Trauma care unit vandalised, doctor attacked: Amid protests over rape-murder at RG Kar hospital, family members of dead patient attack SSKM hospital

On Sunday (18th August), the family members of a deceased patient attacked the trauma care unit of SSKM hospital in Kolkata after accusing doctors of medical negligence.

The accused ambushed the healthcare facility, carried out vandalism and physically assaulted an on-duty doctor named Subrata Shur. In visuals shared on social media, the victim could be seen in a wounded state with his face covered in bruises.

The incident took place amid the ongoing protests over the rape and murder of a junior doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.

While speaking about the matter, a police official informed, “His family members came to the hospital and started vandalising the area, alleging that negligence by doctors had led to the youth’s death.”

BJP leader Locket Chatterjee took to social media to inform that the accused has connections to a powerful Minister of the Trinamool Congress (TMC). “This isn’t just an attack on an individual—it’s a direct assault on the very fabric of our society,” she said in a tweet.

“Under TMC’s disastrous rule, Bengal has devolved into a nightmare where safety is a distant dream for everyone—be it women, frontline workers, or ordinary citizens. The reign of terror under this administration continues unabated. How much longer will Bengal endure this chaos and lawlessness?” she added, demanding the resignation of Mamata Banerjee.

A team of police was deployed at the hospital. While some media reports suggested that none of the accused were arrested, a report by ABP Ananda claimed that 3 relatives of the deceased patient were nabbed.

Tamil Nadu: Stray dog attack leaves 25 Injured in Kallakurichi, 4-year-old child succumbs to rabies in Ranipet

0

On 17th August, a stray dog went on a biting rampage and attacked 25 people including seven children in a village near Chinna Salem of district Kallakurichi and a village near Cuddalore in Tamil Nadu. The dog bit the victims on the limbs and faces.

As per a police statement, several people had gathered for a temple festival in V Mamandur near Chinna Salem. A dog suddenly started attacking and biting people. Over 15 devotees were bitten by the dog in a short span. The villagers somehow managed to chase the rouge dog away.

The same dog later reached the neighbouring village Panaiyanthur in district Cuddalore and bit another dozen people. By the time this report was published, there was no information if the dog was caught or not.  the victims were treated at Chinna Salem government general hospital in Kallakurichi where they received rabies shots.

4-year-old died of rabies despite getting vaccination

In other news, a four-year-old boy died of rabies on 13th August, 17 days after he was bitten by a stray dog in Ranipet district of Tamil Nadu. The incident took place on 27th July after which the dog was stoned to death by the angry villagers. The victim, identified as Nirmal, was the son of B Kalaivani and Balaji. His father is an auto rickshaw driver from Gandhipuram in Arakkonam Talum. On the evening of 27th July, Nirmal was playing outside his house when the stray dog attacked him. He sustained injuries to his mouth. He was rushed to the hospital where he received a four-dose rabies vaccine.

He was then shifted to Chengalpattu Government Hospital and remained in intensive care for 15 days. Initially, his condition stabilised but soon after he was brought home, he started showing symptoms including shouting and crying. He was taken to the hospital where the parents were informed that the rabies virus infected his nervous system. The doctors gave him only two days to live. On the 13th, he succumbed to the infection. Doctors believe that as the wound was in proximity with the brain, the infection travelled faster and affected the nervous system. Another 11-year-old kid was also attacked by the same dog but he was declared safe after re-examination.

Stray dog attack leaves 17 people injured in one hour in Gorakhpur

On 14th August, a 22-year-old man named Ashish Yadav became one of the 17 victims of a series of attacks by a stray dog in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh. Ashish was attending a call outside his house while walking casually when the stray dog attack left him in shock. The video of the incident has gone viral on social media.

The CCTV video was recorded at around 9:45 PM on 14th August outside Ashish’s house. Ashish, who is a BBA student, was walking casually attending a call. Suddenly, a stray dog came from behind and attacked him. Ashish tried to get away and managed to do so for a couple of seconds but the dog kept biting him. By the end of the attack, the dog bit Ashish on his leg, arm and mouth. As the dog ran away, Ashish’s family members also rushed out and Ashish was seen getting inside the house holding his bleeding face.

