As Delhi grapples with air pollution, CM Kejriwal takes a private trip to Dubai: Reports

The national capital is choking with severe air pollution as winter sets in and smog makes the air difficult to breathe, its CM has left the country for a private trip. According to a report in the Times Now, the Delhi CM has left for Dubai with his wife Sunita Kejriwal on a private trip.

Reportedly, Kejriwal has taken an Air India flight to Dubai last night. The report claims that power minister Satyendra Kumar had also taken a week-long trip to Dubai recently.

The Delhi government is, however, maintaining complete silence over the trip and not giving any information to the media, the report added. Many people have expressed their displeasure at the CM leaving for a foreign trip while the city is struggling with hazardous levels of air pollution.

Former AAP leader Kapil Mishra has also criticised the timing and secrecy of the CM’s trip.

It is notable here that Delhi’s air pollution has remained in ‘severe’ category since a couple of days. The Delhi government has been criticised on several occasions for its failure to curb air pollution levels. Last year, it was revealed that the Kejriwal government had been sitting on Rs 787 crores of environment cess collected and had been busy bickering with the CMs of the neighbouring states while Delhi’s air remained toxic.

The National Green Tribunal had also slammed the Kejriwal government for not taking sincere steps to curb pollution. The Delhi HC had also slammed the Delhi government for their lack of good governance.

A day after PM Modi attacked Congress, Raj Babbar defends his statement calling Maoists as ‘Revolutionaries’

After Prime Minister Modi mounted a scathing attack on Congress for its alleged support to the left wing terrorists, senior Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Raj Babbar has said that he stands by his statements of referring Naxal terrorists as ‘Revolutionaries’.

Earlier, the actor-turned-politician during a poll campaign in Chattisgarh had compared Naxals to revolutionaries saying that “revolution” undertaken by them should be resolved through talks. Babbar had said that people whose rights have been taken away are laying their lives to get back their rights. He had sympathised with left-wing terrorists saying that usage of guns by either of the parties will not lead to any solution.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi while addressing a rally in poll-bound Chhattisgarh’s Jagdalpur yesterday had slammed Congress party for terming Naxals as ‘Revolutionaries’ and also had accused Congress leaders of protecting these ‘Urban Maoists’.

Responding to Prime Minister Modi’s scathing attack, Raj Babbar said, “I will again say what I have said before. Revolution happens with ideas and behaviour, with the weapon comes terrorism. Rights are gained by ballot not bullets. With bullets comes terrorism. I have said it earlier whatever they call themselves, you may name them as you like, but that deed should be done”.

Raj Babbar went on to defend his statements by saying that prominent leaders of the Congress party were killed by the bullets. He said that BJP should stop using such words to insult the revolutionaries.

“These are not just words, it’s a warning, by using such words they are insulting the revolutionaries. It’s important for people to talk about revolution. I had previously said that people who are spoiled, pick weapons and become terrorists,” said Raj Babbar.

Demonetisation: Step that kick started the digitisation process and formalised a large chunk of the Economy

Often the arguments against demonetization rely on evoking the image of a vulnerable man standing for what seems like aeons to withdraw his money or the singular statistic of more than 99% of cash is back, therefore demonetization is a failure. One is a pure political narrative taken in isolation from any economic analysis, and the other a classic example of misleading statistic deprived of any context.

It is true that demonetization didn’t come without costs, just like any other policy. However, these costs must be viewed in the broader goals of what the policy is trying to achieve – which I broadly want to summarize in three broad categories – the advent of the digital economy, digitization of processes and, formalization.

Demonetization’s biggest and most unchallenged victory has been in fostering an ecosystem of digital payments, a critical aspect of the digital economy. The governments Unified Payments Interface (UPI), which has formed the backbone of digital transactions for multiple global and national platforms in India has grown from a mere 100,000 transactions at the time of demonetization to over 485 million transactions last month alone. UPI is one of the 5 ways in which the average Indian is transacting online, for the new Indian getting connected, there are unique innovations for India such as the USSD code which allows for verified and secure digital banking by dialling 4 digits.

