Kapil Sibal attacks OpIndia, defends IndiaSpend, hails AltNews: What it says about him and Congress’ incestuous relationship with media

Senior Congress leader Kapil Sibal has made a habit of defending Fake News in the highest court of the country. Yesterday, he defended fake news produced by IndiaSpend and today, he used AltNews to further his agenda against the government on the abrogation of Article 370. He did so while simultaneously spreading Fake News about OpIndia.

The Tale of Wormtail

Kapil Sibal’s defense of IndiaSpend and reliance on AltNews while opposing OpIndia is not surprising. In March 2018, OpIndia had raised several questions regarding his dubious financial dealings with a tainted businessman. Following OpIndia’s report, Kapil Sibal, after several twists and turns and many a u-turns, had threatened to sue OpIndia and sent a set of questions which he claimed if weren’t answered, he would take OpIndia to the courts. The questions were answered but he never reverted. Later, the IT Department had launched investigations into the business dealings of Sibal and his wife.

Kapil Sibal’s conduct is not surprising considering the party he represents. He has himself made false statements in the Court in the past. For instance, during a hearing in the INC Media Case, he had claimed that certain parts of the Delhi High Court’s judgment were ‘cut and paste’ of a note handed over by Solicitor General (SG) Tushar Mehta after the pleadings were over in the case. He was slammed for making such unfounded allegations by SG Mehta.

Kapil Sibal also attempted to delay the Supreme Court verdict on the Ram Mandir following which he was disowned by the Sunni Waqf Board he was representing in the matter. Kapil Sibal was also conspicuously present while an ‘expert’ rambled about how EVMs could be hacked at a press conference in London without any basis. Prior to the Lok Sabha elections, Kapil Sibal had also issued a thinly veiled threat to bureaucrats and said that the Congress party is keeping an eye on those officials working for the Prime Minister.

The Congress leader had even got involved in a feud with Barkha Dutt. As a renowned fake news peddler of considerable repute herself, Dutt had threatened to sue Kapil Sibal and his wife for cheating and fraud for allegedly refusing to uphold her contract during the Tiranga TV fiasco. A journalist at Tiranga TV had also alleged that Kapil Sibal had sent bouncers to intimidate the protesting employees.

Thus, given his track record, it’s not surprising that fake news peddlers such as AltNews and IndiaSpend are his bedfellows.

IndiaSpend’s intimate relationship with Congress

There are good reasons for Kapil Sibal’s resolute defense of IndiaSpend. More than any other digital media platform, IndiaSpend aligns with the ideological inclinations of the Congress party the most. In addition to that, Praveen Chakravarty, the head of Congress party’s data analytics department, is a founding trustee at IndiaSpend. The website of IndiaSpend, however, does not mention him as one.

IndiaSpend works to provide a rational justification for Congress’ anti-Hindu policies. Let’s not forget that the Congress party was the one that came up with the Saffron Terror narrative. Consistent with that, IndiaSpend came forward with a database the sole objective of which was to paint Hindus as aggressors during any instance of communal violence and Muslims as victims all the time. Even cases which were not communal in nature were given a communal spin by the database. We, at OpIndia, have extensively documented the erroneous ventures of IndiaSpend.

IndiaSpend has, in the past, misrepresented the facts of a case to boost the number of Muslim victims in its database. It has also refrained from correcting its database even after its own ground report contradicted its preconceived notions. It didn’t stop there and even went on to proclaim Muslims as victims in the Hauz Qazi Temple Desecration case even though it was the Hindus whose Temple was desecrated. Even by its own admission, IndiaSpend was reaching conclusions based on incomplete data. In simple terms, it means that IndiaSpend was selectively using data to further pre-decided agenda. Ultimately, it was forced to shut down its ‘hate-tracker database‘ after its propaganda became indefensible.

