Shiv Sena demands union minister Nitin Gadkari to be brought in to resolve the Maharashtra stalemate

The constant squabble between the two allies BJP and Shiv Sena over the chief ministerial post and power-sharing formula in Maharashtra refuses to subside even after almost two weeks since the election results were announced on October 24.

Now, in another desperate attempt to end this imbroglio with the BJP, Sena has today written to RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat seeking his intervention and asking Gadkari to initiate negotiations between BJP-Sena.

Kishore Tiwari, one of the advisors of Shiv Sena supremo Uddhav Thackeray has specifically requested Union Minister Nitin Gadkari to placate the two sparring parties by brokering a deal between them, claiming that Nitin Gadkari has the potential to iron out the issue within two hours.

Tiwari said: “I have written a letter to RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat to initiate and send Nitin Gadkari for negotiations. Nitin Gadkari will be able to resolve the situation within two hours.”

Claiming that Gadkari is being “sidelined” by the BJP, Tiwari said that if the party or Amit Shah authorises Gadkari to intervene, he can resolve the impasse in two hours.

Tiwari, the founder of Vidarbha Jan Andolan Samiti, an NGO which highlighted large-scale suicides by farmers in Maharashtra and especially those from his Vidarbha region, had switched over from the BJP to the Shiv Sena ahead of the Assembly polls.

Meanwhile, Sena’s MP Sanjay Raut, on the other hand, reiterated today that the state’s next chief minister will be from his party. “The decision on Maharashtra will be taken in Maharashtra, the chief minister will be from the Shiv Sena,” Raut told reporters in Mumbai.

Flummoxed over their deportment on this impasse, Shiv Sena has been swaying both ways. While on one hand, Sena has been insistent on adhering to what it says is a prepoll agreement of 50-50 formula wherein both the parties will have a chief minister for two and a half years each, it was previously seen softening its stance on the demand for rotational chief ministers and 50:50 power-sharing, blaming the media for raking up the issue.

Moreover, in its desperation to get its grip on Maharashtra, Sena had purportedly sent out a number of feelers to Sharad Pawar’s Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) to threaten the BJP into submission.

Today also through their latest editorial published on Saamana, Shiv Sena once again was seen taking a jibe at the BJP chief minister candidate Devendra Fadnavis by calling him an ‘outgoing chief minister’.

While Sena has been moving back and forth on the power-sharing formula, the larger party of the coalition-the BJP has been adamant on continuing with Devendra Fadnavis as the state’s chief minister.

Multiple high-profile meetings in New Delhi and Mumbai on Monday, including one between NCP chief Sharad Pawar and Congress president Sonia Gandhi, failed to give any indication of breaking the 11-day-long deadlock over government formation in the state.

Kartik Aryan starrer film Pati Patni Aur Woh which appears to normalise marital rape is an assault on our sensibilities

Move aside, Kabir Singh, new ‘Abhinav Tyagi’ from ‘Pati Patni Aur Woh’ is the new poster boy of cringe. For the uninitiated, trailer of the film ‘Pati Patni Aur Woh’ starring Bhumi Pednekar, Kartik Aryan and Ananya Panday was released on Sunday. What one assumes would be a collection of done and dusted ‘married-man-lusting-after-another-woman’ jokes format, quickly turns into an assault on sensibilities as soon as Aryan’s signature monologue ends.

The film which releases on 6th December, talks about Abhinav Tyagi, who followed his father’s wishes and got married to Vedika Tripathi as per his wishes as well. Except, now he has a colleague, Tapasya Singh and feels like he is ‘jailed’ in his married life. The usual things that stopped being funny in 1990s.

