Rahul Gandhi uses Kerala Floods to to make irrelevant claims

0

Kerala is facing its most devastating flood situation in almost a century. Hundreds of people have lost their lives and thousands have been displaced. The central and state government have been mobilising all possible resources towards relief and rescue operations. But there are many who have indulged in petty politics even in the times of calamity.

While there was a certain section of liberals trying to misrepresent facts and paint the tragedy in colours of regionalism for political agenda, Congress President Rahul Gandhi too, seems to have decided to focus less on the calamity and more on making demands to the PM that are not only irrelevant but an attempt to shift focus from the intense relief operations and create a controversy.

Rahul Gandhi has shared tweets in which he is repeatedly urging the PM to declare the flood in Kerala a ‘national disaster’.

Rahul Gandhi’s Tweet

The first tweet posted yesterday hints at the idea that by not declaring the Kerala floods as a national disaster, the PM is putting thousands of lives and livelihoods at stake. The second Tweet, shared hours later, acknowledges the 500 crores PM Modi allocated for Kerala but again hints that it is not enough and the only way to help the people of Kerala will be to declare the Kerala floods as ‘national disaster’.

Rahul’s claim was busted by Times Of India Editor Bharti Jain. Jain clarified that proclaiming a calamity ‘national disaster’ was relevant when the National Calamity Contingency Fund was in place and there is no provision under the Disaster Management Act to declare a natural calamity as ‘national disaster’. Thus making it clear that the declaration is irrelevant as the centre and state are already providing all possible help.

It is notable here that the Disaster Management Act of 2005 extends to the whole of India. The State Disaster Management Authorities and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been established under the act to provide services in all states. The National Disaster Management Authority has the PM as its chairperson and the executive committee has the representations of all relevant union ministries like defence, home, health, finance, drinking water and sanitation which have already their resources engaged in Kerala floods.

As the funds under the erstwhile National Calamity Contingency Fund have been merged with the National Disaster Management Fund as per the 13th finance commission it effectively means that every major calamity gets all possible help from the centre and there is no relevance of declaring a ‘national disaster’ anymore.

Rahul’s claim was also criticised by many on social media where users recalled the Uttarakhand floods and blamed Rahul for delaying relief material so he could have ‘photo ops’.

The Indian armed forces have been carrying out intense relief work in Kerala and the ‘Operation Madad’ launched by all forces together has already entered its 11th day. On 17th August, the Army, Navy, Airforce, coast guard and NDRF were ordered to mobilise all their additional resources to Kerala to help citizens.

Social Media reacts to Congress leader Navjot Sidhu attending Pakistan PM’s oath taking ceremony

0

Former cricketer Imran Khan took oath as Pakistan’s Prime Minister today. Though many Indians were invited to his oath-taking ceremony, former cricketer and Congress minister of tourism and cultural affairs in Punjab, Navjot Singh Sidhu was the only one to attend. Former cricketers like Kapil Dev and Suni Gavaskar had declined to attend the ceremony. Sidhu’s decision to attend the ceremony was widely criticised in social media. BJP leader Subramanian Swamy had even stated that if Sidhu has mental stability he should not go to Pakistan.

However, Sidhu had travelled to Pakistan via the Attari-Wagah border yesterday and attended Imran Khan’s oath-taking ceremony there today. Sidhu’s attendance there has been heavily criticised on Indian social media.

During the ceremony, Sidhu was sitting next to the President of Pakistan Occupied Kashmir, Masood Khan.

Not only did Sidhu seemingly gladly sat beside the President of PoK, he even stood up to embrace Pakistan’s Army Chief General Qamar Bajwa, who is known for his frequent vocal attacks against India and is responsible for the deaths of many Indian soldiers and civilians in frequent ceasefire violations carried out by the Pakistan Army.

The Congress party had stated earlier that going to Pakistan is a personal decision for Sidhu.

As social and mainstream media is rife with criticisms of Sidhu hugging the Pakistan Army Chief, some have hoped that Congress President Rahul Gandhi will at least condemn the act.

