Kerala: Catholic Federation threatens that nuns will be thrown out if they continue protest against Bishop Franco

0

The Nun rape case has been taking horrific turns day by day, as now the Changanacherry-based Catholic Federation of India, an independent body consisting of followers of Catholic Church is all set to launch a protest demanding the removal of nuns who have spoken out against the former bishop of Jalandhar diocese.

According to reports, the president of the federation P P Joseph has alleged that the convent has become a camp for people who are working against the interest of the Catholic Church and asked to remove the nuns who are staying at the Missionaries of Jesus convent in Kuravilangad.

“If the Save Our Sisters (SOS) begins the second phase protest against the Catholic church, we will launch our protest to oust the nuns from the convent,” Catholic Federation of India President P P Joseph told media.

Joseph went on to allege that terrorist groups and anti-social groups are behind the agitations against the Catholic church. However, a press statement by the Catholic Bishops Conference of India (CBCI) said that top officials from the Vatican have been following developments in Kerala.

“We were assured that the Holy See is closely following developments and is awaiting the result of a police investigation. We reiterated our confidence in the Judicial system of India, and trust the full truth will emerge and justice will be done for all,” according to the statement.

Franco Mulakkal, Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Jalandhar, is said to have raped a nun at a guest house in Kuravilangad in May 2014 and exploited her sexually on several other occasions. The nun has registered a complaint in June this year and has been allegedly threatened by the accused of doing so. The congregation has also stood by the rape accused and referred to him as an “innocent soul”. We had also reported that Kerala MLA PC George had called the alleged rape victim a ‘prostitute’.

Bishop Franco Mulakkal was arrested by the police officials on September 21st after the investigating team finally found evidence that linked him in the sexual harassment case. The Kerala High Court has rejected bail plea of accused Bishop and also pointed out the availability of evidence to pursue the case and evidence shows that there are materials that prima facie show that the allegations against the Bishop are true and serious.

Symbiosis media college students share their #MeToo moments, college asks them to come forward

0

With innumerable instances of sexual allegations against prominent personalities from the media and film fraternity, including stand up comics, coming to light after the #MeToo Movement gathering momentum, students of the Symbiosis Centre for Media and Communication (SCMC) have taken to Twitter and Facebook to share stories of alleged sexual harassment, intimidation and assault on campus.

With more than 10 students sharing their experiences directly or anonymously on social media, pressing the institute to take notice, the institute has sent two open letters to students appealing to the students to come forward, promising them help. Taking cognisance of the harrowing experiences the students had shared on social media, the SCMC in the statement issued, invited the students for a discussion in the institute through a Google form.

“We can start a dialogue without even mentioning your identity. Your one step can go a long way in making someone’s life easier,” it read.

It also apologised to the former students who have accused their seniors and some faculty members of sexual harassment. “Dear alumni, we are indeed sorry, if you had to face something like this. But we promise you that if you reach out to the Internal Complaints Committee, we will take steps and actions if need be,” the statement read.

Vidya Yeravdekar, principal director of Symbiosis Society, and Anupam Siddhartha, director of SCMC Pune, confirmed to The Indian Express, that scores of students have written to the institute sharing their agonising experiences.

Discussing the ‘toxic culture’ in the campus few students in their posts accused director Anupam Siddhartha (mentioning only his initials in most cases) of not taking any action when such complaints were brought to his notice. This has, however, been denied by the Director, saying that he had only received one complaint in 2018 which was being looked into.

Vikas Bahl sends legal notice to Anurag Kashyap and Vikramaditya Motwane, asks them to apologise and withdraw messages from social media

Bollywood director Vikas Bahl, who has been accused of being a sexual predator by one of the former employees, has issued a legal notice to his former partners of the Phantom Films – Anurag Kashyap and Vikramaditya Motwane and has also called them as “opportunists” for using the allegations to defame him. In the notice, Bahl has asked for an unconditional apology and to withdraw messages from social media.

In the legal notice sent to Kashyap and Motwane on Tuesday via email, Bahl has accused them of not only orchestrating the whole campaign against him ahead of the release of his new film Super 30 starring Hrithik Roshan but also to shut down the Phantom Films and also making him look like a fall guy responsible for its failure. The notice says the tweets and the Huffington post interview has been made by his partners has been done with a sole intent of professional jealousy and to defame Vikas Bahl.

“Our client states that you are neither a witness nor an alleged victim, but instead an opportunist seeking to derive benefit based on unsubstantiated information”, said the notice.