Reports suggest that Ashish was not the only victim of the dog’s attack. 16 other people from the locality were attacked by the same dog in under 60 minutes, including women and children. After Ashish, the dog attacked a woman who was outside her house. After that woman, the dog went on to attack two girls who were playing outside their home.

Stray dog menace in India

In recent years, the problem of stray dogs has increased exponentially in India. Because of the failure of civic authorities and the ‘activism’ of so-called animal lovers for the stray dogs without any responsiblity, the attacks on humans have increased. In an answer to the question posed by BJP leader Atul Gard in Lok Sabha, the government informed that there were 30 lakh dog bite cases reported in the country in 2023 alone and 286 people lost their lives due to rabies.

On 8th August, it was reported that an 18-month-old boy was hospitalised after a stray dog attacked him near Satavahana University in Karimnagar district. In the CCTV footage, the toddler, identified as Harinandan, could be seen playing with another child on the roadside when the dog pounced on him, inflicting severe injuries. The victim’s mother, who was nearby, rushed and rescued the child, chasing the dog away.

On 27th July, it was reported that 11, including three children, were injured in a stray dog attack in Kharar, Punjab. A 5-year-old was admitted to the hospital in serious condition.

On 10th March, a pack of stray dogs attacked and dragged a 5-year-old girl in Amroha, Uttar Pradesh. She suffered multiple dog bites before locals could rescue her.

Bushra Bibi’s ‘spiritual powers’ were info planted by ex-ISI chief Faiz Hameed to ‘control’ Imran Khan: Pakistan media reports

0

New details have emerged in an ongoing probe into the relationship between Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan and former ISI Director-General Lieutenant General (retd) Faiz Hameed, as reported by The Express Tribune.

According to sources cited by The Express Tribune, General Hameed maintained contact with Imran Khan through his wife, Bushra Bibi. Hameed allegedly provided information to Bushra Bibi in advance, which she would then convey to Imran Khan, presenting it as divine inspiration.

When this information later proved to be accurate, it reportedly reinforced the PTI founder’s belief in Bushra Bibi’s spiritual abilities, while in reality, it was Hameed who had shared the information.

The probe took an unexpected turn after the former ISI chief’s arrest when an iPhone discovered in Chakwal reportedly unveiled details of his relationship with Imran Khan. According to sources, Bushra Bibi’s patience is reportedly wearing thin, The Express Tribune noted.

There are indications that Imran Khan’s wife might be considering cooperating with authorities, potentially testifying in exchange for immunity and distancing herself and her close associate, Farah Gogi, from the ongoing controversies.

Meanwhile, on Saturday, Imran Khan stated that he does not feel intimidated by the arrest of General Faiz Hameed, as reported by The Express Tribune.

Speaking informally with reporters in Adiala Jail, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan said that he would not have called for a judicial commission if he were afraid.

On August 12, Pakistan’s military announced that General Hameed had been arrested due to “multiple instances of violation” of the Army Act following his retirement in December 2022, according to Geo News.

The military further stated, “The process of Field General Court Martial has been initiated, and Lt Gen (retd) Faiz Hameed has been taken into military custody.”

The Pakistani military explained that the action against the former ISI chief was in line with the orders of the Supreme Court, which in 2023 called for an investigation after a land development company named Top City filed a petition, Geo News reported. The company alleged that Hameed and his brother had acquired ownership of several properties and had even blackmailed the company’s owner.

‘She is engaging in duplicity’: Parents of deceased trainee doctor slams CM Mamata Banerjee for suppressing public anger, say they lost faith in her and police tried to hush up the case

Days after the horrific rape and murder of the 31-year-old trainee female doctor in Kolkata’s RG Medical Hospital, her parents told the media that they are not satisfied with the state government’s action in their case and slammed the Chief Minister for indulging in “duplicity”. While interacting with the media on Sunday (18th August), the grieving parents said they had lost faith in CM Mamata Banerjee. They explained that while she is ‘doing protest to demand Justice in their daughter’s case’, she is suppressing public anger and trying to stop the protest that is seeking Justice for their daughter.

