Haryana: AAP leader offers Rs 20 lakhs to BJP leaders to get raped by 10 people

0

The Nation’s conscience was shaken up a few days ago the heinous rape in Rewadi, Haryana. While the demands for a quick investigation gathered steam, Haryana Aam Aadmi Party leader Naveen Jaihind thought it was a good idea to politicise the heinous incident with a comment that would not be considered civilised by any stretch of the imagination.

Referring to the amount of ₹2 lakhs that was offered to the victim, he said that the BJP government has set a price of ₹2 lakhs on the victim. The amount was offered to the 19-year-old girl under the Haryana Victim Compensation Scheme, 2013, which was subsequently returned by the family.

The Haryana chief of AAP went on to say that BJP leaders should get themselves raped by 10 people and his party will pay them ₹20 lakhs as compensation. Commenting that the Manohar Lal Khattar-led BJP government has completely failed on the women security issue, he offered ‘₹ 20 lakh to any BJP leader who gets raped by 10 people’.

‘Our chief minister Khattar has become a Dhritarashtra. The government has completely failed. ‘Kaurava’ rule going on in the state,’ Jaihind added while speaking to a journalist. He said that the family of the victim wants justice, not compensation of ₹2 lakhs.

Navin Jaihind is the convenor of Aam Aadmi Party in Haryana, in June this year party had said that he will be CM candidate of AAP in the 2019 assembly elections.

The girl was abducted from Kanina town on 12th September when she was on her way to coaching classes. She was brought to Naya Gaon 40 km away in a car where she was gang-raped in a room. Haryana police have arrested three people connected to the case, including one of the main accused. The hunt for the other 2 suspects is on, police have also offered a reward of ₹1 lakh for any info about the suspects.

Mumbai Congress demands reservation for North Indian backward communities in Maharastra

0

The Mumbai Congress headed by Sanjay Nirupam has demanded reservations in education and employment for migrants from North India belonging to different backward classes living in Mumbai.

According to the reports, Sanjay Nirupam, president of the Mumbai Congress Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Monday and submitted a three-point memorandum and appealed for reservations in the state for SCs, STs and OBCs from North Indian. He said that these people are being given reservations in other parts of the country but not in Maharastra.

“People belonging to multiple castes have migrated from north India to Mumbai in search of employment. These include people from more than 30 different castes like Vishwakarma, Kurmi, Koiri, Pal, Kanojia, Gupta, Chaurasia, Maurya and Rajbhar who have made Maharashtra their homes for over two-three generations now”, Sanjay Nirupam said.

He further said that these people are yet to be recognised as ‘backward’ and denying reservation to them will be a violation of their fundamental rights. He added that the country should have uniform rules which can be implemented in all states.

“The government should introduce a new system in place wherein only a domicile certificate shall be considered as the mandatory criteria for allotting a caste certificate as opposed to the present complicated system in which old records and proofs are demanded,” Nirupam added.

Reportedly, CM Fadnavis was patient enough to listen to the demands and promised to take appropriate action in the matter as these issues fall under the Central government and had legal ramifications.

The memorandum was signed by 25 prominent members of various North Indian OBC communities in the state backing the demands.

Columnist slams Shekhar Gupta’s article on the Rafale deal

Shekhar Gupta recently wrote an article in his digital venture ThePrint titled ‘There is a humongous scam in the Rafale deal, it is called stupidity.’ The article attempted to slam the BJP government over the Rafale deal which it termed as a ‘Pusillanimous, unimaginative and unsuccessful defence purchase.’

Columnist Mihir Shar had shared a tweet thread on how the article by Shekhar Gupta was riddled with false claims and carries several factual inaccuracies. Shah said that far from being ‘hard-hitting’ and ‘incisive’ the article was, in fact, wrong in several claims.

The article by Gupta started with claiming that any teenaged kid interested in defence, with the help of a smartphone, can tell the details of the Meteor missile system coming with the Rafale jets and the modern-day arms markets maintain no secrets about platforms, weapons and accessories. To which, Shah replied that the teenage nerds that Gupta is referring to can know only the advertised details and facts available online in Wikipedia and other such platforms. He added that the actual details of a weapon’s capabilities, performance levels and specs.

