Unknown cyber criminals defrauded Pune-based Serum Institute of India, the world’s leading vaccine manufacturer, of Rs 1 crore. According to the authorities, the scammer allegedly identified himself as the company’s CEO, Adar Poonawalla, and sent a WhatsApp message to a director requesting that money be transferred to the accounts of several people. The communication was accepted by the director, and the funds were transferred. The police are looking into the matter.
Senior Inspector Pratap Manekar of Bund garden police station stated that a report was filed against unnamed individuals on Friday based on the complaint by the company’s finance manager Sagar Kittur. The incident occurred between 1.35 p.m. on September 7 and 2.30 p.m. on September 8.
Satish Deshpande, one of SII’s directors, received a WhatsApp message from a person who introduced himself as Adar Poonawalla, according to the report. He instructed Deshpande to transfer the funds to several bank accounts as soon as possible.
A total of 1,01,01,554 rupees was transferred online
Satish Deshpande assumed the communication was from the CEO, according to Police Inspector Mankar. Rs 1,01,01,554 was transferred online as a result of this. Later, it was proven that Adar Poonawalla had never sent such a WhatsApp message. He stated that the individuals engaged in this case are being tracked down.
According to the police, the report was filed under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 419 (cheating by impersonation), 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing handover of property), and 34 (common intention), as well as sections of the Information Technology Act. Efforts are being made to identify and apprehend the offenders, as well as the senders of WhatsApp messages and the owners of the bank accounts into which the money was deposited, the police said.
The Serum Institute of India (SII) is an Indian biotechnology and biopharmaceutical enterprise that is the world’s largest vaccine maker. SII has a factory near Pune. SII manufactures, among other vaccines, the anti-coronavirus vaccine Covishield. It is the most common Covid-19 vaccine used in India.
The Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, VK Saxena, has given his nod to a proposal by the Chief Secretary to forward a complaint to the CBI about the alleged scam in the procurement of 1000 low-floor buses by the Delhi government.
In a complaint filed with the LG in June 2022, it was alleged that the Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System Ltd (DIMTS) was appointed as a bid management consultant for the tender of 1000 low-floor DTC buses to facilitate wrongdoing.
It was also claimed that the Minister of Transport was appointed as Chairman of tendering and procurement committee in a pre-meditated manner. Reportedly, the complaint was then forwarded to the Chief Secretary on July 22.
Delhi LG has approved the proposal of the Chief Secretary to forward to CBI, a complaint received by the LG Secretariat in the matter of gross irregularities/corruption in the procurement of 1000 low-floor buses by the DTC: LG Office
On August 12, the Chief Secretary submitted his report, pointing out irregularities in the tender and recommended CBI probe into the matter. Delhi LG VK Saxena stated that a probe by the central agency was already underway and approved the clubbing of the existing complaint with the current complaint.
The Background of the case
In July last year, a three-member committee constituted by the Lt Governor of Delhi directed the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) to scrap the Annual Maintenance Contract (AMC) awarded for low-floor buses due to ‘procedural lapses’.
The committee was constituted by then Delhi LG Anil Baijal to probe the alleged scam in the procurement and AMCs of the new fleet of buses. The DTC had floated separate tenders for the purchase and AMC for the buses. Although the initial plan was to award a ₹4265 crore contract for AMC for 1250 buses, the number was reduced to 1000 buses.
The maintenance contract of ₹3412 crores was kept for 1000 buses for a 12-year period. While the purchase order was given to JBM auto and Tata Motors on a 7:3 ratio, it was expected that a large number of companies will bid for maintenance contracts.
However, the committee found that the tender conditions ensured that there were not many bidders for the AMC contract. The committee highlighted that DTC could only procure low-floor CNG buses due to the orders of the Judiciary. It added that there are a few manufacturers of such buses in the market.
The committee emphasised, “If these deviations had become necessary, DTC should have ensured that they did some kind of reasonableness test for the rates of the AMC, especially since the rates were far higher than what they were in earlier contracts. To say that they did not have the expertise is not a good enough response.”
