How the ecosystem lives among us – A short story

0

It was 15th May 2014, and despondency hung heavy at Akbar Road and Janpath alike. Despite all the bluster and bravado of the past few months, the inevitability of what tomorrow would bring was sinking in. Of course, the magnitude of the disaster was something they were yet oblivious to, mercifully for them.

A gloomy faced general secretary was busy tending to the bonfire in the backyard, and two menials assisted him in adding files to the flames as they were brought in. A couple of convenient fire accidents, in key offices in Lutyens past few weeks ,had ensured a lighter load for them, but it was still enough for them to toil for hours on that hot May afternoon.

Inside, the Moon Face Mantri (MFM) and Chachaji were deep in discussion. They had the unenviable task of facing Mamma with the news. The coterie had, as usual, fed her what she wanted to hear – that the election was in the bag, and they would probably get a larger majority than last time. She had enquired, a couple of times, about the wave that everyone seemed to be taking about, but they had assured her that there was no such thing. But now finally the truth had to be told.

Bhaijan met them outside the house, his grim face reflecting their own mood, and led them to her presence. The usually blank face bore a deep frown, which deepened on seeing the trio. She sat cross armed and stared at them as they stood like unruly schoolboys in the Principal’s office. Without asking them to sit, she raised an eyebrow at Bhaijan, indicating that he could start speaking. Being the most trusted aide, he was the only one who dared to break the bad news, and now he did in detail.

The stony face slowly turned red as the aide spoke of a future that appeared dimmer and dimmer. After he had finished speaking, there was a long, painful silence as Mamma looked from one face to the other. Then MFM spoke up hesitatingly, “But don’t worry ma’am. It’s a matter of five years, if not less. And we have our contingency plans in place.”

Her stare was surpassed only by her tone in iciness, as she asked, “What contingency plan?”

Bhaijan was called away by an urgent call, leaving the two to explain. “We are leaving enough ’Deep Assets’ to ensure that they don’t have a smooth tenure. In fact, I would be surprised if they are able to get anything done at all. And if that doesn’t result in a mid-term election, it certainly won’t allow them to be re-elected after five years are over. Don’t you remember 2004?” Chachaji was at his smoothest, and was rewarded by a slight nod.

“Deep Assets?” She asked. “What Deep Assets?” Chachaji gave a semi-toothless grin and said, “We have a robust ecosystem in place. We have been very generous in sharing our .. ahem… ‘profits’ and in patronising the right kind of people over the years. Media, Bureaucracy, Intelligentsia … you name it, they’ve been our beneficiaries. It’s these people who will help us out in our times of difficulty.”

“Besides,” butted in MFM not wanting Chachaji to shine alone, “there are enough policy “Time Bombs” that will keep them on their toes for a while. The Pay Commission itself will ensure that no one is satisfied, and give recommendations that will show the government in very bad light. There are reservation promises we have made to this group and that. Then there’s the subsidy bill from our populist schemes.”

Seeing the slight thaw in her icy demeanour, Chachaji felt encouraged to elaborate further. “For years we have built up a narrative about our secularism vis a vis the ‘communalism’ of the saffron brigade. Now’s the time for us to say “we told you so!” India is a violent country. Every day there are dozens of murders, lynchings, arson, rapes, suicides… Been going on for ever, and bound to continue. But now, we will make people believe that each such crime is due to the hate that the ruling dispensation has – for minorities, for Dalits – whoever the victim may be. We will ensure media outrage, candle-lit marches, dharnas…”

“Hmmm…” she stared at the wall pensively. “But are you sure that the people will fall for that?” “Oh! Our biggest weapon is doubt. Said MFM. Put doubts in people’s minds, and once the narrative is repeated often enough through different sources, even the staunchest of their supporters will start having some doubts. And it’s not as if we have to prove anything in any court – just make them look bad again and again, at every opportunity, till people actually start believing it.”

“We will create doubts about every step they take. Added Chachaji. Every action, every policy, every scheme. We’ll blindly call everything a failure. We’ll create doubts about every institution – the RBI, Election Commission, the Judiciary, the banking system. We have most of the media and a lot of credible voices under our obligations – economists, professors, analysts, NGOs, activists. They’ll all sing our tune.”

