Uttar Pradesh’s Director General of Police (DGP), Om Prakash Singh was quoted by the Times of India revealing that about 5500 criminals in the state had got their bails cancelled, fearing action by the police. The DGP made this statement while chairing a crime review meeting in Agra along with other officials on Sunday.
He was quoted as saying that from March 2017 to January 2018, a whopping 1331 encounters were conducted by the UP police, as a result of which 3091 criminals were arrested and 43 were killed. Half of the criminals already had rewards declared against their name. As a result, fearing action by the police, a total of 5409 criminals have got their bails cancelled.
The DGP also claimed that clashes during Holi which include communal incidents, sharply fell down to 14 this year as compared to about 60 which were reported annually since 2013. He attributed it to proper planning and proactive policing.
Another report by News18, which carried the figure of 5409 cancelled bail applications, talked about a successful encounter carried out by the UP police on Sunday. In the encounter the police managed to gun down a goon named Kalua A.K.A. Amit who carried a reward of Rs 50,000 over his head.
Ever since the Yogi Adityanath led BJP government came to power in UP, it has been clamping down on crime with an iron fist.
It was reported how despite the National Human Rights Commission’s (NHRC) disapproval, Yogi government continued to be relentless in its encounters against notorious criminals. The NHRC’s disapproval of the UP government’s methods had resulted in the latter getting about 9 notices till January. One such notice was issued to the chief secretary of UP after dreaded gangster Sumit Gurjar, who had a bounty of Rs. 50000 on his head, was killed in an encounter.
The situation has become so bad for the state’s criminals that some of them were seen moving around Kairana, with placards around their necks stating that “I will never get involved in any crime and earn money by fair and honest means. Please forgive us.”
