Jharkhand: Mosque collapses due to subsidence of coal mine area at Sijua, angry locals stop mining work

A part of the mosque in Dhanbad district of Jharkhand collapsed due to major subsidence on Wednesday (December 1) night. The mosque named Ada Masjid was built in 1981 and it is situated at Sijua in the Modidih Colliery area under Jogta police about 22 km from district headquarters.

The mosque spread over a 1000 sqft area has now become unusable due to damage. Luckily, no injury and casualty were reported in the incident. But it has left the residents of Sijua under fear. The locality is dominated by Muslims.

In the incident, the wazu khana, four toilets, the place of azan, main gate of the mosque, courtyard and a 50 feet tall minaret caved in.

“Incident took place around 8 PM. People heard a loud noise and in less than 10 minutes a part of the mosque collapsed. It created a huge ‘goaf’ (crater). Around 200 people had offered namaz at this mosque at 5 PM. Luckily, none was inside the mosque when it collapsed,” a resident told the OpIndia.

A team of BCCL led by safety officer Aish Ahmad reached the site along with a police team and barricaded the subsidence site. They also instructed people not to venture near it. BCCL has also started to fill up the crater.

Aish Ahmad said, “some mining activity has been carried out in the area by private miners before the nationalisation of coal mines and subsidence might have taken place due to that.”

Seven years back a small mosque at this locality had collapsed due to a landslide.

On being contacted, Dhanbad SP Sanjeev Kumar confirmed the incident. “A part of the mosque collapsed but people were safe. Modidih is the part of the coal mining area where cases of underground fire and goaf due to subsidence take place. Necessary steps are being taken by the authorities,” said SP.

After the incident, angry local residents accused the Bharat Cocking Coal Limited (BCCL) of negligence and they also forced a private coal excavator, Hilltop Hirise Private Limited, to stop mining work.

But the fact is that the BCCL that undertakes mining work in Modidih where the mosque is situated, had declared the area as dangerous. The coal company had also chalked out a plan for the rehabilitation of people living in the mining area. But due to local politics, the plan so far has not materialised.

Bollywood Actor John Abraham has clarified the title ‘clash’ with Akshay Kumar’s upcoming movie titled ‘GORKHA’ directed by Sanjay Puran Singh Chauhan and said that his team had no right to the title as they had not officially registered the title. It is believed that the ‘Madras Cafe’ actor is working on a Gorkha regiment story with an army background.

After Akshay Kumar announced his movie ‘Gorkha’ in October and shared the first look of the film, there have been some speculations about the title of the movie. As per reports, the Anand L Rai production team had won the race for the title. John Abraham has stated that Aanand L Rai is the rightful owner of the title. He said, “One needs to register the title. This has happened to me in the past when I have lost the title despite being on the waiting list. In this case, Aanand L Rai justifiably has the title and is going forward with his film. We had no right to it.” adding, “I am happy that the movie is being made with my favourite person, Akshay Kumar.” 

Akshay Kumar starrer movie “GORKHA” written by Sanjay Puran Singh Chauhan, Anil Pandey and Neeraj Yadav would revolve around war hero Major General Ian Cardozo, who was an officer of the Gorkha regiment of the Indian Army (5th Gorkha Rifles).

Criticism of Judges can amount to conspiracy: Andhra Pradesh HC denies bail to 5 for social media posts against Judges

On Tuesday (November 30), the Andhra Pradesh High Court claimed that criticism of judges can amount to conspiracy and attack on the institution of the Judiciary. The court made the observation while rejecting the bail application of 5 people, accused of making objectionable posts about High Court and Supreme Court judges on social media.

The matter was heard by a Bench led by Justice D Ramesh. The Andhra Pradesh High Court noted that the allegations made against the judges fell within the purview of scandalising the court. On the directions of the court, the CBI had filed cases against the accused under Indian Penal Code (IPC) Sections 153-A (promoting enmity between different groups), 504 (provocation), 505-2 (Statements creating or promoting enmity), 506 (criminal intimidation) and Section 67 of the Information Technology Act 2000.