Thus, the question arises, why was IndiaSpend running its anti-Hindu campaign? It is known that the Congress party always wanted to implement a Communal Violence Bill that quite blatantly discriminated against Hindus. It wouldn’t be far-fetched to assert that the digital media platform was working towards building a narrative that would provide for such a law using ‘lynchings’ as an excuse. It becomes quite evident from the fact that the Congress party did promise such a law in its manifesto for the 2019 Lok Sabha Elections.

Furthermore, IndiaSpend furthered the Congress party’s talking points on Kashmir. Thus, it’s natural that Kapil Sibal is working overtime to defend the credibility of IndiaSpend. Because the narrative that it is peddling is crucial for the Congress and consistent with the brand of politics that the party espouses. Given the origins of the platform, it can be safely speculated that it is one of the many propaganda wings of the Congress party.

Congress’s relationship with other Digital Media platforms

The Congress manifesto for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections and its general conduct even post elections reveals that the people who are chartering the path ahead for the party are unduly influenced by the United States of America. Its manifesto indicated quite clearly that it was formulated by individuals who have spent too much time in USA. Thus, it’s by looking at USA that we can understand the relationship that the Congress party shares with digital media platforms such as AltNews and IndiaSpend and others.

In USA, there’s a clear partisan divide in the media platforms. Its ideological inclinations are quite clear. For instance, CNN and MSNBC and most others serve as the media wing of the Democrat party. They might claim to be neutral but their coverage and the disclosures made by Wikileaks reveals abundantly the extent of collusion between Democrats and the mainstream media.

In India as well, there was immense collusion between the mainstream media and the Congress party. However, with the advent of Narendra Modi at the Center, the Congress lost the grip it once had on the media. It took some time but eventually grasped the power of digital media and realized its potential. Thus, digital media replaced the mainstream media as the stronghold of the Congress party although there were prominent factions even within the mainstream media that served the Congress party’s interests.

AltNews, for instance, has peddled fake news on numerous occasions. It has lied about pre-poll violence in Kolkata when the Vidyasagar Statue was vandalized, it has misled people on Narendra Modi’s poll promises. On one occasion, they even accused the Police of lying. Zubair, co-founder of AltNews, has even spread fake news to incite communal violence. Its other founder Pratik Sinha has doxxed people online who could be seen as sympathetic to the BJP.

One of their co-founders happily furthers genocidal accounts wishing for death upon anyone who doesn’t subscribe to the leftist cult. The co-founder of Altnews spread lies about ease of doing business rankings. He shared a fake image of BJP leader BS Yeddyurappa right before the Karnataka elections. Altnews has debunked eyewitness accounts in the past without any conclusive proof because it suited their narrative. It has also spread lies about OpIndia.com itself and also about BJP’s stand, in retail FDI.

The important thing to note here is the fact that all the lies of AltNews invariably benefits only one political party and harms the other. If the lies were not motivated, then there would have been at least some instances when the BJP benefited from its lies too. But that has never happened. Even the doxxing and everything else always benefits only one party.

Therefore, it isn’t surprising at all that Kapil Sibal uses AltNews and IndiaSpend to further Congress party’s agenda at the Court or that he defends IndiaSpend despite its track record of spreading Fake News.

Why attack OpIndia?

Kapil Sibal accuses OpIndia of partisanship and of spreading Fake News without any basis for his allegations. As a wise man once said, “If you want to know what the Left is actually doing, pay close attention to what it is accusing you of. Because whatever you’re being accused of, it’s exactly what the Left is doing.”

OpIndia has constantly busted the fake news and false narratives that the digital platforms aligned with the Congress party, and even Kapil Sibal have peddled over time. Thus, we can take some pride in saying that we have constantly been thorns on the sides of the Congress party and its minions. Therefore, the accusations of partisanship do not come as any surprise. Because it’s exactly what the Left is doing. And Congress of 2019 is the party of JNU.

OpIndia has worked hard to undermine the unchallenged dominance that the Congress party wished to enjoy over digital media platforms. Therefore, it isn’t surprising that Kapil Sibal is busy maligning OpIndia in the Supreme Court. Recently, the Solicitor General of India Tushar Mehta even used a report by OpIndia to debunk the lies spread by IndiaSpend. Thus, when one combines all of this with OpIndia’s history with Kapil Sibal, it’s not really surprising that Sibal is maligning OpIndia at the Court while using AltNews and defending IndiaSpend.

