SC stays Allahabad HC order to put UP govt secretaries under custody for failing to provide domestic helps for retired judges

On Thursday, April 20, the Supreme Court put a stay on the Allahabad High Court order to take the state’s Secretary (Finance) Shahid Manzoor Abbas Rizvi and Special Secretary (Finance) Saryu Prasad Mishra into custody.

A Supreme Court bench comprising Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justice PS Narsimha also ordered the immediate release of the two officials who were taken into custody over non-compliance with the High Court order to provide domestic helps and other facilities for the retired judges.

The UP Government’s urgent notice was made before the Supreme Court bench by Additional Solicitor General KM Nataraj, who described the High Court’s ruling as “unprecedented”. The Supreme Court bench thereafter issued the order. The bailable warrant issued by the High Court in the contempt matter for the Chief Secretary and Additional Chief Secretary (Finance) of the UP Government was also stayed by the Supreme Court bench.

CJI Chandrachud while pronouncing the order said, “Taken on board. The orders of the Division Bench of the High Court of Allahabad dated 04 April 2023 and 19 April 2023 shall remain stayed until the next date of listing. The bench further directed that the Supreme Court registrar-general notify the high court registrar-general of the order. The next hearing on the matter is scheduled to be held on Friday.

Allahabad High Court order

On April 4, 2023, the state government was ordered by the high court to implement/notify Rules/Guidelines established by the Chief Justice for providing benefits, including domestic help, to retired judges. However, the court stated on Wednesday that the officers did not comply with the April 4 directive.

The officers were taken into custody by the Allahabad High Court after the Association of Retired Supreme and High Court Judges filed a contempt plea. On Wednesday, a division bench of the High Court composed of Justices Suneet Kumar and Rajendra Kumar took the officers, who were present in court, into custody and ordered them to be brought on Thursday for the filing of charges after observing that they were in contempt of the orders.

The high court ruled that the officer had omitted crucial facts and misled the court; as a result, it held them prima facie liable for contempt of court and issued an arrest warrant. But the concerned officials approached the Supreme Court.

Read about how now-dead gangster, Atiq Ahmed, had wet his pants on seeing police: What former Director of ED, Karnal Singh said about the 2008 incident

Recounting an encounter of Delhi Police’s Special Cell — a unit mostly tasked with fighting terrorism and going after dreaded criminals — with the slain gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed in 2008, former director of Enforcement Directorate (ED), Karnal Singh, on Thursday said the feared gang lord once “wet his pants” on seeing the police.

“The incident dates back to January 2008 when I was in the Special Cell of Delhi Police. The Special Cell had created a database of dreaded criminals from north India and the list figured Atiq as well. He had a cash reward of Rs 1 lakh on his head at the time and was declared absconding,” the former ED director told ANI in an exclusive interview. He revealed further that a crack team of the Delhi Police Special Cell was assigned to go after Atiq at the time.

“And when the Special Cell investigates a case, they track every detail minutely, ranging from cases registered against an impugned person to his associates,” Singh said.

“The team recovered the phone number of Atiq’s sharpshooter after which they put him on technical surveillance (through the phone number). They listened in on a phone call in which Atiq said he was on his way to a house in Delhi’s Pitampura,” Singh told ANI, adding that the Special Cell team reached the location and surrounded the house.

“As he stepped out of the house and proceeded to climb into his car, an officer confronted him. He pointed a gun at him, asking him to get out of the car. On being informed that the team surrounding him was from the Special Cell, he was visibly scared and wet his pants,” Singh recalled.

He said Atiq was then brought to the Special Cell office before being handed over to the Uttar Pradesh Police.

In a shocking turn of events on April 15, three shooters — Arun Maurya, Sunny Singh and Lovelesh Tiwari — posing as media persons, gunned down Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf, while they were being taken for medical in Prayagraj.

The gangster siblings were surrounded by a sizeable contingent of police escorts at the time of the incident.

Atiq was accused in the 2005 murder of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MLA Raju Pal and, subsequently, in the killing of advocate Umesh Pal, a key witness to the earlier incident, in February this year.

Buzzfeed News shuts down operations, blames lack of profitability: Details

On Thursday (April 20), American ‘liberal’ media company Buzzfeed announced that it is shutting down its News Division as part of its workforce reduction strategy.

In an email, CEO Jonah Peretti informed that 15% of staffers are being laid off across different teams. “While layoffs are occurring across nearly every division, we’ve determined that the company can no longer continue to fund BuzzFeed News as a standalone organization,” he emphasised.

Peretti also stated that Buzzfeed had ‘overinvested’ in its News Division, despite being faced with a lot of obstacles including the Coronavirus pandemic, tech recession, declining digital advertising market, falling stock market and a tough economy.

“Dealing with all of these obstacles at once is part of why we’ve needed to make the difficult decisions to eliminate more jobs and reduce spending,” he added.