“But won’t they have an advantage once they’re in power? Why should the ecosystem continue to support us?” She asked. MFM and Chachaji looked at each other, amazed that someone who had been at the helm of affairs for so long could be so out of touch with reality. “No no Ma’am.” MFM blurted. “You see, these fools want to actually provide a ‘clean’ government.

That would deprive the entire ecosystem of the lucre they have become so used to. And if they actually want things to get done, the babus will have to work. They won’t like that either. They will do anything to restore status quo ante of no work and all money – nudged along by us of course. As we know so well, it’s the bureaucracy that is responsible for execution, and no matter how good any policy is, if we sabotage the execution, it will all end up in naught.”

“And the corruption cases? Won’t they go on a witch hunt after all of us? What if we land up in jail?” She asked worriedly. Chachaji smiled and said, “Oh they will try. But the ecosystem is widespread, and includes the entire law and order system. The investigative agencies will file half-hearted cases, and the judges won’t be able to rule against us even if they want to. Besides, we have covered our tracks pretty well. So the cases will get dismissed one by one, and then we can cry political vendetta. That would help us tremendously in the next elections.”

“And then of course, we won’t let parliament function at all. We will keep disrupting it on some pretext or the other, so that they can’t make any worthwhile legislation.” MFM chimed in. “And we will keep crying about the economy. Again, it’s the perception which matters. We can always find something to cry about even if it’s doing reasonably well, and sow doubts in people’s minds.”

“And you think all this will ensure our return in 2019?” She asked. “Of course.” Chachaji replied confidently. “All this, combined with our trump card – divide and rule. Religion. Caste. Region. We will pit lower castes against upper, Muslims against Hindus, States against the centre. Our job is to ensure that the government is busy dealing with crises, clashes and agitations. So busy that they don’t get any time for ‘development’ that they take so much pride in. Because heaven help us if they manage to do even a portion of what they have done in Gujarat. We can forget getting re-elected ever.”

MFM glared at Chachaji. “Are we here to to appease her fears or to increase them?” He thought. “But don’t worry ma’am. We won’t allow that to happen. Trust us.” He said out aloud, trying to retrieve the situation. She wasn’t fully convinced, but was in a slightly better mood by the time the two left. Back in the car, the two heaved a sigh of relief. “Tell me Chachaji,” MFM asked “Even if we place ourselves at an advantage in 2019 as planned, what will we do about the Prince? We can never win with him at the helm.”

“I’ve thought of that too.” Said the wily old fox grinning ear to ear. “We give him a free run the next few years. Make him believe that he’s the biggest leader since Gandhiji, feed him only what he wants to hear. He will do what he’s best at – shoot himself on his foot so many times that by the time elections come around, he’ll be ready to step down on his own.”

“That’s when I will take over.” Both of them thought, but said nothing.

How the Hajj subsidy ended, and no, it was not to uphold secularism

0

The Constitution of India is supposed to be secular in character. But those who ruled the country and the Supreme Court, which is supposed to uphold the Constitution of India, have not applied it in its true spirit on many occasions. The Hajj issue is one of those instances where the constitution has been twisted and misinterpreted to further the goals of pseudo-secularism.

The issue of Hajj Subsidy has been a contentious social, economic and political issue in India in recent times. Socially, this policy is argued to be discriminatory against non-Muslims, Economically it is a burden on the taxpayers, and Politically it continued to be a symbol of Muslim appeasement and vote bank politics.

It was reported earlier today that the Hajj subsidy was likely to be fully withdrawn from this year. This was done following a Supreme Court order in 2012, which asked the government to withdraw the subsidies in 10 years. While it may appear to be a ‘secular’ decision by the apex court, the honourable court had relied on the Holy Quran on many occasions while asking the government to phase out the Hajj subsidy.

Chronology of birth and end of Hajj subsidy policy

1932 : British colonial government enacted The Port Haj Committees Act. It provided for government funded Haj Committee and named Bombay and Calcutta as two embarkation points for Haj.