The report concluded, “The committee, prima facie, did not come across any material to impute criminal misconduct attributable to any public official. There were only procedural lapses apparently arising out of a bonafide decision-making process. However, a greater effort for understanding the market and a greater degree of due diligence in assessing the reasonableness of bids was required compared to what seems to have been demonstrated.”
The committee comprised of IAS OP Agarwal, Principal Secretary (Vigilance) KR Meena, and Principal Secretary (Transport) Ashish Kundra.
Kochi churches on Saturday rallied in solidarity with fishermen protesting the development of the Adani port in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. The churches of Kochi-Alappuzha Archdiocese made a 17.5-kilometre-long human chain with the help of locals for 30 minutes to resist the Vizhinjam International Transhipment Deepwater Multipurpose Seaport’s construction.

Jacob G Palackappilly, Deputy Secretary General of Kerala Catholic Bishops’ Council (KCBC), said, “It is the solidarity to the protest at Vizhinjam. Their request is genuine. Fishermen are asking the Kerala Government to stop the construction works of the Vizhinjam port for the time being and make a scientific study on the impact of the port construction.”
“All the Catholic churches in Kerala support the protestors at Vizhinjam. This human chain is in the significance of that support,” he further added.
Protests against the Adani Group’s Vizhinjam International Transhipment Deepwater Multipurpose port in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala have been ongoing for some time, with fishermen leading the charge and numerous communities and pressure groups backing them. The Catholic Archdiocese of Thiruvananthapuram has now taken the lead with fishermen pressing their demands under their leadership.
The protesters’ main demand is that the construction of Rs 7,525-crore deepwater port and container transhipment facility in Vizhinjam on the outskirts of Thiruvananthapuram be halted and an environmental impact analysis be conducted.
Six other demands have been made by the protestors: (i) rehabilitating families who have lost their homes due to sea erosion; (ii) effective measures to reduce coastal erosion; (iii) providing financial assistance to fishermen on days when weather warnings are issued; (iv) providing compensation to families of those who have lost their lives in fishing accidents; (v) subsidising kerosene; and (vi) establishing a mechanism to dredge the Muthalappozhi fishing harbour in Anchuthengu in Thiruvananthapuram district.
The Kerala state government has agreed to all of the proposals with the exception of subsidising kerosene and stopping the port’s development. Additionally, it has pledged to help displaced families find housing. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan stated in the Assembly on August 23, that the demonstration in certain districts appeared to be “orchestrated”. The government, he said, was prepared for negotiations and wanted to allay the worries of the fishing community, but it was unable to agree to stop the project.
On September 10, a case of grooming jihad came to light in Uttar Pradesh. Pannuganj Police arrested a 19-year-old man identified as Sarfaraz s/o Mainuddin for allegedly raping and impregnating a 12-year-old minor girl on the pretext of marrying her. In a statement, the police said, “The girl’s uncle alleged that she is eight months pregnant. She is a student of class X and her medical examination has been done. The medical report is awaited. Things would be clear once we get the medical report.”
A Police complaint was filed by the maternal uncle of the victim against the youth on Friday evening. Based on the complaint, an FIR against Sarfaraz was filed under Section 376 of the Indian Penal Code and relevant sections of the Protection of Children Against Sexual Offences Act (POCSO).

The police officer investigating the case told Indian Express, “The survivor had been staying at her maternal uncle’s home after her mother passed away around seven years back. The accused used to visit the girl’s house to meet her uncle. Around three days back, the survivor complained of stomach ache and she was taken to hospital, where the doctors told her that she is pregnant.”

When her family members asked, the girl shared that the accused had assaulted her sexually multiple times under the pretext of marriage.
According to a Zee News report, the victim’s parents are no more and she lives with her grandparents. Sarfaraz was his uncle’s friend and often visited the house. He lured the victim on the pretext of marriage and raped her several times. As a result, the victim got pregnant but the family did not reveal the information to anyone. However, later the locals in the village came to know about it.