Jonah Peretti also informed, “Additionally, I made the decision to overinvest in BuzzFeed News because I love their work and mission so much. This made me slow to accept that the big platforms wouldn’t provide the distribution or financial support required to support premium, free journalism purpose-built for social media.”

The CEO of the liberal media company expressed remorse for not holding the company to ‘higher standards of profitability’ and thus failing to provide a buffer during downturns. The company will, however, continue to run HuffPost, which it acquired in 2020.

“I’ve learned from these mistakes, and the team moving forward has learned from them as well,” Mr. Peretti wrote. “We know that the changes and improvements we are making today are necessary steps to building a better future,” Peretti said.

Meanwhile, the affected employees of Buzzfeed News will be given the opportunity to apply for ‘select roles’ at Buzzfeed.com and HuffPost. It must be mentioned that BuzzFeed News was founded in 2011 and won the Pulitzer Prize in 2021.

After Court acquits all accused in Naroda Patiya case, the debunked “foetus” claim once again peddled online: Here is the truth about it

After 21 years, a special court in Ahmedabad gave the verdict in the Naroda Patiya case on Thursday, April 20, 2023. Former Gujarat minister Maya Kodnani, Bajrang Dal leaders Babu Bajrangi and Jaideep Patel, and all others have been acquitted by the court in the case.

Following the verdict, the old debunked story about a woman’s foetus being ripped out of her stomach during the Gujarat riots once again started doing the rounds. The story which has been circulating for over 2 decades now, says that a pregnant Muslim woman was raped by a Hindu mob, her pregnant belly was slit open and her foetus was flung into the fire.

Some versions also included that the above act was done with a sword. The woman in question, who died during the riots, and whose foetus was allegedly ripped out, was one Kausar Bano.

Many Twitter users once again rehashed a version of the same story as they disagreed with the acquittals in the case.

However, the postmortem of Kausar Bano told a different story.

A 2010 report states that the doctor who conducted the post-mortem on Kausar, found the foetus intact. Dr J S Kanoria, who had conducted the autopsy on 2nd March 2002 presented supporting documents to the special court and said that the foetus was intact in the woman’s womb. The foetus weight 2,500 gms and was 45 cms long.

Further, during the postmortem and cross-examination of witnesses, it had come to light that Kausar Bano died of suffocation, fear, and shock and her body bore no external or internal injuries. As per reports, during his deposition, Kanoria stated that Bano’s body bore no internal or external injury; moreover, there was no sword injury on her body. Dr Kanoria was working at the government civil hospital during the riots and had given a statement that Kausar Bano’s foetus was removed after the post-mortem. The post-mortem was conducted on 1st March 2002.

While Kausar’s death was unfortunate, the lies surrounding it only fanned the bitterness in an already embittered environment, and the lies around it continue to do so even today.

Instagram uses unrelated fact-check from Boom Live to claim Azad Maidan riots where a Muslim youth kicked Amar Jawan Jyoti is fake news

Instagram, like other Meta-owned platforms, has once again demonstrated a clear bias towards left-liberals and Islamists. The social networking service on Thursday removed a post uploaded by a user named being_political and labelled it as fake information.

What is even more bizarre is that in the explanation for its arbitrary action taken against a 2012 photo shared by the user, the social media platform went on to cite an unrelated fact-check done by Boom Live in the year 2019.

It all started when a social media user Being Political took to Instagram to post an image of the 2012 Azad Maidan riots where a Muslim youth had desecrated the Amar Jawan Jyoti memorial. The user captioned the post: “On 11 August 2012 Raza Academy had staged a morcha at Azad Maidan ground to protest against the alleged atrocities on Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar.”

Instagram immediately removed the post with an overlay that read ‘False Information.’ Additionally, to buttress its claim, the social networking giant went on to share a fact check posted by Boom Live, which was completely bizarre as the fact check was done in the year 2019, while the picture against which the action was taken was of 2012.

As shared below, Being Political shared a screenshot, which showed the response of Instagram where it shared a fact-check from Boom Live as its third-party independent fact-checker.

Notably, Instagram claims that if a third-party fact-checker identifies the content as ‘fake’, one of the options the platform adopts is labelling the photo as ‘false information’ in an overlay which then does not allow you to view the photo or the video.

Here, presumably out of deliberation to always come out in quick defence of the leftists and Islamists, the platform hastened to label the content as ‘fake,’ and in its haste, employed an unrelated fact check by Boom Live as their third-party fact-checker.

In 2019, in the wake of the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act protests in several parts of the country, the image of a Muslim youth caught in action while desecrating the Amar Jawan memorial at Mumbai’s Azad Maidan in 2012 resurfaced on social media. Social media users, then extensively shared the image with claims that the incident took place during the anti-CAA riots. Boom Live then fact-checked this particular claim. They also attested to the fact that the image was not from 2019 but from 2012.