In a subtle manner, Shah pointed out that if all the information about the aircraft and its defence system is available so readily, why is the opposition incessantly demanding the government to divulge it. Gupta’s article has claimed that the only reason behind the Modi government is not sharing the details of the deal is arrogance and the BJP is in-fact, thinking, “How can anyone question us in a defence deal? Are we like Congress in the Bofors decade?”. The article states that all spendings by the government are subject to parliamentary scrutiny and it is the BJP’s arrogance that is citing a ‘secrecy clause’ in a 10Billion USD deal between two democratic governments.

Shah further states that ‘parliamentary scrutiny’ does not mean public release and even if a parliamentary standing committee wants to vet the deal, they will have to refrain from releasing details to the public.

Shah further adds that if specific members of parliament want a private briefing over the Rafale deal, as pointed out by columnist Abhijit Iyer-Mitra in his tweet, they would have to obtain an OSA clearance, which is a long and thorough national security clearance procedure. Iyer-Mitra had pointed out earlier that though the security clause in the deal permits briefing to a number of MPs, in reality, politicians will not opt for it because of the cumbersome security clearance procedure that interferes with that privacy and restricts their activities.

Additionally, Shah points out that the private briefing is a privilege and not a right and thus is subject to the government’s discretion. The government is free to deny such briefing citing national security issues, which, Shah states, limits the options available for the Congress to exploit the issue politically and public support is not very much in favour of the party at the moment.

Mihir Shah further states that the issues of ‘audit scrutiny’ raised by the article are also baseless as the CAG is already auditing the contract. Further, the article’s claim that ‘all the procedures like Cabinet Committee on Security approval were bypassed in sealing the deal is false because a CCS approval is not needed for signing a MoU. It is needed for the intergovernmental agreement and it was obtained then.

Shah further refutes the claim made by the article that the government is giving the excuse that HAL did not have the back-end infrastructure and states that the government never made that claim. Raksha Mantri Nirmala Sitharaman had explained that the reason for HAL not getting to manufacture 108 jets as per the previous deal was the negotiations between Dassault and HAL breaking down.

The article also states that the government is using the ’emergency purchase alibi’ to state that the Indian Air Force badly needed the deal to go through while the IAF has been struggling with lack of needed flight squadrons for almost 15 years now. Shah refutes this insinuation by stating that the Rafale deal is not the only way the government is attempting to strengthen its air force with.

Shah also disagreed with Gupta’s claim that India is yet to see any private sector company making anything major for the military. He states that the private sector is doing really well in defence manufacturing and robust manufacturing capabilities take years to build. He gave several examples of defence equipment and weapons systems that have been manufactured by Indian companies like the TATA, L & T and Godrej.

Shah expertly refutes the claims and allegations made by the article and concludes that though the previous governments did have a role to play in making Indian private sector manufacturers reach the capability levels at which they are now, the Modi government must be applauded for the aggressiveness it has shown in bring along global partnerships and giving Indian manufacturers the much-needed boost.

India gets access to two Bangladeshi ports, will boost connectivity with North-Eastern region

The central government’s efforts to enhance connectivity between the North-Eastern region and rest of the country has received a shot in the arm after the Bangladeshi cabinet approved a proposed agreement with India enabling India to use the Chattogram and Mongla ports for goods movement to the North-East.

Md Shafiul Alam, Cabinet Secretary of the Bangladesh government said that the agreement will be effective for five years with a provision of auto-renewal for another five years and either of the countries can cancel it with a prior six-month notice. “The decision is another step in improving the friendly relations between Bangladesh and India”, he added further.

“A draft of the communication network being built for connectivity between the Chattogram and Mongla ports has been approved for India’s signing. One of the provisions says that Nepal and Bhutan can be added to the agreement if they wish,” he said.

The agreement will provide India access to Bangladeshi ports to carry goods to the landlocked North Eastern states in a very short time. Alam said that, however, India would have to follow the international rules and General Agreement on Tariff and Trade (GATT) as well as Bangladeshi laws and rules in carrying the goods. The agreement suggested that Bangladesh will collect the charges, fees and carrying cost according to GATT principle in addition to regular duty and taxes. Reportedly, only Bangladeshi vehicles and vessels will be used to carry the Indian goods inside Bangladesh.

