Tamil Nadu : Child trafficking rumours circulated via WhatsApp leads to lynchings and violent rage

As per reports, fallacious messages being circulated on Whatsapp asking people to not trust outsiders as they are part of a child trafficking group went viral, leaving Tamil Nadu especially Vellore, Tiruvannamalai and Tiruvallur districts, in the last few weeks in a state of fright.

Behind these seemingly irrational fears are rumours that have been spread over Whatsapp that 200 child traffickers from north India had entered Tamil Nadu and were planning to lure away children from the State. These completely unfounded rumours have, unfortunately, claimed three lives in the last three weeks, while there have been many incidents in which mobs have attacked strangers.

In the first case, a mob had beaten a man to death and hung him from a bridge in Pulicat on Wednesday last week, on the suspicion that he was a child trafficker.

In a second case, a 63-year-old woman, Rukmani was lynched by a group of villagers in Tiruvannamalai district. The incident reportedly took place when the woman was travelling to the suburbs of Tiruvannamalai with her relatives to pay a visit to her family deity.

Another man named Sanjay, a migrant from North India, was tied to an electric pole and thrashed brutally. Upon investigation, police found out that he too was a victim of the paranoia.

According to locals, police, and journalists who have been receiving these messages, the deluge of false information began in early April. Amongst the several false messages received by these residents, an audio recording did the rounds, purportedly by a man from Vellore. In the audio, an unidentified man alleges that 400 people had come to Tamil Nadu to abduct children. This warning even came with a video that allegedly showed how easily children are being picked up from the streets. The video, according to multiple sources, is old and is being misused to create panic.

These fake messages have led to unprecedented attacks across districts on anyone the public deems suspicious. Across the state, awareness drives have been undertaken by the district police to counter the false propaganda.

Opindia.com had earlier reported how a fake audio clip claiming a Bengali worker beaten up surfacing on Whatsapp claimed migrant workers from northern and eastern parts of the country were facing death threats in Kerala. This led to nearly 400 migrant workers to flee from Kozhikode in Kerala.

In Kashmir last year, as many as 300 Whatsapp groups with around 250 members in each group were being used to mobilize stone-pelter mobs against security forces. In order to curb these miscreants internet facility had to be withdrawn.

Earlier too, we had reported how social media was instrumental in twisting a news report giving it a communal angle overlooking the main issue of a frenzied mob going on a killing spree based only on rumours in Jharkhand. We tried to highlight how rogue elements in the mainstream media, who have been regularly found guilty of spreading lies, to indulge in further fear mongering by giving it a communal spin.

In today’s day and age, where social media has gained so much importance and has become an integral part of our existence, it should be used prudently as people need to realize that the effect of social media can be far more dangerous than we think.

Bengal’s Panchayat polls begin with Mamata’s minister publicly thrashing a BJP supporter

The single phase Panchayat polls in West Bengal commenced on Monday and soon courted a controversy after news of serious violence started to emerge. We have already reported how two CPM workers were already set ablaze by alleged TMC workers and violence was reported from Asansol and Bhangar.

As reported by Zee News, within a short period of a few hours, two people have been killed and about 20 injured. The media too has been targeted in the violence, with one of its vans getting torched. To add to the violence, A BJP worker has been seriously injured in a knife attack by alleged TMC workers, in the state’s Bilkanda region.

The culpability of ruling TMC has been alleged by the opposition parties, which might be bolstered by reports of more than 100 bombs being discovered from a TMC leader’s house in Bhangar.

Now visuals too have started to emerge from the state, one of which shows TMC Minister Rabindra Nath Ghosh slapping a BJP worker at a Cooch Bihar polling booth, while the police stood as bystanders. The BJP worker has been identified as Sujit Kumar Das:

Since then Rabindra Nath has “defended” his actions by alleging that the BJP worker trying to run away with the ballot box.

Such an assault by Rabindra Nath Ghosh though may not surprise many, owing to his history of committing similar crimes. It was reported in March how Rabindra Nath was found threatening BJP workers that he would break the whole face of BJP’s state president. Besides this, he has earlier been caught on camera abusing a bank official.

