Social Justice willingly sacrificed as ‘Divide and Rule’ gains traction among the Intellectual elite

In the wake of the floods in Kerala, Liberals and Communists have displayed their true intentions as they used a tragedy to further their own political agenda. Just as the Christians organizations have been known to proselytize during relief operations after natural calamities, the liberals in India used the floods in Kerala to further their agenda of diving India along regional lines.

Journalists have started sharing articles which were written earlier to sow the seeds of division within the country by peddling the narrative that Southern India is cheated of its rights by the ‘corrupt and communal bigots in North India’.

Another article that is being peddled is from 2016 which talks about  ‘The United States of South India’. Some people afflicted with hyper-intellect have also suggested that Maharashtra join this band of Southern states too.

People on social media have obviously not taken kindly to this vile attempt to further their hideous agenda in this moment of misery and at a time when the entire country has united to help those affected by the flood in Kerala. However, with due regards for the circumstances, there are a few things that our intellectuals need to be reminded.

Firstly, the sort of grand unity between the southern states that is between by armchair intellectuals exists only in the delusions of their own imagination. In the real word, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu cannot solve the water dispute amicably, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana could not even exist together as a single state and had to be divided and a certain section of Karnataka is demanding their own separate state. Therefore, to paint the entire Southern region of the country as a united block against Northern India is wishful and sinister imagination.

The ‘Breaking India Forces’, as they are called these days after the term was coined by Rajeev Malhotra, desperately wish for the balkanization of the Indian Union. To make their deepest desire come true, they fill the hearts and minds of people with resentment to the point where they are no longer able to think clearly. And the excuse these forces have come up with is that the Southern states receive disproportionately less funds from the Center for the contribution they make through taxes. The News Minute article, however, takes care to mention that the author does not advocate secession but the entirety of the article only fuels resentment between the two regions of the country.

The authors appear to make the argument that it is unfair for the more prosperous South to contribute more towards the development of other regions of India that are not so prosperous. If we accept the logic at face value, then why is it not unfair to Indian citizens across the country to pay for the welfare and rehabilitation of Rohingya refugees who have entered the country illegally, considering it is the same “liberals” who advocate for the settlement of illegals? Carrying the logic forward, the rich might ask why should they pay the government more money direct taxes than the middle class; prosperous families might ask why should they pay for various welfare schemes which are directed towards benefiting the poor and the less fortunate; and so on and so forth. Our intellectuals constantly demonstrate their love for socialism and redistribution of wealth and yet on the occasion when more prosperous southern states pay for the less prosperous other regions of the country, they suddenly begin to find flaws of redistribution. In fact, the Congress was hand in gloves furthering the North-South divide earlier.

The concept of social justice mandates that those more fortunate walk the extra mile so that the less fortunate can have more opportunities to escape the clutches of poverty and illiteracy and various other maladies. It is extremely unfortunate that for liberals, social justice is merely a political gimmick which they are ever willing to abandon for their primary agenda, that is, the disintegration of the Indian union. Interestingly, such propaganda about an imaginary United Southern front against Northern India was never heard when the UPA was in power. It only goes on to show that the ecosystem is more than willing to let India burn if only they could rule over the pieces.

In recent times, there also has been a concerted attempt to portray the Southern states as having a culture fundamentally distinct from Northern India which could not be further from the truth. It is well known that Shri Rama is venerated as much in the South as He is in the North and only a fool who has had his buried in the sand for too long would claim any different.

More fundamentally, the crux of the culture of Southern India is the same that has spawned the vast array of different cultures in Northern India, that is, the ancient Sanatana Dharma. It has also been portrayed that the ‘anti-caste’ movements in Tamil Nadu have largely rectified the downsides of the caste system when nothing could be further from the truth.

Tamil Nadu remains a state that witnesses a high rate of caste-related atrocities committed by dominant OBCs on Dalits and the virulent anti-Brahmin strain of politics that is mainstream in Tamil Nadu is not unknown to any. Southern India is often portrayed as a heaven of some sort and Northern India as hell while the truth is that both regions have their distinct set of problems which they could help each other solve effectively.

