Former US President Donald Trump to run for President in 2024 elections, files candidacy papers

On Wednesday, former US President Donald Trump announced his candidacy for the 2024 presidential elections of the United States and filed papers for the same.

Trump’s announcement comes days after the mid-term elections were held in the US. With Trump filing the 2024 White House bid paperwork, he becomes the first candidate from either the Republican or Democrat side to officially announce their candidacy.

“America’s comeback begins right now,” the former president told his supporters gathered in an American flag-draped ballroom at his Florida residence, Mar-a-Lago.

“In order to make America great and glorious again, I am announcing my candidacy for President of the United States tonight,” Trump said, minutes before filing his official 2024 paperwork with the US election authority.

Trump’s early announcement for the presidential run is being seen as an attempt to gain support over other Republicans who seek to represent the party.

In recent months Trump has been hinting that he might run for the President post. In his address to a rally in Iowa, Trump had stated, “I will very, very probably do it again.”

Former US President is targeting a second term in office, according to CNN, after making a statement about two Republican governors, Ron DeSantis of Florida and Glenn Youngkin of Virginia, who could challenge his position as the party’s flag-bearer in the near future.

In a post on Truth Social, Donald Trump stated, “I Endorsed him, did a very big Trump Rally for him telephonically, got MAGA to Vote for him – or he couldn’t have come close to winning.” Notably, Donald Trump lost the 2020 presidential election to US Vice President Joe Biden.

Ukraine war: Missile kills 2 inside Poland, NATO article 4 under consideration, Biden says it is ‘unlikely’ that weapon was fired by Russia

On November 15, a missile of unconfirmed origin hit Poland and killed two people. As per reports, the incident happened in the village of Przewodów, located around 15 KM from the Poland-Ukraine border. While some reports have suggested that it was a Russian missile, the official confirmation is yet to come. The United States and Western allies said in a statement that the matter is under investigation but could not confirm the missile’s origin. Notably, the Russian defence ministry has denied the allegations.

Poland’s President stayed cautious about missile origin

Notably, the Polish foreign minister had earlier said in a statement that the missile that landed in the village Przewodów was Russian-made. However, Poland President Andrzej Duda remained cautious with his words and did not confirm the missile’s origin. He said the Poland officials were not sure about the origin and manufacturer of the missile. He added that the missile was “most probably” Russian-made but was not verified. Calling it a difficult situation, Duda said, “We are acting with calm”.

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Poland said, “On November 15, 2022, another hours-long, massive shelling took place of the entire territory of Ukraine and its critical infrastructure by the armed forces of the Russian Federation. At 3:40 pm, a Russia-made missile dropped on the village of Przewodów, district Hrubieszów, Lubelskie province, and resulted in death of two citizens of the Republic of Poland. Therefore, Minister of Foreign Affairs Zbigniew Rau summoned the ambassador of the Russian Federation to Polish MFA and demanded immediate and detailed explanation.”

Poland is considering NATO Article 4 activation

A Poland government spokesperson Piotr Muller said on Tuesday that the country was verifying it there was a need to request consultations under Article 4 of the NATO military treaty. He said, “A moment ago, we decided to verify whether there are grounds to launch procedures under Article 4 of the North Atlantic Treaty.”

Muller also hinted towards military readiness. He said, “It was decided a moment ago to increase the readiness of some combat military units in Poland and to increase the combat readiness of other units of uniformed services in our country.”

What is Article 4?

Under the said article, when a member state feels threatened by another country or a terrorist organisation, it can activate formal consultations among the 30 member states. During consultations, the threat’s validity and possible measures to counter the threat are discussed. The decisions are taken unanimously.

Notably, Article 4 does not assure any action against the possible threat mentioned by the member state. For example, Article 4 was triggered last year when Turkey’s soldiers were killed in an attack from Syria. NATO initiated consultations, but no action was taken.

