Hoax emails, bomb threats to Delhi schools: Police track 400 emails to person from ‘NGO family’ with political links and Afzal Guru activism

The Delhi Police on Tuesday, January 14, informed that after months of investigation, they have managed to find the person (or persons) who have been sending hoax emails and bomb threats to Delhi schools.

In a press conference, Madhup Tiwari, the Special CP (law and order) informed that the Delhi Police have been investigating the case of hoax emails since February 12, 2024. Dozens of such emails have caused disruptions in studies, exams and the regular academic activities of schools in the national capital. Despite help from email platform providers, the usage of VPNs by the accused persons was making it difficult to trace them.

Finally, another email on January 8 provided a small technical window to trace the IP address of the sender(s) and using the window, the police finally managed to trace the emails to a ‘kid’. The kid was found to have sent a staggering 400 hoax emails.

CP Tiwari further informed that the police have found that the kid who sent the emails belongs to a family that runs an influential NGO with politicial links and has been involved with a civil society group that has been campaigning against Afzal Guru’s hanging. The police are currently investigating the extent of politicial connections of this ‘NGO family’ and whether the connections have anything to do with the emails.

More details in the case are awaited.