It is indeed amusing that liberals and intellectuals who claim that they want Hindus and Muslims to coexist peacefully use every device under the power to foment divisions within the Hindu society. While they urge Hindus to coexist peacefully with Muslims and Christians, as they should and we wish as well, they constantly fuel resentment within Hindus along caste, linguistic and ethnic and regional lines to try to ensure that various sections of the Hindu population never coexist peacefully with each other. Irony is indeed embarrassed when the same people who want peace to prevail between India and Pakistan do everything in their power to ensure that various regions of India are not able to coexist in harmony.

It is quite obvious at this point that the goal of liberals and intellectuals is neither peace nor coexistence nor social justice, their sole agenda is to continue to hold the country hostage for their personal benefits. They wish to perpetuate the British legacy of ‘Divide and Rule’ so that they continue to rule the roost in the corridors of power. And if the seeds of hatred they sow threaten the disintegration of the Indian Union, they would hardly care as they would continue to prosper financially and otherwise.

Police arrest 19 year old Mostaherul Islam, recover huge cache of arms and ammunition

0

A 19-year old student of Kaliachak High School was arrested by Murshidabad District Police near Chander More on Saturday in possession of a huge cache of arms and ammunition, one of the biggest hauls in recent months, while one other person managed to flee.

The Police recovered twelve 7.65 pistols, 24 magazines, eighty-four round 7.65 mm ammo, eight numbers of 8mm pipe gun, sixteen rounds of 8mm ammo from Mostaherul Islam, a student of class 11.

Mukesh, Murshidabad district police superintendent, said, “Mostaherul Islam, 19, used to be a resident of Sherpur-Nimtata village in the Shamserganj area of Murshidabad. But now he stays in the Sultanganj College more area of Kaliachak. He studies in class 11 at Kaliachak High School.”

He added, “In recent months, police have seized a huge quantity of arms and ammunition from Shamserganj and Farakka areas. Some people were arrested during these raids. During interrogation, they mentioned Mostaherul. We started monitoring his activities.”

The Superintendent of Police also said that Mostaherul was the carrier while the person that managed to flee was the main culprit. The arrested student will be produced before the Court with the intent of securing 14 days Police remand.

Twitter CEO Jack ‘fully admits’ left-leaning bias of its employees

0

Facing accusations of discriminating against conservatives on the social media platform, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey in an interview to CNN has admitted that most of the employees of Twitter have a left leaning bias, but insisted their company only polices behavior, not the content, on the social networking platform. Twitter has been accused of ‘shadow banning’ conservative users. Shadow banning means the content of the user is blocked from the site, but it is not readily apparent to the user that his content is being blocked.

Dorsey said that he and his team is working extensively to weed out ‘some of the harassment and hate speech that has generated bad headlines’. However, he could not offer a timetable for certain changes in the website. He also said how the company is rethinking how follower counts and ‘likes’ on posts are displayed since the race to get more likes and followers at times leads to ‘outrageous behaviour’.

Dorsey also said how his team is trying to tackle the fake, bots and suspicious accounts and that his company is committed to having a ‘conversational health’, the quality of an exchange on Twitter. Recently, Twitter had purged fake accounts and bots and had even said that the company would suspend accounts that have been locked for suspicious behaviour.

Twitter has been under fire recently after it showed bias against right leaning accounts. Last year in November, Twitter ‘paused’ general verification of profiles and also ‘de-verified’ already verified profiles where Twitter users behaviour was not falling within the ‘new guidelines‘. One of the initial casualties of this this de-verification are Right Wing activists like Tommy Robinson, co-founder and former spokesperson of the English Defence League (EDL), a ‘street protest’ and British Nationalist movement. He left EDL in 2013 and in 2016 he set up Pegida UK, an anti-Islam organisation named after German nationalist party Pegida.

Twitter India users, especially the ones who are vocally right wing, have also been targeted. During the end of 2016, reports had started to emerge that predominantly Right Wing accounts in India were soon getting suspended after criticising the Aam Aadmi Party.

This was also noted a few months after the aforementioned report, when a popular Right Wing user was suspended allegedly for questioning Kejriwal and anti-nationals. Things became slightly more brazen when it was seen that, a total of 7 ABVP accounts were suspended by Twitter. They were reinstated only after a heavy protest.

Twitter’s arbitary policy which led to suspension of accounts of right wing Twitter users on social media has also been questioned. In March this year, Twitter started asking its users to delete their tweets which included the phrase ‘kill me’, failing which, their accounts were suspended.