It is notable here that Imran Khan has been a terror apologist and had been sympathetic to the Taliban in the past. As Pakistan has been known to help spread terrorism in India and kills hundreds of Indians every year, Sidhu’s visit to attend the new PM’s oath ceremony and going out of his way to hug the army chief responsible for deaths of hundreds of Indians is generating strong criticism among Indian people.

As the nation unites to help Kerala, some people attempt to use the tragedy for political agenda

0

Kerala has been struggling with incessant rains that has triggered one of the worst floods in the state in decades. In such times of crisis, the Central and the state government have been working closely together along with many volunteer organizations to provide relief to the affected populace and conduct rescue operations.

People from all sections of the society have come together to help each other out in this moment of great adversity. On 17th August, the armed forces were ordered to mobilise all their additional resources for rescue and relief work in Kerala. However, certain people are using the disaster to further their own political agenda.

There have been many news reports of the PM being in touch with Kerala CM to discuss the issue and Raksha Mantri Nirmala Sitharaman has been providing regular updates of the armed forces deployment and relief work undertaken. Still, there were negative opinions being spread by many handles, attempting to ignore the efforts and use the tragedy to gain political mileage.

Certain accounts on social media were seen not only peddling regionalist sentiments but also choosing to ignore the intense relief operations being carried out by central government agencies. PM Narendra Modi had left for Kerala soon after attending ex-PM Vajpayee’s cremation rituals at Delhi on 17th August to take stock of the flood situation.

The fact that the Operation Madad launched by Indian armed forces has been going on for more than a week was also ignored by many people.

Despite the agenda driven tweets of certain handles, the state government of Kerala and the Central government have been working closely together for those affected by the devastating flood. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan expressed his gratitude on social media for the Rs. 500 crore assistance announced by the Prime Minister after a meeting between the two.

The Indian Railways has been providing assistance to Kerala as well.

The Indian Army, Navy, Airforce, NDRF and Coast Guard have all been mobilized to conduct rescue operation in Kerala. Apart from the central and state governments, various individuals have been working in their private capacity to assist those affected by the flood. Various donation campaigns are being run to provide much-needed assistance to the affected public.

Meet Dr VR Lalithambika, the woman who will head ISRO’s Gaganyan project

0

On 15th August 2018, India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced from the ramparts of the Red Fort that India will send an Indian astronaut into space by 2022. For many Indians, this might have come as a surprise but not for the scientists at ISRO. For them, it was only a definitive timeline set for a project on which they have been working on for the last 15 years.

With the PM’s announcement, the national attention was drawn towards India’s simple, unassuming but robust space research organisation ISRO. India’s space missions so far have a high success rate. In fact, a 100% success rate. While space technology giants like Russia, USA, China etc have many failed missions, ISRO’s missions Chandrayan and Mangalyan were successful and were accomplished at a much lesser expense than similar missions of other nations. With Mangalyan launch in 2014, India became the first nation in the world to send a Mars Orbiter in its first attempt. But a manned space mission is very different and much more complicated. In fact, ISRO has been quietly working on it since 2004.

ISRO chairman K Sivan stated soon after PM’s announcement that what the PM said is highly doable and ISRO has been working on it. In fact, most of the essential technologies and hardware are developed, demonstrated and tested already. Technologies, such as the Human Crew module system, environmental control inside the spacecraft and life support system have already been developed. The task before ISRO is now to collaborate the technologies and take it into a full-scale live project mode. With the announcement of the ‘Gaganyan’ as the 2022 Human Space Flight Project is named, came another news to rejoice for Indians. The ISRO Human Space Flight Project will be headed by a woman, Dr VR Lalithambika, currently the Deputy Director of the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSCC).

Dr VR Lalithambika is a specialist of Advanced Launcher Technologies. She had joined VSCC in 1988 and has been in charge of control, guidance and simulation research work. In layman terms, it is her job to make rockets fly. Dr Lalithambika heads the team that optimises fuel systems, autopilot systems, designs the rocket computers and rocket hardware.