According to Dhaka Tribune, Four routes were suggested for the goods movements which are – Chittagong Port/ Mongla Port-Agartala via Akhaura, Chittagong/Mongla-Daouki via Tamabil, Chittagong/ Mongla-Sutarkandi via Sheola and Chittagong/Mongla-Bibekbazar via Simantapur.

The Chattogram port (earlier known as Chittagong) is the busiest seaport on the coastline of Bay of Bengal, which handles around 90% of import-export trade of Bangladesh.  Mongla port is the second largest port of the country and it is located in Bengal Delta.

The proposed draft said that Bangladeshi officials will use the tracking systems like global positioning system (GPS), e-lock and e-seal to identify the goods carrying vessels.

On 6th June 2015, Ministry of Shipping, Road and Highways of India and Ministry of Shipping of Bangladesh had signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the proposed route to northeastern states of India via Bangladesh. The agreement involves a multi-modal transport system involving waterways, roadways and railways.

The work on a rail link between Akhaura rail station in Bangladesh and Agartala rail station in India was started earlier this month and this 15 km rail link is expected to be operational by next year. This rail line will provide the rail link between the two countries.

Congress workers detained in Gujarat during assembly gherao march for creating a ruckus: Reports

0

As per reports, workers of the Congress party have been detained during its Khedut Aakrosh rally and assembly gherao march in Gandhinagar, Gujarat for creating a ruckus. The detained workers have been reportedly taken to Karai Police Academy. The rally was organized by the Congress party on the first day of the two-day monsoon session to demand a complete waiver of crop loans.

The Congress party had also given a formal notice for a no-confidence motion against the Vijay Rupani led BJP government in the state claiming that it had failed to deliver on the issues of farmer loan waiver, healthcare, education facilities, employment opportunities among others.

Rajeev Satav, in charge of the Congress party in Gujarat, claimed that the BJP was now afraid of his party.

However, as per reports, the rally did not garner the sort of support that the Congress party was expecting. Reportedly, the rally could not begin on time due to the vacant seats at the venue and when the speeches did begin, the crowd numbered at a meagre two thousand despite the best efforts of the Congress leaders.

Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel said that the rally had little to do with the anger of the farmer community and more about Congress’ own annoyance for not having been able to win the previous assembly elections. He said that the Congress party was more interested in taking political mileage than being actually concerned about solving farmers’ problems.

PM Modi announces projects worth over 550 crores in Varanasi, says Kashi was earlier left at the mercy of Gods

The day after his birthday, Narendra Modi addressed a public meeting at Varanasi, his Lok Sabha constituency, and announced development projects worth over Rs.550 crores. In addition to developing transport facilities for Varanasi’s better connectivity to the rest of the country, PM Modi also announced plans to make Varanasi a world-class medical hub.

“Four years ago, we embarked upon the journey to develop Kashi and today, the difference of four years is clearly visible. You people are witness to those times when Kashi was neglected and left at the mercy of gods in the previous regimes,” said PM Modi at the gathering.

Plans for ‘Super-speciality’ hospitals are also on the cards which will provide modern treatment techniques to patients. PM Modi also spoke of the foundations that were laid for the Vedic Science Centre and Atal Incubation Centre in Varanasi.

Narendra Modi began the speech in a local dialect and chanting ‘Har Har Mahadev’. He said during his address,  “I am happy that projects worth over Rs 550 crore have either been launched or the foundation stone has been laid for them today. The development work is not just for Varanasi but for the nearby areas too. We are trying to develop Varanasi while keeping in mind the tradition and culture of the city. The identity which has been associated with the city since forever will not be hampered due to the development.”

“Before becoming the MP from Varanasi, whenever I used to come here, I saw electricity wires hanging down the poles. I used to always think about when will the city be able to get rid of such things. Today, there are less hanging wires that can be seen from these poles. The remaining work is also being done at full speed,” Prime Minister Modi remarked.

Watch: Gujarat Congress leader hits a woman Police officer at a protest rally

0

Gujarat Congress leader Virji Thummar, who had earlier used foul language against Modi and Amit Shah at a gathering supporting Hardik Patel, today pushed a woman PSI outside Gujarat Vidhan Sabha.

Gujarat Congress leaders were protesting for ‘farmers rights’ as ‘Kheduk Akrosh Rally’ outside Gujarat Assembly. However, it soon turned violent as Congress workers clashed with the police and even broke glass of a police van.

