Gehlot and Pilot responsible for my death: Rajasthan farmer commits suicide as Congress govt failed to fulfill its loan waiver promise

After the broken promises of loan-waivers consumed lives in Congress-ruled Madhya Pradesh, the neighbouring state of Rajasthan has been facing similar farmer suicides on account of dubious promises of farm loan waiver made by the Congress-ruled government.

On Sunday, a 45-year-old farmer ended his life at Thakri village in Rajasthan’s Sri Ganganagar district on Sunday, leaving behind a farewell video and a two-page note accusing the Ashok Gehlot government of failing to deliver its pre-poll promise of waiving bank loans.

Sohan Lal, a farmer, recorded a video on Sunday morning and uploaded it on social media before consuming poison. He was soon taken to a nearby government hospital from where he was referred to Sriganganagar. However, he died while being taken to the other hospital.

In his suicide note, Sohan Lal in an emotional message, named Gehlot and Pilot, alleging that he was forced to take the drastic step as the Congress government in Rajasthan did not keep its promise of waiving off bank loans to farmers.

“I am going to end my life today. Nobody is at fault in this. (Ashok) Gehlot and (Deputy Chief Minister) Sachin Pilot are responsible for my death. They had made a statement that they will waive off our loans within 10 days… What has happened to their promise? It is time to bow down the government today.”

Sohan Lal Meghwal also reportedly requested his fellow-farmers to not conduct his last rites until they are freed of their debts.

According to local officials, Sohan Lal had taken loans Rs.3 lakh from Oriental Bank of Commerce and the Syndicate Bank for which he was regularly paying interest. However, he was left out of the Rajasthan government’s loan waiver scheme as covered only loans of up to Rs. 2 lakh issued by cooperative banks.

Rahul Gandhi led Congress which came to power in various states promising several sops of loan waivers, high MSP but failed to deliver on its promises. The false promise of loan-waiver by the Congress party has now taken lives in Congress-ruled states of Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka and Rajasthan.

After failing to waive-off farm loans in the Rajasthan, the Congress had come up with a way to blame the previous BJP regime for leaving the state in massive debt. Chief Minister Gehlot had said that the farm loan waiver involving cooperative banks would amount to Rs 18,000 crore at a time when the state was caught in debt of Rs 3 lakh crore left by the former BJP government.

In addition to this, a farm loan waiver scam appeared to be brewing in the state of Rajasthan after non-existent names appeared on the list surfaced in Rajasthan after the Congress government initiated the loan waiver scheme. Scores of names appeared in the list of beneficiaries for the farm loan waiver scheme who had no loans against their names raising suspicion on the intention of the farm loan waiver scheme by the Congress government.

JNU Students’ Union cries ‘Hindi imposition’ for introduction of Hindi in BA and B.Tech courses

On Monday, the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU), dominated by ultra-left wing groups came up with a new controversy by protesting against the introduction of Hindi by as a compulsory subject at the undergraduate BA and BTech courses.

According to the reports, the controversial student body JNUSU on Monday opposed a discussion on making Hindi compulsory for B.A. and B.Tech students, listed on the agenda for the 151st Academic Council meeting.

According to the JNUSU, the agenda item was in response to an earlier letter received in 2018 October from the Ministry of Human Resource Development, “in which it has been requested that along with making Hindi a compulsory subject in all the schools and universities of India, appropriate and necessary action should be taken to encourage the usage of Hindi in the government offices as well”.

“In a letter issued by MHRD in 2018 to all universities, Hindi is mentioned as the national language! Furthermore, it issues directives to implement Hindi as a compulsory course in all bachelor level programs. It must be reiterated that India does not have a national language. Rather the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution lists 22 official languages in accordance with the diverse and plural nature of our country,” the statement said.

Last year in February, the JNUSU had hit the streets after the university had made 75% attendance compulsory for students of all courses and had also asked teachers to mark attendance with the signature of students on a sheet that is to be submitted to the central office every day.

Read why Bharat Yadav was trending on Twitter as people mourned death of Tabrez Ansari

In an unfortunate incident, twenty-four-year-old Tabrez Ansari was allegedly lynched by a mob in Jharkhand on suspicion of theft on June 17. He was reportedly forced to say ‘Jai Shree Ram’ and ‘Jai Hanuman’ by the mob. Four days later, on June 22, he succumbed to his injuries.

