Mumbai attains new global standards, can drink water straight from tap: Report

A hydraulic engineer of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Ashok Tawadia has stated that the locals in Mumbai, Maharashtra, will now be able to drink water directly from the taps.

According to the continued research, the average 0.7 per cent of water samples collected daily across Mumbai between April 2018 and March 2019 tested positive for Coliform bacteria, a group of microorganisms present in water bodies that indicate water may or may not be fit for drinking. The average of which in Mumbai tap water is far better than the WHO norm of 5% limit.

However, there is a word of caution attached to this advantage. In order to receive potable water, the locals need to ensure the cleanliness of underground and overhead water storage tanks. “Our water is potable and if residents can ensure their tank are regularly cleaned, they can drink water straight from the taps”, claimed Ashok Tawadia.

In the past, international agencies have noted that the water available with the BMC’S master Balance Reservoir at Bhandup was considered to be one of the purest all across the world. However, the water that reached the locals was inferior in quality due to the distribution system.

This has been worked on and since December 2018 ‘pure’ water has been flowing across the city’s 7,000 km water distribution system. Tawadia stated that according to the samples collected since December, the content of E coli is less than 1 per cent. The number dropped further in March as the content fell down to 0.7 per cent. According to international standards, less than 5 per cent of water samples can contain coliform bacteria.

The transformation in the city’s water quality started in 2012-13 after a severe outbreak of waterborne diseases in the C ward (Marine Lines, Kalbadevi, Pydhonie, etc).

Firstly, the steel water pipelines used for surface distribution were converted into underground concrete water tunnels. Mumbai today has 14 such underground tunnels. Secondly, in slums, the numerous bunches of water pipelines laid close to sewage lines were removed and replaced with a single six- or nine-inch pipeline and connections were provided close to tenements.

To assist the project, the additional municipal commissioner Rajiv Jalota joined hands with the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI). The water testing laboratories were upgraded and the BMC adopted the membrane filter technique. The testing of the samples is now done by the health department instead of the water supply department.

Around 358 water sampling points were identified by the water supply department in 257 water zones of Mumbai. Each point provides water to 10,000 people. The samples were collected from 36 outlets of the 37 reservoirs of the city. In all, 125 water samples are collected every day.

The BMC collects around 36,000 samples through the year and the percentage is calculated once annually. From 17 per cent, it is now remarkably down to 0.7 per cent.

When Manmohan Singh blamed RSS for 1984 Sikh genocide

During the 1999 Lok Sabha elections, senior Congress leader and former Prime Minister, who was contesting from South Delhi constituency had blamed the RSS for 1984 Sikh genocide. Pinning the blame on the RSS, Dr Singh had said that Congress had no role in the Sikh pogrom and that the ideological wing of BJP, i.e RSS is being the 1984 Sikh carnage.

To defend his claim that Congress had no involvement in the organised killings of Sikhs, Manmohan Singh cited how despite him being a Sikh, the Congress government at the centre in 1984 awarded him with Padma Vibushan. He argued that he wouldn’t have received the coveted award if the Congress government at the centre had an institutionalised anti-Sikh prejudice. Dr Singh also claimed that the First Information Reports(FIRs) lodged at several police stations in Delhi during the Sikh riots revealed the involvement of many RSS men in the riots.

However, contrary to Dr Singh said, another report from 2003 states that the minorities panel chief lauded the commendable services rendered by the RSS in protecting the beleaguered Sikhs during the organised massacre in 1984. Addressing a condolences meeting for late RSS chief Rajendra Singh, minorities panel chief Tarlochan Singh said, “The RSS and Sikhs have always fought shoulder to shoulder. Sikhs can never forget how RSS activists protected them during the partition and the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.” He also added how at the peak of the Khalistan movement, RSS had asked Hindus to treat Punjabi as their mother-tongue.

Recently, Congress advisor and mentor to Congress president Rahul Gandhi, Sam Pitroda stirred a furore by trivialising the horrendous massacre of Sikhs in 1984 by saying ‘Hua to Hua’. Sensing the snowballing outrage caused by his remarks, Rahul Gandhi himself had to apologise for his comments, albeit appearing to whitewash the 1984 organised Sikh genocide.