President Biden convened an emergency meeting of world leaders

Following the reports of the explosion in Poland, the President of the United States, Joe Biden, chaired an emergency meeting of the world leaders. Following the meeting, Biden said in a statement that it was “unlikely” that the missile originated from Russia based on its trajectory.

However, he added that the investigation into the matter is underway.

Users verified earlier by Twitter for being ‘celeb’ will lose their blue ticks if they don’t pay $8 per month, Elon Musk makes it clear

Elon Musk is serious about his $8 per month, as he has once reiterated that everyone who wants to have a ‘blue tick’ on their Twitter profile must pay this amount. Musk said this as he announced that the Twitter Blue subscription service, which allowed people to get a blue tick by paying $8 per month, will be resumed later this month.

When the Twitter Blue subscription was launched last month, users who were verified ‘naturally’ by Twitter earlier for being celebrities or notable accounts, continued to have their blue ticks or blue checkmarks on their profile.

When one clicks over the blue checkmark button for such legacy verified users, a message appears saying “This account is verified because it’s notable in government, news, entertainment, or another designated category.”

This made people assume that legacy verified users could continue to have their blue ticks, while other users could get such blue ticks or checkmarks by making a payment. However, this distinction and ‘privilege’ is set to vanish in a few months, as indicated by Elon Musk on Twitter.

“All unpaid legacy Blue checkmarks will be removed in a few months,” Musk said in a tweet when a user asked him a question about status of legacy blue checkmarks.

Musk further said that whether a person is celebrity or not should be left to users to conclude.

Twitter Blue subscription service was earlier paused after many users assumed identities of existing celebrities by getting a blue tick or verified mark by paying $8 per month. Many such users were later suspended by Twitter. Musk has now said that the subscription service will resume on November 29, 2002, and this time it will be ‘rock solid’ i.e. it may not see challenges as earlier.

“With new release, changing your verified name will cause loss of checkmark until name is confirmed by Twitter to meet Terms of Service,” Musk explained how he intends to make it rock solid.

Turkey: Syrian woman who carried out deadly blast in Istanbul had entered country without documentation few months back

Police in Turkey disclosed on Tuesday, November 15, that the woman arrested on suspicion of carrying out the deadly bomb explosion in Istanbul on Sunday is a Syrian national who had arrived in Turkey a few months prior without proper documentation. A massive explosion occurred on a busy shopping street near Istanbul’s Taksim Square on Sunday (November 13) at about 16:20 local time (13:20 GMT). At least six people have been killed and 81 wounded in the explosion.

The Turkish police added that the suspect, identified as Ahlam Albashir, entered the country without papers through the northern Syrian city of Afrin to carry out the attack in the heart of the city. She came into the country four months before the attack and allegedly acted on the instructions of the banned Kurdish militant political organization and armed guerrilla movement Kurdistan Workers’ Party or PKK.

The Turkish authorities further stated that the arrest was made after videos from around 1,200 security cameras were reviewed and raids were carried out at 21 locations. Moreover, at least 46 other people were also detained for questioning.

According to media reports, during her interrogation, the suspect told police that she had been trained as a “special intelligence officer” by the banned Kurdistan Workers’ Party, as well as the Syrian Kurdish Democratic Union Party and its armed wing.

Turkey accuses USA of complicity in Istanbul bomb attack

Turkey, meanwhile, accused the US of being complicit in the attack because the US has long had a military alliance with a Kurdish-led militia in Syria.

Following the arrest of the Syrian national, Turkey’s Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu reportedly dismissed the condolence messages from the United States, claiming that “the killer is among the first ones returning to the scene.”

“I emphasize once again that we do not accept, and reject the condolences of the U.S. Embassy,” Soylu said, according to Turkish state media publication Anadolu Agency.

The US Embassy in Turkey Tweeted Sunday that it was “deeply saddened” by the explosion, adding, “We extend our deepest condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and wish a speedy recovery for the injured.”

