Meet Nandini Sundar, the DU professor who is accused of having blood of adivasis on her hand

0

Born in 1967, Nandini Sundar is a professor of sociology at the Delhi School of Economics. She is also the wife of former The Hindu editor Siddharth Varadarajan, who is currently the founding editor of ‘The Wire‘. Nandini Sundar, who still writes for various platforms including her husband’s The Wire, is accused of a tribal man’s murder in Chhattisgarh’s Sukma.

In May 2016, under a fake name ‘Richa Keshav’, Nandini Sundar went to Maoist-hit Bastar along with JNU professor Archana Prasad and Joshi Research Institute’s Vineet Tiwari. She was accused of provoking the villagers against the government. It was claimed that the professors threatened to burn houses if villagers did not support Maoists.

In a letter to the VCs of JNU and DU, Bastar SP said that the Sundar and Prasad tried to instigate the villagers against the police by telling the villagers that their daughters and sisters would not be safe is police camps are set up in the villages.

Letter by Bastar SP

In the above letter, the villagers claim that they talked to Sundar and Prasad and spoke about how the Naxals in the village beat them up and loot their money and ration and harass them. The villagers claim that they are standing united against the Naxals and want the police camps in the village. However, Sundar, Prasad and CPM leader Sanjay Parate who was accompanying them told the villagers that the police and administration will do nothing for the villagers and if they do not help the Naxals, it will in turn only harm them. They urged the villagers to do as the Naxals as them to for their own betterment.

To this, Communist Party of India – Marxist’s Sitaram Yechury even came to the rescue and called the above letter ‘fake’ and called it ‘intimidating tactic’ and ‘curbing and suppressing opposition political parties’.

Later, she reportedly travelled to Nama in Sukma, one of the worst Naxal-affected districts, again as Richa Keshav, and held a meeting. Two days later, Shamnath Baghel, a tribal man, lodged a complaint with the police stating that Sundar (as Richa Keshav) and others asked villagers to not support the police and associate themselves with the Naxalites.

The complaint even mentioned that Baghel was warned of dire consequences for opposing the Naxalites. He mentioned that if he was killed, Sundar and others would be responsible. On 4th November 2016, Shamnath Baghel was murdered.

Inspector General of Police (Bastar Range) SRP Kalluri said that Sundar and others were booked for murder, criminal conspiracy and rioting.

In May 2017, Podiyam Pandu alias Panda, a Maoist had surrendered to the Chhattisgarh Police, Panda had named Nandini Sundar, activist Bela Bhatia and other social activists meet Naxal commanders. According to police, Panda was also familiar with the urban network of Maoists and played a crucial role in arranging meetings between Maoist sympathisers from town with the ultras in the jungle. Panda had claimed he would drive around Sundar and others on a motorbike for meetings with top Maoists like Hidma, who is believed to have masterminded the killings of 25 CRPF jawans in Bastar district of Chhattisgarh’s Sukma last year.

As a mother of all ironies, after the raids conducted to crackdown on the ‘urban Maoists’ nexus, the very Nandini Sundar wrote in The Wire:

“Try as the government might, they will be unable to suppress their voices or use these arrests to chill others. The Emergency lasted two years, Modi’s undeclared Emergency might last longer; but terror finally fails. Democracy and the rule of law will eventually prevail”.

For someone who is accused of threatening tribals to not align themselves with the state and instead support Naxalites, it is indeed peachy for Sundar to write about ‘undeclared emergency’ and how the ‘rule of law’ will prevail. Perhaps for Sundar and the Leftist propaganda website The Wire, ‘rule of law’ refers to the law the Naxalites live by and ‘undeclared emergency’ means the state actively stopping the ultras from going about their ‘job’ as usual?

‘Activist’ Gautam Navlakha raided yesterday, had links with notorious ISI funded Kashmiri separatist

0

Gautam Navlakha, the civil rights activist who was raided by Pune Police yesterday, attended events organized by Ghulam Nabi Fai who was sentenced to two years of jail by the United States of America for concealing the fact that Fai’s organization, Kashmiri American Council (KAC), was funded by Pakistani Spy Agency, ISI, to deliberately tilt USA’s policy regarding Kashmir against India.

US attorney Neil MacBride accused Fai of working as a front for Pakistani intelligence and promoting ISI’s propaganda on Kashmir. Fai admitted that he was receiving funds from the government of Pakistan and did not disclose the fact because he knew it would have a negative impact on his credibility as a supposed independent advocate for Kashmir.

The events organized by Fai had a very obvious anti-India slant and the India scribes and intellectuals often helped portray India as an oppressive occupying force in Kashmir. A resolution adopted at one of its conference organized in 2010 which was attended by Indian intellectuals, including Gautam Navlakha, said that the participants “unanimously” expressed concern over the deteriorating human rights situation in Kashmir and implored the Indian government to withdraw the Army from civilian areas. It also demanded an impartial commission to investigate “killings” in a transparent manner.

