AAP workers wearing saffron clothes waved swords at mosque as part of conspiracy, rebel party leader alleges

0

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) rebel leader Kapil Mishra, who has been taking on Delhi Chief Minister and exposing his fallacies, has claimed that Aam Aadmi Party workers conspired to spread communal violence during the Ram Navami celebrations in Delhi.

Earlier in April, AAP MLA Amanatullah Khan had suggested a proposal against Ram Navami celebrations where Khan alleged that in the guise of celebrations, there was an attempt to instigate communal violence.

Today, Kapil Mishra posted an explosive video claiming that those miscreants who were wearing saffron scarves and waving swords outside the mosque near the residence of Vidhan Sabha speaker Ram Nivas Goel were AAP volunteers.

In the shocking video, men wearing saffron robes and scarves are seen dancing and waving swords outside the mosque. However, on close inspection of the people present in the video, it has come to light that these men shouting ‘Jai Shree Ram’ are allegedly Aam Aadmi Party workers, who are allegedly close to AAP leaders including Gopal Rai, Sanjay Singh as well as Ram Nivas Goel, the Vidhan Sabha speaker.

Mishra alleges that this is a conspiracy to create communal tension between Hindus and Muslims in Delhi and to discredit Ram Navami festival. Appealing to the public to unite against the divisive politics played by Arvind Kejriwal and his team.

This is not the first time such speculations of attempting to create a communal divide by vested forces have come to the fore. Earlier, we had reported how social media was abuzz with theories that a same person was Rajput Karni Sena activist during the anti-Padmaavat protests and a Dalit rights activist during the recent Bharat Bandh call.

Dawood aides arrested for plotting to murder pro-Ram Mandir Shia Wakf board Chief

0

The Delhi police’s special cell on Friday arrested three suspected aide of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim. As per Delhi DCP special cell, the trio was planning to kill Shia Wakf Board chief Wasim Rizvi, at the underworld don’s behest. Reports have claimed that weapons were recovered from the three aides and that they have been identified as Arif, Abrar and Saleem.

This development comes after Rizvi had received a threat call in January from a man identifying as Dawood Ibrahim’s aide. The aide allegedly threatened to blow up Rizvi and his family. As per Rizvi, the caller asked him to seek pardon from Islamic clerics and also claimed that Dawood Ibrahim was annoyed ( by his statements).

As a result of this, an FIR was lodged in connection with this matter with the Sahadatganj police station in old Lucknow city.

Rizvi has for quite some time ruffled the feathers of a few radical Muslims for his politically incorrect views. In January apart from the threat call by Dawood’s aide, a Muslim organisation had announced a Rs 10 lakh bounty on his head. The organisation named All India Faizan-e-Madina Council (AIFMC) had also promised a free haj trip to anyone who brought them Rizvi’s head.

In both the aforementioned cases, radicals were miffed with Rizvi for calling Madrasas as terror hubs.

Besides these views, Rizvi has also openly called for the construction of a Ram Mandir in Ayodhya. While on the matter, Rizvi famously asked Muslims opposed to the temple’s construction to go to Pakistan. As per him, such fundamentalist Muslims had no place in India.

This pro-Ram Manidr view of Rizvi is incidentally in line with the Shia Wakf Board’s stance that Ram Mandir be constructed at the Janambhoomi area, while a Mosque be built in a Muslim dominated area that is at a reasonable distance from Lord Ram’s birthplace.

Besides advocating for a Ram Mandir, Rizvi also wrote to the AIMPLB president asking them to return all the Mosques which were built on destroyed temples, back to Hindus.

Gen VK Singh on Kathua: ‘Do not make us unwilling participants of such disgrace in the name of religion or nationality’

0

The horrific crime of rape and murder of an eight-year-old girl in Kathua has sparked outrage all over the country. People from all walks of life have been expressing their horror and shock over the incident. Mediapersons, politicians and even the general public have expressed their sorrow and anger over the barbaric crime.

Minster of State for External Affairs General VK Singh yesterday condemned the crime with strong words. He stated in a tweet that we have failed the victim as humans and promised that she will not be denied justice.

