NDTV journalist Nidhi shows lack of statistical understanding, gets mocked

0

Pew Research Centre, one of the leading think tanks based in the US, yesterday released a survey result, which showed widespread support for Prime Minister Narendra Modi in India and that the nation seemed to be doing increasingly well under the leadership of Modi. The survey stated that Indians were very upbeat about Modi, the economy and India’s direction.

The findings were part of a Pew Research Center survey conducted among 2,464 respondents in India from 21st February to 10th March, 2017, few months after the demonetisation, one of the major economic reforms undertaken by Narendra Modi.

The same was shared by BJP social media head Amit Malviya on Twitter, and since it portrays the Modi government in positive light, NDTV’s Nidhi Razdan could not digest it. She quickly proceeded to mock Malviya and Pew Research.

Nidhi was called out for her lack of statistical understanding that the sample size was perfectly acceptable, and the survey is also conducted by a reputed organisation, not random online surveys.

Twitter users even took a dig at NDTV, her employers.

Incidentally, Derek O’brien, who is best known for defaming private citizens in Parliament, also tried to deride the survey.

As someone who grew up watching his quiz shows, a part of my childhood died on seeing this blatant display of bigotry.

However, when Nidhi got called out for her failure to comprehend how statistics work, she shifted her goalposts.

Nidhi’s lack of comprehension skills aside, the sample size by Pew Research Centre is perfectly valid.

As per widely accepted sample size calculators, this is a perfectly valid sample size.

But then, why let facts come in way of propaganda? Perhaps if Nidhi distrusts the survey so much, perhaps she should ask her employers to not run as many as three stories on the same survey. [1],[2],[3]

Truth about the mysterious ‘red marks’ put across ‘Muslim’ colonies in Ahmedabad

0

Ahead of upcoming elections in Gujarat, panic was spread across Ahmedabad that mysterious ‘red marks’ had appeared in some colonies in Muslim dominated localities. Many media houses reported that panic had gripped the city over these ‘red crosses’ which were allegedly put up to ‘identify’ the residents of those colonies. Many also added fuel to fire by reporting “Nazi-type” vermillion crosses spotted on Ahmedabad’s minority houses.

‘Mysterious’ red mark in Ahmedabad residential colony

Self-styled social activist Teesta Setalvad, who is accused of embezzling the donation money received for 2002 riot victims, also filed a complaint with the Election Commission claiming that these marks have come up exclusively in Muslim localities. Teesta, through her publication Sabrang, fanned panic by claiming “the marking makes it easy to identify Muslim homes in different neighbourhoods and in turn makes it easy to target Muslim residents.”

The mainstream media and fringe elements like Teesta made it appear that the ruling BJP, which was in power during the 2002 riots took place in Ahmedabad with Prime Minister Narendra Modi as Chief Minister of Gujarat, is trying to give the upcoming elections a communal flavour.

“Stop Paldi from turning into Juhapura”

They also claimed posters were put up to ask residents of an area in Ahmedabad, Paldi, to make sure it doesn’t turn into another Juhapura, a predominantly Muslim ghetto. Reading these two together would make one believe that some anti-social elements are trying to give communal flavour to the elections.

But truth is far from this perceived hate towards Muslims.

It turns out the marks were made by Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) as part of the civic body’s garbage collection project. Chirag Shah, deputy health officer of AMC said these marks were ‘point of interest’ which will be then given stickers to install GPS system to track the drivers of AMC to see whether they are collecting garbage or not. The stickers will be put up in upcoming days at the points identified by the corporation adding that such marks were put up at Hindu colonies as well.

Twitter users and residents of Ahmedabad also pointed out how the report by Times Now conveniently left out the part where the reporter says that the marks were placed even outside Hindu colonies.

But by then, fear mongering was at its peak on social media.

Serial offender when it comes to lying, leftist propaganda website The Wire also tried to spread panic.

At a time when Gujarat Elections, which is believed to be the curtain raiser for 2019 General Elections, is just around the corner, this shameless lying and propaganda does not really come as a surprise.