While condemning Pitroda’s unseemly remarks, Rahul also mentioned in his post how the erstwhile Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, his mother Sonia Gandhi have already apologised for the “needless tragedy”. Far from being a tragedy, the events that led up to the massacre denote that it was hate crime driven against a particular community, on orders of the Congress leadership, fuelled by Rajiv Gandhi.

Video: Madhya Pradesh farmer exposes the farm loan waiver sham, calls Rs 2 lakh loan waiver a lie

A Madhya Pradesh farmer confronted Congress leader Jyotiraditya Scindia in a public meeting in Bhopal, and alleged that farmer loan waiver as promised by the Congress government hasn’t been fulfilled yet.

The video shows the farmer protesting while Scindia is speaking, he complains that his loans haven’t been waived and that the police had raided his house thrice over the due payments of the loan.

Reportedly, the farmer repeatedly tries to speak through the mic amid chants of ‘Jyotiraditya Zindabad’, he was stopped by the Congress leaders and asked to sit down. He tried to speak again when Scindia brought up the issue of loan waiver promise. Scindia assured him that he would get a chance to speak, but the farmer still didn’t get to speak.

The Congress had won the Assembly elections in on Dec 12th, 2018 in Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh. They’re biggest poll promise was to waive off the loans of the farmers in only 10 days which the Kamal Nath led government is yet to fulfil, in fact, he himself admitted last week that a full loan waiver cannot be achieved in such a short period of time.

The loan waiver scheme appears to be another scam as it has been reported that the government has waived off nonexistent loans. Farmers who had not even taken loans started appearing in the list of debtors whose loans are being waived off by the government.

The Congress governments promise to waive-off farms loans under Jai Kisan Rid Mukhti Yojana has turned out to be a dud, as the false promises of loan-waivers have already claimed three lives.

Pakistani couple living illegally in Bengaluru deported

The Pakistani couple living illegally in Bengaluru has been deported on Saturday, May 11. As per reports, Kashif Shamsuddin, 33, and his wife Kiran Ghulam Ali, 28, along with another Pakistani National, Samira Abdul Rehman managed to enter India illegally through Qatar, Nepal and Oman.

They had succeeded in illicitly obtaining Aadhaar and Indian voter IDs with the help of a tout. The police arrested them when they were travelling in a car which was suspected to be stolen. The court had then order punishment of 21 months on the grounds of illegally entering India without a passport or a visa and forging fake documents to prolong their stay.

The Karnataka HC on Wednesday, May 8, 2019, ordered their immediate deportation. The court had offered 2 weeks’ time to the authorities for their deportation. The couple were staying in Kumaraswamy Layout in Bengaluru until May 2017 when they were arrested by the police and fake documents were seized from them.

Samira had been married to an Indian citizen, Muhammad Shihab, who hails from Kerala, while he was working in Qatar. However, Samira’s parents didn’t allow her to stay with her husband. She then conspired with the couple to escape away to India and settle there. Samaira is not been deported and is currently serving time in Bengaluru jail.

However, they could manage to elude the authorities after procurement of fake voter IDs and Aadhaar cards. Taking the notice of the lapse, the High court has ordered the concerned authorities to immediately deport them. The government counsel responded to the court that they will have to seek permission from the authorities for their deportation.

However, hearing on the case on April 27, 2019, the court said that no such permission is required to deport them as these Pakistani nationals are being fed on public money. The government of India said that the Pakistani authorities are yet to confirm their nationality before which the deportation cannot be done. The court had asked the government to complete the deportation by May 5 as keeping them here would further burden the public exchequer.

As no cases are pending against the couple Kashif and his wife Kiran, residents of Chakrapot, Karachi district, the Ministry of External Affairs has given its approval for their deportation.