General Singh stated, “There should be a difference between humans and animals and there is, but what happened with an eight-year-old girl in Kathua only proves that being a human is a shame on itself. Maybe animals are far better than us. I doubt there would be anyone who has not been unnerved by the barbarity of the heart-crushing crime. But I also want to keep my emotions aside and demand that the guilty should be punished in such a way that it becomes an example for generations to come.”

He further added, “Another thing I want to add is that the people who want to shelter the guilty on the pretext of religion are no better than the criminals themselves. Their support shows that they too are capable of committing such an act given an opportunity. It is for the people to decide who they want to represent. Please do not make us unwilling participants of such disgrace in the name of religion or nationality. Please spare two minutes to think about the family whose eight-year-old child has snatched away with such bestiality. The least I want is for the law to do its job and punish the guilty for what they deserve.”

The J&K Crime Branch has submitted its charge sheet on the crime on Monday and the accused has been arrested. Several policemen were also accused of the crime and have been arrested. The local groups and Jammu High Court Bar Association have been demanding a CBI inquiry into the case.

The victim was reported missing from 10th January 2018, Her body was found in the nearby woods of the Rasana village a week late. The charge sheet claims that she was raped several times and tortured before being murdered.

Indian citizen Ibrahim Zubair Mohammad pleaded guilty in a USA court for funding Al Qaeda

0

Ibrahim Zubair Mohammed, an Indian citizen pleaded guilty in US court for having funded the dreaded Al Qaeda terrorist Anwar al-Awlaki in Yemen. Zubair was a former student of University of Illinois (2001-05). He had been living in the US (Toledo, Texas) since 2006.

Ibrahim has been awarded 60 months prison. Yahya Farooq Mohammad had also pleaded guilty last year and was awarded 27½ years in prison. Anwar al- Awlaki was killed in a drone strike in 2011.

Ibrahim has spent 30 months in prison during the trial (that period will be deducted from 60-month punishment). Both Ibrahim and Yahya Farooq Mohammad will be deported to India after completing their prison sentence. Other two accused in the case are Sultane Roome Salim and Asif Ahmed Salim who are still undergoing trial. Sultane and Asif are US citizens.

As per reports, Michael Freeman, an assistant U.S. attorney explained the method used for the crime as below.

  • Among the methods used to transfer funds to Farooq was for Ibrahim to pay expenses, including tuition and the purchase of a car, for a relative attending the University of Toledo. The relative’s father then repaid the amounts of those expenses to Farooq in the UAE. The effect of this method of transferring the funds to Farooq was to conceal the source of the funds received by Farooq.

Freeman further added:

  • Ibrahim knew that Farooq had willfully provided the funds to Awlaki, including the funds that Ibrahim assisted in transferring to Farooq, with the knowledge that, at least in part, the funds would be used to cause death or serious bodily injury to a civilian

The judge reportedly remarked, “You ultimately will be removed from this country and told you are not welcome to come back“, to Zubair Ibrahim Mohammad. Ibrahim had lied to the FBI when he was questioned in 2011. After the questioning, he had deleted all emails that had the words Awlaki, jihad, Taliban, and Yemen from his email account.

Was the violence in Madhya Pradesh during the 2nd April Dalit protests paid for?

0

As per reports in Dainik Jagran, miscreants were allegedly paid money, anything between Rs. 200 to Rs. 500 to stage violent protests in Madhya Pradesh during the 2nd April Bharat Bandh call. As per reports, some of the protestors who are detained, are labourers who were paid to carry out violent protests for about two hours. However, it is not yet clear who brought them and paid for the allegedly staged violent protests. According to police, even the ‘protestors’ are not able to identify who brought them to ‘protest’. The miscreants were presented before the court and sent to jail.

As per reports, the planning for ‘staged’ violence was done days before the call of Bharat Bandh was made. It is reported that days before the Bandh call, people in adjoining areas of Gwalior, like Murar and Thatipur, were called and told that the reservation is being withdrawn. A day before the Bandh call, people were gathered and paid money to participate in the rally. According to TI (Town Inspector), Murar, Ajay Pawar, the contractors who work with the labourers said that the labourers did not turn up for work that day since they were paid more elsewhere.