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre also Tweeted on Sunday, the day of the attack, that the U.S. “condemns the act of violence that took place today in Istanbul.”

“Our thoughts are with those who were injured and our deepest condolences go to those who lost loved ones,” the statement read. “We stand shoulder-to-shoulder with our NATO Ally Turkiye in countering terrorism.”

It may be recalled that a day after a deadly bomb blast tore through a crowded shopping street in Turkey’s Istanbul, killing six and wounding over 80, Turkey’s interior minister Suleyman Soylu on Monday attributed responsibility for the Sunday explosion on the Istiklal Avenue to the banned Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), saying, “our assessment is that the order for the deadly terror attack came from Ayn al-Arab in northern Syria” where he said the group’s Syrian headquarters are located.

The Kurdistan Workers’ Party or PKK is a Kurdish militant political organization and armed guerrilla movement. The PKK is designated as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States, the EU and some other countries. Since the 1980s, the PKK has maintained a deadly insurgency in southeast Turkey for Kurdish self-rule. Regularly the target of Turkish military operations, the PKK is also at the centre of a dispute between Sweden and Turkey. Turkey has been preventing Stockholm’s membership in NATO since May, blaming Stockholm for showing favouritism to the PKK.

Video of the bomb blast surfaces

The explosion occurred on a busy shopping street near Taksim Square on Sunday at about 16:20 local time (13:20 GMT). At least six people have been killed and 81 wounded in the explosion.

Videos that were shared online shortly after the explosion showed hundreds of people fleeing the street as ambulances and police rushed to the scene. The place was crowded with tourists, families and shoppers as usual when the deadly blast took place.

Authorities later revealed that among the dead were a Turkish government ministry worker and his daughter. According to news agency Reuters, five persons among those injured were shifted to intensive care in a hospital, with two of them being in a critical condition.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the perpetrators would be punished.

‘It should become an example, one cannot promote fake stories defaming the country’: Devang Dave says The Wire may face defamation suit in Tek Fog case

0

On November 14, OpIndia talked to Bharatiya Janata Party leader Devang Dave who was accused of being the alleged brain behind ‘Tek Fog’ by The Wire. Notably, ‘Tek Fog’ stories were retracted by The Wire after its stories on ‘Meta Vs The Wire‘ matter fell apart and were proven to be fake. The ‘tech expert’ Devesh Kumar had worked on Meta stories exclusively with Ayushman Kaul on Tek Fog stories. After retracting Meta stories, there was a lot of pressure on The Wire to take down Tek Fog stories which were eventually retracted by the news portal.

Devang Dave earlier demanded an apology from The Wire in a tweet. Speaking to OpIndia, Devang confirmed that a team of lawyers is working on drafting a case against The Wire. He said, “Our lawyers were already working on filing a defamation suit against The Wire. It has already proven a fake story [Tek Fog] in the public domain. However, there has been no public apology from The Wire over the matter.”

Devang said the case is not limited to an individual. He said, “It is not just a case of personal defamation. They have put a black mark on India’s journalism ethics. Using their links in the media circle, they pushed the story to media houses on domestic and international platforms, including Washington Post and others. It tainted India’s name at the international platform.”

He expressed dismay that The Wire has yet to apologise for the fake story. He said, “They not only owe me an apology but also to Bharatiya Janata Party and the people of India. Furthermore, they should apologise to all the country journalists as this case has tainted the reputation of every journalist in India. Everyone’s reputation has been put at stake.”

Devang said the lawyers are looking into different angles in the case. A critical aspect of the matter is that the fake story that the original publisher, The Wire, heavily promoted has hurt the country’s reputation. He said, “Our lawyers are also looking into how such fake stories hurt the country’s reputation, the party and journalists. They have defamed not only the country but also the entire journalism sector of the country. Our team of lawyers is working on this aspect as well. Maybe in a week, the picture will be clearer on the Sections under which the case will be filed against them.”