Amidst all this, Twitter is constantly struggling to maintaining the balance between freedom of speech and censorship. Meanwhile, in the US, Dorsey is expected to testify next month before the Senate Intelligence Committee on the issue of Russia’s election interference, and faces a possible subpoena from the House Energy and Commerce Committee over allegations of discrimination against conservatives on the platform.

West Bengal school book using Farhan Akhtar’s image as that of Milkha Singh leaves Twitter shocked

0

The famous actor, producer Farhan Akhtar, today took to Twitter to point out an apparent error made in a West Bengal school textbook which left many on the social networking site in splits of laughter, while few others reacted strongly to the careless error.

According to an image tweeted by Twitter user Lyfe Ghosh, a school textbook in West Bengal has used the image of Farhan Akhtar instead of the sports legend Milkha Singh. Akhtar, who portrayed the role of the Indian athlete in his biopic Bhaag Milkha Bhaag retweeted the image calling it a ‘glaring error’ urged the West Bengal Education Ministry to recall and replace the book.

This mistake has, however, not been well received by the Twitter users, leaving most of them shocked. Some are calling it a glaring mistake while others a dark comedy.

Some even expressed gratitude to the West Bengal authorities for sparing Nick Jonas the horror of seeing Priyanka Chopra’s image depicted as boxer Mary Kom.

Amongst all this Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha MP and former Bourvita Quiz Master, Derek O Brien, who has been known for outrightly bashing anyone and everyone for not adhering to his views on Twitter, was quick to respond to Farhan’s’ Tweet, thankfully sparing him from finding his name mentioned in the parliament as an abusive troll for merely expressing his point of view.

Twitterati, amidst all this, still awaits for West Bengal Chief Minister, Mamta Banerjee, to react to this ‘glaring error’.

Punjab CM Amarinder Singh slams Navjot Sidhu for hugging Pakistan Army chief

0

A day after former cricketer and Punjab minister Navjot Singh Sidhu attended Imran Khan’s oath-taking ceremony, criticism over his actions continues to flow. While the Congress party as a whole have been defending Sidhu’s actions as ‘personal decision’, senior Congress leader and Punjab CM Captain Amarinder Singh has today come hard against Sidhu and stated that it was wrong for him to show such affection towards the Pakistan army chief while so many Indians soldiers are losing their lives.

CM Amarinder Singh states that while he does not want to comment on Sidhu’s personal decision to attend Khan’s oath-taking ceremony, hugging General Bajwa was completely wrong. He further added that almost every day some Indian soldiers are killed and regardless of who pulls the trigger, General Bajwa is responsible for it. CM Singh, a veteran himself, further added that his own regiment had lost a major and two soldiers a few months ago due to Pakistan.

Sidhu had earlier stated that he was a guest of honour and he had to sit where he was asked to sit. On hugging General Bajwa, he stated that he hugged him because General told him that they belong to the same culture and informed him that they have decided to open the Kartarpur border for Prakash Parv.

Yesterday, Sidhu was seen sitting beside the President of Pakistan occupied Kashmir. He was also caught hugging the Pakistan Army chief and for this, he was heavily criticised in Indian mainstream and social media. The BJP had stated that Sidhu hugging the man responsible for the death of hundreds of Indians is no less than a crime.

Indian Commercial Pilot Association writes to PM, offers to fly planes for kerala flood relief work without payment

0

Kerala has been hit by the worst flood in a hundred years and the central and state governments have been busy in relentless rescue and relief operations. The Indian Commercial Pilots’ Association (ICPA) on Saturday, reportedly came forward and offered help by writing to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, expressing its willingness to fly planes to Kerala on a ‘voluntary basis’ in the larger interest of the affected people in the state.

The association in their letter stated that “We are willing to fly the planes without payment on a voluntary basis to the cause of these operations. We consider this a unique privilege that we can use to assist in such operations.”

The letter which came a day after the pilots threatened to stop operations if their flying allowance dues were not paid immediately, further stated,“We have full faith that Sir you will surely turn your attention to the plight of Air India and Air Indians once calm is restored.”

While in this situation of extreme disaster, there has been a certain section of liberals trying to misrepresent facts and paint the tragedy in various colours of regionalism to suit their political agenda, with, of course, the Congress President Rahul Gandhi heading the list, it is rather overwhelming that the Air India pilots have kept their no-flying-allowance-no-flying stir on hold and offered the government their full support.

