Uttar Pradesh: Asad, prime accused of murdering 17-year-old Surya Chauhan on Bakrid, killed in police encounter; read details

On the night of 30th May, the prime accused in the murder of 17-year-old student Surya Chauhan in Ghaziabad was killed after an encounter with the police. The accused, identified as Asad, had attacked Surya with a knife on Bakrid after calling him to a spot in Khora.

According to the police, Asad was planning to flee Ghaziabad and was expected to visit Khora to collect money from a friend before leaving the city. Police received specific information about the visit and acted swiftly. Ghaziabad Police laid a trap and deployed a team to intercept him.

When Asad arrived at the spot on a motorcycle with another person, the police tried to stop him. He reportedly opened fire at the police personnel and sustained bullet injuries in retaliatory firing. He was shifted to the hospital by the police, where he succumbed during treatment. A police constable was also injured during the exchange of fire. Officials said his condition was stable.

Police recover pistol and motorcycle, one accused still absconding

Police recovered the motorcycle used by Asad and a country-made pistol from the spot. According to officials, the pistol was used by Asad to fire at the police team. The second person accompanying Asad on the motorcycle managed to escape during the encounter. A search operation has been launched to trace and arrest him.

Asad was the main accused in the murder case and police had announced a reward of Rs 50,000 on him on Saturday.

Surya was attacked on Bakrid, CCTV had surfaced

Surya Chauhan was a Class 11 student. He was attacked in Khora on Bakrid. According to a friend of the victim, Asad had called Surya to the spot and then surrounded him with his associates. Before the attack, Asad reportedly asked Surya whether he had ever seen a goat being slaughtered, halal, and said that he would show him.

The accused then reportedly attacked Surya with a knife multiple times. A CCTV video of the incident had surfaced showing a group of youths attacking Surya. He was rushed to a hospital following the attack, where he succumbed to his injuries on Friday afternoon.

Family had refused to perform last rites, demanded strict action

On Saturday, Hindu organisations staged protests and Surya’s family refused perform last rites until killer Asad is encountered. The protest continued for around 10 hours before the police managed to convince the family. Surya was later cremated under heavy security.

The victim’s family had demanded encounter action against the accused and bulldozer action against their houses. Surya’s mother Saroj said that she wanted to see Asad’s photograph to believe that the encounter had taken place. She also demanded similar action against the other accused, saying that seven people had killed her son.

Three accused already arrested

Police had earlier arrested three accused in the case. Asad was the fourth accused and the main accused in the murder. After his death in the encounter, police are now searching for the fifth accused, who remains absconding.