The BJP has, however, dismissed the Congress rally as their frustration of not being coming to power in Gujarat despite over two decades of anti-incumbency BJP was facing in the state. Gujarat deputy CM Nitin Patel said that Congress is trying to express anger not not being elected to power under the garb of farmers’ issues.

Jay Panda’s chopper seized by Odisha police – Law and order issue or vindictive politics?

0

In an unusual and unprecedented event, Puri police yesterday seized the Hangar and Helicopter of Indian Metals and Ferro Alloys (IMFA) group, which is owned by Jay Panda’s family. While Jay has gone all gun blazing on Social media saying it’s a vindictive move by Naveen Patnaik to stop his movements in Odisha, the administration is firm on its stance that there may be a procedural lapse by Panda while flying his chopper over Chilika lake and matter is under investigation.

On 15th of September, Jay Panda did fly over Rajhans island. He took off from Bhubaneswar at 08:46 hours. Flew over Chilika-Puri-Konark en route to Garadpur in Kendrapada and reached Bhubaneswar at 13:26 hours. This is corroborated by the ATC at Biju Patnaik International (BPI) airport attested by the airport director Mr S.C. Hota himself. The flight plan was duly submitted and clearance was taken for the flight path. It was flying at the designated height of FL 500 (500 feet) as authorised by ATC. Both the airport director and co-passengers of Jay Panda do confirm that they did not land anywhere near Chilika.

The administration version, however, is a little different. To begin with, there were initial media reports about a seaplane landing in Chilika. It’s worthwhile to mention that, there were plans of a sea aerodrome in Chilika, to which CDA (Chilika Development Authority) had given a written submission on why it will be a threat to the fragile ecology at Chilika. It sees the largest migratory bird population in India during winters and also is a preserved site under Ramsar wetlands convention. A seaplane landing in Chilika can be a threat to the ecological balance and threaten the wildlife. However, the seaplane landing in Chilika was just a media report.

The official FIR, filed by Assistant Conservator of Forests (ACF), CDA, Binod Acharya, mentions a chopper flying over Chilika at a “dangerous height” endangering wildlife and human life. The FIR also mentions that the said event took place at 13:30 hours. Remember, ATC data corroborates that Jay Panda flew over Rajhans at 08:46 hours and by 13:26, he was back in Bhubaneswar. It is not clear, whether it was a seaplane or chopper that was flying over Chilika at 13:30 or if anything was flying at all. The statement from the airport director also says that they are not aware of any other movement over Chilika except Jay Panda’s chopper.

Copy of the FIR

That being said, what is also baffling here is, what is the criminality for which the hangar and the chopper have been seized. ATC establishes that the flight plan along with flight level was approved and authorised. Did Jay Panda deviate from the designated FL and flew dangerously low? FDR (Flight data Recorder – Black box) data can easily corroborate that.

FIR states that the object flew over Chilika at 13:30 hours. ATC data attested by BPI airport director states Jay Panda was back in Bhubaneswar by 13:26 hours. While Puri SP says that the matter is under investigation, what was the hurry in seizing IMFA’s hangar and Jay Panda’s chopper, without substantial proof? They could have taken the FDR for investigation without seizing the entire thing. Also, Chilika isn’t a no-fly zone. Most flights from Vizag and Hyderabad to Bhubaneswar fly over Chilika.

With past history of Naveen’s vindictiveness and relation getting sour between Naveen Patnaik and Jay Panda, this smacks of highhandedness by the administration at the behest of the Chief Minister. Whether, it’s actually Naveen Patnaik, who instructed the turn of events as it happened or Puri police just followed procedure following a filing of FIR becomes immaterial.

The unusual action taken by police does raise eyebrows. State administration targeting Jay Panda through his family run business IMFA isn’t new after all. Earlier in 2017, when the crack between him and BJD became apparent, state government shut down 2 Chromite mines owned by IMFA over flouting environment rules.

Does Naveen Patnaik actually want to restrict Jay Panda’s movement in the state? Is he actually wary of Jay Panda? Only time will tell. However, as we had reported earlier, recently expelled senior member and ex-minister Damodar Rout is trying to get all expelled members of BJD under one roof and create an anti-BJD force. It may be natural that Naveen Patnaik will try to thwart any such threat by nipping them at the bud. However, this high handedness, whether under instruction from Naveen Patnaik or not, will give cannon fodder to Jay Panda’s camp. How the event unfolds politically, remains to be seen.