No respite for Congress leader P Chidambaram: Special Court extends judicial custody till December 11 in INX Media case

0

The Special CBI Court on Wednesday issued an order extending the judicial custody of the former Union Finance minister P Chidambaram accused of granting FIPB approvals to the INX Media company while serving as a minister in the cabinet in the UPA era.

The investigative agency Enforcement Directorate had earlier sought an extension of P Chidambaram’s judicial custody by 14 days till December 11 and the same was granted today. ED is currently probing charges of money laundering against the erstwhile Union minister. Judge Ajay Kumar Kuhar pronounced the order, granting an additional 14 days of judicial custody to the 74-year old senior Congress leader. The counsel representing P Chidambaram, Kapil Sibal and Abhishek Manu Singhvi did not oppose ED’s plea for an extension of Chidambaram’s judicial custody.

P Chidambaram is accused in the INX Media scam which involves charges of bribery and lobbying in granting foreign investments worth over Rs 300 crores to INX Media. INX Media was later known as NewsX, it was owned by Peter and Indrani Mukherjee of the sensational Sheena Bora murder case. Chidambaram is accused of misusing his power as the finance minister to grant INX Media an FIPB clearance.

It is noteworthy to mention that P Chidambaram is held under judicial custody in Tihar Jail for over 6 weeks now. The Delhi CBI court has now extended his judicial custody by another 2 weeks(14 days).

Chidambaram was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on October 16 and sent to judicial custody by October 30. On November 13 his judicial custody was extended till November 27. The Delhi court rejected his bail plea on November 15 on the grounds that Chidambaram played a “key and active role” in the commission of the offence money laundering, prompting him to file a bail plea appeal in the Supreme Court. The apex court is set to hear Chidambaram’s bail plea tomorrow where the Enforcement Directorate will make its submissions against it.

Trouble for Shiv Sena? NCP demands Maharashtra Chief Minister’s post for 2.5 years, Deputy CM for Ajit Pawar: Report

The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) is demanding the Chief Minister’s seat for two and a half years from Shiv Sena as part of the Maha Vikas Aghadi government in Maharashtra, Times Now has reported. It’s also demanding the Deputy Chief Minister’s post for Ajit Pawar who had quit only yesterday as the Deputy CM with Devendra Fadnavis as Chief Minister.

Now that the Shiv Sena has irreparably broken its ties with the Bharatiya Janata Party, it’s only natural that the NCP is trying to extract maximum leverage from the Shiv Sena. Furthermore, NCP has only two MLAs less than the Shiv Sena in the Assembly. Therefore, it’s not bewildering that the NCP wants a share in the Chief Minister’s seat as well.

We had reported earlier that the Congress party had agreed to give up on the Speaker’s Chair and content itself with 13 ministerial berths. Therefore, it appears likely that the Speaker of the Assembly will be from the NCP as well. All this while, Sanjay Raut is dreaming of a situation where Shiv Sena’s ‘Suryayaan’ lands in Delhi. Meanwhile, it’s not even a guarantee that they will have a Chief Minister for the full five-year term in Maharashtra.

Uddhav Thackeray is expected to take oath as Chief Minister of the 1st of December. Ajit Pawar is a very likely candidate for the post of Deputy Chief Minister.

Amit Shah stands by Sabarimala devotees, says SC should not interfere in religious customs: Read details

Speaking at the Republic Summit, the Union Home Minister Amit Shah reiterated that the Supreme Court should not interfere in the matter of religious beliefs. Home Minister Shah also clarified that there is difference between the Ayodhya matter and the Sabarimala issue as the former one was a civil issue while Sabarimala issue concerns with the tradition.

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n8ajVFyvAIM?start=1735]
Home Minister Amit Shah said that he still maintains that the Supreme Court should not interfere in the matter of religious beliefs. He added that that the Ayodhya dispute was on who owned the land and not that how the deity will be worshipped as in the case of Sabarimala.

