West Bengal: India Today sting operation exposes nexus between the ‘syndicate raj’ and TMC

0

A sting operation conducted by India Today has revealed the shocking nexus between the ruling Trinamool Congress led by Mamata Banerjee and government officials with the notorious syndicates in West Bengal. The sting operation conducted by the India Today network has shed light on the thriving ‘syndicate raj’ under the alleged patronage of the Mamata Banerjee.

In the sting video, it can be clearly seen that Soumen Banerjee, husband of Bidhannagar TMC councillor Swati Banerjee and also a syndicate operative, is caught on camera while explaining the nature of the system and working of the ‘syndicate raj’. Banerjee says, “If you protest, it will lead to a bigger problem and vandalism. They are very dangerous people. Their boss is a very big leader of West Bengal. He might become an MLA. He will have everything vandalised. Lockdown or shell out Rs 10 lakh”. In the video, Banerjee along with another syndicate operative Rana Basu demands money from the reporter in return to allow the opening of a restaurant. He also asks the reporter to pay Rs 25,000 to Rana Basu to conduct Durga Puja.

In a second sting, another TMC worker Sushanto Das, who is also a close aide of North Dum Dum’s TMC councillor Bidhan Biswas is seen boasting about his contacts in the TMC and threatening by saying that if somebody buys land from others, then they will create a ruckus. When the reporter questioned him about future interventions by others, he says, “This is our area. We manage everything from the chairman, councillors to building plans. You don’t have to worry about anything”.

This nexus runs deep as Das then went on to introduce his immediate boss Sujoy Das, who in turn takes India Today reporter to the office of Bidhan Biswas, a wealthy TMC councillor. The video clearly explains the modus operandi of the ‘syndicate raj’, where TMC councillor is seen saying that his share of profits would be recovered by selling building material and overseeing construction. His aide Sujoy Das said “Tell him [the reporter] that all construction work should be outsourced to us. That’s our profit. We will profit only if we supply the material”.

Allegedly, the government officials are also involved in this criminal nexus. Interestingly, Harinder Singh, chairman, Dum Dum Municipality, also insists people buy building material from the members of the syndicate. “Local youths (syndicates) would insist that you buy building material like sand and bricks from them. There won’t be any problem. Just assign the job to them,” said Singh.

Chandra Kumar Bose, Vice President of the West Bengal Bharatiya Janata Party said, “Syndicates existed in Bengal earlier as well but in the unorganised sector. Now, they are in the organised sector. I had given credit to Mamata Banerjee for being Chief Minister of a syndicate raj, not of West Bengal”. CPI leader Dinesh Varshney said that if a corporator is asking a person how much money could he offer, it clearly shows it is by force. Anything which is done by force had political patronage”.

Syndicate Raj is the extortion racket which runs the real estate business in the state of West Bengal. A group of hooligans holds enormous control in the areas where the real estate business is thriving. The notorious and criminal ‘syndicates’ came into existence during the Communist government in the 90s, has now become extremely influential in the power structure.

These syndicates are alleged to have state patronage, exerts a complete monopoly over any kinds of construction. Every builder should purchase every construction material from bricks to cement to TMT bars to paints to tiles from these syndicates and also have to share a commission with them. Often the materials are of low quality, but they are sold at premium prices. They also have to hire workers from the syndicates only. This has been the reason for the construction of poor quality infrastructure in the state of West Bengal.

Down the rabbit hole: Aam Aadmi Party and Congress had links to convicted Naxalite

0

The nation is abuzz with news of the massive raids conducted against alleged urban Naxals by the Pune Police on Tuesday in connection with the violence at Bhima Koregaon and an alleged assassination plot to murder Prime Minister Modi. We have reported on the vested interests involved who are now screaming persecution.

However, it appears now that the rabbit hole runs much deeper than we previously imagined. Convicted on charges of sedition for his links to Naxals in 2010, Binayak Sen was sentenced to life imprisonment under sections 124A and 120(B) of the IPC. He was also found guilty under section 8(1) of Chhattisgarh Special Public Security Act. He was given bail by the SC in 2011. As it turns out, he was in the Committee for Police Reforms of the Aam Aadmi Party announced in 2014. Sudha Bharadwaj who was raided yesterday by the Police was also a member of the committee along with Prashant Bhushan who has vehemently criticized the raids. Sen was in the committee for resolving the Naxalite question as well.