1959:  Indian Parliament repealed the 1932 Act and enacted Haj Committee Act, 1959

2002 : The Haj Committee act 1959 was amended

2011 : A bench of two judges Markandey Katju and Gyan Sudha Misra upheld the Haj policy in the case Prafull Goradia vs Union Of India. It said that Haj policy did not violate Article 27 of the constitution, which says that No person shall be compelled to pay any taxes, the proceeds of which are specifically appropriated in payment of expenses for the promotion or maintenance of any particular religion or religions denomination.

2012:  Responding to various petitions, some of which by tour operators that claimed that their business was impacted by Hajj policy, the court ruled that the Hajj policy was in violation of the Holy Quran. It subsequently asked the government to phase out the policy within a period of 10 years from the date of judgement in the case Union Of India & Ors vs Rafique Shaikh Bhikan & Anr.

Justice Katju & Misra fail to find Hajj subsidy ‘unconstitutional’

Prafull Gorodia, a former Rajya Sabha MP from the BJP petitioned filed a writ petition under the Article 32 of the Indian constitution. Article 32 empowers every citizen of India to approach the Supreme court directly if any of the fundamental rights are violated by the state. Mr Gorodia stated that Haj policy was in violation of Article 27.

What does the Article 27 say? It says :

Freedom as to payment of taxes for promotion of any particular religion: No person shall be compelled to pay any taxes, the proceeds of which are specifically appropriated in payment of expenses for the promotion or maintenance of any particular religion or religions denomination

The taxpayer must not be made to pay for expenses for the promotion or maintenance of any religion. Hajj is an essential part of Islam and a Muslim in mandated to undertake this pilgrimage to maintain his or faith. Thus the petitioner claimed that the Haj Committee act, 2002 violated this article. But justice Katju and Misra had some other logic. In their judgement they said (emphasis added):

In our opinion Article 27 would be violated if a substantial part of the entire income tax collected in India, or a substantial part of the entire central excise or the customs duties or sales tax, or a substantial part of any other tax collected in India, were to be utilized for promotion or maintenance of any particular religion or religious denomination.

In other words, suppose 25 per cent of the entire income tax collected in India was utilized for promoting or maintaining any particular religion or religious denomination, that, in our opinion, would be violative of Article 27 of the Constitution. […]

Thus, it is nowhere mentioned in the Writ Petition as to what percentage of any particular tax has been utilized for the purpose of the Haj pilgrimage. [..]

In our opinion, if only a relatively small part of any tax collected is utilized for providing some conveniences or facilities or concessions to any religious denomination, that would not be violative of Article 27 of the Constitution. It is only when a substantial part of the tax is utilized for any particular religion that Article 27 would be violated.

As per their understanding, Article 27 would be violated only if the state used a substantial part of the taxes to fund a religion and it would not violate the constitution if it consumed a small part.

This line of argument is frankly saddening. They went on to say that that “secularism as espoused by Nehru is intact”, before signing their judgement (emphasis added):

It may be mentioned that when India became independent in 1947 there were partition riots in many parts of the sub-continent, and a large number of people were killed, injured and displaced. Religious passions were inflamed at that time, and when passions are inflamed it is difficult to keep a cool head. It is the greatness of our founding fathers that under the leadership of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru they kept a cool head and decided to declare India a secular country instead of a Hindu country. This was a very difficult decision at that time because Pakistan had declared itself an Islamic State and hence there must have been tremendous pressure on Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and our other leaders to declare a Hindu State. It is their greatness that they resisted this pressure and kept a cool head and rightly declared India to be a secular state.

This is why despite all its tremendous diversity India is still united. In this sub-continent, with all its tremendous diversity (because 92 per cent of the people living in the sub continent are descendants of immigrants) the only policy which can work and provide for stability and progress is secularism and giving equal respect to all communities, sects, denominations, etc.

Why the Supreme Court asked to withdraw the subsidy

After the judgment by Justice Katju and Misra, it appeared as if the Hajj subsidy was to stay for longer time. However, there were other petitions, some by Hajj tour operators, which talked about issues other than ‘secularism’ or what Article 27. These petitions were admitted by the apex court, which went on to analyse various aspects of the subsidy.