Despite the accusations against Fai, Navlakha’s faith in him remained steadfast. “I know Fai. I have enjoyed his hospitality and my conversations with him. Whatever the nature of funding may be, in my eyes his conviction as a Kashmiri remains impeccable,” Navlakha said.

Navlakha did not stop at that. He suggested that the US authorities had magnified the crime that “Fai Sahib” committed and went on to suggest that Fai may have been set up by US authorities at the behest of India.

As per reports, the ISI vetted the list of Indians to be invited at Fai’s events and the names included Justice Sachar and Bhasin Chatterji apart from Gautam Navlakha. Many suspect that the intellectuals were invited at the event by Fai to give Americans the impression that liberals in India are in favour of Kashmir seceding from the Indian union. There are enough hints to suggest that Fai was using them as ‘useful idiots’.

Gautam Navlakha was one of the activists who was raided by Pune Police in connection with the violence at Bhima Koregaon and an alleged assassination plot to murder Prime Minister Modi. The ‘civil society’ has immediately come to their defence and branded the raids an evidence of the undeclared emergency enforced by the Modi government.

Fact Check: Was Biplab Deb really off the mark when he said ‘ducks raise oxygen level in water’?

0

Tripura CM Biplab Deb on 27th August stated to media outlets that he plans to distribute ducklings to locals who live near water bodies so they could rear ducks to produce eggs and the ducks also help in raising the oxygen level in the water. He mentioned that Tripura is not self-sufficient in egg production and he wants to help local villagers to adapt duck farming to meet the state’s demand.

CM Biplab Deb was attending a traditional boat race organised at Rudrasagar, an artificial lake at Tripura’s Neelmahal, the water palace. He stated that he plans to distribute ducklings to boost the rural economy.

As has happened with some of his earlier statements, the statement was soon propagated in the media and many individuals, even media houses began to ridicule and mock his statement. Their claim was Biplab Deb’s statement that ducks help raise the oxygen levels in water is wrong and ridiculous.

Dhruv Rathee’s tweet

Even media houses wasted no time in dissing the Tripura CM’s statement. DNA ran a satirical article titled, “Quackery alert: Biplab deb says ducks can increase oxygen levels in the water bodies’. The article, full of duck-related innuendos and ridicule for the CM entirely dismissed the idea. Many other news articles too, including the one by CNN News18, were entirely dismissive of the idea and were styled as a subtle ridicule and dismissal of the CM’s claim.

While some of the news articles did mention that the CM was speaking about the rural economy and meeting protein requirement of the children in villages, the resultant reaction among readers was negative and dismissive. It was only a while later that truth began to emerge.

ANI quoted scientist A Debbarma of the Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education supporting the CM’s claim. He stated that ducks actually do help in increasing the DO (dissolved oxygen level) in water and farming ducks and fish together is known as integrated farming where the excreta of ducks also helps in growth of fish.

Soon, Deb’s claim was backed by many other experts and it emerged integrated farming is in fact known to benefit farmers in an organic way. On social media too, people questioned the kind of negative reporting and deliberate tarnishing done by media outlets and prejudiced individuals.

FAO (Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations) lists several benefits of integrated fish-duck farming. These include:

  1. Ducks fertilise the pond by their droppings when given free range over the pond surface. Ducks have been termed as manuring machines for their efficient and labour-saving method of pond manuring, resulting in complete savings on pond fertiliser and supplementary fish feed which accounts for 60 percent of the total cost in conventional fish culture.
  2. Ducks keep water plants in check.
  3. Ducks loosen the pond bottom with their dabbling and help in the release of nutrients from the soil, which increase pond productivity.
  4. Ducks aerate the water while swimming; thus, they have been called “biological aerators”.

According to FAO, ducks aerate the water, means they help to mix of air in water, and as air contains oxygen, ducks do help in increasing the amount of oxygen dissolved in water.

Department of fisheries of Indira Gandhi Agricultural University, Raipur, Chhattisgarh, had conducted a study on integrated duck-fish farming. The study involved two ponds – one with ducks (treated pond) and the other without (control pond). Fingerlings of Indian major carps (Catla, Rohu and Mrigala) were introduced into both the ponds. The study showed that Dissolved Oxygen was higher in the treated pond compared to the control pond. The pH level of the treated pond was higher, which was in a favourable range for fishes.

Duck droppings are organic matter, they provide nutrition to plankton in the water, enhancing their growth, which is a high protein natural feed for fishes. In the treated pond, both the quantity and variety of plankton was higher. In the end, fish productivity was found to be much higher in the treated pond at 2884 kg/ha/year, compared to 1510 kg/ha/year in the control pond. Also, the ducks gave additional income in forms of egg and meat, which added to the revenue of the pond. After the study, the incomes were ₹45,285 and ₹1,79,520, and profits were ₹26,485 and ₹1,40,520 for the control and treated pond respectively, showing that integrated duck-fish farming provides much higher income for the farmer.