Abhinav Tyagi dabbles through his wife at home, who he’s perhaps bored of, and this new colleague, who he lusts after. At around 1 minute 10 second into the trailer, Kartik Aryan playing role of Abhinav Tyagi has another monologue with a few innuendos. It goes something like this:

Biwi se sex maange toh bhikhari, biwi ko sex na dein to hum atyachari. Aur kisi tarah jugaad laga ke sex haansil kar le na toh balatkari bhi hum hai. Apni khushi apne haath mein hoti hai (makes a fist), Rizvi. If I ask my wife for sex, I am a beggar and if we deny sex to wife, we are cruel. If somehow we manage to have sex with them despite this, then we are also accused of being rapists. Our happiness is in our own hands, Rizvi.”

Rizvi replies how this ‘happiness in own hands’ (reference to masturbation) is something that is valid before one gets married, right?

Read: Explained – the Marital Rape law debate for the rest of us

Because marriage is all about sex, right? And of course, let us also normalise marital rape on the celluloid while we are at it.

Before anyone comes to me with daggers asking me to not read too much between the lines in a movie which is nothing but fiction, let me remind you of another movie which was recently released and normalised domestic abuse and toxic relationships. Ashwani Kumar aka Johnny Dada, a ‘Tik Tok star’ murdered a girl he was obsessed with after he found out she was going to marry someone else. He later committed suicide. He was heavily influenced by Kabir Singh and would regularly post dialogues from the movie on his social media platform. Kabir Singh, other than the fact that it was criminally boring, also glorified and normalised abusive behaviour in relationships.

Unfortunately, bad jokes on ‘wife’ and ‘marriage’ are not the only thing that feels like assault on your sensibilities. Without getting into the legal discussion about the laws regarding marital rape or how the laws must be framed so that they are fair to both men and women, the normalisation of marital rape itself is troublesome. Kartik Aryan normalising marital rape, while a majority of Indians live in denial of marital rapes, while spouting ‘jokes’ is yet another step in normalising abusive behaviour. That too when Indian law does not recognise marital rape as a crime.

Nirbhaya gang rape: Convicts not to file mercy petition, to seek withdrawal of notification that had granted them 7 days to file petition

In a new twist to the Nirbhaya rape case, the three convicts presently lodged in Tihar Jail and Mandoli Jail have refused to file their mercy petitions with the President against their death sentences.

According to the reports, the convicts of Nirbhaya gang-rape have neither filed their appeal for mercy petition to the President of India nor approached the Supreme Court to get a stay against their execution.

Instead, AP Singh, the lawyer representing convicts Vinay Sharma, Akshay Kumar Singh and Pawan Kumar Gupta, said that the three convicts had written to their jail authorities, seeking withdrawal of the October 29 notification on several grounds, which had granted them seven days time to file mercy pleas with the President against their execution. The fourth convict Mukesh is represented by a different lawyer.

Lawyer AP Singh said that in the case of Akshay Kumar Singh, a review plea was yet to be filed in the apex court. While a petition regarding Pawan Kumar Gupta’s claim that he was juvenile is pending at the Delhi High Court. He also said that the option of filing curative petitions is still being availed.

The jail authorities had informed the Nirbhaya gangrape case convicts that they had exhausted all legal remedies and were only left with the provision of filing a mercy petition against the death sentence before the president.

Reportedly, the time for filing mercy petition is now over as on October 29, the Tihar Jail authorities had handed over the notice of execution to the convicts while notifying them that they had a window of 7 days to apply for ‘mercy petition’ against their capital sentence with the President.

As the time to file mercy petition is nearing, the jail administration will now start preparing to hang the culprits by sending an application to the lower court.

The rapists and murderers were apprised that in case they do not choose to file a mercy petition, necessary legal proceedings will follow as per the law. The four convicts may soon be sent to gallows in this case as they have refused to file a mercy petition.

The four accused were found guilty of rape, murder and destruction of evidence in September 2013 and sentenced to death by hanging. The Delhi High Court upheld the sentence, noting that the crime, which prompted widespread protests over sexual crimes against women in the country, fell into the judicial system’s “rarest of rare category” that allows capital punishment.