“ICPA pilots on the Airbus 320 and Boeing 787 in Air India are ready and committed to the cause of Operation Madad and Operation Sahyog. We will support the government and the PMO in the endeavour to help our fellow citizens in Kerala,” the letter said. The letter also reportedly adds that the pilots are willing to put themselves at the country’s command and will work in operating extra flights be it ferrying passengers or carrying relief material.

Amidst the disastrous situations in the state, news of valiant rescue operations have been pouring in and the expertise and care with which the armed forces are handling the grave situation are being praised in mainstream and social media.

The Indian armed forces have been carrying out intense relief work in Kerala and the ‘Operation Madad’ launched by all forces together has already entered its 11th day. On 17th August, the Army, Navy, Airforce, coast guard and NDRF were ordered to mobilize all their additional resources to Kerala to help citizens.

Five arrested in the Auraiya case admit they killed Sadhus because priests opposed cow slaughter

0

Three days post the gruesome act in which two Sadhu’s were murdered in Auriaya district on the intervening night of 14th and 15th August, the Uttar Pradesh police have identified 14 miscreants out of which 11 were present at the incident spot and arrested 5 in connection to the same.

As reported by various media houses, the accused have apparently admitted that they committed the crime as the priests were opposing cow slaughtering which the miscreants were involved in.

Following the Chief Minister, Yogi Adityanath’s order to probe the incident within 48 hours, the Director General of police Kanpur had ordered to form seven police teams which have been working on the case. The state crime branch has also assisted in the investigations. The teams arrested the accused namely, Salman, Nadeem, Sehzaad, Majnu alias Nazim and Jabbar, all residents of Kudarkot, a small town in Auraiya district, Uttar Pradesh, and also impounded six sharp weapons which were allegedly used to carry out the crime.

On further interrogation, the arrested revealed the names of a few others, Gaffar, Shahbaaz, Chunnu alias Sahib Alam, Chote, Bhole, Danish, Raja, Chaand, and Jabbar, who were also involved in the heinous crime. Police have launched a manhunt and continuous efforts are being made to arrest the rest as soon as possible.

The bodies of the priests were discovered on Wednesday morning when a devotee went to the Bhayanak Nath Mahadev temple to offer prayers. The two sadhus identified as Lajja Ram Yadav and Harbhajan were overpowered and attacked with sharp objects and were found dead with their limbs stretched over the cots and tied with clothes. The third Sadhu, Ram Sharan, was critically injured and referred to a hospital at Saifai in Etawah.

Locals in the area, infuriated by the killing, had set some shops ablaze and pelted stones forcing the police to resort to baton charge, lob tear-gas shells and fire in the air to disperse the mob. Subsequently, the situation was brought under control, however, to maintain law and order the area has been kept heavily guarded by the armed personnel. Now, however, the situation is slowly normalizing with shops reopening and people getting back to work, though the temple is still strictly guarded with armed personnel deployed heavily around the area.

Following the incident, the chief minister had also announced a financial aid of Rs 5 lakh each to the kin of the two deceased sadhus and Rs 1 lakh for the injured.

A Dainik Jagran report had claimed that other such incidents were reported in the state in recent days too. A similar incident was reported a few days prior, in which a temple mahant (head priest), Kalidas and another priest, Sonpal, were beaten to death in Uttar Pradesh’s Aligarh district, triggering protest by the locals. In another incident, a temple in Unnao was vandalised by miscreants and its idols were broken.

Atal Bihari Vajpayee, The eternal poet and the accidental politician

0

“The poet disappears into the poem, which stands mute, like an idol, until the reader breathes life back into it.”- Edward Hirsch wrote in his book “On Reading Poetry”.

A great poet, who spoke as much in his words as in he did in his pauses, ever-pregnant with timeless philosophical wisdom, stands mute, waiting by his readers to be read, to be understood. A great politician departs and there is a spate of political eulogies. Kind words, grand words flow from all ends of the political spectrum. I am trying to look at Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the poet and how his poetry defined his politics.

