NCPCR report reveals a significant decline in child marriages across India, prevalence highest among SC/ST castes

0

The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights, in its report released on Tuesday, has stated that the number of girls getting married in the 15-19 years age group has come down significantly in the last decade. The NCPCR report states that from 26.5% in 2005-06, the percentage has come down to 11.9% in 2015-16.

The report is based on comparative data analysis in child marriages from the third and fourth rounds of the National Family Health Survey. It has been prepared by a research center named Young Lives India, in collaboration with the NCPCR. The report states that according to the NFHS, the prevalence of girl child marriage in the 15-19 age group is 14% in rural India and 6% in urban India respectively.

According to reports, what is cited as worrisome by experts is that despite declining trends there are still 100 districts spread across 14 states where the prevalence is higher than the national average. Bihar leads in the maximum number of districts with higher prevalence rate (20). Amongst all the districts Murshidabad in West Bengal has the maximum prevalence rate at 39.9% with Gandhinagar (Gujrat) and Bhilwara(Rajasthan) following with 39.3% and 36.4% respectively.

The report also states that the prevalence of child marriage is negatively impacted by the family’s economic status, with 16.6% prevalence seen in bottom tercile households while top tercile households showing only 5.4% prevalence.

The report also focuses on pregnancy and childbirth rates among teenage mothers. The sample data shows that more than a quarter of the married teenagers have had a child before they turned 17. it cites societal pressure and lack of reproductive health awareness as the main causes of teenage pregnancies and childbirth. 4.2% of the total number of teenage married girls were found to have 2 or more children.

The data also revealed that the highest percentage(15%) of teenage married girls was found amongst the scheduled tribe (ST) castes followed by SC castes with 13%. The report also states that 38% of teenage married girls have a low body mass index and were at the risk of being under-nourished.

The report also states that there is a direct correlation between education and child marriage. The data showed that girls who have completed secondary school education are less likely to be married before they turn 19. The prevalence of child marriage is the least (2.4%) among girls who have completed secondary school education while it is significantly higher in girls with no education and primary school dropouts.

The politics of ironies: Getting away with assassination of a former PM

0

Tamil Nadu government has recently recommended the governor, Banwarilal Purohit to accept the clemency petition under article 161 by one of the assassins of Rajiv Gandhi, AG Perarivalan. Article 161 of constitution deals with the jurisdiction of governor and grants governor the power to provide respite, suspend or to commute any punishment, be it death penalty or life imprisonment if a convict(penalised by state law) sends a mercy petition.

Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated in a Suicide bomb-blast on 21 May 1991, by Thenmozhi Rajaratnam AKA Dhanu, sent by the Liberation of Tamil Tiger Eelam, a secessionist and terrorist organization, that time active in Sri Lanka. The whole operation was coordinated in the forests of Jaffna by LTTE chief Prabhakaran. The whole conspiracy was rooted in events emerging from ‘87 after Rajiv Gandhi had signed the Indo-Sri Lankan Accords, and sent Indian Troops for peace negotiations in Sri Lanka, to bail out a civil war-struck Sri Lanka.

BJP was threatening the central government of withdrawing support and rise of Congress back to power in the centre was inevitable. This meant re-implementation of Indian Peacekeeping Forces in Sri Lanka and a more aggravated crackdown on LTTE handles active in India, especially south.

After Congress withdrew the support from Chandra Shekhar’s SJP(R) government, and India was pulled into re-elections merely after 16 months of previous Lok Sabha elections. There couldn’t have been a better time for LTTE to have struck Rajiv Gandhi, as he was stripped of PM level security and he was vulnerable during the constituency-to-constituency election campaign.

At Sriperumbudur, all the events culminated in the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi along with many others and more than 40 people were critically injured. In August this year when a question was asked regarding the assassination, Congress President and Rajiv Gandhi’s son Rahul Gandhi said that he had no grudge against perpetrators of his father’s death and that he was appalled by the pictures of dead Prabhakaran in 2009. Rahul Gandhi wanted to paint an image of him being very forgiving and generous towards his personal nemesis, even if it meant pardoning his father’s murderers.

Nalini Sriharan, the women at whose house Dhanu had strapped the bomb and hidden, and, one of the seven convicts were awarded life imprisonment in 2000 had thanked Rahul Gandhi for not interfering in SC hearing regarding the mercy petition for the release of all convicts in Rajiv Gandhi assassination case.