They were arrested in October 2021, following which the accused moved the High Court to appeal for bail. Their petition was opposed by the Central Bureau of Investigation, who sought their police custody. The central agency argued that the accused could influence the witnesses if they were released on bail. The Court however rebuked the CBI for taking a year to arrest the accused but noted that there might be influential people behind the conspiracy.

“On perusal of the postings made by all the persons against some of the Judges of the High Court as well as Apex Court can be construed as a conspiracy against an institution. Large number of persons have made postings on social media and continued to put postings from April 8 2020, even till today,” the Andhra Pradesh High Court ruled. It further added, “That shows that these persons are putting postings in social media, not against the individual judges. It should be construed as an attack on the institution. The allegations made against the judges come within the purview of scandalizing the Courts.”

The Court was not satisfied with the purpose to grant bail to the accused, given that the investigation was underway. Interestingly, the Andhra Pradesh High Court had recently directed social media platforms to remove ‘abusive content’ against Judges. In this regard, they have asked the Registrar General to hand over the links of the derogatory posts to Facebook, Twitter and other intermediaries so that they can be removed within 36 hours.

Pakistan Embassy in Washington faces shortage of funds, salaries not paid for 4 months

Pakistan Embassy in Washington had kept several of its contractual employees without salaries due to lack of funds, according to reports. At least five locally hired contractual employees were left without the payment of their monthly wages since August 2021. One of the distressed employees who had been working in the Embassy for ten years resigned in September after facing delays and non-payment.

As per reports, the financially hit contractual workers of the Pakistan Embassy worked in the Consular section dealing with the services of visa, passport, notarization, etc. These contractual workers of the Embassy were paid salaries in the range of 2,000 to 2,500 dollars per month, which was paid out of Pakistan Community Welfare (PCW) fund.

Reportedly, the PCW collapsed because of the COVID crisis in Pakistan as the funds of the PCW were used for buying ventilators and medical equipment during the pandemic. ‘Sources’ claim that the Embassy was forced to borrow money in order to mitigate the situation. Another reason given by sources for the lack of funds and the non-payment of salaries was that the Pakistan government has witnessed a digital transformation and that the visa services were being handled with the help of NADRA (National Database and Registration Authority).

Notably, the unpaid workers of the Pakistan Embassy had written to the Pakistani ambassador in the month of October who in turn requested the Pakistan Foreign Ministry to solve the problem. Reports claim that the Pakistani Ambassador had eventually secured the funds last week.

Pakistan Embassy spokesperson said, “while we always endeavour to disburse salaries to our staff on time, there are instances when due to longer than usual time in the processing of remittances from Pakistan and certain budgetary constraints, results in delay in disbursement of salaries to the staff.”

Non-Payment of Salaries in Serbia by Pakistan Embassy

The Pakistan Embassy in Belgrade, Serbia had earlier taken to Twitter and expressed its disappointment with the Pakistan government for the non-payment of its dues for the last three months. The embassy had also shared a song by Artist Saad Alavi to prove its point. The tweet said, “With inflation breaking all previous records, how long do you expect @ImranKhanPTI that we goverment official will remain silent & keep working for you without been paid for past 3 months & our children been forced out of school due to non payment of fees Is this #NayaPakistan?”

However, later the tweets were deleted, and the foreign ministry of Pakistan had claimed that the account was hacked and the messages were not posted by any embassy employee.

Union cabinet approves ₹5,100 crore project to manufacture 5 lakh AK-203 rifles in Amethi, to replace the INSAS rifle

The union government has approved the production of over five lakh AK-203 assault rifles by an Indo-Russian joint venture plant in Amethi in Uttar Pradesh. The Cabinet Committee on Security headed by PM Modi has approved the ₹5,100 crore project to manufacture the riffles at Korwa in Amethi to boost self-reliance in defence manufacturing in the country, along with upgrading the main fire-power of the Indian armed forces.

The approvals came just before Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to India on December 6. Putin is visiting India for the annual summit with PM Narendra Modi.