“Sabarimala issue is related to cultural practices and traditions whereas the Ayodhya case was a purely civil dispute. The two issues should not be conflated. The courts should refrain from regulating the religious beliefs of the people. If the court is predisposed in giving a judgment in the Sabarimala matter, I hope their decisions on women entry in mosques and Parsi temples remain consistent with the Sabarimala verdict,” Amit Shah said.

Further sticking to his stance, Amit Shah stated while the Sabarimala case was being contested, the other petitions were not contested. He maintained that the Court should not interfere in any religion’s customs.

“Ayodhya’s case was about who will own the land and not on customs. The Ayodhya case is a purely civil issue. In Sabarimala, however, the matter is regarding the traditions of the temple and whether it should be changed or not. While there has been a lot of controversy over Sabarimala, there is also a petition seeking entry for women to offer namaz inside the mosque and also allow Parsi women inside the Aghyari. In all these matters my stance is the same. Let the verdict at least come from the Court,” he added.

‘Who cares about Brahmins!’ Marathi journalist Nikhil Wagle bares his casteist fangs as NCP-Congress gain power in Maharashtra

Compulsive hatemonger and alleged journalist Nikhil Wagle has resorted once again to fomenting caste tensions in Maharashtra. Nikhil Wagle claims that Brahmins are unhappy with Devendra Fadnavis’s exit from the Chief Minister’s office and claimed that ‘Bahujans’ and people in rural areas are very happy with his removal from power.

Nikhil Wagle, who is obviously overjoyed by the fact that the opportunistic alliance between Shiv Sena, NCP and the Congress securing power in Maharashtra, didn’t stop there and went on to proclaim, “Who cares for 3% Brahmins!”

Amusingly enough, Nikhil Wagle is the same person who waxes eloquence about the necessity of ‘politics of development’ and claims that ‘politics of caste’ cannot take us forward. However, underneath such lofty proclamations lies a casteist bigot who seeks to incite caste tensions in the country.

Source: @TheAngryLord/Twitter

Nikhil Wagle is a known Modi-hater and has an extremely chequered past. In the past, he has called the dreaded terrorist and mastermind of the 26/11 terror attack Hafiz Saeed as ‘Hamara Apna‘. He has also spread Fake News in abundant measure and blamed others when caught. Wagle has also used the tragic death of children to further his agenda against the BJP.

Read: Watch: Propagandist Nikhil Wagle calls Hafiz Saeed ‘Hamara Apna’ in a rant video against PM Modi

Unfortunately, as disgusting a person as Wagle is, anti-Brahmin hatred is extremely mainstream in the ‘intellectual’ circles of the country. For instance, Tamil Nadu is home to vicious anti-Brahmin propaganda that reminds one of the Nazi propaganda against Jews. An activist associated with Amnesty International has peddled anti-Brahmin hatred in the past and called for violence against Brahmins.

When Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey came to India, he met numerous leftist activists and raised a placard that said ‘Smash Brahminical Patriarchy‘. Even something so inane as a brand of Sambar Powder did not escape the wrath that Leftists harbour against Brahmins. Even Bollywood has a significant strain of anti-Brahmin hatred ingrained that leads to movies such as Article 15 which further thinly-veiled anti-Brahmin propaganda.

It is widely known that even in Maharashtra politics, anti-Brahmin hatred runs rife. Devendra Fadnavis, who is a Brahmin himself, had to suffer numerous personal attacks due to his caste. Despite the fact that he was immensely popular due to his work as Chief Minister, the Opposition made his caste the primary line of attack against him.

‘Plan of action’ to reclaim PoK should be carried out discreetly just like abrogation of Article 370: Amit Shah at Republic Summit

Speaking on the second day of the Republic Summit, Union Home Minister Amit Shah responded to anchor Arnab Goswami’s question about the government’s ‘plan of action’ to recover Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK). Amit Shah said that such ‘plan of action’ to reclaim PoK should be carried out furtively at a suitable time like the abrogation of Article 370 and should not be a subject of discussion on National television.