What Rahul Gandhi should remember is that Rajiv Gandhi was not just his father, but also ex-PM of India(and probably the next PM) in 1991. His death was not just his personal loss, but a loss to the whole country. Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination had made India look vulnerable. It had exposed the gaping holes in our politics, defence and foreign affairs. Prabhakaran, had the blood of thousands of people on his hands when he was hunted down by Chinese forces in 2009.

UN reported total casualties to be more than 1 lakh at the end of the Sri Lankan civil war in 2009. What had started just as a protest against linguistic and cultural domination, was morphed into a bloody and vicious Civil War. Prabhakaran had brainwashed thousands of young minds to militate against Sri Lankan government and had made terrorists out of them. LTTE was responsible for the killing of 1200 soldiers from the Indian side(Total casualties during Kargil war was 527), who had gone to Sri Lanka as peacekeeping forces. The Indian government was an arch-enemy of Prabhakaran. He could have gone to any extent to achieve his diabolical goals, even it meant killing own Tamils(whose cause he always said to be his own).

For Rahul Gandhi to say that he was appalled by the death of the main mastermind behind all this, seems just like a political stunt. First and foremost, the killers were not culprits to the Gandhi family alone, they had committed a national crime. They are the culprits to the nation and not subject to any personal moral relief. India had played its role as peace spreading entity and had to pay a heavy price for it. The attack was a dent on India’s goals and ideas. I would like to ask Mr Rahul Gandhi if he knows Dharman, a 38-year-old police constable who also died in the bomb blast that killed Rajiv Gandhi. He was survived by his two small children. Kokilavani had read a beautiful poem dedicated to Rajiv Gandhi, just a few moments before Rajiv Gandhi’s death. She had her whole life ahead of her, the perpetrators did not give a damn about the likes of her. Her body was blown to smithereens in that blast. Has Rahul Gandhi even pardoned killers of that girl, too?

Several others, along with Dharman and 12-year-old Kokilavani, were killed in the blast. LTTE had not only taken an aim on an ex-PM, but also on India’s people and sovereignty. This was a tragedy of several families, not only one.

Authorities could not even identify Rajiv Gandhi’s body after the blast. Bodies of others were identified after great efforts. How can we just let the perpetrators involved in this ghastly misdemeanour, go? What Mr Rahul Gandhi needs to realize is that a PM belongs more to the country than the family. Be it assassination of Indira Gandhi by her own bodyguards, or mysterious death of Lal Bahadur Shastri just after the Tashkent accords. Deaths of national leaders have always given a big blow to India’s stability. They have always bred turmoil and consternation, in public.

Since we are discussing the mercy petitions filed by the convicts, not adding the contents of their petition would be a blatant bias. Perarivalan, has stated that he has been in incarceration for more than 25 years, and it’s more than enough for his crimes. Even Nalini, Murugan (Nalini’s husband) and Jayakumar had a similar appeal to make. What needs to be added is here, all convicts(along with 22 others) who have filed the petition were awarded death penalty under TADA. But later on, only 4 remained with death penalties.

Sonia Gandhi intervened in the year 2000 and had asked the court to provide respite to Nalini and convert her death sentence into life imprisonment. Other three were to be hanged on September 9, 2011, after Pratibha Patil rejected the mercy petition. But, Madras Court put a stay on hanging and in 2014 SC quashed death penalty on grounds of “inordinate delays “ on behalf of UPA led Centre government in hearing pleas.

These killers would have been long dead if mercy petitions were not entertained. Now, to release all of them should be seen as just letting them go. Many convicts in India, are waiting for their turn to just start their trial. Here, not once but multiple times mercy petitions are heard, discussed and accepted. It seems that the Congress party has kept alive Rajiv Gandhi‘s assassination case till the times, electoral gains were in offing. Once, you have reaped benefits, it’s time to project self as an archetype of compassion and an ardent apostle of peace.

Irony must have wept in silence when Rahul Gandhi’s Congress formed an alliance with DMK in Tamil Nadu. Rajiv Gandhi had accused DMK and its supremo Karunanidhi to be in liaison with LTTE chief. In fact, many reports say that Karunanidhi along with his ally Vaiko(Who left DMK in 1993) used to communicate with Prabhakaran. Vaiko had even visited LTTE camps in Northern Sri Lanka, allegedly back-stabbed Karunanidhi by asking Prabhakaran to help him succeed the DMK after annulling Karunanidhi.