West Bengal: BJP surge leaves Mamata Banerjee in a tizzy, TMC goons caught on camera pulling down Modi’s posters in Kolkata

The ‘Modi wave’ proliferating in West Bengal seems to have left Mamata Banerjee’s brigade completely delirious. The aggressive plans of BJP are making Mamata Banerjee feel insecure and threatened by the saffron surge. She has unleashed her goons to do whatever it takes to choke off BJP from making inroads in West Bengal.

A shocking video shared on Twitter by ABP news journalist, Vikas Bhadauria, on May 11, laid credence on these rising apprehensions of the TMC. The video which emerged shows TMC goons pulling down BJP’s hoardings on AJC Bose Road Kolkata, West Bengal.

The goons are seen lowering posters with pictures of Prime Minister Modi and wadding it in a truck which apparently looks like that belonging to the Kolkata municipal corporation.

Mamata Banerjee has somehow been extremely perplexed after the results of the last year concluded West Bengal Panchayat elections, which showed BJP making significant inroads in certain areas in Bengal.

According to reports, the BJP had not only managed to thwart the TMC wave in the tribal regions, but it had also registered success in former Maoist bastions of the state like Purulia and Jhargram. In fact, BJP’ surge in other areas like Bankura, Dakshin Dinajpur, Uttar Dinajpur, Birbhum, Paschim Medinipur, Malda, Alipurduar and Jalpaiguri districts had marked the beginning of the downfall of the TMC.

The BJP had reportedly won 644 of the 1944 gram panchayat seats in Purulia and 329 of the 806 seats in Jhargram district. In total the BJP had taken its tally in gram panchayat seats from earlier 548 to a commendable 5759 and Panchayat Samiti seats from 33 to 764. The BJP had also won 23 Zilla Parishad seats last year.

The rising popularity of BJP amongst the people of West Bengal, which began last year during the panchayat polls, and kept burgeoning this election season, has left Mamata’s brigade completely baffled. While the TMC chief has left no stone unturned in disparaging the Prime Minister, her goons have been busy discharging their savagery at BJP workers in Bengal. Innumerable incidents were BJP workers have been brutally assaulted and killed and their houses torched have been reported in the recent past.

In fact, with Mamata at the helm of affairs in West Bengal, TMC goons have been empowered to run amok carrying out their depraved activities with impunity. It is widely believed that TMC goons are protected and sheltered by TMC leadership which further emboldens them to execute their nefarious activities.

If I give an ad to Indian Express is it a dole? Then how can homes for poor be a dole? says PM Modi in a freewheeling interview

In a brutally honest interview given by PM Modi to the Indian Express, he did not mince words in responding to the questions hurled at him. He answered a plethora of questions ranging from the corruption charges levelled by Congress president Rahul Gandhi to his government’s controversial policy decisions such as demonetisation. Instead of evading the uncomfortable questions, Modi took them head-on and answered the questions without beating around the bush.

On one such instance, Comparing the UPA’s rights-based model- Right to information, rural jobs, education etc., the question asserted that there’s obscurity in the model implemented by the current government. The question further alluded that there’s a stark difference in the policies implemented by the government such as Mudra loans, which is a tool for self-employment and PM-Kisan which is perceived as a dole.

Responding to the question in a confrontational mode, PM Modi said that he fails to understand the definition of a dole. Enunciating his stance, he says that his government has been giving advertisements to the Indian Express, will it be considered as dole? To drive home his point, PM Modi explains how in several sectors the government has to build the infrastructure due to lack of private players in the field. Modi asserts that he is getting houses built for the poor. Such investments are empowerment and not doles, he claims. “We have created a chain over which the health sector will be built up — is this empowerment or dole?” PM Modi asks.

Modi further added that he has never called Right to Education or Right to Food as doles, but he has rather termed them as election stunts. According to him, the rights-based model should be discussed after looking at their status before he was elected to power on May 25, 2014.