The 7.62 X 39mm calibre AK-203 rifles will replace the INSAS rifle currently in service, which was introduced decades ago and needs to be replaced soon. The AK-203 rifles are lightweight, robust and easy to use modern assault rifles, which will enhance the combat capabilities of the soldiers. It is expected to enhance the operational effectiveness of the Indian Army in counter-insurgency/counter-terrorism operations.

The project will be implemented by a special purpose Joint Venture named Indo-Russian Rifles Private Ltd (IRRPL), a joint venture between Indian and Russian companies. The venture was announced in March 2019, in response to the Defence Ministry’s Request for Information (RFI) for procurement of 6,50,000 assault rifles of 7.62×39 mm calibre under the ‘Make in India’ program.

Indo-Russian Rifles Private Ltd is a joint venture among Advanced Weapons and Equipment India Limited and Munitions India Limited of India, and Kalashnikov Concern and Rosoboronexport of Russia. Indian companies own a controlling stake in the company, and Major General Sanjeev Sengar has been appointed as the Chief Executive Officer of the company, which is the first incident in decades where a uniformed officer was appointed as the CEO of a company.

The Kalashnikov rifle plant in Amethi will generate business opportunities for a number of industries to supply raw materials, components and related services. This will lead to the generation of a large number of new employment opportunities. “The project marks a significant stride towards making Uttar Pradesh a key contributor to the ascendant defence manufacturing prowess of India,” govt sources said.

NCB suggests states to transfer drug cases with inter-state ramifications to it, Nawab Malik objects questioning the motive of the agency

After a momentary lull, NCP spokesperson and state skill development minister Nawab Malik has returned to his old job of hitting the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) as he has objected to NCB advising Maharashtra Police to transfer some of the drug cases to the agency for investigation.

Malik launched a fresh Twitter war against NCB and questioned the motive and intention of the agency. He said that the NCB has no right to infringe upon the rights of state government when there is no provision in the NDPS act to do so. He said that NCB must have some ulterior motives. Malik has also shared the letter sent to the police by NCB chief Satya Narayan Pradhan.

It seems that other than Maharashtra, the NCB which is a central authority on drug-related matters, has asked other states also to transfer preferably three to five cases to the agency having inter-state/ international ramifications. NCB has asked the states to transfer the cases to “carry the investigations to a logical conclusion, especially in terms of identifying and unearthing the entire network. This would be in the interest of the State as well as the country as a whole,” the letter dated November 24 reads.

The NCB asked the state police to identify such cases and inform the agency preferably by December 5. The letter refers to the recently concluded DGP/IGP conference where Union Home Minister Amit Shah expressed his desire that every state should identify a few such important cases for a comprehensive investigation.

Although even remotely not connected with the correspondence of NCB with Maharashtra Police DG Sanjay Pandey, Malik is annoyed and agitated. He said that NCB should explain the criteria of the top five cases, whether two grams, five grams, three tonnes seizure of the drugs,” he said.

“Or it will be based upon the mass publicity,” the minister said. he has not explained the context of the mass publicity. It can only be guessed that he might be referring to the drug case of Aryan Khan, the kid of the Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan. Awab Malik’s son-in-law Sameer Khan was also caught in a drug case.

Malik claimed that the anti-narcotic cell of Maharashtra Police have taken more actions compared to what NCB did. He asked why NCB having its own unit wants transfer of cases. He said whether NCB wanted to end the state’s autonomy or extort money.

However, the NCB chief did not respond to phone calls for his comment, but the letter has properly explained the context that it is being done on the directive of Union Minister of Home and Affairs, Amit Shah.

Amit Shah reviewed drug scenario

On November 17, the Union Home Minister had reviewed the drug scenario in the country and also the functioning of NCB. In the meeting, Shah had emphasised the need for central and state narcotics crimes investigation agencies to work in very close partnership and coordination.

The Home Minister had “stressed upon comprehensive investigations of significant drugs seizure cases having pan-India and international implications to get to the larger organised crime and terror networks/syndicates which, if not busted effectively and in time, eventually impact national security,” the letter reads.