A case against the villagers was registered under IPC sections 302 (murder) and 295A (deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religions or religious beliefs) among others. As netizens mourned the unfortunate death of Ansari, ‘Bharat Yadav’ was also trending on Twitter. Here is why:

On 18th May, following an argument of lass-shop owners with a burqa-clad woman, the women allegedly led an agitated Muslim mob in Mathura. The mob indulged in brutally thrashing the lassi shop owners while addressing them ‘Kaafir’, a pejorative reference to non-Muslims. Pankaj Yadav and Bharat Yadav, the two brothers who were managing the shop at that time were severely injured in the attack. Though the brothers were taken for dressing their external wounds, the elder brother Bharat sustained internal injuries and within a week’s time on May 24, his health deteriorated and on the following day, he died. The post-mortem revealed that Bharat’s brain and nerves were damaged in the attack.

Pankaj had identified two main accused, Haneef and Shahrukh, for ransacking his shop and has affirmed of identifying them if produced before him. The FIR registered by the police has booked Sharukh, Haneef and others under Section 395(dacoity) while not mentioning the violence meted out by them.

A case under IPC section 295A (deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religions or religious beliefs) was not registered in this case despite the fact that Bharat Yadav was referred to as ‘kaafir’.

In another incident we reported yesterday, on Wednesday, 19 June in Dilari, Uttar Pradesh, a 54-year-old Gangaram was beaten up and killed by a Muslim mob after he had complained to the police about his daughter’s abduction.

While Tabrez’ unfortunate death gets editorial space across mainstream media and primetime debates are carried out on the same, Bharat Yadav’s lynching and hateful slurs are forgotten.

Just as beating up someone from another faith and forcing them to chant ‘Jai Shree Ram’ is wrong and should be punishable so is beating up someone and calling them ‘kaafirs’. However, the so-called hate-crime trackers only consider one of them as a ‘hate crime’. In case of Bharat Yadav, a case has not been filed under IPC section 295A because perhaps being called ‘kaafir’ a term used to refer to someone who doesn’t believe in Islam, and beating him to death is not communal enough.

Bombay HC directs Mehul Choksi to submit his medical reports, team of experts to determine whether he is fit to travel

After fugitive diamantaire Mehul Choksi submitted an affidavit in the Bombay High Court stating that he left India for medical treatment not to avoid prosecution and that he would return as soon as he becomes medically fit to travel, the High Court has directed his lawyers to submit the medical papers of his health condition by next Monday to be examined by a team of specialists.

His medical reports will be sent to JJ hospital in Mumbai where a team of experts led by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) will verify the reports and will determine whether he is fit for travelling or not. Choksi who is an accused in the multi-crore Punjab National Bank scam had stated in his affidavit that the ED and the CBI could interrogate him in Antigua where he is currently residing. “I am currently residing in Antigua and willing to co-operate in the investigation. If the court may deem fit, it may direct the investigating officer to travel to Antigua”, his affidavit read.

The ED termed Choksi’s claims as a facade to delay the legal proceedings. The agency had informed the court that it is willing to provide an air ambulance with medical experts to bring Choksi back to India and provide him with all the necessary medical treatment.

The team of experts will submit the final report before the Court on July 9 before the next hearing of the case which is scheduled for July 10.

Choksi has surrendered his Indian citizenship and handed over his Indian passport to Indian High Commission in Antigua. There were reports last year that he had taken Antiguan citizenship.

Jagan Mohan Reddy govt orders demolition of Praja Vedika built by Chandrababu Naidu, his house also on the list

The newly elected Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Jagan Mohan Reddy has passed demolition orders for Praja Vedika, a sprawling conference hall built by former Andhra Pradesh CM N Chandrababu Naidu at Vundvalli in Amravati. According to the new AP government, Naidu’s Praja Vedika flouts environmental laws.

CM Reddy on Monday declared all the buildings that came up on the banks of Krishna river were illegal and unauthorised constructions. He said these would be demolished one after the other starting Wednesday. This means Chandrababu Naidu’s palatial riverside residential house also may be demolished. Earlier YSRC MLA Alla Ramakrishna Reddy had said that Naidu will be evicted from his house as it was built illegally on riverbed. The house is owned by an industrialist from whom the previous AP government had leased it to use as CM’s residence till the official residences are built in Amaravati.

Praja Vedika, the conference hall next to Chandrababu Naidu’s house was being used by his party for government and party activities. Yesterday, ignoring Naidu’s plea for declaring the public property as his “residence annex,” the YSRCP government took possession of Praja Vedika. Also, all belongings of Naidu were reportedly thrown out by the Andhra Pradesh Capital Development Authority (APCRDA) and the premise was locked.

The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) termed this move as “vendetta politics” and alleged the state government showed no courtesy to the former CM as his belongings were thrown out of the building.

However, Reddy held his government’s first Collector’s Conference in the Praja Vedika hall and took the demolition decision of the building from within the building itself. “Praja Vedika is an illegal structure. It is constructed violating rules. A person of the stature of a Chief Minister had allowed construction of this building. If a CM himself violates rules, imagine the corruption prevailing down the administration?” he said.

