizens of Saudi Arabia.
