Mewat: Hotbed of organised crime, cattle smuggling, illegal Rohingyas and mob violence against Police

0

March 28: 13 policemen were injured after villagers numbering over 100 of Rahri reportedly attacked them with stones when they reached the village to arrest wanted ATM robber Rafiq, alias Bachhi.

May 9: 70 villagers of Ghata Shamsabad in Mewat attacked the Police when they went to arrest notorious ATM thief Sahid and managed to free the criminal.

August 7: Villagers in Mewat attack Police during an operation organized to nab wanted criminal Shabbir in a bid to free the criminal, a youth ends up dead. The cause of death is still unclear.

All these three cases are from 2018 and another common factor that appears obvious is that the villages are overwhelmingly Muslims, a community which dominates the Mewat area which cuts across Haryana and Rajasthan. There was much talk of mob violence going around on social media. It is rather intriguing that the media conveniently forgot to highlight the manner in which it has become all too common in Mewat for people to attack the Police to free criminals.

Another sad reality of Mewat is the fact that it’s a haven for cattle smugglers. This report from September 2016 mentions that Police were too scared of taking action against the criminals for fear of retaliation from smugglers and their ‘local supporters’. The same report also mentions how the Police discovered 300 hides of cows stashed in a mini-truck that was travelling from Gurgaon to Mewat. Another report from 2016, this one from August, mentions that until July 2016, Alwar Police had detected 72 cases of cattle smuggling in Alwar and 40 in Bharatpur. The corresponding numbers for 2015 were 100 and 30 respectively. This report from December, 2017 highlights how lucrative the cattle smuggling business is. “The people who transport at least 5 to 6 cows from Alwar and Bharatpur to Nooh Mewat of Haryana can earn Rs 1 lakh to Rs 2.5 lakh per trip if they managed to deliver the lot of cows safely,” the report quotes a senior officer as saying. The Police claimed at that point of time that at least 500 people were in the business of cattle smuggling in the region.

There is news of Police rescuing cows from smugglers in Mewat on a regular basis. This July 18 report mentions how the Police managed to rescue 27 cows and arrest two thieves despite the goons opening fire at them. In Mewat, it is also very common for cattle smugglers to shoot at Police offers. In May this year, the Police did manage to arrest three involved in cattle smuggling including one who is touted to be a king-pin of a cow smuggling gang. Another report from 2017 mentions how the Police managed to free over 150 cows after an encounter with cow smugglers in Alwar and seized illegal arms and ammunition from them as well. And there are reports after reports highlighting the menace of cow smuggling in the region.

Mewat also has Rohingya settlements, people who the Government of India plans to deport. Earlier in May, a major fire turned a significant section of the settlement to ashes. The reason cited by the officials was a short circuit. However, the Rohingyas claim it was an act of arson. Whatever the reason may be, 150 of them were rendered homeless. The Central Government has asserted that illegal Rohingyas in Mewat and some other regions have links with terror organizations. According to the Government, 1300 Rohingyas were living in 6 camps of Mewat in December, 2017.

Thus, it should not come as a surprise to anyone that Mewat is very susceptible to communal tensions. Rakbar Khan, Pehlu Khan and Umar Khan, three instances of murder by cow vigilantes that gained a lot of publicity in national mainstream media were all from Mewat. Incidentally, the Police had filed two cases in connection with Pehlu Khan’s murder. One, against the accused for the murder of Pehlu Khan. And the second, against Pehlu Khan and his associates for smuggling in cattle. Therefore, it is quite possible that the media created hero Pehlu Khan may not have been as innocent as he was made out to be.

Thus, there are multiple problems ailing Mewat. And the conspiracy of silence surrounding the real reasons for the communal tinderbox the entire region has become is only edging the region towards further chaos. The complete degeneration of law and order in the region and the complete inability of the Police to enforce the will of the state means that vigilantes will naturally fill in the space the state has abandoned. And I believe it will be very harsh to blame the Police for their failure to improve the law and order situation in the area. There appears to be an entire organized criminal infrastructure in place with the active participation of the locals who risk their lives to rescue the criminals from the clutches of Police. And despite all the obstacles that are thrown their way, the Policemen in the region have consistently achieved success against the organized crime mafia in the region. The situation in Mewat is an urgent reminder that there’s a desperate need for the modernization of the Indian Police Force.