Recently, PM Modi had praised a tea seller who had innovated a method to make tea from sewage gas. The usual cabal of liberals had gone berserk ridiculing and dismissing the idea till news reports emerged with video evidence and it was established that what the tea seller was doing, is an actual small-scale innovation. It is interesting that while the regular cabal on social media is only too eager to accept theories like ‘aloo ki factory’ and ‘shikanji coke’, they mock factual statements aimed at encouraging entrepreneurship and self-employment for rural Indians.

Metro Man E Sreedharan says there is no pride in receiving aid from other countries

0

Amidst the controversy of whether Kerala should be allowed to accept foreign aid or not, ‘Metro Man’ E Sreedharan said that receiving monetary aid from other countries is not a matter of pride.

E Sreedharan is fondly known as the ‘Metro Man’ for his contribution to the development of metro infrastructure in the country. According to him, the reason for the severe floods in the state of Kerala is due to the fact of bad forecasting and further added that there was no need of making any controversy over Centre’s aid for Kerala.

E Sreedharan speaking to the media further said, “Rs 700 crore is not a big deal as far as the central government is concerned, they can provide financial assistance of Rs 7,000 or 70,000 crores if they find it necessary. Receiving 700 crores from a foreign country is not a matter of pride for our nation”.

The former chief of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) opined that the country’s weather forecast machinery is not accurate and people do not believe in the country’s forecast system. He added that “Had our weather forecast been more accurate, we could have been well prepared for it”.

He went on to say that bad weather forecast augmented by the lapses committed by the dam safety authorities are the main reasons for Kerala disaster. “If the shutters of the dams were opened earlier, the disaster could have been averted, the dam shutters were opened in the last moment only,” he added.

Interestingly, a report of the NASA also suggests that the delay in releasing water from several full dams, instead of gradually releasing the same during drier times, coupled with abnormally heavy monsoon lead to the worst flooding in the state since 1924. The report also said that the opening of all the 80 dams in the region at once, including the Idukki dam, one of the largest arch dams in Asia aggravated the situation in Kerala.

E Sreedharan said that India is capable of dealing with the current situation and urged the state government to constitute an autonomous committee to re-build ‘new Kerala’.

NIA arrests deputy jail superintendent in Jammu and Kashmir for involvement in terrorist recruitment

0

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested a serving jail superintendent Firoz Ahmed Lone in connection to its investigation of terrorist recruitment operations run by Hizbul Mujahideen in Jammu and Kashmir. The network was allegedly active in recruiting and sending young men from the valley across the LoC for training in terror camps.

Firoze Ahmed Lone was reportedly the facilitator of meetings and communication between convicted terrorists and new recruits. According to reports, while Lone was the deputy superintendent of Srinagar jail, he helped the arrested Hizbul recruits Suhail Ahmed Bhat and Danish Ghulam Lone meet convicted Hizbul terrorist Ishak Palla who was lodged in Srinagar jail at that time. Firoz Ahmed Lone, being the jail authority, reportedly not only allowed the recruits to meet Palla but also arranged for them to remain in touch via Blackberry phones and WhatsApp groups. Palla is reportedly an over ground worker (OGW) for Hizbul Mujahideen group.

NIA had arrested the recruits Bhat and Danish Ghulam Lone back in October along with 4 OGWs of Hizbul named Ali Mughal, Liyaqat Ali, Ghulam Nabi Mughal and Harun Ahmed. While conducting an investigation, NIA reportedly learned that Bhat and Lone had met Ishak Palla inside Srinagar jail itself just a few days prior with the help from Dy superintendent Lone. The six were arrested from the Manigah village near the LoC trying to exfiltrate into PoK. Incriminating material including maps of sensitive areas near LoC, Hizbul posters and phones were recovered from them. They had revealed later that after meeting Palla in Srinagar jail, they were put in contact with PoK handlers and the PoK handlers had activated the OGWs in Kupwara to facilitate their exfiltration.

Firoz Ahmed Lone had been transferred and was currently posted in the Amphalla prison in Jammu.

It is notable here that the Srinagar jail long been a hotbed for terrorist activities and the involvement of the staff and other officials is suspected. In March 2018, the NIA had raided Srinagar jail and had recovered jihadi material, mobile phones and many Hizbul Mujahideen posters. The raid too was part of the investigation the NIA launched after Lone and Bhat were arrested with the OGWs in Kupwara in October. It was suspected that an active network of recruitment, radicalisation and facilitation of exfiltration to PoK was being run from inside the Srinagar jail.