Bahl’s lawyers have also accused Kashyap of fixing another employee at Phantom Films to put similar allegations on Bahl. “This makes us wonder whether the alleged incident of sexual assault also has any authenticity, given that the alleged victim was, in fact, working as your own employee,” Bahl’s lawyer said in the notice.

Vikas Bahl, the partner of controversial director Anurag Kashyap’s Phantom Films, was called out by a woman claiming to be an employee of their movie venture. The lady had claimed that Vikas Bahl had tried to involve her in a forceful sexual encounter during movie promotions. She has accused Bahl of trying to undress her and violated her by putting his hands inside her dress. However, she claimed that Vikas Bahl got agitated for her resistance and ended up masturbating on her.

She further accused Kashyap of being complicit in it as he knew of the incident but still kept quiet. Shockingly, none of his partners reacted to this incidents initially, as they normally do. Anurag Kashyap finally issued a statement condemning the behaviour of Vikas Bahl. However, numerous questions were raised on the seriousness of Kashyap’s condemnation as he had chosen to remain silent despite knowing the details of the incident since 2015.

The #MeToo movement in the country has turned out to be the biggest revelation of the year, as it has consumed the well-known names in the media, cinema, grappling stand-up comedy industry. Some brave women stood up and disclosed some of the heinous crimes perpetrated on them by some self-proclaimed ‘woke feminists’. Among the accused are the AIB, Writer Varun Grover, Director Vikas Bahl, Rajat Kapoor, Alok Nath, The Wire founding editor Sidharth Bhatia, Prashant Jha and others.

Letter to Rahul Gandhi questions Congress’ dubious record of ensuring safety of women at workplace

The #MeToo movement which began with Utsav Chakraborty from All India Bakchod being exposed as a pervert has already claimed the careers of multiple alleged sexual predators in journalism and the stand-up comedy scene. Allegations have also surfaced against BJP MP M.J. Akbar who is accused to have used his position to exploit women during his years as the editor of a newspaper.

The Congress party was quick to latch on the allegations against Akbar and grasped the opportunity to take a dig at External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj for refusing to answer questions posed by some journalists regarding the same. Through its official Twitter handle, the Congress asserted that shielding sexual predators is in BJP’s DNA.

But now, people are questioning the Congress party’s own conduct in matters of safety for women in the workplace. A letter has been addressed to party president Rahul Gandhi demanding that he take urgent action against NSUI President Fairoz Khan and explain the sham investigation regarding allegations against Chirag Patnaik who was involved with the party’s IT cell.

In her letter to Rahul Gandhi, Gunja Kapoor states, “While certain organizations have already dealt with those outed, we are yet to see your party take any action on two people who have been recently accused of sexual harassment in the recent past.” She then proceeds to ask why were the accused not forced to step down from their position or sent on a leave of absence to felicitate a free and fair inquiry.

One of the accused mentioned in Kapoor’s letter, Chirag Patnaik, has been arrested by the Delhi Police on the charges of sexual harassment levelled against him by a former colleague. The victim had claimed that she had reported the matter to Rahul Gandhi and IT cell head Divya Spandana and yet no action was taken against the accused. Furthermore, she claims it led to even more harassment. She had further asserted that she knew the committee formed to investigate the matter would be biased. It is pertinent to mention that Divya had come in defence of the now arrested Patnaik and blamed the victim instead.

The other person mentioned in Kapoor’s letter, Fairoz Khan, was accused by a woman member of NSUI that he was using abetting women of the organization to have sexual relationships with him in lieu of political posts. The Congress had then said that the party was taking suo moto cognizance of the charges. However, merely weeks later, Khan was seen on the posters of a ‘Girls’ Convention’ held in Indore.

Supreme Court refuses to issue notice in Rafale deal petition, seeks detail of decision making process

0

A three judge bench of Supreme Court heard the petition against the Rafale deal today. The bench comprising CJI Ranjan Gogoi and justices SK Kaul and KM Joseph was hearing three separate petitions seeking various details regarding India’s purchase of 36 Rafale fighter jets from France. The petitions were submitted by Advocate M. L. Sharma, Advocate Vineet Dhanda, and Robert Vadra’s brother in law, Tehseen S Poonawalla. The petitioners wanted a probe into the Rafale deal and disclosure of costs involved, and wanted cancellation of the deal alleging that it was the result of corruption.