Vaiko with Prabhakaran

Karunanidhi never regarded Prabhakaran as a terrorist and even called him his ‘good friend’, in 2009. The SJP(R) government had even dismissed DMK government after 1989 Tamil Nadu state elections. The Chandra Shekhar led government, which was on outside support from Congress(I), had cited degradation of state law and collusion between outlawed LTTE and DMK as grounds for dismissal.

From time-to-time when Congress party was in alliance with Jayalalitha led AIADMK, called DMK and Karunanidhi as ‘anti-national’. A term now Congress says is used by BJP to stifle voices of dissent. You can expect NGOs and placard activists to go gaga over convicts release. They have been instrumental in helping convicts with their mercy petitions. They will be called upon the podium and asked to narrate tales of the imaginary ordeal they had to go through. How predictive, isn’t it?

Release of these perpetrators sets a very dangerous precedent when it comes to national security. A squad coming from foreign land and with aid of local like-minded people, executes an assassin plot and are freed after a certain time! That is not something any nation should allow.

The BJP led central government is opposing the mercy petition in Supreme Court. It said that it will have ‘international ramifications’. The BJP government is trying hard not to let the convicts go free. President Kovind had in June rejected the TN government’s proposal to release the convicts. But Rajiv Gandhi’s own party seems to be least bothered. This whole scenario translates just to one thing that, you can assassinate a PM and still be heard and freed after some time. National security, our sovereignty just seem to be hollow words in Indian political lexicon.

Politicians keep changing their stance from time to time for petty political gains. In politics, words and relations just stop making sense. But when national security and the international perception of sovereignty is at stake, petty political goals need to be kept aside.

There is still time, we can send a strong message to the world. We won’t ever tolerate a foreign organization or a country giving orders to us on how to be and what to do, that sending assassins or using violence to thwart our democratic institutions, shall not be taken lightly. It needs to be seen, how the governor responds to the pleas, but let us not be very surprised of all perpetrators are released from jail and Congress uses this for their political propaganda.

Triple Talaq victim falls prey to acid attack in Bulandshahar

0

Shabnam Rani, a victim of Triple Talaq who has been fighting for the rights of Muslim women in court, has fallen victim to an acid attack by bike-borne assailants on Thursday in Bulandshahar, Uttar Pradesh. The attack is believed to have been committed by her brother-in-law with help from his friends.

As per reports, Shabnam, who hails from Delhi, was married eight years ago to a man named Mujammil from Joligarh which falls under Agauta Police station in Bulandshahar. Some times ago, her husband had divorced her through Triple Talaq, and later was trying to force her to perform the ritual of Nikah Halala with his brother, so that he can remarry her as per sharia laws. Shabdam had filed a petition at the Supreme Court urging that Nikah Halala and Polygamy should be criminalised.

As per reports, Shabnam was assaulted by her in-laws on Wednesday night. On Thursday morning, she was traveling to meet the SSP to register a complaint about the assault she suffered the previous night during which she was attacked with acid. She has been admitted to the district hospital and her situation is said to be critical.

Atrocities against victims of Triple Talaq are more common than we would like to believe. In July, Raziya, a Triple Talaq victim, was allegedly beaten and starved by her husband and eventually died during treatment. In another incident, few years after a woman was forced to go through halala with her father-in-law was again forced to go through halala with her brother-in-law.

Nikah-halala is a practice of a divorced woman having to consummate the marriage with another man and then getting a divorce from him to be eligible to marry her previous husband.

After Supreme Court of India had outlawed Tripple Talaq, Muslim women are petitioning the apex court to outlaw Nikah Halala and polygamy too. And such women are being attacked and threatened for their bravery. In June this year, another women who has approached the top court with similar petition, Sameena Begum had informed that she was receiving rape and death threats for her petition and for her work as a activist for rights of Muslim women.

Watch: DMK leader entered a beauty parlour, assaulted a woman

0

In a shocking incident captured in a CCTV camera, DMK leader is seen kicking a woman, while other three women are seen trying to stop him from hitting. According to ANI, the man in the footage is identified as DMK leader and former DMK Corporator Selvakumar.