Boom Live had, in fact, then claimed that they ran a reverse image search and found that the image was originally of Mumbai’s Azad Maidan where Raza Academy had staged a morcha at Azad Maidan ground to protest against the alleged atrocities on Muslims in Assam and Myanmar.

There is no doubt about the authenticity of the photograph, which was widely published in mainstream media in August 2012. Boom Live had only fact-checked the use of the authentic photograph for an unrelated event in 2019 by some social media users. They didn’t say that the photo is fake as Instagram is saying now, they only said the claims made in relation to the photo was fake.

Azad Maidan Riots

On 11 August 2012, the Muslim organisations led by Raza Academy staged a morcha at Azad Maidan ground to protest against the alleged atrocities on Muslims in Assam and Myanmar. The protest was staged by Muslim organisations in Azad Maidan to condemn the Rakhine riots and Assam riots, which later turned into a riot.

To condemn the Assam and Rakhine riots, Raza Academy organized a protest rally. However, the protest turned violent after one of the notorious groups attacked the policemen leading to police firing in which two persons were killed and 63 persons including 58 policemen were injured.

Raza Academy which had organized the protest had earlier assured the Mumbai Police that only 1500 people would turn up. However, more than 15000 people assembled at the Azad Maidan and later the crowd swelled to over 40000 people resulting in Muslim mobs unleashing violence on the streets of Mumbai.

The most shocking incident of the Azad Maidan Riots was the desecration of Amar Jawan Jyoti memorial by the Muslim mobs. The war memorial is dedicated to the fighters of 1857 – the First Indian Freedom Struggle.

Meta-platforms’ biases

However, it is not surprising that Meta-owned Instagram reacted so quickly and arbitrarily to a post showing violence by a Muslim youth, given that Meta platforms, like Facebook, are openly biased towards left-liberals and Islamists.

What more evidence is needed than the fact that Meta-owned Instagram did not consider Hindu Genocide to be a crime?

Like Instagram, Facebook had also blocked Hunter Biden’s laptop story, which was admitted by CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Facebook had also blocked the media reports about multi-million dollar real estate purchases by BLM co-founder Patrisse Khan-Cullors. The self-described Marxist was criticised on social media for purchasing four luxury houses valued at $3.4 million in the U.S., but Facebook censored those criticisms and also censored reports about the purchase in New York Post and the Daily Mail.

When TMC workers went on a rampage after winning the 2021 West Bengal elections, Facebook blocked users who had posted about the rape and torture of women by TMC goons for supporting the BJP.

OpIndia also has been a victim of Facebook’s censorship, as the social media giant had curtailed the reach of the page of our portal.

In this tragic hour, my thoughts are with the bereaved families.”

Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha said, “I am deeply anguished by the loss of lives of brave Army personnel in a tragic incident at Poonch. Their rich service to the nation will never be forgotten. My thoughts are with the bereaved families.”

Moments after launch, SpaceX’s starship rocket explodes above the Gulf of Mexico

0

Elon Musk’s SpaceX Starship rocket exploded and failed to reach orbit, moments after it was launched from South Texas on Thursday, New York Times reported.

Minutes after taking off from a launch pad in South Texas, the rocket appears to have exploded above the Gulf of Mexico. Although the spacecraft was unable to enter orbit, this failure was not fatal.

Elon Musk, the company’s founder, had tempered expectations prior to the launch stating that it might take several tries for Starship to be successful at this test flight, which was intended to reach speeds high enough to enter orbit before crashing down in the Pacific Ocean close to Hawaii.

Recently, the first launch of SpaceX’s Starship was called off at the last minute on Monday after a pressurisation issue arose in the first stage, reported CNN.

The scheduled launch of the most powerful rocket ever constructed has been scrubbed after engineers could not troubleshoot a pressurization issue with the massive Super Heavy booster in time.

Engineers tried to troubleshoot a pressurization issue with the massive Super Heavy booster. But they couldn’t quite figure it out in time, and today’s launch has been scrubbed, reported CNN.

The countdown clock had less than 10 minutes on it, with SpaceX engineer John Insprucker saying they would work to determine when they can make the next attempt.

SpaceX is letting the countdown clock run down a bit more and run through a bit of a rehearsal for what they will do on the next launch attempt. They do have a launch window reserved for Tuesday opening at 7 am CT (8 am ET), but recycling will force them to wait a bit longer at least 48 hours, reported CNN.

They will put the rocket through what’s called a “recycle” — taking out the super-chilled fuel and preparing for another attempt.

It was SpaceX’s first attempt to launch its Starship rocket after years of testing. CEO Elon Musk described Starship as the vehicle that underpins SpaceX’s founding purpose — sending humans to Mars for the first time. The inaugural flight test will complete nearly one full lap of the planet, ending with a splashdown off Hawaii.