On 2nd April, Dalit organisations called a nationwide Bharat Bandh in order to protest against the Supreme Court order, which had sought to prevent the misuse of the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The two-judge bench which was examining whether safeguards could be put in place so that the said act isn’t misused issued the directions which included, there won’t be an absolute bar on getting anticipatory bail if there is no prima facie case. The court also banned automatic arrests and registration of criminal cases under this act.

The Modi government had filed a review petition in the Supreme Court against this ruling which contends that the order will weaken the provision of this act, which could result in more violence against Dalits.

Despite the Modi government working towards trying to get the stringent procedures restored, a call for Bharat Bandh was issued, which since then has spiralled into incidents of mass violence. Madhya Pradesh was especially hit hard with a mob in Gwalior allegedly firing shots.

Imran Khan depicted as Lord Shiva on social media, Pakistani Hindus raise objection

0

A photo of former Pakistani cricketer and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Imran Khan has reportedly gone viral on social media. In the picture, Imran Khan is depicted as Lord Shiva. The matter has raised protests and objections among Pakistani Hindus and according to reports, there was an uproar in the Parliament over the issue.

According to reports, the morphed image of Imran Khan as Lord Shiva has appeared on April 8th in a Facebook page titled ‘We love Nawaz Sharif, Shahbaz Sharif and PML(N). This was supposedly a fan page for the Nawaz Sharif’s party created by his supporters.

The picture went viral soon and several Hindu Pakistanis started condemning the image. There were demands to take the page down and people stated that the picture was deeply hurtful to the sentiments of Hindu citizens of Pakistan. Several Muslim individuals too have reportedly condemned the image.

According to reports, the image was meant to show Imran Khan as a sympathiser of Hindus and was meant to insinuate that he is not close to Muslims. Pakistan is scheduled to have general elections this year and the leading parties are campaigning intensely nowadays.

But the image has backfired on the political supporters of PML(N) and the outrage has also reached the Pakistani Parliament. Members of the People’s party of Pakistan which is run by the Bhuttos have accused the PML(N) of hurting the sentiments of Hindus. Parliamentarian Naresh Lal stated that the image is deeply offensive to more than four million Hindus living in Pakistan. Another parliamentarian Lal Chand Malhi stated that the image is part of a vicious online campaign to target the minority Hindus in Pakistan.

Following the uproar, the speaker of the National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq directed the interior ministry to take action on any groups or individuals involved in posting blasphemous material aimed to hurt Hindus.

Imran Khan’s PTI has stated that his party fully supports Hindus and such material is being generated and propagated by his political opponents.

Watch: Hyderabad’s Osmania Hospital infested with stray dogs and cats

0

Once the pride of the Nizams, government aided Osmania Hospital now lies in shambles, with stray dogs and cats roaming around freely in the hospital premises, creating a ruckus. Innumerable dogs and cats have been seen running around the hospital wards.

Reports have emerged that these umpteen number of stray animals seen roaming around the hospital wards are a constant threat to the patients and their attendants. These animals have often been seen sleeping on patient beds, thereby increasing threat of infection to patients and contaminating the medicines.

While the problem of stray animals inside the hospital is not new, a video which has recently gone viral on social media reminding people of the horrific condition of the hospital. Reportedly, when hospital authorities were approached, they responded with a very casual and callous attitude. According to them, there are five entrances to the hospital and it is very difficult to stop the animals from entering the premises.

In December last year, the dreary conditions of the hospital came to limelight when face of the body of U. Madhu was eaten up by rodents in the mortuary. Officials had reportedly given the excuse that their hands were tied on this issue as the Integrity Hospital Facility Management that deals with pest control was equipped only to treat insects and bed bugs. Last year in January, too, the menace of stray cats and dogs in the hospital had erupted.

One of the walls of the building, according to the authorities, is also broken. Since the property is under dispute, the wall cannot be rebuilt, thus allowing these animals to have a free run. They also said that the officials from the municipal corporation clear the premises once in every three days, and nothing else can be done to curb this situation.