In the letter, NCB said that Shah appreciated the role of the State Police in fighting against the drug menace. “However, it was felt that in many cases the ring leaders and financiers, especially those with multistate operations and presence in drug trafficking evaded the clutches of law, posing a serious challenge for all Drug Law Enforcement Agencies in India, including the state police,” letter read.

Letter not a direction but an advisory

Malik is trying to kick off a fresh controversy even if the letter is advisory in nature. “It is suggested that States may, where found appropriate and expedient, consider handing over such cases to NCB to undertake the task of trying to unearth the entire network,” the letter is self-explanatory in nature.

Media report quoted highly placed sources allaying objections raised by the minister. Sources said that the letter was merely a reminder to the state to consider taking help of the NCB as the latter was a competent agency having the wherewithal to investigate inter-state and international linkage.

Hours after the brutal lynching of Sri Lankan manager Priyantha Kumara in Sialkot in Pakistan over allegations of blasphemy, the killers confessed to their crime on camera.

In a video that was shared on Twitter by journalist Hamid Mir, the accused men were heard as saying, “Paper pe Ya Hussain likha tha. Usne woh phad ke faink diya. Humne apne foreman ko kaha hai ki yeh galat hua hai. (inaudible) humne apni management se baat ki hai. Hum sab mil kar ikaththe hue hain. Aur uspe tel daal ke jala diya hai. Jo bhi aisa karega. Hamare rasool ke naam par jaan bhi kurbaan (from behind). Hamare hadiz mein hai ki jo bhi nabiyon ki shaan mein gustakhi karega uska sir tan se juda kiya jayega. (chants of nara e takbir, Labbaik ya Rasool allah and allah hu akbar) huzuraat ke naam par jaan bhi kurbaan (from behind).”

They further added, “Mohammad Kalam naam hai mera. Farhan. Mohammad Farhan. Paper pe ya hussain likhe tha. usne aake phada hai. Phad kar (dustbin) mein daal diya hai. Woh humse bardasht nahi hua. Humne us se baat ki hai. Woh keh rahe hai ki galt hai. Humne kaha yeh na aage na manager se baat karein. Isne jo bhi kiya hai galt kiya hai. To woh keh rahe ki hum baat karte hain aage. Abhi bhi baat honi hai tab tak humne kaam nahi karna. Kehte hain ki theek hai. Fir humne ladke liye hain. Aur bhi saath aaya. Fir humne na usko yahan par jala diya hai.“

The loose translation of their statement goes as, “The name of Hussain was written on the paper. He tore the paper and threw it. I had informed my colleague that it was wrong. (inaudible) I had even talked to the management. And we had assembled together for the cause. We poured oil and set him on fire. Anyone who does will be meted out the same treatment. We are ready to sacrifice our lives for Prophet Muhammad. It is clearly mentioned in our Hadith that we must behead those who insult our Prophets (chants of Nara e Takbir, Labbaik ya Rasool Allah and Allah hu Akbar). Ready to sacrifice life for Prophet (from behind). My name is Mohammad Kalam. Farhan. Mohammed Farhan. The name of Hussain was written on paper. He came and threw it in the dustbin. We could not tolerate it. We have talked to him. We had requested to talk to the manager about his wrong deeds. We decided to not work. We brought in men and set him on fire.”

Pakistan forced to act against Islamists after pressure from Sri Lanka

In a tweet, Namal Rajapaksha wrote, “The brutal murder of Priyantha Diyawadana by extremist mobs in Pakistan is incomprehensible. While I appreciate PM @ImranKhanPTI’s promise to bring those responsible to justice, we should be mindful that this could happen to anyone if extremist forces are allowed to act freely.” Rajapaksha is a Sri Lankan MP and son of the incumbent Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksha.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Sugeeshwara Gunaratna had also directed the Imran Khan-led government to take legal action into the matter. Following diplomatic pressure from the Sri Lankan government, Pakistan was forced to act on the Islamists who killed Priyantha Kumara. As per reportsr, a team of 10 was deployed by the Punjab police to nab the accused and submit a report to the Inspector General within 48 hours. The police have so far nabbed primary accused Farhan Idrees, who was earlier seen in the viral confession video.