The government has ensured that digital payments aren’t just a tool used by a certain section of the economy for booking movie tickets or paying a ride-hailing service, in fact, the biggest avenue of success has been in ensuring that the rightful beneficiaries of over 434 government schemes get their benefits on a timely basis through Direct Benefits Transfer (DBT). Based on the linking of Jan-Dhan bank accounts to the Aadhaar and using the Mobile as a medium of access, the JAM trinity has fostered the deliverance of benefits to over 41 crore Indians last year alone. The image of long queues at ATM lines must be juxtaposed against the image of beneficiaries, long-suffering with the burden of corruption, inefficiency and palm greasing finally gaining true access to their rights.

There is a reason that this government was able to implement the GST less than a year after November 8th, 2016 when the previous governments were trying to do the same term after term. Demonetization ushered in an ecosystem of digitization, using technology and policy but most importantly, making people aware of the benefits of operating in a technology backed, transparency economy. GST has allowed for the easy tax filing and seamless nationwide business for enterprises who were struggling with the cumbersome state and national taxes. The digital nature of GST has meant that businesses and governments have real-time micro and macro updates and this repository of data has been instrumental in the government being able to approve business loans under 1 crore rupees in 59 minutes.

Over 1 trillion rupees was collected under the GST last month, which proves something bigger – that India is realizing the benefits of operating under the formal economy. Business employees who have transitioned into the formal sector are seeing the benefits of greater financial and social security.

Demonetization led formalization has also meant that there has been a 25% increase in income taxes filed last year alone, the policy has disrupted India’s status quo of operating in the parallel economy which stood for inequality and tax evasion. Demonetization has removed anonymity from the economy and has ensured that the money that is in the system is being traced to ensure the greatest benefit for the greatest number.

The truth of the matter is that if India had to leapfrog into the 4th Industrial Revolution as it is doing today, then the journey would not have been possible without the kickstart of demonetization. The world has equally recognized India’s efforts, research and development in the process of digitization, evident by a record-breaking 2 continuous years of being amongst the top 10 economies of the world working hard towards easing the process of doing business.

India has set out on a new path of the digital-based transparent economy. This will ultimately end up buttressing economic growth and social welfare. The Demonetization acted as a positive nudge to usher this New India of 2022.

Swami Sanand’s death would sit heavy on Prime Minister Modi’s conscience

We all need to go beyond the death of fasting Swami Sanand (October 11, 2018) and the disappointment he carried to his pyre at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s indifference to his demands for “Aviral Ganga.”

His no longer can be treated as an unfortunate incident for it throws up a whole lot of disturbing questions about the present ruling dispensation, unethical Congress, the clique of Sadhus, and above all an ecological disaster which awaits at least 40 million Indians if Maa Ganga goes.

If you cared to look on Youtube, you would be startled by the lucidity and conviction of the great man, how logical and disappointed he sounded on Prime Ministers, ministers, high bureaucrats, media and his own fraternity of sanyasis and sadhus, how instructional he is to individuals like you and me about trusting no one but yourself in achieving a higher cultural and ecological goal.

Those who hold the Hindu heritage and its revival as their life’s mission; that PM Narendra Modi is the harbinger of that change, would be sorely wounded hearing the great devotee says “there can be no bigger conspiracy than Namami Gange” and that over Rs 20,000 crores spent on the holy river since 1986–and hundreds and thousands of crores more in pipeline–has been such a terrible, colossal waste.

He makes you shudder to the bones when he asks how the holy water, considered essential for a dying Hindu in every household, whose ashes if submerged in the holy river could pave the way for “nirvana”, which makes 10-12 crore devotees gather in faith in a Kumbh Mela; whose bacterial properties are lauded in 11 of 18 Puranas; which Krishna mentions in Bhagwad Gita as a dual image of his own, whose water once remained pure in jars even after decades, is hugely disease-prone today.

His stark questions to Uttarakhand government that it promotes and earns millions in the name of holy tourism in Haridwar and Rishikesh; make visits of “kanwarias” as a moment to whip up the holy sentiments; and yet makes no attempt to stop hundreds of “barsati naaluhs” (rain-fed drains) from throwing its waste into the holy river; the debris of construction which further pollutes the river; the unbridled sand-mining, is a reflection of willful corrupt hypocrisy of the state.

