Nagina MP Chandrashekhar Azad gets non-bailable warrant in 2018 Sahibabad assault case, property attachment ordered

Azad Samaj Party president and Nagina Lok Sabha MP Chandrashekhar Azad has been issued a non-bailable warrant (NBW) by a Ghaziabad MP-MLA court in connection with an eight-year-old assault case registered at Sahibabad police station. The court has also ordered proceedings for the attachment of his property after he failed to appear before it during the ongoing proceedings.

The case dates back to an alleged altercation at a wedding ceremony in Sahibabad in 2018. The matter is currently being heard by the special MP-MLA court in Ghaziabad.

What happened at the 2018 wedding?

According to the complaint filed by Dharmendra Kumar, he had attended a wedding ceremony at Vrindavan Garden in Sahibabad in 2018, where Chandrashekhar Azad was allegedly present along with his supporters.

Kumar reportedly questioned why some of Azad’s supporters had arrived at the wedding carrying weapons. He alleged that the confrontation escalated soon afterwards, with Azad and around 15 others allegedly abusing and assaulting him.

The complainant further alleged that he was threatened with death during the incident.

The case was registered under Sections 323 and 305 of the Indian Penal Code, according to the case details cited in reports. The allegations against Azad and the other accused remain subject to judicial proceedings and have not been established by a final court verdict.

Court absence leads to fresh coercive action

The latest development came after Azad failed to appear before the court. During the hearing, complainant Dharmendra Kumar’s lawyer, Bhajanlal Gautam, reportedly told the court that an arrest warrant had previously been issued against the MP, but that he had continued to remain absent from the proceedings.

The complainant’s side subsequently sought the issuance of a non-bailable warrant and action against Azad’s property.

The lawyer also invoked Sections 82 and 83 of the Code of Criminal Procedure. Section 82 deals with the proclamation of a person who is absconding, while Section 83 provides for the attachment of property in specified circumstances.

After hearing the matter, the Ghaziabad MP-MLA court issued the NBW against Azad and ordered proceedings concerning the attachment of his property.

Azad had appeared in court in 2025

The latest order comes despite Azad having appeared before the same court in May 2025 in connection with the case. At the time, he had sought the recall of a warrant issued against him.

The court subsequently took up his application and fixed the matter for a further hearing.

The latest NBW marks another significant development in the long-pending case, which originated in an alleged altercation at a wedding ceremony nearly eight years ago. The court’s proceedings will determine the legal outcome of the allegations.