GST Rates reduced but prices remain the same? Wait for December…

0

On 10th of November 2017, the GST Council emerged out of its meeting at Guwahati, raining GST rate cuts on businesses. GST rates on about 178 items was reduced and the 28% GST slab was pruned. The one rate cut which got the most attention was the one on restaurants. The GST Council had announced that restaurants would now charge GST at 5% instead of 12% or 18%.

Although the changes were announced on 10th November, they were to be effective from 15th November, once the notifications were out. While many sectors like FMCG and automobile sector had reduced prices explicitly ever since GST came in from 1st of July 2017, the restaurant sector had more or less kept prices the same, choosing not to pass on the benefits of GST. Come 15th November, everyone waited with baited breath to finally see restaurants fall in line, thanks to the major cut from 12%/18% to 5%.

We had explained in a previous article that due to something called “input tax credit”, although the rate of GST had come down by 13%, the actual price of food may come down by 3% odd only. But on 15th November, social media users did not get to see even that small a decrease in prices.

Some users found that restaurants were still charging 18% GST. This could be put down to technical issues because it may have taken time to upgrade softwares and billing systems:

Some users reported a minor decrease in the food bill, which could be attributed to the aforesaid reason: Input Tax Credit

But in some cases, like this bill from McDonald’s, people noticed that the bill amount was exactly the same, although tax rate had reduced. The restaurant had increased the price before GST, so that the price post GST matches with the old price:

McDonald’s twitter handle replied to this user saying that owing to the change in rules, they had lost out on input tax credit, which had caused their costs to go up:

This is true, as explained in our previous article. The change in rate and allied rules, means that input tax credit is now a cost. But having said that, it would take an amazing level of coincidence for the costs to rise just enough to match the old selling prices to the exact rupee. Either that, or the costs had actually increased much more, and McDonald’s is absorbing these costs by not increasing prices.

The other possibility could be that the costs have not gone up as much, but by keeping their selling price post GST constant, McDonald’s is pocketing the gains of the GST rate reduction, instead of passing it on to the customers. If this is true, then McDonald’s could be found guilty of “profiteering” in the coming month.

The GST Act always had provisions to deal with such situations. The Anti-Profiteering clause, forbade businesses from gobbling up benefits accruing from GST or cut in GST rates, and asked them to instead pass on the benefits to customers. The concept is based on the principle that taxation changes should not be used by businesses to make money.

Although this clause exists in the Act, there are no detailed guidelines to enforce this clause. In the initial months, it was believed that enforcing this clause may seem draconian since businesses were just getting the hang of GST. But now the honeymoon period seems to be over.

According to a news report, the Government has kick-started the process of devising detailed rules to check for profiteering, and they rules are expected to be out next month. The broad idea is to prescribe a methodology to ascertain whether companies are passing on the tax reduction under GST and benefits derived from input tax credits to consumers. The Government seeks to draw inspiration and learn from similar practices adopted in Australia and Malaysia, when GST was implemented there.

While it is unlikely that smaller businesses would face the heat of these rules, bigger businesses like McDonald’s etc, if found to be violating such guidelines, could be in a soup. It remains to be seen how the restaurant industry responds to the GST rate cut. They may get a grace period of a few days to re-adjust their pricing strategies, but if they continue into next month, the going may get tough.

Sitting on Rs.787 crore environment cess, Kejriwal bickers with neighbouring CMs over Delhi smog

0

An RTI query filed by the RTI activist Sanjeev Jain has revealed that Arvind Kejriwal led Delhi government sat on the Rs. 787 crore collected as environment cess and used only Rs. 93 lakh, or 0.13% of amount collected, that too toward pre-tendering incidental cost related to preparation of RFID documents.

The cess, collected by the South Delhi Municipal Corporation, is remitted to transport department which can be used for environment preservation and strengthening public transport. However, Kejriwal government has been a silent onlooker as toxic smog enveloped Delhi in last two weeks.

Meanwhile, Delhi government has decided to buy electric buses with the fund collected as electric cess.

However, AAP rebel leader, Kapil Mishra called out Arvind Kejriwal on lack of financial feasibility of the same.

What is shocking is that despite being at fault, Kejriwal, who prefers running his government via Twitter instead of secretariat, is busy bickering with chief ministers of neighbouring states, M. L. Khattar of Haryana and Captain Amarinder of Punjab, over social networking site Twitter.