The victim’s family said the family of the accused offered marriage of the two on the condition that the victim would convert and get married as per Islam. However, the victim refused to accept it. A month later the alleged compromise was offered, and the family filed a complaint against Sarfaraz. OpIndia accessed the complaint filed with the Police in which the grandfather of the victim said when he tried to talk to Sarfaraz about the matter, he threatened to kill him.
The Hindu organizations in the region said similar incidents have happened in the past. They added the inspector handling the case was not sensitive about the matter. They demanded justice for the victim and threatened to protest if action was not taken.
The Police said they have arrested the accused and further investigation into the case is underway.
On social media, there has been a boycott trend against Bollywood for the past several days. The boycott trend affected even Aamir Khan’s highly anticipated film Lal Singh Chaddha, which ended up as a flop. In such a scenario, several Bollywood personalities like Sunil Shetty, Arjun Kapoor, Swara Bhaskar, and Alia Bhatt have made callous remarks trying to dismiss this boycott trend. Meanwhile, Actor Shreyas Talpade strongly opposed the arrogant statements made by Bollywood actors like Alia Bhatt during the Ganesh Chaturthi special program of News18 Lokmat.
Shreyas Talpade advised actress Alia Bhatt, who has been engaged in controversy owing to statements such as “If you don’t like me, don’t watch me,” to respect the audience.
When asked what would he wish from Lord Ganpati this year, Shreyas Talpade answered, “I would wish from Lord Ganesha to give wisdom to Bollywood celebrities giving arrogant statements over ‘boycott Bollywood trend’. Right now, I don’t appreciate the statements coming from the Bollywood industry regarding the boycott calls.“ Shreyas on Alia Bhatt’s ‘If you don’t like me, don’t watch me’ statement said, “It is very wrong to say that if you do not like me just do not watch my movies. This way you will end up alienating yourself from the audience. An actor exists only till the audience likes him.”
He also used a metaphor to support his perspective. According to Shreyas Talpade, if your lover or better half is unhappy for some reason, will you tell him/her to leave? Instead, we will try to persuade them not to leave and regain their trust by apologizing for a mistake.
Alia Bhatt’s controversial statement
Alia Bhatt’s recent statement sparked controversy ahead of Brahmastra’s release. During the interview, Alia Bhatt said, “I will not always defend the protest. People who don’t like me don’t watch my film. I can’t do anything for this.”
Brahmastra: A ‘king-sized failure’
Notably, despite all of the hype around it, Karan Johar’s film Brahmastra, which is presently running in theaters, has failed to impress cinema critics and reviewers. Taran Adarsh, a well-known film reviewer, reviewed the film on Twitter on Friday. He dismissed the film entirely, calling it a “king-sized failure.” Adarsh gave the Ayan Mukherjee-directed film a two-star rating, stating that it was ‘poor on the material.’ He said the film was “all gloss, no soul.”
Taran Adarsh was not the only one who was underwhelmed with the film. Many other film critics and media outlets gave the film terrible ratings ranging from 1.5 to 2.5 stars out of 5.
This ‘boycott Bollywood trend’ has affected Aamir Khan’s ‘Laal Singh Singh Chaddha,’ Akshay Kumar’s ‘Raksha Bandhan,’ and Ranbir Kapoor-Alia Bhatt’s ‘Brahmastra’ in recent months.
Following his release from jail after obtaining bail in the cases against him, film critic Kamaal Rashid Khan made a cryptic tweet, saying that he is back for retribution. In the tweet, KRK wrote, “I am back for my vengeance.” The tweet was made at 08:11 AM on Monday morning.
A magistrate court in Mumbai’s Borivali granted Kamaal R Khan bail on Wednesday in the case involving his controversial tweets from 2020. Khan was arrested on August 29 for tweeting disparaging remarks against Rishi Kapoor and Irrfan Khan. Rahul Kanal, a Yuva Sena member, filed a complaint against KRK in April 2020.