Binayak Sen’s wife, Ilina Sen, was a member of the Aam Aadmi Party’s internal Lokpal. Ilina Sen has been a professor at the Mahatma Gandhi Antarrashtriya Hindi Vishwavidyalaya [International Hindi University], Wardha, and at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences. Binayak Sen was invited to TISS to deliver a keynote address as well. Ilina Sen was one among many luminaries who signed the mercy petition for Yakub Memon.

Binayak Sen has links with the Congress party as well. Sen was named a member of the government’s Planning Commission on health in 2011. Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh, Raman Singh, had slammed the decision to include Sen in the panel and wrote to the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh deeming it “shocking and against all norms and propriety”.

Anand Teltumbde, another activist who was raided yesterday, was a member of the Aam Aadmi Party committee for “End to Caste Based Violence”. He was a member of another committee of the party for “Fine Tuning Reservations” along with Yogendra Yadav. Gautam Navlakha had also come out in support of Prashant Bhushan after the latter’s suggestion of a referendum in Kashmir.

Tales of the old testament, territories, technology and the tuna

0

Some Tales have got to be written because as described by the Ex-Member of Parliament in Israel Ms Einat Wilf “What differentiates a human being from other mammals is the Art of Story Telling.” Rightly so, as Indians our faith, belief structure, culture and our traditions are all based on stories and epics passed on to us through generations. This is not the only thing that binds India to Israel. When I got this most unexpected phone call that I have been chosen to represent my State and my political party in a delegation to Israel – the entrepreneur in me jumped with happiness. After all, I was going to the Start-Up Nation-The Land of innovations.

Israel is about half that of Aurangabad but is listed third in NASDAQ soon after two big giants USA and China with about 250 Israeli companies. It’s only when I met the Israelis did I know why- like Indians, they are sharp, intelligent, hardworking and very unlike them – Disciplined! As they say in Israel – Start Fast, Fail Faster, that’s when you succeed fastest. In India, we are yet to teach our kids to fail gracefully.

As a kid I used to read a lot- I read about Judaism, the Holocaust, Hitler and the Anti-Semitism movement but it’s only after my experiences with the Jews the big secret of the Jewish world hit me; it’s the X chromosome that adds the X-Factor to the society. Hugely matriarchal, Jews are identified as “A tribe” by their Jewish mothers. Resilience is in their blood, No wonder when they got reduced to half their population after the Holocaust worldwide, they relived the Babylonian exile and came back to create the state of Israel and yet gave the world the largest number of Noble Laureates.

The entire country has an inherent strength of feministic fervour that simply “works” against all odds, all challenges. It is this strength that made them never give up their language-Hebrew or their Testament yet made them reconcile to the New Testament to Arabic and to English.

I always believed that Judaism is like Hinduism. It’s a way of life. Israel has the Orthodox Jews, the Secular Jews and the Liberal Jews but here I was wrong. Judaism is strongly bound by territories. Judaism is defined by a constant struggle of a Nation to maintain it’s identity. Judaism is not a religion – it’s a tribe of people who are determined to forge their destiny by not forgetting their past.

I am a proud Hindu and believe strongly in the concept of Hindu-Rashtra, where every religion can survive, every being is respected and every opportunity is nurtured. Unlike Israel, Hindus always had a nation of our own, a land that we proudly owned and a civilization that we unassumingly inherited and hence never realised the importance of Territories. The concept of a Nation is what I learnt from Israel. We might have different ideologies, a difference of opinion but we need to be thankful that we have been blessed to have a nation that accepts us as we are, an Identity that defines us, whoever we are and a Pride that binds us as One- India.

Prof. Yonaf, Member of Parliament of the Labour Party told us “When I went to India for the first time I realised what my mother calls Beherat are spices that derive their name from the ancient name of India- Bharat”. Yes, Bharat that adapted itself to influences of the world yet maintained its authenticity. The best examples are found in the cuisine. From the kebabs of Lucknow to the Idlis of Chennai, Indian food is known for its distinct spices(Beherat). Israeli cuisine is also an amalgamation of the best of the world but what I found surprisingly different was a dominance of proteins in their daily diets- green salads, cottage cheese, walnuts, olives, sprouts, eggs & of course tuna.