Hearing the matter, the court refused to issue a notice to the central government at this moment. However, the apex court expressed its willingness to be apprised by the union government about the steps taken in the decision-making process which led to the purchase of the fighter jets. The bench clarified that the detail furnished to the court will not cover pricing of the aircraft and suitability of the same for Indian Air Force, due to the sensitive nature of such information.

The court also made it clear that they have not considered the allegations made by the petitioners in their respective petitions while seeking this information from the government. Significantly, the bench also noted that allegations “appear to be grossly inadequate”, and the court has sought this information only to satisfy itself.

Arguing for the government of India, Attorney General K. K. Venugopal urged the bench to not entertain the writ petitions, saying that it is a matter of national security. He also indicated that the purpose of PIL is to safeguard the interests of the poor, and therefore this case is not fit for PIL. The advocate general said that the petitions are political in nature which have been filed for political gains.

The AG also said that courts do not interfere in international treaties and this is not a judicially reviewable issue.

Hearing arguments from both sides, the bench said they would not issue any notice in the matter, but asked the government to furnish the detail of the decision making process in a sealed cover, without technological parameters or suitability of the aircraft.

The stark similarity between Abrahamic faiths and fundamental secularism practiced by Nehruvians

Historian and Nehruvian Sri Ramchandra Guha categorically tweeted that he wanted the channel Times Now to be closed on account of their deviation from “Truth”. There is no equivalent word for ‘Truth’ in Indian languages. The usual suspect Satya does not convey the idea of truth (a theory based understanding) but rather the idea of real (an empirics based understanding). The concept of the theoretical understanding of truth comes from religion (discussed in Balagangadhara’s scholarly work The Heathen in His Blindness of which a brief synopsis is presented on Pragyata. An irreligious person does not have any absolute truth or falsehood but merely real and unreal things.

Sri Guha might have not thought so much before using the word truth in his tweet, but his use of the term summarises the central idea of secularism in India. It is primarily a belief system. It is often found that the secularist discards the logical argument from a ‘communal person’ on the ground that the argument has not put forth by a secular person. As a matter of fact, Sri Guha also rejects the right of Times Now to have their opinion on the ground that it deviates from some absolute version of Truth that he has. This is exactly a religious idea.

Let me illustrate. On perusal of the Book of Abrahamic religions, we understand the Creator is far less concerned about the idea of karma (actions) of a human being but chiefly concerned about whether that person-in-question acknowledges the Creator. On having that acknowledgement, called Faith, the concerned person receives eternal heaven in his afterlife. Otherwise, his destiny would be eternal hell, what else? Abrahamic religions do not much care about karma (an empirical idea; reality) but on Faith (a theoretical idea; Truth). Therefore, fundamentalist religious organisations whether ISIS of modern Iraq or Church practising Inquisition in medieval Goa, are not concerned about nature of a person but offer bullet or fire for lack of Faith of a person in their codified religion.

In the same vein, people like Guha do not insist on karma but believe in Faith in the secular system. Ones who they call non-secular or communal, are despicable irrespective of their good work/karma. On the contrary, they insist that those who label themselves as secular must be respected only on account of their secular faith. This simile with an Abrahamic religion is quite stark and non-ignorable.

Can secularism be a candidate for a religion? And, can the faith in secularism be a candidate for a Faith in a religion?

Affirmative. Let’s come to the celebrated bestseller Sapiens: A Brief History of Mankind (2011). There, historian Yuval Noah Harari writes (Chapter 12):

“The modern age has witnessed the rise of a number of new natural-law religions, such as liberalism, Communism, capitalism, nationalism and Nazism. These creeds do not like to be called religions and refer to themselves as ideologies. But this is just a semantic exercise. If a religion is a system of human norms and values that is founded on the belief in a superhuman order, then Soviet Communism was no less a religion than Islam.”

Liberalism or secular liberalism is akin to a faith, in Harari’s scholarly observation. He provided his solid arguments in the book. I desist from repeating them here.

This is not the first time that such words are spoken. Reputed Bengali scholar Syed Mujtaba Ali said the same thing long ago (“Vacuum” of his book “Tuni Mem” in Bengali). He showed, point by point, that Communism and Nazism are very much akin to religious Faith. I will walk on his path only now to show the similarities between secular fundamentalism and religious fundamentalism.