To the Central government, he outlines the wrong methodology of measuring the contaminated Ganga water; the hundreds of dams which are under construction/planned, usurping of Ganga’s lands, the obfuscation between a judicial order and the real situation on the ground.

All of it made him undertake multiple fasts since 2008 when he forsake his identity of G.D. Agarwal, a graduate from Berkley University, an IIT-professor; an original member-secretary of the Central Pollution Control Board, and took to “sanyas” all with the sole purpose of devoting the rest of his life to the service of the mighty river he always addressed as Gangaji or Maa Ganga (“Like all women are not your mother; all rivers are not Gangaji”, is one of his famous euphemism).

He believed implicitly in the vow of PM Narendra Modi on the banks of river Ganga in Varanasi as his “mother” but then over a period of four-and-a-half years saw the uselessness of “Namami Gange” and the same bureaucratic apathy. His first two letters to Modi during his final and fatal fast were initially addressed as “my younger brother” before his final letter took a formal tone. None of them elicited a response.

Politicians cutting across party lines are shown in poor light in various audios and videos which are listed at the end of this article and which are a source of all the facts in this article. MatraSadan, where he lived and fasted in Haridwar, issued a transcript of Swami Sanand’s conversation with Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, in charge of the Ganga Rejuvenation project, which shows a gut-wrenching apathy.

Swami Sanand’s interview with Madhu Purnima Kishwar mentions how then Union Minister Jairam Ramesh once refused to scuttle a project since Rs. 500 crores had been spent on it. “If money is the issue, we would raise Rs 500 crores for you,” retorted Swami Sanand. “And our commission?” said Ramesh, rather jestingly. “We would arrange it too,” sniped back Swami Sanand.

Swami Sanand’s views are readily available on YouTube on how he was forcibly admitted in AIIMS; how visitors couldn’t reach him in hospital even in visitors’ hours unless they were screened; how his faith in fellow sadhus and sanyasis—“all sadhus are dhongis, maukhata lagaye huan hain “(all Sadhus are hypocrites and two-faced)”—and even in his own Guru and Shankracharya—“how my private emails to government were instantly made available to them and how I was subsequently rebuked by them”—was completely eroded by the end of his legendary life. Not to mention environmentalist Sunita Narain who he found making excuses for her absence to Ganga’s cause.

And what this fuss was all about?

Because Swami Sanand scientifically knew more about the Ganga than ordinary folks in this country do. The holy river which begins in Gangotri glacier in Himalayas’s southern slope and runs through India and Bangladesh, a total distance of 2520 kms, home to 140 different species of fish and 90 species of amphibians, many of them now extinct, is the mother which nurtured India’s civilization for tens of thousands of years. It created the arable lands, lush forests, supported life which allowed the cultural, intellectual and religious magnificence of this country to flourish and endure.

The sediment-rich flow of Ganga and Brahmaputra is the largest known river delta in the world, spanning 59,000 square kilometres, supporting the livelihood of 400 million people. Vedas heavily mention Ganga as a sacred river.

It’s just not water alone—though it’s important enough for who survives without water?—but it’s unique properties. DS Bhargava of the University of Roorkee found Ganga to decompose organic waste at 15-25 rates faster than any other river of the world.

New Delhi’s Malaria Research Center claimed that water taken from Gange’s upper ambit prevented mosquito breeding. British bacteriologist Ernest Hanbury Hankin found out in 1896 that Vibrio Cholerae, a deadly bacterium known to spread Cholera, was killed within three hours after it was added in water from Ganga. He eventually concluded that Ganga—and the Yamuna—have been largely responsible for preventing the spread of cholera.

Swami Sanand’s death to Gangaji’s cause was not the first one. Swami Nigmananda had died for a similar cause, seven years ago in 2011. Swami Sanand’s had famously predicted that Swami Nigmananda’s death would make 10 Nigmananda’s sacrifice their lives. He himself was to be the next in line. The people we choose to effect the change, however, remain indifferent. Ganga remains a dump of our waste. Nothing but a mass resistance would do if Ganga is to survive.