On Thursday, September 8, the son of KRK took to Twitter to request assistance, claiming that his father’s life is in danger. Faisal Kamaal said in a Twitter post on September 8 (Thursday) that his father was being tortured at the Mumbai jail where he was held. KRK’s son claimed that his father’s life was in jeopardy and asked for help from Bollywood stars Riteish Deshmukh, Abhishek Bachchan, and Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
Because he is our life. I request public also to support my father to save his life. We don’t want him to die like #SushantSinghRajput#WeStandWithKRK
Numerous social media users suspected a plot behind KRK’s recent arrest in a 2020 case as the film critic famous for lampooning Bollywood actors and directors was given bail after 9 days in jail. The arrest of KRK, who had been criticising Aamir Khan’s Lal Singh Chadda, which became one of the worst-performing Bollywood films in recent memory, was assumed to be connected to Karan Johar and Ranbir Kapoor’s new release Brahmastra.
Some Twitter users said that KRK was imprisoned shortly before the release of Brahmastra because the directors and Karan Johar were terrified of his honest assessment of the film. Others stated that Karan Johar intended to gain from his upcoming movie Brahmastra, but this would not have been feasible if KRK had shared his review before the film’s release. So, in order to prevent him from evaluating the film, a plan to have him arrested was devised, according to a few Twitter users.
It remains to be seen if Kamaal R Khan posts his review of Brahmastra now after his release or not.
On September 10, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi said that India should have a weak Prime Minister and a ‘Khichdi’ (multi-party) government following the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Owaisi claimed that such a government would work for the benefit of the weaker sections of society as a powerful PM only helps the powerful people. He was speaking at a press conference where he not only attacked Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) but also other political parties.
While hitting out at BJP, Owaisi claimed that the ruling party is suppressing minorities and weaker sections of society. Speaking to news agency ANI, he said, “When we speak of the development of minority communities and justice for them, nonsense is spoken against us. This is hypocrisy in a way that those posing as experts of secularism today will decide who is secular and who is communal. The country is watching them. BJP has 306 MPs, yet the prime minister complains that the system does not give me freedom.”
BJP has around 306 MPs but PM still complains that the system doesn’t allow him to work… what more power do you want to be able to help poor, farmers & youth? It’ll be better that a ‘Khichdi’ govt forms& a weak PM comes to power, so that the country’s poor can benefit: A Owaisi pic.twitter.com/7TroOYObA6
He added, “What more power do you need than being a two-time elected Prime Minister? It would be better if ‘khichdi government’ is formed and a weaker prime minister is elected so the voice of weaker section is heard.”
“When someone weak becomes prime minister, the weak will benefit. When a strong person becomes prime minister, the powerful gain. This should be the effort for 2024 (elections). Let’s see what happens,” said Owaisi.
During his conversation with the media, Owaisi talked about his plans for the upcoming Gujarat Assembly elections that his party is planning to contest “with all its might”. Owaisi hit out at Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for keeping mum on the controversial release of eleven convicts in the Bilkis Bano case. He claimed AAP was not different from the ruling BJP in the state of Gujarat. AIMIM is planning to contest the Gujarat Assembly elections that will most probably be held in December this year. He added, “The most important issue is inflation, unemployment, lack of civic infrastructure.”
Further, Owaisi talked about Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and attacked him for switching sides. He also pointed out how West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee recently praised RSS. He said, “Nitish Kumar became CM while being with BJP. He was with BJP during the Godhra pogrom. He left them in 2015, went back in 2017, and contested 2019 polls to make Narendra Modi win and he has again left them now. Mamata Banerjee was earlier in NDA and in a recent letter, she praised RSS.”

Owaisi also extended his support to Rahul Gandhi over a controversial meeting with Tamil Pastor George Ponnaiah. He said, “I have not seen the video but the nation has no religion. The beauty of this country is that the people have different faith and beliefs and we celebrate every god here.” A video of the meeting with the controversial Pastor went viral on social media where Rahul Gandhiasked him, “Jesus Christ is a form of God? Is that right?” to which the Pastor said, “He is the real God. God reveals him(self) as a man, a real person…not like Shakti…so we see a human person.”