UPDATE: The events have taken some bizarre turn and BJD MLAs are protesting in front of assembly with posters demanding the arrest of Jay Panda and Abhijit Iyer Mitra who was his co-passenger. This removes any doubt, whatsoever, that these series of events are politically motivated.

Rohit Sharma vs Mohammad Amir: who will win the battle for supremacy?

0

18th June 2017, The Oval, Champions Trophy Final:

India chasing 339 to win, Rohit Sharma opening the batting, Mohammad Amir with the ball in his hand.

First ball- Nearly dragged on by Rohit, but he survives.

Second ball- Left well alone.

Third ball- Fast, swinging in, catching Rohit playing around his front pad, followed by the Umpire raising his finger. India 0/1

—

27th February 2016, Dhaka, Asia Cup (T20 Format):

India chasing a more modest 84 to win, Rohit Sharma opening the batting, Mohammad Amir with the ball in his hand.

First ball- Fast, full, swinging yorker, huge appeal, plumb but Rohit survives thanks to no review system.

Second ball- Fast, swinging in, Rohit playing around the front pad, this time Umpire does raise his finger, India 0/1

—

The two protagonists of those two clashes are set to meet again in Dubai tomorrow and Rohit Sharma will be hoping for a slightly different result this time.

In the absence of Kohli, the responsibility has increased on Rohit who is the standout limited overs batsman in the team. His ability to play the big innings is well recognized, and the three double centuries are a proof of that ability.

However, he hasn’t always found the going smooth against Amir. With India-Pakistan playing very irregularly and only in World Cup, Champions Trophy or Asia Cup, Rohit and Amir haven’t come across each other on too many occasions, but whenever they have, Amir has held the edge, picking Rohit up 3 items in 5 games across different formats.

In ODIs, Amir has bowled 42 balls to Rohit, conceding 18 runs and picking him up once, on that fateful day in Champions Trophy Final.

In T20s, Rohit has faced 7 deliveries from Amir, scoring just a single run, and getting dismissed both times to Amir.

However, Amir is unlikely to get as much movement in Dubai as he got on those two occasions. In the first game against Hong Kong, he got a bit of a shape initially, but Rohit should be able to cope with that. Amir didn’t quite look at his best in that game and in fact, has only picked up 1 wicket in his last 6 ODIs, but a game between India and Pakistan is unlike any other game, it tends to lift performances of the individuals irrespective of their form.

Rohit on the other hand has had a mixed year so far in limited overs cricket, one century each against South Africa and England but little else apart from them. On the flat tracks of Dubai, he will be looking to get some big scores under his belt. Even with Kohli in the side, the team has looked up to the top 3 to make big scores and now, with a lot of uncertainty in the middle order and no Kohli, Rohit will know his wicket is going to be very crucial.

Who triumphs in this battle between the two upfront is very much going to decide the direction of the contest, and we will know that tomorrow after 5 PM (Indian Standard Time).

Supreme Court Adjourns Hearing on PIL against Rafale Fighter Jet

0

Supreme Court on Tuesday adjourned hearing on a PIL which is seeking a stay on the Rafale jet deal between Indian and France. The petition has been filed by advocate ML Sharma, who is known for regularly filing PILs in various cases, many of them frivolous and rejected by the apex court. A bench comprising Justices Ranjan Gogoi, Navin Sinha and K M Joseph adjourned the case till October 10.

Petitioner advocate ML Sharma told the court that he wants to file some additional documents related to the case and therefore he had requested that the matter is adjourned.

“You yourself circulated a letter seeking adjournment on the ground of ill health. Now you are saying that you want to file additional documents. We are simply adjourning the matter to October 10,” the bench hearing the matter said.

In the petition, Sharma alleges that the deal between India and France for the Rafale fighter jets is involved in corruption and he has also alleged that the cancellation of the older tender suggests a conspiracy. The petitioner has asked for an inquiry by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) monitored by the Supreme Court. The petitioner has also requested to cancel the agreement until the completion of an investigation by the SIT.