Owing to Kejriwal’s asinine behaviour, other chief ministers have taken to responding to him on Twitter, lest he accuses them of not reverting or cooperating.

Unfortunate that Arvind Kejriwal has singlehandedly brought down the dignity of political discourse to such low levels where he puts his personal gain over health of citizens of Delhi who actually voted him to power.

Yesterday, National Green Tribunal (NGT) had reprimanded Delhi government for not taking the pollution level seriously and rejected their odd-even exemption plea. Slamming Delhi government, NGT asked Delhi government whether it considers the toxic air quality in Delhi a joke.

Today, Delhi chief minister met Haryana chief minister in Chandigarh and they agreed to take possible steps to tackle pollution.

Meanwhile, Delhi Chief Minister continues his drama on Twitter by retweeting passive aggressive tweets blaming the governments of neighbouring states, Haryana and Punjab, for the air pollution over Delhi.

Alwar incident: gau rakshaks or gang wars?

0

Days after the incident in Alwar where 3 men were allegedly attacked by alleged cow vigilantes where one Umar Mohammed had succumbed to injuries, Rajasthan Police has said that this is a case of ‘gang wars’ and not cow vigilantism. It is reported that a shootout took place between the gang of robbers posing as ‘gau rakshaks’ and Ummar Khan and his two accomplices last Friday which led to Khan’s death.

Police has said that two robbers, including alleged mastermind Bhagwan Singh, who allegedly attacked them were interrogated where they said that both criminal groups had a run-in at Ghahenkar village on the Alwar-Bharatpur border on Friday where the two gangs exchanged fire and Ummar was killed. The police have registered a case of murder, loot and attempt to murder against Bhagwan Singh and his five other accomplices. The four other gang members are still on a run.

The police further said that a separate case has been registered against Tahir and Javed alias Jabbar. The pick-up van in which the livestock was being transported had a fake number plate of a two-wheeler. According to Police, Tahir Khan has five cases against him – three of which are under sections of the Rajasthan Bovine Animal (Prohibition of Slaughter and Regulation of Temporary Migration or Export) Act or the RB Act, while two cases are of assault. Police also claimed that Ummar Khan too was wanted in a case under the RB Act.

On 11th November, Ummar Khan’s body was found near railway tracks in Ramgarh. His family members and activists alleged that he was shot dead by cow vigilantes when he was ferrying cattle in a vehicle the previous day.

Himanta Biswa Sarma wins the Internet (and our hearts) again!

0

Social Media is a remarkable medium, and while it comes with it negatives, the positives far outweigh. We have seen moments of humanity that make our heart melt. With Sushma Swaraj helping citizens, people coming together to raise funds for others in need, Twitter, has given us some moments to cherish.

One such moment happened today, when Himanta Biswa Sarma decided to give someone a reason to smile.

This Sunday, on November 12th, ‘The News Minute’ had reported how 26 year old Abbas Sugil, a top para badminton player in the doubles category, had planned to go for a prosthetic limb from Comprehensive Prosthetics & Orthotics in Hyderabad. Sugil was born without a left hand, and even though that didn’t stop him from becoming a top athlete, he had decided it was time to get a prosthetic.

He is reported to have said. “It would help me with balancing and improving my game. It would also improve my left hand power and I could exercise and strengthen it more for my game.”

The prosthetic limb would cost Sugil Rs. 1.15 Lac, and Dhanya Rajendran of the News Minute was seen appealing for funds

It has been three days, and as well as the crowd sourcing must have been going, Abbas got a surprise when Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted pledging support

We at OpIndia spoke to Mr. Sugil Abbas after we saw Sarma’s tweet.

Mr. Abbas said, when he spoke to ‘The News Minute’, they asked him if he planned to get a prosthetic limb to better his game. He had said he would perhaps go for one in the future because he did not have the finances to do so at the moment. It is then that the crew stepped in to set up crowd sourcing for Abbas. He also clarified, that as reported, it is not a surgery that he has to undergo.