In the 2012 judgement given by Justices Aftab Alam, Ranjana Prakash Desai (authored by Justice Aftab Alam), they ask the government to phase out the Haj subsidy in a matter of 10 years. But the reasons they cited were more about the Holy Quran than the Constitution of India. In the judgement of the case Union Of India & Ors vs Rafique Shaikh Bhikan & Anr, they write (emphasis added):

This Court has no claim to speak on behalf of all the Muslims of the country and it will be presumptuous for us to try to tell the Muslims what is for them a good or bad religious practice. Nevertheless, we have no doubt that a very large majority of Muslims applying to the Haj Committee for going to Hajj would not be aware of the economics of their pilgrimage and if all the facts are made known a good many of the pilgrims would not be very comfortable in the knowledge that their Hajj is funded to a substantial extent by the Government.

We remind ourselves that the holy Quran in verse 97 in Surah 3, Al-e-Imran ordains as under:

“ 97. In it are manifest signs (for example), the Maqam (place) of Ibrahim (Abraham); whosoever enters it, he attains security. And Hajj (pilgrimage to Makkah) to the House (Ka’bah) is a duty that mankind owes to Allah, those who can afford the expenses (for one’s conveyance, provision and residence); and whoever disbelieves [i.e. denies Hajj (pilgrimage to Makkah), then he is a disbeliever of Allah], then Allah stands not in need of any of the Alamin (mankind, jinn and all that exists).”

We, therefore, direct the Central Government to progressively reduce the amount of subsidy so as to completely eliminate it within a period of 10 years from today.

The subsidy money may be more profitably used for upliftment of the community in education and other indices of social development.

It should be noted that the judgement doesn’t mention the Article 27 even once. Further it asks the government to use the money for welfare of a particular community, and not for any ‘secular’ development work.

Not surprisingly, the decision was well received by almost every party, including radical Muslim leaders like Asaduddin Owaisi, while the overt news of ‘Hajj subsidy withdrawn’ was well received by the Hindu groups. Today also the government reiterated that the subsidy amount will be used for educating Muslim girls and women and other schemes to empower the community.

BJP demands sedition charge against Kerala CPM leader Kodiyeri Balakrishnan for his alleged pro-China stand

0

Days after Kerala Chief Minister lauded North Korea’s Kim Jong Un, another CPM leader was caught allegedly praising North Korea while making pro-China statements. During the delegates meet of CPM Alappuzha district, CPM state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan reportedly said that the axis power formed by ‘capitalist countries’ like the USA, Japan, Australia and India are leading the forces to act against China.

Like Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Kodiyeri also praised North Korea for ‘utilizing funds for welfare schemes for strengthening army power in order to ensure survival for the country. Claiming that the North Korea is facing external threat from the USA, it is accumulating more arms.

Responding to the same, the BJP district president, S. Suresh, has demanded that the police initiate sedition proceedings against Kodiyeri. This statement had come at a time when there were incursions by China on the border. S. Suresh claimed that Kodiyeri’s remarks amounted to ‘challenging’ and ‘insulting’ the Indian Army, who are trying to check Chinese threat in the Doklam region.

Earlier, CM Vijayan had applauded North Korea for following a tough anti-USA agenda. No wonder the communists in India could double up as mini Kims themselves. You will not find any of the new age social justice warriors, Kanhaiya Kumar, Gurmehar Kaur and gang being critical of North Korea. Now we know, because secretly, they probably applaud Kim for ‘taking on’ the powerful US.

The only time some of them, or their friends, mentioned ever-mysterious North Korea is when Arun Shourie called some Indian media channels, which were not spewing venom against Narendra Modi, as “North Korean TV channels”. Which then makes Vijayan’s accolades for Kim a little ironic. Especially when CPM uses Kim in their posters to announce party gatherings in Kerala.

There is a very thin line between satire and reality and seems like CPIM crosses it way too often.

Stronger ties and renewed bonhomie visible after the first 2 days of PM Netanyahu’s India visit

0
The prime minister of Israel Mr Benjamin Netanyahu arrived in New Delhi on a historic visit on 14 January. This visit was long awaited, especially after bilateral relationships between the two countries showed fresh promise and greater dimensions after India’s PM Mr Narendra Modi visited Israel in July 2017

PM Modi’s visit was special in so many ways. Not only because he was the first ever Prime Minister of India to visit Israel, but also because what he planned not to do. Usually, as a step to not offend Arab nations and Palestinian authorities, most world leaders, when they visit Israel, also visit Ramallah, the Palestinian capital. PM Narendra Modi did not do that. The subtle messaging behind the step was not missed by foreign policy experts.