‘This case should become an example’: Devang Dave

He added that the case against the media house will not be limited to defamation but will include other sections such as cheating. He said, “We are not only pushing the case under Sections of defamation but also cheating and more. It should become an example that such dubious stories cannot be promoted freely without consequences.”

Devang said all those who promoted the story and even raised the matter in the parliament had not spoken a word since The Wire retracted the stories. He said, “If you remember when they ran the story, they claimed to have researched for two years. The story became a topic of discussion in the parliament as well. It was a waste of time for the parliament as well. From Derek O’Brien to Rahul Gandhi had raised questions in the house during press conferences and tweets. Their [opposition parties’] senior leaders and spokespersons, including Shashi Tharoor, raised questions about the story. Even the likes of Barkha Dutt have written on it in the past. Now all these people have to come out and speak up. The way they promoted the story, they have to apologise in the same manner.”

He added raising the matter in the parliament wasted precious time and resources. He said, “Again, it is not about an individual. In all this drama, the ethics of journalism were left behind. No one tried to verify the story before speaking about it or taking it up in the parliament. So we are working on all these aspects of how everything can be compiled and presented in the court.”

‘A black day for India’s journalism’

Devang called it a ‘black day in the history of India’s journalism. He said, “They call themselves a reputed media house. But this story became a black day of India’s journalism. They promoted blatant lies. They have defamed Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the party and the country.”

‘You cannot blame one individual for everything

Devang did not like the idea of blaming just Devesh for the mess. He said, “I read a few stories where they tried to blame Devesh Kumar for everything. Again, in this case, as well, it cannot be blamed on an individual. When you promote something as the ‘story of the year and claim the story was based on a two-year-long investigation, how can you blame one person for everything? What about your internal audits? Who approved the stories internally? How was the story approved? Answers to all these questions should come out.”

Furthermore, an official complaint to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting is in the pipeline. He said, “An official complaint will also be submitted to the Information and Broadcasting Ministry to ensure ethics are maintained in journalism.”

‘Tek Fog’ stories retracted by The Wire

In January 2022, The Wire published a series of reports claiming BJP used an underground app named Tek Fog to set a narrative on social media platforms. The media house claimed that the app had “superpowers” to takeover devices and social media accounts. They used a dubious Twitter handle as the source. Two “tech experts”, Devesh Kumar and Ayushman Kaul, claimed to have worked for two years on the stories. The reports on Tek Fog were published on domestic and international portals. The matter was raised in courts and parliament.

In October 2022, The Wire published another set of stories claiming BJP’s IT Cell Chief Amit Malviya has superpowers at Meta and he could get any post removed from Instagram. However, their claims fell flat as experts rebutted all the evidence and proved them fake. Devesh Kumar also worked on the technical aspect of the Meta stories. Later, The Wire pulled down the stories and claimed Devesh accepted fabricating documents as evidence in the case. After that, The Wire also retracted Tek Fog stories.

0

While the country is still reeling from the shock of the horrific murder of Shraddha Walkar in Delhi’s Mehrauli, the Azamgarh police in Uttar Pradesh have recovered a mutilated body of a woman in Pashchim ka Pura area of Ahraula in Azamgarh district on Tuesday. According to media reports, the police fished out the chopped hands, legs, and body of the woman from inside a well located on Durvasa-Gahaji Road in Uttar Pradesh’s Azamgarh district. The head of the corpse is still missing and hasn’t been found.

Azamgarh SP Anurag Arya said in a video byte, “Identity of the killed woman has not been ascertained so far. Efforts are being made to find out her identity after which details of age and her whereabouts would become clear.”

He added that forensic experts and the dog squad have been called and that senior officers were also probing the incident. Other evidence is also being collected from the scene after recovering the mutilated body, he claimed, assuring that the matter would be resolved very soon.

According to media reports, some locals alerted the police on Tuesday morning after they noticed the body in a well about 150 meters away from Pashchim ka Pura village. After receiving information, Ahraula police arrived at the sport and reported the incident to Azamgarh authorities.

