The Uttar Pradesh government has approved 10% reservation for the economically backward people among the upper castes in relation to jobs and educational institutions. The government spokesperson Shrikant Sharma told that the decision to implement the Constitution (124th Amendment) Bill, 2019 was taken at a meeting of the State Cabinet presided by the Chief Minister.
“The cabinet meeting presided over by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath approved the notification granting 10 per cent reservation to the poor among the upper castes which have come into effect on January 14,” said Shrikant Sharma.
The act, which was passed by the Parliament in the winter session provides for 10% reservation for the economically weaker sections in the General category in jobs and educational institutions. “The UP government will implement the quota fully without touching the reservation for other sections of society”, Sharma said.
Gujarat and Jharkhand have already approved the act with now Uttar Pradesh joining the league as the third State to have approved the act. The proposal for the implementation of the 10% reservation for economically weaker sections of the upper caste in higher education institutions has been approved by Deputy CM Dinesh Sharma who holds the Higher Education portfolio.