This is not the first time, Hyderabad’s Osmania General Hospital, is in news. Earlier too, there have been reports on the pathetic conditions of the hospitals, but somehow the government seems very casual and refuse to take any concrete measures to improve the iconic hospital’s conditions.

Review – Secret Empires: How the American Political Class Hides Corruption and Enriches Family and Friends, by Peter Schweizer

0

Corruption in and of the political class has evolved over the years. Gone are the days when Louisiana congressman William Jefferson was found to have stashed “$90,000 in bribes in his freezer“, or “Congressman Randy “Duke” Cunningham who created a “bribery menu” that netted him $2.4 million.” The reason for this evolution is that “Politicians are like the rest of us in that they avoid overtly criminal or publicly embarrassing behaviour.” In India, politicians are refreshingly less concerned with embarrassing behaviour, and usually, place the fear of public embarrassment secondary to the pursuit of self. In the United States, political corruption has evolved to avoid such public embarrassments and taken on two indirect forms – one is what the author calls “corruption by proxy” and the other is “smash and grab.”

Peter’s book is a fact-laden ride through the morass of political corruption in the United States, and the picture on both sides of the political aisle is not pretty at all.

Like most enterprising people, and politicians are nothing if not entrepreneurial by nature, politicians too have adopted several ways of exponentially increasing their personal wealth by leveraging their political office, while at the same time avoiding disclosure rules put in place that would attract negative public scrutiny. While American media has spent the better part of 2017 and 2018 in a manic exercise to uncover venality in the Donald Trump administration, this book gives us a look at some rather curious coincidences that occurred during the tenure of President Obama.

From among all the examples the author cites, let’s look at four.

One

The Vice President of the United States arrives in China, is welcomed by “Chinese children carrying flowers“, and has intense discussions with his Chinese counterparts, including the Chinese Vice-President and President, and which involves a marathon five-hour session with Xi, the Chinese President. Hawkish Chinese posturing in the East China Sea is not once discussed in those five hours.

There is nothing amiss in this, right? Absolutely not, so far. Let’s continue. The Vice-President is accompanied by his son, who is a co-owner of an “a $2.4 billion private equity firm“. The other co-owner of this billion-dollar private equity fund is the stepson of the Secretary of State of the United States. Less than two weeks after the Vice President’s trip, the son secures an exclusive and unprecedented deal with the Chinese. His private equity firm announces the setting up of a joint venture with the Bank of China to create an investment fund formed in the Chinese government’s Shanghai Free-Trade Zone. “[B]y operating from the Shanghai Free-Trade Zone they could take Chinese government funds and invest there, or take them out of the country and invest them in the United States or elsewhere. No one else had such an arrangement in China.” [bold emphasis mine]

“The Chinese government’s deal in December 2013 with the sons of America’s vice president and secretary of state occurred in lockstep with aggressive territorial claims it was making in the Pacific.”

Shocking? Or Not? The carrot of an unprecedented financial arrangement with the sons of the most powerful people in the US President’s cabinet ensured escape from the stick, right? Who were these people? Who was the president?

Chris Heinz was one of the co-owners of Rosemont Capital, the billion-dollar investment fund, and whose mother married Senator John Kerry in 1995. John Kerry was the United States Secretary of State from 2013 to 2017. The second co-owner was Hunter Biden, son of United States Vice President, Joseph Biden.

You see, the reason all this was supposedly legal was that “the FCPA prevents American corporations from hiring or doing special business deals with the children of foreign officials. It does not prevent foreign entities from hiring or doing special deals with the children of American officials.” What a fascinating and convenient loophole.

Obviously, the people involved strongly denied any wrongdoing and suggestions that the Vice President or the Secretary of State had in any way influenced the first-of-its-kind partnership between the Bank of China and an investment fund co-owned by his son.

As Peter writes, “if a politician or a politician’s spouse directly gets a big payday, it would be illegal to hide. Failing to report it would be a violation of federal law. Yet failing to report that their adult child or friend got a big payday as a result of the politician’s policy actions is not against any law. It is “offshore.”