It seems that TMC workers have decided to go toe to toe with Ministers in getting caught in controversial positions.

As seen in similar videos uploaded by ANI, TMC workers are supposedly barring locals from entering into polling booths to cast their votes in Birpara. The video shows a sizeable number of TMC workers trying to chase away what looks like three voters:

Possibly owing to the electoral malpractices being committed during the polls, locals in Bhangar have decided to protest against TMC’s alleged booth capturing by creating a roadblock:

In light of the violence, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has issued an “appeal for peace”, it remains to be seen how obeying her party workers are in this regard, and whether she would take concrete against those who fail to follow her “appeal”.

Maharashtra ATS arrests Pakistan trained suicide bomber planning high profile assassinations in Mumbai

Maharashtra ATS has arrested a man who was allegedly planning to assassinate some important personalities in Mumbai. According to reports, the Juhu unit of Maharashtra ATS arrested the man from the western suburbs of Mumbai.

The 32-year-old, who is reportedly named Faisal Hasan Mirza, was arrested on May 11, has allegedly been to Pakistan via Sharjah and Dubai. The ATS has reportedly stated that the man was called to Pakistan by a wanted terror activist in the city and he was trained in a Karachi based camp.

The ATS has reportedly stated that Mirza went first to Sharjah to meet the terror activist who provided him with logistics support. He then reportedly went to Karachi via Dubai. While in Karachi, Mirza was trained by a known terror organisation in their camp. The ATS has reportedly added that he has been trained in explosives, sophisticated firearms as well as suicide bombing techniques. The ATS has also added that the terror camp is backed by Pakistan’s ISI.

Officials at ATS have further added that during interrogations, Faisal Hasan Mirza revealed he was part of a terror group that was planning to carry out attacks at ‘public utilities’ and crowded places. He has also revealed plans to assassinate some important personalities in Mumbai.

According to reports, he was presented before a trial court after his arrest and was remanded to ATS custody till May 21. It is notable here that this incident comes at the wake of ex-Pakistan PM Nawaz Sharif admitting to Pakistan’s role in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks. Earlier last year, Gujrat ATS had arrested two individuals who were planning attacks on Jewish populated areas in Mumbai and Ahmedabad who were allegedly the operatives of the Islamic State.

ET survey indicates the mood is still heavily in favour of ‘Modi Sarkaar’

On May 26th, 2018 the Modi Sarkar will complete 4 years in power. Economic Times has done a LocalCircles Poll of citizens taking opinions from about 40,000 people from 250 districts across the country. A total of 1.75 lakh votes were cast in the poll.

On the overall performance of the government in these 4 years, a total of 57% people have given a positive response. While 29% believe the government has met expectations, 28% believe it has exceeded expectations. 43% believe that the performance has been below expectations.

On being asked whether the government is on track to deliver on the promises made in the election manifesto, 56% replied ‘Yes’ while 40% replied ‘No’. 4% stated that they cannot say.

65% people said that they feel optimistic about their family’s future in India. While 27% said no and 8% could not say. 65% people also stated that they believe sufficient development in new infrastructure (roads, power, irrigation, broadband) has taken place while 29% replied in negative and 6% said that they cannot say.

46% people believe that doing business has become easier, while 39% do not believe so and 15% replied that they cannot say. When the people were asked to name the most effective mission/scheme of the government, 58% named the Direct Benefit Transfer schemes while 9% named Make In India. 19% people chose Swachh Bharat while 14% said it is the Jan Dhan Yojna.

The areas where the Modi Sarkar has got a more negative response were the creation of new jobs and the effect of GST on lowering the monthly expenses. According to the poll, 54% people stated that the government has not been able to reduce unemployment rates and create new jobs, while 35% replied it has, 11% were unable to answer. On being asked whether they have, as consumers, experienced lower prices or lower monthly expenses after the rollout of GST, 60% said ‘No’ while 32% said ‘Yes’. 8% of the people could not reply.