Tipu Jayanti: Karnataka government imposes section 144 in several places

The Tipu Sultan Jayanti celebrations planned by the Congress-JDS government in Karnataka has been met with severe protests and condemnations. After reports that several social groups and the BJP are planning to disrupt the state-sponsored celebrations, the government has imposed section 144 in several places in the state.

Section 144 has been imposed in Hubli, Dharwad and Shivamogga and several places in Kodagu. The curfew has been announced from 6 am on November 10 to 7 am on November 11.

As the Congress-JDS government remains adamant on celebrating the Tipu Sultan Jayanti, it is being said that CM Kumaraswamy will not be attending the festivities. BJP and several Hindu groups, especially of the Kodagu region have been protesting against the state-sponsored celebrations of the birth anniversary of the 18th-century ruler of Mysuru.

The Congress government had started the Tipu Jayanti celebrations from 2015 in the state. The BJP and Hindu groups like Sri Ram Sene and Hindu Janajaguti Samiti have opposed the state-sponsored event commemorating the 18th-century tyrant.

BJP leader and MP Anant Kumar Hegde had clarified that he will not be attending the celebrations and had stated to the Karnataka government not to include his name in the list of invitees. Reports have also claimed the name of CM HD Kumaraswamy has been excluded from the official list of invitees as the Gowda believe that being a part of the Tipu Jayanti celebrations will bring them bad luck. However, his office has reportedly stated that the CM will miss the official events due to medical reasons.

Reports have stated that the official celebrations of Tipu Jayanti have been organised in Vidhana Soudha. G Parameswara, the state home minister, who will be heading the event in absence of the CM had announced that the event should be celebrated indoors and the posters and the banners of the event should be allowed there only.

BJP had been opposed to the Tipu Jayanti celebrations and has held protests in several areas claiming that the state-sponsored celebrations for a tyrant who was responsible for the deaths of thousands of Hindus in the Kodagu and Mysuru region is hurtful towards Hindus.

Foul mouthed Sanjay Nirupam strikes again, goes on a tirade against PM Modi

Rahul Gandhi’s party seems to come up with new ways to abuse the Prime Minister everyday. This time, Sanjay Nirupam, who has a history of abusing PM Modi has once again created a controversy by saying in future Modi may blame Congress for his birth.

Mumbai Congress President Sanjay Nirupam while addressing a protest rally against the second anniversary of demonetisation said, “Narendra Modi, since the day he rose to power, has been blaming Congress party for every wrong thing that is happening in the country and in future PM Narendra Modi may say that Congress is the reason for his birth”.

Sanjay Nirupam went on to say that the people of the country will “politically” hang PM Modi in 2019 General Elections to take revenge against the hardships they suffered due to demonetisation. The Mumbai Congress had organised a rally in which controversial placards and banners were put up, quoting, “We are reminding the PM of his own statement when he said — Hang me if demonetisation is wrong”.

Nirupam defended the posters by saying that this is the statement made by the Prime Minister and not by the Congress party. He went on to question PM Modi on his promise to give an account of demonetisation after 50 days. He cited Modi saying that if this decision is proven to be wrong, people can hang him publicly. “More than 600 days have passed now, but the prime minister has refrained from speaking about the decision of demonetisation ever since,” said Nirupam.

This is not the first time that Sanjay Nirupam has used crass language. He had recently used foul language to refer PM Modi as ‘illiterate and uncouth’. Sanjay Nirupam’s offensive tirade is not limited to PM Modi, as earlier he had tweeted a sexist tweet on Smriti Irani after the fake news circular was withdrawn. Recently, after the Karnataka elections concluded, he had used vile and derogatory language for the Karnataka governor.

Earlier, senior Congress leader from Karnataka, TB Jayachandra had also made derogatory statements against the Prime Minister saying that time has come to burn down PM Modi.

Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar had also taken digs at PM Modi’s humble beginnings and called him a ‘chaiwalla’. He had also referred to Modi as ‘neech insaan’ which got him suspended from Congress. Shashi Tharoor had recently called him as a ‘Scorpion sitting on a Shivling’ and they cannot him with a ‘Chappal’.

It is time to burn Modi alive: Senior Congress leader TB Jayachandra’s shocking statement

In yet another attempt to demean the post of the Prime Minister by displaying their hate towards PM Narendra Modi, senior Congress leader from Karnataka, TB Jayachandra said that time has arrived to burn down PM Modi, reported ANI.