They further stated that the Police didn’t do a good job at all and only tried to hush up their daughter’s case. According to them, the Police hurried their daughter’s post-mortem and attempted to remove her body as soon as possible. Her father said that even when three bodies were present at the crematorium, their daughter’s body was cremated first. They said that no one from the department or the college cooperated with them and added that the “entire department” was involved in the incident.

Speaking with news agency ANI, her father said that they are not satisfied with CM Mamata Banerjee as they accused her of putting common people who are seeking Justice for their daughter in jail.

He said, “The CM is talking about providing justice, but then attempts are being made to put the common people demanding justice in jail. We are not satisfied with the CM. We have refused to take any compensation…”

Expressing disappointment with the initial inquiry, he added, “No results have come out of the inquiry that is being done. We hope we will get results… No one from the department or the college cooperated with us. The entire department is involved in this… There were three bodies at the crematorium but our daughter’s body was cremated first…”

Her mother also criticised CM Banerjee stating, “She (Mamata Banerjee) said that the culprit will be arrested as soon as possible, but nothing has happened so far. One person has been arrested. I am sure many more are involved in this incident. I think the entire department is responsible for the incident… The police did not do a good job at all. I feel that the Chief Minister is trying to stop the protest, today she imposed Section 144 here so that people cannot protest.”

Responding to a query about the Police Commissioner, she said, “They did not cooperate with us at all, they only tried to hush up the case as soon as possible. Their attempt was to get the post-mortem done as soon as possible and remove the body.”

The parents of the deceased female trainee doctor who was raped and murdered on 9th August also recalled the devastating moment when they first saw their daughter’s body, battered and draped only in a bed sheet

They recalled the late-night call that initially informed them that their daughter was sick. When they contacted the caller back, they were asked to rush to the hospital as the administration informed them that their daughter had allegedly committed ‘suicide’.

Recounting the initial response of the Hospital administration in the case, her mother told ANI, “First we got a call from the hospital that your daughter is sick, then the call was disconnected. After that when I called and asked what happened, they told me to come to the hospital. When we called again, the (caller) identified himself as Assistant Super and said your daughter has committed suicide. She went to duty on Thursday, we got this call on Friday at 10:53 am. When we reached there, we were not allowed to see her, we were allowed to see her at 3 o’clock.”

She added, “Her pants were open, there was only one piece of cloth on her body. Her hand was broken, blood was coming out of her eyes, mouth. Just by looking at her, it seemed that someone had murdered her. I told them it is not suicide, it’s a murder. We worked so hard to make our daughter a doctor but she was murdered.”

Speaking with NDTV, the father also stated that the initial call informed him that his daughter had allegedly died by suicide. It is pertinent to note that the autopsy report has revealed that it is a case of rape and murder.

He told NDTV, “I received a call at 11 pm, reached the hospital at 12 am, and only at 3:30 am did I finally see her body. Only I know what I went through when I saw her. There were no clothes on her body. She was only draped in a bedsheet. Her legs were apart, with one hand on her head.”

He added, “We have lost everything; we have nothing left. We want justice.”

Strikingly, facing mounting criticism over the government’s mishandling of the case, CM Banerjee took out a protest rally from Moulali to the Dorina Crossing area of Kolkata on Friday to demand Justice for the woman doctor.

Referring to her protest march, the father of the deceased victim took a dig at her and said that he had lost faith in Mamata Banerjee.

He said, “Early on, I had full faith in her, but now, no. She is asking for justice, but what is she saying that for? She can take charge of that; she is doing nothing.”

While speaking with reporters earlier, he raised questions on CM Banerjee’s “duplicity”.

He said, “The Chief Minister speaks at length, walking the streets demanding justice for my daughter. Yet, at the same time, she attempts to suppress public anger. Why is she engaging in duplicity? Is she afraid of people? We have questions that need answers. Those who are protesting freely are finding their voices stifled by the Chief Minister. While she herself takes to the streets in protest, she is simultaneously making arrangements to ensure that others’ protests do not take place.”

The victim’s mother, standing next to her husband, also slammed the Banerjee government and highlighted the grave concerns of women’s safety in Bengal.