The name of the investment firm was BHR (Bohai Harvest RST ). “Bohai (or Bo Hai), the innermost gulf of the Yellow Sea, was a reference to the Chinese stake in the company. The “RS” referred to Rosemont Seneca.”

The investment saga continued. In December 2014, “the Biden-and-Kerry-linked BHR became, in Bohai’s words, an “anchor investor” in China General Nuclear Power Corporation…”

“In 2015, BHR joined forces with the automotive subsidiary of the Chinese state-owned military aviation contractor Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC) to buy American “dual-use” parts manufacturer Henniges. … AVIC owns 50 percent of the military arms business of CATIC—the China National Aero-Technology Import and Export Corporation … and produces a wide array of fighter and bomber aircraft, transports, and drones—primarily designed to compete with the United States.”

All this happened under then President Barack Obama’s watch. It does make you wonder why you didn’t hear any outrage in the American media about these very, very, very blatant conflicts of interest, why you didn’t hear talk-show hosts make a hue and cry about crony capitalism, and so on. It does.

Two

The enterprising ventures of the Vice President and the Secretary of State were not restricted to China. In three years, between 2014 and 2017, the US Vice President Joe Biden made five trips to Ukraine, in addition to consulting “regularly with the Ukrainian president by telephone.”

Why you may wonder. Why I ask.

Peter writes that both “Joe Biden and John Kerry championed $1.8 billion in taxpayer-backed loans to be given to Ukraine courtesy of the IMF.” The money would be used to “keep the country’s financial markets liquid” and most of that $1.8 billion “would go through Kolomoisky’s PrivatBank. And more than $1 billion from Privat just simply disappeared.” [bold emphasis mine]

No, no, no, no, no – this is not India we are talking about, this was not some businessman we are talking about who scammed the Indian financial system of thousands of crores of rupees and then brazened it out, confident in the knowledge that the Indian political and legal system would bend over backwards to protect him. No. This is Ukraine we are talking about.

First off, who is Kolomoisky and what is PrivatBank?

Ihor Kolomoisky is a notorious Ukranian oligarch, is the owner of a massive energy company, Burisma [remember this name], apart from controlling the country’s largest bank, PrivatBank. His notoriety seems to rest on his “reportedly violent an brutal business practices.” Rivals have accused Kolomoisky of being involved in “murders and beatings.” Furthermore, Kolomoisky “holds Ukrainian, Israeli, and Cypriot passports, which is a problem because the Ukrainian constitution forbids dual citizenship. When asked about that fact Kolomoisky quipped, “The constitution prohibits double citizenship but triple citizenship is not forbidden.” Cue the canned laughter and applause. Does anyone know of Indian businessmen who allegedly own multiple passports, in violation of Indian law? The scion of an Indian political dynasty had once listed his nationality as British, despite being an Indian passport holder. As best as memory serves me, nothing ever came out of that violation.

Peter writes that Devon Archer (Devon who? Devon Archer was Managing Partner of Rosemont Ventures. Now you get it!) visited the White House on April 16, 2014, for a private meeting with US Vice President Joe Biden. Six days later, on April 21, “Vice President Joe Biden landed in Kiev for a series of high-level meetings with Ukrainian officials. The vice president was bringing with him highly welcomed terms of a United States Agency for International Development (USAID) program to assist the Ukrainian natural gas industry, and promises of more U.S. financial assistance and loans.” The next day, on April 22,  “there was a public announcement that Devon Archer had been asked to join the board of Burisma. Three weeks after that, on May 13, it was announced that Hunter Biden would join, too.” Peter writes that Hunter Biden had little or no experience in Ukranian law or the energy business. Curious, innit? Peter writes that even in a country as corrupt at Ukraine, Burisma stood out for its corruption.

What happened to that money, and how did it disappear?

It seems that “more than forty Ukrainian firms owned by fifty-four offshore entities registered in Caribbean, American, and Cypriot jurisdictions and linked to or affiliated with the Privat Group of companies, took out loans from PrivatBank in Ukraine to the value of $1.8 billion.

…

By December 2016, Ukrainian authorities were forced to nationalize Kolomoisky’s PrivatBank when it was discovered that the bank was collecting savings from Ukrainians.”

