On Friday (6th March), Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra courted controversy after claiming that those who do not support TMC cannot qualify as a ‘Bengali.’
During a sit-in protest against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in the State, Mahua Moitra declared, “I am telling everyone that you cannot be a Bengali if you don’t support TMC.”
She further claimed, “(Those who don’t support TMC) have no right to identify as a Bengali.”
The development comes ahead of the West Bengal election, where identity politics is set to take centre stage.
During the 2021 polls, TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee had attempted to polarise voters along ethnic lines and made objectionable remarks against non-Bengalis.