We are often tempted to believe that the person is a derivative of the world. We call the man a creature of circumstances. This is often true, but only to a limited extent. Similar circumstances produce different men and women. Our belief that the individual is the helpless victim of the world he or she lives in, is erroneous and is an unfair assessment of the depth and greatness of people like Vajpayee. When we try to hold and study a Ram Prasad Bismil as a revolutionary ignoring the fact that he was a polyglot poet and intellectual, or when we look at Lokmanya Tilak as just another Congressman and freedom fighter, ignoring his personality as a mathematician, astronomer and Indologist; we are doing grave injustice to such great souls.

To me, irrespective of the political upheavals Atalji faced in his own life, his struggles, his humiliations at the hands of vile and craftier politicians of the day in and out of parliament, Atalji’s victories go way beyond what he gained in politics. He did become the first non-congress politician to complete a full term as the prime minister in the face of the most hostile opposition, having lost the majority in the first term in 13 days. He did, like a phoenix, see the Party grow from one with only two seats in the Lok Sabha to the world’s largest political entity which is in power in India, leading the opposition by a mile. His political victories were nothing but the manifestation of Vajpayee- the Poet. He was not a poet of Mushayaras and Mehfils. He was a poet of the soul. He wrote what he believed in. It takes a rare strength of character for a political poet to recite in public a poem, declaring his Hindu tan man. His political success, the affection he received from the people emerged from the unapologetic honesty with which he unfolded his soul in front of the masses. He spoke what was then unspeakable as Indira Gandhi tried to rebuild her dynasty post the excesses of Emergency, he did what was at that time unthinkable. He gave voice to what tormented the souls of those who were not blessed with the magic of lucid words.

Many Indians alive today were raised through the days of British rule and in the initial days of independence under the Nehru dynasty, ruled by leaders more English than Indian, to be embarrassed, apologetic and ashamed of who they were. A land of snake-charmers, a third-world nation was our identity. Only people who were considered fit enough to occasionally pick us as a nation out of the squalid slavishness of soul were educated in foreign lands, blessed with foreign mannerisms and culture. Anything blatantly Indian, Bhartiya, was scorned at. The thoughts were muddled and words would not come to the parched Indian lips. Emergency, imposed by the daughter of the first feudal, and somehow incongruously, socialist lord, came as a blessing in disguise. Vajpayee began speaking and a floodgate of chained Indian thoughts broke open with slogans running in the darkest lanes of the remotest villages. Atal Bihari Bol Rahaa Hai, Indira Shashan Dol Raha hai (As Atal Bihari speaks, the throne of Indira shakes).  Bharat founds its courage in the words of a poet.

Shelley wrote,“Poets are the hierophants of an unappreciated inspiration; the mirrors of the gigantic shadow which futurity casts upon the present; the words which express what they understand not; the trumpets which sing to the battle and know not what they inspire… Poets are the unacknowledged legislators of the world.”

And once Vajpayee was anointed by the masses as the poet of the people, it really did not matter which election he won or lose. Through his words, he started a movement of national pride. He made us understand that Hinduism is not contrary to the principles of secularism, the principles of modernism. He came in as a shy brook and expanded like wide vistas of the Ganges in the plains of India. The kind of unapologetic voice he gave to the people, it was only a matter of time that political power came to him. And once it did, we realized what Shelley meant when he wrote about the gigantic shadow which futurity casts upon the present. We saw this turning real as World class roads and infrastructure began rolling in our towns and cities. Awestruck Indians struggling with escalators, looking lost in Malls in foreign lands became rarer and rarer. Telecommunication segment erupted, an ambitious river-linking project was initiated. The life of landlords descended into the world of the labourers. The word aspirational Indian gained currency.

It was thanks to his poetic vision that the aspirational Indian was not at war with the Dharmic Indian. The material merged with the spiritual. The term Hindu became acceptable as an identity and the term Hindu used in depreciating manner to explain abysmal growth rate of our economy lost currency. The old aristocracy came and hit back with a vengeance. Atal Ji being Atal Ji, refused to deal underhand and save his Government with those immortal lines- Sarkaarein Aati Jaati Rahengi, Desh Rahnaa Chaahiye, Loktantra Bacha Rahnaa Chahiye (Governments will come and go; the nation must be defended, the democracy must be protected). The ideological offsprings of Macaulay rubbed their hands in glee as the poet-politician bewildered at the unscrupulous polity, having been, by then, called Traitor and Crazy by the principal opposition, walked resolving to himself, muttering to himself, Raar Nahin Thaanunga, Haar Nahin Maanunga (Will not hold anything against anyone, will not give up either). The elite Indian which looked at the humble Bharatiya with disdain felt, that with their wily political mechanization and rhetoric, they have defeated the poet for the good. But as is the nature of a poet, he thundered back from the gloomy dust of defeat, with a roar which echoed so harshly across the citadels of power that they are reverberating with it like glass-houses even today.