‘Keep National Security is above politics’, Kiren Rijiju hits out at Rahul Gandhi

0

We had earlier reported how raids were carried out by Pune police in a minimum of eight different locations in five states including Mumbai, Ranchi, Faridabad, and Delhi in connection with the alleged Maoist plot to assassinate Prime Minister Modi and the Bhima Koregaon violence.

Five ‘activists’ were apprehended by police for having connections with the Bhima-Koregaon violence. These activists all allegedly had a connection to the Bhima-Koregaon violence. As we reported earlier all of these five activists to have strong connections with the Maoist movement. Among the arrested, some of the notable names are Gautam Navlakha, editor at Economical and Political weekly, Sudha Bharadwaj, a trade unionist, and Anand Teltumbde, a management professional and political analyst.

Rahul Gandhi took to Twitter on Tuesday to register his comments about the detention of these five activists, taking a dig at the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), the president of the Indian National Congress tweeted :

“There is only place for one NGO in India and it’s called the RSS. Shut down all other NGOs. Jail all activists and shoot those that complain. Welcome to the new India. #BhimaKoregaon,”

Today, the Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju also took to Twitter to condemn Rahul and remind him that Dr. Manmohan Singh had declared that Maoism to be the No. 1 threat to India’s national security and asked him to not compromise on national security for political reasons.

The minister accused him of openly supporting ‘front organisations and sympathisers of the Maoists. The police have booked all the accused under Sections 153 A, 505(1) B,117,120 B,13,16,18,20,38,39,40 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

Apart from Gandhi, the CPIM general secretary Sitaram Yechury also cried foul and described the arrests as a “blatant attack on democratic rights in the country,” and added that the situation in the country is worse than 1975 emergency.

The Bhima Koregaon violence erupted while observing the 200th anniversary of the Bhima Koregaon Battle in January this year. 10 policemen were injured and a young man lost his life in the violence that ensued on that day.

Vivek Agnihotri explains what he meant by ‘making a list’ of people supporting Urban Naxals

0

There has been a debate going on various media platforms ever since various self-styled activists were detained or arrested by police on charges that included supporting Maoists, aiding violence during the Bhima Koregaon event, and planning assassination of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. A specific set of people have already prejudiced the case by declaring everyone innocent, even though some of those arrested were already convicted earlier by courts for similar offences.

These people having been using terms like Emergency and McCarthyism, and putting out usual stable supply of terms like ‘fascism’, ‘Nazism’ and ‘dictatorship’ to describe the situation; while others have pointed out the inherent irony of them being free to accuse the government and state of these transgressions without any curb on their freedom to indulge in this behaviour.

Things became a little heated on Twitter earlier today when author and filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri posted a message asking people to make a list of those who are defending the ‘Urban Naxals’ – the title of his popular book as well as a term to refer to those living in the cities and embedded in the mainstream society, but aiding movements that aim to weaken or break down the nation-state through violence. This is what he tweeted:

Immediately, Vivek was accused of trying to create a ‘hit list’, members of which will be penalized and persecuted for holding contrary beliefs. As Godwin’s Law predicts, the predictable lot also termed his call to make such a list similar to proscription lists prepared by Nazis. As a result, Vivek was bombarded with a barrage of accusatory and abusive messages in response and a hashtag #MeTooUrbanNaxal was trended by those opposed to him.

But what was Vivek really thinking when he suggested making such a list? What was he aiming for? What would be done with that list?

OpIndia.com reached out to Vivek, who first laughed off the extreme reactions to his tweet, but said that the reactions also show that he was right in claiming that there is a huge number of urban dwellers who are committed to the Maoist or Naxal cause; they get triggered by anything that upsets their agenda – whether arrests or tweets.

When asked specifically what was the list supposed to achieve, Vivek said that he didn’t aim to create any ‘actionable’ list, but just a dataset where people can see what is common between those who were supporting the ‘Urban Naxals’.

“Obviously it was not any hit list. I don’t have any power to hit anyone. In fact, I am the one who was hit, literally!” Vivek told OpIndia, “But if such a list is created, you can analyse and spot trends. How the members of that list are interconnected, either through politics or through financial means. What binds them together. Some could be active supporters, while some could be just fooled into this whole narrative.”

“I stand by my tweet,” he added, “This should be taken as an academic exercise.”

But would he not agree that without this context, his tweet could be taken otherwise and could be seen as an attempt to censor or even target some specific people? When asked about this, Vivek said that he wanted to demonstrate this aspect as well.

“I agree with you that such lists could appear menacing,” he said, “But I just gave an idea of creating a list, while these people who are now attacking me have been creating such lists forever. Every other day I am on some list spread on social media where they call me names and brand me fascist, bigot, and what not.”