Citing Mamata Banerjee government’s scheme names, she urged Bengalis to first ask for the safety of their daughters before availing of any of these pseudo schemes.

She said, “All the schemes by Mamata Banerjee – the Kanyashree scheme, the Lakshmi scheme – all pseudo. Whoever wants to avail of these schemes, before availing them, kindly see if your Lakshmi at home is safe at all.”

Meanwhile, she also expressed gratitude to all those protesting and raising their voice to seek Justice for their daughter and urged them to continue their support till the culprits are caught.

She said, “Through you (media), we want to give a message to the people of the whole country. We are grateful to all the countrymen, people of the world, and the state, we request that you stand with us until the accused is caught. We only wish that this should not happen to any mother, no one should lose their child like us…”

As West Bengal police starts crackdown on social media for comments on RG Kar hospital incident, BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari offers free legal help to recipients of police notices

Following the nationwide outrage over the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, West Bengal has launched a massive crackdown on social media users. Now, BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari has free legal assistance to social media users who have been targeted by Bengal police for their online comments.

The cyber cell of Kolkata Police has issued notices to hundreds of people for posting various comments and allegations over the incident. The police have also registered FIR against many people for their comments on social media accusing them of spreading fake news over the incident. Moreover, the police have summoned several prominent persons, including a TMC leader, senior doctors and BJP leaders.

The police have also forced a large number of people to delete their posts threatening them with legal action, and most people have complied. Amid the spree of notices issued by the overactive cyber cell of Kolkata Police after the case was handed over to the CBI, the leader of the opposition Suvendu Adhikari today announced that he will offer legal assistance to recipients of such notices free of cost.

He said that it has come to his notice that various Social Media Users across the State as well as from different parts of the country are receiving notices from  Kolkata Police, West Bengal Police and their Cyber Crime Departments, directing them to delete certain posts and threatening them of strict penal action. Mostly Social Media Users are receiving Notices under Section 168 of the BNSS (Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita) 2023, for posting content related to the RG Kar rape & murder incident, which are critical of the State Govt, Police & Administration, Adhikari added.

Therefore, Suvendu Adhikari said that if the social media post that attracted police notice is not outright vulgar and it only contained opinion of the user, he will offer free legal assistance against the police action.

The senior BJP leader said, “I believe Free Speech is the backbone of a healthy Democracy. So if anyone is being harassed for just posting their opinion and if the post is not outright vulgar, I am ready to provide Legal Assistance at free of cost.

Suvendu Adhikari asked the victims of police censorship actions to forward the police notice along with relevant details of the recipient to his email ID [email protected].

“My legal team will contact you and render legal services,” he added.

Earlier today, Adhikari had claimed that police changed the viscera and blood-stained items in an effort to protect the accused in the RG Kar Hospital’s rape and murder case. Suvendu Adhikari also demanded that CBI should confiscate the phones of CM Mamata Banerjee, Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal, RG Kar Hospital’s former principal Sandip Ghosh, DGP Rajeev Kumar, and health secretary Narayan Swaroop Nigam. He claimed that when call records and other data of the phones are examined, everything will be clear.

Blow to self-respect, nothing more humiliating in a democracy than another person cancelling CM’s program: Ex-Jharkhand CM and JMM leader Champarai Soren says ‘all 3 options’ open amid a buzz of him joining BJP

On Sunday (18th August), Former Jharkhand CM and senior JMM leader Champai Soren reacted to the strong buzz that he could soon leave his party to join the BJP, stating that for him all three options are open – retirement, forming his own political party or ‘joining companion’, alluding to joining a political party.

It is pertinent to note that on 2nd February 2024, he became the state’s 12th CM following Hemant Soren’s resignation. Soren, who has been embroiled in corruption charges, tendered his resignation before being arrested by the ED in a land scam case. However, on 28th June, the Jharkhand HC granted him bail in that case. Out on bail, Soren returned as the state CM on 3rd July, albeit following an unceremonious ouster of his party colleague and ‘interim’ CM, Champai Soren.