As evidenced by this poll, the mood still seems to favour Narendra Modi and the BJP heavily.

West Bengal panchayat polls: violence reported, Mamata appeals for peace

In the crucial three-tier panchayat polls currently underway in West Bengal, sporadic violence has been reported from various parts of the state, like North 24 Parganas, Nadia and Paschim Medinipur districts. While a BJP polling agent was allegedly thrashed at Goaltore in Paschim Medinipur, brother of an independent candidate was shot at in Nadia. Meanwhile, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has appealed for peace.

Reports have also come in that CPM workers were allegedly torched by TMC goons in Kakdwip block of South 24 Parbana district. A crude bomb was also set off in Cooch Behar’s Dinhata where a TMC worker has reportedly lost a hand. A media van was also reportedly torched and a camera broken in Bhangar, West Bengal.

Meanwhile, tension continues to prevail in Asansol following the bombing which took place in Raniganj before polling started. Raniganj is also where heavy violence took place after the attack on Ram Navami procession in March this year.

The panchayat polls in West Bengal have been in news for all the wrong reasons. After the TMC leader Arabul Islam was arrested in connection with the killing of a supporter of an independent candidate, it was reported that handmade bombs were recovered from his house. There have been instances of him being involved in violence and news of his arrests and expulsion have been reported several times in the past.

When it comes to politics in West Bengal, violence has often been the currency of choice for the political parties. They have resorted to brute force and coercion for attaining individual benefits. The party workers have often been caught on the wrong foot, breaking laws fearless of the repercussions. The upcoming Panchayat polls have turned West Bengal into a battlefield, with the Calcutta High Court suspending all the poll processes of West Bengal’s upcoming Panchayat elections. The order came in the backdrop of serious violence across the state with regards to the Panchayat polls. Besides violence, the TMC establishment has been accused of openly intimidating people by carrying out armed rallies.

Besides that, ahead of the West Bengal panchayat elections, voters are claiming that they are deprived of the Centre’s prominent schemes such as Ujjwala Yojana (gas connection) and Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (house) to name a few.

The panchayat polls are crucial for TMC as they are being seen as a warm up to the 2019 elections where Mamata is eyeing the top post. 40 of the West Bengal’s 42 Lok Sabha seats are located in the districts that going to the polls today.

CCTV cameras are un-Islamic, says Darul Uloom Deoband

After calling dancing and marrying bank employees un-Islamic, Darul Uloom Deoband, well known Islamic seminary in Deoband, Uttar Pradesh, has declared CCTV cameras un-Islamic since shooting a picture is un-Islamic as per Shariat.

A three-cleric panel of the ‘fatwa department’ (we are not making this up), was responding to a query by a Maharashtra based Muslim if it was okay to install CCTV cameras in a shop or a place where there is movement of a lot of people. The panel said, ‘there are many other ways to ensure safety of a commercial establishment or a home. In Shariat, it is un-Islamic to shoot a picture. Consequently, even the CCTV is un-Islamic.’

Earlier, Darul Uloom Deoband had issued fatwa against Muslim women taking shopkeepers’ help to wear bangles since it was ‘wrong and a big sin’ (to have strange men touch arms).

Earlier it was reported that Deoband clerics had issued a fatwa against life insurance, as they claimed that Life and death are in the hands of Allah and no insurance company can guarantee a man’s longevity.

Also a few days ago a cleric associated with the Darul Uloom Deoband university issued a fatwa against women watching football games, as watching men playing with bare knees is forbidden for women.

In the past fatwas were issued against posting photos of self and family on social media websites like Facebook and WhatsApp. New Year Celebrations and designer burqas, too have met with the same treatment.

A fatwa was also issued against a 15-year-old Muslim girl for dressing up as Lord Krishna and reciting Gita. A Deoband Ulema had reportedly expressed his displeasure at the girl dressing up as Lord Krishna and termed it as anti-Islamic.