“Just look at that book on trolls written by a lady who herself is a troll,” Vivek further said, “That book has a list targeting private citizens, and politicians like Derek O’Brien have used that list to defame ordinary citizens in the parliament. That’s what you call a hit list.”

“By outraging against my tweet and my suggested list, they expose their own mindset and modus operandi,” he argued, “These are the people who create lists to target people and entities, so they think that when someone else talks about creating a list, they will also indulge in a similar end game. But my game here is only about narrative and academic.”

Romanticizing death, blood and deception – A tale of the Left and Naxalbari

0

History has always been written by the victors, but the times have changed and so have the idea of history and what it means to be victorious. In today’s socio-economical paradigm, the importance of reincarnating history as a tool to propagate an altered version of the same has become synonymous with the academic and the media elite.

We as a society put heavy emphasis on education and it has been one of the cornerstones of our civilization. That is precisely why we tend to nod whenever we read or hear a person with decorative academic background and never once do we feel the need to verify or counter-check the claims made by ‘the educated man’.

This presumption on behalf of the general populous that the ‘educated man’ being above scrutiny and is always rational gives way to snobbish attempts by the elite to manufacture narratives and engineer consent. Nowhere is this more prevalent than in media and academia – Institutions which are responsible for rationalizing young minds and make them informed individuals.

This phenomenon gets amplified manyfold when it comes to movements of the Left which have been radical and claimed thousands of lives in the past. ‘The educated man’ more often than not will try to depict such murderous movements in a better light and do so in a subtle but substantive way.

The 1917 ‘revolution’ which, for whatever reason, we in Indian celebrate as this great victory for the proletariat and the workers of the world, was actually a minuscule and contained attempt by a few hundred of Bolsheviks who had next to nothing presence in the vast rural lands of the Zar ruled Russia.

After taking hold of government offices in the town of ‘Petrograd’, the Bolsheviks with their allies ‘the left socialist revolutionaries’, who were an overwhelming majority in the ‘soviet’, promised free and fair elections and abolished private ownership of the land and proclaimed “rarely has an insurrection succeeded so well”.

Ironically or rather expectedly the Bolsheviks managed to get only 24% of the votes in the subsequent elections and lost miserably. In the most communist pattern possible, Lenin then ordered the ‘red guard’ (his personal army) to shut down the elected assembly. Following the shutdown, he installed himself as the Dictator and forced Russia into a civil war between red and white communist. What ensued can best be described by quoting the lines of a columnist for the Express Tribune:

“Everything material was in short supply in the brave new world of Communism. Except for blood, which was the motif of the Revolution. In July 1918 the royal family, including the five children, were shot, bludgeoned and bayoneted to death in the basement of a building in Yekaterinburg. They swapped the Romanovs for the Red Tsars of Communism. All 1917 brought the world was oppression, blood, and tragedy.”

Now, most of us are not aware of this aspect of the revolution, is because the ‘educated man’ chose to showcase a utopian rendition of the reality.

American ‘journalist’ John Reed’s eyewitness account of the revolution, “10 days that shook the world”, depicts a gleeful and emotional projection of the revolution and the same has been done by hundreds after him.

They do not talk about how the sailors of the Kronstadt naval base, who were initially staunch supporters of the revolution, overnight became ‘nationalist paramilitary’ and ‘black hundreds’. They do not talk about how the Red guards killed and imprisoned thousands of these sailors. This partial amnesia is not coincidental or rare – the same pattern can be seen around the world for every left induced massacre.

Case in point would be the terrible tale of the Naxalbari movement, which has been morbidly romanticized by generations of people through poems, books, and articles. If one disassociates the romanticizing aspect of the ‘revolution’ which we as younger generation look for be it in a woman, war or revolution, it was an appalling secessionist movement which claimed thousands of young lives.

From the initial days, the connection and influence of China were apparent. The main ideologues Charu Mazumder and Kanu Sanyal publicly expressed their ideological leaning towards the Chinese Communist Party and their Chairman Mao Zedong.

In April 1967, Charu Mazumder entrusted his Nepali comrade Krishnabhakta Sharma from Kalimpong with the task of carrying eight documents which Mazumder believed to be ‘guiding principles of the planned revolution’, to China. After 52 days of travelling, Sharma reached the offices of CPC.  He came back with a copy of ‘the red book’ signed by Mao.

When the uprising broke out, CPC mouthpiece ‘People’s Daily’ published in its July 5th 1967 edition the infamous article titled “Spring Thunder over India” openly lending their support to the band of ‘revolutionaries’ that Mazumder has formed. The article pointed out the inner division of the then undivided communist party and much like the old tradition of communists, here also the fight would eventually devolve between Chinese and Indian communists and impressionable young minds would be sacrificed at the sacrosanct altar of communism.

