A Muslim mob attacked and pelted stones at the Moghat police station in Khandwa, Madhya Pradesh, on Thursday (5th March) over an alleged social media post on Prophet Muhammad. The incident happened when a large number of Muslims surrounded the Moghat police station on Thursday night.
As per reports, the complainant, Mujahideen Qureshi, went to the police station to file a complaint regarding an allegedly ‘objectionable’ Instagram post about Prophet Muhammad. Soon, people from the Muslim community gathered outside the police station in large numbers and raised slogans. The police registered a case based on his complaint and detained a man.
The Police assured that action would be taken against the man. However, the mob was not convinced and created a ruckus at the police station. Some members of the mob grabbed TI Dhiresh Dharwal by the collar and pushed and shoved the police personnel present at the station.
Seeing the mob getting out of hand, the police called additional forces and used mild force to disperse the crowd. The police urged people to ignore rumours and maintain peace. A case was subsequently registered against 47 people, including 22 named and 25 unidentified individuals, for attacking the police station.
Speaking to the media about the incident, ASP Mahendra Taranekar said, “A post on social media was hurting religious sentiments, due to which some people gathered here to register an FIR… A case has been registered under BNS 199, and the accused has been rounded up immediately… Following this, some people mischievously gathered in the police station premises and put up absurd demands… Three station in-charges and the City Superintendent of Police were deployed to control the situation. A police force march was conducted to normalise the area… The public is urged to refrain from reacting to such posts on social media and to inform the station in charge instead…”

Some Muslims, who were part of the mob, also assaulted a woman who was passing through the area. About 8-10 people from the mob misbehaved with the woman and physically assaulted her. As a result, the woman suffered a head injury and swelling on her face. The terrified woman reached the police station and narrated the whole incident. Based on her complaint, the police registered a case and took several people into custody.