“It is not a surgery. It is just a prosthetic arm that will be fitted. I will have to then undergo physiotherapy to get used to it. The 1.15 Lac cost is for a very basic model of prosthetic arm. The good ones, that almost feel like human limb, cost about 27 Lac.”

He also added that right now, he would start with the basic prosthetic and practice, maybe a better model can be tried later.

Sugil has made the country proud consistently. He has won a total of 17 medals in National Championships and has already won 3 medals in International Championships which he started playing only last year.

Minutes after Sarma pledged help, he tweeted saying that he had already spoken to Abbas and had confirmed that the Badminton Association of India would bear the entire cost.

The initial model of prosthetic that costs about 1.15 Lac is just the beginning. We hope Mr. Sarma supports our star all the way to the 2020 Para Olympic games and beyond, with whatever his needs might be to better his game and bring glory to our country.

What the Government is doing to avoid illegal diversion of fertilizers

Last week OpIndia broke an exclusive story of how Ashok Gehlot’s brother was allegedly involved in a supply chain which was diverting Muriate of Potash to non farm use by exporting it to foreign countries. This alleged scam exposed the glaring loopholes that allow unscrupulous elements to hoodwink the system and cheat the farmers of what must be rightfully theirs.

PM Narendra Modi has promised to double the farmers income by 2022 and there are a lot of hurdles which need to be addressed for this goal to be achieved. This brings us to a major issue that is affecting welfare of farmers since decades. When a farm consumable is diverted to illegal use, dual effect can be seen on the economy.

1. That the subsidy cost is still borne by the Government due to illegal sales.

2. There will be an artificial scarcity of the products in the market thereby raising their prices which in turn affects farm output.

One of the poll pitches and subsequent claim of achievement by the Modi government has been the approval of Comprehensive New Urea Policy [pdf]. Farmers use Urea, Complexes, Diammonium Potash (DAP) and Muriate of Potash (MOP) and this policy addresses each of these nutrients and their production. This policy claims a direct saving of subsidy of around Rs. 2618 crore and indirect saving of Rs. 2211 crore for the Government.

Illegal diversion of urea and other important fertilizers is a severe problem. One simple method undertaken to address this problem was neem coating of Urea. The Government amended the Policy to allow Urea producers to produce neem coated urea upto 100 percent of production and made it mandatory to produce a minimum of 75 percent of domestic urea as neem coated, so that farmers are benefitted.

Neem coated urea is required less in quantity and still ensures higher crop yields. The most important aspect is that Neem coated urea becomes unfit for industrial use, so chances of its illegal diversion to industries are negligible. This simple policy change made sure that Urea becomes more effective and illegal activities are automatically addressed.

The government also restarted Urea producing industries which had shut down thereby increasing the supply of these farm essentials. Providing conducive environment for farmers is a key milestone in achieving the target of doubling their farm incomes.

To address diversion of MOP, the government could make Aadhaar based sales compulsory from the authorized retailers. The way it’s done at ration stores. This shall leave a trail which can be traced in case there appears a mismatch between purchases and outtake.

Apart from this government must ensure speedy investigation, patrolling and tracking of illegal activities involving diversion. This shall ensure a deterrent effect for future offenders.

There is no greater crime than cheating the farmers of this country, directly or indirectly and this government must ensure swift action against those who do. Lal Bahadur Shastri left us with the ‘Jai Jawan Jai Kisan’ slogan. And while this government has done a substantial job to protect and encourage our farmers, the path to be trodden is long and winding.

Odisha losing battle over Rosogolla to West Bengal is fake news

0

A debate has been going on for around three years now over origins of Rosogolla (however you may want to spell it, but it should sound sweet), and both West Bengal and Odisha claim that the syrupy dessert originated in their respective states. Both the states have formed committees to bolster their own claims and historical documents in support of respective claims have been put forward from time to time.

Yesterday, this debate took an interesting turn when West Bengal Chief Minister shared a ‘sweet news’ on Twitter, claiming that Bengal had been granted the GI (geographical indication) tag for Rosogolla:

A geographical indication is a sign used on products that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or a reputation that are due to that origin providing quality assurance and uniqueness. Various natural, manufactured and agricultural products are awarded these tags by the government, which as a result of the tag may also command a premium price in domestic as well as international markets.