The article stated:

“A peal of spring thunder has crashed over the land of India. Revolutionary peasants in the Darjeeling area have risen in rebellion. Under the leadership of a revolutionary group of the Indian Communist Party, a red area of rural revolutionary armed struggle has been established in India. This is a development of tremendous significance for the Indian people’s revolutionary struggle.”

This section of the article points out the earlier mentioned inner rift between the different sects within the undivided communist party of India-

“The Indian reactionaries are panic-stricken by the development of the rural armed struggle in Darjeeling. They have sensed imminent disaster and they wail in alarm that the peasants’ revolt in Darjeeling will “become a national disaster.” Imperialism and the Indian reactionaries are trying in a thousand and one ways to suppress this armed struggle of the Darjeeling peasants and nip it in the bud. The Dange renegade clique and revisionist chieftains of the Indian Communist Party are vigorously slandering and attacking the revolutionaries in the Indian Communist Party and the revolutionary peasants in Darjeeling for their great exploits. The so-called “non-Congress” government in West Bengal openly sides with the reactionary Indian Government in its bloody suppression of the revolutionary peasants in Darjeeling. This gives added proof that these renegades and revisionists are running dogs of U.S. imperialism and Soviet revisionism and lackeys of the big Indian landlords and bourgeoisie. What they call the “Non-Congress government” is only a tool of the landlords and bourgeoisie.”

After the Naxalites formed a party and named it CPI (Marxist-Leninist) on April 1969 the activities of this organization became much more coordinated and they started to target the educated youth of Kolkata (then Calcutta). They started publishing a monthly propaganda publication called ‘LIBERATION’ which carried articles written by Mazumder himself.

As a result of the inciting nature of this publication, it was forfeited by the Calcutta Police by a notification in the Calcutta Police Gazette of September 18th, 1969. The streets of Kolkata and the walls of the city were covered with graffiti proclaiming Mao Zedong as the people’s chairman, A phrase coined by Charu himself in one of his articles.

In response, in their first congress CPI (M-L) in May 1970 the party called upon its followers to launch an attack on the police and seize their arms to build up an arsenal. By the end of October 1970, at least twenty five policemen were killed, and three hundred and fifty injured in these urban actions by the Naxalites.

The targeting of the Policemen went to such alarming level that Calcutta Police Gazette on 22nd October 1970 The then police Commissioner R.K.Gupta issued an order.

The order read:

“Going to cinemas, theatres or in such functions where officers and men are to stay for a considerable period of time, should be avoided. In this regard even if the family members are insistent, they should be dissuaded from such simple desires of theirs….”

The entire city of Calcutta was transformed into a battle-zone. Curfews, violence and picket points went up throughout the city. Eventually, Charu was captured by the Calcutta Police on 16th July 1972. He died of a heart attack on 28th July 1972.

Charu famously stated:

“He is not a true Communist who has not dipped his hands in the blood of the class enemy.”

The dream of armed revolution and toppling the state did not actualize and it can be argued that the leaders did realize that from the very beginning that the Chinese used them as their proxies to further their own narrative in the Indian sub-continent.

The real tragedy, however, is the loss of young lives. Thousands of students from eminent universities in Calcutta joined their ranks, brain-washed by the pamphlets and romanticization of revolution.

A prime example for which can be found in the statement of historian Dilip Simeon, Simeon was a student in St. Stephens College, New Delhi when he dropped out to join Mazumder. He states:

“(1968) was the year of the Prague Spring, the Tet offensive by the National Liberation Front in Vietnam, the May uprising by students and workers in France, the assassination of Martin Luther King, the Cultural Revolution in China, the Black Power salute by US athletes at the Mexico Olympics.”

Till this day, this idea is being kept alive by people who still harbour anti-state feelings and the ‘educated man’ is always more than happy to lend support in forms of literature that makes treason a matter of pride, and death, a yearning. What we see today is a repeat of the very propaganda that painted Calcutta red. If we aren’t careful, 1969 is not far from being repeated. After all, those who don’t learn from history are doomed to repeat it.

The provocation and agitation against the 3 CMs’ talk in JNU exposes the Left’s fascist mentality

0

The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the students’ wing of the nationalist organisation Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) had invited chief ministers of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur for a public talk on 28th August. However, the three chief ministers of the BJP ruled states faced protests and sloganeering allegedly by Leftist students.

Former JNU student and columnist Abhinav Prakash shared an image that the chief minister of Assam, Sarbananda Sonowal was the main target of the protestors and ABVP cadre at JNU had to form a human chain around him and escort him inside the venue amidst the threat of violence by the protestors.

In a series of tweets, Prakash tweeted how the Leftist goons tried to put forward women protestors to provoke and then physically assault students, just like how it happened during Ramjas violence by leftists in February 2017.