They say if you want to create an Intelligent Generation feed it Protein; If you want to make a generation dull serve them carbohydrates. India, the land of milk and cereals is hugely Protein deficient today. With the rise of obesity, the diabetes capital of the world also. While the world today is accepting our ancient wisdom of vegetarianism and a hot cooked meal we as a nation are moving towards junk.

There are only two kinds of Israelis I met in Israel, one that has come to India, the other that wants to. This is my India that accepted the Jews even when every single country denied their entry. This is my India that balances between an individualistic and collective society in a spiritual way. This is my India-that maintains strong ties with Israel & Iran; Strong and Opinionated to influence the Geo-Politics of the region. This is my India which is my Pride! Travel tales end with the journey. We get on with our usual lives and our daily chores. Experiences stay. They come back to you in form of memories but I have come back with Lessons for the Indian Youth, for the students and for the entrepreneurs that I would love to spread in my talks, my speeches and my writings.

To sum up, Israel and India are sisters from different Mothers and like them I want my country and my countrymen to develop a blind love for Our Nation- Our Bharat!

Raids on ‘Urban Maoists’: Maharashtra govt has kept MHA in the loop

0

The recent raids conducted on the ‘Urban Maoists’ by the Pune Police, have been carried out by keeping the Ministry of Home Affairs in the loop, reports Republic TV.

The Maharashtra Chief Secretary has been in touch with the Union Home Secretary regarding the arrests of the ‘Urban Naxals’. Reportedly, the Maharashtra Police has raided the premises of the ‘Maoist sympathisers’, only after it received inputs from the Intelligence Bureau. It is also said that the Home Ministry is completely aware of these raids.

The Maharashtra Police seems to have covered all the grounds with respect to the evidence needed to take action against the arrested individuals. Reportedly, the massive nationwide crackdown has been initiated only after it received inputs from both central and state intelligence agencies. The Maharashtra government has been briefing the Centre since the beginning of the raids and also been in constant touch with the Home Ministry officials.

As reported by Republic TV, there could be future raids in the next 24-48 hours, as there are more actionable intelligence available to the police to conduct further raids.

We had earlier reported about the raids conducted by the Pune Police in at least 8 locations in 5 states across the country in connection with alleged Maoist links to a plot to assassinate Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the violence at Bhima Koregaon.

The searches were conducted in the residence of activist P Varavara Rao in Hyderabad, ‘human rights activist’ and ‘journalist’ Gautam Navlakha in Delhi, ‘activists Vernon Gonzalves and Arun Pereira in Mumbai, ‘civil rights’ lawyer Sudha Bhardwaj in Delhi, civil rights ‘activist’ Anand Teltumbde in Goa and ‘activist’ Stan Swamy in Ranchi.

Arrest of ‘Urban Maoists’, how some media outlets have covered it

0

Yesterday, in a massive crackdown, the Maharashtra police had conducted raids in several cities and has arrested alleged Naxal sympathisers on charges of inciting the Bhima-Koregaon violence and indulging in activities that included a plot to assassinate PM Modi. Since then, there has been a surge in related news and updates in the media over the issue. Even the social media is abuzz with views and counter views. Many news portals are running a ‘live update’ stream as the so-called ‘activists’ and their powerful lawyers attempt to get the Supreme Court to intervene in the matter.

However, while many national newspapers and media outlets have maintained a neutral view over the matter there are some newspapers and media portals who have already decided on the ‘innocence’ of the arrested individuals and have started deriding the government’s move as harassment of dissenting voices.

Kolkata based newspaper The Telegraph ran today a big headline titled ‘Absolutely Chilling’ and went ahead to portray how the government has arrested the ‘activists’.

The Telegraph

The frontpage article had given a brief description of the five arrested, though skipping crucial information like how Gonsalves was arrested by ATS in 2007 and with a considerable cache of detonators and explosives were found in his person.

The Mumbai Mirror carried a report where it quoted ‘activists’ like Ramachandra Guha and Arundhati Roy and began with the line, “The nationwide crackdown on civil and human rights activists sparked a widespread political outrage”

Mumbai Mirror report

Leftist propaganda website The Wire ran an editorial titled ‘Midnight knock at democracy’s door’. The article claimed that the arrest of the ‘activists’ is part of a new narrative that is being manufactured to claim that the dissenting voices are actually the enemy within who are not just against the governmnet but also against the nation itself. Among other things, it claimed that the police are getting away with ‘criminalisation of dissent’ and all this is a preparation for 2019 general elections.

editorial piece on The Wire

Another leftist propaganda website The Quint ran an opinion piece by DU professor Apoorvanand, which claimed the arrests as a ‘witch hunt’. It claimed that the Modi governmnet is being insecure and is making people believe in the phenomenon of Urban Naxalism by claiming that dangerous killers are masquerading as teachers and activists.