The convicts then appealed in the top court but the Supreme Court rejected the convicts’ appeal stating that they had committed “a barbaric crime” that had “shaken society’s conscience,” and maintained the death sentence of the four convicts who had been charged with rape and murder. In July 2018, the Supreme Court rejected a review petition by three of the convicts. There were two other persons involved in the horrific crime. One of the accused Ram Singh had commited suicide, while the sixth person was a juvenile who had already spent the maximum two year term applicable for minors in a juvenile home and is leading a free life now.

Internet sensation Ranu Mondal gets angry on being touched by a fan, netizens react to her arrogance

Internet sensation Ranu Mondal, who had hogged the limelight after a video of her singing ‘ek pyaar ka nagma hai’ at the railway station went viral over the net, is once again breaking the net, but this time for the wrong reason.

Even after becoming a singing sensation, Mondal for all this while appeared extremely polite and humble, until in the shocking video which surfaced recently the singer was seen getting angry at a female fan for touching her at a supermarket.

In the video, Mondal was seen behaving rudely with a lady fan who spotted her buying something at a supermarket. The excited fan held her hand and asked for a selfie. Ranu got angry at the lady fan and asked her why she held her hand like that. First, she tells the woman to stay away and then taps her shoulders, apparently mimicking the woman, and asks what is the meaning of doing so. However, the fan didn’t say anything and maintained a smile on her face.

The social media users were quick to react to her behaviour. The internet has flooded with messages like: “Shameful, aukat se zyaada kisiko mile to yehi haal hota hai” and more, calling out Mondal’s overbearing attitude and arrogance.

Mondal became a star overnight after receiving adoration from several social media users. Ranu’s singing was loved so much that she also got a chance to make her Bollywood debut through music composer Himesh Reshammiya.

Ranu Mondal has now become a Bollywood singer. She has recorded two songs for Himesh Reshammiya’s next movie, Happy Hardy And Heer. Meanwhile, there are unconfirmed reports that filmmaker Hrishikesh Mandal will be making a film on the life of Ranu Mondal soon.

Shiv Sena mouthpiece Saamana takes a dig at Devendra Fadnavis, calls him an ‘outgoing’ chief minister

In the latest editorial published on Saamana, Shiv Sena took a jibe at the Maharashtra chief minister candidate Devendra Fadnavis by calling him an ‘outgoing chief minister’. Known for its mordant critique, the article on Saamana asserted that Fadnavis was at “loss of words” after his recently concluded meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

The article also held a dim view of the worsening environmental conditions in Delhi. Referring to the meeting between Amit Shah and Devendra Fadnavis held in Delhi, the Sena mouthpiece took a swipe at Fadnavis saying that “he is trying to procure lifeline from a state where people are wearing masks to survive”. In a clear dig, the editorial mentioned that getting a “majority in Maharashtra is akin to getting a plane to land in Delhi in zero visibility”.

“The outgoing chief minister, who came back to Maharashtra from the polluted Delhi, will have to take the next step forward. The step taken by him will determine the future course of action,” the article read. However, it also contended that in the next 5-6 days, there will be better clarity on whose is forming the government in the state.

Devendra Fadnavis had gone to Delhi to meet Amit Shah and discuss the impasse that has hit the state of Maharashtra amidst the tussle between the BJP and Shiv Sena over the post of Chief Minister. Following his meeting Shah, Fadnavis assured that a BJP government will be formed in the state and he will take the oath as the Chief Minister of the state.

The political parties- Shiv Sena and the BJP have been alliance partners for about 30 years and contested the Maharashtra Assembly elections jointly. Ever since the results came out on October 24, the two allies have been constantly squabbling over the power sharing formula and chief ministerial post. While the larger party of the coalition-the BJP has been adamant on continuing with Devendra Fadnavis as the state’s chief minister, the Sena has been insistent on adhering to what it says a prepoll agreement of 50-50 formula. The Sena claims that according to 50-50 formula agreed upon by the BJP, both the parties will have a chief minister for two and a half years each. However, Fadnavis has refuted saying no such agreement was deliberated.