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n8ajVFyvAIM?start=1110]

“Matters such as securing Pakistan occupied Kashmir from the grasp of the neighbouring country is an issue of national security and thus it should not be discussed on national television. Such discussions do not happen in public. However, I do believe that an appropriate ‘plan of action’ should be set in motion at the right time just like the abrogation of Article 370,” Shah said.

Talking about his aggressive demeanour, Shah clarified that the aggression exhibited by him is not directed towards any political party or politician in particular but towards the disorder and insecurity bedevilling the country. Shah explained in detail about the singular incident as to why he bristled at Ghulam Nabi Azad in the lower house of the parliament during the discussion of the abrogation of Article 370.

“He (Azad) raised a doubt on the country’s parliamentary competence to legislate a law on Kashmir. It was then that I stood up and asked if he considers Jammu and Kashmir as a part of India or not. If Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of India and lies within India’s jurisdiction, then the Indian parliament is competent enough to legislate a law on it. Jammu and Kashmir and Pakistan occupied Kashmir are integral parts of the country. Not just me but crores of Indians will be ready to give up their life for Kashmir.,” Shah declaimed.

In the aftermath of the abrogation of Article 370, many senior BJP leaders declared that India should now set her eyes upon Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK). Subramanian Swamy said that after scrapping of Article 370, the next thing on the government’s agenda should be reclaiming PoK back.

Union Minister Giriraj Singh too echoed similar sentiments claiming that Pakistan occupied Kashmir and Aksai Chin will soon be integrated with India. Union Minister of Defence, Rajnath Singh warned Pakistan to mend their ways or risk losing PoK just like they lost East Pakistan in the war of 1971. Singh further asserted that any future talks with Pakistan will be on Pakistan occupied Kashmir and not on Jammu and Kashmir. PM Modi has himself made it amply clear that Pakistan has illegally occupied its administered Kashmir and he remains hopeful of recovering it back.

Maharashtra: Congress to get 9 cabinet and 4 MoS posts, Speaker likely from NCP

A day ahead of Shiv Sena Chief Uddhav Thackeray taking oath-taking as Maharashtra Chief Minister, the Congress party has reportedly agreed to give up the claim on the post of Speaker and instead will be accommodated with 13 ministerial berths in Maharashtra council of ministers.

According to the report, the Congress party which had earlier insisted on the post of Speaker in the newly elected legislative assembly has now backed off from the claim. However, the Congress party will now be given 13 ministerial posts that include nine cabinet ministerial berths and four MoS posts.

As per a News18 report, senior Congress leaders Vijay Namdevrao Wadettiwar, Yashomati Thakur, Nana Patole, Varsha Gaikwad, Amin Patel, Ashok Chavan, Amit Deshmukh, Bunty Patil, Vishwajit Kadam, KC Padvi will be nominated as cabinet ministers in the Maharashtra government along with four other junior ministers.

It is likely that the post of Speaker will be from the NCP, which is also expected to get a fair share of cabinet berths in the new government.

The Maharashtra government can not have more than 43 ministers in its council of ministers, which includes Chief Minister, cabinet ministers and minister of states. According to the 91st Constitutional Amendment Act 2003, the total number of ministers including in the council of ministers shall not exceed 15% of the total strength of the state legislative assembly.

The political drama in Maharashtra took a completely new turn on Tuesday when Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis resigned from the post after NCP leader Ajit Pawar withdrew his support following his resignation from the government. Following that the Shiv Sena, NCP and the Congress joined hands together to form the next government in Maharashtra.

Read: ‘Keeping BJP out’ isn’t a winning strategy, and the opposition parties seem to have learnt nothing from history

The BJP, which had won 105 seats in the 288-member Maharashtra assembly, was short of 40 MLAs to prove a majority. The BJP had relied on Ajit Pawar to bring in 54 NCP MLAs. However, the political gamble failed as Ajit Pawar shied away from supporting the BJP led government at the last moment.

