‘If you have a womb, you are a woman’: Elon Musk’s post on womanhood triggers online firestorm

Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX and the owner of X, has once again found himself at the centre of a heated cultural debate after posting his views on womanhood, triggering widespread reactions across social media.

In a succinctly worded post on X, Musk argued that being a woman is a matter of biological fact rather than identity.

“If you have a womb, you are a woman. Otherwise, you are not,” he wrote. The comment spread rapidly, drawing both strong support and sharp criticism within hours.

A section of users backed Musk’s assertion, contending that biological definitions are being unnecessarily contested in modern discourse. One user remarked that it was remarkable to live in a time when “self-evident facts” needed to be restated, a comment Musk endorsed with a brief reply agreeing with the sentiment. Supporters argued that the backlash itself illustrated how discussions around gender have become detached from basic science.

Critics, however, challenged Musk’s framing, pointing to medical conditions that complicate such definitions. Some users cited Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser (MRKH) syndrome, a rare condition in which women are born without a uterus or with an underdeveloped one, to argue that Musk’s statement was reductive and failed to account for biological variations.

Defenders countered that the very fact that elementary biology could spark such intense controversy, even among highly educated audiences, was a telltale sign of the times. One commentator suggested that the exchange symbolised a historical moment where foundational concepts were being publicly disputed.

The post came against the backdrop of Musk’s increasingly vocal criticism of gender ideology. Just a day earlier, he had described his transgender daughter’s transition as a “tragic mental illness,” a remark made in response to a political jab from a Democrat. That comment had already drawn significant attention and criticism, adding further fuel to the ongoing debate.

The controversy also followed comments by California Governor Gavin Newsom, who told a podcaster that he wanted to see more trans children, presenting himself as a staunch supporter of pro-trans policies and LGBTQ rights. Newsom’s office later amplified the remarks by reposting a clip of the interview with a pointed message aimed at Musk: “We’re sorry your daughter hates you, Elon.”

Together, the exchanges have turned into a broader flashpoint involving politics, gender identity, biology, and free expression.