There is a need to completely back the Police action in the region and enforce a severe crackdown against organized crime and all those who attack the Police in a bid to rescue criminals. In the recent incident where a youth has turned up dead after a mob attacked the Police to rescue a criminal, villagers are now demanding compensation for the deceased family and blaming the Police for the youth’s unfortunate death although the Police themselves are not sure about who or how he ended up dead and are not ruling out the possibility that the youth was perhaps shot by the criminal or his aides. There are reports that 30 Policemen are to be named in the FIR in the matter of the youth’s death. If we back the Army in Kashmir against stone-pelters, then Indian authorities should definitely back the Police in a situation where they were besieged by a mob which attacked them with the sole purpose of rescuing a criminal.

Triple Talaq Bill: Congress MP Hussain Dalwai invokes Lord Ram, says even Shree Ram ‘once left Sitaji’

0

Amidst the ongoing Triple Talaq Bill debate where the Centre seeks to bring in amendments in the draft triple talaq bill, which is supposed to be tabled today in the Rajya Sabha, Congress MP Hussain Dalwai today invoked Lord Ram and said that women have always been treated unfairly in all communities and how Lord Ram had also left Sita after doubting her.

Likening the Agneepariksha, where Sita had to prove her chastity after returning from Lanka, followed by her exile to triple talaq, Dalwai said that not just Hindus but even Hindus, Christians, Sikhs and every male-dominated society treats women unfairly. Earlier, too, Dalwai had made a controversial statement. In July, he had come out in support of Asaduddin Owaisi and questioned Prime Minister Modi on the number of Muslims in the armed forces.

However, later Dalwai retracted his statement and apologised for hurting religious sentiments. As reported by Times Now, he said that he respects Lord Ram and Sita and he did not intend to hurt anyone’s feelings by his statement. This is not the first time a Congress leader has dragged Hindu faith to justify barbaric practices of the minority community. Earlier, senior Congress leader cum lawyer Kapil Sibal, who is famous for the zero loss theory in the 2G scam, had argued that ‘if Hindus’ faith about Rama’s birth at Ayodhya can’t be questioned, then triple talaq, a matter of faith for Muslims shouldn’t be.‘ Except, triple talaq is not a matter of faith, but a matter of practice.

Arrested JMB terrorist reveals the terror group’s plans of terror attacks in Bengal and Assam

0

The arrested terrorist of the Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), Mohammad Jahid-ul Islam alias Bomber Miyan alias Kausar has revealed their group’s plans of launching jihad in Indian states like West Bengal and Assam. According to a report in India Today, the terrorist has admitted during interrogation that they were planning to use exploit the Rohingya issue to further their cause of launching Jihad against India.

He has reportedly revealed that they had planned the blasts at the Mahabodhi Temple in Bodhgaya to be the ‘announcement’ of their arrival and a display of their capabilities. As the Dalai Lama was visiting at the time and a great number of Buddhist pilgrims were to visit the temple, the blasts were planned to have the maximum impact. On January 19, 3 powerful IEDs were found in the temple after one of the devices malfunctioned and caught fire. Kausar is reportedly an explosives expert.

Two other arrested terrorists in the case had revealed that the IED was placed near cooking cylinders to cause maximum damage, as the blast would have exploded the LPG cylinders too. Another IED was reportedly planted near the gate to kill escaping people. The media coverage and severity of attack was the intended ‘announcement’ the JMB planned for. Two West Bengal residents, Abdul Karim and Mustafizur Rehman, who were arrested in Kerala on August 5 were believed to have been recruited by Kausar. Kausar’s another associate Adil alias Asadullah was also arrested by NIA  in Bangalore.

Kausar Ali alias Mohammad Jahid-Ul Islam is reportedly JMB’s deputy chief who had escaped from the Bangladeshi authorities in 2014 during the prison transport and had infiltrated into India. He had immediately started recruiting people. He had married a local girl in Birbhum and even taught in a Madarsa in Beldanga. However, his immediate plans in 2014 were foiled after an accidental blast in Khagragarh, Burdwan killed two operatives and alerted the Indian authorities of a large existing JMB network already operational in India. The Khagragarh unit was reportedly making explosives to be smuggled into Bangladesh. Kausar then reportedly went underground and is believed to have travelled across south India as a workman or plumber. He is believed to have recruited many people over the years and has even been involved in the radicalisation of Muslim youth in several areas. He was arrested from Ramnagara near Bangalore.