On Sunday, the JMM leader wrote a long post on Twitter to mention chronological events that unfolded around his ouster which he has described as a ‘humiliating experience’ and a blow to his self-respect, forcing him to explore his future options.

Reflecting on his long political career – right from raising voices for workers, and the Jharkhand movement, Champai Soren stated that he had raised issues of public concern and ensured the rights of tribals, natives, poor, labourers, students, and people of backward classes of the state.

He added that during his brief stint – from 31st January to 3rd July – he took several decisions in the public interest. However, after the Hul Diwas celebrations on 30th June, he was told that all his events for the next two days were postponed by the JMM leadership.

Champai Soren added, “One of these was a public program in Dumka, while the other was to distribute appointment letters to PGT teachers. On asking, I came to know that a meeting of the legislative party has been called by the coalition on July 3, till then you cannot attend any program as CM.”

Describing it as a humiliating experience, he further stated, “Can there be anything more humiliating in a democracy than a Chief Minister’s programs being cancelled by another person?”

He added that despite swallowing the bitter pill of insult when he said that he could attend the legislative party meeting after distributing appointment letters, his proposal was flatly rejected.

He lamented, “For the first time in my spotless political journey of the last four decades, I was broken from within. I could not understand what to do. For two days, I sat quietly and introspected, searching for my mistake in the whole incident. I did not have the greed for power even a bit, but to whom could I show this blow to my self-respect? Where could I express the pain inflicted by my own people?”

Blow to my self-respect: Former Jharkhand CM Champai Soren

He continued by noting that during this legislative party meeting, he was asked to resign. He added, “I was surprised, but I had no greed for power, so I immediately resigned, but my heart was emotional due to the blow to my self-respect.”

He emphasised that the development had forced him to look for an alternative path. He recalled, “I was so emotional due to the insulting behaviour I was facing for the last three days that I was trying to control my tears, but they were only interested in the chair. I felt as if I had no existence in that party, no existence at all, for which I had dedicated my entire life. In the meantime, many such insulting incidents happened, which I do not want to mention right now. After so much insult and contempt, I was forced to look for an alternative path.”

Regarding his future options, he didn’t reject the media buzz of him joining the BJP and noted that he has all three options open before him.

He concluded by saying, “With a heavy heart, I said in the same meeting of the legislative party that – ‘A new chapter of my life is going to start from today.’ I had three options for this. First, to retire from politics, second, to form my separate organization and third, if I find a companion on this path, then to travel further with him.”

In another tweet, he, however, added that he has no intention of involving any party member or causing any harm to the organization as it is his personal struggle.

Arvind Kejriwal playing safe? Is the ensuing JMM feud a part 2 of Jitan Ram Manjhi and Nitish Kumar’s tussle for the CM post?

Nonetheless, the development – an apparent feud between Hemant Soren – the past and incumbent CM — and Champai Soren – the Interim CM appears to have an uncanny similarity with the feud between Jitan Ram Manjhi and Nitish Kumar which erupted after they briefly swapped the CM post among themselves. After the fallout with Nitish Kumar, Jitan Ram Manji not only quit the party but also went on to launch his political outfit, Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM). On several occasions, the two had been embroiled in a war of words both inside the Bihar Assembly and outside. Notably, HAM is a constituent of NDA.

Strikingly, it also underscores the apparent reason – apprehension – behind Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s decision to not give over the reigns of his party and CM post to any AAP leader, including his wife, even when he has been in Tihar jail for a long time now in a corruption case.

Zomato bans AI-generated food images after surge in complaints from customers, to actively remove such images from restaurant menus

Food delivery company Zomato “will actively start removing” the artificial intelligence (AI) generated images of dishes from restaurant menus after receiving several complaints from the customers, CEO Deepinder Goyal said on Sunday.

Goyal in a post on the social media platform “X” said that the company encourages various forms of AI to enhance the efficiency of the workforce, however, it will not use AI-generated images for representation of dishes in restaurant menus.

In the post Zomato CEO said, “At Zomato, we use various forms of AI, to make our workflows efficient. However, one place where we strongly discourage the use of AI is images for dishes in restaurant menus. AI-generated food/dish images are misleading, and we have received numerous customer complaints on this issue. Customers say that this leads to breach of trust, and it leads to higher complaints & refunds, and also, lower ratings.”

