Everyone wants ‘New India’ but Congress wants their own version of India – PM walks Rajya Sabha down the memory lane

0

In a speech during the debate on the motion of thanks to the President’s address, the Prime Minister made some stinging remarks on the kind of India that INC wants. He was referring to opposition’s criticism of the idea of ‘New India’ mentioned in the President’s speech.

He said that INC does not want the ‘New India’ but ‘Gandhi’s India.’ First, he remarked that he also wants Gandhi’s India:

“Even I want Gandhi’s India because Gandhi proposed dissolution of the Congress party after independence was achieved. Congress Mukt Bharat is not Modi’s idea. It was Gandhi’s idea. We are just trying to follow his footsteps”.

Later on, he went on to list instances from history which were part of Congress’s India in his speech. He added that Congress wanted to return to those days which were full of corruption, lawlessness and rioting.

The Prime Minister said :

“Do you want an India of army jeep scam. Do you want an India of Bofors scam? Do you want an India of Emergency period where Morarji Desai, Jayprakash Narayan and lakhs of Indians were jailed? Do you want a Bharat where thousands of innocent Sikhs are slaughtered when a ‘huge tree’ falls? You don’t want a new India. you want an India where administration bows down to accused in ‘tandoor murder*’ case and other leaders. You [Congress] want an India where a person responsible for Bhopal gas tragedy is allowed to escape from the country in a plane”.

The Prime Minister took the Congress party which had criticised the concept of New India by reminding them of the kind of India that was existing under the rule of their party he even revived an old, forgotten case where he probably referred to the infamous tandoor murder case in which Sushil Sharma (the then Youth Congress President) was accused of chopping his wife’s body and cooking it in a Tandoor oven.

1. Linga Purana – Translated by Bibek Debroy

This is one of the 13 puranas that I have read. The Linga Purana is number 11 on the list of the eighteen Mahapuranas. This Purana is a tamsik Purana, a Purana that glorifies Shiva. The Linga Purana is a comparatively short Purana because it is just eleven thousand shlokas long. It is divided into two parts. The first part is known as Purva bhaga and has one hundred and eight chapters. The second part is known as Uttara bhaga and has fifty-five chapters.

This Purana like most other Puranas is narrated by Sauti or Lomaharshana, a disciple of Vedvyasa to some sages living in the Namisharanya forest.

There were many interesting stories in the Purana. The Linga Purana was very interesting to read. Compared to the other Puranas that I have read; this Purana comes at number 3. This Purana concentrates more on the creation and destruction of the Universe. It also talks a lot about the geography of the Earth. The Linga Purana has fewer stories and most of them have been mentioned in other Puranas. In a few stories, there is a twist which is added to glorify Shiva. It was nice reading this Purana. I have also reviewed it on my blog.

2. The Kishkindha Chronicles: Saraswati’s Intelligence – By Vamsee Juluri

This book talks about Hanuman before he met Lord Rama. Vamsee Juluri wrote the book, and it’s the first book in the trilogy of Hanuman’s life, that he has been writing. It starts with a small race between Hanuman, Sugriva, Vali and other monkeys. Sugriva hurts himself and spills blood, which Hanuman touches when he goes to help Sugriva. When the other monkeys saw the blood, they yelled ‘Parama Dharma Apchara’ and ran away. Parama dharma apchara was the violation of the prime duty. The people in Hanuman’s time believed in Ma Saraswati. She was the one who poured blood into their body when they were born. A single drop of blood was made of the sunlight of one hundred and eight leaves which made it so precious. Parama dharma apchara was when you spilt blood. He was thus banned from Kishkindha. He took Sugriva to Vishwamitra who healed him. They decide to accompany Vishwamitra on his journey to uncover hidden secrets in the north, followed by Sugriva. On their journey, they met the Ganeshas (elephants) who accompanied them. On their way, they discover a pack of deadly barbaric creatures who ate elephants and then used their skin to disguise themselves. After a study of the child, they realized that these creatures had to be tamed, or the parama dharma would be breached. Vamsee Juluri knows how to capture the reader’s attention and not make the book boring in between. He beautifully describes the story of Hanuman’s life. Through the whole book, he keeps talking about what is Dharma, Parama Dharma, etc. This way he also teaches us more about Indian culture, through a story. I liked the way he favoured Hanuman and told us about his habits, culture, fears and his qualities. He also sympathized Vali as he was almost a servant for his mother Riksharaja.