One of the biggest challenges of the space missions has been the design and the development of the ideal launch vehicle. India’s PSLV (Polar Satelite Launch Vehicle) was the one that carried Chandrayan and Mangalyan into space. But sending astronauts required the rocket to carry a much heavier payload and that has pushed ISRO into developing the GSLV Mk III. ISRO successfully tested the GSLV Mk III in 2014 in an experimental flight. It was later renamed as LVM-3 and ISRO successfully sent the GSAT-19 satellite into space with it in June 2017. It is Dr VR Lalithambika whose efforts have been crucial in the development of LVM-3. She was the one who had designed the Digital Auto Pilot (DAP) system that controls the GSLV MkIII. She has also worked on the Reusable Launch Vehicles or RLV. Last year, when ISRO successfully launched 104 satellites into space in a single flight of PSLV, Dr Lalithambika and her team were behind the helm too.

Dr Lalithambika is the recipient of many awards. According to a report in Deccan Chronicle, she had bagged the Space Gold Medal, 2001, ISRO individual merit award, and ISRO performance excellence award in 2013. Her research papers on propulsion technologies and control systems are frequently hailed by researchers in the field. In that article, she had stated, ” It is extremely satisfactory to work in ISRO because everyone here is allowed to voice their opinion, be it a junior or senior. Each of our missions is an example of successful execution of teamwork.”

ISRO has a rich history of many women scientists who have contributed to India’s stellar space research system. The success of the GSLV MkIII had, along with Dr Lalithambika, other scientists like Dr DS Sheela as the group Director, V Brinda as head of Control Design Division, and Structural Designer AP Beena. Women scientists like System Engineer Minal Sampath, Dr Anuradha TK, Dr Nandini Harinath, who was the Deputy Operations Director for the Mars Orbiter Mission, N Valarmathi, the project director of RISAT-1 and many, many more.

ISRO has a stellar track record when it comes to space programs. The mission, which has an estimated budget of Rs 10,000 crores, has already designed spacesuits, have tested for Atmospheric re-entry and pad-abort operations. While the entire country is hopeful of watching former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s dream come true, the fiercely talented women handling the crucial responsibilities at the mission are giving hopes to millions of girls in India that they can, literally, touch the skies.

As Kerala flood situation worsens, Indian armed forces save thousands of lives

0

Floods have been wrecking havoc in Kerala and as the situation worsens amidst torrential rains and overflowing water bodies, Indian armed forces have been deployed to carry out rescue and assistance operations. The National Crisis Management Committee met today for the second time in two days to review the rescue operations. The government today has decided that additional resources of all agencies, including the Army, Navy, Airforce, Coast Guard and NDRF have been mobilised to carry out rescue and assistance in flood-hit areas of Kerala.

Operation Madad has been launched by the Indian Armed Forces to provide help in Kerala. Yesterday, the Southern Naval Command had halted all its training ops to extend help in Kerala floods.

The Indian Army has deployed 10 flood relief columns, with 65 personnel in each column for rescue operations. The Army is also assisting in providing transport, food and has deployed personnel to restore connectivity by repairing roads and bridges that have been damaged in the state.

Yesterday, the Indian Navy’s Southern Naval Command deployed 21 diving and rescue teams with 21 Gemini boats for rescue operations in the state. The naval teams are also working with the civic administrations of several districts to help in distribution of relief material, transportation and rescue efforts. As of today, the Navy has reportedly moved all its additional resources and its aircraft hangar at INS Kochi has been turned into a relief camp.

With massive landslides being reported from the state, the death toll has reached 167. Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan has appealed to PM Modi for additional help which has already been sent and the PM is scheduled to visit the state today to take a review of the situation.

Amidst the disastrous situations in the state, news of valiant rescue operations have been pouring in and the expertise and care with which the armed forces are handling the grave situation are being praised in mainstream and social media. Earlier today, a heavily pregnant woman in the initial stages of labour was airlifted by Navy’s rescue team. Within an hour of being rescued the woman gave birth to a baby boy under the care of Naval doctors.