Ever since PM Modi came to power in 2014, India and Israel’s bilateral relationship has come out of the shadows. Vital point here being trade and defence deals have always happened between the two countries after diplomatic ties were established under then PM PV Narasimha Rao in 1992, But India has never highlighted it. The ongoing joke after 2014 was that India was “ready to put a ring on the finger”. Meaning India has started to openly acknowledge the strong relationship between the two nations. PM Netanyahu yesterday reaffirmed it when he stated, “India and Israel are a match made in heaven”

The bonhomie between the two countries is easily understood if one looks at the ease and comfort with which the two respective Prime Ministers greet each other. Both leaders share a very informal and warm bond which also signals the way relationship between the two countries has evolved so far. The Israeli PM has time and again asserted that India is to remain an all-weather friend for Israel.

Yesterday after being welcomed by the Indian PM himself, PM Netanyahu and his wife Sara visited the Teen Murti Chowk memorial which has been renamed to Teen Murti-Haifa chowk commemorating the sacrifice of Indian Soldiers in the Israeli city of Haifa.

Yesterday on 15th, after visiting Rajghat to pay homage to Mahatma Gandhi, Mr Netanyahu attended a grand welcome ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan in his honour and met Indian political leaders and diplomats. Later in the day both PM Netanyahu and PM Modi address the media where PM Modi expressed his pleasure over the booming bilateral co-operation between the two countries and called for policy and infrastructure development for facilitating people and business flow between two nations. Mr Netanyahu hailed PM Modi as a revolutionary leader and expressed gratitude to India on behalf of his people. He also pointed out the fact that in the 3000 years of co-existence as civilisations, PM Narendra Modi was the first Indian Leader to visit Israel. He praised India for being tolerant and nurturing and for never letting the Jews face persecution of any kind. He stated that he is the son of a historian and the world’s oldest scriptures are written in Sanskrit and Hebrew.

Later in the day, the two leaders attended the India Israel Business Summit. It is to be noted here that PM Netanyahu has brought with him the biggest ever business delegation of more than a hundred members. 9 MOUs were signed for co-operation on various fields ranging from cybersecurity, film co-operation and Air Transport Agreement to Homoeopathy, oil & gas and space science.

In the Business Summit address, PM Modi emphasised the need for technology and innovation to reach the common man and insisted how Israel, known as the world startup hub can help India’s people to achieve this goal.” India has size and scale, Israel has sharpness and edge”, the PM remarked.

Both leaders also launched a 40 million USD Israel-Indian development fund and urged the participating CEOs to invest and work on it.

Mr Netanyahu is visited Agra today with his wife Sara Netanyahu where they were warmly received by Chief Minister of UP Yogi Adityanath. He was greeted by traditional folk dancers and later proceeded to visit the Taj Mahal.

Muslim clerics arrested in Bihar for raping and killing a minor girl

0

Four Maulvies or Muslim clerics have been arrested by the police in connection with brutally murdering a minor girl by slashing a throat. This incident has been reported from the Adhang village in Purnia’s Jalalgarh police station region, in the state of Bihar.

As per the report, one of the accused raped her for over an year and when he discovered that she was pregnant, he and his accomplices decided to hatch a conspiracy to eliminate her and later disposed off her body in a maize field

After the postmortem was conducted on the recovered body, the police discovered her pregnancy and launched a probe in this matter. The police as a result arrested four people including three Muslim clerics and the uncle of the victim. The accused are named, Mohammed Mojahid, Mohammed Zafar, Mohammed Sadiq and Sahabudin.

As per the police officer named Rajkumar Shah, who led the investigation, the girl used to study in a madrasa near her home, where she got into an alleged relationship with Mohammed Sadiq. He allegedly proceeded to sexually exploit her under the guise of promising to marry her, which resulted in her getting pregnant.