3. Lanka’s Princess – by Kavita Kane

Lanka’s Princess is about Surpanakha, also called Lanka’s princess. Surpanakha means hard as nails.  The youngest and the least cared for in her family, she is the sister of the mighty Ravan. Ravan is an asura and the villain of the great epic the Ramayana. The first opinion that forms in your head, if you have read the Ramayana, is that Surpanakha is an evil shape-shifting monster. She had tried to kill Sita, but had her nose and ears sliced off by Lakshmana, brother of Ram. If you are hearing about the Ramayana for the first time, then after reading this, you too would have formed a bad opinion about her. However, instead of just imagining a shape-shifting witch, try to think from Surpanakha’s point of view. I did this and a question came to my mind. Was Surpanakha evil from the start or did she turn evil later? I read this book and got my answer. The author, Kavita Kane, has tried to sympathize with Surpanakha while being fair to Ram and Lakshman. In this way, she has shown both sides of the story. She has succeeded in doing so. I, as a kid, think the book could have done well without the overwhelming romance between Surpanakha and Vidyujiva (Surpanakha’s husband). Others might find this important or interesting, but I didn’t care much. In the book, Kavita Kane describes the small and trivial, yet important events in Surpanakha’s life that have not been written in the different versions of the Ramayana. She has described most of the story from Surpanakha’s eyes, concentrating on her emotions. It has been a nice experience reading this book. This is one of my favourite Indian books. I learnt a lot about a little-known character through this book. I have also reviewed it on my blog, so you can go there for more information on this book.

A Purana is a sacred text. There are many Puranas. It is believed that Vedvyasa or Krishna Dvaipayana had written them. The Puranas together make one crore shlokas. Since this number was too much for mere mortals to read, he summarized it to 4 lakh shlokas. The truth is that no one person wrote the Puranas. Many people wrote them. The eighteen main ones are the ones that Vedvyasa wrote. Puranas are divided into three categories. They are satvik (puranas that glorify Vishnu), tamsik (puranas that glorify Shiva) and rajsik (puranas that glorify Brahma). The Puranas have many stories in them. Most of them are related to the Ramayana and Mahabharata. They also have new and different stories which I have not heard or read them before. Bibek Debroy has translated the Puranas to English abridged versions. Each of the versions has a particular part of the Purana as it would be very tough to give the whole version. They are short and easy to read. I find it very easy to understand as they use simple English. I have also reviewed these abridged versions. So far, I have read and reviewed 13 puranas. They are on my blog. I enjoyed reading the Puranas and look forward to reading all of them.

6. Sita’s Sister – by Kavita Kane

This book is about Urmila. She is a character from the Ramayana who we don’t know much about. Urmila is most commonly mentioned when Lakshman decides to go into exile with Ram. Sometimes we wonder why didn’t Urmila go into exile with Lakshman. She chose to be separated from her husband for fourteen years, rather than to go with him. The Ramayana never really does talk about Urmila. Every time I read the Ramayana, it talks about Ram, Lakshman, Sita, Ravan, Dasharatha, Kaikeyi etc. It never specifically tells us how did Urmila bear these years of separation, and how did she feel when Lakshman decided to go to the forest, leaving her behind. I think Urmila, also known as Sita’s sister was an exceptionally brave woman to bear this separation. This book gives an answer to one of my many questions when I read the Ramayana. The author Kavita Kane knows how to bring out the true feelings of a person in her books. So far, I have read three books of hers and all three of them concentrate on the feelings and thoughts of the person. All her books have been on female characters from the Ramayana or Mahabharata. In this book, it concentrates on all that Urmila feels and thinks. I only felt that it could have done without the romance between Urmila and Lakshman. Otherwise, I feel that it was a nice book and I enjoyed reading it. Between the three of Kavita Kane’s books, this was my favourite.