On Tuesday evening, the newly-elected MLAs, including senior members of the three parties had nominated Shiv Sena chief as the Chief Minister of the state. Uddhav Thackeray will be leading an alliance of the Shiv Sena-Nationalist Congress Party-Congress, called Maha Vikas Aghadi, in Maharashtra. With this, Maharashtra will have a Shiv Sena Chief Minister after 20 years.

Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray will swear in as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra on 28th November 2019. In a letter last night, Maharashtra Governor Koshyari invited the new alliance ‘Maha Vikas Aghadi’ to form a government under the leadership of Uddhav Thackeray.

Reportedly, six ministers will also be taking their oath as ministers alongside Chief Minister-designate Uddhav Thackeray on Thursday at Shivaji park in Mumbai.

It is Hindus, not Muslims who disturb peace: Ayodhya Muslim parties’ lawyer Rajeev Dhavan makes outrageous remarks

The Supreme Court in a historic decision had established that the Hindus have a right on the entire 67-acre Ram Janmabhoomi and had granted an alternate 5-acre land to the Muslims to build their Masjid. Though this decision has been welcomed by almost everyone, Senior Advocate Rajeev Dhavan, who has been representing the Muslim parties, does not seem to be too pleased with the apex court’s verdict who has gone on record to make various provocative remarks.

Rajeev Dhavan showing complete disrespect for the apex body said in an address to Muslim Parties that “Injustice has been done to Muslims” and that “unless SC ‘reverses the injustice’, you won’t see justice” says Rajeev Dhavan.

Read: Ram Janmabhoomi case: Senior Advocate Rajeev Dhavan representing Muslim parties has a complete meltdown, tears up maps, papers

In what could be seen as a clear provocation, the senior advocate said that “Muslims have never disturbed the peace, only Hindus disturbed atmosphere”. He blamed RSS for stoking riots, saying that many probe reports have found RSS to be guilty.

Talking about Sunni Waqf Board’ decision to not file a review petition against the SC verdict on Ayodhya, the senior advocate said that they have taken this decision under immense pressure.

Read: Rajeev Dhavan’s effusive praise for Aurangzeb captures brilliantly the essential position in favour of Babri Masjid

He went on to castigate the chairman of the Sunni Waqf Board, Zafar Ahmad Farooqui by saying that since he has an FIR against him he is subject to the pressure of Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath, hinting that it is under Adityanath’s pressure that Farooqui decided that they will not file a review petition against the Supreme Court’s verdict on the Ayodhya dispute.

Yesterday, Uttar Pradesh Sunni Waqf Board had decided not to challenge the Supreme Court verdict on Ayodhya dispute. Meanwhile, the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) has today come up with the decision to file a review petition in the Ram Janmabhoomi, Ayodhya case.

These remarks from a senior lawyer have stoked severe outrage. Condemning the lawyer for his provocative statements, BJP has slammed Rajeev Dhavan and urges Bar Council to send him a notice. Calling it unethical and unprofessional, BJP’ Subramanian Swamy said that this can be taken note of under the Advocate’s Act and urged the Bar Council to take cognisance of the same.

This is not the first time people might have witnessed this kind of reprehensible conduct from the Muslim Party lawyer. During the last day of the hearing on Ram Janmabhoomi case, Rajeev Dhavan had an epic meltdown when he shredded papers and maps handed over to him by the Hindu Mahasabha.

From UCC, Sabarimala to Maharashtra: Here are the 6 things Amit Shah spoke about at the Republic Summit

Speaking at the Republic Summit, the Union Home Minister Amit Shah asserted that his party remains committed to the cause of Uniform Civil Code and assured that it will be implemented in the country at a suitable time.

Here are the main issues that the Home Minister talked about:

Uniform Civil Code

Hitting out at the Congress party, Shah said that BJP’s stance on the Uniform Civil Code has remained steadfast but the Congress party has never made its stand clear on the issue. He asserted that Congress should clarify their stand on it.