Today, in his death, we celebrate Atal Ji as Ajaat Shatru- the one without enemies. Why so, after so many ugly skirmishes? How is it that his grand benign magnificence prevailed over the pettiness of the politics which surrounded him, we may ask. We find the answer in what Yeats wrote of a poet. A poet is a man of ideas, and his ideas become his wings which allow him to levitate over the pettiness of everyday politics. He is a man of ideas. Ideas do not have enemies, dogmas have.  WB Yeats wrote, “We make out of the quarrel with others, rhetoric, but out of the quarrel with ourselves, poetry. This allows a poet to prevail, over the opposition, over difficulties. He introspects more than he instructs. That is why he succeeds where others fail. He guides, lighten the dark path and steps back. He makes us initiate, he makes us follow, for in his words resonates our darkest desires; in his poetry soars our hopes which had broken wings.

Edward Hirsch wrote, “I take a poet as a maker who sends out a formal enticement, a provocation, a challenge. The success of the poet is that unlike feudal leaders who speak at the people, the poet steps down, sits among his readers and sings his verses. This is the way he has learnt to make his art succeed. This is the way his politics work, by being one of the people. Jorge Louis Borge says Poetry can work its magic by fulfilling our profound need to recover a past and prefigure a future. Is it not what Politics has to do at least in a nation like India with ancient heritage and future promises? This is what Atal Ji brought to Indian politics, when he was at the helm himself and when he is breathing among us in the being of Narendra Modi.

Socrates celebrates a philosopher in politics but almost shuns a poet out of politics. To me, I cannot find the difference between the two. A philosopher is as much a man of ideas as is a poet, and often, the two are the same. I cannot, for instance, differentiate between Nietzsche the poet and Nietzsche the philosopher. A poet who can rise above the fictional ideal and emerge as an agent of action, inevitably is a philosopher, and bestowed with political power, becomes a philosopher-king. Apart from softer nuances that Vajpayee brought to Indian polity, the dreaminess and imaginations of a poet, reflecting in his policies; he did also bring in a politics of astute consideration. Fair, considerate and self-assured at once. We saw it more than once. We saw the philosopher-king in action when Kargil happened as Pakistan back-stabbed his warm gesture of friendship with an intrusion into India. We saw a decisive and unwavering philosopher-king willing to go to a war for honour and win with Operation Vijay. Another time, we experienced this strong, clear and decisive leadership during the Pokharan nuclear tests which placed Indian into the big league. History is always a record of things not done rather than things done and we may not be able to appropriately assess the impact of the Pokharan test. Vajpayee- The Philosopher-king not only offered a break for India from “This is the way we have been doing it”, he also paved a way for a persistent future.

We hope that the blessings of Vajpayee remain forever on this land which has suffered so much for centuries, and our own Marcus Aurelius keeps watching over us. Politicians without values and principles will continue to attempt to sway us from our chosen path, but we must remember there was immense wisdom in the words of Socrates when he said, Unless, said I, either philosophers become kings in our states or those whom we now call our kings and rulers take to the pursuit of philosophy seriously and adequately, and there is the conjunction of these two things, political power and philosophic intelligence, ….there can be no cessation of troubles, dear Glaucon, for our states, nor, I fancy, for the human race either.” For this, we need to understand Atal Bihari Vajpayee the poet and philosopher first, before we attempt to understand the Vajpayee the politician. The politician Vajpayee is nothing but the continuity of the Poet-Philosopher Atal Ji and that is the leader whose spiritual presence we need watching over us, even when he is gone.