7. Culture Course – by Bharatiya Vidya Bhavana

Weak in history? Well here’s a way to learn history easily and in a fun way. Read the Culture Course to improve your learning. This set of books are a lot like the Purna Vidya series that were mentioned in the April edition. The Culture Course series narrate around 15 stories in each book. Based on each story there are 6-7 questions. There is only one difference between the Purna Vidya series and the Culture Course. Purna Vidya mostly talks about stories from the Ramayana and Mahabharata whereas the Culture Course books narrate stories about folktales, Mahabharata and Ramayana stories, stories about great rishis, the foundation of holy places, rituals, etc. These books talk a lot about the holy places in India and rituals performed there. They also talk about stuff from different religions. These books teach you a lot about Hindu culture and at the same time, they are very interesting. I enjoy reading and answering the questions in this series

Trouble for Karti Chidambaram after Indrani Mukerjea alleges she paid Rs 5 crore bribe to his firms

0

In what potentially might be big trouble for senior Congress leader P Chidambaram’s son Karti, Indrani Mukerjea the promoter of INX media had allegedly admitted before the Enforcement Directorate to have bribed his firms.

As reported by the Pioneer, Indrani who has been languishing in jail for allegedly murdering her daughter Sheena Bhora, has seen her troubles increased, with her being sent to a 14 day judicial custody in the INX media case. Earlier she was taken into a two day custody by the CBI.

Indrani who is one of the founders of INX media, is in the dock along with her husband Peter (another founder), for violating Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) guidelines while receiving funds from Mauritius. A case in this regard has been registered by the enforcement directorate (ED), under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

As per an FIR filed by the CBI, INX media in 2006 had received FIPB clearances to bring in foreign investment worth Rs 5 crores. But in 2007 it was discovered that the company had decided to illegally bring in Rs 305 crore of investment instead. They as a result got in trouble with the Income Tax authorities.

The Karti Chidambaram angle comes in this matter with the allegation that, after the Income Tax notice arrived, Indrani gave a Rs 5 crore bribe to firms owned by Karti for acquiring “dubious and illegal” post facto FIPB clearances given to INX media by then Finance Minister P Chidambaram. Post facto approval means that approval is given after any project has either begun or completed.

The report claims that Indrani admitted during an interrogation by the ED in December that she had ‘made a deal’ with Karti to get these post facto FIPB clearances required for Rs 305 crores worth of foreign investment. In turn she allegedly arranged to pay the bribe to Karti’s firms Chess Management Services and Advantage Strategic Consulting.

The CBI in its FIR also claims that such a “deceitful and fallacious proposal” was favourably considered by Finance Ministry officials and approved by then Finance Minister. This might potentially signal that the buck might finally stop with P Chidambaram in this matter.

The past few months have seen the law tightening its screws around Karti Chidambaram in this matter.

It was reported that he was grilled for a whopping 11 hours regarding this case in January. It was also found that 63 companies including biggies like Vodafone, Cairn, Aditya Birla Nova, Arcelor-Mittal, Diageo, DLF, Essar, Godrej were clients of his firm Chess Management Services Private Limited.

Besides this Karti is also embroiled in the Aircel-Maxis deal where the ED is investigating various aspects of the FIPB approval given in the deal under anti-money laundering laws.

Ministry of Defence releases statement on the Rafale deal, punctures holes in Congress’ allegations

0

Following the allegations of corruption and lack of transparency on Rafale fighter jet deal by Congress on government, the Ministry of Defence today released a statement clarifying their position on the same.

In the statement, the ministry refutes the allegation levelled by Congress and even clarifies how the Congress has been giving misleading and damaging statements regarding the deal. The statement says how the UPA government sat on the negotiations even as there was an alarming decline in the strength of fighter jets.

The statement asserts that the contract government entered into in 2016 is better in terms of capability, price, equipment, delivery, maintenance, training, etc.

It also refuted Congress’ claims of prior negotiations having a clause for transfer of technology. The statement says that previous negotiations did not have any provision for transfer of technology but only to manufacture under licence.

The fact that Congress is attacking the government on these points just shows either they are hypocrites or are wilfully trying to misguide people by giving out partial and factually incorrect information.