The Union Home Minister asserted that UCC is on the BJP’s manifesto and the party does deliver on its promises.

Ayodhya Verdict

Shah also stated that the Congress had been the biggest impediment in the path of Ram Mandir. He stated that the party’s vote bank policies have caused delays for a resolution of the issue.

“Back in 2014, Congress argued that the Ayodhya dispute should be resolved after the General elections. Even in 2019, Congress’ Kapil Sibal advocated that the verdict on the contentious issue should be given after the 2019 General elections as it had the potential of affecting election results. The Supreme Court has given its judgment and provided us with 90 days to complete the necessary procedures. We will not let that 90 become 91,” Shah said.

Difference between Ayodhya and Sabarimala

Following the Ayodhya judgment, Shah had exhorted the people to peacefully accept the apex court’s decision of granting the land to the Hindu parties. Shah, however, drew a sharp distinction between his stance on the Sabrimala verdict and Ayodhya judgment. “Sabarimala issue is related to cultural practices and traditions whereas the Ayodhya case was a purely civil dispute. The two issues should not be conflated. The courts should refrain from regulating the religious beliefs of the people. If the court is predisposed in giving a judgment in the Sabarimala matter, I hope their decisions on women entry in mosques and Parsi temples remain consistent with the Sabarimala verdict,” Shah said.

Read: SC refers the Sabarimala matter to a larger bench by 3:2 majority, pegged with issues like women entry into Mosques and FGM

Nationwide NRC

Regarding the nationwide implementation of National Register of Citizens(NRC), Shah responded in affirmative, questioning the detractors if they want to see their country turn into a ‘Dharamshala’. “NRC will be implemented across the country. This is my party’s stand on it,” Shah said.

PoK

When asked about the plan of action the government of India has initiated in reclaiming back Pakistan occupied Kashmir(PoK), Shah replied that such sensitive issues should not be discussed on national television, instead at the right time, the ‘plan of action’ will be set in motion in a discreet manner just like abrogation of Article 370 was carried out.

Maharashtra politics

Shah also spoke about the ongoing Maharashtra political crisis. He once again reasserted that no assurance of chief ministerial position was given to the Shiv Sena before the elections. Speaking on horse-trading allegations, Shah said, “Is it not horse-trading that the Shiv Sena has got the Chief Ministerial position? If it were about the welfare of Maharashtra, why didn’t the Congress party and NCP had their chief ministers?”

“In all our rallies, all senior BJP leaders have been saying that if the BJP-SS alliance wins, Devendra Fadnavis will be our CM, why was it not opposed then? We won on 70 per cent of the seats contested while Shiv Sena only bagged 42 per cent of the total seats they fought on. All Shiv Sena candidates, including Aditya Thackeray, used PM Modi’s cut-outs to garner votes in their constituencies. People of Maharashtra know it clearly that Shiv Sena acquired seats by using PM Modi’s name,” Shah declared.

‘Keeping BJP out’ isn’t a winning strategy, and the opposition parties seem to have learnt nothing from history

And yet again, “everyone” gets together to keep BJP out, this time in Maharashtra. For what it’s worth, here are the three highest scores by any political party in Maharashtra in the last 25 years (since 1995)

#1 BJP (2014) : 122 seats

# 2 BJP (2019): 105 seats

# 3 Congress (2009) : 82 seats.

Indeed, the BJP is the only party to have crossed 100 seats in Maharashtra since 1991. Nobody else has even come close. And yet the party finds itself in the opposition benches.

For BJP supporters across several generations, this is a familiar pang.

In 1996, Atalji had to resign after just 13 days as Prime Minister.  In 1999, Atalji lost his government by 1 vote.

The strategy of “keep BJP out” has played out in state after state and at the Center. For decades. It mattered little whether BJP was a major player or a minor player. Even when the BJP had just 3 seats in the West Bengal Assembly, the Congress, the CPIM and Trinamool were conniving with just one objective: keep BJP out.