In the video which is from 25th May, 2018, it can be seen that the DMK leader is resorting to violence against a woman working at a beauty salon in Tamil Nadu’s Perambalur. Selvakumar can be seen speaking to a woman inside a parlour and suddenly starts brutally thrashing and kicking her, while the other three can be seen pleading to save the woman. Selvakumar then went on to put his hand around the victim’s neck and pushed her to the floor and continued to kick her.

DMK has now suspended the former corporator for physically assaulting a woman and released a press note and said, “The party suspends him from basic membership and all party posts due to actions that go beyond the code of conduct of the party and for defaming the party.”

News agency IANS uses expletive to describe PM Modi, suspends journalist

The Indo-Asian News Service (IANS) published a story about a new scheme approved by the Cabinet of Ministers chaired by the Prime Minister himself in which the word ‘Bakhch*d’ was used as Narendra Modi’s middle name. The story started doing the rounds after Nishant Saxena, a correspondent for exchange4media, raised the issue on Twitter.

Saxena’s claim was corroborated by Republic TV journalist Nalini Sharma as well. The news has now been picked up by several other media outlets.

Saxena further stated that after some time a news advisory was issued by the agency which read, “IANS is withdrawing a story “Cabinet approves scheme on remunerative crop prices” which moved at 1756 hours. It contains inaccuracies. Please guard against its publication. A substitute version has moved at 1844 hours.”

Edited version of IANS story

The reporter in whose name the story was published was suspended with immediate effect and the concerned editor has been issued a show-cause notice. IANS has stated that an investigation has been launched into the matter.

Meanwhile, there are fears that more people could lose their jobs over the fiasco. The webcache of the original story can still be accessed here.

Congress distances itself from Tehseen Poonawalla’s PIL in Supreme Court over Rafale deal

0

The Congress party, which has been going against the Modi government with all guns blazing over the Rafale deal, has curiously distanced itself from its own most vocal supporter and former media cell leader Tehseen Poonawalla, who is a close relative of Robert Vadra.

In a press release by Anoop George Chaudhary from the AICC legal cell, the Supreme Court unit of the AICC has clarified that they have nothing to do with the PIL filed by Poonawalla over the Rafale issue. The press release states that Poonawalla’s PIL seeks for the disclosure of the renegotiated price of the Rafale deal and the party explicitly denied any involvement in the PIL as it has been filed on Poonawalla’s individual capacity.

The press release goes further to insist that the Congress party does not have even the ‘remotest’ connection with the PIL or Poonawalla and the party thinks that the apex court is not the forum for raising such issues. The letter concludes by reasserting that the party in no way can be linked to Poonawalla or his PIL.

It is notable here that Tehseen Poonawalla, who is a vocal supporter of the Congress party and the brother-in-law of Robert Vadra, had filed a PIL in the SC seeking the disclosure of the renegotiated Rafale deal in March 2018. While the Congress party has been incessantly attacking the government over the deal alleging that corruption has taken place and the deal was done to benefit Anil Ambani’s firm, the abrupt announcement of distancing itself from Poonawalla’s PIL is being questioned by many on social media. People have questioned whether the party is distancing itself because its own hidden dealings while negotiating the old Rafale deal will tumble out details are brought out.

Another PIL filed by advocate ML Sharma over the Rafale deal is slated for a hearing this week. The PIL seeks a SIT probe into the Rafale deal signed between Indian and French governments.

Rahul Gandhi accuses Arun Jaitley of having ‘struck a deal’ with Mallya, demands resignation

0

Congress President Rahul Gandhi, in a press conference on Thursday, has accused Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley of having ‘struck a deal’ with the fugitive tycoon Vijay Mallya, to help him flee India. He alleged that there was a ‘clear-cut case of collusion’ between absconder Vijay Mallya and Jaitley and demanded that the latter resign and face an investigation.

Rahul Gandhi has also claimed that Arun Jaitley was informed by Mallya about ‘fleeing the country’ and questioned why was the CBI or ED informed.

It is pertinent to mention that Arun Jaitley, in a statement on social media, has stated that Vijay Mallya’s claim that he met him and offered him a settlement is false. He said, “The statement of Vijay Mallaya that he met me & offered settlement is factually false in as much as it does not reflect truth. Since 2014, I have never given him any appointment to meet me and the question of his having met me does not arise.”

Arun Jaitley did admit that Vijay Mallya abused his privilege as a Rajya Sabha member and approached him. However, he replied, “there was no point talking to me and he must make offers to his bankers.” But he reiterated that he had never given an appointment to Vijay Mallya.