Reddy added that he held the first Collector’s Conference from the Praja Vedika just to showcase how corruption is prevailing in the state. “This is the last meeting in this building. After Tuesday’s meeting with police officials including Director General of Police (DGP) and others, this building will be demolished. I order officials to demolish the building the very next day of the end of this meeting,” he said.

Moreover, a scuffle between the two parties also broke out at the council meeting of the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation yesterday after portraits of TDP leaders N T Rama Rao and N Chandrababu Naidu were replaced with that of present CM and Chief of YSR Congress Party Y S Jaganmohan Reddy at the council hall.

National Conference leader says people of Tral should not have voted for BJP as terrorists Burhan Wani and Zakir Musa were ‘martyred’ there

In a shocking speech, National Conference (NC) leader Ali Mohammad Sagar eulogized anti-India terrorists alleging that BJP made inroads in Kashmir in areas where Burhan Wani and Zakir Musa were shot down in an encounter by the Indian Armed Forces.

Sagar even elevated the slain terrorists’ status to that of ‘martyrs’ and referred to their ‘sacrifice’ by calling into question the people of Tral for voting BJP. “It is ironical that the people of Tral where Burhan Wani and Zakir Musa got martyred voted for the BJP. This should not have happened,” NC leader Sagar asserted.

The former minister and the general secretary of NC, Sagar was addressing a rally in South Kashmir during, which he ventured into connecting the deaths of terrorists with a political party’s electoral gains. The state of Jammu and Kashmir is currently under the President’s rule and may go for polls anytime.

South Kashmir, traditionally a stronghold of PDP, had rapidly ceded space to BJP as the saffron party started gaining more support and popularity in the region. With the possibility of assembly elections looming large and the threat of the BJP sweeping South Kashmir highly probable, the NC leader proceeded to glorify slain terrorists as ‘martyrs’ to appease the voters.

Incidentally, this has been the modus operandi of both the principal parties- PDP and NC in Jammu and Kashmir. Earlier this year, NC chief Omar Abdullah had accused Mehbooba Mufti of using dead terrorists to appease voters. Mufti, PDP chief was frequenting families of slain terrorists and lending an ear to their grievances.

In April Mufti had urged PM Narendra Modi to leave Kashmir if he thought that the state was a financial burden on the country.

Oyesomya: Army intelligence issues advisory to army personnel to not interact with suspected spy operating on Instagram

The Army intelligence has issued an advisory to army personnel against an Instagram profile ‘Oyesomya’ who is suspected of being an enemy spy trying to target army officers and special forces’ troops.

The said Instagram profile is no longer available. Last year, it was reported that a Pakistani spy who went by the name ‘Sejal’, ‘Neha’ and ‘Pooja’ honeytrapped a youth named Nishant Agarwal from Nagpur’s Brahmos Unit for allegedly selling defence secrets about India’s missile systems to his Pakistani ISI handlers. Nishant had been working in Nagpur’s Brahmos Aerospace Pvt. Ltd’s missile research centre in Nagpur for the last 4 years. He was wheedled into sharing the critical information about the missile systems with Pakistani counterparts by offering him a bait of $30,000 IT job in Canada.

Prior to that, Uttar Pradesh ATS team had arrested a BSF Jawan, Achutanand Misra, a resident of Madhya Pradesh’s Rewa district, for sharing vital information about India’s defence preparedness with ISI lackeys. He was “honey-trapped” by a woman claiming to be a journalist into sharing information about unit operational details, police academy and training centre. Before that, a person named Ramesh who worked as a cook in an Indian diplomat’s house was arrested by the Jammu and Kashmir military Intelligence Unit and the Uttar Pradesh police from Pithoragarh for bugging the house and passing off the information to the ISI. Last year, in March 2017, Aftab Ali was arrested for running an espionage racket in Uttar Pradesh.

‘Honey Trapping’ is a commonly used technique practised for very long by spy agencies to extract sensitive information. According to reports, 13 serving and retired defence personnel had been arrested for allegedly spying for the ISI or being part of its espionage racket in recent years.

Primary teachers protesting for salary hike detained by Kolkata police outside West Bengal assembly

Amidst the ongoing protests by state government primary teachers in West Bengal demanding revision in their pay scale, the Kolkata police today detained the protesting teachers outside the West Bengal Assembly.

The primary teachers have been staging protests since June 12 demanding an increment in their salaries as per their qualifications. On June 17, clashes had erupted between the Shishu Shiksha Kendra (SSK) and Madhyamik Shiksha Kendra (MSK) teachers and the police officials after they were stopped by the police at Mayukh Bhawan island while trying to reach Bikash Bhawan to meet the State Education Minister and put forward their grievances. This irked the protestors and the police resorted to baton-charging.