The Ukranian authorities made an effort, or a pretence – it is difficult to say which – to bring Burisma’s founder, Mykola Zlochevsky, to book. In April 2016, they seized his property, and Zlochevsky fled the country, after which he was placed on Ukraine’s wanted list. “The Ukrainian Prosecutor General’s Office actually seized Burisma’s gas wells. Tax authorities began investigating him for suspicion of tax evasion.” But then, like all investigations into allegations of corruption against the high and mighty in highly corrupt countries, like Ukraine, the investigations came to a grinding halt. How so? In January 2017, US Vice President Joe Biden was scheduled to land in Ukraine. “Four days before Biden arrived, Burisma made a dramatic announcement: the Ukrainian criminal investigations into the company and its founder had been ended by Ukrainian government prosecutors.”

Does this saga sound familiar to Indians? Any resemblance to the almost infinite scams perpetrated in India, including the latest escapade between Nirav Modi and the Punjab National Bank are complete coincidences. Every single case of corruption against the high and mighty has followed a template similar to the Ukranian tale you read above. Whether it is media moghuls, or liquor barons, or jewellery tycoons, investigations into corruption inevitable stall, and years later, the corrupt walk free as ever, their heads held high, unburdened by the guilt of their crimes. If some Indian politicians are rumoured to have a soft corner for high-priced Uzbek call-girls and boys, their business practices seemed closer to that of Ukranian oligarchs.

Three

Senator Mitch McConnell has been the Senate majority leader in the United States since 2015, is the longest-serving U.S. Senator in Kentucky history – in summary, a formidable politician. Almost three decades ago, in 1989, “just after the Tiananmen Square massacre, McConnell gave a hard-line speech at the University of Louisville.”

Four years later, McConnell married Elaine Chao. Elaine Chao is the daughter of Chinese immigrant James Chao, who came to the United States in 1958. Elaine Chao made a career in Washington and became a White House fellow during the Reagan administration and later chairman of the Federal Maritime Commission. She is currently the Secretary of Transportation in the Donald Trump administration.

In 2000, McConnell cosponsored S.2277, which aimed to “get rid of a requirement that Congress had put in place following the Tiananmen Square massacre for annual certification that the country was making progress on human rights to retain its trade status.”

In December 1993, “Senator McConnell found himself in Beijing for a series of private meetings with the most senior officials in the Chinese government. … The meetings were arranged by McConnell’s new father-in-law, James Chao, and came at the invitation of the China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC).”

In 1999, when the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations chairman Senator Jesse Helms introduced the Taiwan Security Enhancement Act, to show “support for a Taiwan independent of Chinese control“, the bill had “twenty-one cosponsors and heavy Republican support. But McConnell was not on the list.”

In September 2011, “when the Currency Exchange Rate Oversight Reform Act (S.1619) was introduced in the Senate,” to punish “countries with “fundamentally misaligned currenc[ies]” by tacking on import duties”, everyone knew the bill was aimed at China. Senator McConnell was “adamantly opposed to the bill.”

But he did more than just oppose the bill. “On October 6, 2011, he attempted to waylay the Senate majority leader, Senator Harry Reid, from taking the bill to a vote, by suspending rules on the Senate floor and introducing amendments. … Reid then used a version of a rare procedure called the “nuclear option” to change the Senate rules that passed by the Democratic majority of the Senate and left McConnell “fuming.” On October 11, 2011, the bill passed with a 63–35 vote. McConnell voted against the measure.”

Obviously, it would be difficult to argue for anyone that Senator Mitch McConnell’s change in his positions on China were coincidental and not related in any way to his marriage to Elaine Chao. Strangely enough, McConnell has escaped the kind of sharp scrutiny that’s been par for the course for Donald Trump and his family.

Four

With Barack Obama himself, Peter suggests that the Democrat President’s tenure was marked by a form of corruption he calls “smash and grab“.