Six sites in Kolkata were searched by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), which is looking into a purported case of fraud using a mobile gaming application. On Saturday, 10th September 2022, an ED team raided the offices of businessman Aamir Khan in Kolkata’s Garden Reach area with the help of bank authorities. The raids were conducted in connection with the fraud app named E-Nuggets, through which thousands of people had lost huge amounts of money.
The ED recovered a huge stash of cash during the raid, and the counting of the cash continued till late in the evening. According to reports, the team seized more than Rs 18 crores after the counting of the currency notes was over. Cash counting devices were brought in to determine the precise quantity of cash collected during the raid. Several trunks arrived at the businessman’s home to transport the seized funds. In the wake of the ED raid at the businessman’s home, central forces have increased their presence in the region.
UPDATE | #Kolkata: #ED raids underway at a businessman’s premises in connection with a money laundering case. Over 50 crores cash recovered and being counted by ED officials during the searches in Kolkata related to mobile gaming app fraud case. Counting is still on. https://t.co/gBYSwcZOJupic.twitter.com/fQJLOALiHm
Bundles of notes were stored in various places in Aamir Khan’s house, including under the bed. The house located at Garden Reach where the stash of cash was found belongs to Nasir Ahmed Khan, father of main accused Aamir Khan.
Aamir Khan and other people were suspected of scamming users of the mobile game software E-Nuggets, and Federal Bank officials filed a complaint against them under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). About the mobile gaming app, ED said in a press release, “During the initial period, the users were rewarded with the commission and the balance in the wallet could be withdrawn hassle-free. This provided initial confidence among users, and they started investing bigger amounts for a greater percentage of commission and a greater number of purchase orders.”
The ED described the suspected fraudsters’ method of operation in that press release. It said, “Further, after collecting the handsome amount from the public, all of a sudden, the withdrawal from the said App, was stopped, at one or the other pretext viz. system upgradation, an investigation by LEAs, etc. Thereafter, all data including profile information was wiped off from the said App servers and only then the users understood the ploy.”
This is the third incident of huge stash of cash found in Kolkata in recent times. Earlier, the ED had recovered more than Rs 50 crore in cash and other valuables from Arpita Mukherjee, a close aide of TMC leader and former minister Partha Chatterjee. It is believed that the cash is proceeds of the SSC recruitment scam in education department when Partha Chatterjee was the minister.
On September 9, 2022. (Friday), Armaan, a 22-year-old man, was killed while four others were injured in an incident of stabbing in northwest Delhi’s Mangolpuri area. The victims were identified as Armaan, Monty alias Moin Khan, and Fardeen, and were taken to the Sanjay Gandhi Memorial hospital in the vicinity, police said. The doctors at the hospital declared Armaan as brought dead.
According to the deceased’s relatives, the murder was motivated by Armaan’s participation in the Ganesh Chaturthi idol immersion procession, while the police are saying old enmity, and revenge were the reasons behind it. According to reports, the perpetrators are also members of the Muslim community. So far, three accused have been apprehended.
How did Ganesh Chaturthi get linked to the murder?
While reporting the incident, many media houses referenced Ganesh Chaturthi in connection to Armaan’s murder. They reported that Armaan was stabbed to death during the immersion of Ganesh idol in Mangolpuri. Deceased Armaan’s father and brother had alleged that he was killed because of participating in the celebrations.
According to reports, Salim, Armaan’s father, told the media that the accused suddenly attacked Fardeen (Armaan’s cousin) after seeing gulaal (coloured powder) on his face. The enraged youths accused him of not being a devout Muslim. “What kind of Muslim are you, to put gulaal on your face?” yelled the accused before attacking Fardeen.
“After this, an altercation broke out between them,” Salim said, adding that when Armaan heard the noise, he went out to inquire what had happened. There he found that his brother had been stabbed. Armaan immediately grabbed Farhaan and was rushing him to the hospital, when the accused pulled him from behind and dragged him inside a house, and stabbed him too.