The India Today report states that the NIA believes the JMB has many operational modules in India and many top JMB operatives have met Kausar on several occasions. On 8th August another JMB operative was arrested from Pakur, Jharkhand. Earlier in July, two JMB operatives were arrested in Delhi while they were trying to activate a module consisting of Rohingya Muslims.

Recently another JMB operative named Mohammad Musiruddin alias Musa was arrested by the West Bengal CID on suspected links to the Khagragarh blast case. NIA was also probing on his suspected terror links and the US FBI has also interrogated Musa over his ISIS links. Musa had admittedly in contact with several top ISIS leaders.

The JMB has been a dreaded terror outfit in Bangladesh for years. Over the years, it is believed to have shifted its allegiance from Al-Qaeda to the ISIS and both the terror organisations are suspected of using the Rohingya refugee crisis as a tool for expanding their extremist agenda. It is notable here that when Kausar alias Bomber Miyan was being interrogated in Bangladesh after his arrest, he had revealed that JMB has close ties with the Rohingya terrorist group Rohingya Solidarity Organisation (RSO) and JMB operatives have received training in firearms from RSO in exchange for lessons on explosives. It was well-known that the JMB was targeting Buddhist pilgrimage sites as a ‘revenge’ for the Rohingya crisis. JMB has also been linked with the 2013 Bodh Gaya blasts. But the arrest of Kausar alias Bomber Miyan has exposed just how deep and how far the JMB has gained access inside Indian borders and how the Rohingya population can be recruited and used by these terror outfits for launching jihad in India.

Security agencies in India have long since warned the potential danger the Rohingya refugees possess to India and have alerted of their links to terror organisations. Rohingya refugee camps are suspected to be the breeding ground for radicalisation and terror activities. Now, with the revelation of JMB’s deep-rooted network in India and their plans for jihad on Indian soil, the need for strict action on Rohingya refugees is the ever more important. It also exposes the treat that the porous India Bangladesh border poses for our national security.

Raj Babbar holding a ‘blank’ placard during Rafale protests outside Parliament has Twitter users in splits

Congress MPs including former Congress leader and now AAP’s controversial Rajya Sabha MP Sushil Gupta got together to protest outside the Parliament over the Rafale deal issue.

However, the image of Congress leader Raj Babbar holding the placard where it appears as if he is holding a blank a placard, stood out. While it seems like he is reading what is written on the placard, it appears in the photograph as if he is holding a blank placard. Soon, twitterati had their creative hats up to not let go of the opportunity to mock Babbar.

Some were quite tongue-in-cheek.

And some talked of the soft Hindutva approach the Congress Party President seems to be following these days.

Meanwhile, following the uproad by the Opposition, the Rajya Sabha has been adjourned till 2:30 pm over Rafale deal issue.

Former IPS officer Bharti Ghosh makes a shocking revelation: says Mamata Banerjee transfers officers if BJP gains grounds

0

In an exclusive interview to India Today, former IPS officer Bharti Ghosh made a sensational claim against West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee alleging that Banerjee “transfers officers if BJP gains ground” and that Ghosh was shunted out due to the rise of BJP in Sabang by-elections held in 2017.

Bharti Ghosh, who was once considered a very close aide of Mamata Banerjee is the first IPS officer to resign from service in Mamata’s regime. She resigned in protest against the state government.

While talking to India Today she alleged that she has been falsely accused and hooked in an extortion and a forgery case as she had refused to capitulate and had conducted a free and fair election in 2017. As a result of which she was heckled, tormented and wrongly accused of misusing her administrative position. Her husband too was arrested in connection with the case.

Ghosh, lambasting at the state government and their unfair codes, demanded to know that after serving for 26 years and being revered with rewards and token of appreciation what suddenly led the government to characterize her as immoral and disloyal? She stated that the mere fact that she refused to bow down to the parties whims and act accordingly irked the bigwigs of the party.