The Sena has today written to RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat seeking his intervention to end the current imbroglio with the BJP. This request has come after RSS accused Sena of “faking innocence” in its power struggle with the BJP. The letter was written by one of the advisors of Shiv Sena supremo Uddhav Thackeray in which he urged Bhagwat to end the rift between the two alliance partners. He has specifically requested Union Minister Nitin Gadkari to placate the two sparring parties by brokering a deal between them. Earlier today, RSS had slammed both the BJP and the Sena, describing them as “Vikram and Betal” and asserted that they should think about the people of Maharashtra.

Pakistan: Men dig up grave of a woman and rape the dead body a day after burial

0

In a barbaric incident in Pakistan, a group of unidentified men dug up the grave of a woman in a graveyard in Karachi’s Landhi Town area and raped the dead body.

According to the reports, the shocking incident came to light after the family of the deceased were informed that men had dug up the grave of the woman and raped the body, who was buried just a day earlier. As the family members were alerted of this heinous crime, a large number of them, including the neighbours reached the Ismail Goth graveyard.

However, the deceased’s family said that they did not wish to file any cases regarding the horrible incident. The family further said the undertaker responsible for the maintenance and upkeep in the graveyard told them that a dog had removed the slab from the freshly-made grave.

The family, however, do not believe that a dog would be capable of removing the slab from a grave, adding that the grave-digger vanished from the graveyard later.

Reportedly, it is still unclear how many men were involved in this shocking incident. On the other hand, the police have gathered evidence from the site of the crime and confirmed that the grave-digger was nowhere to be found. The police have begun their searches to look for and detain the grave-digger.

The late woman’s relatives informed the police that they did not wish up to take any legal action over the matter but stressed on their appeal that such an incident should not take place in the future.

In 2011, a gravekeeper named Muhammad Rizwan from North Nazimabad, Karachi was arrested for necrophilia. He was arrested after he confessed to raping 48 female corpses. Rizwan was caught running away after desecrating a corpse. He had caught the attention of nearby grave diggers and some other people.

Sushma Swaraj’s husband Swaraj Kaushal shares why the former union minister refused to go abroad for kidney treatment

Former external affairs minister and BJP stalwart Sushma Swaraj breathed her last on the night of August 6 after suffering a cardiac arrest. Months after the remarkable leader left for her heavenly abode, her husband and former MP Swaraj Kaushal took to Twitter to pen down a memoir of his wife. He shares why the former minister chose AIIMS for her kidney transplant and refused to go abroad for her treatment.

In December 2016, Sushma Swaraj underwent the transplant, a nearly five-hour-long surgery, at AIIMS with a kidney donated by a living unrelated donor. The surgery was conducted at the cardio-thoracic centre by a team of doctors including AIIMS director M.C. Mishra, surgeons V.K. Bansal, V. Seenu and nephrologist Sandeep Mahajan.

Swaraj Kaushal recollects how late former Union minister Sushma Swaraj insisted on undergoing the surgery at New Delhi’s All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) even as doctors there were not ready to perform it, saying people will lose faith in “our doctors and hospital” if she travelled abroad for treatment. She fixed the date of her surgery and told Dr Mukut Minz: “Doctor saheb, aap sirf instrument pakadaiye, Krishna meri surgery aap karenge” (you just hold the scalpel, Lord Krishna will do my surgery).

Swaraj Kaushal recalled that she was smiling in an easy chair just a day later. “Just a day later, she was smiling in an easy chair. She said ‘if we go abroad, people will lose faith in our Doctors and hospitals.’ She treated her surgery as a minor operation. She gave all credit to the AIIMS doctors who are best in the world, dedicated sisters and the staff.

In another Tweet, Kaushal thanked PM Modi and wrote that he and his wife would be eternally ever grateful for the unfailing support and all the help the Prime Minister extended towards them during those crucial days.

He wrote that the Prime Minister gave them the hospital wing meant for the PM and was in constant touch with the doctors and with Sushma Swaraj. “There was nothing that should have been done and was not done. As a result, she was fully recovered and back to work. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you Prime Minister”, Tweeted Swaraj Kaushal, who is a lawyer and former Mizoram governor.