Fardeen, his brother, basically reiterated what his father had said. “They asked me why I wasn’t offering Namaz after noticing gulaal on me. They started abusing me, this led to an altercation between us. They then took out a knife and started attacking me. I also retaliated by pushing them. Many boys from the accused’s gang gathered around us. They then stabbed my brother Armaan,” Fardeen recounted what transpired leading to the death of his brother.

According to media reports, the youths who were attacked were identified as Armaan, Monty alias Moin Khan, and Fardeen while the perpetrators were Shahrukh, Sheikh Sameer, Vineet, Saif, Karan Badshah, Ajay, Sabir, and Shabir. On the basis of the statements of the deceased’s father and brother, Vinod Bansal, national spokesperson of Vishwa Hindu Parishad and other Hindu organizations raised questions on the alleged ‘Ganga-Jamuni tehzeeb’.

Minor bike accident was the root cause of the dispute
In another video, Fardeen, brother of the deceased Armaan, is heard saying that the root cause of this whole dispute is a minor bike accident. He said, “I was going on the vehicle, and I used the horn but the accused did not move even after seeing me.” According to Fardeen, the bike touched the hand of one of the accused which is when the accused started gathering people on the spot. Fardeen also said that the accused would often roam around in groups and tease the girls. Fardeen also repeated the fact about the gulaal colours played during the Ganesh Utsav.
Moin, another injured, said the number of attackers was between 10 to 15. Moin has also cited a bike accident as the reason for the controversy. The injured Moin is the cousin of the deceased Armaan.
Amidst all these statements, a video of the murder incident has surfaced. This video has been made from the opposite house to the one where the incident took place. The video maker is also crying as she saw the attack. At the same time, the other woman tells her, “He is not somebody from your house.”

Police calls it an old dispute between the families
The Delhi Police has denied any communal angle to the incident, calling the entire controversy a battle for supremacy between the two families. In the Barabanki district of Uttar Pradesh, a fight between Hindu and Muslim children escalated to such an extent that the family of the Hindu child was forced to migrate from the area.
The Hindu victim’s family held up posters informing about their decision to migrate from the region. The posters read that they are forced to leave the village because of harassment from Muslims. The pictures of the hapless Hindu victims holding up posters announcing their migration have gone viral on the internet.
On the other hand, the police say that there is no harassment of the Hindu family in the village and proper action will be taken if any complaint is received.
The dispute started with a fight between children
The incident took place in the Mohsand, a locality of Khirkiya Purwa village under the Kursi police station area of Barabanki in Uttar Pradesh. Photos of a Hindu family with posters claiming exodus are going viral on social media. A fight between the kids from two families has reached elders. On September 2, two children of the locality, Ajay and Adil, had a fight. Adil hit Ajay. After the incident, when the victims complained to Adil’s family, the accused Muslim family’s members barged into the victim’s house.
The Hindu family was assaulted by the Muslims
The Hindu family member Harinam Prajapati has accused Muslims of obscene behavior and abuse. Besides, the Hindu victims also accused the Muslims of assaulting them and threatening to kill them. The action was also taken by the police in this case under section 151. The victim’s family also put up posters of the exodus. The posters read, “We are forced to leave the village because of Muslims. Save us and our livelihood.”

‘Will take an action if a complaint is filed’: Police
Superintendent of Police Dr. Akhilesh Narayan Singh said, “A week ago, there was a dispute between the children, which reached the elders. At that time, the police had also taken action under 151. That village has 60 percent Hindus, while 40 percent are minorities. So far, no such thing as harassment of the family by minorities has come to light yet. If any complaint comes to the police, action will be taken.”
OpIndia also contacted the Kursi police station. The station officer Ram Chandra Saroj informed that it is not an exodus case. He said, “It is like any other dispute over minor reasons. It started from a fight between two kids in those families. This village is also a Hindu-majority place. The said Hindu victim, in this case, has not given any complaint about the forced exodus so far.”
