#MeToo : Singer alleges sexual harassment by Padma awardee Tamil lyricist Vairamuthu

The #Metoo movement is gaining impulse in India. Several hidden skeletons are tumbling out of the closets. Many senior journalists and big names of the Indian media industry have been called out for harassing women. In another such case, the renowned Tamil lyricist, Vairamuthu has also been accused of sexual misconduct.

Vairamuthu has so far received multiple National Awards for his songs. He is known for his works in films like Raavan, Roja, Kannathil Muthamital and Dharma Durai. He is also the recipient of Padma Bhushan, India’s third highest civilian honour.

An anonymous woman has claimed that ‘Vairamuthu is a sexual predator.’ She, who didn’t want to reveal her identity, had made serious allegations of sexual misconduct against Vairamuthu.

The victim had shared the story with a journalist, Sandhya Menon, who took to Twitter to share the horrific experience.

Singer Chinmayi Sripaada on Monday took to Twitter to endorse the allegations of sexual harassment against Tamil poet-lyricist Vairamuthu after several users on Twitter accused him of inappropriate conduct and sexual abuse.

She also took to Twitter to reveal her horrifying story as part of the #MeToo movement.

In a series of tweets, the singer alleged that an organiser at a concert in Switzerland had asked her to meet the poet at his hotel in Lucerne. “He [organiser] told me to cooperate,” Sripaada tweeted. “I refused. We demanded to be sent back to India. He said: ‘You won’t have a career!”

She alleged that, in another incident, the poet threatened to make false claims about her when she turned down his request to sing at an event. Sripaada said Vairamuthu said he “will tell [a politician] you spoke ill of him on stage, yelled at me and kept the phone down”.

On October 10, Vairamuthu took to Twitter to share his side of the story.

Vairamuthu’s statement on Twitter

Roughly translated his Tweet read, “Shaming innocent people has become a fashion these days. I have been shamed on several occasions recently. This is one among them. I do not lend an ear to anything that is not true. Time shall reveal the truth.”

While Chinmayi, her husband and actor Rahul Ravindran, actor Siddharth, singer Shakthishree Gopalan and a few others have come out in support of her and her allegations against Vairamuthu there are many still who have chosen to remain tight-lipped about the entire incident.

Rahul Gandhi caught lying about the violence in Gujarat directed towards non-Gujaratis

We have reported earlier on the violence that has erupted in Gujarat against non-Gujaratis following the rape of a 14-month old infant. Many migrants were reported to have fled the state in wake of the targeted violence against them. Gujarat Minister Pradeepsinh Jadeja was forced to appeal to those who have left to come back asserting that the situation had been brought under control.

Congress President Rahul Gandhi, while speaking at poll-bound Rajasthan, spoke on the matter and used the spate of violence to target Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

It is quite hypocritical of Rahul Gandhi to attack Narendra Modi over the matter as the violence was reportedly perpetrated by those associated with the Congress party. The Police in Gujarat had confirmed that Congress leaders had instigated violence against non-Gujaratis in the state.

Congress MLA Alpesh Thakor was himself seen in videos instigating mobs to commit acts of violence. Furthermore, members of Alpesh Thakor led Thakor Sena were arrested by the Police in connection with the violence that ensued. If that wasn’t bad enough, the Congress MLA has announced that he will sit on an indefinite fast from the 11th of October demanding the withdrawal of charges against the riot accused and the immediate release of those arrested by the Police.

Under such circumstances, it is extremely dishonest of Rahul Gandhi to attack Prime Minister Modi over an incident where Congress leaders are known to have been involved. A Congress MLA is even batting for the riot accused. But given Rahul Gandhi’s track record, it is hardly surprising that he would choose to attack Modi for an incident allegedly perpetrated by those associated with the Congress party.

Did Kerala’s Communist Government try to pickpocket Hindus?

Generally speaking, when governments want things, they can just snatch them away. But you can’t do that too much, or you might invite a public uprising. Especially when your objective is to seize somebody’s religion by force.