The career graph of Ghosh, who was earlier the superintendent of police of West Midnapore district was completely dishevelled after the Sabang by-elections conducted in 2017, claimed the IPS officer. Soon after the by-election, in December 2017, in a major reshuffle in IPS cadre in West Bengal, Ghosh was transferred to the post of the commandant of the third battalion of the state armed police. Ghosh’s transfer came following allegations from a section of Trinamool Congress leadership that she had worked for the BJP in the Sabang by-election held last month.

Later, early this year, West Bengal CID raided the residences of Ghosh and police officers apparently close to her, for their alleged involvement in misconduct and extortion from civilians, and launched a nationwide hunt as she was reportedly declared missing by the CID.

In the latest accusation against the former IPS officer, it was reported that the West Bengal Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has submitted the charge sheet against former IPS officer Bharati Ghosh, accusing her of extortion, forgery and criminal conspiracy, and labelled her an absconder.

Not knowing what future holds for her, most ironically though, when in good terms, Ghosh had once described Mamata in a public meeting as the mother of ‘Jangalmahal’ (the former Maoist-dominated districts of West Midnapore, Bankura and Purulia) for ushering in peace in the area.

‘We will ally with crooks after winning elections against them’: Kejriwal misquoted by pro-AAP blog

0

Arvind Kejriwal is a legend of our times. His persona and the reflecting glory that his party AAP receives is so profound that they defy every law of logic and understanding of mortal realms. AAP is more ironical than irony itself, more satirical than the choicest satires and as its supremo is considered the master of U-turns, their brand of politics has become so confusing that even their staunchest supporters sometimes have no clue what is real and what is a satire.

As Poe’s law states, without a winking smiley or other blatant display of humour, it is sometimes impossible to distinguish between a genuine article and a satire. The entire aura of Kejriwal and AAP is such that even the pro-AAP blog ‘Janta Ka Reporter, missed out on differentiating a parody from the real news when it concerned AAP and its master.

As political calculations and number games were rife for the election of Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman, AAP leader Sanjay Singh had announced yesterday that AAP will abstain from voting as Congress President Rahul Gandhi did not deem it fit to give Arvind Kejriwal a phone call asking for his support. In their words, “Rahul Gandhi can hug the PM but cannot even call Arvind Kejriwal.”

Well, NDA candidate Harivansh Narayan Singh won by a margin of 20 votes and considering even Rahul Gandhi had made that much-anticipated call, the UPA candidate would then have lost by 17 votes. But AAP is AAP, so the sulking and criticising continued, even Sanjay Singh went ahead and declared, Congress is the biggest obstacle on the path of ‘opposition unity’.

Amidst all this melodrama, AAP centric blog Janta Ka Reporter dropped another bombshell. They declared that AAP will not be a part of any pre-poll alliance against BJP, ‘quoting’ Arvind Kejriwal. In their article, they claimed that Congress is miffed at AAP for not voting for them and Congress leaders are now attacking AAP, by citing Sharmistha Mukherjee, who is neither an MP nor an MLA.

That was not all, the real bombshell was embedded (quite literally) deeper in the article. The article declared that Arvind Kejriwal has stated that AAP will not be part of any anti-BJP alliance before 2019 elections. It claimed Kejriwal has declared that he will join the crooks only ‘after’ the elections.

janta ka reporter

The source for the claim is Times How (the satire Twitter handle), not Times Now. This was the embedded Tweet in the article,

They have now rectified the mistake and Tweeted an apology admitting the error. We do not blame Janta Ka Reporter. After all, Arvind Kejriwal is the reigning god of ironies, the deity of satires and the messiah of contradictions. He did make similar claims in the past. He had sworn never to take the support of Congress and done exactly that weeks later. He had claimed AAP is anti-corruption but had cheered for Lalu Prasad Yadav. Their promises and claims are a saga of countless wi-fi connections a million CCTVs.

It is the greatness of AAP that it contradicts the biggest contradictions. The lines of satire and news do not blur when Arvind Kejriwal is concerned because, like the fabled philosophical universe of matter and energy, reality and parody merge into each other in AAP’s dimension of existence. Like we said before, it is not for us mere mortals.