Apoorvanand’s article in The Quint

Many individuals have expressed their opinions over the arrests but news portals brazenly discrediting the legal system terming the arrests as undemocratic is bizzare, especially when the same outlets never hesitate to brand petty crimes as ‘kanwariya violance’ and are also quick to manufacture a religious angle in crimes that had nothing to do with religious violence.

The great left-liberal Twitter meltdown

0

“Madness, as you know, is like gravity. All it takes is a little push.” – Heath Ledger as The Joker, The Dark Knight.

The recent crackdown on the supposed Naxal sympathisers in connection with the Bhima Koregaon violence as well as assassination plot to murder Prime Minister Narendra Modi has led to a massive meltdown on Twitter of the left-liberals. The first sign of the noose closing down on them is that the suave demeanour gets thrown out of the window.

Founding editor of The Wire Siddharth Varadarajan, referred to a media website as ‘Godi Media’, a wordplay on ‘Modi Media’ where godi stands for ‘lap’, implying the media which sits in the lap of PM Modi.

The term is usually used by trolls to refer to news channels like Republic and anyone who does not conform to the same ideological leaning that people like Varadarajan espouse. To see the former editor of The Hindu use the term shows how the mighty have fallen. Most of them, in the defence of the accused, have ignored glaring facts like Gautam Navlakha having links with notorious ISI funded Kashmiri separatists.

Varadarajan is not the only one to have lost the sense of decorum. The so-called journalists whose primary job is to find out facts are busy dishing out opinions instead of trying to get to the bottom of things.

The assassination plot for Prime Minister Modi is ‘bullsh*t terror plot’ according to NDTV’s Sreenivasan Jain.

And could ‘undeclared emergency’ be far behind?

And Supreme Judge Shekhar Gupta even gave the verdict that these arrests and raids will be tests for the courts for their ‘wisdom and spine’.

And then ‘BJP did it’ narrative.

And a bit of self-promotion never hurts.

It is amusing to see those who usually bat for law taking its due course are up in the arms defending their own and proclaiming them as innocent. Perhaps that is what ‘solidarity’ is all about.

After Atishi Marlena, Ashutosh says he was forced to include his surname to fight 2014 general elections

0

After the recent controversy of Aam Aadmi Party leader Atishi Marlena dropping her surname ‘Marlena’, as it was sounded ‘too Christian’ to contest the next Lok Sabha elections, a similar incident has been alleged to have taken place. This time it is the case of the recently resigned Aam Aadmi Party leader Ashutosh, who has alleged that the party used his surname despite his protest in the 2014 general elections.

A former journalist turned politician Ashutosh in his tweets has alleged Arvind Kejriwal and Aam Aadmi Party that he had been forced to mention his last name when he contested 2014 Lok Sabha election from Chandni Chowk constituency in Delhi. He further said that despite the fact that he is not using his surname in the public, the party chose to include his surname, which was protested by Ashutosh.

He further added that he was advised not to drop his surname as it would be difficult to win because ‘many people of his caste were voters’ in that area. Ashutosh quit the Aam Aadmi Party on 15th August citing personal reasons, but it is believed that he quit the party over differences with Arvind Kejriwal for not selecting him as the party’s choice for the membership of the Rajya Sabha.

Ashutosh contested the 2014 Lok Sabha polls from Chandni Chowk against BJP’s Harsh Vardhan and Congress’s Kapil Sibal. Aam Aadmi Party had contested all the 7 seats from Delhi, failed to register a win even in one seat.

Why should Communists be considered ‘intellectual’ when Communism is just as bad as ISIS

0

Let us suppose you were to pick up a newspaper today and the lead story says that a number of people who operate pro-ISIS social media accounts have been raided and rounded up by the government for questioning. And that the police suspect that there might even be an ISIS plot to assassinate the Prime Minister of India.

