Ghaziabad Police on 30 May arrested three individuals, including the father of the prime suspect Asad, in the May 28 stabbing death of 17-year-old Suryapratap Chauhan in the Khoda area’s Navneet Vihar Colony. As per a statement issued by the police, one of the accused said during the questioning that Nawab, father of the main accused Asad, had instructed his son to “finish the story”, after a dispute, interpreted as a directive to kill the victim.
Five people were named in the FIR filed in the case, Asad, his father Nawab, Farhan, Atif and Sarik Mewati. Among them, Nawab, Farhan and Sarik were arrested on Saturday. Notably, the main accused Asad was killed in a police encounter during a joint operation by Khoda and Indirapuram teams on 31st May. Acting on a tip-off that Asad was attempting to flee after collecting money from an associate, police intercepted him on a motorcycle.
Officials stated that Asad and his companion opened fire, injuring a constable, prompting retaliatory action in which Asad sustained critical bullet injuries. He was rushed to a hospital but declared dead. A country-made pistol and the motorcycle were recovered, while the second individual escaped and is being pursued. A ₹50,000 reward had been announced for Asad’s arrest prior to the encounter.
According to the police version shared from the interrogation of the arrested individuals, the incident stemmed from a dispute over bike riding. Farhan stated that on May 28, 2026, at approximately 3:00 PM, Asad had an altercation with Surya over the riding of a motorcycle. Asad subsequently informed his father, Nawab, and other accused persons about the incident. After that, the group hatched a plan to teach Surya a lesson.

Upon interrogation, accused Farhan said: On 28.05.26, at 15.00, Asad had an argument with Suryapratap over riding a bike. Asad… pic.twitter.com/L8I4EKpj49
As per Farhan, the group cornered Surya in Navneet Vihar, and Farhan gave a knife to Asad. At that moment, Nawab told his son to ‘finish his story’. After that, Asad stabbed Surya in the stomach. When the victim collapsed, the group thought that he has died, and fled from the scene.
Surya Chauhan was rescued by his friends soon after and was rushed to a hospital. However, he died later during the treatment. After his death, the police changed the case from attempt to murder to murder.
Notably, this account given by accused Farhan differs significantly from statements by Surya’s friends and family. They have alleged the argument erupted when Asad invited Surya along with friends Ayush and Vicky for Bakrid (Eid al-Adha) celebrations. Asad reportedly asked if Surya had ever seen a goat being slaughtered, and when he replied no, Asad offered to show him.
When Surya refused, Asad allegedly abused him with “halal taunts,” which escalated into an argument. It is alleged that the group attacked Surya following this argument.
Surya reportedly ran nearly 200 meters with a knife still embedded before collapsing. His family has described the killing as an attempt at a “human sacrifice” on Bakrid. His friend Vicky, who went with Surya to Asad’s home for Bakrid, said that the argument was over goat slaughter, and he didn’t mention any fight over bike.
Surya, a Class 11 student, succumbed to his injuries on May 29. The case was initially registered under attempt to murder and later converted to murder after his death.
Grieving family members, including mother Sunita, yesterday refused to perform Surya’s last rites after the body reached their house after the postmortem. They had demanded that the body would not be cremated until Asad was encountered. The mother stated, “My son was sacrificed on Bakrid. Now I want the body of the accused, Asad, in front of me.”
Hindu organisations like Bajrang Dal and VHP supported the demands, threatening protests and calling for bulldozer action on the accused’s properties. However, later in the day, the family was convinced by the authorities to drop the demand, and Surya’s last rites were performed under heavy security and police presence. Thousands of people joined the last journey of Surya Chauhan, chanting slogans demanding justice.
The family’s demand was ultimately fulfilled as Asad was killed in police encounter today. Police recovered the motorcycle used by Asad and a country-made pistol from the spot. According to officials, the pistol was used by Asad to fire at the police team. The second person accompanying Asad on the motorcycle managed to escape during the encounter. A search operation has been launched to trace and arrest him.