Modi’s image has not been made by Khan Market gang or the Lutyens Delhi that it can be dismantled: PM Modi takes on Rahul Gandhi

Prime Minister Modi in his interview to Indian Express minced no words in taking on the Lutyens media and the Congress party, especially the party president Rahul Gandhi. Taking on Rahul Gandhi’s campaign strategy which was to destroy Modi’s incorruptible image, PM Modi said, “Modi ki chhavi, Delhi ke Khan Market ke gang ne nahin banayi hai, Lutyens Delhi ne nahin banayi hai. 45 saal ki Modi ki tapasya ne chhavi banayi hai. Achchi hai ya buri hai. (Modi’s image, whether good or bad, has not been made by the Khan Market gang or the Lutyens Delhi. It has been built by hard work of over 45years.) You cannot dismantle it.”

Questioning the Lutyens media for creating Rajiv Gandhi’s ‘Mr Clean’ image despite the accusations of his involvement in Bofors scam and the role of Congress leaders in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, Modi says Rajiv Gandhi is not his issue. Speaking on the Nehru-Gandhi family taking the Indian Navy’s INS Virat for their family vacation, PM Modi said that he raked up the issue when Congress questioned him and accused him of treating the armed forces as his personal property. “Kehte hain ki baat niklegi toh dur talak jayegi (it is said that when a talk starts, you never know when it ends),” PM Modi said.

Adding that the December 2018 results in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan acted more like a confidence booster for the party cadre, Modi said, “Every pollster, media, Lutyens Club, the Khan Market gang, was eager to defeat us and predictions were being made that we will wind up with about 40 seats in all three states.” He added that while everyone was rooting for the BJP to lose, the fact is that Congress couldn’t even get the full majority in either Madhya Pradesh or in Rajasthan. “We had more votes than them (in Madhya Pradesh). So, the results, in a way, were a confidence-builder for party cadres,” PM Modi said.

Speaking on his image, he said, he is a fun person. He says he does not ‘manage’ photoshoots with opposition where they all appear smiling, but he is otherwise a leader who enjoys light moments.

Making a sly remark on the Indian Express, Prime Minister Modi said that while the newspaper has always been at the forefront of raising issues relating to crime against the backward communities, the paper missed following up on the horrific gang-rape in Alwar, Rajasthan of the Dalit woman which took place a few days back.

On a lighter note, when the Indian Express journalist asked him what could his government not do despite the 282 seats in the Lok Sabha, he said he could not get the Indian Express to be objective in Modi’s criticism.

25% voter turnout recorded in Phase 6 of Lok Sabha Elections till 11 AM

Phase 6 of the Lok Sabha Elections are currently underway. The BJP had won 44 of the 59 seats that went to polls today in 2014 Lok Sabha elections. The 2019 General Elections, thus far, have witnessed a high voter turnout and is poised to overtake the previous General Elections to become the one with the highest turnout.

The voter turnout recorded in Phase 6 till 11 a.m. was at 24.98%. The turnout in West Bengal was highest at 38.08% while it was lowest in Delhi with 19.49%. Jharkhand, too, registered a turnout of over 31%.

While the day is far from over, it is indeed a very good start to the day. Some key battles are being fought across the states and a high voter turnout generally suits the Bharatiya Janata Party.

This time around, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been urging people to come out and vote in large numbers. Numerous celebrities, too, have joined in the campaign upon being requested by the Prime Minister. And as figures for the first four phases show, people have been coming out in large numbers to exercise their democratic right.

Didi’s intolerance: BJP youth leader arrested for Met Gala-themed meme of Mamata Banerjee slapped with non bailable charges

In a development that extends credence to the intolerance under West Bengal’s Mamata Banerjee’ rule, Priyanka Sharma, the BJP Bengal youth leader, who had been arrested for merely posting a meme caricaturing Banerjee on her Facebook Timeline on May 9, has been slapped with non-bailable charges and sent to judicial custody for 14 days.

A complaint against the convenor of BJYM, Priyanka Sharma was made by TMC leader Vibhas Hazra in Howrah for allegedly sharing a morphed picture of Mamata Banerjee. The MET Gala 2019 themed meme superimposed Mamata’s face on Priyanka Chopra’s body. She was arrested and produced in Chief Judicial Magistrate’s court in Howrah.