The police said that during the initial investigation, only an undergarment was found on the body while legs and hands were found floating near it inside the well.

Notably, OpIndia reported another similar incident today wherein a dead body of an unidentified man in his 30s was found stuffed in an abandoned red-coloured suitcase outside the Railway Station in Jalandhar, Punjab at around 6 am on Tuesday, November 15. A worker had noticed the bag and alerted the railway officials.

The incidents come close on the heels of the ghastly murder of 26-year-old Shraddha Walkar who was strangulated and brutally butchered by her live-in partner Aftab Amin. Aftab had killed Shraddha and chopped her into 35 pieces which he kept in a 300-liter fridge for almost three weeks at his residence before disposing of her body parts at different locations around Delhi.

SC waives the requirement of a solvency certificate for Bhima Koregaon violence accused Gautam Navlakha to avail benefit of house arrest

0

The Supreme Court on Tuesday made way for the release of Bhima Koregaon violence accused Gautam Navlakha from Maharashtra jail by waiving the requirement of a solvency certificate for availing the benefit of house arrest.

Earlier this month, the apex court ordered the transfer of Gautam Navlakha to house arrest on account of his medical condition. But he lacked the solvency certificate required to avail the benefit of house arrest.

Navlakha’s counsel, senior advocate Nitya Ramakrishnan and advocate Shadan Farasat, informed the court that it will take a minimum of six weeks to secure a solvency certificate in respect of surety to be provided as a precondition for house arrest of the activist.

However, the Supreme Court this week did away with the requirement as the bench of Justices K.M. Joseph and Hrishikesh Roy pointed out that since it may require a minimum of six weeks to secure the solvency certificate in respect of surety to be provided as a pre-condition for the house arrest of the petitioner.

“Considering the submission and the circumstances, we deem it appropriate to waive the requirement of a solvency certificate for the petitioner to avail the benefit of our order dated 10.11.2022. It is ordered accordingly,” said the bench, in its order.

“Since other adequate security proofs such as passport, Aadhaar card, and PAN card have been provided, the trial court should not insist on a ration card as an additional proof of identity for the benefit of this court’s order,” the court further said.

On November 10, the Supreme Court allowed Navlakha to live under house arrest with his partner without using the phone. The court said he’ll be allowed to meet 2 members of his family, once a week and asked him to deposit a demand draft of Rs 2.40 lakh by name of Navi Mumbai CP, as the expenses to be incurred for constables’ deployment.

Gautam Navlakha arrested by NIA in connection with Elgar Parishad event in Bhima Koregaon

Gautam Navlakha was arrested in 2020 when 11 people were taken into custody for organising and giving provocative speeches during the Elgar Parishad event on the 31st of December 2017. The event was organised by “activists” of Kabir Kala Manch in Pune. The NIA says that the event promoted enmity between different groups of people and caste groups, leading to violence and loss of life. The NIA investigation revealed that the organisers of Elgar Parishad were in touch with leaders of CPI (Maoist), a banned terror outfit under UAPA, and were spreading the ideology of Naxalism/Maoism to encourage unlawful activity.

The evidence, according to the NIA, suggests that the CPI (Maoist) allegedly chalked out “United From and Work in the basic Masses”, under which a detailed strategy and programme to unite the struggles of various “oppressed nationalities” into a common fighting united front against the common enemy, i.e. the “Indian State”.

NIA said that in its investigation, they collected evidence that showed Navlakha and Hany babu MT were members of CPI (Maoist). They allegedly possessed “incriminating documents related to CPI (Maoist)” that are exclusively available only to the party members.