There is a second, more roundabout approach which our ‘democratic’ Indian state uses to take matters of Hindu religion into its own hands. Directly taking over Hindu temples and crushing them might look bad. So you seize the temple and hand over the keys to a “Board”. The “Board” is a quasi-government organization that will have some measure of independence. On paper.

As days pass, the ruling party and its cronies take over the Board, one tiny rule at a time. The Board works on the inside to hollow out the character of the temples and strip them of their Hindu character until there is nothing left.

In Kerala, this job is carried out by the so-called Devaswom Board. Observe here one little baby step by the Communist government of Kerala to pickpocket Hindus.

header.png

This extract from a July 6, 2018 notification from the Government of Kerala recently started to go viral on the internet. As you can see, the notification removes the requirement that the Devaswom Board should be headed by a Hindu!

Issued in July 2018 and came to notice only in October. Which means they really thought they were getting away with it.

Much annoyed CNN-News18 reports that “BJP and other Parivar outfits stoked a controversy” over this issue. Observe how the blame is shifted to the BJP, with its grand total of 0 MPs and 1 MLA from Kerala, while the ruling Communist government of the state gets a free pass.

And CNN-News18 goes on further to state that:

Untitled.png

Oh, it was just a ‘confusion’.  A teeny tiny oversight by the government of Kerala. Those poor babies might make a mistake or two now and then, but rest assured that their hearts were always made of gold. Can we ever forgive the BJP and other Parivar outfits for stoking a controversy over a mistake made by the little angels who run the Kerala government?

This is the same sensationalist Indian media that can discern a Hindutva hand behind almost anything. Remember how Modi was caught trying to take over Christmas by celebrating Atalji’s birthday, which coincidentally also happens to be on Dec 25? Deep-rooted conspiracy on part of Atalji in choosing to be born on that day. Every day, the media and opposition uncover another conspiracy by BJP to undermine Muslims in India, from Modi not wearing a skull cap to not wearing enough green outfits. Remember when the New York Times discovered a Hindutva conspiracy behind the textile ministry promoting handloom sarees and even minister Smriti Irani’s personal choice to wear sarees?

No, all that was hard-hitting journalism. A crystal clear notification from the government of Kerala removing the requirement that the Devaswom Board must be headed by a Hindu? Well, that’s just a ‘confusion’.

The notification came in July. It is October now. The Kerala Government now says that it was just a mistake. And considering the kind of clout that Communists enjoy in our media, they will most likely get the benefit of the doubt. In fact, hardly any mainstream media, at least in the English language, even reported this event.

Imagine if a ‘mistake’ like this had happened with respect to another religion.

This reminds me of another horrendous ‘mistake’ made by the Government of Kerala some years ago. At the time in 2013, it was minor children who were at the losing end of that one.

Untitled.png

The circular allowed child marriage in the Muslim community in Kerala based on a mysterious “Muslim Marriage Act, 1957.”

The only problem? No such “Muslim Marriage Act, 1957” exists in India!

Untitled.png

The “Muslim Marriage Act, 1957” based on which the govt of Kerala issued a circular exists in Jamaica, not India!

Another ‘confusion’. Shame on anybody who tried to stoke a controversy over this.

When the British were taking over India, they didn’t actually fight that many wars. Instead, they signed networks of treaties all over India, installed puppet rulers who gave them special trading rights and created a patronage network to suck out the wealth of the country. In India, the government uses the same methods to suck the life force out of Hindu society.

And there are two things that the Indian state is particularly good at. Oppressing Hindus as a community and oppressing Muslim girls and women. Both for the benefit cum appeasement of Islamic patriarchy.

Accuser rubbishes Chetan Bhagat’s claims, says he crossed professional boundaries

Author Chetan Bhagat, who was recently accused of unwanted and unwelcome advances amounting to harassment, today said that after apologising for the messages he had sent to the woman years ago, he and his family is now harassed because of the allegations. In a Facebook post earlier today, Bhagat has tried to make people aware of the #FakeMeToo movement where people with a personal vendetta against him could be out to get him.