After the pressure to marry her started building up on him, as per the News18 report, Sadiq allegedly along with the other Maulvis and the girl’s uncle hatched a conspiracy to kill her. The decision to kill her was allegedly taken in order to save the madrasas from getting a bad name. As a result they called the girl to a home on 4th January where they proceeded to brutally kill her and dispose off the body.

The Dainik Jagran and Dainik Bhaskar articles though claim that the girl was actually in a relationship with Mohammed Zafar. The Bhaskar article further claims that, some time later the Maulvi named Sadiq also fell in love with the girl and both started to sexually exploit her.

In order to crack the crime, the police questioned the aunt of the victim and used techniques like mobile surveillance to nab the accused, who have now been sent to jail.

Unfortunately the instances of Muslim clerics or Maulvies being accused of rape are nothing new.

We had reported in September about a Maulvi in Kashmir getting arrested in Kashmir for raping scores of young boys under the pretext of summoning jinns and driving away ‘evil eye’.

In January 2016 it was noted that a Maulvi was accused of raping a six year old student while he was giving her tuition classes. This incident was reported from Agra.

A Surat Maulvi was arrested in October, 2015 after he was accused of raping a 15 year old girl of his Madrasa, during the holy month of Ramzan.

No meeting between Congress President Rahul Gandhi and Benjamin Netanyahu in the Israeli PM’s itinerary

0

The Indian National Congress has always had a lukewarm relationship with Israel. One could put it on domestic vote bank politics or international pressures that during all the years of the Congress governments, the relationship between the two countries had not blossomed. It is only the under the Prime Ministerial tenure of Narendra Modi that India has finally warmed up to the sole democracy in the Middle East.

However, as the friendship between India and Israel is blooming in every respect, not every party in the political spectrum of Indian politics is enthusiastic about the India’s new friend. The Left Parties organized a protest against the Prime Minister of Israel on Monday in New Delhi which was attended by D Raja himself.

However, conspicuous was the absence of a meeting between the Congress President, Rahul Gandhi and Benjamin Netanyahu in the Israeli PM’s itinerary. The lack of convergence between the two dominant national political parties in the country on issues of foreign policy reflects poorly on the whole nation itself. It is pertinent to mention that the mother of the Congress President himself and ex-President of the Congress Party did pay the then Prime Minister of Israel, Ariel Sharon a courtesy call when the former visited India in 2003, during Vajpayee’s Prime Ministership. That is in stark contrast with the current leadership of the Congress which chooses to mock and play down Benjamin Netanyahu’s diplomatic visit to India.

The blossoming relationship between India and Israel has been one of the highlights of Narendra Modi’s foreign policy, and that the President of the Congress chooses to deride such a remarkable accomplishment for merely partisan politics is a sign that the 47-year old ‘Youth leader’ is yet to mature. And that immaturity is obvious from his antics on Social Media. The ‘Hugplomacy‘ video that was tweeted by the official handle of the Indian National Congress invited much criticism and flak from all sensible corners of the political spectrum. The video also presented the BJP with an easy opportunity to score another victory over its rivals on Social Media.

The less than warm response towards Israel by the dominant opposition party in India puts the future of Indo-Israel relations in some jeopardy. There has been a general feeling that the two countries have developed such a close relationship only due to an NDA government at the Center and should the Congress return to power in 2019, India will no longer be as much of a friend to Israel due to the Congress’s general Pro-Palestinian slant. A relationship as crucial as India and Israel’s should not depend on which political party is in power. It is not too much to expect that the opposition party be supportive of the central government’s foreign policy, especially when Indo-Israel ties provides both countries with great scope for a fruitful and fulfilling relationship. However, as their recent social media activity has shown, Rahul Gandhi is yet to mature as the President of the Indian National Congress.

‘Comedian’ deletes Twitter account after twitterati dig up his embarrassing jokes on muslims

0

Kunal Kamra, who has recently shot to fame for hating on Prime Minister Modi, has deactivated his Twitter account after his embarrassing jokes on Muslims were retweeted by Twitter users. Kamra tried to delete his old tweets before deactivating, but not before twitterati had taken screenshots.

While most of them were not even funny, many just seemed to be in poor taste and threatened to go against the image of a social justice warrior (SJW) that he recently created for himself like most comedians. Owing to the clout he has gathered due to his anti-Modi stand, these tweets may not have been appreciated by his ‘friends’.