Nawaz Sharif admits Pakistan’s role in 26/11 terror attack, no comments from ‘RSS ki Saazish’ peddlers

0

The former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has accepted Pakistan’s role in the heinous and barbaric 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks. While conversing with a leading Pakistani English daily, Dawn, Sharif commented upon the role of “non-state” actors in Pakistan and how they were responsible for the series of co-ordinated attack which occurred on 26-November, 2008 in Mumbai claiming over 160 lives.

Sharif cautiously avoided mentioning any names. The mastermind behind Mumbai attacks, Hafiz Saeed, or Massod Azhar and their terror outfits – Jammat-ud-dawah, Jaish-e-Mohammed respectively, which are operating from Pakistan with impunity were not mentioned by Sharif as he stated –

“Militant organizations are active. Call them non-state actors, should we allow them to cross the border and kill 150 people in Mumbai?”

Sharif also reflected upon the problem of interference from the Army establishment in the matters of the elected government and how the Army and judiciary establishment in Pakistan breaches the fundamental principle of separation of power. Sharif furthered –

“You can’t run a country if you have two or three parallel governments. This has to stop. There can only be one government – the constitutional one.”

Sharif was ousted from power by the Supreme Court of Pakistan for his alleged involvement in Panama papers scandal. The apex court also barred him for life from holding public office. Nawaz Sharif who was disqualified by the apex court in February as the head of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League- Nawaz (PML-N) also spoke about the stalled trial of Mumbai attacks at the Rawalpindi anti-terrorism court,

“Why can’t we complete the trial? It’s absolutely unacceptable. This is exactly what we are struggling for. President Putin has said it. President Xi has said it,” – the former Prime minister stated.

The 26/11 trail entered its 10th year but no progress has been made with regard to bringing those responsible to justice. Pakistani witnesses, both official and private testified and provided evidence against the seven accused but the Pakistani establishment has been hell-bent on hearing from Indian witnesses before reaching a verdict which shows the underlying reluctance of the Pakistani state to bring the perpetrators to justice and their wish to put this case under the carpet for reasons well known.

Sharif’s admission has put the propagators of the RSS-conspiracy theory behind the 26/11 attacks, in a fix. These propagators who put political expediency before National security interest will have a lot to answer for in the coming days. This admission by Sharif is sure to cause a lot of ripples in the sub-continent and especially among the polity of India who was at the helm of affairs in 2008. The question as to why did ministers from the then incumbent government supported the RSS-conspiracy plot in 26/11 remains unanswered.

Dear minorities, liberal media is NOT your friend, you’re being played!

0

“If you don’t read the news, you’re uninformed. If you read the news, you’re misinformed.” – anonymous (quote attributed to Denzel Washington and Mark Twain)

I address minorities in the title because when it comes to the majority, the media isn’t even trying to hide their hostility. Is it really that hard to wrap your head around the fact that media lies?

Let us not delude ourselves, all is not perfect in this country. The world is a grim, nasty place and incidents of intolerance and communalism do happen (perpetrated by all sides, mind you). I say this not to hate on India, but more as an acceptance of reality and an acknowledgement of our faults as a society. I am not downplaying these incidents and definitely not belittling the suffering of the victims. But here’s what you need to understand.

The truth: We are a fairly civilized country and the majority of the population are nice, normal people like you and me. They have a conscience and condemn these incidents like any decent human being would. You would know that if you spent less time reading fake news on the internet, and more time actually talking to people around you.

What media wants you to believe: “We are ruled by an evil, fascist, brahmanical tyranny!” Unfortunately for them, such incidents don’t happen often enough to support their theory. If there is a dip in the number of such incidents, any civilized, peace-loving person would see that as good news. But not these people. For them, it’s bad for business. “No incidents of communal tension? No problem, let’s make something up! The gears in our factory of hate and divisiveness need to keep turning!”

Notable recent examples:

1. “I got a semen-filled balloon thrown at me by a group of boys. Hindu festivals are an excuse to harass women!” Seriously? Like… seriously!?? Wasn’t the story exposed to be fake later on?