The copy of the complaint read that this act broke the community guidelines and it was being viewed as an issue of violence. “She not just tries to insult our Hon’ble Chief Minister, but she trying to insult the culture of our Bengal by her post on Facebook and which is Cyber Crime”, read the complaint.

The TMC leaders had maintained that sharing the CM’s photoshopped pictures was a grave crime and it was insulting the CM of the state.

Meanwhile, Sharma has been charged under Section 500 of the IPC (defamation), and Sections 66A (offensive messages) and the non-bailable 67A (punishment for publishing or transmitting of material containing sexually explicit act, etc., in electronic form) of the Information Technology Act.

Legal experts confirmed that it would be difficult for West Bengal police to prove obscenity or the meme’s “sexually explicit” nature and also said that Section 66A and other provisions Sharma has been charged with, was struck down by the Supreme Court in March 2015. However, relief might not come soon for the BJP youth leader as courts in Howrah are on strike till May 14.

Senior Trinamool leader and state minister Arup Roy told The Sunday Express, “There was a complaint at the Cyber Crime department against the post. The police have done the right thing by taking action as it is a criminal offence. The post was in bad taste. The West Bengal Chief Minister is a woman and any post like this is not acceptable. We condemn such incidents, especially if done during elections.”

Meanwhile, with over 56,000 tweets, #ISupportPriyankaSharma campaign started trending on Twitter, after her arrest on May 10. The netizens came up in huge numbers to support BJP’s Priyanka Sharma and voiced their disapproval against Mamata Banerjee’s coercion.

West Bengal: BJP candidate Bharati Ghosh heckled, her vehicle vandalised and stopped from casting her vote by TMC cadre

As violence, booth capturing and rigging continues to mar West Bengal this election season, it is being reported that Bharati Ghosh, BJP’s candidate from West Bengal’s Ghatal constituency, has been attacked by Trinamool Congress (TMC) cadres, as Ghatal votes today in phase 6 of the Lok Sabha elections. Her convoy was vandalised in Midnapore’s Keshpur. Two out of her six personal security guards were also injured in the incident.

Cars of several journalists have also been attacked allegedly by Trinamool Congress men. They were heading towards a booth from where reports of rigging came in.

Also, the BJP candidate, today morning alleged that she was pushed and jeered by some women supporters of the Trinamool Congress when she went to a polling station in her constituency. She accused TMC leader Soumen Mohapatra of stopping BJP’s polling agent from sitting inside the polling booth in Chandkhali area of Keshpur in West Medinipur district.

“I am the candidate. I am being pushed around and heckled. Those assaulting me and preventing my polling agent to enter the booth should be arrested,” said Ghosh.

Disturbed by the entire episode Bharati Ghosh furthered, “TMC supporters pushed me to the ground. They are not allowing any polling to be held in Keshpur area. These women were hired by the TMC. I shall complain in writing to the ECI (Election Commission of India).”

Polling is being held in Ghatal along with seven other Lok Sabha seats in West Bengal in the sixth round of the seven-phased election on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the women who were hired by the Trinamool and confessed being TMC supporters to the local news channel formed a human chain to bar Bharati from entering the booth.

“Local (state) police are mere spectators. They are not calling women cops either,” alleged Ghosh.

The central force personnel deployed around the polling station told local channels that they are helpless and cannot interfere since there are no women officials present and those trying to block Ghosh were all women.

After 45 minutes of unsuccessful struggling to get her agent inside the booth, Ghosh left the area alleging that the incident was a part of the conspiracy by the TMC men to keep her confined to a particular spot.

Bharati Ghosh is taking on Bengali actor-turned-lawmaker Deepak (Dev) Adhikari of the Trinamool Congress in Ghatal.

Meanwhile, Bharati Ghosh, who was once considered a very close aide of Mamata Banerjee was the first IPS officer to resign from service in Mamata’s regime. She resigned in protest against the state government.

She had last year made shocking revelations about West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee alleging that Banerjee “transfers officers if BJP gains ground” and that Ghosh was shunted out due to the rise of BJP in Sabang by-elections held in 2017.
