A recent development has surfaced regarding the violent demonstration that occurred at Jalandhar’s Lovely Professional University, popularly known as LPU, over accusations of rape of a student. A first-year student named Prabhjot Kaur has clarified that the rumours circulating about her are completely unfounded and confirmed that she is safe and with her family. She released a video urging everyone not to indulge in rumour-mongering.
She stated, “My name is Prabhjot Kaur, registration number 12604556. The rumours circulating about me are entirely wrong. I am completely safe. Nothing has happened to me. I am currently with my family at a secure location. I respectfully request that you refrain from spreading any rumours about me, as nothing has happened to me. As a fresher and a first-year student, I panicked due to the protests and left with my relatives to be with my family at my home,” reiterating that she was safe and with her family.

The statement emerged following a remark posted on Instagram indicating that the episode occurred in Kaur’s room number 144. It read that her ID card, bags and books remained scattered throughout the vacant room. Additionally, it was asserted that room number 147 was similarly empty, as the occupants of the two rooms had departed hastily.
The comment was posted beneath a 27th September (Sunday) video featuring LPU’s Registrar, Dr Monica Gulati, who charged that antisocial elements and vested interests were responsible for the unrest. “Misleading and baseless rumours were disseminated to damage the institution’s reputation,” she added. She also included a clip of three girls to substantiate her argument.
Three girls who reported to be staying inside room number 504 mentioned that nothing had happened there. They can be heard conveying, “We have been living here for two months. We do not want students and police to enter our room. We are not involved in this matter whatsoever. We are genuinely concerned at the moment, and if we face further complications, we will involve our parents. Please stop your interference. The police should also refrain from repeatedly coming to our room. Otherwise, we will contact our parents.”
Afterwards, the three students protested the university’s use of their video, insisting that they were told to make the statement and posted another piece of footage on Monday, complaining, “Our video has been trimmed and posted on Instagram. We had no idea about this, and no consent was obtained from us. Now, unnecessarily, we are being abused and subjected to vulgar comments. We have no involvement in this. A random room was picked and named. We have absolutely no role in this. Please leave us alone.”

The agitation at LPU followed allegations that a female student living on campus had been raped, after which stones were pelted, clashes broke out with cops, the Jalandhar-Phagwara highway was blocked, and classes were suspended as the turmoil continued to escalate. Police also opened a case and assembled a special investigation team (SIT) to look into the assertions.