Close your eyes for a moment and try to imagine the tone with which this story would be reported. Never mind that many / most / all of those arrested could just be ISIS sympathizers who have not committed an actual crime, such as an act of violence or a direct incitement of violence. Only a court of law can decide that but you know well how the media and the people would talk about the event. That it would be seen overall as a major triumph of counter-terrorism operations.

It makes sense, right? ISIS is a very dangerous terrorist organization. Anybody who sympathizes with them could be up to no good. Better to take no risks, better to interrogate them, to comb through their history. And keep them in jail for as long as possible.

Now let us think about the government crackdown on Communist sympathizers yesterday, from Ranchi to Pune to Mumbai. Think about the reaction of the media, the chattering classes and perhaps even your own. Is it any different? If so, why?

Is it not true that large swathes of Indian territory have been forcibly occupied by violent Communists? What separates the Communist insurgency in Jharkhand or Chhattisgarh from the insurgency of ISIS and Taliban in Iraq, Syria or Afghanistan? Then, how come we have been conditioned to believe that Communist sympathizers are somehow “different” from ISIS sympathizers?

Let alone ISIS or Taliban, the average person on the street is generally delighted when Income Tax officials raid a powerful politician. Because we tend to assume that they are guilty. More often than not, we all know that the politician ultimately gets acquitted by the courts. When that happens, people generally express their frustration at a system that won’t let the “guilty” be punished.

Because it makes sense to us. How else would certain politicians amass their huge wealth, numerous farmhouses and thousands of acres of land?

Communists in India are running a violent, armed insurgency with the stated aim of overthrowing the Indian state. Doesn’t it make just as much sense that they would want to assassinate the Prime Minister of India? In fact, it would be surprising if they didn’t.

The greatest trick that the left pulled on us is conditioning us to believe that Communists are intellectuals. Sample this tweet from a blue tick Twitter account of an “intellectual”, from a person educated at Yale.

Untitled.png

Just think about that for a moment. A terrorist organization is not only equated but considered morally superior to the legitimate Indian state, run by a democratically elected government.

What are the credentials of India’s Communist insurgency? Who made them the voices of the “powerless”? Does this intellectual believe that she has a right to decide who speaks for the powerless? Doesn’t sound like she is giving the “powerless” much of a voice here, no?

However, views like this are distressingly common among the intellectual class. At its core lies the failure of modern civilization to stigmatize Communism for the great evil it is.

Speaking of “violence of the powerful,” the Communists are notorious worldwide for carrying out industrial-scale massacres wherever they are in power. Be it Soviet Russia or North Korea. The total number of people killed by Communists is often estimated to be around 100 million … or 1000 lakh. A body count that boggles the mind. And yet, the dictators who carried out these massacres, from Stalin to Mao, are considered patron saints of dissent, free speech and democracy in India. Their pictures are prominently displayed by alleged “dissenters” and paeans are sung to them. The red flag under which Stalin and Mao and Pol Pot massacred people by the million … so-called “intellectuals” gather under the same banner to tell us that modern India is not democratic enough?

Seriously?

Mao Zedong had his own personal collection of child sex slaves. Defenceless children that he raped on a regular basis. So what? Doesn’t stop our intellectuals from making him an icon of the “powerless.”

What is next? The Ku Klux Klan to lead the fight against racism?

It all comes back to the same core problem. Because we gave the leftists the keys to the universities, the horrors of Communism were edited out of history and shunted out of public discourse. That is how you get people who show up on our TV screens with the red flag with the bloodcurdling hammer and sickle and lecture us on democracy.

I wonder: Do Communists even believe in democracy? The giant cutouts of Stalin that dominate their public events would seem to suggest otherwise.

The other day I happened to read the “origin story” of one such Communist intellectual, on how he found his calling to Communism. It turns out that as a kid in the seventh grade, he received a biography of Stalin as a prize at school.

A biography of a mass murderer given as a prize to an innocent schoolboy, possibly with nobody to interpret and explain to him the amount of evil that Stalin did in the world? This is what happens when we normalize the Communists.

That boy who began with reading a biography of Stalin is now a grown-up Communist, reaching out and spreading the same ideology among others. His name is Anand Teltumbde and he was reportedly one of the people raided yesterday.

Untitled.png

It all began with an unthinking school administration that decided to give the biography of a mass murderer to an impressionable child. This is the price we pay for normalizing Communism.