Contempt petition filed against Prashant Bhushan for his statements against the judiciary

0

A contempt petition has been filed against senior lawyer Prashant Bhushan and news channels Aaj Tak and Times Now for making reckless imputations against the Judiciary. The contempt petition has been filed by 5 lawyers who hail from Lucknow.

The petitioners have filed the contempt case after taking strong exception to the statements made by Prashant Bhushan after the pronouncement of 2 judgements by the Supreme Court – the Sahara-Birla Payoff case and the Judge Loya case. They have asserted that the comments made by Prashant Bhushan tarnish the image of the Judiciary in the eyes of the people.

The petition says:

“usual practice of Shri Prashant Bhushan to malign the Hon’ble Judges and the institution of the judiciary if he fails to get a favourable judgment from the court attributing reasons for passing the judgment/order against him.”

The petitioners have cited that after the dismissal of the Sahara-Birla Payoff case, Prashant Bhushan had declared it to be a “black day” in the history of the Supreme Court.

In the Sahara-Birla Payoff PIL that was filed by Prashant Bhushan and dismissed by the Supreme Court, observing that mere diary entries cannot be considered as evidence, Prashant Bhushan had cast aspersions on the Judiciary, as stated in the petition. Prashant Bhushan had also alleged that the Supreme Court “wilts under pressure”.

The petition also cites Prashant Bhushan saying :

“It was one of most unfortunate date for the Supreme Court and the Judiciary, where the credibility of the Court has been greatly undermined that too effectively by the CJI himself”.

The petitioners have also cited the dismissal of the case that sought a probe into the death of Judge Loya, filed by Congress supporter Tehseen Poonawalla. The petition asserts that immediately after the announcement of the verdict, Prashant Bhushan had said:

“With a view to scandalize the judges and the institution of judiciary addressed the press in the lawns of the Supreme Court which was broadcast by different news channels”.

The petition recalls a judgement from 1st December 2017 when the court had imposed a heavy cost on Prashant Bhushan. The petition cites the following extract of the judgement:

“…the present petition, in particular, the manner in which it has been perused without any remorse of questioning the decision rendered on the subject matter by this court including the plea taken in the earlier petition as noted in paragraph 29 of the said decision, is a gross abuse of the process of the court. Therefore, it has to be dismissed with exemplary costs in order to ensure that such an attempt is not repeated in future.”

Mentioning that the affidavit in support of the application for intervention (in Judge Loya death) was sworn by Mr.Prashant Bhushan personally, the petition quoted a part of the judgement while dismissing that case that said that the petition was a veiled attempt to launch a frontal attack on the independence of the judiciary and to dilute the credibility of the judicial institutions.

Referring to the press conference held after the Judge Loya petition dismissal, the petition said, that from his statements, it was clear that Prashant Bhushan said the following:

  1. “It is a black day in the Supreme Court history.”
  2. “the judgment has been passed at the instance of some person”.
  3. “the judgment has been passed to shield the culprits”
  4. “the judgment has been passed to suppress regarding the death of judge Loya”

The petition has included Aaj Tak and Times Now in the contempt petition since the statements of Prashant Bhushan was broadcast on these channels the entire day.

The petitioners have sought initiation of criminal contempt against Bhushan, Aaj Tak and Times Now under Article 129 of the Constitution of India read with Section 15 of the Contempt of Courts Act.

We had reported earlier how the court had made some interesting observations while hearing the Judge Loya case. The judicial whistleblowers in the case have a sketchy past and that had cast doubts on their credibility. Judge Loya’s family had also appealed to NGOs and lawyers to drop the case and said that they have no suspicion with regards to his death.

Congress MLA from Madhya Pradesh compares Shivraj Singh Chouhan to a prostitute

0

Sunderlal Tiwari, a Congress MLA from Rewa district of Madhya Pradesh while addressing the media compared chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan to a prostitute and said that, “The way a prostitute sells her soul, in the same way, the chief minister of the state Shivraj Singh Chouhan is selling his soul to get votes”. He went on to accuse the chief minister of his alleged involvement in Vyapam scam and said that if he is not brought to justice, it will be proved that law and order in the state is not for the poor people.

The Congress MLA further accused the BJP government of indulging in malpractices by manipulating the poor and unemployed to vote for their party. He said that the Chief Minister is running a free hand to influence the voters and this is the reason why the judges of the Supreme Court had to speak in the public about the injustice happening in the country.