He said that in his long career, he may have upset a lot of people, who may now take advantage of a movement which has recently taken India by a storm. He accepts that he did send the messages to a girl he was attracted towards but he is not a harasser and never will be. In other tweets which had emerged of him communicating to an erotica writer, he explains he was just trying to know her better as a writer he likes to study people behaviour. He then shared samples of her writing, which she had sent him as a manuscript a couple of years ago, following which the said conversation between the two had taken place. However, a mob fury has been unleashed on him and it is taking a toll on his personal life, even as he chooses to remain silent in a bid to help the movement.

However, more details have emerged in the case as the girl who had originally accused him of sending inappropriate texts has furthered her allegations and said that it was not just any ‘girl’ he was trying to ‘woo’ but it was her, a journalist, who had met him in a professional capacity.

In a screenshot of WhatsApp conversation that was shared, the girl, purportedly the one whom Bhagat sent the inappropriate text, said that it wasn’t a “serendipitous friendship that he’s painting it as.” She says that she had decided to let it go without further clarifications but “now that he’s made himself out as a victim who is being ‘harassed’ I’m obliged to make it clear that HE was the one hounding a JOURNALIST.” She further accused Bhagat of repeatedly transgressing a professional equation. She said that Bhagat is riding on a sympathy wave he created by saying that the screenshots leaked are a failed attempt at flirting, without clarifying he was talking to a journalist on a professional level.

Twitter user @AGirlOfHerWords further added that yet another journalist-writer was made to feel uncomfortable by Bhagat as he allegedly kept talking about the length of her skirt.

The #MeToo movement on social media has taken the country by a storm with many big industry names like Alok Nath, Rajat Kapoor, Varun Grover and comedians like Tanmay Bhat and Gursimran Khamba, co-founders of All India Bakchod being accused of sexual misconduct. Journalists like Prashant Jha and film director Vikas Bahl and many, many more have been named as perpetrators of harassment.

‘The Wire’ makes a #MeToo list, leaves out their own founding editor and National Herald editor

The #MeToo movement has gathered steam in India and several powerful people have been outed. Women have come out in scores to narrative their ordeal of sexual harassment and workplace harassment suffered at the hands of men in power. Among those accused, were several members of the All India Bakchod (AIB) comedy team, media persons, actor Alok Nath and even politicians like MJ Akbar.

Several media houses, including Opindia.com, have doggedly reported many of the stories. The leftist propaganda website The Wire, in fact, tweeted an entire thread of their articles covering the #MeToo movement.

However, there is a catch.

In the entire thread tweeted by The Wire, it conspicuously misses out two vital names against whom allegations of sexual harassment were hurled.

In the course of the last few days, two women came forward and accused The Wire’s co-founder and founding editor Siddharth Bhatia. In another instance, a woman took to Facebook and accused the editor of Congress mouthpiece National Herald of sexual harassment. The victim also questioned whether Congress would now throw out the concerned editor.

The Wire, while sharing a link to their “extensive coverage” of the #MeToo movement has conspicuously failed to mention their own editor who has been accused in the #MeToo campaign.

Siddharth Bhatia took to Twitter after the allegations and denied the charges made against him. As did many others who The Wire has covered. One wonders why what is good for the goose is not good for the gander. If The Wire thought covering those stories were appropriate, why then would they leave out the names of their own founding editor and that of the Congress mouthpiece National Herald.

The Wire has had a complicated relationship with the truth thus far. The publication is known to peddle half-truths and whole lies as a force of habit with a long list to their credit. The Wire, which is being sued for defamation often publish articles that read like Hurriyat press statements. Their article has in the past incited violence. They were recently slammed by the CBEC for peddling fake news. They were blamed by a stand-up comedian for spreading lies in his name. Have peddled ‘data’ from dubious organisations. Was slammed by cricketer Mohammad Kaif for bringing caste into cricket. Has a video series that regularly obfuscates. Its journalists are abusive trolls and people who share communally sensitive fake news. They have in the past tried to rationalise the 1993 bomb blast. Conducted a hit job against Sri Sri Ravi Shankar. Defended Chidambaram’s 20:80 gold scheme that benefitted private players like scamster Mehul Choksi. The Wire is a portal where the Editors tell their journalists to not out “Dalit activists” who heckled her. Where their contributors are accused of sexual harassment and their journalist’s conduct drove a female journalist to commit suicide. They had shamelessly compared the Indian Army General to General Dyer.