We have reported that Vijay Mallya has stated that he has made ‘a comprehensive settlement’ offer before the Karnataka High Court and hoped that the judges would consider it favourably. However, he gave no details of this settlement offer.

Over 3,600 children abused by Vatican clergymen between 1946 and 2014 in Germany, claims study

0

As per a leaked study which was due to be released on the 25th of September, commissioned by the Church itself and conducted by the Universities of Giessen, Heidelberg and Mannheim, Roman Catholic priests abused more than 3600 children in Germany between 1946 and 2014. According to German outlet Spiegel Online, 1670 clergymen have reportedly committed sexual attacks on 3677 children. As per the study, most of the victims were boys and one out of every six cases of abuse involved rape.

“We are aware of the extent of the sexual abuse that is supported by the results of the study,” Bishop Stephan Ackermann of Trier said. “It is depressing and shameful.” According to Christian Pfeiffer, a criminologist, the findings although shocking underestimate the real extent of the menace. “The report does not give the full picture, and is not fully independent,” he said.

Ackermann said in a written statement to CNN that the objective of the study was to “gain more clarity and transparency about this dark side of our church, for the sake of those affected, but also to see for ourselves the wrongdoings and to ensure this cannot be repeated.” The statement continued: ”It is about a responsible and professional investigation. I am convinced that the study is a comprehensive and thorough survey that provides figures and analysis from which we will continue to learn. This also applies to the findings, which provide a deeper insight into the perpetrators’ actions and the behaviour of church leaders in recent decades. Again, I emphasize: The study is a measure that we owe not only to the Church, but above all, and first and foremost, to those affected.”

The conclusions of the researchers portray a familiar pattern of events. They asserted that some files were manipulated or destroyed, no justice was delivered in many cases, and that on several occasions, the accused was simply transferred to another diocese without informing the congregation of his sordid past.

Meanwhile, Pope Francis has summoned senior Catholic Bishops from around the world to discuss measures to protect minors from clerical sexual abuse. However, we would like to remind our readers, the Pope himself is accused of being aware of the sexual transgressions of a senior Church official and yet elevating him to higher positions of power.

The Vatican has a long history of child sexual abuse by its clergymen. More recently, it has suffered a severe crackdown by the authorities in Chile in connection with allegations of child abuse. It was also revealed recently that the Catholic Church covered up sexual abuse by more than 300 priests in Pennsylvania.

In India, as well, we are witnessing currently the systemic cultural problem within the Church that allows priests to get away with sex crimes without any consequences. Recently in Kerala, after a nun had accused Bishop rape, the Church body came out in support of the accused calling him an “innocent soul” and even attempted to slander the alleged rape victim.

Watch: Surrendered Naxal Pahad Singh says arrested ‘activist’ was present at high ranking meeting of CPI Maoists

A massive crackdown has been underway on supposed Naxal sympathizers in connection with the violence at Bhima Koregaon last year and an assassination plot to murder Prime Minister Modi. The residences of prominent ‘Civil Rights Activists’ were raided and they have been put on house arrest. The crackdown sparked a raging debate with a section of the media and the ‘Civil Society’ slamming the Modi government for being a fascist regime by cracking down on these do-gooders for merely exercising their freedom of speech.

The ones raided and put on house arrest were Gautam Navlakha, Varavara Rao, Sudha Bhardwaj, Arun Ferreira, Father Stam Swamy, Anand Teltumbde and Vernon Gonsalves. Many media houses, as well as the usual ‘intellectuals’, branded the ones arrested as people fighting for Adivasi rights.

Recently, owing to the government’s robust surrender policy, many Naxals and Maoists have surrendered to the police. Last month, Pahad Singh, a senior Naxal commander who had the police forces of three states in hot pursuit surrendered to the Chattisgarh police. Pahad Singh, 48, had spent 18 years as a part of the Maoist movement. On August 24th 2018, Singh, disillusioned with the cause, gave up arms and surrendered. He had a cumulative bounty of Rs 47 lac on his head by Maharashtra, Chattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh.

In 2017, intelligence agencies warned of a fresh reprisal warning that Maoists were expanding their base beyond their usual bastion of Chhattisgarh’s Bastar district to the tri-junction of Madhya Pradesh-Maharashtra-Chhattisgarh (MMC) in order to support their existing strongholds in Sukma and Dantewada districts. Pahad Singh was one of the four people who was entrusted with the responsibility of developing MMC as the Naxal bastion before he surrendered recently.