Here is how Gujarat Congress MLAs let Gujarat drown last year in floods to save Ahmed Patel’s Rajya Sabha seat

0

In July 2017, Gujarat faced one of the worst floods in recent history. As on 1st August 2017, as many as 224 people had died in Gujarat from 1st June 2017 in flood-related deaths. Even as Gujarat was drowning, Congress flew 44 of its MLAs to a resort in Bengaluru, owned by DK Shivakumar, Karnataka Congress MLA. The reason was simple. 3 Rajya Sabha seats in Gujarat were up for elections on 5th August, one of which was the high profile seat of Sonia Gandhi’s close aide and senior Congress leader Ahmed Patel.

Prior to the elections, Congress, which had 57 MLAs in an assembly of 182 seats, was left with 51 MLAs after senior leader Shankersinh Vaghela and five others quit the party. One of the MLAs to quit this day was Balwantsinh Rajput, then Chief Whip of Congress in Assembly. With the strength of the Assembly having fallen, Patel needed 45 votes to stay in the Rajya Sabha. As Gujarat reeled under massive floor fury, Congress felt saving one Rajya Sabha seat was far more important than saving and rescuing people of Gujarat, because of power trumps compassion.

With a week left to voting on 8th August, towards the end of July, Congress flew 44 out of its remaining MLAs to the luxury resort in Karnataka. There, Congress MLAs were bored with the South Indian cuisine and a chef who could prepare Gujarati delicacies was reportedly brought in to keep the MLAs entertained. DK Shivakumar is the same Congress MLA who even hosted Karnataka Congress MLAs after Karnataka elections in May this year at the same resort to avoid defection and poaching prior to the floor test.

July 2017. Gujarat Congress MLAs feasting in a resort in Bengaluru as their constituencies faced one of the worst floods in a decade.

During the Gujarat floods when the Congress MLAs vacationed in Bengaluru resort, 255 sorties were flown by Indian Air Force for the rescue/relief operations in Gujarat. Banaskantha area in north Gujarat was one of the worst hits. Four out of nine Assembly seats were held by Congress in Banaskantha. All of these four MLAs were in Karnataka resort. The MLAs of flood-hit areas even had their phones switched off, completely cut off from any communication even as the people in their own constituencies, who voted them, cried for help and rescue from floods.

July 2017 Gujarat floods

So today I am glad Congress President Rahul Gandhi’s conscience has been awoken to urge the Prime Minister to declare the devastating Kerala floods as a national disaster, even when he was factually incorrect.

Unfortunately Gujarat wasn’t the only state to reel under the politics of Congress in face of a disaster in recent times. In June-July 2013, over multi-day cloudburst which left about 1,00,000 pilgrims stranded and killed about 5,748 people in Uttarakhand, Congress waited for Rahul Gandhi, who was then the vice president of Congress and pegged as PM candidate for 2014 elections, to return from his trip aboard before flagging off rescue material. Even as the relief material reached Uttarakhand, then a Congress ruled state, the same was held up for want of ‘clearances’ from authorities.

Clearly, lessons learnt from the way Congress vacillated Gujarat just one year back are finally coming handy.

Income Tax collection in the country reaches a new record, Rs 10.03 Lakh Crores in 2017-18

0

Income Tax collection reached a record high with the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) confirming the figures reaching a whopping Rs 10.03 lakh crores, during 2017-18. A new record in the total number of I-T returns filed during the financial year was also set, reported Financial Express.

Shabri Bhattasali, Member of CBDT stated while addressing a two-day conference of the I-T administrators of Eastern Zone at Guwahati on Friday that during 2017-18, a record number of 6.92 crores I-T returns were filed, which was 1.31 crore higher than the 5.61 crore returns filed in 2016-17. She further added that the department registered 1.06 crore new taxpayers filing returns during 2017-18 and it aims to add 1.25 crore new filers for the year 2018-19. The North East region too saw an increase in the number of filers which stood to 1.89 lakh, she said.

The Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, North Eastern Region, L C Joshi Ranee, reportedly confirmed that Rs 7,097 crore tax was collected from the region during 2017-18, which was 16.7% higher than Rs 6,082 crore collected in the preceding year. He furthered that the next target for the region in 2018-19 has been set at Rs 8,357 crore, which if achieved would be 17.75% more than last year’s collection.

Ranee further added that ‘Aaykar Seva Kendras’ are operational in 22 out of 29 stations in the North East Regions. The I-T department aims to increase its taxpayer base while delivering superior service and these kendras are helpful to the public. He also added that the department aims to open more Ayakar Seva Kendras in remote areas for the service of people.