So has the debate been settled? Has West Bengal won and Rosogulla has now been officially assigned Bengal as the geographical origin?

That’s what the entire media thought had happened after Mamata’s tweet, and soon this news was reported by everyone as victory for Bengal and loss for Odisha, leaving bitter taste in the mouth of many Odia people.

Google news snapshot over Rasagulla news
How the Indian media reported after the tweet by Mamata Banerjee (screenshot taken at 11 AM on 15th November 2017)

This ‘victory’ of Bengal over Odisha is now being reported by international media too:

But OpIndia.com brings the ‘sweet news’ to our Odia readers that the news about them losing Rosogolla to Bengal is fake. Media did not care to find the details and reported only a half-truth.

Mr. Chinnaraja G Naidu, Assistant Registrar of Trade Marks & GI, speaking exclusively to OpIndia, confirmed that the claims of Odisha losing to Bengal in any legal tussle were misleading and wrong. In fact, the Geographical Indications Registry had not issued any GI tag for “Rosogolla” at all. The tag that was issued was for “Banglar Rosogolla” (or Bangla Rosogolla).

Naidu rued the way the news was being reported, which could create ill will between communities. He also commended OpIndia for trying to find out the details and not falling for the mistake that rest of the mainstream media has done.

So in all probabilities, the mainstream media was misled by the tweet by Mamata Banerjee that did not clarify that the GI tag was given for a special variety of Rosogolla that West Bengal produces, not for the overarching term “Rosogolla” itself. Odisha too was free to apply and get a similar GI tag for their own variety, which incidentally Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has revealed that the state will now do.

Patnaik said that Odisha government is in process of obtaining GI tag for ‘Odishara Rasagulla’ which dates back to 800 years. Mr. Naidu, Assistant Registrar of Trade Marks & GI, said that their office will grant the GI tag if the documents produced in order satisfied the requirements.

“We have a civil court status, but there was no case where Bengal won and Odisha lost,” he once again clarified, hoping that the media will report the facts without causing any confusion, or worse, ill will between Bengali and Odia people.

FactCheck: Did Rahul Gandhi say he would get a machine which converts Potato to Gold?

Rahul Gandhi’s reputation has preceded him yet again. The Congress scion has given us many moments to laugh at over the past years. From claiming that Gujarat is bigger than UK, to his most recent “all cities of Bangalore” remark, Rahul’s gaffes are aplenty. With so much to his credit, it doesn’t take much to convince someone of another goof-up by him. And tonight, that goof-up came from social media.

A video became viral on social media which showed Rahul Gandhi saying something really stupid:

In the video, Rahul is seen as saying:

I will fix such a machine, that from one end you can put a potato, and from the other end you will get gold. You will get so much money you will have no idea what to do with it.

Given Rahul Gandhi’s propensity to have his foot in his mouth on a regular basis, this video was believed by many to be a real statement made by Rahul Gandhi. Some others used it to formulate their own jokes. But did he really say it?

The video is not doctored or morphed, but it has been cut short. It is actually a part of Rahul Gandhi’s speech in Patan Gujarat from a few days ago. In the speech, Rahul Gandhi was mocking PM Modi and his promises to Gujarat. One of the promises which Rahul Gandhi used, was this supposed promise of a machine which converts potato to gold.

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=za0kyeWDGjY?start=17.5]

Whether Modi ever made such a statement is not clear, but Rahul Gandhi may have used some exaggeration to make it into a good joke. This very well could be Rahul’s way of undoing his own “potato gaffe”, when last year he had said he would put up an “aloo ki factory”. Soon after this comment, Rahul makes the claim that Rs 3000 is needed to open a bank account, which is obviously a lie. So it is almost confirmed this video is not doctored.

This potato to gold joke, may or may not ring  bell with Gujarat’s potato farmers though. Only few years ago, these farmers virtually minted gold just from potatoes.

McDonald’s the worldwide fast food chain had launched its stores in India from 1996. But till 2008, all the famous french fries sold in India, came from potato shipped into India. Then something changed. By 2009, 70 per cent of the MacFries served by McDonald’s India were grown in India. And it was expected that by 2010, each and every MacFry would be Indian, and Indian fries may well be travelling the world.