Some even tagged his new friend Shehla Rashid, the freelance protestor who doubles up as student at JNU during her free time.

Shehla, who does not mind agreeing with Kamra when he spews hatred, doesn’t seem to have enjoyed this jibe.

He continued his deleting spree which could have offended his new found support base.

But it seems he got way too embarrassed by his jokes on Muslims, which he perhaps got tired of deleteing, that he just deactivated his account. As we gear up for 2019 general elections, factual inaccuracy and political propaganda in guise of comedy may be the flavour of the season. OpIndia reached out to Kunal to know his reasons for deactivating his account, but he has not yet responded. We will update the report if we hear back from him.

Update:

We got in touch with Mr. Kunal Kamra to get his version of the events. We asked him why he deactivated his twitter account and whether he deactivated because he was embarrassed of his past tweets now doing the rounds on twitter.

Mr. Kamra said that he deleted his twitter account because his number was made public, following which he got over 100 phone calls and messages. He says he quit twitter to preserve his sanity. He did not however elaborate as to how deleting his twitter account would have solved the problem of him getting phone calls as his number was leaked by other social media users and the screenshot was viral.

He said that his joke on Muslims, which is doing the rounds is hilarious and that he did it for 7 months on stage and got a laugh from the audience every single time. He says he deleted that joke because a joke like that is easy to construct. It is on the expense of the lesser privileged and he has outgrown that trope. He wants to punch up and not punch down. He said he did not delete it because he was embarrassed of scared of the ‘liberals’.

He also added that he may not return to twitter since it is a waste of time.

Editor’s note :

On the subject of Mr. Kamra’s number being made public, It was Mr. Kunal Kamra who had himself tweeted his number in 2015. It was that tweet that was retweeted by some on Social Media after his old tweets became viral.

Lucknow Medical scam accused recorded being extra careful due to ‘Tea-seller’s govt’ watching everyone

0

In August of 2017, it was reported by media outlets that a few medical colleges were giving admission to students, even though they were barred by the Supreme Court from doing so, due to lack of proper infrastructure being one of the factors.

Later, a medical college knocked on the doors of a Supreme Court bench (the CJI was part of it), which was hearing the case, with a plea that the case be withdrawn. The court consented, but the ruled that the college can’t seek permission from any court in the land, to admit students for the 2017-18 year.

Interestingly, the college then approached the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court, and incredibly a judge in contravention of the Supreme Court order gave permission to the college to admit students in the said year.

As per the CBI, it has evidence to prove that malpractices took place regarding the matter, with regards to the permission provided.

In September, it was reported that the CBI filed an FIR against Justice IM Quddusi and four others, with the former being a retired judge who served in the Allahabad, Orissa and Chhattisgarh High Courts. As per the report, Quddusi is alleged to be involved in a racket to open medical colleges in Uttar Pradesh.

Turns out the members of Prasad Education Trust, which was the owner of one of 46 medical colleges, had allegedly approached Quddusi and three others for settling a matter which involved a matter pending in the Supreme Court regarding permissions to set up medical colleges.

Now this matter seems to be in the news again, due to the transcripts which are part of conversations allegedly recorded by the CBI as part of its probe into the Lucknow Medical College scam. These transcripts were allegedly recorded sometime in September, 2017.

This transcript has been submitted by Prashant Bhushan in the annexures of his complaint, which calls for an inquiry against the Chief Justice in the matter where he claims are various allegations of misconduct. These transcripts have been sent to the four ‘rebel’ Supreme Court judges who few days ago gave a press conference against the Chief Justice and another judge named Justice Sikri.

The complaint signed by Bhushan, designated as the Convenor of the Campaign for Judicial Accountability and Reforms, calls for an inquiry against the CJI by either three or five supreme court judges.

As per the report, Bhushan had confronted the Chief Justice regarding the matter a couple of months ago, when the former demanded that the Chief Justice rescue himself from this case, which was refused.