In his words, this is how “smash and grab” in government works:

“Say there is a particular company or industry with large assets. The government, by their words or policies, “smashes” the industry on the grounds that it is bad, destructive, or dangerous. This is often done because an industry or company is deemed harmful to the environment or damage to public health, or it exploits vulnerable people. Once “smashed,” the valuation of that industry or company drops dramatically. But then something else happens. Investors or financiers closely tied to that politician suddenly buy the company or buy into the industry for pennies on the dollar. The company or industry is then resurrected to its previous lustre and its valuations rise dramatically under new owners who have close ties to the politicians.”

And how did the “smash and grab” work with Obama’s patronage?

One particularly egregious example is the case of for-profit schools, that received as much as $32 billion a year in federal student aid. In 2011, during the first term of the Obama presidency, when the “Department of Education announced the implementation of a so-called gainful employment rule, which would require for-profit schools to track the performance of their graduates in the job marketplace. Those programs that did not deliver good outcomes would be cut off from federal grants and federally backed student loans.” The curious case is that even as this was happening, “senior Department of Education officials were actively communicating with hedge fund investors that were “shorting” (betting that prices would go down) for-profit college stocks based on the new rules.”

By October 2015 the Department of Defense put the University of Phoenix on probation for “potential deceptive advertising, sale or marketing of its services to students“. Even though fifteen schools were alleged to have committed similar offences, only four, including the Apollo Education Group that ran the University of Phoenix, were suspended. Peter Levine, acting undersecretary of defence would later call the process “crappy.”

The results were immediate – “the company’s stock price declined from $11.29 a share in October 2015 to $6.38 by January 2016. The price in January 2016 was off over 90 percent from where the company’s stock was in January 2009 when Obama took office.” This was the smash.

The grab followed soon after – a group of investors swooped down to the rescue, and “on February 8, 2016, the holding company for the University of Phoenix (Apollo Education Group) announced that it was being sold. The transaction was valued at $1.1 billion. … It is worth restating that the company, before the regulatory onslaught during Obama’s tenure, had been worth almost nine times that price.”

Where did Obama figure in all this, would be the natural question.

Included in the group of investors that bought the Apollo Education Group was “President Obama’s best friend.” Another smaller player in the group was the Vistria Group. Why? Before the sale required the approval of the Department of Education were, of course, Vistria’s Tony Miller used to be the number two official in the Department. And what about the suspension of funds to the University? A short but successful lobbying campaign with the Pentagon saw that suspension being lifted. After the sale, Tony Miller became the chairman of the board. Just like that.

Then there is the sordid saga of John Rogers, George Soros, Tom Steyer, Heather Zichal and Cheniere, and Penny Pritzker.

As the book makes clear, Peter’s scrutiny is not exclusive to the Democrats. Republicans too get their share of the spotlight. But, the point to be made, in Peter’s words, is that “the current level of media attention stands in sharp contrast to the lack of reporting by many of the same news outlets over the previous eight years on transactions involving Trump’s predecessors or senior members on Capitol Hill. This yawning gap is unhealthy. My frustration is not that the solid reporting on Trump has been too tough but that the reporting on the Obama administration was way too soft or in some cases nonexistent.” [bold emphasis mine]

Peter Schweizer’s detailed and well-researched book is a stinging indictment of both Republicans and Democrats in the United States.

For me, the parallels one can draw with politicians in India are blindingly obvious. As India’s economy adds a trillion dollars to its GDP every few years or so, the scope and opportunities for avaricious politicians to line their pockets with tens of millions of dollars also grow commensurately. Unlike the United States, Indian investigative agencies have long abandoned any pretence at being interested in cracking down on political corruption. Bleak as the outlook is for the United States in tackling such political corruption, the prognosis for the Indian republic is much worse, and with no hope in sight either.

The book could well have been named “Secret Empires: How the Indian Political Class Hides Corruption…”. One waits for an intrepid and honest journalist to write that book on the connections between Indian politicians and businessmen. One waits.

Punjab govt seeks conviction of its own minister Navjot Singh Sidhu in a 1988 road rage case

0

In a possible friction inducing move, the Amarinder Singh led Punjab government has reportedly sought the conviction of its own government minister Navjot Singh Sidhu in a 1988 road rage case. Sidhu is currently the Minister of local government, tourism, cultural affairs and museums in the Punjab government.