The Congress leader’s open call for ‘burning Modi alive’ is nothing less than a clear incitement to violence against the topmost leader of the country.

Former Minister TB Jayachandra while talking to media during a protest event staged against the NDA government for its decision to ban high-value currency through demonetisation on 8th November 2016, said that the day has come when we must burn Narendra Modi alive.

Former Chief Minister and BJP leader BS Yeddyurappa reacted to TB Jayachandra’s statements, said that Congress leaders have lost their mental balance and are issuing these hateful statements as they are intolerant towards PM Modi after seeing his rise. He further said that TB Jayachandra’s statement is a matter of shame and he should immediately apologise for statements, failing a defamation suit will be filed against the former Law Minister Jayachandra.

However, the Congress leader when confronted over his shameful remarks, brazened it out. “It’s his own statement, I am just reminding him. I said nothing wrong,” reportedly said the Congress leader.

This is not the first time that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been abused by the leaders of the opposition parties. Recently, Andhra Finance Minister Yanamala Ramakrishnudu on Saturday referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi as an ‘Anaconda’ and had asked if there was a “bigger anaconda” than Modi.

The opposition leaders such as Mani Shankar Aiyar have frequently abused Prime Minister Narendra Modi by referring to him ‘Chaiwala’ and ‘Neech Insan’ as an attempt to lower the dignity of Narendra Modi. Congress leaders like Manish Tiwari and Digvijaya Singh have often resorted to using derogatory words against the Prime Minister.

Another abusive Congress leader Sanjay Nirupam has abused Prime Minister Modi several times and recently had used foul language to refer PM Modi as ‘illiterate and uncouth’.

Congress was in Dhritrashtra mode for 10 years against corruption: BJP on Rahul Gandhi’s demonetisation jibe

Addressing a rally in poll-bound Chhattisgarh, Congress President Rahul Gandhi went on his rhetorics where he asked the audience if they have seen any rich and corrupt person getting down from their luxurious cars and standing in the ATM queue to withdraw money. He added that only poor and underprivileged were targeted by the demonetisation move while the rich and wealthy escaped unscathed.

Countering Rahul Gandhi, BJP spokesperson Dr Sambit Patra, while addressing the media, quipped that he has seen the Congress president Rahul Gandhi alighting from his luxurious car worth Rs 4 crores to withdraw his money from the ATMs.

He alleged that for 10 long years in the government, Congress was in Dhritrashtra mode against these corrupt shell companies, turning a blind eye against them but as soon as they were hurt from the demonetisation move, Rahul Gandhi started shedding tears for them.

Extolling demonetisation’s benefits, Patra said that it was a positive move towards formalisation of the economy which was hitherto largely informal in nature. The move significantly augmented the tax base and there was a marked advancement of Digitalisation of the economy after demonetisation.

Patra asserted that over 2 lakh shell companies that existed during the 10 years Congress was at the centre from 2004 to 2014 were closed down immediately after demonetisation. “The Naxalites were worst hit by demonetisation but those who view them as ‘revolutionaries’ will certainly not like demonetisation owing to its disastrous ramifications on Naxals”, he quipped. He even mentioned that demonetisation triggered the biggest ever surrender of Naxals.

Earlier during the day, Prime Minister Modi while addressing a rally at Chhattisgarh had said that the Congress was busy supporting those ‘Urban Maoists’ who sit in their luxury homes while the Adivasis suffer. Chhattisgarh goes to elections in the first phase on 12th November where most of the districts are Naxal-affected.

Barkha Dutt uses fake data and biased rhetoric to deny the institutional discrimination Hindus suffer in India

ThePrint on Friday published a video on Twitter featuring Barkha Dutt on the issue, “Are Hindus really the victims in India?”

As readers might have guessed, Barkha employs every weapon in her formidable arsenal including completely false equivalences and fake data to back her arguments. In the video, Barkha compares the tradition barring the entry of women between 10 to 50 years of age at Sabarimala Temple with the heinous practice of Triple Talaq. Because, of course, in Barkha’s world, denial of entry to women at one particular Temple among hundreds and thousands is somehow comparable to the institutional denial of rights to Muslim women and the consequent emotional harassment and even sexual exploitation which they have to suffer.