PM Modi’s Ramayana jibe on Renuka Chowdhury’s hysterical cackling

0

PM Modi spoke in the Rajya Sabha after his stinging speech in the Lok Sabha today. Unlike the Lok Sabha speech which saw high drama amidst constant sloganeering by Congress MPs, his Rajya Sabha address was more or less peaceful. However, it was not without some awkward moments which the PM used to make satirical remarks.

One such moment was when PM Modi referred to an old speech of ex-Home Minister and ex BJP President L K Advani made twenty years ago. When the PM proceeded to mention AADHAR was actually conceptualised here (the parliament), Congress MP Renuka Chowdhary started laughing hysterically.

Her sudden and loud laughter took many by surprise but the Rajya Sabha speaker and Vice President Venkaiyah Naidu did not take it kindly. He not only chided Renuka Chaudhury for ‘loose and unruly behaviour’ but also advised her to visit a doctor if she has a problem.

The PM too did not let the opportunity go. He requested the speaker that he must not stop Renuka Chowdhury. He added further, “many years after Ramayan we are getting to hear such a hearty laughter.”

The PM’s remark made the Rajya Sabha erupt with laughter. While Renuka Chowdhury stopped promptly, Social Media was abuzz with reactions and comments. People started guessing as to which character the PM was referring to when he mentioned Ramayan.

Twitterati not only hailed the PM’s sense of humour, they also questioned Renuka Chowdhury’s behaviour inside the Parliament.

Kanchan Gupta, the veteran journalist, also commented that while Renuka Chowdhari has the right to crackle, other have the right to crack a joke at the crackling.

Not a dull moment, when the PM speaks!

Congress’ trouble in Northeast continues after it struggles to find candidates for Nagaland elections

0

The Congress party might be in for a jolt in Nagaland after it has been reported that it is struggling to find candidates for the upcoming elections in the state.

As per a Congress functionary who is overseeing the party’s preparations for the state’s polls, owing to the lack of candidates the party might end up contesting just 20-25 seats. What made matters worse was that the Congress had managed to ready a list of 20 candidates last week, but even out of that two people decided to leave the party.

The party workers’ lack of enthusiasm, shortage of resources and organisational weakness has been blamed for such a muted response.

Seems that earlier the Congress had also hoped for a pre-poll alliance with the ruling Naga Peoples Front (NPF), which too suffered a blow after NPF announced candidates for all the 60 seats. The last time Congress was in power in the state was from 1993-2003 under SC Jamir and going by this year’s preparation, it may not be able to win the elections anytime soon.

The elections are to be held on 27th February and the last date to file the nominations is Wednesday. As per latest reports, the party has released a list of 23 candidates for the polls.

Such a muted response for the Congress might again bring into focus, the troubles it has been facing in the Northeast.

About a week back, it was reported that a whopping 115 Congress members had resigned from the party in Meghalaya, on the day when Rahul Gandhi kick-started his poll campaign in the state. Besides this four Congress MLAs had joined the BJP at the start of January.

In December it was reported that senior Congress leader in Tripura Ratan Lal Nath, along with a large number of party members joined the BJP.

Back in July 2017, the Congress had suffered a blow in Manipur when two of its MLAs had joined the BJP led government in the state.

I have to tell the entire nation about NPA mess our previous government created : PM Modi

0

The Prime Minister has spoken out regarding the NPA problem left behind by the UPA government in the parliament. He said that he did not speak on the issue in spite of the accusations hurled at the government by the opposition parties for the sake of country’s economy.

He said the entire ‘paap’ (sin) of NPA belongs to the UPA government as they had been giving loans to their cronies. He also accused them of hiding the NPA details from the country by restructuring the loans of their cronies. We had done a detailed report on the NPA issue earlier.

What damage could’ve happened if the PM produced a white paper on NPAs in 2014

Bank run: The banking system runs largely on the basis of the faith of the depositors. Loans are given out from the deposits of the banks for businessmen, personal purposes, education, etc. However, if a significant number of depositors of a bank start withdrawing their money from banks en masse, the entire bank will fail. If such a phenomenon happens to every major bank, then the entire banking system will collapse. This phenomenon is called a bank run by economists.