The elections to 230-member Madhya Pradesh legislative is yet to be announced and both the BJP and Congress seems to be fighting hard to emerge victorious in the coming elections. The Chief Minister of the state Shivraj Singh Chouhan is fighting elections for his fourth successive term, while the  Congress party seems to be a divided house. The rift within the Congress has surfaced in the public, as it is yet to announce its Chief Minister candidate.

Jammu: Police suspect terror funding as they seize Rs 30 lakh from Rohingyas

0

Illegally settled Rohingyas have been reportedly detained by the Police in Channi Himmat area of Jammu near Sunjwan military camp area and seized Rs 30 lakh from them. Senior Superintendent of Police Jammu Vivek Gupta said that the two main culprits, who brought the money, are absconding but their three close aides have been detained after the seizure of the cash. He also confirmed that the raid was carried out as the police received a tip-off. “Our teams are continuously keeping vigil over all suspected movements and this recovery is the result of our day and night surveillance,” SSP Jammu Vivek Gupta said.

He further said that the matter is being investigated and what is the source of this huge cash is also being looked into, while a manhunt has been launched to apprehend the culprits. Police have reportedly concluded that the possibility of theft, narco smuggling, and link to various terrorist groups could not be ruled out.

Recently many Jammu-based political parties, NGOs, and social organizations have been raising voice over the deportation of Rohingyas and Bangladeshi nationals, who are illegally settled in parts of Jammu district.

Reports suggest how these illegal migrants have mysteriously managed to own properties including big and small commercial establishments. A Crime Investigation Department (CID) officer had also revealed that Rohingyas have managed to buy state land, and in one case, a Rohingya was found possessing a bungalow worth two crores.

These illegal immigrants, however, have been regularly reported of being involved in unlawful activities, ranging from drug peddling to human trafficking and allegedly have various terrorist links too.

Notably, a terror attack was carried out at Sunjwan military station in Narwal on February 10, after which fingers were raised at illegal settlement of Rohingyas around the camp. Almost during the same period in the month of February this year, human trafficking racket, being operated allegedly by a Rohingya Muslim in Jammu was exposed by Trikuta Nagar SHO Inspector Parvez Sajad. Besides this, numbers of Rohingyas have been booked in Jammu for their involvement in drug peddling.

The problem of illegal immigrants has been often described as ‘ticking time bomb’ by the intelligentsia. Many have been thriving and flourishing by fuelling narco smuggling, human trafficking, child abductions, sacrilegious acts, border crossing, etc.

Ae mere pyaare watan.. Ae mere bichde chaman..

In 1986, a much awaited and planned wedding of a friend was postponed because his grandfather couldn’t get an Indian visa in time. Where was his grandfather coming from we wondered? And wasn’t his grandfather the elderly gentleman who often came visiting from Dehradun? No, we were informed that was the grandfather’s brother but grandfather himself was coming from Pakistan. Which to be frank, took us by surprise.

In North India, especially among Hindu Punjabis and Sikhs, we’ve grown up with the stories of how our parents, grandparents and sometimes even their parents had to flee with what little they could gather and run with. How their homes, land, villages, towns held through generations had overnight morphed into what was to be now Pakistan.

Some with small bundles, others with gold coins stitched into their turbans or hidden in a baby’s clothing – fled, leaving the rest behind. In the chaos and the fires, people lost beloved members of the family, womenfolk to kidnappings, rape and sometimes killed by one’s own to escape shame and stigma. Several thousand were slaughtered on the trains and never managed to reach the safety of the arms waiting to hold them on the other side or, an unknown refugee camp teeming with the shattered and the displaced.

One of greatest speeches of the 20th century delivered by India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru was on the eve of India’s independence. Tryst with Destiny was poignant, brave, full of a hope to a people that had won their Independence after a largely non-violent struggle but followed by the horrific bloodbath of Partition that killed more than a million and displaced 15 million.

That landmark oratory transfixed people and those who heard it still find it difficult to explain and describe that surreal moment when freedom became a reality after nearly 1000 years of subjugation. Not only the yoke of British colonization but subjugation under one tyrannical invader after the next.