OpIndia.com conducted a two-hour long exclusive interview with Pahad Singh, who is now under police protection, at an undisclosed location. The startling revelations made by Pahad Singh bring a fresh perspective not only to the Maoist ideology and their working but also the role of “urban Naxals” that many would want to be pushed under the rug.

In the course of the interview, Pahad Singh was shown the picture of the banners that had surfaced recently at Perimili near Gadchiroli, put up by the Naxals, which appealed to the masses to condemn the arrest the ‘Urban Naxals’ for their alleged role in Bhima-Koregaon violence. The Naxals had demanded the immediate and unconditional release of their fellow comrades. The Reds have also urged the masses to condemn the BJP-RSS government for labelling the activists as ‘Maoists’ to deprive them of their rights.

OpIndia asked Pahad Singh whether these posters would have been put up by the ground cadre or the higher echelons of the CPI (Maoist). Upon seeing the poster, Pahad Singh emphatically said that “as soon as the ‘intellectuals’ would have got news of the arrest, they would have started their propaganda because it is not like such people are not a part of the Maoists”.

It is worthy to note, that at this point, none of the names of the ‘activists’ who had been raided and arrested was mentioned to Pahad Singh by the interviewer.

Pahad Singh then proceeded to say, “I know some of the people who have been arrested recently”.

Upon being asked who he recognised, Pahad Singh said “I know Arun Ferreira, he had come in 2006. I challenge all these ‘intellectuals’ who say they fight for Adivasi Asmita. This armed struggle won’t change the country, it will only claim the lives of innocent Adivasis”. He then asserted that in 2006, Arun Ferreira had attended a division meeting and Pahad Singh had himself met him. It was in this meeting that Pahad Singh was made the secretary of two areas. He also said that at the same meeting, CCM Shekhar and Vijay were also present.

CCMs as Central Committee Members. The Central Committee of the CPI (Maoist) takes command from the Politburo and passes on the information to its members. It is like the central management of the operations deep in the jungle. When Pahad Singh said Central Committee Member Shekhar and Vijay were present, he meant Palendu Shekhar Mukherjee and Vijay Kumar Arya.

Pahad Singh also said that many such people come to these meetings and instigate the Adivasis. He alleged that Ferreira was a part of the ‘Rajya committee’. He followed his comments by saying that he was arrested in 2007 and after he was let off, he had continued to say what he has to with impunity.

Arun Ferreira is no stranger to prison as well. He had spent 4 and a half years in Nagpur prison before being granted bail by the District and Sessions court of Gadchiroli in Maharashtra and was eventually acquitted of all charges in 2014.

He was arrested under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) on charges of sedition. He became a poster boy for the media which portrayed him as a victim of the villainous state.

Highlights of the full interview of Pahad Singh will be published soon on OpIndia.com.

“Are Rahul Gandhi and Mallya working in tandem?” asks RS Prasad on Mallya’s allegations

0

Defending Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, union minister RS Prasad today questioned Rahul Gandhi and asked whether he is working with the fugitive tycoon Vijay Mallya since Mallya’s remarks saying he had met the finance minister before leaving for the UK came weeks after Congress President’s UK visit.

He said that the fact that Mallya met Jaitley in the Parliament, using his privilege as a Rajya Sabha member, and making an offer of settlement to Jaitley duly dismissed by the latter, was being made into an issue by the Congress. He added that Mallya’s statement comes weeks after Rahul Gandhi’s visit to the UK. Does that mean Mallya and Rahul Gandhi working in tandem?

He added that the Congress is upset with the present government as it is trying to bring transparency in the banking system.

Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, too, came out to defend Jaitley and said that Mallya took undue advantage of the finance minister’s presence in Parliament.

He further added that those who were the beneficiaries of Mallya’s parties and be his guests abroad are now attacking the finance minister.

The Opposition parties had latched on to Mallya’s statement that he had met the FM before leaving for the UK, but a clarification from FM office followed soon saying that the said meeting was in the corridor of the Parliament where Mallya took advantage of his parliamentary privilege as Rajya Sabha member. Jaitley denied any official meeting regarding settlement having taken place. Later, even Mallya clarified that he had met many of his colleagues in the Parliament, not just the FM and had no formal meeting with the FM.