McDonald’s initially had to import potatoes because of its strict quality parameters, which required a specific kind of potato, which was not easy to grow in India. It was the Gujarati farmer who decided to take up the challenge. “The Gujarati conditions, while not perfect, were good, and the Gujarati farmer was willing to try new practices if it meant making more money”, said  Devendra Kumar, General Manager, Agriculture, McCain Foods India.

Kumar started with a small demo farm of his own, showing farmers techniques of drip irrigation, which reduced water usage. This was important in a Gujarat where the water table was below 700 feet and also for the low water containing content of the variety of the potato. The Gujarat government also had a special scheme for drip irrigation which gave farmers a 50 per cent subsidy. Soon yields increased and with a fixed-price contract with McCain in place, the farmers were also protected from price fluctuations.

By 2012, McCain Foods India, had plans to double the contract farming area for the tuber to 8,000 acres in Gujarat. McDonald’s alone would increase its potato procurement in Gujarat from 30,000 tonnes to 50,000 tonnes in three years as a key ingredient for outlets across the country.

As of 2017, Gujarat’s Banaskantha district was the highest potato producing district in India, producing 17.10 lakh MT of potatoes, which is a whopping 9% of the total production in the country. Prime Minister Narendra Modi too had lauded the farmers of Deesa, Banaskantha for their potato yield and their progressive agricultural practices. The cold storage capacity in Gujarat was also boosted by approximately 6.25 lakh tonnes (1.25 crore bags of 50kg each).

As is evident, Gujarat’s potato farmers had found Rahul Gandhi’s machine which converts Potato to Gold much before he joked about it. Would they get Rahul’s joke then? Or would the joke be on the Gandhi scion?

How Sonam Kapoor attacked Sri Sri over a report in Scroll.in which misquoted him

Bollywood Diva Sonam Kapoor has had her share of gaffes on social media, but his time it was not her fault.

It all started with a story by left leaning site Scroll.in which had the following headline:

The above report itself was based on a story by the Indian Express titled “Being homosexual is ‘a tendency’, says Sri Sri Ravi Shankar at JNU event”.

Scroll.in’ story soon began to generate outrage on social media since the headline seemed to suggest that Sri Sri had somehow spoken against homosexuals.

Sonam Kapoor then jumped in and expressed her opinions on the story:

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

However, simultaneously, users on social media had picked up the spin presented by Scroll.in:

A video of the speech too was available online, which showed the exact words used by Sri Sri Tavi Shankar:

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WY9UOzNTQ_U]

A homosexual person asked Sri Sri a question, as to how he should deal with being mistreated by his friends. Sri Sri replied:

You treat yourself better, doesn’t matter how others treat you. You don’t think you are sick or something’s wrong with you. If you stand up, nobody can insult you… But if you feel weak and meek, and if you feel bad about yourself, nobody can make you feel better. This is your tendency now. Just acknowledge it and accept it, and know that this tendency is not a permanent thing. It may change. I’ve seen many men who were gay, later on turn into heterosexuals, and there are those who are normal — what are called straight people — end up being gay later in life. I want to you to focus beyond the body identity.

The full transcript showed that Sri Sri had not been speaking against homsexuality but in fact he was very understanding and supportive of the person’s orientation. This in fact is consistent with Sri Sri’s stance on homsexuality in the past:

Thus, the Scroll.in story which had selectively misquoted Sri Sri was doing great disservice to his views on homosexuality. Later in the evening, Scroll.in realized the error of their ways and updated the old story, completely changing the headline:

There was a small note at the bottom indicating the updation of the headline:

In the past too, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar has been the subject of media hitjobs, one of the most famous ones being that by Sagarika Ghose. In the current case, although Scroll.in has withdrawn the article, the damage is done. Identical headlines have already sprung on many portals such as HuffPost, MirrorNow and TheQuint:

Sonam Kapoor too has been alerted by many on social media of the truth. Will these portals change their headlines now? Will Sonam Kapoor apologize? Will Sri Sri Ravi Shankar pursue legal action on the media houses?