Earlier, Rahul Gandhi had shared The Wire’s comprehensively debunked hit job on Piyush Goyal with some caustic comments without realising his self-goal perhaps. He is no stranger to self-goals too. They had conducted a hit job against Amit Shah’s son Jay Shah hitjob which was debunked by us comprehensively and the portal responsible for that hitjob is facing a 100 crore defamation suit, in which the court has already mentioned that a prima facie case exists against the portal. They had also recently conducted a hit job against Amit Shah which was debunked by us.

It is apparent that The Wire’s editorial standards are near absent. After all, it is run by an Editor who had earlier shelved the Robert Vadra land scam story for 7 months for no good reason. This latest lie is just a reflection of their integrity.

In fact, not so long ago he had done exactly the same when we at OpIndia have preemptively busted an imminent hitjob against the Finance Minister, Arun Jaitley. After our article, ‘The Wire’ had conceded that “there was not much of a story to pursue after all“, which is why they had dropped the story after receiving a response from Jaitley and his daughter’s firm. Mr Rahul Gandhi had then proceeded to plug the very article where ‘The Wire’ had admitted to no impropriety on the part of Arun Jaitley, in a bid to tarnish his image. We had then also speculated whether Rahul Gandhi actually knew of the imminent hitjob.

It is surprising, that after the numerous lies that have been called out, The Wire still pretends to hold the moral high ground as far as journalistic standards are concerned. Similarly, it also surprising that while their own founding editor has been accused of harassment, The Wire is now taking the moral high ground by not only claiming that they are ‘extensively covering’ the #MeToo campaign but doing so while brazenly omitting to mention their editor.

#MeToo: Several women allege sexual harassment by Union Minister and then Editor MJ Akbar

Union Minister of State for External Affairs and former editor of The Telegraph, M.J. Akbar, has been accused of sexual harassment by multiple people online in India’s version of #MeToo movement that is currently going on. In what appears to be a pattern, Akbar is alleged to have interviewed female journalists in hotel rooms, asking them to sit on the bed and making them feel extremely uncomfortable.

One of the first allegations against Akbar was made by journalist Priya Ramani. In an article for Vogue in 2017, Ramani wrote that a particular editor invited her for an interview to his flat. During the interview, she was offered a drink and the editor sang old Hindi songs to her after inquiring about her music preferences. She wrote, “You’re an expert on obscene phone calls, texts, inappropriate compliments and not taking no for an answer. You know how to pinch, pat, rub, grab, and assault. Speaking up against you still carries a heavy price that many young women cannot afford to pay. Sometimes you are inconvenienced when the stories get out and you are asked to take a time out.” It was only during the #MeToo storm brought about by the expose of Utsav Chakraborty and other comedians and journalists that Ramani confirmed that she was referring to Akbar.

Since then, multiple people have come forward with their allegations against M.J. Akbar. Writer Prerna Singh Bhindra accused him of making her life hell at work and passing lewd remarks at her. Journalist Harminder Baweja remarked that many journalists are sure to have an ‘MJ’ story.

Ghazala Wahab, in an article for The Wire, described in vivid detail the horror that she allegedly went through working for the Asian Age under Akbar. She claims that she was sexually harassed on an extremely regular basis and that Akbar even used psychological tactics to coerce her into having his way with her physically. She says that she was called to Akbar’s room every day and he would make attempts to paw at her and touch her inappropriately. Eventually, she had to quit her job to escape the terror that she was experiencing at work. She also remarks, “I also frequently heard office gossip about his affairs with sub-editors/ reporters or that in every regional office of the Asian Age he had a girlfriend.” She also mentions that she had heard people refer to the Asian Age office as Akbar’s harem.

Another freelance journalist, Kanika Gahlaut, who has worked with Akbar in the past describes a similar pattern of behaviour. She told The Indian Express, “One did hear, from the beginning, from before we joined that MJ (Akbar) had a glad eye, and we were forewarned”. Akbar “did it to everyone,” she said. She further said that she was invited to a hotel by Akbar as well. But since she was aware of Akbar’s reputation for sexual misconduct, she agreed to come but did not show up. She later made an excuse and claims that he never bothered her and never had to face any consequences.