Many areas of Kerala are still cut off. Airports and highways have been flooded due to which transport has taken a hit. Till yesterday, all 14 districts of the coastal state were under red alert and as per the latest news, red alert for Thiruvananthapuram has been withdrawn.

According to the disaster management authorities in the state, a total of 3393 hectares of area is under floodwater. As per reports, as many as 718 relief camps are currently operational in the state and approximately 85,000 people are residing in those camps.

The curious case of the ‘Hindu Court’

0

A Hindu outfit, Akhil Bharatiya Hindu Mahasabha announced on Wednesday that the group has set up India’s first ‘Hindu court’. The court is set up much like the Sharia courts already running in the country. According to the group, this court will function much like the Sharia courts and just like the Sharia courts which deal exclusively with Muslim affairs, the Hindu court will deal explicitly with Hindu affairs. The court also got its first judge in a ceremony that was held at the party’s office in Meerut.

According to Pandit Ashok Sharma, the national vice-president of the Akhil Bharatiya Hindu Mahasabha, the group has expressed its disapproval of the Sharia courts already functioning in the country. The group earlier in a letter to the government stated the problem of not having uniformity as far law of the land and constitutional norms are concerned. They have also explicitly told the government that if their demands are not met, they will set up a ‘Hindu Court’. That is exactly what they did. Ashok Sharma is also the head of the five-member sangrakshak mandal of the Hindu court.

The idea of a separate court on the basis of religious laws is not new in India as we already have sharia courts and time and time again it has been proven that such intertwining of religious and judicial matters lead to radicalization. The set-up of the ‘Hindu Court’ seems a reactionary response rather than a serious ambition of setting up a parallel judicial structure.

According to the group, they plan to declare their bylaws by 2nd October. They also intend to have their own jails. They intend to appoint five judges throughout the country by 15th November. The court will deal with issues ranging from harassment of Hindu woman to dispute of property or money and the maximum sentence will be the death penalty.

The pattern here is one of ominous nature. If not addressed properly, this issue can pose a greater sense of division within the society as other prominent religions will also try and create their own separate judicial apparatus, which will lead to a state of confusion and pose a serious threat to the constitutional and legal framework of the Indian democracy.

Now this is where it becomes dangerous and preposterous, though in all probabilities, the group will not succeed in any of these aimed actitives. Because if they try and enforce their judgments, it would constitute a legal breach and criminal offense.

On the other hand, if they want to have mock trials much like when the students and teachers at JNU who held a mock trial against their VC or mediocre show Rakhi Ka Insaaf they absolutely can. Such courts have no legal validity and should be called, as a senior administrative official of the JNU termed them – “Kangaroo courts”.

The Wire lies again, this time to malign Vajpayee hours after he died

0

Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee breathed his last on Thursday, 16 August leaving behind a legacy that gave India the much-needed economic boost along with a mini cultural renaissance. And this is the very legacy that makes many people – who funnily call themselves ‘liberals’ – hate him to the core. This hatred couldn’t hide behind phony tributes that many paid after his death.

While the less sophisticated trolls started celebrating death and badmouthing Vajpayee even as he was admitted in the hospital in critical condition, the more sophisticated trolls like Siddharth Varadarajan, founding editor of the leftist propaganda website The Wire, waited for Vajpayee to breathe his last before launching his calumny.

Varadarajan’s website The Wire published a ‘controversial’ speech by Atal Bihari Vajpayee, which he had supposedly delivered on April 12, 2002 in Goa. The title of the article on The Wire started with ‘Wherever Muslims Live…’: indicating that Vajpayee said something that painted Muslims with a broad brush.

The Wire claimed that Vajpayee had said the following during his speech:

“Wherever Muslims live, they don’t like to live in co-existence with others, they don’t like to mingle with others; and instead of propagating their ideas in a peaceful manner, they want to spread their faith by resorting to terror and threats. The world has become alert to this danger.”

Clearly a controversial paragraph that tries to paint every Muslim – not just those influenced by radical Islamist ideology – as violent exclusivists.

But did Vajpayee really paint every Muslim as a potential terrorist?