With the help of CCTV footage, the police were able to apprehend 100s of people for partaking in the heinous crime. On Saturday (December 4), the cops arrested the second accused named Talha, responsible for inciting the mob.

While the opposition dreams to bring down the Modi government, well before the 2024 elections, regional parties already seem divided in deciding the way forward and the leadership that they might fight 2024 under. While Mamata Banerjee has gone all guns blazing against the ineptitude of the Congress party, Shiv Sena in its mouthpiece has today asserted that the opposition parties need UPA to win 2024.

In its mouthpiece, Shiv Sena has said that while Mamata Banerjee has criticised the Congress party in Mumbai, the opposition needs UPA to win 2024.

“Where is the Congress-led ‘UPA’ in the country? This question was asked by Mamta Banerjee after coming to Mumbai. This question is priceless in the current situation….But the opposition needs UPA. Forming a second alliance parallel to the UPA is like strengthening the hands of the BJP”, Shiv Sena said in Saamana.

Essentially, while the Shiv Sena acknowledged the ineptitude and absence of Congress-led UPA, they also said that the opposition needs UPA because forming a second alliance like the UPA would mean strengthening the hands of BJP.

Mamata Banerjee had recently lashed out at the Congress party and the Congress-led UPA on the whole questioning their absence in the fight against the Modi government. In an interaction with the civil society in Mumbai, Mamata had said, “If one does nothing and is abroad half the time, then how will one do politics? For politics, there should be continuous endeavour.”

The West Bengal Chief Minister’s statement was primarily seen as a dig at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who recently vacationed abroad. Mamata Banerjee had also claimed that the UPA no longer exists.

On Wednesday, December 1, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee courted controversy with her “What’s UPA” remark. 

To a question from the media on her meeting with Sharad Pawar in Mumbai and whether she believed the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader should lead the UPA (United Progressive Alliance), Banerjee snubbed the Congress by exclaiming: “What UPA? There is no UPA now? What is the UPA? We will clear all issues. We want a strong alternative,” she said.

Mamata making these remarks to bargain better with Congress with Shiv Sena playing mediator?

It is indeed true that the opposition would ultimately need Congress if they hope to even make an electoral dent in 2024. While victory would still allude them, as Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad had recently observed, if the opposition has any hope to even arrest the further rise of BJP at the centre, they would have to fight as a block.

With the new alliance shaping up consisting mostly of regional parties, it stands to reason that at the national level, they would lack not just the money to fight 2024, but also the organisational strength. Further, there are several ego clashes between the cadre of regional parties. For example, the NCP cadre and the Shiv Sena cadre have been involved in fights before after the alliance was formed.

While the Shiv Sena decided to abandon its Hindutva ideology and its stance against NCP, Congress, its cadre is still deeply rooted in the ideology. Owing to that, the cadre of NCP and Shiv Sena hardly see eye to eye.

Owing to such differences, the regional parties would certainly need a national force to unite them all.

Given this, Mamata Banerjee’s criticism of Congress was baffling. The only explanation to Mamata Banerjee’s comments, if we ignore the hubris, could be that she is using these comments as a bargaining chip.

With the Congress party going electorally downhill, Mamata Banerjee may be thinking that she could emerge as the face of the opposition in 2024 and these comments could be used as a bargaining chip with the Congress to let her lead the third front.

Shiv Sena, on the other hand, perhaps recognises the fact that at the national level, none of these regional parties would be able to pull in the organisational strength needed to take on a behemoth like the BJP. Further, at the regional level, Shiv Sena’s existence is dependent on Congress. Therefore, Shiv Sena was attempting to play mediator between Congress and Mamata Banerjee, at the same time, buttering up the Congress, especially Rahul Gandhi.

With the opposition divided already, one has to wonder how they can even hope to take on the Modi government given that it would seem that they cannot even decide who should lead the opposition front.

Billionaire Mukesh Ambani has praised the efforts made by the Indian government to introduce data privacy and cryptocurrency bills and stated that every country has the right to establish and safeguard its strategic digital infrastructures. Mukesh Ambani has acknowledged that the steps taken by the government in the direction of protecting the privacy of its citizens as forward-looking and backed the policies and regulations undertaken by the government.