During the investigation, NIA found that arrested accused number 10, Anand Teltumbde was allegedly a senior member of CPI (Maoist) and worked in an urban area. He was in contact with other arrested accused, including Navlakha, accused Sudhir Dhawale, Rona Wilson, Surendra Gadling, Mahesh Raut, Shoma Sen, Varavara Rao, Sudha Bharadwaj, Arun Ferriera, Vernon Gonsalves, Stan Swamy, Hany Babu and other members of the CPI (Maoist) party along with accused Harshali Potdar and wanted accused Sudarshanda alias Katkam Sudarshan, secretary CRB and CCM of CPI (Maoist) party.

The ISI connection

Navlakha was also in contact with ISI agent Ghulam Nabi Fai via email and phone. Notably, Fai was arrested by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in July 2011 for accepting funds from the Pakistani intelligence agency Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and the Pakistani government. Fai reportedly did not disclose the origin of funds as required by US law. Navlakha had sought clemency for him in US court in a case of terror funding.

As per NIA, Navlakha visited the USA thrice and addressed the ‘Kashmiri American Council’ (KAC) Conference organised by Ghulam Nabi Fai. He used the email address [email protected] to stay in touch with Fai and contacted me over phone calls as well.

Navlakha allegedly wrote a letter to US Court Judge who was hearing Fai’s case for clemency. He allegedly submitted letters to the US court on Fai’s behalf. Furthermore, Navlakha was allegedly introduced to a Pakistani ISI General by Fai for his recruitment on the directions of the ISI. NIA alleged the evidence showed his nexus and complicity with ISI and Fai.

Shraddha murder case: ‘Muslim men trapping Hindu women has become culture’, says retired Jharkhand DGP

0

Hours after the story behind the brutal murder case of Shraddha Walker was uncovered, Nirmal Kaur, a 1983 batch IPS officer who retired as DGP in Jharkhand said that Muslim men deliberately entrap Hindu girls and they get huge funds for this purpose. She said that the Muslim men who kidnap Hindu girls are also provided with all the required legal support by their community.

Kaur stated her opinion while she was speaking during NDTV prime time debate on November 14. “The persons executing the entrapment of Hindu women are provided with motorcycles or heavy monetary assistance. These people are also provided with all the required legal assistance. Many similar cases are emerging these days. In a way, this is being supported by their sub-culture. Their community has started accepting and making their people believe that woman has no feelings, and no value in society. They see her as an object,” she said.

Kaur who was in the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPRD) till 2016 also said that these kinds of acts are usually executed by psychopaths who have no guilty feelings at all. “In the current case, I’ve seen some visuals of the accused and it broadly appears that he is not a psychopath but is highly influenced by their sub-culture where Hindu women or women, in particular, are seen as an object,” she noted.

She meanwhile also referred to the Jharkhand murder case where a minor girl was burnt alive by the accused named Shahrukh in Dumka and said that it was also a similar case. She further reiterated that the Muslim sub-culture supports these kinds of acts and their culture is quite widespread. She also said that Muslim boys were deliberately entrapping Hindu women and were being provided with monetary assistance for luring Hindu women. (From 21.08 to 26.05 in the video).

Shraddha Walkar murder case

On November 14, the Delhi Police solved the six-month-old murder case of Shraddha Walkar and arrested Aftab Poonawala for murdering her, and then chopping her into 35 small pieces. Aftab executed the murder on May 18 and stored her body parts in the refrigerator. He then disposed of the body pieces in Delhi’s Mehrauli forest during the next 18 days.

The accused was arrested based on the complaint filed by Shraddha’s father on November 10. He stated in the complaint that the accused and the deceased had rented an apartment in Delhi and were staying in an unhealthy live-in relationship. He said that he had always opposed their relationship as Aftab used to physically assault Shraddha.

The girl, a resident of Palghar was adamant about continuing her relationship with accused Aftab and shifted to Delhi with him. Three days after they shifted to Delhi, they engaged in a quarrel and Aftab happened to kill Shraddha. He confessed his crime on November 14 and stated that they used to fight a lot. He said that he murdered Shraddha on May 18 as she was forcing him to get married to her.