2. The communal twist given to the Kathua case. The masses have been so thoroughly brainwashed and so completely mentally enslaved, they instantly believed it without question when a headline said: “Hindu nationalists come out in support of rapists.” Media will cry crocodile tears over the little girl, but when it comes to pushing their narrative, they will happily throw a thousand girls like her under the bus.

3. Mind-numbingly stupid articles like “Rasam is a symbol of brahmanical tyranny” and “Bharatanatyam as an Object of Majoritarian Cultural Nationalism.” *facepalm* What next? Bananas! How about them bananas? Bananas are oppressive! Bananas are a phallic symbol of Hindutva male patriarchal oppression which is sexist, misogynist, capitalist, industrialist, photosynthesis, big words… blah blah blah… more big words…

Clearly, these fake stories are circulated with one intent – to scare the living daylights out of minorities! Anyone who dares question these narratives, even in a polite inquisitive manner, is subjected to a volley of insults and abuses – Bhakt! Paid troll! Sanghi! Sexist! Hindutva terrorist! Sensible minorities who are smart enough to see through this are called “Uncle Toms” – all bullying tactics. The same way how western SJWs call people how disagree with them “Nazis” and “Fascists” and “literally Hitler.” Indian liberals are basically just cheap copies of their western counterparts. Bunch of low-IQ wannabes trying too hard to fit in and be as cool as wypipo (slang used to refer white people) by using like words “woke” and “check your privilege” and the latest mental illness to hit the scene – “I am gender non-conforming.” Google it, it is BEYOND ridiculous.

Heights of wannabeism were displayed recently when a group of kids from Mumbai participated in #MarchForLives – a problem that doesn’t even remotely affect India since gun laws in India are way more stringent than in the US.

I know some of you are rolling your eyes while reading my rants here. Exactly. Glad you understand. Now, how about showing the same cynicism to everything you read on the internet!?

A few years ago in Bangalore, police arrested a man who was throwing nails on the busy Hosur road. Turns out he was a puncture shop owner and this was his idea of “business development.” The unholy nexus of politicians and paid media is like that puncture shop guy – create a problem, then sell the solution. Ever occurred to you that certain groups are backward because politicians want them to be backward? They want them to be permanently oppressed and permanent victims? You see, you can’t sell yourself as a problem-solver if there is no problem.

That’s the fundamental difference between liberals and conservatives. Leftist governments want to make a big show about helping minorities by giving free handouts, appearing magnanimous while spending other people’s money (spoiler alert: it’s your taxpayer money!)

Whereas right-leaning folk are asking – after more than 70 years of independence, why are people still backward and need government handouts? There has to be a better solution. (spoiler alert: that solution is capitalism!)

But some people love playing the victim card. In my line of business, I was approached by a guy who said something like, “Look at them, denying us opportunities because we are Muslim.” My response: “Um… no, it’s because you’re supremely incompetent. Doesn’t matter what religion you are, I don’t blame those people for rejecting you. Sorry, I refuse to participate in the Oppression Olympics. I want ‘equal opportunity’ not ‘special treatment.’”

Here’s the truth about religious differences in India – nobody cares! Fanatics exist, but the average Indian is not too invested in religion, the topic is seldom raised in personal and professional interactions. People follow religion to varying degrees, but the vast majority don’t have their lives revolving around it. At the end of the day, we are all human and have the same human problems – health, job, money, instalments, relationship problems, etc. But despite our differences, we’ve found a way to get along. Let me put it this way – today in India, you see a group of people sitting at a table having a good time eating, drinking, talking, laughing – you won’t be able to tell who’s from what religion. Nobody really cares, we get along fine. But understand that this peace and harmony is not unconditional. We exist like this because we understand and respect each other’s boundaries. The guy sitting across the table doesn’t mind me eating stuff that his religion forbids – so long as I don’t stick my fork in his plate. In a multi-cultural society, we have to be sensitive, behave responsibly and not make inflammatory, ill-informed and irresponsible statements, just to get a few more eyeballs on our page. Don’t burn the nation for a few more likes and retweets on your social media.