The mind couldn’t wrap itself around the idea, I’m told. But the business of getting on with life in a newly, free country was of utmost importance.

In the early days of Partition, there were often frequent references to those who were left behind. Some stayed by choice. Some didn’t have the means. Some to protect land and hearth. Some who didn’t quite understand the import of the happenings around them and held the belief that this madness was but temporary and like all riots of the past, things would return to normal and everybody would come back. Others because they chose not to abandon an elderly person who couldn’t have survived the dangerous and violent journey and in the bargain endangered the chances of the others. As was the case of Grandfather who was then a young, strong, recent widower in his 30s, having handed over his two baby boys to a brother. With the intention, of course, to cross over – later.

So, were the words of the new Prime Minister a balm to his unimaginable wounds? This man who opted to stay behind for his beloved mother in the ashes & dust of what was once a flourishing life. Did these words give him hope that India understood his compulsions and would wait for him?

“We think also of our brothers and sisters who have been cut off from us by political boundaries and who unhappily cannot share at present in the freedom that has come. They are of us and will remain of us whatever may happen, & we shall be sharers in their good (or) ill fortune alike”.

Around the same time, MA Jinnah did say – “You are free to go to your temples, you are free to go to your mosques or to any other place of worship in this State of Pakistan. You may belong to any religion caste or creed – that has nothing to do with the business of the State”

That sigh of relief, however, was shortlived, because the 2nd Prime Minister of Pakistan, Khawaja Nizamuddin stated- “I do not agree that religion is a private affair of the individual nor do I agree that in an Islamic state every citizen has identical rights, no matter what his caste faith or creed be”.

As expected, in 1956, Pakistan became the Islamic Republic. The Muslim, who decided to cross borders post-Independence, took it for granted that the Land of The Pure awaited him. Pakistan, after all, is the only country to have been created in the name of Islam for the Indian Muslim.

At this time the ‘hostage theory’ had been espoused. According to this theory, the Hindu minority in Pakistan was to be given a fair deal in order to ensure the protection of the Muslim minority in India.

Nonetheless, the two countries chose distinct and different paths. One ancient, imperfect, embracing & recovering from a recent amputation. The other new and petulant, eager to cast off old associations and sift in the sands of the Middle East for some connection that could tie them to a history more to their liking.

Our Minorities grew in numbers and rose to succeed in politics, the armed forces, the judiciary, business, the media, the film industry, sports, art, literature, music. Whereas theirs simply, slowly vaporized or were done to death.

This was the time, Grandfather attempted to return. His mother had long passed and he had taken a new wife and had two daughters with her. What was left unsaid, as if she was of the same faith? Regardless, India turned him and his family away.

Since India is not a signatory to the 1951 United Nations Refugee Convention it refuses to recognize the Pakistani Hindu Migrant as refugees & is not bound to offer them citizenship.

This has been said before and must be repeated again and again.

13 countries have Christianity as the state religion. 26 countries have Islam as the state religion, including Pakistan which was specially carved out for the Indian Muslim. 2 countries have Buddhism as their state religion. The State of Israel is the Promised Land for the Jewish people who have a Right to Return no matter where they come from. And there is not one country that has Hinduism as a state religion despite 988 million.

It is said nearly 5000 Hindus leave Pakistan for India every year.

Some rot in refugees’ camps, as they are doing now in Delhi.

Some enter surreptitiously and lie low in the deserts of Rajasthan & Saurashtra. Many leave Bangladesh to escape religious persecution.

It is time a distinction is made between one illegal immigrant and the other. Between one refugee and the next. The Hindu is persecuted, suffers the violence of an unimaginable kind, can be put to death because of his faith in our two neighbouring countries. A man and his family of this religious denomination cannot be heartlessly sent back to a burning ship from which he jumped off, risking his life, swimming to a shore expecting safety and succour. Only to be turned back by Secular India, forgetting her Eternal Tradition, her Eternal Way, beyond human history to which this Hindu is connected.

Grandfather did finally arrive for what was to be a brief visit. A frail man in a suit which had definitely seen better days, clutching his drink while family and old friends gathered around him. With the boisterous Sangeet in the background and the dholki keeping beat, young boys and girls were introduced to the broken branch of the family tree. Not quite here. Not quite there. Fallen between the cracks…