Truth is that Siddharth Varadarajan has maliciously edited what Vajpayee actually said, to paint Vajpayee a bigot. This malicious edit of Vajpayee’s speech to spread a lie was done back in 2002 itself by likes of Siddharth Varadarajan, who now ironically cry about ‘fake news’.

As a result, immediately in April 2002, the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee had to call out this fake news. In a press release that can still be accessed in PMO (Prime Minister’s Office) archives, Vajpayee had said:

“When I said in my speech that some people ‘tend not to live in co-existence with others, not to mingle with others, and instead of propagating their ideas in a peaceful manner, resort to terror and threats,’ my reference was clearly to followers of militant Islam, and not to ordinary Muslims in general.”

The fact that Vajpayee was talking about followers of militant Islam, is clear from another paragraph from The Wire article itself, which quotes Vajpayee as saying:

“Islam has two facets. One is that which tolerate others, which teaches its adherents to follow the path of truth, which preaches compassion and sensitivity. But these days, militancy in the name of Islam leaves no room for tolerance. It has raised the slogan of Jehad. It is dreaming of recasting the entire world in its mould.”

Therefore, it’s clear that Vajpayee was talking about militant Islam when he talked about intolerance and terror. He acknowledged, in the same speech, that a branch of Islam was tolerant. So how can he then suddenly go on to tar every Muslim with the same brush?

Despite this context and the later clarification by Vajpayee, that maliciously edited paragraph – which was made the headline and declared ‘controversial’ – was recirculated to show that Vajpayee was talking about Muslims in general.

The misleading transcript of the supposedly ‘controversial’ speech by Vajpayee was part of a book titled ‘Gujarat: The Making of a Tragedy’, which has been authored by Siddharth Varadarajan himself – a fact that was not clarified in The Wire article. Perhaps it would have alerted the readers that if Varadarajan has written something, it had to be a lie?

So in essence, Siddharth Varadarajan and The Wire, despite knowing that the paragraph was maliciously edited and did not reflect truly what Vajpayee had said, published the lie hours after Vajpayee’s death.

Atal Bihari Vajpayee is no more to repeat and clarify again that he didn’t stereotype every Muslim as intolerant and violent individual. Lie has been spread, again. By the time this article at OpIndia was published, the lie on The Wire was nearing 4000 shares on social media. Our ‘liberals’ are the greatest followers of Nazi propagandist Joseph Goebbels who had suggested to repeat a lie often enough to make people believe that it was the truth.

This is the second lie being repeated about Vajpayee after his death, despite him having clarified about both of them when he was alive. The so-called journalists are not willing to give even the dead his dignity.

Leaders of the world mourn the death of former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee

0

Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee passed away on Thursday after battling a prolonged illness at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). The news of the unfortunate death has spread across the world and foreign leaders have shared their condolences.

Vajpayee, who has served as Indian PM thrice, was appointed the Minister of External Affairs in Prime Minister Morarji Desai’s cabinet back in 1977. As foreign minister, he became the first Foreign Minister of India to speak at the United Nations in Hindi.

As a global leader, he had admirers all over the world including Pakistan and many global leaders and governments of other countries have condoled the death of one of India’s tallest leaders.

The Mauritius government as a sign of respect has decided that both Indian and Mauritian flag will fly half-mast on government buildings today. The government has also requested all the private sector to fly the flag half-mast to share their respect for Atal Bihari Vajpayee. The Mauritius government in its letter has credited Atal Bihari Vajpayee for taking the relationships between the two countries to new heights. The letter said, “Mauritius mourns the loss of a man who stood tall not only for India but also for Mauritius”.

Apart from this, US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo has said while condoling the death of the former Prime Minister. He said, “On behalf of the people of the United States of America, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the people of India on the recent passing of Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee”.

British High Commissioner to India Dominic Asquith said, “We are saddened by the passing of former PM of India Atal Bihari Vajpayee”. He further said, “We will remember him as one of India’s greatest leaders. Shri Vajpayee was much respected in the UK as a statesman par excellence”.