As per an ANI report, the lawyer representing the Punjab government informed the Supreme Court that Sidhu’s statement denying involvement in the case was false:

Under this case, it has been alleged that Sidhu struck blows on an individual named Gurnam Singh in a road rage incident. One of Sidhu’s blows, unfortunately, struck Gurnam on the parietal region of his left head which caused subdural haemorrhage resulting in his death.

A lower court had acquitted Sidhu in this matter while the High Court reversed it and awarded a three year suspended sentence, pending an appeal in the Supreme Court.

Media reports have claimed that the Supreme Court has been told by the Punjab government to uphold Sidhu’s conviction. Sidhu was earlier sentenced to three years in jail by the Punjab and Haryana High Court. The Punjab government didn’t engage any senior counsel in this matter, instead of the advocate who appeared, informed the apex court that the High Court’s order was perfectly valid in convicting Sidhu for culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

There’s incidentally another angle to the case that the complainants have sought the enhancement of Sidhu’s jail sentence by demanding that he be convicted of murder. Hence with the Punjab government affirming the past conviction of Sidhu, it negates Punjab government’s need to argue in favour of enhancing the punishment.

Why is it easier for Congress to hold on to its allies as compared to the BJP?

0

A comparison of the allies of NDA and UPA throws an interesting observation. The UPA allies are more supportive of the Congress than the NDA allies are of the BJP. Rather some of them are more critical than even opposition parties as far as the BJP is concerned. Also, the allies of the Congress have a more loyal and stable bond with it than do the allies of the BJP with their main alliance partner. Whether it is KCR in Telangana state or Didi in West Bengal and Naidu in Andhra, the Congress party is an immediate threat. In spite of this, they seem to be willing to do business with the party, whereas with the BJP, the reverse seems to be the case. Why is it so?

The answer to this lies in recent political history.

Let us examine it from the ‘Grand old party’s’ side first. The Congress was for the first time decimated in a southern stronghold, Tamil Nadu, a half-century back by the DMK. Today, it is one of its most stable alliance partners. Lalu Yadav sent the congress packing from Bihar and so did Mulayam in UP. Today, both of them are either in alliance or at least friendly parties for the Congress. And at the same time, it has gone from bad to worse in all these states. All that the Congress could bargain for in these states would be a few seats; that is all. Yet, in election after election, it continues to ride piggy-back on these parties without ever bothering to build itself organizationally. So it is that these regional parties do not consider it as a threat.

The case of the BJP is entirely different. It is a party that is hungry for growth. Even where it is in an alliance, it continues to strive for its own growth. In some cases, it has even outgrown its partner; for example, the Shiv Sena in Maharashtra. That is why it is feared by foes and friends alike. Mamata Banerjee in West Bengal fears the BJP more than the CPM or the Congress for this reason. So do the likes of Naveen, Nitish, Naidu, Uddhav or the Akalis.

Another possible reason is that while it may be ready to bend a little, it will not bow. Within reasonable limits, it may be willing to accommodate, but beyond that, it is ready to let go and move on. Thus, it looks at its own long-term growth and is ready to forego the short-term gains of appeasement, accepting the setbacks. The party also, by now, fully aware that the parties come to it only when it is strong enough to form a government and are ever ready to ditch at a convenient moment, never relies on them for strength. While alliance can bring numbers, strength can only come from within and by its own growth.

On the other hand, it is the other way round with Congress. An alliance with the party has strengthened the regional parties to its detriment, to the extent of its near annihilation. Thus while it may continue to be a darling of its allies, it can never hope to come to power in any of these states on its own or even as a dominant alliance partner, neither now nor even in the near future.

Thus, while the BJP is a potential future threat, with the Congress, it is different. It is the Congress’ previous umbrella vote bank that the regional parties have actually poached about which it is not bothered.

While this entire debate can be viewed from a loyalty perspective, it is also noteworthy that it is also the confidence of BJP that makes it difficult for allies to keep their ties with the party intact. BJP, for now, is confident of winning state elections, and perhaps also the national election in 2019 all by itself. A threat the regional allies might not be willing to accept.