“We urge our restaurant partners to avoid using AI for dish images in restaurant menus from now onwards — we will actively start removing such images from menus by the end of this month. And will stop accepting AI-generated dish images (as much as we can detect them using automation),” he added in the post.

Goyal further requested restaurant owners to reach out to the company if they haven’t invested in real food shots for the menu.

“Restaurant owners – if you haven’t yet invested in real food shots for your menu, please reach out to our catalogue support team,” Goyal said in the post.

Meanwhile, on August 16, the stocks of the company upped 1.77 per cent or 4.61 points.

The company has given a return of 112.65 per cent to the investors in last one year, showcasing a robust performance.

In June this year, the company informed the exchanges that it was in talks with Paytm to acquire movies and events businesses of the fintech.

Mumbai: Drunk patient and his family assault woman resident doctor on night duty at Sion Hospital

0

A woman resident doctor at the Sion Hospital in Mumbai was allegedly assaulted by a drunk patient and his family, police said on Sunday.

The patient and his family came to the hospital because he had injuries on his face.

Sharing information, police said, “At around 3:45 PM on August 18 in Ward 3 of Sion Hospital, a patient, who was intoxicated and had been injured on his face came to the hospital. While the female doctor was examining his face, the patient began screaming in pain and shouting insults at the female doctor.”

Dr Akshya More, General Secretary of Sion-Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) and BMC-MARD, also spoke about the incident and said, “The patient arrived in casualty after midnight in an intoxicated state with 7-8 relatives. He was involved in an assault before he came to the hospital, and had injury marks on his face. Owing to his injuries, he was given an ENT reference around 3:30 am. Our on-call resident doctor in the ENT department was a female.”

“Following a routine procedure, she undressed the wounds to examine them. That is when the patient started verbally abusing her. The relatives, instead of controlling the patient, started verbally abusing the resident doctor. Things escalated to physical assault very quickly,” said the doctor.

Adding further, he said, “Nurses intervened but by then the doctor had sustained abrasions on her hands. By the time security was called, the patient and the relatives had fled. Such incidents are very frequent and mostly go unreported but we could not let this one slide, especially after what happened in Kolkata.”

Based on the statement of the female doctor, Sion Police Station of Mumbai registered a case of misbehaviour and assault.

The Sion police registered a case under sections 115(2), 352, 3(5) and 3,4 of the BNS and the Maharashtra Medical Services and Medical Services Institutions (Prevention of Violent Acts and Loss or Damage to Property) Act, 2010.

Further details on the matter are awaited.

The incident comes amid the nationwide protests after a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata was allegedly raped and murdered on August 9.

Books describing non-Muslims as Kafirs being taught in govt-funded Madrasas in Bihar: What NCPCR Chief said about Hindus being enrolled in Madrasas, slams UNICEF

0

On Sunday (18th August), Priyank Kanoongo, the Chairperson of the National Commission for Protection Of Child Rights (NCPCR), expressed concerns over the radicalisation in the curriculum of Bihar’s government-funded Madrasas. He emphasised that the Madrasa is not a place for the basic education of a child as they should study in schools. He categorically noted that Hindu children should not be in Madrasas at all and slammed UNICEF for drafting a radical curriculum for such Madrasas. He added that the Madrasa Board should be dissolved.

Notably, on Sunday, the NCPCR Chairperson shared a post on X to highlight that government-funded Madrasas in Bihar are teaching children from books like Taleem-Ul-Islam that declare non-Muslims as Kafirs. He noted that as per reports, Hindu children are also enrolled in such Madrasas, but the Bihar government didn’t give him official information about the enrollment ratio.

Taking to X, Kanoongo wrote, “In the state of Bihar, Taleem-Ul-Islam and other similar books are being taught in the government-funded Madrasas. In this book, non-believers in Islam are declared as Kafirs. It has been reported that Hindu children are also being admitted in these madrasas but the Bihar government is not giving official information on the number ratio.”