The Union Jack also flew at half-mast at the British High Commission in New Delhi as a mark of respect to Vajpayee. The US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in a statement condoled death of Vajpayee and hailed his vision which helped promote expanded cooperation.

Former Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai also flew down to India to pay his last respects to Vajpayee as did the King of Bhutan Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck. Foreign Ministers of Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka also arrived to pay their respects. Pakistan’s Prime Minister elect Imran Khan also expressed his grief at Vajpayee’s passing.

The head of the states of the SAARC countries too have expressed their grief and mourned for the death of one of the South Asia’s tallest statesman. It is reported that there would be significant representation of leaders from the SAARC countries. Reportedly, President of Russia, Vladimir Putin sent a message of condolences to President of India Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi on the passing of Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

UK event organisers cancel event hosting Congress President Rahul Gandhi, rescind invite

0

As reported by Times of India, the Conservative Friends of India, a group affiliated to the ruling Conservative Party led by Theresa May, have rescinded their invitation to the Congress President Rahul Gandhi for an event in the British Parliament. The event which was scheduled to take place during Rahul Gandhi’s visit between 24-25 August to the UK has now been officially cancelled.

As per reports, co-chairman of Conservative Friends of India Dr. Rami Ranger had sent out invites for the event which was scheduled to take place on 24th August at Portcullis House, the building that houses the offices of the British MPs. Many prominent businessmen and UK politicians had also been sent invites advertising Rahul’s presence at the event. However, on Thursday it was learned that the event had been canceled.

The longest-serving British Indian MP Keith Vaz has now come forward and sponsored a room somewhere else in the Parliament and Indian Overseas Congress (IOC) has taken over running the event. Their UK spokesperson Gurminder Randhawa confirmed that the Conservative Friends of India have dropped out from hosting the event and IOC has taken over the task of hosting the event. IOC has also blamed the BJP for cancellation of the event. However, Conservative Friends of India has maintained that the group was finding it hard to arrange for a room in Portcullis room as the UK parliament is in recess and the uncertainty about the availability of the venue that has forced the organization to cancel the event.

During his visit to the, Gandhi is expected to meet Indian diaspora, politicians and business leaders. Last year, during Rahul Gandhi’s visit to the US, the media had reported that he would be talking on ‘Artificial Intelligence’, later refuted by Sam Pitroda, while attending an Overseas Congress event in the US.

Update: Sam Pitroda, an aide of Rajiv Gandhi who is now helping Rahul Gandhi, has claimed that Times of India report was misleading. He has claimed that the event has not been cancelled. In a series of tweets, Pitroda has given details of the Rahul Gandhi’s visit to UK that include many interactions. However, as per the information shared by Pitroda, the venue of the major event is not the Parliament and the event is not being hosted by Conservative Friends of India, which is how it was reported to be according to the Times of India. It is not clear if the organisers were changed after the original plan got cancelled or if the original plan was always the same as Pitroda has tweeted now.

Man says he’ll help poor instead of killing goat on Bakri Eid, gets abused

0

One Hussain Nadim, a Sydney based PhD scholar with Pakistani origins, a few days back tweeted how this Bakri Eid, instead of sacrificing a goat, he has installed a water cooler outside his home in Lahore.

He said installing the cooler cost him as much as sacrificing the goat would take. However, his good deed with good intentions didn’t really go down well with fundamentalists. While many people appreciated his gesture, other fundamentalists called him how not killing a goat as a sacrifice, despite doing something for humanity, would still be ‘gunaah’ (sin).

Some even had very useful suggestions on how he could’ve installed cooler next month after he sacrifices goat as ‘farz’ this month for Eid.

And of course, you don’t ‘bend’ the religion as per your convenience.

Of course, he was told not to confuse the ‘farz’ of sacrificing the animal and doing charity for the needy.

And people who themselves may not follow the advices they give are also the ones to dish them out liberally.

And of course, how could you replace Islamic rituals with ‘humanity crap’?

Hussain Nadim is a student at University of Sydney and has been involved with Pakistan’s Ministry of Planning Development Reforms.