The allegations against M.J. Akbar are serious and demand further investigation into the matter. If found to be true, it speaks of a regular pattern of criminal behaviour and he should have no place in any position of power. Thus far, he has not issued any statement in this regard, who is currently attending the India-West Africa Conclave in Nigeria.

Kolkata HC dismisses petition challenging Mamata Banerjee government’s decision to give funds to Durga Puja Committees

0

In a sign of relief to the Mamata Banerjee government, the Calcutta High Court on Wednesday refused to entertain a plea challenging the West Bengal government’s decision to give Rs 10,000 each to 28,000 Durga puja committees in the state.

According to the reports, the court had brought an interim stay to the disbursal of funds on October 5 but the PIL was dismissed on Wednesday by the High Court allowing the state government to disburse funds to the puja committees.

A division bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Debasish Kar Gupta and Justice Sampa Sarkar said that the legislature is the appropriate forum to decide on expenditure incurred by the state government.

The High Court also stated that the judiciary does not want to interfere in the government’s decision to disburse funds to Durga puja committees at this stage. However, the bench said that the court can interfere at a later stage when the scope arises.

Advocate General Kishore Dutta argued before the bench that the funds given by the state government are being used for promoting community safety under the Safe Drive and Save Life campaign and not for any religious purpose. Advocate Datta also presented documents, showing the creation of a new head for grants to puja committees by the Finance Department of the West Bengal government.

The petitioner’s counsel had reportedly argued that giving money for a religious event from the public exchequers is against constitutional provisions. He argued that the disbursing of funds to Durga Puja committees was a ‘dole’ and had no public purpose.

The Mamata Banerjee’s government decision to disburse funds to Durga Puja committees faced wrath from Muslim clerics and prominent Imams of the state. The influential Imam of Kolkata, Pirzada Taha Siddiqui of Furfura Sharif has slammed the decision and had organised a rally against the West Bengal government for granting funds to the Hindu Community.

We had earlier reported regarding a group of influential Imams and scholars from across the state, extremely close to the Chief Minister, had taken out a protest rally against the government and demanded hike in stipend to Imams and State funds for at least 10,000 Madrasas across the state.

Swami Paripoornananda set to formally join BJP, may even be the ‘face’ of the party in Telangana, claim reports

0

Media reports have claimed that Swami Paripoornananda, head of the Kakinada Sri Peetham will lead BJP’s campaign in the upcoming Telangana polls. In what is being seen as an attempt to create a parallel of Yogi Adityanath’s political success in the south, many reports have emerged claiming that BJP may soon announce Swami Paripoornananda formally joining the party.

BJP president Amit Shah reportedly met the spiritual leader in New Delhi on Monday. As per reports, Paripoornananda also met BJP general secretary Ram Madhav and UP CM Yogi Adityanath to discuss ‘future plans’. A report in The New Indian Express has claimed that there are rumours within the party that Paripoornananda will be announced as the BJP’s chief ministerial candidate in Telangana for the upcoming assembly elections.

“We held detailed deliberations on dharma and values of the country. We also discussed future plans. All decisions are to be made by Amit Shah, I will do whatever he wants me to do. The guidelines too would be announced by Amit Shah. I have no personal interests.” Paripoornananda was quoted as saying after meeting Shah.

The state of Telangana is in a limbo, after its chief minister Chandrashekhar Rao, 8 months before his term ends, called for early elections. There were reports of BJP aligning with Chandrasekhar’s TRS, but Amit Shah had made it clear in September that BJP will go alone in elections. As per recent announcements by the election commission of India, Telangana will hold assembly elections on December 7, along with Rajasthan.

Reports citing internal sources within BJP also claim that Paripoornananda might be pitched against AIMIM’s Asaduddin Owaisi, who is the incumbent MP from Hyderabad Lok Sabha seat.