Triple Talaq is a practice that dehumanizes Muslim women and stems from intrinsic misogyny inherent in the culture while the tradition at Sabarimala is based on the Naishtik Brahmachari aspect of that particular Deity and not due to any negative attitude towards women. There is no comparison. It is quite evident that she can’t appreciate the diversity of pagan religious structures due to her Abrahamic view of the world.

Then, she used sweeping strokes to brush aside legitimate Hindu concerns as if they are based on fictitious lies. She says the Indian politics has essentially transformed into a battle between Hindutva and Hindu lite and that Hindus in 2018 are politically assertive, aggressive and emboldened. But that does not negate the fact that Hindus are constitutionally discriminated against or that Hindus are denied rights which are guaranteed to minority communities. Barkha employs rhetoric not based on hard facts to completely brush aside legitimate arguments regarding institutional discrimination of Hindus.

Does the RTE Act not selectively apply to Hindu run schools while minority institutions are granted an exemption? Have the Articles 26-30 not been used to grant special rights to the minorities while denying Hindus the same rights? Does the secular state not selectively control and loot Hindu Temples while giving minority communities the complete right to manage their own religious institutions without governmental influence? These are the questions Barkha Dutt needs to answer if she is honest about her intentions and I am afraid these questions are not as easy to brush aside as she did in that video.

Barkha Dutt also mentions the Charter of Hindu Demands, only to rubbish its contents, of course. She mentions this particular line from the Charter to disparage its salient contents, “The resistance to the illegal activities of beef/meat mafia is naturally leading to the law & order problems which are being falsely dubbed as lynching at the behest of the beef/meat mafia which has enormous money and muscle power.”

Is it not true that the route on which Rakbar Khan, one of the victims of ‘lynching’, was confronted by Gau Rakshaks was a regular for smugglers? Is it not true that Rakbar Khan could be seen alive in the custody of the Police? There are a lot of nuances to the issue of cow smuggling that needs closer inspection but one truth that cannot be denied is the fact that it is rampant, they shoot at police and commoners alike and sometimes kill them and also, sometimes, Gau Rakshaks do take matter into their own hands when they confront those they suspect to be cow smugglers. These are the hard facts. Maligning the Hindu Charter based on one particular is extremely dishonest from Barkha Dutt but then it’s not really surprising.

Barkha Dutt also uses discredited data by IndiaSpend to claim that 84% of victims of cow-related violence between 2010-17 are Muslims and that 97% of these attacks have taken place in the last 4 years. In an earlier report, we have elaborated on how the organization does not use any primary source for their data and their entire data was based on English media news reports which suffer from their own bias. On top of that, the data was cherry-picked to build the narrative of Hindus attacking Muslims and entirely ignoring the victims of cow smugglers who are Hindus. Their statistic basically was based on google searches and any journalist worth their salt would throw such garbage in the dustbin where it belongs. Instead, here we have Barkha relying on such garbage to further her narrative.

The video is not surprising considering Barkha’s own track record. She has, in the past, attempted to justify the genocide and exodus of Kashmiri Pandits by claiming that they had better jobs while the Kashmiri Muslims were economically disenfranchised. On another occasion, she prodded a stone pelter and asked him whether he was doing it for Kashmir right after he firmly said that he was doing it for Islam. She has been known to further a particular agenda that is not conducive to Indian interests due to her opposition to the government at the centre.

The only thing that Barkha does get right in her video is the fact that Hindus are not hapless victims. As events at Sabarimala and during Diwali have shown, Hindus are perfectly capable of coming together to defend their traditions and their culture without relying on any political party.

Every cracker burst this Diwali had a message that echoed through the Country

If we had been told how the crop burning in Haryana and Punjab were being tackled on a war footing or how the planting patterns were being monitored and how peripheral roads into the NCR were being fast-tracked so that the number of trucks plying through the capital was reduced.

Or If we knew multiple metro lines were being rapidly laid so that people were encouraged to infrequently use their private vehicles, or the bus service was being brought up to speed.

