On Wednesday (11th March), an unsuccessful attempt to assassinate former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah was made by one Kamal Singh Jamwal at a wedding. The accused, who was in an inebriated state, was caught and thrashed by Abdullah’s security detail. Later, Jamwal told the police that he had been planning to kill the 88-year-old National Conference (NC) leader for the last 20 years.
In the CCTV footage from the wedding, the 63-year-old is seen approaching Farooq Abdullah from behind. The footage shows the Jammu resident pointing a gun at him from point-blank range before firing a shot. The bullet missed the target, and Jamwal was immediately overpowered by Abdullah’s security guards.

Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary is reported to have ‘miraculously’ survived the shooting.
“Today, I got the opportunity, but he (Farooq Abdullah) was lucky to survive,” Jamwal told the police during questioning.
Reacting to the incident, Jammu and Kashmir CM and Farooq Abdullah’s son, Omar Abdullah wrote on X, “Allah is kind. My father had a very close shave. The details are sketchy at the moment but what is known is that a man with a loaded pistol was able to get within point blank range & discharge a shot. It was only the close protection team that deflected the shot & ensured that the assassination attempt failed. There are more questions than answers at the moment including but not limited to how someone was able to get this close to a Z+ NSG protected former CM.”