“We should trust our doctors. We should have none of these Enquiry Commissions. That deters our brilliant doctors from operating on the VIPs. We salute our doctors in AIIMS. Nothing can match their competence and commitment,” wrote Kaushal hailing the brilliance of the dedicated doctors in India.

Clearing the misconception on the success rate of kidney transplant in our country, the practising Indian criminal lawyer wrote: “The best Surgeon abroad does only 30 transplant surgeries in a year. Dr Mukut Minz has done over 3,500 transplants. Dr V K Bansal of AIIMS has done over 1000 and Dr Sandeep Guleria does 300 a year. The success rate is as high as the best in the world. Be proud of our medical talent”, he said.

The stateswoman had stayed away from public life for a while after her surgery and announced during the Madhya Pradesh assembly elections last year that she will not contest 2019 national polls on health grounds.

Swaraj had redefined the relationship between the people and the government. Using social media to its fullest extent during her term as External Affairs minister in the first Modi government, she had reached out and helped countless Indians stranded in other countries. Often, a mere tweet calling for help was enough for her to reach out and provide help in the most difficult of scenarios.

Political leaders across the political spectrum had expressed their sadness and offered condolences to Swaraj’s family. India grieves the demise of a remarkable leader, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had tweeted after the death of former union minister and BJP veteran Sushma Swaraj at Delhi’s AIIMS hospital on August 6, 2019.

Delhi Police vs Lawyers: Police personnel carry out protest outside Delhi police HQ over repeated assaults by lawyers

0

Personnel of Delhi police hit the streets outside the city police headquarters ITO today protesting against the hooliganism unleashed by lawyers in the last few days. They were wearing a black band on their arms to condemn the attacks on their ranks. The protests come a day after a policeman was assaulted by a group of lawyers near Saket district court in Delhi. A video of the assault had gone viral in which the lawyers can be seen raining blows on the policeman.

Last week, a row over parking dispute devolved into a violent altercation between lawyers and policemen at Tis Hazari court. A police car was set ablaze and 20 more vehicles were vandalised during the clashes. 2 Cops were suspended by the Delhi High Court and a judicial probe was ordered.

The Delhi Commissioner of Police Amulya Patnaik addressed the police personnel protesting at the Police Head Quarters (PHQ) in ITO saying, “Some of the incidents in the last few days in the country’s capital have been handled very well by the forces. The situation is gradually improving. I appeal to all to maintain peace. It’s testing time for us. We need to fulfil the responsibility of maintaining and assuring law and order. We are guardians of law and people expect us to assure law and order in the capital.”

Several IAS officers took to Twitter to condemn the continued attack on policemen. Former DGP of Jammu and Kashmir, Shesh Paul Vaid tweeted that he is saddened to see the plight of policemen who spend their entire lives protecting civil society and maintaining law and order are treated such inhumanly.

Karnataka officer, D Roopa tweeted that the repeated attack on police officers is a mockery of the system and wished that strictest action should be taken against the hooligans who take the law into their hands.

DGP Andaman and Nicobar Island, Dependra Pathak slammed lawyers saying that they are lumpen elements in the garb of Black Coat who pose a threat to social orderliness in Delhi. He further said that fear must be instilled among these mischief mongers.

Even the IPS association issued a tweet denouncing the treatment meted out to police officers in Delhi. Condemning the attacks on police, it declared that it stands in solidarity with the police personnel subjected to physical assault and humiliation.

According to the Home Ministry sources, Lieutenant Governor has been entrusted with the responsibility of diffusing the situation as the ITO, where Delhi police headquarters is located, has come to an absolute standstill amidst unprecedented protest staged by the police officers against the hostile behaviour of the lawyers.