The students were protesting with placards that read ‘Rollback citizenship amendment bill’ and accused the ABVP of ‘flaunting proximity to power’ by inviting Sarbananda Sonowal, Pema Khandu and N Biren Singh, the chief ministers of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur respectively.

Their visit was part of the campaign for the JNU students’ elections which will be held on 14th September. The ABVP was accused of ‘blatant display of power’ for inviting the chief ministers while the NSUI, Congress’ student wing, had invited P. Chidambaram for a talk on ‘Myth of development under the Modi regime’ on Tuesday and the SFI had invited CPM’s Sitaram Yechury for a talk last week.

The three chief ministers, despite the protests, continued with their talk on national integration and development of the northeast in recent years.

The fact that Congress’ student wing inviting P Chidambaram wasn’t branded as “flaunting proximity to power” and SFI inviting Sitaram Yechury wasn’t branded the same either, shows that the Left doesn’t have a problem with the Chief Minister’s being invited, but a ploy to ensure that an opposing ideology doesn’t find a voice.

It is a proven fact that the ‘government’ and the ‘establishment’ are two separate entities. While BJP has formed the government, one can’t assume that people like Chidambaram or Yechury wield no power. Hence, for the Left to accept that as ‘intellectual discourse’ and to oppose a talk by duly elected chief ministers who might have an ideology that doesn’t sit well with them, shows that the trampling of free speech is an intrinsic part of the Left’s ideology.

The ‘Urban Maoists’ raided, who they are, and what connects them all

0

A massive crackdown has been underway on supposed Naxal sympathizers in connection with the violence at Bhima Koregaon last year and an assassination plot to murder Prime Minister Modi. The residences of prominent ‘Civil Rights Activists’ have been raided and they have either been detained or arrested. Here, we look at the backgrounds of these activists.

Gautam Navlakha

Navlakha is supposedly a civil liberties, democratic and human rights activist and a journalist. He has worked as the consultant editor for Economic and Political Weekly and has been associated with People’s Union for Democratic Rights (PUDR) for a long time as an activist.

It is quite evident from his writing that he quite the Naxal sympathizer. In 2011, he was refused entry at the Srinagar airport as the then government of Jammu & Kashmir believed that his presence could disturb peace in the valley. PUDR, the organization Navlakha has been associated with, also condemned the ban on PFI in Jharkhand despite numerous members of PFI being involved in violent activities and allegations that the organization is brainwashing Hindu women and felicitating their conversion.

PUDR also insinuated that the massive operations against Maoists in Gadrichholi last year, which is touted to be the most successful anti-Maoist operations in recent years, was in fact organized state-sponsored slaughter.

Varavara Rao

Rao is a communist, activist, poet, journalist, literary critic, public speaker and a Maoist ideologue who has been arrested several times in the past. He was jailed in 1980 for two years for waging a war and conspiring against the state. Varavara Rao shouted “long live revolution” as he was detained. He was later acquitted.

As per an interview with Countercurrents.org, he visited Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai in 2014 for a talk titled “Raging war against India: Deconstructing the notion of India”. In the interview, he talks freely about Maoism and what he envisions the future to be for Maoism.

Sudha Bharadwaj

Sudha Bharadwaj is an Indian trade Unionist, civil rights activist against land acquisition who has been living in Chhattisgarh for a long while. She is also the General Secretary of the Chhattisgarh unit of People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL), a fraternal organization of PUDR which has been mentioned earlier.

On its website, PUCL states that it condemns the hanging of terrorist Afzal Guru but the link appears to be broken. Republic TV had reported that they had managed to access a letter from Sudha Bharadwaj to one Comrade Prakash which allegedly showed a link between ‘Urban Naxals’ and Kashmiri separatists. Republic TV’s report was condemned by various ’eminent citizens’ including Prashant Bhushan.

Vernon Gonzalves

Vernon is a member of Communist Party of India (Maoist) and was convicted in 2007 by a Nagpur sessions court under the Arms Act, Explosives Act and Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).

Gonsalves was arrested with Sridhar Srinivasan in Mumbai by the Anti-Terrorism Squad. As per the prosecution in the case, nine detonators, 20 gelatin sticks, a walkie-talkie set, a computer, Naxal literature were seized from the duo in a raid in a chawl in Govandi, Mumbai.

As per security agencies, he is a former central-committee member and former secretary of Maharashtra State Rajya Committee of the Naxalites and he was charged in 20 cases. He was acquitted in 17 of them due to lack of evidence.

Arun Ferreira

Arun Ferreira is no stranger to prison as well. He had spent 4 and a half years in Nagpur prison before being granted bail by the District and Sessions court of Gadchiroli in Maharashtra and was eventually acquitted of all charges in 2014.

He was arrested under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) on charges of sedition. He became a poster boy for the media which portrayed him as a victim of the villainous state.