The salaries of the teachers have allegedly not been increased for the last eight years. According to the Teachers Unity Open Forum General Secretary, Moidul Islam, the SSK, and the MSK teachers get Rs 5,900 only as salary.

“We are 70,000 teachers. For the past eight years, our salary has not been increased by a single rupee. SSK and MSK teachers get Rs 5,900 as salary. We have given a deputation to the Education Minister several times. That’s why we have been sitting on a demonstration for the past six days. We will go to Bikash Bhawan. Our demand is to be given a salary according to our qualifications”, said Islam.

The teachers had earlier held protests in the month of March this year with the same demands and had also met the West Bengal Governor and the State Education Minister. They were reportedly assured that their demands would be heard after the Lok Sabha elections.

Kerala assembly session adjourned over NRI businessman’s suicide caused by CPM red tape

Today Kerala assembly session got adjourned following the loud protest of opposition parties over the suicide of NRI businessman Sajan Pariyal in Kannur. Allegedly, he had committed suicide due to red tape and corruption of CPM local authorities.

48-year-old Sajan was native of Valapattanam, Kannur. As per reports, he had worked in Nigeria for a decade and had decided to start his own business back home. He had built a convention centre spending Rs 15 crore. However, after construction, the Anthoor Municipal Corporation for months had turned down his repeated requests for a building occupancy certificate.

Unable to find a way out, on 18 June he committed suicide. His wife Beena had specifically accused PK Shyamala of the harassment meted out on Sajan. Shyamala is the municipal chairperson and wife of CPM central committee member M V Govindan. Beena said, “Shyamala threatened him that he would not be able to operate the convention centre, as long as she holds the chair”.

Reports suggest that Shyamala refused to give the licence because of a personal vendetta. While constructing the convention centre the municipality ordered to stop construction citing some non-existent technical violation. They had approached higher authorities including P Jayarajan who was the district town planner after which he got an approval to build the hall. The report claims that Shyamala was irked by this and Sajan was caught in between a turf war.

The Congress-led opposition took up the opportunity to attack the ruling party, blaming them for Sajan’s death. The Leader of Opposition in the Kerala Assembly, Ramesh Chennithala, accused the ruling CPM of protecting Shyamala and taking Sajan’s suicide lightly. Shyamala had offered to resign today but the CPM hasn’t taken any action against her.

While responding to the opposition’s demand to discuss on this issue today, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said, “we have already made some changes to the concept of ease of doing business and also the powers of the secretaries in the local bodies will also soon be cut, so cases like these won’t happen. In this case, once the probe results come out, none will be spared and very strong action would be coming”.

Unsatisfied with his response, Ramesh Chennithala alleged that Sajan had committed suicide due to factional feud in the ruling CPI-M at Kannur. The CPM had earlier suspended 4 Anthoor municipality officials, Ramesh had dismissed them as just being scapegoats. After Ramesh finished speaking, the opposition walked out, adjourning the House for the day.

The Kerala High Court had expressed its shock that an investor was pushed to suicide due to the insensitive attitude of the regulatory authorities. On Friday, the High Court registered a suo moto case and asked the government to submit a detailed report by July 15.

Tendulkar unhappy with MS Dhoni’s lack of intent

Former Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar has criticised MS Dhoni and Kedar Jadhav for the lack of intent in their match against Afghanistan.

Both Dhoni and Jadhav played a slow knock which and scored just 57 runs in 14 overs from 30 to 44. Dhoni was real slow in his approach and made only 28 runs in 52 balls at a strike rate of 53.84, the slowest by any batsman who played more than 10 balls in the innings.

Speaking to India Today after the game, Tendulkar said, “MS Dhoni is a senior player and should show positive intent. Afghanistan’s bowling is good but you can’t score only 119 runs in 34 overs. He did not show any positive intent against Afghanistan.”

Indian innings finished at 224 for 8, and Afghanistan then got to within two shots of pulling off the shock of the World Cup before Shami took a hat-trick.

“There were more than 2-3 dot balls. After Virat got out in the 38th over and till the 45th over we hadn’t scored many runs. There were not enough outings for the middle order batsmen till now and that put pressure on them. But the intent could have been much better by the middle order batsmen,” said Tendulkar.

Tendulkar played 6 World Cups for India in which he scored 2278 runs at an average of 56.95 and with a strike rate of 88.98. He holds the record of most runs (2278), centuries (6), half-centuries (15), boundaries (268) man of the match awards (9) in World Cup tournament.