Modi did a great service to the nation by resisting the urge to produce a white paper

If banks fail, the entire economy of the country will collapse. Thus, Modi did a great service to the nation by ensuring that the trust of the people in the country’s banks remains intact even at the cost of negative political propaganda by the Congress party. Now, that the mess has been addressed in a systematic manner and a plan for recapitalisation and reform of banks is in place, he came out in the open and placed the facts before the country

The Congress party tried to shout down the prime minister throughout his speech during his address. Once more information is made available on the subject, we will realise the magnitude of the scam of Congress parties in the NPA mess.

Rafale deal: Congress scores a self goal with misplaced allegations and ill-informed criticism

0

Congress President Rahul Gandhi yesterday questioned Government of India for Rafale deal, implying corruption, favouritism in the procurement of the jets.

In all this, Gandhi forgot that it was in 2008 that Government of India entered into a Security Agreement which protects classified information and material exchanged under the Inter-Governmental Agreement. In 2008, A K Antony was the UPA government’s Defence Minister, who had entered into this agreement.

Moreover, in 2007, during a Parliament session, when Antony was asked details about purchasing missiles from Israel, Antony said, “divulging details in this regard on the floor of the House would not be in the interest of national security.”

Not just that, there are more instances where Congress-led government said they could not disclose details of the defence deals keeping in mind the sensitivity of the details and national security.

Other than details of the purchase of missiles from Israel, UPA’s defence ministers refused to give details about the purchase of satellite for the Army, Henderson Brook Report on 1962 Indo-Sino war which still remains classified and unreleased, and damages caused by the crash of IAF aircrafts.

Coming to the allegations on Rafale deal, there are few points the opposition is attacking the government without realising that they are embarrassing themselves by putting up these questions. Here is a point by point explanation regarding the issues raised by the opposition.

1. Congress questions the ‘Secrecy Agreement’ which prohibits the government from disclosing the details in the purchase agreement.

The ‘Secrecy Agreement’ was originally entered into by A K Antony in 2008, the then Defence Minister under the UPA.

2. UPA claims they signed the deal for 126 Rafale aircrafts for $10.2 billion with the transfer of technology agreement. As against that NDA government is buying 36 Rafale aircrafts for $8.7 billion without transfer of technology agreement.

To make things clear, UPA never got into signing an agreement for Rafale deal. They were still in the negotiation stage. In 2001, Indian Air Force sought additional fighter jets. However, the actual procurement procedure started in 2007. Antony approved Request For Proposal (RFP) to procure 126 aircrafts in August 2007. While the initial deal was estimated at $10.8 billion, with 18 of them in flyaway condition and remaining to be built by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) under transfer of technology agreement. However, the deal never went through. The negotiations started from 2012 which had been going on for four years till the final agreement was signed in 2016. So the claims of Congress that they had signed a better deal than NDA, are factually incorrect.

More than that, the Rafale fighter jets are not part of conventional fighter squadron bean count in the strictest sense. The Indian Rafale is also a strategic delivery weapon for air-delivered nuclear devices. Which means, these jets are part of India’s nuclear missiles related mission. Hence, while they will also serve as conventional deterrents for their strategic location on Pakistan and China frontiers, their role is quite defined.

3. Private players are benefiting out of the deal.

In November 2017, Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala alleged a ‘huge scam’ in the Rafale deal and accused Modi Government of ‘promoting the interests of Prime Minister’s crony capitalist friends’. He accused Modi Government of violating Defence Procurement Procedure and bypassed interest of HAL. He cast aspersions on Anil Ambani led Reliance Defence Limited for alleged corruption. While Reliance has termed these allegations baseless the truth is far from what Congress is saying. Part of the agreement with French Government states that private players will be allowed to manufacture such jets to break the monopoly of HAL and also bring in competitiveness which would lead to better competitive rates and quality. Private players have been trying for decades to enter defence manufacture sector, but HAL is said to have a strong government lobby, which is why it never materialised. In May last year, the government gave nod to ‘strategic partnership’ policy in the defence sector which opened the doors for Indian private sector players to start manufacturing high-end defence equipment and weapons in partnership with foreign original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). With this, private players could enter four key segments in defence- fighter aircrafts, helicopters, submarines and armoured vehicles such as tanks.

The fact that Congress is attacking the government on these points just shows either they are hypocrites or are wilfully trying to misguide people by giving out partial and factually incorrect information.