Father Stan Swamy

Stan Swamy is the founder member of Vistapan Virodhi Janvikash Andolan (VVJA). He is a Jesuit priest who has been facing some trouble with the law for a while. Earlier this year, an FIR was filed against him for allegedly inciting tension over the Pathalgadi movement.

A senior policeman from Pune is reported to have said Swamy was “suspected to have links with Elgar Parishad that is leading the violent Dalit movement in Maharashtra”. Stan Swamy is also associated with the PUCL.

Anand Teltumbde

Teltumbde is a management professional, writer, civil rights activist, and political analyst. He is a regular contributor to various media outlets. He also teaches management at the Goa Institute of Management. Teltumbde has denied all the allegations labelled against him. “None of the people arrested last time and today had the remotest connection with Bhima-Koregaon. As for me, I had publicly written critically about observing the Bhima-Koregaon anniversary, incurring the wrath of Dalits,” Teltumbde told Mint.

The raids by the Pune Police today on the civil rights ‘activists’ reveal a lot about the ‘civil society’ that the intellectual elite keeps harping on about. Some of these have been hailed as anti-establishment heroes following their acquittal or their release from prison after serving out their sentence upon conviction. Ferreira, especially, became some sort of an icon following his acquittal and he has been much eulogized in the mainstream media.

In 2014, Ferreira was at the Press Club with Varavara Roy for the release of his book, “Colours of the Cage: A Prison Memoir”. And in an inexplicable case of irony, Ferreira and Gonsalves who had written an article for DailyO titled ‘Why the letter about a Rajiv Gandhi type assassination is fake’ were themselves arrested yesterday in connection with the case by the Police.

There appears to be something terribly amiss with the academia and our universities. As has been mentioned before, TISS was the site for a talk titled “Raging war against India: Deconstructing the notion of India” and Varavara Rao, an unabashed Maoist, was there at the University for the event.

It is also surprising that Binayak Sen, a man convicted for sedition and helping Naxalites, was invited at TISS to deliver a keynote address at an event. A former student of TISS admitted on condition of anonymity that events such as these were par for the course for the institute.

Ferreira, too, was all set to deliver a talk at TISS as well but the authorities cancelled the event at the last moment stating that the venue had not been booked by the student organization beforehand. He held that intelligence agencies were responsible for his event being cancelled while the Director of TISS asserted that he was not “amenable to reason”.

Vernon Gonsalves, who has been convicted previously, was at JNU too speaking on how to confront fascism. And everyone raided today, with the exception of Varavara Rao, has contributed to Economic and Political Weekly (EPW) at some point or the other or contribute regularly. The EPW is a journal with a leftist disposition published by the Sameeksha Trust that has alleged historian Romila Thapar as a member of its Board of Trustees. Controversial editor Paranjoy Guha Thakurta was the editor of EPW before he resigned from the post in 2017.

Speaking of academia, everyone is, of course, aware of the noxious propaganda that goes on at JNU in the name of education and freedom of expression. Yet, in the Swarajya report, ‘The Secret History of JNU’, people will discover information they were hitherto unaware of.

It is quite obvious that the intellectual elite which is so enamoured by the ideas of Marx will act as a Trade Union itself. They believe that should they organize themselves under one banner, then they will be able to bend the government to their will. Like true members of a Trade Union, members of the intellectual elite jumped into action as soon as the Police raids began.

Quick to criticize the government was Ramchandra Guha, a contributor to the EPW himself like so many of those who were raided today. EPW also has the honour of receiving contributions from DU Professor Nandini Sundar, wife of The Wire Editor S Varadarajan, who was booked in the murder case of a tribal man along with Maoists. PUCL said in a statement, “Such systematic and pre-meditated crackdown on human rights activists is unprecedented and unheard of in a democracy.” The statement by PUCL is not surprising considering its member Sudha Bharadwaj suffered the crack of the whip in the raids. PUCL can also boast of having Binayak Sen as one of its former Vice-Presidents. Prashant Bhushan who has branded the raids fascist has been associated with the PUCL in the past as well.

Teesta Setalvad also has spoken out condemning the raids which is not surprising at all considering her history of legal trouble. Amnesty International and Oxfam India issued a joint statement on the matter as well and deemed the raids disturbing. Some might inform Oxfam that its cover-up of sexual misconduct by its senior aid workers in Haiti was disturbing and others would inform Amnesty that the anti-Brahmin rants by an activist associated with it is disturbing and that the raids are merely a part of an ongoing investigation. However, their opinions wouldn’t count as they are individual voices only while they are certified Trade Unions of Civil Society.

An attempt is being made to build a narrative that the raids on the activists for their alleged link to Maoists are an ‘undeclared emergency’. It is precisely how trade unions work. They threaten that if their demands are not met, then no work shall be done. Intellectuals cannot make such threats, therefore, they use their power to shape narratives to bend the government to their will.