The beginning of Secularism is with the Faith that all religions are exactly symmetric (perfectly equivalent). This is the Kalimah of secularism. Any opinion on any matter comes from this Faith. For them, all religions are exactly equivalent irrespective of their origin, history and idea.

There are two schools of seculars who though believe in the fundamental truth of their belief system, differ otherwise. One school is the cultural Marxist school who feel that all religions are equally false. The other school is Sarva-Dharma school who feel that all religions are equivalent and true in the exact same manner.

Within a religion, these kinds of schools whose beliefs contradict each other, are also quite common. For example, Catholics and Protestants are two branches of the Christians. The former ones believe in the authority of the papal church whereas the latter ones do not believe in papal authority.  Similarly, Shias believe in the inheritance of the sons of Ali to caliphate whereas Sunnis do not subscribe to such a belief.

Any faith has a Holy Book such as the Bible of Christianity, the Quran of Islam. Syed Mujtaba Ali noted Das Kapital of Communism and Mein Kampf of Nazism. Likewise, the Holy Book for Indian secularism is the Indian Constitution. Instead of viewing it as a set of rules created by us in some point which may suffer from human fallibility, secular fundamentalists view it as a Holy Book which can neither be questioned nor be changed.

Religions have Prophets. Jesus Christ (son of God and Virgin Mary) for Christians; Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) for Muslims. For secular fundamentalists, it is Gandhi and Nehru. They were infallible men for a secular fundamentalist. As no Muslim fundamentalist entertains any criticism of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), no secular fundamentalist tolerates any criticism of Gandhi or Nehru. Books or movies exposing any dark side of their character are greeted with demands for their ban.

Religions have own festivals. Secularism has its festival which is the birthdays of their prophets.

Religions have pilgrimage sites. In the Soviet land, the mummy of the Lenin or Stalin was the pilgrimage site. Crowds of people used to visit them. In Delhi, Rajghat or Teen Murti Bhavan is the secular sites of pilgrimage. Any proposal to make such sites for other prime ministers makes the secular fundamentalist angry for the holiness of the site would diminish.

Faiths discourage contrary opinions to rise. In an Islamic country, criticism of the Quran is prohibited. In seminaries, criticism of the Bible is not encouraged. Under secular fundamentalism too, comparative study of religions is not allowed in India lest it exposes the hollowness of the equivalence of all religions – the faith of secular fundamentalism.

In every religion, there are some reformers who criticise the adherents of the religion remaining faithful to the religious dogma. For example, Martin Luther was a devout Christian but he criticised the Catholic Church officials. Under secularism too, there are some who call themselves true seculars and call other seculars pseudo-seculars. They vow to bring true secularism.  Who are they? This is an exercise left to the readers of this article.

Congress IT cell head Divya Spandana named in the charge sheet in Chirag Patnaik sexual harassment case

Congress IT cell head, Divya Spandana’s name has been named up in a charge sheet that was filed on Friday in the Congress sexual harassment case, in which a former party worker had accused the right-hand man of social media chief Divya Spandana of molestation at the workplace. She had also alleged that Spandana had not taken any action, but instead had “mentally harassed” her.

The court took cognizance of the case on Friday and summoned the accused Chirag Patnaik. Patnaik was arrested in July on the charges of 354A and 509 on accusations of him of breaching the woman’s personal space and indulging in immoral behaviour. He was later released on bail.

The charge sheet describes how Congress social media cell in-charge Divya Spandana refused to entertain the complainant’s grave allegations against Chirag Patnaik of frequent misbehaviour. She also called out Divya and accused her of displaying arrogant and apathetic attitude rendering the workplace intolerable for her to continue. She cited ‘psychological reasons’ for resigning. In the charge sheet, the victim has, in excruciating details, alleged that Patnaik violated her personal space at work “by coming too close to me on the pretext of checking tweets”. She further accused that Patnaik “exhaled into my breathing space whenever he encircled me from behind in an immoral manner.’ The victim also accused Chirag of “gazing at the contours of her body” in a lascivious manner.

The victim had joined the social media cell of the Congress on the March 5  as ‘social media manager’ and was entrusted the responsibility of running the official Twitter account of the Indian National Congress (@INCIndia) and its communications handle (@INCSandesh). In an interview to MyNation, she said, “The period between May 17 and May 24 was marked with mental harassment. Despite knowing I was disturbed, Miss Spandana did not correct her behaviour towards me. She humiliated me with insulting work-related messages on the official group for no fault of mine. My professionalism and manners were also questioned. I broke down inconsolably on the May 23 and never returned to the office.”