After KRK, another Indian decides to take on Twitter legally for suspending his account

In 2017, ‘Deshdrohi’ actor and Bollywood critic Kamaal R Khan, popularly known as KRK, had threatened legal action against micro-blogging site Twitter for suspending his account and not restoring it. It was suspended after he gave bad review of Ajay Devgn starrer film ‘Shivaay’. He had even sent a legal notice to Twitter though his lawyers.

KRK had said that his suspended Twitter account left him in agony and was so depressed he had even threatened to commit suicide over his suspension.

Almost two years later, another Indian has threatened to take Twitter to courts. According to a report by ThePrint, senior Supreme Court lawyer Sanjay Hegde has decided to take the social media platform to court. In fact, quite the lawyer that he is, he has even decided to move international court to restore his Twitter account if need be.

Hegde’s account was suspended last week over alleged violation of Twitter rules and he had appealed to Twitter to restore his account. On Tuesday morning, however, Twitter said his account will not be restored.

As per Twitter, to create a safe space for users, if an account indulges in hateful conduct by uploading sensitive content on profile or header image, name, bio, location or website, it is violation of rules. Hegde told ThePrint that he is left with no other option but to migrate to other platform and to take Twitter to court over his suspension of account. He is examining all options including taking this matter to international courts.

Hegde’s account has been suspended multiple times in last few weeks. Earlier in October, he claimed his account was suspended for having the Nazi resistance image as his header image. His account was restored after the image was deleted. Next day, as per him, his account was suspended for a 2017 tweet where he had shared a Gorakh Pandey poem titled ‘Hang Him’.

Meanwhile, about a month after Twitter suspended his account, Bollywood critic and actor Kamaal R Khan’s account was restored. Thereby, Twitter hinted that KRK is not some 2 Rs person. However, it remains to be seen how much worth Twitter attaches to Hegde.

‘May Allah forgive my sins,’ Pakistan pop singer Rabi Pirzada, who threatened to suicide bomb PM Modi, quits showbiz

Pakistani singer Rabi Pirzada has ‘quit showbiz’ after her private nude videos were leaked last week. The private videos and images of Pirzada were allegedly leaked soon after she had criticised Pakistani Army spokesperson Asif Ghafoor on Twitter.

While she announces that she is quitting showbiz, Rabi Pirzada also sought forgiveness for ‘Allah’ for all her sins. Rabi took to Twitter and wrote, “I, Rabi Pirzada quitting showbiz. May Allah forgive my sins. And soften the hearts of people in my favour.”

Rabi Pirzada is the Pakistani singer who had gained social media attention in India by claiming to release snakes and crocodiles on PM Modi after the abrogation of Article 370 and recently had worn the popular Pakistani costume, the ‘suicide vest’ to ‘threaten’ PM Modi. She is apparently a pop singer with a considerable fan following in Pakistan.

Pirzada’s nude photos and videos were leaked in the early hours of Friday. Interestingly, Pirzada had criticised Pakistan Army’s spokesperson (DGISPR) Asif Ghafoor, popularly known on Twitter as ‘Ghafoora’, over the latter’s defence of a much-trolled item song in Pakistan Army sponsored movie ‘Kaaf Kangana’ by Pakistani actress Neelam Muneer.

The item song of the Pakistan Army sponsored movie was heavily criticised for its content and lyrics. However, Asif Ghafoor had come out in defence of the song claiming that in the movie’s context, it is an Indian girl dancing. Her video had purportedly flooded Pakistani internet and the singer was brutally trolled on social media. However, many of her fans had taken to Twitter requesting social media users not to share or discuss the nude videos. There were claims that since she had criticised DGISPR, Ghafoora may be behind the ‘leak’.

Nevertheless, very soon, Pakistani Twitter users also started claiming that the videos were leaked from Pirzada’s mobile phone by her ex-boyfriend who apparently had her iCloud password. Some handles were also claiming that she had sold her phone recently which contained some private videos and the leak might have come from there.

Pirzada had maintained silence over the issue so far until she decided to quit the show business yesterday. She has, however, still not mentioned this as the reason for her resigning for the entertainment industry.