This strategy might bring temporary reprieve to ‘secular forces’ and their liberal cheerleaders every now and then. But what does history really show?

Read: Maharashtra: Shiv Sena, NCP and Congress MLAs made to swear pledge of loyalty for Sonia Gandhi, Sharad Pawar and Uddhav Thackeray

How did things shape out in Indian politics since the day Atalji lost his government by one vote?

Has anybody actually been able to stop the BJP? There were supposed to be all sorts of barriers to BJP’s growth. Language barriers, caste barriers, North-South divide,  urban-rural divide, everything.

Every last one of these has been smashed. The BJP is now the largest party representing South India in the Lok Sabha. The BJP controls the entire North East. The BJP has touched 50% vote share in Uttar Pradesh. Hindi speaking states, non-Hindi speaking states, tribal states, rural states, urban states: BJP smashed all these barriers.

If ‘keeping BJP out’ is a strategy, it must be the worst one ever.

Read: All 17 ‘rebel’ MLAs who were disqualified will join BJP: Karnataka CM BS Yediyurappa

What does the opposition hope to achieve by keeping the single largest party in opposition benches? When has that ever worked out well for anyone?

They know exactly what is going to happen. The khichdi government will collapse in a heap. And the public will be extremely severe in punishing them. BJP is finally on course to winning its full majority in Maharashtra.

BJP used to have similar problems in Karnataka, remember? Strong player, but away from the majority. The party got its first big upgrade when Cong & JDS tied up after 2004 to keep single largest BJP out of power. This brought BJP to ~100 seats, just shy of a majority. They still had a problem because they were absent in the Old Mysore region, which accounts for 60 seats. Well, that problem was solved when Congress and JDS tied up in 2018.

In short, two betrayals of the popular mandate by Congress & JDS and BJP finally had no problems sweeping Karnataka.

How do you think Maharashtra is going to go? The BJP is a 100 seat player in the state but has last-mile problems in getting a majority. This betrayal should get them across the finishing line.

So why does the opposition stick to the ‘keep BJP out’ strategy? Haven’t they learned that it doesn’t work? What was the fate of the Mahagathbandhan in Uttar Pradesh recently? No lessons learned?

Because, the opposition quite simply has lost the drive, the will and energy to go to the people. Staying in power through contacts and management skills can be very useful, but it has its limits.

Read: BJP has shown ruthlessness in the game of power politics, and it is good for ideology too

Congress did master this skill during the UPA years. With a mere 145 seats, Sonia Gandhi managed to run the government for a full five-year term. It is indeed quite spectacular. In Maharashtra, Congress has been pushed to a pathetic fourth position but manages to get a toehold on power thanks to negotiation skills. This is really all that Congress politics has been since 2004: managing people, moving pawns on the chessboard, whether before the scenes or behind them.

But look what it did to them. The Congress got so involved in manipulating pawns on the Lutyens chessboard that it forgot elections happen among the people. It tried to win the 2019 elections not through campaigning but through subterfuge. Planting stories, conspiracy theories, calling in favours, activating old contacts in India and abroad and the like. Reaching out to every duck with a quack who had an axe to grind in caste politics, student politics, legal activism, stand up comedy, anything. Before they knew it, the tail was wagging the dog. And they went nowhere.

Congress probably hasn’t noticed that they got ten years in power, but couldn’t use the time to revive the party in a single state. Not in Uttar Pradesh, nor Bihar, nor Bengal. Not even to build themselves up in Maharashtra, where they had their Chief Minister. And they managed to reduce themselves to dust in Andhra Pradesh.

And so it goes on in Maharashtra. So-called ‘secular forces’ manage to stay in power. But how long? Is there a Plan B for when things fall apart, as they will shortly?

As for BJP, it is back to the drawing board in Maharashtra. 100 seats aren’t enough. The majority mark is 145, not 100. No discounts for BJP it seems and no lucky breaks. Which might be the best thing ever. Because the only way to get to that 145 figure is to assess every weakness, address every shortcoming and win the confidence of one and all. Full speed ahead.