Swami Paripoornananda has a great appeal in the Hindu population of Telangana and also enjoys support from organizations like VHP and Bajrang Dal. His inclusion in the party is expected to be beneficial in creating BJP’s political hold in the southern state.

In July, Swami Paripoornananda was barred from entering Hyderabad, for alleged ‘incendiary comments.’ The order was suspended in August by the High court later. In September, Swami Paripoornananda was welcomed by thousands of his supporters in a huge public rally along the Vijayawada-Hyderabad national highway. Addressing the people, he had said that the KC Rao government of Telangana is anti-Hindu and even if they had managed to extern him for 55 days, he will be there for another 55 years. Several BJP leaders were also present with him. BJP MLA NVSS Prabhakar has stated at that time that he has already told in the floor of the assembly that Telangana needs a leader like Yogi Adityanath and only time will decide when he comes into politics.

It is being speculated in media that as Paripoornananda will be in his Ashram in Kakinada for Navaratri celebrations, his formal inclusion and announcement of CM candidature will be done after Navaratri.

UP: Yogi Government cancels recruitment of 4000 Urdu teachers started during Akhilesh government

The Uttar Pradesh government under Yogi Adityanath has cancelled the recruitment of 4000 Urdu teachers initiated by the previous administration. The government has reportedly halted the recruitment because it believes there are sufficient Urdu teachers already. The announcement was made by Additional Chief Secretary of Basic Education Department of Uttar Pradesh.

The recruitment process began in December, 2016 during the Akhilesh Yadav led Samajwadi Party regime. Applications were submitted till January, 2017 and the counseling process was to begin in March the same year. However, as soon as BJP came to power, the Yogi Adityanath led government halted the recruitment process.

As per reports, the candidates had filed a petition against the Uttar Pradesh Basic Education Board in the High Court following which the Court had ruled in favour of the applicants and directed the government to complete the recruitment process. However, as per reports, a review petition will soon be filed against the order by the state government.

As per Jagran, there are currently 15800 Urdu teachers in Uttar Pradesh while students number at approximately 87000. Thus, the numbers indicate that there are 2 teachers for every 11 students. The state government considers that there are already more Urdu teachers than what is required and more teachers of the subject are not needed. The government is expected to make these arguments in the High Court in defense of its decision to scrap the recruitment process.

Kerala: Catholic Federation threatens that nuns will be thrown out if they continue protest against Bishop Franco

0

The Nun rape case has been taking horrific turns day by day, as now the Changanacherry-based Catholic Federation of India, an independent body consisting of followers of Catholic Church is all set to launch a protest demanding the removal of nuns who have spoken out against the former bishop of Jalandhar diocese.

According to reports, the president of the federation P P Joseph has alleged that the convent has become a camp for people who are working against the interest of the Catholic Church and asked to remove the nuns who are staying at the Missionaries of Jesus convent in Kuravilangad.

“If the Save Our Sisters (SOS) begins the second phase protest against the Catholic church, we will launch our protest to oust the nuns from the convent,” Catholic Federation of India President P P Joseph told media.

Joseph went on to allege that terrorist groups and anti-social groups are behind the agitations against the Catholic church. However, a press statement by the Catholic Bishops Conference of India (CBCI) said that top officials from the Vatican have been following developments in Kerala.

“We were assured that the Holy See is closely following developments and is awaiting the result of a police investigation. We reiterated our confidence in the Judicial system of India, and trust the full truth will emerge and justice will be done for all,” according to the statement.

Franco Mulakkal, Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Jalandhar, is said to have raped a nun at a guest house in Kuravilangad in May 2014 and exploited her sexually on several other occasions. The nun has registered a complaint in June this year and has been allegedly threatened by the accused of doing so. The congregation has also stood by the rape accused and referred to him as an “innocent soul”. We had also reported that Kerala MLA PC George had called the alleged rape victim a ‘prostitute’.

Bishop Franco Mulakkal was arrested by the police officials on September 21st after the investigating team finally found evidence that linked him in the sexual harassment case. The Kerala High Court has rejected bail plea of accused Bishop and also pointed out the availability of evidence to pursue the case and evidence shows that there are materials that prima facie show that the allegations against the Bishop are true and serious.