The accused has been arrested and a case under IPC section 302 (murder) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of an offense committed) have been registered. Further investigations into the case are underway.

Maharashtra: Supporters of Eknath Shinde and Uddhav Thackeray factions of Shiv Sena clash in Thane, FIR lodged

Supporters of Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and supporters of former CM Uddhav Thackeray clashed with each other in a brawl in Thane. The altercation took place on the night of November 14 and 15. An FIR has been filed against both sides after allegations were made by each party.

Following the brawl, followers from both sides rushed to Thane’s Shri Nagar police station to file complaints against each other. A number of persons allegedly attacked supporters of Chief Minister Eknath Shinde outside the police station, prompting police to employ lathi charge to scatter them.

Videos from the altercation between the two factions are making the rounds on social media. The footage shows police officers trying to control the crowd amidst the commotion, afterward, people can be seen scrambling to avoid being hit by the police lathicharge.

Notably, this occurred days after Gajanan Kirtikar, a senior member of the Shiv Sena faction led by Uddhav, joined the Balasahebanchi Shiv Sena in the presence of Chief Minister Shinde.

The Uddhav Thackeray-led Maha Vikas Aghadi government fell after Eknath Shinde and 39 other Sena MLAs defected against the party leadership in June this year. Shinde was sworn in as CM on June 30, with BJP’s Devendra Fadnavis as his deputy. The Election Commission of India handed the Eknath Shinde side two swords and a shield sign months after the split, while the Uddhav Thackeray group got Mashaal as their electoral symbol.

Shinde had defied Uddhav Thackeray for establishing an “unnatural alliance” with Congress and the NCP. Thackeray was forced to resign as Chief Minister of Maharashtra when more than 40 of the Shiv Sena’s 55 MLAs backed Shinde. Shinde, also got support from 12 of the Shiv Sena’s 18 Lok Sabha members.

Chennai: 17-year-old budding footballer dies after losing a leg in botched surgery, two doctors suspended for negligence

0

On Tuesday, November 15, a 17-year-old footballer Priya R, who lost a leg due to alleged medical negligence, passed away at a government hospital in Chennai. Priya R breathed her last at Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH), where she was shifted after surgery to repair a torn ligament in her right knee in the government’s Periyar Hospital near her home went wrong.

The 17-year-old football player was pursuing her BSc in Physical Education at a private college in Chennai. She was residing at Vyasarpadi with her family in Chennai.

According to media reports, the teenage footballer, who was in the intensive care unit at RGGGH, developed kidney and heart-related problems and succumbed to multiple organ failures today at 7.15 am.

Following the death, which her family members attributed to medical negligence, a protest was held demanding immediate action on the matter. The protests were held even as Priya’s dead body was carried out from the mortuary after the post-mortem.

M A Subramanian, the state Health Minister, confirmed that it was a case of medical negligence and stated that the two Periyar Hospital doctors who performed the initial surgery have been suspended and that legal action will be taken against them.

“It is a case of medical negligence. After the surgery, the compression band was tightened excessively affecting the blood circulation,” Health Minister Subramanian told the media.

He further stated that the family will be given a compensation of Rs 10 lakh, and one of her three brothers will get a government job.

Priya was brought to Periyar Nagar government hospital on November 7 for knee arthroscopy. Priya began complaining of severe leg pain the same evening. The physicians suggested a tight compression bandage and painkillers to relieve the pain. The next morning, she was transferred to RGGGH after doctors suspected a blood clot in her leg. Doctors at RGGGH then performed a series of tests and notified Priya’s family that the tissues in her right leg were dead and the only way to save her life was to amputate it.

On November 9, Priya’s leg was amputated. Her suffering, however, did not end there. She had to have a second follow-up surgery at RGGGH on Monday, November 14, because her condition did not improve. Doctors constantly monitored her while she was kept sedated and on a ventilator. However, she passed away the following day after the surgery.
