According to the police, the accused, Prema, worked with Kiran at a mobile service provider store in Rajajinagar. The two had been in a relationship for nearly two years. Investigators believe the crime may be linked to anger after Kiran reportedly refused her marriage proposal.
Police said Prema called Kiran to her house in Anjananagar, which falls under the Byadarahalli police station limits, at a time when her family members were not at home. Kiran, who is from Chikkanayakanahalli in Tumakuru district, had plans to travel to Nelamangala but changed his plan and went to meet her instead.
During the investigation, officers found that Prema had told Kiran she had planned a “surprise” and promised him a good time with a “western-style proposal”. She then blindfolded him and tied his hands and legs with a rope, making him believe it was part of a romantic act. Soon after, she poured an inflammable liquid, suspected to be kerosene or petrol, over him and set him on fire. Kiran could not escape and died on the spot.

Neighbours heard his screams and noticed smoke coming from the house, after which they alerted the authorities. Fire and emergency services reached the spot quickly.
At first, Prema told the police it was a suicide, claiming she was in the bathroom when the incident happened. However, her statements kept changing, raising suspicion.
Police later found that the inflammable liquid had been arranged beforehand, pointing towards planning. They also seized her mobile phone, which is said to contain a recording of Kiran’s final moments. During questioning, she reportedly admitted to the crime.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (North-West) Nagesh DL said the investigation is still going on as they verify all details. Kiran’s body has been sent to Victoria Hospital for a postmortem, and police are waiting for a formal complaint from his family.