If leaf burning was seriously prohibited and compost pits were not being used for trash but making manure.

If construction sites were actually being sprinkled with water at the end of the day to reduce the deadly fine dust particle.

If the cost of owning multiple cars was made prohibitive to control vehicular traffic & its emissions….

If polluting industries were penalized.

If the green cover of the NCR was being enhanced instead of being depleted.

If we were told all of this or any of this, we would be comforted that the agencies responsible were on the job and were working towards giving us clean air & hopefully one day soon in the future, blue skies.

It has been noted worldwide that when people see an honest and concerted effort by Governments to formulate a long-term policy that will benefit every person in every family, they rise to the occasion too.

Swachh Bharat Movement is one such example which India has made its own. We also saw that for Demonetization. (If it was a success or not isn’t an argument which I will deviate into now)

The common man stood in queues, uncomplaining because he believed the leader behind the idea had a greater good in mind.

In fact, the ordinary Indian became a soldier in that fight and was proud of it.

How did the Ministry which proposed the idea and the Supreme Court, eager in its almost evangelical zeal, even for a moment conclude that a cracker ban on Diwali was the solution to our pollution problems?

Is it that they don’t understand the problem at all?

Or is that they have no idea how to handle it?

Or was it simply a case of taking for granted a compliant community because all else had failed?

What seems even more surprising, is that they actually believed people would quietly comply on this very important festival & the ban could be enforced with a ratio of 150 policemen to a 100,000 Indians.

Surely lawmakers understand the psychology of the business.

To preach one must be seen to be blemish free.

To lead one must be seen to have integrity.

To deliver justice one must be seen to be impartial.

When citizens see –

Thieves, rapists, murderers let off without even a rap on the knuckles. The wealthy and powerful swagger fearlessly & live by their own rules. Certain communities and faiths handled with kid gloves, despite inconvenience & insensitivity to the citizenry at large, they cynically recognize that the dispensers of justice are neither blemish free, have integrity or are impartial.

It has also been regrettably noted that where the State & the Judiciary are least fearful, they come down with all their might-

As on protestors while they slept at Baba Ramdev’s rally and on Sabarimala devotees as they make their way to the deity, while we debate ourselves hoarse as our soldiers are seriously injured or killed by Kashmiri stone pelters.

As on Jallikatu which it seems is crueller than the slow slaughter of goats & camels on the streets, filling open drains with blood on Eid.

As on human pyramids of Dahi Handi which are perceived to be more dangerous than slashing swords & knives used at Moharram.

As on a poor farmer protecting his much-loved cow who is considered more dangerous & inimical than armed cattle smugglers.

Surely, surely the fierce reaction to the onslaught by the Judiciary & the State on a much-revered SINGLE temple tradition should have been a lesson in a hurry to both – that Hindus no longer wish to remain compliant, taken for granted & needled.

Each cracker explosion, each sparkler, anaar and chakri, by no means ‘green’, well before and beyond the mandated hours was a message:

One section of society is not the only stakeholder to maintain law & order.

The one that has to carry the burden of ‘secularism’, accommodate and accept every passing opinion on its celebrations and tradition. It is also not the only one responsible for pollution.

The States and Centre must get their act together & state their intentions clearly before putting the onus on anyone.

It would be interesting and educative to know that why was the cracker ban extended beyond the borders of the NCR and as far as the coastal regions, which don’t suffer a pollution problem.

The messaging is indeed confusing.

Are they fighting pollution or the festival of Diwali itself?

One recalls what Ayn Rand wrote in the Atlas Shrugged:

“Did you really think we want those laws observed?” said Dr Ferris.

“We want them to be broken.

You’d better get it straight that it’s not a bunch of boy scouts you’re up against… We’re after power and we mean it… There’s no way to rule innocent men.

The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals.

Well, when there aren’t enough criminals one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws.

Who wants a nation of law-abiding citizens?

What’s there in that for anyone?

But just pass the kind of laws that can neither be observed nor enforced or objectively interpreted – and you create a nation of law-breakers – and then you cash in on guilt.

Now that’s the system, Mr Reardon, that’s the game, and once you understand it, you’ll be much easier to deal with.”