These transcripts contain recordings of individuals like the retired Odisha HC judge I M Quddusi, alleged middleman Vishwanath Agarwala and B P Yadav of Prasad Education Trust and incidentally make for an interesting reading:

Image via TOI

In the above transcripts, the middlemen is seen talking about the “temple in Delhi and Allahabad”. B P Yadav, the owner of the Prasad Educational Trust later commented about the middleman taking ‘two’ from them and after the order is given, they would send Rs 1 crore to the Judge, thereby openly signalling an intent to bribe a judge.

The middleman then assured Yadav that the work would surely be completed but the ‘luggage’ would have to be delivered earlier. He also claimed that the ‘other party’ is saying no to any form of meeting as the ‘Tea Seller’s government’ is watching everyone. There may be no marks for guessing so to what is referred to as the ‘Tea seller’s government’.

The report claims that the phrases like luggage, prasad are keywords for bribe money.

Did you know these lesser known facts about our Republic Day Parade

0

26th January again dawns upon us, a day when we celebrate the enactment of our constitution, 68 years ago to this day.

One of the key attractions of the Republic Day is the parade on Rajpath in New Delhi, where various attractions include, meticulous march-pasts by regiments of the Indian armed-forces, the showcasing of India’s defence capabilities and tableaux from various states of the country. The ceremony as usual ends with a fly past by our air-force.

This year in an unprecedented move, the chief guests from the parade would be the leaders of 10 ASEAN countries which are: Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos and Brunei.

Besides this, another new addition to the parade is the All India Radio (AIR) tableaux which will feature PM Modi’s popular public outreach program Maan Ki Baat.

While these are commonly known facts about this year’s parade, these are a few lesser known facts about the parade as a whole which you might not have known:

Rajpath hasn’t always been the venue for the celebrations:

Hard to believe, considering how used to we have been to it. But the parade in its present form was only organised since 1955. From 1950-54 celebrations were held at different venues like Irwin Stadium, Red Fort, Ramlila Maidan.

Tickets for the parade

Yes you can get tickets, it’s not all passes. Passes are only for the front row which can be obtained from senior officials. For the rest, there’s reserved or unreserved seating which were priced Rs 500 and Rs 100 respectively. These were on sale from 13th to 25th January at various venues.

The Chief Guest:

France leads the tally with 5 guests, followed by 4 from Bhutan and dignitary from Russia have been invited thrice. Also there have been two dignitaries from Pakistan as well. Gov Gen Malik Ghulam Muhammad in 1955 and Food and Agricultural Minister Rana Abdul Hamid in 1965.

The beating retreat:

Not really a lesser known fact but the Republic Day festivities go on for three days with everything culminating with the Beating Retreat on 29th evening. This was first conceived in 1950’s after Nehru wanted something spectacular to honour the visit of Queen Elizabeth and Duke of Edinburgh and summoned Major G.A. Roberts who developed the Beating Retreat ceremony. This was then extended as an official ceremony in its current form.

A lot has changed in the country since the first Republic Day, and a lot hasn’t either, but today calls for a celebration of the Indian Democracy, and on that note we wish all you readers a Happy Republic Day.

Mevani demands removal of Republic TV journo, journalists say, ‘No need of your press conference’

0

Days after Republic TV journalist was heckled at Jignesh Mevani’s flop Yuva Hunkar Rally, Jignesh Mevani again targeted Republic TV, demanding removal of the journalist from the channel at his press conference in Chennai. However, he was snubbed by media persons of Chennai and the journalists walked out of his press conference in solidarity with Republic TV journalist. He was present for an event at the Quaid-e Milleth International Academy of Media Studies.

However, Mevani refused to speak as he saw a reporter of Republic TV among the media persons. He didn’t budge even after media persons assured him that the Republic journalist would not pose questions.

As per video uploaded by Republic, the conversation went something like this.

“Let the mike be removed” said Mevani

“You can’t demand that”, replied Shabbir Ahmed, a journalist with Times Now

“Then I will not [speak]”, Mevani replied

“Then leave it, we don’t want [the press conference]”, the same journalist replied.

Jignesh Mevani replied ,”I don’t mind” and left the premises.

Despite competitiveness amongst media houses, the show of solidarity against the bullying by Vadgam MLA was highly appreciated on social media.

However one handle from Chennai criticised media persons for boycotting Jignesh Mevani

It is amusing to see champions of freedom of press bully media persons who do not toe their line.