Last week, NSUI president Fairoz Khan, who is accused of seeking sexual favours, was found on posters of women’s convention.

Pakistani handlers used Facebook accounts ‘Neha’ and ‘Pooja’ to trap arrested Brahmos engineer for spying

0

Nishant Agarwal, the senior systems engineer at Brahmos Aerospace who was arrested on Monday on espionage charges by ATS officials was found to be interacting frequently with two facebook accounts named Neha Sharma and Pooja Ranjan. According to reports, the Uttar Pradesh ATS unit has informed the court that the two facebook accounts are suspicious and are believed to be operated by Pakistan based ISI agents.

The Uttar Pradesh ATS reportedly informed the court of junior magistrate SM Joshi in Nagpur yesterday while seeking transit remand for Agarwal that Agarwal was in touch with Pakistani handlers through these two facebook accounts. They have also informed the court that despite being engaged in highly sensitive assignments that pertained to national security and involve high-risk data, Nishant Agarwal was ‘casual’ on the internet.

The investigating officers of the ATS have informed the court that both the accounts ‘Neha Sharma’ and ‘Pooja Ranjan’ are based out of Islamabad and such accounts are often used to target and trap senior officials. Both the accounts are allegedly run by ISI operatives. The ATS officials have also reportedly informed the court that highly sensitive files with red markings for sensitive information have been found stored casually on Agarwal’s personal laptop. The ATS officials had also reported that another personal computer was seized from Agarwal’s rented house in Nagpur which contained sensitive documents that should never have reached a personal computer. ATS officials in UP have also seized an old personal computer from Agarwal’s native home in Roorkee and its contents are being investigated.

The ATS officials also informed the court that top classified information has been stored in Nishant’s laptop and a ‘casual’ attitude over social media platforms has made him an ‘easy target’ for ISI operatives.

Agarwal has been charged with section 3,4,5 and 9 of the Official Secrets Act, sections 419,420, 467 and 468 of the Indian Penal Code and also section 66(B) of the Information Technology Act. The court allowed a three-day transit custody. Agarwal has been taken to Lucknow for further investigation. He is in his twenties and a Young Scientist awardee. He worked as a senior systems analyst in Brahmos Aerospace, a joint venture by India’s DRDO and Russia’s ‘Military Industrial consortium’ (NPO Mashinostroyenia).

Brahmos Aerospace is tasked with developing the supersonic Brahmos missiles that are considered the fastest cruise missiles in the world. The Nagpur Brahmos unit where Nishant was employed makes propellants for the missiles. This is the first instance when the Brahmos has been hit by an espionage scandal. In recent past, the UP ATS had arrested a BSF jawan for passing on information to ISI regarding troop movements. A cook named Ramesh employed in the household of an Indian diplomat in Pithoragarh was also arrested by military intelligence officials.

‘Honey Trapping’ is a commonly used technique employed by spy agencies. Earlier this year, an Indian diplomat Madhuri Gupta was sentenced to jail for allegedly leaking sensitive information to ISI officials who had honey trapped her during her stint at the Indian high commission in Islamabad.

‘#MeToo is just tamasha, will disappear like Anna movement’ – Justice Katju’s latest gyan

0

India has been gripped by the #MeToo movement recently. One originally started in the US in October 2017 by American actress Alyssa Milano, following exposures like that of the film producer Harvey Weinstein. Several women have come out in the open to narrative tales of sexual harassment and exploitation.

The majority have taken most of the harrowing tales seriously but some concerns have also been raised about anonymous allegations and how one would go about ascertaining the veracity of those allegations in the absence of women filing FIRs and a proper investigation being conducted.

While the concerns of cross-checking the veracity of anonymous allegations might not be totally unfounded, some people have made the most outlandish statements regarding the #MeToo movement.

Retired Judge Markandey Katju has written an article on TheWeek where he lampoons the movement. The article headlined “MeToo movement is gimmick & ploy, aping of ‘goras'”, The former Judge has made the following points:

  1. Everyone knows Bollywood and Media are exploitative. Women are speaking now because the ‘goras’ did it in the USA.
  2. People are ‘aping the west’ with this #MeToo movement because Indians have an inferiority complex
  3. Sexual harassment being given prominence now is a ‘diversionary move’
  4. Sexual harassment ‘should be condemned’ but the much bigger problems of the people are poverty, unemployment, poor healthcare, malnourishment, lack of good education, farmers’ distress, price rise, atrocities on minorities, etc.
  5. He says that the ‘rulers’ have failed the tackle the ‘major problems’ and hence diverting attention to these ‘lesser problems’ and convincing the people that these are the ‘only problems’.
  6. He says and we quote, “Some years back, the Nirbhaya gang-rape case was so hyped by the media that an impression was sought to be created that the only problem before India was not poverty, not unemployment, not price rise, not healthcare and not malnourishment… but just rape”.
  7. Some allegations might be incorrect too.