8 sharp attacks launched by Narendra Modi against the Nehru-Gandhi family in his Lok Sabha speech

0

Narendra Modi was in his elements today as he tore into the Congress Party in his speech on the Motion of Thanks on the President’s address in the Lok Sabha. He rebutted the claims of the Congress Party in detail and took several digs at its policy failure and its boastful claims.

  1. In a scathing attack, Narendra Modi put the blame for the partition of the country squarely on the feet of the Indian National Congress. He stated that India is still suffering from the seeds of hatred sown in the country as a consequence of the actions of the Congress Part during that period.

  2. Narendra Modi also ripped into the claims of the Congress party that democracy was a gift granted to India solely by Nehru. Narendra Modi mentioned that the statements of leaders from the Congress Party gives one the impression that the Indian nation came into being on the 15th of August, 1947 and that such an opinion reeked of arrogance and hubris.

  3. The Prime Minister elaborated on the many ways in which the Congress Party violated the ethos of Democracy. He accused the Congress Party of lacking commitment to the principles of Democracy citing the many occasions when the central government under Congress dissolved state governments at their whim and without any proper reason for it.

  4. He also mentioned how if true democratic principles had been respected, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel would have been the first Prime Minister of India and not Nehru. He again stated that had the stalwart from Gujarat assumed the seat of the Prime Minister, the whole of Kashmir would have been under Indian control today.
  5. Narendra Modi also mentioned the numerous occasions on which the Gandhi family had insulted popular leaders from non-privileged backgrounds. He mentioned how former President of India, Neelam Sanjeeva Reddy was humiliated by the Congress. He also mentioned the insult suffered by Congress leader T. Anjaiah at the hands of Rajiv Gandhi.

  6. He also remarked upon the ‘coronation’ of Rahul Gandhi as the President of the Congress Party and how the whole internal machinery of the party was used against a young leader to prevent him from contesting the election against Rahul Gandhi.

  7. Narendra Modi also observed how the entire state machinery was used to promote the image of the Nehru-Gandhi even at the cost of the development of the country. He observed that the history of our nation had been distorted and true heroes of the nation were not paid their due for the Congress feared that it will take away the limelight from the only one family that they care about. He remarked that the entire media had been used to spread sweet songs about the deeds of the Nehru-Gandhi family and shield them from all criticism.

  8. The Prime Minister also accused the Congress Party of trying to create a sense of hopelessness in the country merely for political gains. And he deemed it shameful that when the Army was resisting Chinese forces at Doklam, Rahul Gandhi chose to meet Chinese officials instead of consulting the government on the issue. He also condemned the questions raised by members of the Congress on the surgical strikes conducted against Pakistan by the Army.

The Congress will be reeling from the attack launched by the Prime Minister in his Lok Sabha speech today. As the General Election approaches, Narendra Modi is turning on the heat on the Congress Party.

Twitter reacts to PM’s stinging speech in the Parliament, and Congress’ blatant display of hooliganism

0

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke in the Parliament today. While his speech was welcomed by repeated loud applause and cheers by NDA members in the Parliament, the Congress MPs created a ruckus. Ignoring all decorum and minimal courtesy expected from elected representatives in the house, they sloganeered constantly and tried their best to interrupt the PM’s speech.

The PM, however, was at his oratory best. Without being disturbed, he carried on his powerful speech to the opposition’s utter frustration.

As expected, social media was ablaze with praises, memes and reactions to the PM’s exemplary show of elegance and power of a true leader.

PM Modi’s aggressive speech against Congress over their inefficiency and his continuation despite sloganeering and noise by its MPs were hailed by many.

Many condemned Congress for trying to disrupt the Parliamentary process and absence of respect for the country’s democratically elected Prime Minister.

Congress MPs invited mockery and jokes by their behaviour.

Twitterati also were quick to point out that the PM’s memorable speech will be in fact the harbinger of 2019 election results.

This was by far one of the most stinging speeches of the Prime Minister that not only spoke about his government’s achievements but also about the failures of Congress, their lack of democracy and historical blunders. With this, it would seem like the Prime Minister has truly inaugurated the election year.