While speaking at the InFinity Forum, hosted by International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA), Mukesh Ambani said, “India is putting in place the most forward-looking policies and regulations,” adding, “We are on the verge of introducing data privacy bill, and the cryptocurrency bill. I think we are on the right track”.

Mukesh Ambani also pointed out that India has built the digital infrastructure required to enable the transformation to a digital society with digital frameworks such as Aadhaar, digital bank accounts and digital payments. He said, “Data is indeed the ‘new oil’. But the new oil is fundamentally different from the traditional oil. Traditional oil was extracted only at select places thus, it created wealth only for some countries. In contrast, the new oil — that is Data — can be generated and consumed everywhere and by everybody. It has the potential to create value equitably, across sectors, across geographies, across economic classes,” 

Notably, the Reliance Chairman Mukesh Ambani had made the statements at a time when India is about to bring a new bill in Parliament that will consider cryptocurrencies as a financial asset with the safeguarding of small investors. The legislation might set a minimum limit for investments in digital currencies but ban their use as legal tender.

Furthermore, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has called for collective “global action” in order to regulate and control cryptocurrencies and related digital technologies saying, “Even as we are thinking about at a national level, there should simultaneously be a global mechanism through which we are constantly monitoring the movement of technology, so that whether it is your cryptocurrency, whether it is a tech-driven payment system, data privacy…”

The Uttar Pradesh police have taken to Twitter to warn a social media user, Dharam Jeet Pandey, against spreading rumours regarding the incident where a sub-inspector rank cop serving at Pilibhit Kotwali, Vinod Kumar, was assaulted by a group of men on December 3 in Niralanagar, Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh.

The official Twitter handle of UP police to cross-check any news related to that UP Police Tweeted in Hindi which roughly translates to: “On 03.12.21, sub inspector Vinod Kumar, who was posted in Pilibhit for government work, was coming to Lucknow. He was beaten up by the accused after he collided with a parked vehicle on the road to save the MOSA rider. 4 accused were arrested after registering a case. Please don’t spread false rumours.”

The Uttar Pradesh police also shared a link where the UP Police had given exact details of what transpired on the night of December 3. It also had the video byte of the Additional deputy commissioner of police, north zone, Prachi Singh giving details of the incident.

The Uttar Pradesh police were responding to a Tweet by a social media user going by the handle @DharanJeetPand3. Replying to a report published by the Hindu daily ‘Hindustan’ about the aforementioned incident, Dharam Jeet Pandey had Tweeted in Hindi: “Takkar daroga mar rha h…arrest aadmi ko kr rhe h…yeh h”, roughly translated as “The cop collided… but instead, the man was arrested…this is).

The user was essentially criticising the Uttar Pradesh police for being biased. He implied that the Uttar Pradesh police implicated an innocent person since a cop was involved in the incident, despite knowing it was his mistake.

In what transpired, Vinod Kumar, who was in his uniform, was slapped multiple times by a man in full public in Uttar Pradesh’s Lucknow. After a video clip capturing this moment went viral on social media, four men, including the one who slapped the cop, were placed under arrest.

A 27-second video clip shows Ashish Shukla, who is one of the accused, slapping the uniformed police officer twice in front of hoards of onlookers. While assaulting the cop, Shukla could be heard saying: “policegiri dikhayega”, loosely translated as (you will show and tell us what policing is).

ACP (North Zone) Prachi Singh in a video byte had said the policeman in question was returning from the office of the minority commission. He was travelling in a four-wheeler. When he reached Niralanagar, a bike suddenly came in front and in order to save him, his car hit wrongly parked cars in front of a hotel. Following this, a group of five men rushed out of the hotel and assaulted the policeman. The group even tried to rob the cop of his valuables and mobile phone. Based on the complaint filed by SI Vinod Kumar, the accused identified as Ashish Shukla, Priyank Mathur, Pravendra Kumar and Pranjul Mathur were arrested under relevant sections of the IPC, informed Singh.