While Katju has a point in wondering whether some allegations might be false, his other points cross the realm of bizarre. It is one thing to say that the due process of the law must be followed and a completely different thing to say that these “small issues” like sexual harassment are “being hyped” by some politicians who have failed to handle “bigger problems” like poverty and “atrocities on minorities”.

It is also horrifying that a former Judge of the Supreme Court would assert that the Nirbhaya case was “hyped”. To recall, Nirbhaya was the brutal gang rape of a woman where the rapists violated her repeatedly, even with an iron rod to a point where her intestines were pulled out. The victim succumbed to her brutal injuries. This had rightly triggered a tsunami of protests demanding stricter laws to punish rapists.

There are certain incidents that shake the conscience of the society at large. Nirbhaya was one of them. For Katju to even insinuate that it was “hyped” by the media to “divert attention” from larger issues is an atrocity in itself.

The #MeToo movement was a spontaneous coming together of women who have faced harassment and for Katju to imply the hand of “failed politicians” who want to “divert attention” points towards a deep hatred for not only the cause but women in general.

Katju, after writing this bizarre article, took to Facebook to make even more bizarre comments. Katju asserted that “When men are no longer exploited and oppressed by men, women too will no longer be exploited and oppressed by men”. Later, in a bid to explain himself, he added another layer of asinine comments and said “When I spoke of men exploiting men, I meant a minority exploiting a majority. The minority and majority may include both men and women”.

It is, at this point, beyond me to decipher what he really meant, but I am guessing nothing very encouraging.

He also said that ” The MeToo movement will last for a few weeks, and will then disappear, just as Anna Hazare’s movement against corruption disappeared. It is just a tamasha”.

Katju’s only comment in his article, as well as Facebook that made sense, was when he said “I do not say that. What I say is that unless we create a non-exploitative society, women’s oppression and harassment will continue. MeToo can only have a marginal effect”.

It is perhaps true that the aim has to be to create a non-exploitative society. However, the value on calling out individual predators can also not be undermined as a “gimmick” or “diversionary tactic”. It is when the powerful individuals who turn a society into an exploitative one are called out, can the society take a small step towards being wholly non-exploitative.

Joining the cacophony of the bizarre, BJP MP Udit Raj decided not to be left behind. While saying that the #MeToo movement can be an exploitative tool in the hands of women, he also said that there are cases like honey-trap because of which men are now scared to meet women alone. He also said that he believes it is in the nature of man, but women aren’t all saints either.

The trepidations regarding false allegations, misuse of law, misuse of the movement, and defamation based on false allegations are not unfounded. However, the entire undermining of the movement is counterproductive and reaks of sexist. While every case needs to be judged independently and based on merits, saying that the entire movement is an exploitative tool or that it is a ‘diversionary tactic’ seeks to discredit even genuine cases.

#MeToo: National Commission for Women reaching out to the survivors of sexual harassment

0

In wake of the recent allegations of sexual harassment against the men in power in industries like media and films that have been outed by people over social media recently, the National Commission for Women has started reaching out to women to gather information and details.

The NCW is also reaching out to victims/survivors via telephone.

Maharashtra Commission for Women, too, took cognisance of the complaint filed by Tanushree Dutta against film actor Nana Patekar alleging sexual harassment on the sets of the film ‘Horn Ok Pleassss’ back in 2008 and sent a notice to Patekar along with choreographer Ganesh Acharya and producer Sameer Siddiqui and director Rakesh Sarang. They are asked to submit their response in 10 days.

The #MeToo movement on social media has taken the country by a storm with many big industry names like Alok Nath, Rajat Kapoor, Varun Grover and comedians like Tanmay Bhat and Gursimran Khamba, co-founders of All India Bakchod being accused of sexual misconduct. Journalists like Prashant Jha and film director Vikas Bahl and many, many more have been named as perpetrators of harassment.