In the end, dear reader, I ask you this question. What side are you on? There is the side that brainwashes you with fake news and teaches you to be hateful and divisive. And there is the side that says: let’s stop focusing on our differences, and instead, focus on the things that bind us together. Ignore the fake news narrative. Instead, talk to real people, have an open mind, listen to the other side – you will discover that the world is not as bad as the media tells you it is. Be aware of evil in the world, but don’t let it define you as a person.

“Manage your exposure to the horrors of the world. Do not over-expose yourself to the point where you get messed up. Do not cheese-grate your soul into vengeful scraps by constantly rubbing it against the worst aspects of the world.” – Stefan Molyneux

Biased partisan media fills you with hate and fear. And angry, scared people are easier to control and manipulate. Stop reading fake news! Snap out of it, Neo, take the red pill! Or you’ll never find out how deep this rabbit-hole goes.

Chidambarams charge-sheeted for undiclosed foreign assets

Defence Minister of India Nirmala Sitharaman held a press conference today putting allegations of undisclosed foreign assets of former union minster P Chidambaram. The Income Tax department has filed chargesheets against him, his wife Nalini, son Karti and daughter-in-law Srinidhi under the Black Money Act. She urged Congress President Rahul Gandhi to come out and clarify the issue which he has been raising in the past.

She further informed that the amnesty scheme was brought in 2015 with September 30 as the deadline for disclosure of illegal assets. She alleged that Chidambarams have some 21 foreign bank accounts in many countries. Since the assets were not disclosed partly or fully and this can’t be a case of oversight by a former minister hence IT department will move forward in the investigation. She pointed out that such disclosure was not made either in 2009 or in 2016 affidavit.

On Friday, the Income Tax department had filed four charge-sheets against the Chidambarams for non-disclosure of assets held in foreign countries. The charge-sheets have been filed in a special court at Chennai under section 50 of the Black Money (Undisclosed Foreign Income and Assets) and Imposition of Tax Act, 2015. The IT officials informed that the charge-sheet has been filed as the case has reached its “logical conclusion”

Section 50 IT Act 2015 (Source : www.incometaxindia.gov.in )

She told the media that the Chidambarams have been charged for allegedly not disclosing immovable foreign assets such as one at Cambridge in UK worth Rs 5.37 crore, another property worth Rs 80 lakh in the same country and some assets worth Rs 3.28 crore in the US.

BJP President Amit Shah gave a tweet stating that the four charge-sheets have been filed for the assets amounting to USD 3 billion.

The Black Money Act was enacted by the Modi government in its push to trace and bring illegal financial assets stashed abroad. The law carries a tax of 120 percent, penalty on undisclosed foreign assets and a jail term of upto seven years. Previously, such issues were dealt under Income Tax Act, 1961. The department had issued notices to Karti Chidambaram but he had challenged those on the grounds that he has already submitted the details to another tax authority and that “parallel proceedings” can’t be done against an individual under the same law. The High Court had dismissed his petition.

Meghalaya CM in talks with the centre to restart coal mininig

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, along with Advocate General Amit Kumar, has met Union Coal Minister Piyush Goyal to discuss about coal mining in the state. Chief Minister and Advocate General had also held a discussion with the officials in the Ministry of Coal such as Additional Secretary and Joint Secretary and the ministry has asked the state government to work on different modalities. A team from the ministry would also be visiting Meghalaya soon.

Earlier, the Chief Minister had met the ministry officials to discuss about the operational coal mining in the state keeping in mind the balance between economy and environment. He had setup a group of ministers to study the ban on coal mining in the state. Coal mining is unique and an important source of livelihood for many people in the state as miners, traders and transporters. According to some estimates, the ban has cost the state exchequer a loss of about Rs. 600 crore.

An interim ban was imposed on April 17, 2014, on the illegal rat-hole mining in the state by NGT on a petition by All Dimasa Students’ Union and the Dima Hasao District Committee. The commercial rat-hole mining in Meghalaya started in 1980s.