In his post, he has also attached an image showing an excerpt from Taleem-Ul-Islam which declares all non-Muslims as Kafirs and also talks about their ‘fate’ stating that they will never attain salvation and instead will be doomed to eternal punishment.

He also pointed out that he has asked for the transfer of Hindu children from Madrasas to schools. But in response to this, the Bihar Madrasa Board informed him that the curriculum of Madrasas has been prepared by UNICEF India which he described as the height of appeasement by UNICEF and the Madrasa Board.

Slamming UNICEF for the same, he categorically said that it is not the job of UNICEF to create a radical curriculum using funds received from governments in the garb of child protection. He added that misuse of funds in any activities other than for furthering the Right to Education is a direct violation of the Indian Constitution as well as the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). Subsequently, he demanded that UN India should investigate this misuse of funds under the monitoring of the parent organisation, the United Nation.

He further stated that a probe is ongoing to analyze the content of the books which are prescribed in the curriculum as most of them are published in Pakistan.

He concluded by saying, “Madrasa is not a place for basic education of children in any form, children should study in school, and Hindu children should not be in Madrasas at all, Madrasa Board should be dissolved.”

Pakistan: Telecom minister denies allegations of blocking Internet services, blames excessive use of VPNs by people for internet slowdown

0

Pakistan’s State Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication, Shaza Fatima Khawaja on Sunday rebuffed claims of the government blocking or slowing the internet services and said that the slowdown is because of excessive Virtual Private Networks (VPN) usage by the people, Pakistan-based daily, the Express Tribune reported.

Shaza Fatima while addressing a press conference stated that steps are being taken to prevent internet issues and acknowledged the problems faced by the public due to widespread internet disruptions.

She said that the spike in VPN usage led to a massive load on internet services, causing it to slow down, reported the Express Tribune

Earlier, the Lahore High Court on Saturday directed the federal government and the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA) to submit their responses to the recent internet disruptions affecting millions of people in Pakistan.

While hearing a petition filed by Noman Sarwar against the nationwide internet “shutdown,” Justice Shakil Ahmad announced the reserved verdict on Saturday. He instructed all parties involved to have their representatives appear before the court and submit their responses on August 21.

The federal government has attributed the issue to the purported testing of an internet firewall aimed at regulating social media. This firewall, equipped with filters, is intended to block unwanted content from reaching a wider audience.

Internet speeds in Pakistan have slowed down significantly, causing concerns for businesses and individuals who rely on fast and reliable connectivity. The slowdown is reportedly linked to increased government monitoring of internet traffic, aimed at enhancing security and surveillance, reported Dawn.

Many businesses are contemplating relocating to countries with more stable internet services, threatening Pakistan’s reputation as a digital entrepreneurship hub and economic stability. Industry leaders warn that the current conditions are damaging the country’s ability to compete globally.

The Wireless and Internet Service Providers Association of Pakistan (WISPAP) issued a statement noting that the government’s move to boost security and surveillance has unintentionally caused serious damage to the country’s digital economy.

“Over the past few weeks, internet speeds have plummeted by 30 to 40 per cent, creating a chaotic situation for businesses and individuals who rely heavily on fast, reliable connectivity.

“The association noted that the effects have been especially severe for call centers, e-commerce professionals, remote workers, and individuals running electronic-related businesses.

“These sectors, which form the backbone of Pakistan’s burgeoning digital economy, are now struggling to maintain operations, and the slowdown is threatening their very survival,” the statement read. It also mentioned that the situation had become so critical that many businesses are contemplating moving their operations to other countries with more stable internet services, reported Dawn News.

WISPAP Chairman Shahzad Arshad expressed frustration, stating, “It’s a very discouraging situation for our customers. Many are leaving the smaller ISPs because they cannot sustain the poor service quality anymore. If this continues, we will see a mass exodus of businesses from Pakistan.”

The heightened surveillance and subsequent inability to use VPNs are exacerbating the problem, particularly for international businesses and freelancers who need secure and consistent internet access for their work.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has denied that a government-installed firewall is responsible for the disruptions, despite user speculation.

However, the future of Pakistan’s digital landscape remains uncertain, with both businesses and consumers suffering due to the slowdown.
